DETROIT RED WINGS Team History

HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME Detroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a winning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.

TEAM COLORS Little is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s color back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fire and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dating back to the mid1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do indeed seem fitting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.

THE LOGO After James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an amateur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth flight.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOGO The original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refined over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

Hall welcomes STEVE Yzerman into elite company By Michael Caples

T

his year’s Hockey Hall of Fame induction class served as another opportunity for the hockey world to celebrate the achievements of Steve Yzerman. Yzerman’s many achievements were pointed out as he approached the stage to give his acceptance speech in Toronto on Nov. 9. How he finished sixth alltime in goals and sixth all-time in points. How he won three Stanley Cups, and one Conn Smythe Trophy. How he be

came the longest serving captain in NHL history, and how he built a dynasty in Hockeytown. “It’s been a thrill for me for 22 seasons to play amongst the greatest players of this era,” Yzerman said. “It’s such an honor for me to be inducted into the hall here tonight. As a boy, my idols were hockey players. … For me to go into the Hall of Fame with these players is a tremendous honor.” RED WINGS TODAY

hall welcomes yzerman

Prior to the induction, Yzerman discussed his career, and his decision to move to the Wings’ front office. While Wings’ fans wish that he could have continued to play, Yzerman said the decision was simple. “I don’t feel I had anything left actually, physically,” he said. “The desire to play wasn’t really there. What I had hoped coming out of the lockout … a year off of training, rest for my knee, that it would feel better. It really didn’t make any difference.” The fourth overall draft pick in 1983, Yzerman recorded 692 goals, 1,063 assists and 1,755 points, helping the Red 8

RED WINGS TODAY

Wings build the franchise to a perennial power. But what if he ended up with the New York Islanders, who held the pick above the Wings in 1983? Growing up, Yzerman’s idol was Bryan Trottier, a legendary Islanders forward. Instead, the Islanders chose a local Detroit boy named Pat LaFontaine. “I was just excited about being drafted,” Yzerman said. “Certainly the thought was there, ‘Wow, I could go to the Islanders, get a chance to play on the team as Trottier and (Mike) Bossy.’ They picked Pat, which wasn’t a surprise to me. I never looked back and never really gave it any thought after that.”

Luckily for Detroit, Yzerman was still available for then-GM Jimmy Devellano at the No. 4 spot, and the rest is history. Yzerman’s leadership in the organization is legendary and now shows in captain Nicklas Lidstrom. “He was a quiet leader,” Lidstrom said. “But he knew when to step-up and say the right things, or score the big goal on the ice, or play well when the team really needed him to. I try to do the same thing - lead by example on the ice.” Yzerman said it feels weird to be called a hall-of-famer. “I’m not used to it,” he said. “It does feel strange to be considered a Hall of Famer, because growing up and really being in the league, you run into the Hall of Famers, you would see them on TV, see the names, it’s a pretty awesome group.”

The Wings’ vice president made a point to thank everyone that helped him along the way during his induction speech: the Ilitch family, Devellano, general manager Ken Holland, and all his teammates and coaches. He wrapped up his speech on the same note. “Entering my fourth year of retirement, I look back on my life in hockey, how it shaped me, and all it’s given me,” Yzerman said. “I’m certain of one thing: I’m where I want to be, working with and amongst people I enjoy. The hockey world is a very special place, and I have the opportunity tonight to thank you all for making that happen for me. Thank you.” RED WINGS TODAY

TweetSuite 09 In November, the Red Wings hosted their first-ever Tweet Suite event at Joe Louis Arena and allowed the fans to report live during Steve Yzerman Night as the Wings took on the Vancouver Canucks. As promised, the Red Wings New Media & Publishing Department is offering more access and contests for our fans than ever before. Since fans have indicated they wanted live updates directly from other fans on their experience while at a game, we listened and delivered. The six selected winners entered into a contest posted on our Facebook (facebook. com/detroitredwings) and Twitter (twitter. com/detroitredwings) pages. The contest challenged users to submit a video and share why they admired Yzerman for a chance to report live from a suite as the organization honored him at JLA for his recent induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Aside from seats in a suite and Internet access to tweet their experience, fans were also treated to a few other experiences. Throughout the night, the winners were surprised by visits from Yzerman and former Red Wings’ tough guy Joe Kocur, along with the opportunity to sit in Section 122 -- behind the player’s bench -- for one period. Didn’t enter the Twitter contest? Don’t worry, watch for more opportunities like this on our Facebook or Twitter pages throughout the season. Tweet you later!

