Community Competition over

How local businesses can support each other and our community

When small businesses collaborate, they create both economic growth and community building. Instead of competing against each other, they can pool their resources, share customers, and create a more vibrant local economy.

The annual “Shop the Town” event in Weyburn, held every November, is a prime example of how small businesses can work together to support local shopping and build up the business community.

“‘Shop the Town’ has definitely grown since its start a number of years ago. It began with a few friends getting together and trying to come up with ideas to support each other, our small businesses, and our community,” says Pam Molde from Weyburn’s Evelyn Lane boutique.

“Its success can be seen by the increase in local shops choosing to participate in the event each year, and more people coming out to shop at this annual November event. It’s great exposure for many of our small businesses in town, bringing new people through their doors.”

The event is designed to encourage residents to shop locally with promotions, discounts, and giveaways. This cooperative effort helps bring more foot traffic to each store, which is

critical for small businesses that rely on local shoppers.

“I believe the local businesses involved have come to see collaborating as a group and supporting one another makes sense in so many ways. It helps keep a significant percentage of money in our community and we all want our community to thrive,” says Pam. “Coming up with creative ideas to bring people into our businesses and community sparks economic growth. People are drawn to events that offer a selection of products and some great deals!”

One of the key advantages of events like Shop the Town is that they create a sense of shared purpose among local business owners. Rather than competing for the same customers, businesses collaborate by cross-promoting products and encouraging shoppers to explore the variety of shops in town.

“Social media has been instrumental in helping promote and acknowledge small businesses involved in Shop the Town. It is also a great way to get the word out about the event, both locally and in surrounding areas. We did a collective giveaway with a couple business participants last year to encourage people to visit more than one shop and check out a new business they hadn’t been into before,” says Pam.

The benefits of small businesses working together extend far beyond the financial gains of a single event. By participating in initiatives like Shop the Town, local business owners create a sense of community pride, ensuring that dollars spent locally stay within the community.

When you shop at a small business, you’re not just supporting a store — you’re supporting a family, a community, and a way of life.

This not only helps individual businesses grow but also strengthens the overall local economy.

By working together, small businesses can increase their visibility, share customers, and grow a sense of

community that goes beyond transactions. When local businesses unite, they not only help each other thrive but also contribute to the longterm success and sustainability of their hometown. By supporting local businesses, residents ensure a brighter

future for their communities—one built on cooperation, creativity, and shared success.

Natural skincare from the heart of the ranch

66 Ranch Raised creates Two Sixes Tallow products that nourish and sustain

Leslie Gutzke is the creative force behind 66 Ranch Raised, and she brings a unique approach to skincare by using beef tallow from her ranch. Her smallbatch, handcrafted Two Sixes Tallow products come from her desire to create affordable, effective, and sustainable skincare that makes use of every part of the animal.

Leslie’s journey into skincare began with a deep connection to her ranching lifestyle. For years, she worked in direct sales, but something didn’t feel right. “I was always struggling to tie my ranch life into these products, and it never seemed to work,” she says. After stepping away from sales, she discovered the potential of tallow, a product often overlooked by ranchers and consumers.

According to Leslie, beef tallow is incredibly beneficial for the skin. “Tallow is the closest

ingredient you’ll find to the human skin’s chemical makeup,” she says. Unlike conventional skincare ingredients, tallow is easily absorbed by the skin due to its similarity to natural skin oils and fatty structures. It’s packed with essential vitamins like A, D, E, and K, making it nourishing while also locking in moisture without clogging pores. It also helps soothe the skin with its antiinflammatory properties, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a natural, effective skincare solution.

After months of trial and error, experimenting with textures and scents, Two Sixes Tallow was born. From soothing balms to nourishing creams, her tallow skincare range can be purchased online through her website and Etsy shop, as well as at several stores in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. “Raising cattle for food and beef byproducts isn’t just a trend—it’s my life’s work and passion. For myself, and many of my fellow ranchers in the ag industry, this is what we live and breathe. We live and love our work, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

You can also find Two Sixes in-store at the following locations:

• CollabARTive Studios Weyburn

• Western Prime Meat Processors Weyburn

• The General Store Estevan

• Circle Market + Cafe Invermere, BC

BUILDING A STANDOUT BRAND:

Branding is not just for major companies anymore. While Starbucks, WalMart and Nike are global brands, the same principles apply to branding for even the tiniest of ventures.

