On May 31, we will begin non-stop service to Paris, France (Charles de Gaulle Airport), from Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia. The maple syrup story (page 29) reminded me of seeing fresh syrup poured over snow and then rolling a popsicle stick over it as it hardened for a sticky snack. You don’t need to venture far to explore ruins of the ancient Maya civilization. Hundreds of female hawksbill and loggerhead turtles return to their Cancun beach birthplaces to lay eggs at night during sea turtle nesting season, May to November. s co-owner and vice-president of merchandising for Simons department stores, Richard Simons spends roughly 100 days a year travelling the world in search of the best designers, and new ideas and inspiration. He attends approximately 50 women’s fashion shows each year but his favourite place is in the showrooms, feeling the product as customers would in a store. Born and raised in Quebec City, Richard always wanted to follow his father into the family business and, after graduating from business school at the University of New Brunswick, he saw a place for himself at the family firm. Richard is the fifth generation of his family to work at Simons, which started in 1870 as a dry goods store in Quebec City. (His brother, Peter Simons, is the company’s CEO and president.) These days, Richard oversees the buying for Canada’s 15 Simons stores, including two new stores— one in Calgary and the other in Edmonton. “It’s a very challenging and exciting time,” he says. “I’m always thinking about what’s next. What’s a mall going to look like in five years? How much will people be buying online? As a retailer, you know there’s going to be a lot of change.”

Where do you find your inspiration for the upcoming season? “Inspiration is all around. There’s inspiration when you watch a film, walk through an airport, go to a fashion show, go to an art museum or when you read. We’re bombarded with inspiration.”

Where did you get your fashion sense, your sense of style? “It’s like doing a 5,000-piece puzzle. There’s no instruction book. You might have a system and use logic;

If you start seeing a lot of yellow, you know that’ll be trending for the next season. You draw lines between the similarities, what everyone is doing. And sometimes no one else is doing it, but you just think it’s interesting.”

Who are some of your favourite designers? “Without hesitation my favourite show is Dries Van Noten. He is the master of beauty and the values of his company reflect those of our

own organization. I’m very keen on Canadian designers [such as] Unttld, Denis Gagnon, Sid Neigum. There’s great talent amongst Canadian designers and we should encourage and support them.”

What’s trending this spring? “Over the past season, we’ve seen a lot of flower prints, but this has really changed and we’ll be seeing more intense, bright colours this season mostly in solids prints and multi stripes and a lot of shiny vinyl in pants and skirts. I’m also loving the return of tailoring in pants

Could you recommend a business book? “The Designful Company: How to Build a Culture of Nonstop Innovation by Marty Neumeier. It’s great for creatives and the people who work with them.”

What’s the best part of your job? “The buyers and designers I work with. I’m privileged to work with such passionate forces in fashion. Nobody around me is ever unmotivated. It’s important to enjoy what you are doing, and it’s fun to work with happy people.”

What do you do to get away from it all? “I bought a cabin that’s three hours north of Quebec City with my brother when I was 21. I go fly fishing there with friends every spring. his month, just as Canada’s eastern provinces round the corner on winter, the nation’s maple trees are tapped. As the mercury hovers above 5˚C by day and just above zero at night, this liquid gold flows until late April when the trees’ leaves bloom and the sap runs dry. The menu boasts dishes using local products such as white wine from Rivière du Chêne Vineyard that has been flavoured with maple syrup.

little more than a decade ago, Christie Peters moved to Vancouver, sought out her culinary hero, Chef Rob Feenie, and learned how to cook at his former restaurant, Feenie’s. Peters later honed her chops at restaurants in cities like Amsterdam and San Francisco, but she always knew that one day she’d return to her hometown of Saskatoon. Today, Peters and her partner (in life and in business), chef Kyle Michael, own two restaurants in this prairie town: an eclectic flagship called The Hollows and the Italian-focused Primal. With her dedication to sustainable house-grown ingredients, full animal butchery (even the excess animal fat is turned into soap) and a vintage chic aesthetic, Peters is on a mission to refine and redefine Saskatchewan cuisine.

