DETROIT RED WINGS TEAM HISTORY

HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME Detroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a winning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.

TEAM COLORS Little is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s colors back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fire and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dating back to the mid1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do indeed seem fitting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.

THE LOGO After James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an amateur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth flight.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOGO The original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refined over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

ike many hockey players, Mike Modano sacrificed his two front teeth for the game he loves — but not on the ice. He actually lost them attending a Red Wings’ game with his father at Olympia Stadium in the early 1970s. While rushing to make it to his seat before the game started, an overenthusiastic young Modano stumbled and fell forward, knocking his teeth out on a chair. “They were my baby teeth, gladly enough,” Modano laughed. “I was four or five-years-old. I was trying to run through the aisle to get to my seat and get there and tripped.” 8

The NHL’s all-time leading Americanborn scorer has become infinitely more graceful when it comes to hockey, feted for his smooth skating ability and scoring prowess. But his passion, developed playing in suburban-Detroit rinks in Fraser, Oak Park, River Rouge, Melvindale, Ecorse, and later Joe Louis Arena, is what led the 40-year-old center to sign a one-year deal with the club in August. As a kid, the Livonia-native dreamt of someday wearing the winged wheel crest. For him, it would be hard not to. Not only did he attend “a ton” of Wings games, but he played for Little Caesars, a team founded by Wings owners Mike and RED WINGS TODAY

Marian Ilitch based out of a newly-constructed Joe Louis Arena. His proximity to NHL players while skating in a brandnew rink made lasting impressions on Modano. “It was the palace of hockey,” he said of JLA. “It was just a state-of-the-art building. Everybody loved going there. It was one of the better visiting locker rooms in the league, so it was ahead of its time at that moment.” Now over 30-years later, Modano dubs the rink “a classic,” but he prefers it that

way, having grown up without the Internet and 24-7 multimedia access to any player on any NHL team. “That’s all we had,” he said of the Wings. “We didn’t have the ability to watch every team … We just didn’t have that coverage. All we had was the news locally and just all you grew-up knowing was the Red Wings ... I always was down at the Joe and Olympia whenever I could.” Wings’ fans are notorious for being familiar with every rostered player, from the Hall-of-Famers to the fourth-line RED WINGS TODAY

grinders, and Modano is no exception. His favorites included, the popular Ron Duguay, Brad Park, and Danny Gare, but also lesser-knowns like Paul Woods and Tony McKegney. “Just being from Detroit, you’d not only know all the stars, you knew everybody,” Modano said. “It was a big following.” He even attended local clinics in the day run by Wings stars like Reed Larson, who spent more than nine seasons with Detroit from 1976-86. Though it was common for coaches to claim they had NHL-caliber youngsters in the camps, 12

Larson remembers Modano as being the real deal — an “electrifying” player. In a twist of fate, when an 18-year-old Modano entered the league with the Minnesota North Stars in 1988, Larson, who had joined the team that same year, mentored the baby-faced Michigander. They even roomed together on the road and in the off-season. “You look at him and you know the league and what you go up against and play against,” Larson said. “He had kind of that boyish look and you wonder how they can do it, then they get on the ice and they’re just amazing.”

Despite having spent his entire NHL career with what later became the Dallas Stars franchise, Modano heard how well Hockeytown treated its players. While he’d experienced it as an amateur, he never thought he’d play in Detroit as a pro. “I always thought about how it might be,” he admitted. And now that he is officially a Red Wing, Modano is pleasantly surprised at how

smooth the transition back home has been. “I really didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “But it’s been really great. It couldn’t have been better.” Larson is certain Modano made the right choice. “It’s a wonderful story,” Larson said. “And I think it will actually pay off, because I know Michael, and he’ll want to earn his keep. He’ll want to leave a mark.” RED WINGS TODAY

2010 COMMUNITY RELATIONS TOUR The Red Wings held their third annual community relations tour on Sept. 16, with two groups of players making numerous stops at elementary schools, hospitals and medical centers throughout the state en route to training camp in Traverse City. Forwards Justin Abdelkader and Drew Miller returned to East Lansing in the opening stop of the western leg of the tour to visit Sparrow Hospital Children’s Center where the two Michigan State alumni were heavily involved as students. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom and

Patrick Eaves visited the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans before joining Abdelkader and Miller in a homecoming celebration at Churchill Elementary School as Abdelkader returned to his former elementary school located just outside Muskegon. The east tour took Todd Bertuzzi, Darren Helm, Jimmy Howard and Mike Modano to the largest elementary school in Flint – Potter Elementary School – before visiting with military veterans at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw later that afternoon.