Building a strong brand identity is essential for small businesses looking to stand out in today’s modern marketplace. A well-crafted brand not only sets your business apart but also creates a lasting impression that can lead to customer loyalty and long-term success. For small businesses, it is particularly important to establish a brand that reflects your values, tells your story and means something to your customers.

Here’s how to build a powerful brand identity that will help your business thrive.

1. Purpose and mission

Your brand identity begins with a clear understanding of your business’s purpose. Ask yourself, “Why does my business exist?” This is more than just making a profit—it’s about what your business stands for and what it offers to your customers. Your mission should show the value you bring to the marketplace, whether it’s offering exceptional customer service, solving a unique problem, or delivering a better product.

success

A guide for small business

When customers understand your mission, they’re more likely to connect with your brand on a deeper level. Use this clarity to shape your brand messaging and ensure that it consistently reflects the purpose behind your business.

2. Target audience

A strong brand identity is built with your customers in mind. Who are they? What do they value? What problems do they face? Understanding your target audience allows you to craft messages and visuals that resonate with them. Consider their age, location, income level, and lifestyle when designing your brand. The more specific you can be, the better you can tailor your brand to meet their needs.

For example, if your target audience is environmentally conscious millennials, your brand might emphasize sustainability, eco-friendly products, and a modern, minimalist design. On the other hand, a brand targeting seniors may focus on reliability, tradition, and customer care. Knowing your audience is crucial to building a brand that speaks to them.

3. Visual identity

Your visual identity is the face of your brand and one of the first things people notice. Think about how good brands are instantly recognizable, and apply the same idea to your business. Your identity includes your logo, colour palette, typography, and overall design style. A memorable and consistent visual identity helps your business become distinct and identifiable—plus it builds trust with your audience.

Start with a logo that is simple, versatile, and reflective of your business’s values. Your logo should work in both large and small formats and across different mediums, from websites to business cards. Next, choose a colour palette that aligns with the emotions you want to people to feel about your business. For example, blue can convey trust and professionalism, while green might represent growth and sustainability.

Typography is another important element of your visual identity. Make sure the fonts you choose are easy to read and match the tone of your brand. Whether it’s a bold, modern font or a more traditional serif, your typography should enhance your overall brand message.

Also, be sure that any signage or merchandise that carries your logo is good quality. Ensure that wherever you place your brand, it’s something that represents your company well.

4. Voice

Your brand voice is how you communicate with your audience, both in writing and verbally. It should reflect the personality of your business and be consistent across all communication channels, whether it’s social media, website content, or email newsletters. Is your brand voice casual and friendly, or more formal and professional? Defining this early on ensures that your messaging feels cohesive.

A strong brand voice also helps build emotional connections with your customers. If you’re a small, local bakery, for instance, you might want a warm and inviting voice that feels like a conversation with a neighbor. On the other hand, a tech startup might opt for a more straightforward and cuttingedge tone.

5. Consistent and clear

Consistency is key to building a strong brand identity. Once you’ve established your visual elements and voice, make sure they are applied consistently across all customer touchpoints. This includes your website, social media profiles, packaging, signage and even the way your employees interact with customers.

When customers see the same logo, colours, and messaging across different platforms, it reinforces your brand in their minds. Consistency builds familiarity and trust, which are essential for customer loyalty. On the other hand, inconsistent branding can confuse customers and weaken your business’s identity.

6. Your story

Storytelling is a powerful way to humanize your brand and connect with your audience on an emotional level. Share your journey—how your business started, the challenges you’ve faced, and the values that drive you. This story will set you apart from competitors and give customers a reason to support your business.

Whether through a detailed “About Us” page on your website or through regular posts on social media, let customers in on your story. Authenticity goes a long way in building a loyal customer base.

It takes time, but it pays off

Building a strong brand identity takes time and effort, but it’s a crucial investment for your small business. Remember that Starbucks started out in 1971 as a coffee stall in Seattle…and look at it, and its brand today. Your small business might not reach the iconic level of Starbucks but as your business grows, so too will the power of your brand, leading to increased recognition, loyalty and success.