Q Why did you choose to return to Saskatoon? A Saskatoon is very much a land of opportunity for me. To own or even lease a building in Vancouver is unattainable, but, here in Saskatoon, it’s possible. Financially, it was easy for us to start a restaurant here—we got our foot in the door early and, as the city grows, we’ll grow with it. Q You have your own gardens, compost almost everything and practice full animal butchery. Why is that important to you? A I just couldn’t do it any other way. I’m a nature-lover and an environmentalist at heart, so, when I opened my own restaurants, I wanted that full-circle feeling. Q How are your restaurants representative of Saskatchewan? A Saskatchewan is the breadbasket of the world. To have a cuisine based around the heritage grains that we grow here was important.

We have a rye pasta with bison tongue pastrami and sauerkraut, and our house-made bread is made with red fife wheat. Q What are some of your favourite dishes at Primal and The Hollows? A At The Hollows, the menu changes frequently with the seasons, but there’s always a lot of beets and cabbage on the menu, because it’s so Saskatchewan. At Primal, we have a beef heart bolognese that I think is really cool because it uses beef heart mixed with pork. Q Can you describe the vibe of each of your restaurants? A I designed both restaurants and I’m really proud of that. The Hollows is in a huge building that used to be a Chinese restaurant—it’s kind of a time capsule from the 1960s. Primal’s decor is more high-end and polished. It’s dark and loud. —Elizabeth Chorney-Booth

Sour beers are catching on across North America.

VANCOUVER, B.C. There’s a high concentration of craft breweries producing sour beers in Vancouver. At this East Van spot, brewmaster Iain Hill makes several different styles, including kettle sours and traditional wood-aged brews. TRY: Reynard (6.5% ABV)—an oud bruin with a complex cherry-like flavour, even though no fruit was used in the brewing process. It took home a gold medal at the 2016 B.C. Craft Beer Awards.

art, fruity, refreshing: sour beers have grown in popularity across North America in recent years, with many craft breweries producing these pints alongside ever-popular IPAs, pilsners and porters. What differentiates sour beers from other styles is the fermentation process: they are soured naturally by bacteria and yeast. Sour beer was first produced in Belgium in the 18th century and is made by pouring beer into big, open-air vats, allowing airborne bacteria and yeast to drop into the liquid and start the fermentation process spontaneously. The beer is then aged, often for more than a year, in barrels that contain souring bacteria. This traditional style is called lambic and variations include gueuze (various lambics blended together), kriek (fermented with cherries) and fruit varieties like framboise (raspberries). Other styles of sour beers include Berliner

Weisse, first brewed in Germany, which is lighter than a traditional sour and made with a lactic acid bacteria, and Gose, also from Germany, which is a blend of sour and salt—thanks to the addition of coriander and salt—giving it a refreshing profile. European sour beers have been available in North America in a limited fashion since the 1970s, and, by the late 1990s, craft breweries around the continent began experimenting with their own varieties. In the past decade, North American brewers have adopted a hybrid version called “kettle sours,” where beer is kept at a warm temperature in the brew kettle, accelerating the souring process so the beer is ready within four to eight weeks. Fruits or well-aged hops are sometimes added to emphasize the fruity flavours. There are now hundreds of craft breweries across North America producing sour beers. Its lineup of Belgian-inspired beers includes a range of outstanding sour and conventional styles. TRY: Framboise de Amorosa (8.5% ABV)—a barrel-aged sour (it spends more than a year in wooden barrels) that is a deep, ruby red and bursts with sour raspberry flavour.

tep into Denver’s Union Station on a Saturday morning and you’re sure to find it buzzing with people sipping coffee, reading the paper, waiting in line for breakfast and just generally hanging out. This beautiful, turn-of-the-century building has become such a popular local haunt, it’s hard to believe only a few years ago it was a rundown train station most Denverites went out of their way to avoid. The decline of Union Station and the rest of Denver’s downtown began in the early 1980s, when the city fell into a recession. As time passed, a whole host of beautiful brick and stone buildings in the area, many dating back to the gold-rush era of the late 1800s, were abandoned and left to deteriorate. But, over the past decade, the city’s economy has steadily grown and Denver has invested in revitalizing its historic downtown core and surrounding neighbourhoods, reimagining buildings like Union Station and bringing a new kind of energy to the forefront. Home to 700,000 people (three million in the metro area) and nicknamed the Mile High City (it’s exactly one mile, or 5,280 feet, above sea level), Denver has long been known for its cowboys, beef and nearby ritzy ski towns. But the city is shaking off its outdated cowboyculture image and reinventing itself as a hip and progressive city. Leading the charge is a trailblazing craft beer scene, a host of diverse culinary offerings and neighbourhoods bursting with vibrant arts initiatives. An estimated 1,000 people move to the city each week, lured by its outdoorsy lifestyle, comparatively affordable housing and a welcoming attitude that embraces homegrown entrepreneurs. And lately, an influx of international visitors have been flocking here, too, to find out what’s behind the new Denver.

