Facts  Currently, approximately 1% of the world's population is dependent on desalinated water to meet daily needs, but the UN expects that 14% of the world's population will encounter water scarcity by 2025 (globalwaterintel.com).  Currently, the roughly 15,000 desalination plants worldwide have the capacity to produce 540.3 billion ft3 (15.3 billion m3) of water per year; less than 0.5 percent of global water demand. Some 47 percent of this capacity is in the Middle East. (National Geographic).  The largest thermal desalination plant in the world was the 880,000 m3/day Shoaiba-3 desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, when displaced in 2014 by the 1,025,000 m3/day Ras Al Khair project in Saudi Arabia, which uses both membrane and thermal technology (globalwaterintel.com).  ADNOC General Utility Plant (GUP) which uses MSF Technology, produces 53,000 m3/day.

Water Conservation Water Conservation Measures:  Ensure that water abstraction is sustainable.  Ensure that discharges to land & marine do not contain toxic or harmful substances.  Strategies should be developed for the management of water resources and minimize impact on environment. Design Standards & Achievements:  Sea water (closed-loop) used for crude refining, gas processing, and petrochemical industry.  Cooling towers design is based on Fin-Fan coolers vs. water chillers towers.  Re-use of STP effluent for greenery and plantation.  Artificial coral reefs construction and mangrove plantations; sea grass planation; enhancing water quality.  Carwash re-use of waters at ADNOC-Distribution Petrol Filling Stations.  Water for the World Program; Supporting water access projects, (Borouge PE polymers used in manufacturing of water distribution grid in Asia). 14


Water for the World

Water for the World (a CSR Program), 2007 by ADNOC’s Company “Borouge”:  Supporting water access projects; supply of piped fresh water to villages in Nepal, Sichuan-China, Abruzzi-Italy.  Developing and promoting best-practices; initiated Gulf Plastics Pipe Academy (GPPA), raising standards & knowledge on quality / installations / maintenance techniques.  Raising awareness in communities; JV shareholder initiated a ‘Virtual’ Water school.  Advancing sustainable water management; tools are developed to achieve the target, applying water footprinting of plastics in our value chains.

Re-use of Produced Waters Factors Affecting Re-Use of Produced Waters, example:  Remote treatment sites, Storage infrastructure, Distribution, etc.  Sulfates content, H2S, TDS, Chlorides, Radioactivity, other pollutants, etc.

Factors Affecting Re-Use in Drilling, example:  Water hardness compounds; Calcium, Magnesium. (scaling tendency potential).  Sulfates can be used by bacteria to create hydrogen sulfide.  Barium, which would create scale in tubulars once combined with sulfates.  High concentrations of Iron can create emulsions and plugging.