TIM CHEVELDAE

reunion a Q&A with Tim Cheveldae By Bill Roose

Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates? If so, who? The only time we meet is if we have any social events or if I go back to Detroit, but nobody on a regular basis. I talk to Dave Lewis a couple times a year, and Mike Sillinger lives in Regina (Saskatchewan), which is about two and a half hours south of here, so every once in a while we see each other at events and things. Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? And why? Well, I played with Nick Lidstrom, and I think he’s arguably top-three as far as greatest defensemen that ever played in my opinion. I think he is just as good as everybody thinks he is, I think he’s actually better. What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing? Probably coming back, beating Minnesota at the time we were down 3-1 (in the series) and we came back to win in Game 7 in 1992. Which of the guys you played with was the toughest? Bob Probert, his physicality I would say. Certainly, he’s probably one of the toughest fighters that every played the game. Who was the funniest? Shawn Burr was pretty quick with the quips and the sharp tongue, and he wasn’t shy to voice it either. He hasn’t changed, you know exactly what I‘m talking about. Who had the biggest heart? The guy that comes to mind right off the hop was Gerard Gallant, and Steve Yzerman would certainly be up there. What was your favorite restaurant in metro Detroit? I can’t think of the name, but I lived in Farmington Hills, and it was on a corner and a lot of times after games I would stop … I can’t think of the name, but they had this chicken dish that a lot of times after games I would go to. It was on 10 Mile or 11 Mile, and one of those roads there. I lived on 14 Mile and Haggerty and Halsted. Every once in a while I’d go back, and I don’t think it’s there anymore. How has the NHL changed since you played? Three things come to mind. Coaching, as far as way more time spent on systems. Players are in way better

shape now as far as conditioning, so speed is a lot greater, and goaltending now is a lot better. They are way better athletes, and they make saves that I think a lot of us would just dream of. Toughest team (other than the Red Wings) when you played? The Chicago Blackhawks. We played them sometimes 10, 12 games a year. Of course Mike Keenan was their coach, and they had (Mike) Peluso, (Stu) Grimson, Chris Chelios was a key part, and even though he didn’t drop the gloves, he played a physical game. Playing in that small little rink, you had to play a physical game. Who’d you sit next to in the dressing room? Besides the other goalie, I sort of had my own stall, so at the end of my career it was Chris Osgood, but I had Greg Millen, Vincent Riendeau, Allan Bester. What do you love most about the game? Probably the competition, getting on the ice, winning as a team. There’s no greater feeling then coming off the ice in a hard-fought battle, and you’re all sweaty, and you look around and you accomplished something as a team. And secondly would be the camaraderie, as far as being with the players, being with the guys. Who had the greatest influence on your career? I get asked that question, and there wasn’t really one person that came to mind as far as ‘This was the guy that led me down this road or down this path.’ I had a baseball coach; he was actually my first hockey coach. We lived in a little town so it wasn’t uncommon that we would have the same coaches, and I think he taught me about how to be professional, the way you approach the game, the way you handle yourself, the way you conduct yourself. What advise would you give to kids playing today? Make sure you’re playing for fun, and pay attention to details, the little things. Take pride in all the little details of the game. A lot of times it’s focused -- if you’re a forward -- on points and scoring, but there’s a lot more to the game then just that and you want to take pride in those areas.

UPDATE Steve Cady (left) and Ron Mason (right, circa 1978) were honored by Miami and Bowling Green, respectively.

CCHA Icons Honored Two of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s most influential men, Steve Cady, the former head coach and current senior associate athletic director at Miami, and his good friend Ron Mason, a cofounder of the CCHA and former Bowling Green head coach, were honored by Miami and Bowling Green with enshrinement into each school’s athletic hall of fame, respectively. “Coach Mason called me and told me that he was going into their Hall of Fame at Bowling Green and was hopeful that I could be a part of it,” Cady said. “He told me it was October 24th and I said, ‘Well, Coach, we got a little bit of a problem here because ironically I’ve been selected to Miami’s Hall of Fame and they’re doing it on the exact same day.’” Cady served as the head coach for Miami hockey from 1976-85 before assuming an administrative role in the school’s athletic department, his current role. Prior to coming to Miami, Cady was a graduate assistant at Bowling Green under Mason. While Mason never coached at Miami, Cady believes that Mason has played a critical role in the growth of the hockey program at Miami, where the RedHawks’ home rink is named after Cady. “He’s been instrumental since I came here to Miami,” Cady said. “Really all we tried to do was model our program after all that he had done with his program