While Colorado has been brewing beer for more than 100 years (the Coors Brewery opened in neighbouring Golden in 1873), Denver’s modern-day beer scene came about in the late 1980s when an out-of-work geologist named John Hickenlooper (now Colorado’s governor) opened the city’s first craft brewery, Wynkoop Brewing, in an abandoned warehouse downtown—a radical idea, given that, at that time, downtown Denver was a nearly deserted area that locals avoided. Wynkoop proved to be a hit, drawing thirsty Denverites back into the core and inspiring other breweries and businesses—including Coors Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies—to take up residence in the surrounding rundown buildings. Thanks in large part to Hickenlooper and his brewery, downtown slowly turned into an appealing place to live and own a business.

known for authentic, Germanstyle beers and Crooked Stave specializes in barrel-aged sour and wild beers. Chad Yakobson, owner and brewmaster at Crooked Stave, says that while these beers aren’t necessarily your typical offerings, consumers in Denver have developed educated palates, which is helping to make these local beers more mainstream. “The beer we are brewing is mostly for the beer geek—the educated consumer—and that base exists in Denver,” says Yakobson.

Located on the northern tip of downtown in the Golden Triangle Creative District (so named for its high concentration of galleries and museums), the world-class Denver Art Museum hosts an impressive array of travelling exhibitions and a massive American Indian art collection, while the eponymous Clyfford Still Museum is an entire building dedicated to showcasing the celebrated American painter’s abstract-expressionist work. Of course, the city’s art scene stretches well beyond the more formal institutions found within the Golden Triangle. In recent years, artists throughout Denver have been using the city itself as their canvas; a stroll through any of Denver’s up-and-coming neighbourhoods—including Baker, River North (known locally as RiNo) and South Broadway—reveals a dizzying array of colourful murals, commissioned by local businesses to transform industrial-looking buildings into beautiful works of art. The municipal government is also committed to supporting local art initiatives—the Denver Public Art Program was created

in 1988 as a way to bring art into public spaces; municipal funding from City Council is set aside specifically for public art each year. And in 2009, the Urban Art Fund was established to facilitate the creation of new murals by local youth in heavily vandalized areas of the city. In addition, there are currently seven certified arts districts in Denver, each with their own unique offerings of galleries, museums, murals, festivals and initiatives. “There is a real identity here in owning your craft and having a community to support it,” says Amy Phare, president of the local non-profit organization Art District on Santa Fe. This district is home to more than 100 galleries, artist studios and museums, including the Museo de las Americas, a Latin-American art museum. This area also attracts thousands of people during the monthly First Friday Art Walk, when dozens of businesses open their doors for this creative event. “There’s art everywhere: upstairs, downstairs, in the alleyways—people are opening galleries in their garages now— the neighbourhood just really comes alive,” says Phare.

To say that Denver’s food scene is exploding would be an understatement—245 restaurants opened in 2017 alone. And the city is basking in international attention as the 15th season of Top Chef (which premiered in December 2017) showcases various locales around Denver. “When I was growing up here, Denver had this moniker of being a cowtown or a meat-and-potato town,” says Adam Schlegel, co-founder of popular breakfast eatery Snooze and the president of EatDenver, a non-profit that supports local restaurants. “So to see what has happened over the past 10 years is phenomenal.”

While the city still offers plenty of Rocky Mountain cuisine—there’s no shortage of local meats like lamb, bison and elk on menus—Denver has diversified well beyond the steakhouse with hip fast-casual offerings, upscale fine dining and authentic ethnic cuisines. Chuey Fu’s, a quirky spot in the Art District on Santa Fe, melds Latin and Asian cuisines to create dishes like the Fuh (Pho) Burrito, packed with bean sprouts, Thai basil, rice noodles and pho broth (order it alongside the guacamole for a real explosion of delicious international flavours). Schlegel says the city’s culinary community is also putting a larger emphasis on sustainable ingredients. “[Chefs here] spend a lot of time getting to know our vendors,” he says. For instance, Snooze works with local producers who are making everything from pickles to tortillas, and with responsible international producers for items like coffee, which is sourced from a Guatemalan farm that Schlegel visited himself.

