DETROIT RED WINGS TEAM HISTORY
HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME Detroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a winning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.
TEAM COLORS Little is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s colors back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fire and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dating back to the mid-1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do indeed seem fitting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.
THE LOGO After James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an amateur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth flight.
EVOLUTION OF THE LOGO The original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refined over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

HAPPY DAYS
HAPPY HUDLER: Fox Sports color analyst Mickey Redmond has coined a new nickname for Hudler following his return to the WIngs from a one year stint in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.
T
he Red Wings haven’t had someone named George on their roster in nearly three decades. So it was peculiar when Danny Cleary was recently asked about Jiri Hudler, and replied with, “Who, George?” After the locker room confusion settled, Cleary explained himself, saying that Hudler’s passport lists his given name as George. Confirmation came from a few stalls down when forward Todd Bertuzzi overheard the conversation. “That’s his real name on the passport,” he insisted. If his teammates were more convincing then Hudler might be the sixth player in
franchise history named George, joining Hay, Patterson, Gee, Gardner and Lyle. But after Hudler set the record straight, he remains the third Jiri to ever don a Red Wings’ jersey, following Jiri Slegr and Jiri Fischer. “Oh, those guys,” said Hudler, debunking the rumor, and laughing about the situation. “It’s the translation for Jiri in the Czech language, the English version is George.” The man known as Happy Hudler – a moniker coined by TV color analyst Mickey Redmond – revealed that his new nickname was a result of sharing the translation with Bertuzzi. “I told Bert, and he spread the word around … like usual,” Hudler said. FIRE POWER: Wings coach Mike Babcock expects Hudler’s familiarity with the WIngs’ system to give a boost to the offense this season, saying in the off-season that he would like to see the Czech forward total 70 points. “That’s all he does.” Aside from being called George, and the friendly teasing that he receives from his old friends, Hudler said this return to the Wings following a one-year stint in Russia has been equable. “It’s smooth, it’s smooth off the ice,” said the native of Olomouc, Czech Republic. “There’s no question that I can be better than I was in the first couple games, but I feel pretty good.” Hudler said that more than anything else, he missed his teammates and friends in metro Detroit while he played for the Moscow Dynamo of the Kontinental 14

Hockey League. The 5-foot-10 center collected 19 goals and 35 assists last season in 54 regular-season games. He said it only took a few days to feel comfortable again in Hockeytown. “I’ve got a lot of friends here, I like the city, and I missed it,” he said. “It just took me a couple days, see everybody, and I feel really back at home.” Wings coach Mike Babcock expects Hudler’s familiarity with the Wings’ system to give a boost to the offense this season, saying in the off-season that he would like to see the Czech forward total 70 points. LOOKING TO HELP: To reach his scoring goals this season, Hudler has been paired with linemates Dan Cleary and all-time American-born scoring leader Mike Modano. player, but Hudler has some help with linemates Cleary and Mike Modano, the all-time leading American-born scorer in NHL history. “Obviously he’s one of the best to ever play the game,” Hudler said of Modano. “So it’s really exciting for me, a young guy, to play with a guy like him. He just fits right in. He’s professional and all-around great to be around.” The admiration runs both ways, Modano said. “It’s been good,” Modano said. “I think he’s very skilled; a very talented guy. He sees the ice real well, so it’s been just a learning curve with him and getting to know what
he enjoys doing, where he likes to be on the ice. It’s just taking a little time.” When asked about what it was like to be reunited on a line with Cleary, Hudler could only talk about his off-the-ice antics. “Yeah, I like Bear,” Hudler joked. “He’s a funny guy, you know?” His season-long sabbatical in Russia changed Hudler, who said that the locker room antics, which his Wings’ teammates had grown accustom, are in the past. He’s matured as a person, as well as a player. But Cleary had a different take. “Oh yeah, same old (Happy Hudler)” he said. “Maybe even happier. RED WINGS TODAY