and he was instrumental in Miami getting into the CCHA. Miami hockey owes a great deal to Ron Mason, as do I.” Mason, who helped found the CCHA when he was coach at Lake Superior State College, coached at Bowling Green from 1973-79. While coaching the Falcons, Mason led BGSU to three CCHA regularseason titles and three CCHA Tournament titles, as well as becoming the first CCHA team to advance to the Frozen Four. “That was a breakthrough, and it wasn’t easy,” Mason said. “Now, many CCHA teams have been able to win national championships.” This past year, the future of the Bowling Green hockey program was in doubt, but thanks to public support from numerous Falcon hockey dignitaries, including Mason, the program is looking to use methods used by Miami to return to national prominence. “I think there is a real commitment now to endow scholarships for hockey at BGSU and see if we can get the hockey program back to where it was at one time,” Mason said. “It’s difficult today because there are so many good teams, but if you look at Miami, which is a Mid-American Conference school like Bowling Green, they’ve been able to bring their program back.”

This annual program provides life-saving smoke detectors to low income families throughout metro Detroit. Over the past three seasons, more than 3,500 smoke detectors have been distributed and installed in homes within Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. Fans looking to participate are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped smoke detectors to the Red Wings home games on Jan. 23 (Los Angeles) and Jan. 29 (Nashville). Zetterberg has pledged to match all collections with his own personal donation to the cause. Collection bins will be located just inside the two main concourse entrances.

Who is the real Brad May? By Christy Hammond

V

eteran left winger Brad May inked a one-year deal with Detroit on Oct. 8. His tough guy, enforcer-type persona on the ice and his charismatic personality off the ice has quickly made him a popular guy in the locker room and among fans. It’s been an easy adjustment to make for May and it doesn’t hurt that the 38-year-old is no longer the oldest guy in the lineup. Since joining the Red Wings, he now has five teammates close to him in age. Once you meet May, it’s easy to see why he’s a favorite in the locker room. “He’s that ultimate teammate that you want and you have here,” Todd Bertuzzi, May’s former teammate in Vancouver, explained. “He does everything he’s asked of, and let’s face it, the guy’s almost 40 years old, and he’s still dropping the gloves and doing what he does on the ice to help his team out and make our stars be able to have a little more freedom out there.” 50

The Toronto native has three loves in his life that rank above hockey: his wife Brigette, 13-year-old son Tyler and 10-year-old daughter Samantha. May enjoys golfing and traveling with his family in his free time. In fact, he bought a farmhouse and some land to the northeast of Toronto with his first signing bonus from Buffalo back in 1990. May and his father wanted to see the land converted into a golf course. Eventually, the pair sold the land to developers, who build golf courses, in 2004-05. His father still lives on that land, which was made into a $26 million golf course, and 52

May’s family makes the trek up there to visit him, and golf. May’s mother was a travel agent so he did a lot of traveling while growing up. Despite his love for traveling, May struggles to name just one favorite place to visit. His list includes Greece (where he spent his honeymoon), Rome, London, the Caribbean and Cabo San Lucas. When he’s not traveling or golfing in his spare time, May enjoys helping out charities like Shoot for a Cure Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, which has a special place in his heart.

Did you know? He may have all the time in the world for charity, but May doesn’t have the patience or time to learn how to cook. He does admit that he’s a sucker for chocolate and other desserts. May has a wide range of music on his iPod, but his favorite type is Irish music particularly the Dropkick Murphys. Other favorite musical artists include, U2 and Garth Brooks, who he has seen many times in concert and has even gotten to meet.

During the NHL lockout in 2004-05, May decided to spearhead the “Brad May and Friends Hockey Challenge” to raise money for charities in British Columbia. An organization like Canuck Place Children’s Hospice receives approximately 20 percent of its funds from the Canucks so May wanted to ensure that the charity wouldn’t run into any financial troubles because of the lockout. This challenge was essentially a tour of games with May and a bunch of his friends playing hockey against local junior teams. His friends

include, Bertuzzi, Jarome Iginla, Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk, Ryan Smyth and Markus Naslund. All in all, the tour raised over $1 million for charity. “We’re so lucky, fortunate to be professional athletes and get paid for a game that we all love to play,” May said. “When you can go out there because you’re a hockey player and because you know people and can reach people, you can actually enhance the lives of others and maybe help out in a small way. I have all the time for that.” RED WINGS TODAY