THE VIBE IS: Visitors may think only about its theme parks (there are 13, after all), but the real Orlando lies in its themeless parks: districts like College Park, Winter Park and Audubon Park. These city neighbourhoods have been quietly developing a distinct adult appeal—not to mention some serious foodie cred. Today, even the staunchest Disney Springs devotees will venture out to College Park for the open-faced rock-shrimp ravioli at K Restaurant and the shrimp and grits at Outpost Neighborhood Kitchen. Or, they’ll head to Winter Park to shop for niche-label handbags and edgy Italian eyewear from among the 140 mostly independent high-end boutiques on its tree-lined streets. Let’s just say if there was ever a time to visit Orlando without the kids, it’s now.

grew up in England’s West Midlands, about two and a half hours from London, with its network of canals in my backyard. I couldn’t wait to introduce my wife, Laura, to these historic inland waterways on a 10-day cruise on a narrow boat. We opt for a tour of The Stourport Ring, a 119-kilometre loop that skirts Kidderminster, Wolverley, Cookley, Kinver, Wordsley, Birmingham, Alvechurch, Worcester and parts of the Black Country—named for the soot arising from its ironworking foundries and forges.

These cities, towns and villages thrived during the UK’s Industrial Revolution, churning out goods such as metal, textiles, glass and ceramics, and the canals served as a means of cargo transportation. Competition from railways and motorways saw the canal network redundant by the mid-20th century and the canals fell into disrepair. An injection of government and third-party funding, however, has seen many canals restored to their former glory, with nearby restaurants, cafés and bars creating a buzz.

A complete circuit of the Stourport Ring takes around 10 days, so, before we hop aboard our narrowboat and hit the water, we head into Stourport-on-Severn, a Georgian canal town in the heart of the Severn Valley, to pick up some supplies. This quaint town, once labelled “Pioneer Town of the Canal Age,” is one of a handful in Britain founded as a direct result of a canal, namely the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, which opened to the area in 1772. The town is also home to five canal basins—wider areas of the canal that allow narrowboats to easily load, unload and turn. As we stroll along High Street, we stumble across Laurence Gough & Sons, a family butchers that serves up organic, freerange meat, game and pork pies. Nearby, the Stourport Bakery offers homemade treats that team perfectly with a hot cup of tea—don’t miss the gooey white chocolate cheesecake.

At Stourport Marina, Starline Narrowboats’ owner Terry Huckerby and Boat Handling Instructor Dave Staines give us a thorough tour of North Star, an 18-metre craftsman-built narrowboat. The boat is slim, and, while the living quarters are tight, I’m surprised to learn it sleeps up to 12 people. Narrowboats may be simple in design, but they’re built like tanks. I volunteer to operate the 100-odd locks along the route, so Laura, under Dave’s instruction, gets the hang of steering by moving the tiller to the right to go left and to the left to go right. After a quick cruise, we moor up. “Never leave the boat without the main rope,” Dave warns. Despite its weight and size, the boat cannot go anywhere while you are holding this rope. Dave shows Laura how to secure the boat to the mooring station with a quick release knot.

Le circuit complet de Stourport Ring prend une dizaine de jours. Avant de prendre le large, nous allons à Stourport on Severn, petite ville de style Georgien située le long du canal au cœur de la Severn Valley, pour faire des provisions. Cette charmante ville, appelée autrefois « ville de pionniers à l’ère des canaux » est la seule en GrandeBretagne qui soit née directement du canal, ouvert dans la région en 1771. La ville compte cinq bassins, ou sections plus larges du canal assurant le chargement, déchargement et virage facile des péniches. Sur High Street, nous voyons Laurence Gough & Sons, une boucherie familiale qui vend de la viande bio de ferme, des pâtés de gibier et de porc. Tout près, Stourport Bakery propose des douceurs maison qui s’accordent parfaitement avec une tasse de thé. Le gâteau au fromage au chocolat blanc fondant est un vrai délice!

