MARK PRESTON

We are pleased to welcome Mark Preston back for his 6th solo exhibition at Red Rag Gallery. His latest collection of 40 new works painted in Derbyshire, Cornwall, the Lake District and Wales convey perfectly Mark’s fascination with the effects of changing weather and seasons on the landscape. His paintings capture these places in all their glory; sun, rain, snow, spring flowers, dramatic mountains and sunlit seas.

Mark develops a close connection with the places he paints, finding the more he gets to know an area the more he can see in it, the more able he is to capture the effects of weather and the seasons, ‘ it starts with a process and an endlessly fascinating struggle towards finding a painterly equivalent for what I see, feel and experience in the landscape. When I feel I’ve achieved this, or get a positive reaction from people, it gives me a sense of satisfaction that the hard work has paid off. ’

‘The challenge to adapt and improvise in changing conditions can be frustrating but it keeps me focused and stops me getting too comfortable or predictable. Hopefully, it gives the work more immediacy, and the emotions I feel at the time can go directly into the work.’

Painting en plein air requires dedication and persistence but it has rewarded him with images that are atmospheric and full of light and energy.

All paintings are for sale on receipt of this brochure.
