IwasborninSurrey,EnglandandlivedthereuntilIwasage 11.SincethenIhavelivedinBrisbanecompletinghigh schoolandcurrentlyattendingQUT.IspentSemester1of 2019onexchangelivinginSwedenbetweenJanuaryand JuneandusedthistimetolearnaboutScandinaviandesign andlivingwhilstvisitingotherEuropeancountriesand minglingwithotherinternationalstudents.

I’mastrongbelieverthattravellinghasmademeabetter designerandwillcontinuetodoso.Whendesigninga landscapethatisusedbysomanyindividuals,Ithinkbeing abletoempathisewithpeoplefromdifferentbackgroundsis criticaltoproducingastrongdesign.

01 CURLEWKEYS

2020 year3semester2

LikemanyoftheBrisbane’sseasidesuburbsShorncliffe isalreadyexperiencingtheeffectsof sealevelrise(SLR) andwillcontinuetodosointothefuture.Thisnotisnot onlyputspressureonthehumanpopulation,buthas significantramificationsforanalreadyendangeredsea bird: theEasternCurlew.

Australia’slargestshorebirdhasseenan80%decrease init’spopulationsincethe1980sprimarilyduetohuman intervention,butnowitisalsofacingthechallengeof SLR.Asthewaterrises,criticalfeedingandroosting habitatofthebirdswillbedestroyedrequiringan intervention.

EasternCurlewsrelyontheirfarsightednesstopreempt theapproachofpotentialthreatsandflyaway. Unfortunatelytraditionalinter-tidalroostinghabitatsno longersufficeashumansanddogswilloftenspookthe birdscausingthemtofly.

Thisseemsminor,butasamigratorybird,thisuseof energyspellsdisasterastheycommutebacktotheir nestinggroundsinSiberia.Tragically,manywillsimply runoutofenergyanddie.

Assuchacollectionofnewhabitatswasproposed,one safeandseparatefromhumans: CURLEWKEYS.

TWOBIRDSONESTONE

Thecreationofagroupofislandsforthebirdsalso presentsanopportunitytocurberosiononthemainland byreducingincomingwaveaction.Overanextended periodoftime,thiswillallowmoresedimenttosettle, increasingtheforeshoreinresponsetoSLR.

Aseriesofislandsorkeyswoulddothisbestandalso allowsforadditional,uniquehabitatcreation,muchof whichhadbeenlostsincesettlerinterventioninthe Shorncliffearea.

CAISSONISLANDS

Concretecaissonswereselectedasthemostviable optionforcreatingman-madeislandforseveral reasons.Theirverticalstructureimpactstheexisting seabedfarlessthantraditionalislands,theycanbefilled withselectsediment,suitablefordifferentvegetation types,allowingforvariablehabitatsonmultipleislands.

Theirmodularformlendsitselftoeasierplanningand construction,withtheabilitytohavethemfloatedinto placebeingvastlymoreefficientthanthenaturalisland buildingprocess.

Situatedinanexposedpositiontodiscouragethe establishmentofdensevegetation.Keptwellclearofthe constructedchannelcomingoutofCabbage-TreeCreek toavoidanthropologicaldisturbance.
2.EUCALYPTISLAND Closesttothemainlandandthebestprotectedfromwind andlargewaveaction.Allowsfortheestablishmentof moredenseEucalyptforest. 3.CALLITRISISLAND Moreexposedandvegetatedwiththemorecommon coastalspecies,knowntodowellinsimilarconditions.
4.MANGROVEISLAND Attemptatsimulatingthenaturalenvironmentof Avicenniamarina.Thelocationjustbehindthebreakwater willspeedupthenaturalsedimentdepositionthat providesthebaseforwhichtheycangrow.
5.BREAKWATER Crucialtothesuccessofthe MANGROVE and CURLEW ISLAND.Reduceswaveaction,especiallyinstorm situations,allowingnaturalsedimentdepositiononthe islandsaswelltheShorncliffeHeadland.

DevelopingHabitats

Theeucalyptislandisperhapsthemostchallengingof theislandstoestablish.Itiscriticalthatsoilismaintained andincreasedinordertoprovidethebaseneededtofor Eucalyptuspillularis tosurvive. Casuarinaequisetifolia and Acacialongifolia areinitiallyplantedintheyear2050as pioneerspecies.Thesewillbegintolayerorganicmatter creatingnewsoilandholdexistingsoilwiththeirfast growth

By2070thesoilwillbesuitableenoughtoplant

Eucalyptuspilluaris,mirroringahabitatthatoncewas commonplaceonthemainland.