Les péniches

À la marina de Stourport, Terry Huckerby, propriétaire de Starline Narrowboats et Dave Staines, instructeur de manœuvre de bateaux, nous fait faire une visite très informative du North Star, péniche de 16 mètres construite par un artisan. Elle est étroite et il y a peu d’espace d’habitation, mais elle peut loger jusqu’à 12 personnes. De conception simple, ces bateaux sont construits comme des chars et bougent lentement. J’ai proposé d’opérer les quelque 100 écluses situées sur l’itinéraire. Ainsi, Laura, sous la supervision de Dave, apprend à naviguer en bougeant la barre vers la droite pour aller à gauche et en sens inverse pour aller à droite. Après une courte excursion, nous amarrons. Dave nous a avertis de ne jamais laisser la péniche sans l’amarrer. Retenue par la corde, elle ne peut pas bouger, malgré son poids et sa taille. “Use your legs, stay low and use the foot grooves,” advises Dave as I set about tackling my first lock. Laura tentatively steers the boat into the lock’s chamber and a mark on the wall indicates where the boat needs to stay to prevent it from flooding when the paddles— sliding panels in the gates—open. After shutting the gate behind the boat, I insert the key into the paddle gear, which resembles an oversized laundry mangle, and, with some effort, crank it clockwise, Clack. Clack. Clack. As the grooves of the paddle in the 1,000-plus-kilogram front gate pass an oily cog, the resistance eases and it opens, sending water into the chamber and raising the boat. Once the water levels have equalized, I push the front gates open and Laura steers through. Having successfully navigated our first lock, we’re on our own. “Relax,” I tell myself. “How hard can it be with a top speed of three miles per hour?”

the black country

Named for the thick black soot that covered the landscape, a result of the coal used in the area’s many factories, The Black Country—comprising Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton—was the heart of the nation’s Industrial Revolution, producing much of the nation’s textiles, ceramics, glass and more. We cruise along Stourbridge Canal and brace ourselves for the Netherton Tunnel which, at 2.7 km long, is just wide enough for two narrowboats to pass each other and was the last tunnel built during Britain’s Canal Age. Other than a shaft of light under each of the tunnel’s many air vents and a single head light on the boat’s bow, it’s pitch black. After almost an hour of unwavering concentration to keep the boat in a straight line, we emerge and point the bow toward Birmingham.

« Utilisez les jambes, penchez-vous et mettez vos pieds dans les rainures », me conseille Dave avant d’opérer ma première écluse. Laura essaie de piloter la péniche dans le sas; une marque au mur indique l’endroit où elle doit rester pour éviter que la proue ne soit inondée lors de l’ouverture des portes coulissantes. Une fois la porte fermée derrière la péniche, j’insère la clé dans le mécanisme qui ressemble à une grosse essoreuse et, avec effort, je la tourne dans le sens des aiguilles, et voilà. Alors que les rainures de la porte pesant plus d’une tonne arrivent à une dent graisseuse, la résistance baisse et la porte s’ouvre faisant monter le niveau de l’eau et la péniche dans le sas. Une fois les niveaux d’eau égalisés, j’ouvre les portes de devant, et Laura fait passer la péniche. Après le passage réussi de la première écluse, nous sommes seuls. Je me dis que tout ira bien et que cela ne peut pas être bien difficile à une vitesse de trois miles à l’heure.

Le Pays noir

Appelé ainsi en raison de la suie qui couvrait le paysage produite par l’utilisation du charbon pour faire tourner les industries, Black Country comprend Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall et Wolverhampton et était au cœur de la révolution industrielle, produisant textiles, céramique, verre et autres pour le pays. Nous naviguons sur le canal Stourbridge et nous nous préparons au tunnel Netherton de 2,7 km de long et qui est juste assez large pour permettre à deux péniches de se croiser dans le tunnel; c’était le dernier tunnel construit pendant l’ère des canaux de Grande-Bretagne. Outre un puits de lumière sous chacune des nombreuses bouches d’aération et le phare sur la proue du bateau, tout est noir. Embracing this slower pace of life, we cruise effortlessly along the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal—considered one of the country’s prettiest canals—and through the rolling countryside toward Kidderminster, once the heart of England’s carpet-making industry. We reach the rail viaduct at Falling Sands and moor up for a quick bite as the magnificent Severn Valley Railway train steams by overhead. Then we’re back on the water, treated to peripheral views of canal-side pub gardens, wild residential gardens, ivy-covered lock keepers’ cottages and fields of curious horses. We putter under small moss-covered bridges, each named and numbered, some crumbling at the corners after years of boating activity. We drift through Worcester, a historic cathedral city, and the nearby locks at the Diglis Basin Marina that open onto the mighty River Severn—Britain’s longest river.

