Stuart Buchanan Exhibition

8 - 22 March 2025

Stuart Buchanan (born Glasgow 1970) studied Fine Art Drawing and Painting at the Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 1992. He has been working as a professional artist since 1993.

Stuart generally works in the traditional medium of oils. His paintings are representational, with figures set in richly textured, colourful landscapes. Stuart’s paintings are easily identifiable. His art work displays a recurring theme of solitude. This is not to suggest his paintings are lonely but rather a celebration of peace and serenity. Buchanan creates a world of peace and refuge away from the day to day of the outside world.

His paintings depict mostly single figures and pairs and all share an enviable meditative state. The figures are often involved in an activity beyond the canvas and the viewer - such as gazing out to sea or at the stars, or daydreaming. He draws inspiration from his own childhood memories and experiences, as well as more current day to day life and the environment and landscapes that surround him.

“This new group of paintings sees me continue to explore familiar themes - drifting on the sea, walking in woods, seeing the moon or the sun rise and set. I’m always interested in capturing something in “the moment”like seeing your breath on a frosty morning, the sound of leaves underfoot, or feeling the morning sun on your face. These are little observations that I’ll witness then take into the studio. I try to paint these things, and by “paint” I mean to render these experiences with the substance of the paint, rather than to illustrate a scene. I need the paint to carry the image not just depict it. We all have these moments, many times a day and it’s important for me to recognise and enjoy them, then paint them.”