COMMUNITY 2010 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS NIGHT Thanks to the generosity of Red Wings fans in attendance at the Breast Cancer Awareness Night game against Calgary on October 21, the Detroit Red Wings raised nearly $17,000 for the Liggett Breast Center in Grosse Pointe Woods as part of the National Hockey League’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative. The money will help cover the cost of breast cancer treatment among the uninsured and underinsured in the Metro Detroit area. Fans got involved in a variety of ways from participating in the goal puck draw and annual silent auction, which included players’ sticks specially wrapped in black hockey tape with small pink ribbons and used in warm-ups that night, to the 50/50 raffle and a sale of pink winter knit hats. Hundreds of fans joined the Red Wings players in signing an eight by two foot banner, which said that “the Detroit Red Wings support you” and was later hung in the infusion area at Liggett Breast Center. READY TO PLAY: After missing significant time to injury over the last few seasons, Cleary’s off-season agenda included knee surgery, rehab, then heading West to continue his off-season workout routine.
W
ith a Red Wings’ lineup that missed 307 man-games due to injury last season, the gritty forward played through pain. He soldiered through 64 games with a bum knee in addition to missing 16 contests with shoulder and groin injuries – all while managing to produce 15 goals and 19 assists. In order to recover from a grueling season and prepare for the next one, the first item on Cleary’s off-season agenda was having surgery to repair a troublesome knee. As soon as he finished rehab, he headed west for what could be considered a working vacation. “I started going out there around 2000,” he said. “You get the best of both worlds: 50

great training, great weather. It was a fun place to live, so I just kind of stayed with it … I love going out there. My family enjoys it, especially the beach – the kids love that. So it’s great training, but I really get two birds with one stone.” Cleary spent his first five summers in Venice, Calif., with noted trainer T.R. Goodman of Pro Camp Sports, who has worked with stars like Chris Chelios and Sidney Crosby. After that, Cleary decided to try something slightly different by heading to Carson, Calif., to train at the Athletes Performance facility in the Home Depot Center. It has programs tailored to NHL players to get them into top form, which a worn-down Cleary needed more than ever.

TEAM RECOGNITION: “He’s in great shape,” says linemate Jiri Hudler who has trained with Cleary in the past. “He’s just flying up and down, he’s battling, hitting, scoring goals. He’s playing 15-20 minutes every night, he’s playing penalty kill, power play. He’s an all-around player.” He has carved a niche for himself in Detroit’s roster as the quintessential allaround player. Not only does he subject his body to beatings when parked in front of the opposition’s net and battling in the corners, but he can also score. Despite missing a fair chunk of the 200708 season with a broken jaw, Cleary still managed to post a single-season high for points (42) and tied a single-season best for goals (20). And who can forget the 2009 playoffs, when Cleary netted the seriesclinching goal in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals against Anaheim, then scored five goals in five games in the conference finals against Chicago.
In order to put up such numbers while fulfilling a grinder role, he has to be in prime condition, which his teammates have noticed. “He’s in great shape,” his linemate Jiri Hudler said, who has trained with Cleary in the past. “You can tell the way he plays. He’s just flying up and down, he’s battling, hitting, scoring goals. He’s playing 15-20 minutes every night, he’s playing penalty kill, power play. He’s an all-around player.” According to Mike Modano, Cleary is “without a doubt” one of the most physically fit players in the Red Wings’ line-up. “You can tell,” Modano said. “He looks in shape, he moves well, he doesn’t get tired RED WINGS TODAY

NO DOUBT: New linemate Mike Modano says Cleary is “without a doubt” one of the most physically fit players in the Red Wings’ line-up. “He looks in shape, he moves well, he doesn’t get tired out there. He takes his role and his position real seriously.” out there. Just really above the curve. He’s just a real steady guy. Prepares well, takes care of himself, just mentally really kind of involved and engaged. He takes his role and his position real seriously.” Not only does Cleary lead by example with his work ethic, but he also has a notable vocal presence in a locker room filled with veterans, despite having to recently surrender his status as the unofficial team DJ to defenseman Brad Stuart. “He’s a big character for this team,” Hudler said of Cleary. “He sets the tone at the games, at practices. He’s really loud in the locker room.” 56
RED WINGS TODAY
And now that he has had time to recover and put his injury-plagued seasons behind him, Cleary is primed and ready to contribute offensively and help the Wings put themselves in position to do well in the playoffs. “The offensive side of it, I believe, will come because I’m skating and feel healthy and we’ve got good players,” Cleary said. “But my goal is to make sure I’m skating good on the forecheck, and pretty much do my role, control what I can control up there. Get our line going, we have good chemistry. That’s how we’re going to win in the end, just having good depth.”