The Experience

Most mornings, we awaken to moody skies and a light fog hovering above the water. This only adds to the burst of smells, colours and sounds filling our senses as we set off for the day, bundled up in thick woolly sweaters while chowing down on breakfast sandwiches. We bump into first-time boaters like us, and our collective anxiety is replaced with nervous laughs and encouraging words as we gingerly pass each other. A group of wader-clad fishermen cheerfully lift their fishing rods out of our way as we work the angles of a tight right-hand turn to join the Stourbridge Canal. We moor at sunset, as the boat is only equipped for daytime use. Cool nights are spent on board drinking wine and revisiting tales of the day, or enjoying an alfresco canal-side pub supper washed down with a pint or two.

Adoptant un rythme de vie plus lent, nous voguons sur le canal Staffordshire & Worcestershire, considéré comme l’un des plus beaux du pays, et la campagne vers Kidderminster, autrefois le centre de l’industrie du tapis en Angleterre. Nous arrivons au viaduc ferroviaire de Falling Sands et amarrons pour casser la croûte alors que le magnifique train à vapeur Severn Valley passe au-dessus de nous. La plupart du temps, le ciel est sombre au réveil avec une légère brume au-dessus de l’eau, mais cela ne fait qu’ajouter aux odeurs, couleurs et sons qui nous préparent à la journée, bien emmitouflés dans les chandails de laine pour prendre le petit-déjeuner. Nous rencontrons des profanes comme nous; notre angoisse collective fait place à des rires nerveux et des paroles encourageantes en croisant les autres avec précautions. Des pêcheurs en cuissardes lèvent gaiement leurs cannes à pêche pendant que nous exécutons des manœuvres délicates pour serrer à droite et rejoindre le canal Stourbridge. Nous amarrons au coucher du soleil parce que la péniche ne convient qu’à la navigation de jour. Nous passons les nuits fraiches à bord à boire du vin et revivre la journée ou en prenant un repas bien arrosé sur la terrasse d’un pub près du canal. WESTJET.COM | MARCH 2018

Graffiti on the brick buildings signal that we are nearing Birmingham, home to England’s largest population outside of London. Cruising along the Birmingham Canal Navigations—rumoured to have more waterways than Venice—we turn into the Gas Street Basin and moor up for the night, joining the mass of full-time moorings and pleasure boaters. There’s plenty on offer in this revitalized city and we’re ready to hit the shops, take in a theatre show, and drink and dine at some of the city’s many restaurants

and bars. We book a waterfront table at Bistrot Pierre, set in what was once the headquarters of the Birmingham Canal Company, and end the night with a beer at the historic Brewmaster’s House. After Alvechurch Marina and Worcester, we’re on the home stretch, and, as I fluently close the gate on my final lock, I’m struck by how life aboard a narrowboat is a bite back at the modern world—nothing is instantaneous while cruising along the canal. You have to watch as time passes by, but that’s the romance of it.

Naviguant sur les Birmingham Canal Navigations, qui selon les rumeurs, comptent plus de voies navigables que Venise, nous entrons dans le bassin Gas Street, amarrons pour la nuit et rejoignons les masses de plaisanciers et de bateaux amarrés en permanence. Cette ville revitalisée bat son plein, et nous sommes prêts à faire les boutiques, voir les spectacles ou manger et boire dans les nombreux restaurants et bars.

Nous réservons une table près de l’eau au Bistrot Pierre, autrefois quartier général de la Birmingham Canal Company, et terminons la soirée par une bière à la brasserie historique Brewmaster’s House. Après la marina Alvechurch et Worcester nous prenons le chemin du retour; alors que je ferme sans mal la porte de la dernière écluse, je m’étonne que la vie à bord de ce bateau soit un peu en recul de la vie moderne. Rien n’est instantané en naviguant sur le canal. Il faut tout surveiller pendant que le temps file, mais c’est la beauté de la chose.

Of course, your wildlife encounters in this part of the island could be even more memorable. If watching a whale breach from the seat of a kayak is a bucket-list item for you, there are a couple of ways to make that dream come true. Although this part of the Island can feel remote, golf fans will still be able to find world-class links. The Vancouver Island Golf Trail is a 250-kilometre stretch that includes 13 courses between Campbell River in the north and Victoria, the southernmost city on the island. Driving south from Telegraph Cove, visitors can stop to play at two courses in Campbell River —