BACK TO SCHOOL JUSTIN ABDELKADER WORKS TOWARD FULFILLING A PROMISE TO MOM BY MICHAEL CAPLES

hen asked to describe perhaps the most-popular student in his class room, Professor Mike Behan called him hardworking, dedicated, and said he has shown a willingness to lead. The adjectives are traits that any hockey player should have, but Behan never coached his star pupil, nor was he a teammate, an opposing player, or a parent in the stands. Behan is Justin Abdelkader’s favorite professor at Michigan State University. The Red Wings’ forward took Behan’s media law class during his final full-season on the East Lansing campus, in 2007-08.

“It was after the MSU team won the national championship,” Behan said. “Actually, the other students truly seemed to find Justin as a regular guy. He was very approachable and really just a very nice student. I don’t think many of the students knew who he was. He was very unassuming. … He’d make a good lawyer after hockey.” Since Behan’s class, Abdelkader has continued to excel in hockey. During the 2008-09 season, the Muskegon-native was named to

the AHL All-Rookie team, and scored his first two NHL goals – in the Stanley Cup finals. Last season, he worked his way in to 50 games with the Wings, and was third on the team with 152 hits. Detroit general manager Ken Holland rewarded Abdelkader with a new twoyear contract this summer. Yet for all his achievements on the ice, Abdelkader is still working towards a major one off it. During his limited break from the NHL grind, the Wings’ forward returns to East Lansing to take summer classes. After taking

finance, natural science, and a business management class this summer, he is 14 credits shy of graduating with a business management degree. “It was definitely busy,” Abdelkader said of his summer workload. “I took nine credits, and on top of that working out and skating and stuff, so it kept me busy. Three hours a day, four days a week, I had class, but it was good, and I’m pretty close to finishing. Four classes away from finishing, so hopefully I’ll get that done next summer.” Abdelkader sub-leased an apart-

ment behind Dublin Square Irish Pub this summer, living on Abbott Road just minutes from the MSU campus. He said that being at a Big Ten school – with an estimated enrollment of 45,000 – allows him to shed his professional-athlete image and live like a regular college student, though it is getting harder to do so. “Maybe a little more this year than in the past,”Abdelkader said about getting noticed on campus. “But you know it’s still such a big campus, and people are from all over, not everyone’s a hockey fan, so I would say this summer more than any summer, but it wasn’t bad.” 44

The Wings’ forward has diligently worked towards his bachelor’s degree, even during hockey season by taking online classes. While he said he has never lived any popular college horror stories of his computer crashing during an online exam, there have been some stressful situations. “One year, my computer didn’t work, so I had to e-mail the teacher about turning in the assignment late,” Abdelkader said. “He was fine with it, he understood. … He was pretty understanding of the situation.” Abdelkader, 23, said that his favorite building on campus was Munn Ice RED WINGS TODAY

Arena, but then listed the Business College Complex as his favorite nonathletics place to be on campus. Besides utilizing the Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center, he also spent time this summer at the library, working on group projects with classmates. The Wings’ forward is even contemplating taking an independent-study class during the 2010-11 season to chip away at his final requirements. Abdelkader needs five general elective credits and nine business credits to complete his degree.