SINCE YOU ASKED
WITH NICKLAS LIDSTROM, VALTTERI FILPPULA AND TOMAS HOLMSTROM
RED WINGS’ FANS ASK, AND RED WINGS’ PLAYERS HAVE THE ANSWERS FOR NICKLAS LIDSTROM:
If there was one player in NHL history that you could play with today who would it be and why? – From Kathy Koenig, Marquette, Michigan “Probably Bobby Orr, just to see what kind of player he was. I’ve seen films, but it would be fun to get a chance to play with him and have him as a partner. … Even though you’re not from here and followed him as a kid, but you know the history and have seen the tapes. You know what guys like that meant to people here in North America, so it’s special to meet former players like that.”
FOR VALTTERI FILPPULA:
Do you have a roommate on the road, and if so who is it, and do you like having him as a roommate? –From Angela Kotkowski, Wyandotte, Michigan “I do have a roommate. It’s Mule (Johan Franzen), and he’s a very good roommate. A lot of times we obviously fly in a little later and basically go to dinner then go to bed. But when we get a day off we plan stuff, too.”
FOR TOMAS HOLMSTROM:
I used to love watching Dino Ciccarelli tie up the front of the net. Did you begin playing that way by watching Dino and others, or have you always played that way? –From Adam Steiger, Mooresville, N.C. “Yeah, Dino had just left when I got there in 1996, he went to Tampa Bay. So for sure, I watched him a little bit before, and a lot when he was in Tampa too. He scored over 500 goals being a feisty guy, so it’s really impressive. I think that’s how I’ve pretty much been playing like all my career, since I was 16, maybe. I think I started more and more going to the net and stuff like that.”

REUNION A Q&A WITH
MIKE FOLIGNO By Bill Roose Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates? If so, who? Usually if there’s a golf outing, we run into each other and some of the guys. Dale McCourt lives in the same area in Sudbury (Ont.). Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? And why? Probably (Nicklas) Lidstrom. He’s a very, very accomplished, poised individual, and he’s a very quiet leader and has been for quite a number of years. And you tell in the likes of a Scotty Niedermayer what that kind of player does for an organization. What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing? My first year, rookie year, I scored 36 goals, and having the likes of Ted Lindsay here and just the tradition that was around when you see people like that involved in the game. Just to be a part of that nostalgia was a very proud moment for me. Just so many great memories here; we closed the Olympia and opened up Joe Louis, and then the All-Star Game was here and Gordie Howe played in that game. I was in the stands for that game. Wish I was playing, but that was a lot of fun. Which of the guys you played with was the toughest? There were a few when I played here. We had Dennis Polonich. We had Willie Huber, God bless his soul. We had Reed Larson and Perry Miller, who was another tough guy. We had a pretty good, strong-willed group, and unfortunately we didn’t accomplish as much as we would have liked to, but as far as toughness, we had a lot of tough guys on our team. Who was the funniest? Paul Woods. He would crack you up. He would have that smirky little smile going, and all of the jokes that we would play on each other. But when it came time to play, Paul Woods was one of the hardest working players. He was a very good player to emulate as a young man. Who had the biggest heart? I thought Perry Miller. He was the guy that would walk into Philadelphia and he would protect us. Being a young guy coming into the league – even though you were a physical player – you’re not ready for the challenges of some of the men that are in the league, men that want to do battle against you. Perry Miller really looked out for the younger players. What was your favorite restaurant in metro Detroit? We had a few of them. I remember the Lindell A.C. for the burgers downtown, and Ginopolis out by Orchard Lake, and the Excalibur, and the Pontchartrain. That place used to be so much fun. How has the NHL changed since you played? The game is so much faster now. The players are committed year-around. It’s a 365-day a year preparation process that takes place. I think that’s the biggest difference, because in the
older days you could get away for the summertime, and come to training camp to get into shape, not already be in shape. Toughest team (other than the Red Wings) when you played? I think there were a few of them. The Boston Bruins definitely had a tough team with Stan Jonathan, (John) Wensick, and (Terry) O’Reilly. Philadelphia had a tough team. Atlanta had a tough team that year. Geez, there were a lot of tough players in our league, because that was the first year that the NHL and the WHA combined, so they had access to all of the best players and the top toughest. It just all came together. Who did you sit next to in the dressing room? I don’t remember. What do you love most about the game? There is so much to love. It’s a very entertaining game. I remember saying a few years ago that there was no way that the game can get any faster. And I had those same thoughts after last season, and that was the best year I’ve ever seen. It just gets better and better, but the guys are so committed. They put their livelihood on the line every day. They play their hearts out and I believe that’s why the fan-base is so strong. Who had the greatest influence on your career? There are a lot of people. But in Detroit it was the players that I played with. They had a real positive influence on me. It was Dennis Polonich always taking us to dinner at his house, and Peter Mahovlich being my centerman, and roommate as well, and guys like Ted Lindsay, who would come into the room, talk to you, and really make you feel comfortable about your role and the expectations here. What advice would you give to kids playing today? I try to stay real positive with them and make them realize that it’s a lot of hard work. And if they don’t do it, someone else is doing it. … I think you have to be prepared, and I don’t mean just doing the work in the weight room. It comes from being a well-rounded person, from caring about other people, and when you’re a part of a team that’s the biggest thing that you can do to become a great teammate.