02 FLORALRESOURCESINTHESUBURBS

TheVarroamitehascauseddevastatingdistructionto theworld’spopulationoftheEuropeanHoneybee(Apis mellifera). Australiaistheonlycountryintheworldthat isfreeoftheVarroamite,butAustraliaisalsorareinthe factthatourcropsrelyentirelyonpollinationbyferal populationsonApismellifera.Thismakesforan extremelyfragilerelationshipbetweenourpremiumcrop pollinatorandourfoodsecurity.

ThesuburbsofBrisbanepresentanopportunityto diversifyandincreasethepopulationofinsect pollinators,suchthatinthelikelyeventthattheVarroa mitemakesittoourshores,wemightalleviatewhat wouldotherwisecatastrophicloses.

Currently,suburbiaislinedwithgreenspacethat provideslittletonobenefittoanyinsectsthatmayseek tolivethere.Achangeinattitudeisneeded;onethat mighttransformtheabundanceofunusedlawns,tonew, self-plantedandmanagedgardens.

Suchafeatrequiresstrategicplanningthathasthe publicattheforefront,bututilisesgovernmentled initiativesthateventuallypermeateintotheprivate sector.

Theoverallincreasingfloralresourcesforournative insects,willprovideaddedresilienceintheeventof massexterminationofAustralianagriculture’sprimary pollinator.

Aninclusivestrategy

Afouryear,fourphasestrategicplanwillbeimplemented inordertosupplyinsectpollinatorswiththefloral resourcestheyrequiretothriveinthesuburban environment.

PhasingwillbeginwithafloodofinformationtotheLocal GovernmentArea(LGA)sector,educatingthelocal community.Thestrategywillclosewiththatsamelocal communitybecomingalmostentirelyresponsibleforthe ongoingsuccessandmaintenanceofthestrategy.Here aresixkeyactionsintrinsictothestrategy:

1.Engagethecommunity: educationofthecommunity withintheLGAsectorregardinghowtheycancreate gardensfitforinsectpollinators.Thelearnedinformation isthenappliedattheirprivateresidences.

2.Schoolprograms: introduceschoolagedchildrentothe processofcreatingandmaintaininginsectpollinator gardens.

3.Councilassistance: BrisbaneCityCounciltoassistin transformationsofkeyareasindistinctlyvisiblelocations.

4.Mobilisethewidercommunity: localscreatingand maintainingtheirowngardensandverges,replacingthe currenttrendofmowingandmaintaininglawns.

5.Promotecompetition: asenseofprideinthegardens localsmaintain,especiallythatofthevergegarden, throughtheapplicationofcompetitionsbothbetween individualsandcommunities.

6.Adherencetostate,regionalandlocalpolicies: usedas guidelinesforeachstrategy,ensuringtheyandtheir respectivetacticsholdmeritatallthreelevels

Asaphase1strategy,theschoolswillbecriticalin progressingtheplantingofvergesdeeperinsuburbia. Withyoungchildren,lackingthepreconceivednotionof howvergesshouldbeused,theywillbeabletotakethese ideashomeandbeginthetransitiontoamoreflorallyrich LGAsector.

Ihavedevelopedmyhanddrawingskillsentirelysince startingmydegree.Mydrawingsarenotallcompletely relevanttolandscapearchitecturebutshowmyown progressionandartisticexperimentationoutsideof structuredassignments.Ifindsketchestobeoneofmy bestskillsforcommunicatingmydesignsandthoughts.I continuetodrawdailyandimprove.

Sincepickingmyselfupafilmcamerain2018,Ihave continuedtostepoutsidemycomfortzoneandhonemy skillsbehindthecamera.Ioftenusephotographyasan excusetoexplorewhereIotherwisewouldn’tandgain newperspectivesonlandscapes.Mysubjectsvary greatly,butmostrecently,Ihavebeenseekingoutnative Australianplantshelpingbroadenmyplantknowledge especiallywithregardtohowindividualspecimenscome toexistintheirnaturalrange.