“Hopefully I’ll finish next summer,” he said. “I might do an independent study this year, do a paper on, I don’t know yet, just a paper, kind of through a class, so I’m looking into how that works. “I kind of promised my mom I would finish when I left (for the pros). I think it’s something good to have and it’s something that, while I’m there, I might as well take advantage of. Once I get older and have a family and kids, I’m not going to have much time to do it. Where did you go to elementary school? – Calli Jansen, Huntington Woods, Michigan “I went to Howard Taft in Wyandotte for first- through fourth-grade. Fifth, sixth and half of seventh I went to school in Lincoln Park at (now closed) LeBlanc Elementary off of Dix and I-75. Then I went to Southfield Christian Middle School. … I had a lot of great teachers, but I can tell you that Mr. (Bob) Montgomery was a great history teacher. I liked history a lot, plus he liked hockey.”

Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates? If so, who? I do not have any regular contact with any specific players, mainly because I have been in Europe since 1980 and when I am home to visit, the time is short and this limits my time for visiting friends and family. However, I have talked with Paul Woods over the phone a few times lately, and we have tried to meet-up in Ontario where we have summer cottages not too far from each other. Incidentally, over the last couple of years I have had the pleasure of meeting up with NHL referee Kerry Fraser a few times both in the States and over here in Europe. We played on a line together in Jr. B in Sarnia, and it is always fun reminiscing about the old days. Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? And why? I really like the way Pavel Datsyuk plays the game. He is so highly skilled and I am amazed at how he can execute some of these skills, such as his foot work with the puck, at his top end speed. What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing? Defeating Atlanta in the ’77-78 playoffs and then playing Montreal in the next round. Atlanta because they were a Stanley Cup favorite going into the playoffs, and Montreal because they were in the midst of their four straight Cups. Added into this mix, was the thrill of scoring the series winner against Atlanta. Which of the guys you played with was the toughest? We had a few very tough players such as Dennis Hextall, Dan Maloney, Dennis Polonich and Bugsy Watson. This lead to a few bench-clearing brawls with Philly, Toronto and Boston. Of course these brawls have been eliminated from today’s game through the “third man in” rule, and players being penalized for leaving their respective benches. Who was the funniest? Bugsy Watson always kept the guys on their toes with his jokes and high-jinx. Who had the biggest heart? Again, Bugsy Watson. He was always there for his teammates on and off the ice, and he has done a lot of work for the Special Olympics, which were just getting started back in the 70s. How has the NHL changed since you played? The skills are at a much higher level. Players are willing to experiment in a game with some fantastic tricks that no one has ever seen before. The “butterfly” goaltending style of today has entirely changed the way a player must shoot and deke in order to score. In the ’70s we used to shoot low to the left or right corner of the net. Today a player has to be able to pick the upper right or left corner of the net over the goalies shoulders. The players are bigger and better protected, but

due to all this protection, I believe the players have lost the respect for one another. Head shots were nonexistent back in the ’70s and ’80s. Toughest team (other than the Red Wings) when you played? It depends on how you define toughness. I would definitely say the Canadiens during their dynasty were the toughest team, because they could play the game any way the opposition wanted to; and play that specific style better than the opposing team. They were a highly skilled team with speed and they snuffed out the Broad Street Bullies from Philadelphia and helped put an end to the goon era nonsense. Who did you sit next to in the dressing room? Jim Rutherford was to my left the entire time I was in Detroit and to my right was the table for different kinds of tape, etcetera. To the right of that table I believe was Danny Grant for a few seasons until he was traded to L.A. early in the ’77-78 season. Who had the greatest infl uence on your career? I would say my family in general. My parents were very supportive and my dad had the rink made in the front yard every winter and was team manager of a couple of my teams. My brothers Pete and Jim were always pushing our skills to the next level through the fun times on the rink and at the local arena in Forest, Ontario. What advise would you give to kids playing today? Kids should just go out and have fun playing the game. However, their coaches have the responsibility to keep the fun in the game for the players. If the game leads to some opportunities later on, then that is a great bonus for them. It is also very important for the kids to have a well-rounded childhood by participating in other sports, and to develop themselves academically.

My bucket list: Skydive Favorite thing about Detroit sports fans: I think the best thing is that they’re really, really supportive. They’re all over. You see them in malls and stuff, and they’re really nice and always wish you good luck. So I think all around, they’re really good fans.