Meet Jody Holzmiller: Southeast College’s new Interim President & CEO

Jody Holzmiller’s journey from a young woman seeking change to Southeast College’s Interim President and CEO is one marked by resilience and vision. With nearly 20 years at the College, she is focused on continuing its success, supporting staff, and shaping the future with innovative programming and partnerships. Holzmiller’s leadership is driven by her belief in doing what you love and creating an environment where students and staff thrive.

At 25 years old Jody Holzmiller packed two suitcases and some boxes, left McCreary, Man. and headed for Weyburn, Sask. She did not know what to expect or how she would earn an income. All she knew was that she was at a point in her life when she needed something new and different. That is the scariest thing she has ever done on a personal level.

“I had not yet secured employment. I just packed up my car and everything I owned and moved from Manitoba. I stayed with my sister and her husband until I found work,” says Jody.

That was sometime in the early 1990s. The move would land Jody a job as Front Desk Receptionist/SCN Attendant at the Southeast Regional College. She did that job for three years.

After three years in Weyburn, Jody returned to Manitoba where she spent

thirteen years. Fate would bring Jody back to the “Opportunity City” and to the College where she once worked. On December 1, 2024, Jody will be starting her 20th year at Southeast College. She has held many positions including Vice President of Professional Training and Continuing Studies.

“I knew when I returned in 2005 to be the Executive Assistant to the President and Board of Governors that that was not where I wanted to stay, and I had conversations with the President and CEO to let him know that it was a stepping stone. My goal was to be the Vice President, Academic, but I did not ever have it in my mind that I would be the Interim CEO,” Jody adds.

On August 20, the board of Southeast College announced that Jody was the new Interim President and CEO of the College. Her immediate vision for the College is to focus on what the institute is doing well. Not only does Jody want to continue doing those things well but she also wants to improve on them.

“There’s always room for improvement. That is my first-year vision. If I were to stay after one year, my vision would be to diversify programming and to get new programs. I also want to ensure our staff feel supported, are healthy at work and that they do not feel that coming to work is a job.”

Elaborating on that point, the Interim President and CEO recounted what happened at a recent meeting.

“I sat in with the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructors in their two-day meetings. We were evaluating a potential classroom activity when one of the ABE Instructors was asked a question. The question was if you could give your kids or your younger self one piece of advice ...what would that be? His piece of advice was ‘do what you love’,” says Jody. She adds “because if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.”

When asked what are some of the things she is sad about at the College, Jody chuckled and pointed out that she tries not to be sad.

“If I did have to pick one thing it would be our lack of student extracurricular activities. That is something that I feel is missing from our college. That is one thing that I would like to someday see happen.”

And what is Jody happy about?

“I am so happy with the people we have at all our campuses. We have an amazing team and to see all the new faces and to hear them say this is a great place to work and it’s wonderful to be here – this is what makes me happy. This along with the students— for almost 20 years I have said the first day of school and graduation day are the best parts of my job. We play a critical role in educating our students and preparing them for the workforce as contributing members of our local towns, cities, and rural municipalities. To watch them grow and become comfortable within our walls through to their excitement as they walk across the stage – this is the most rewarding feeling to know our college has made it all possible.” says Jody.

As Interim President and CEO at the College, Jody plans to also focus on growing our new Centre of Sustainable Innovation, ensuring the corporate culture remains healthy, along with enhancing current partnerships and developing new initiatives with key stakeholders.

Keep the books BALANCED

Managing finances is a critical skill for entrepreneurs. From budgeting and cash flow management to securing loans and investments, learn how to keep your books balanced and your business thriving.

adjustments when necessary. McMahon emphasizes, “A budget is a living document— it should be flexible enough to adapt to changes but firm enough to provide financial discipline.”

Watch the incomings and outgoings. Cash flow is the lifeblood of any small business. Positive cash flow means more money is coming in than going out, which is crucial for covering daily operations. “Many businesses fail not because they’re not profitable, but because they mismanage their cash flow. If you can’t cover your bills today, it doesn’t matter how profitable you are on

Managing finances can be one of the most challenging aspects of running a small business. From maintaining a budget to managing cash flow and securing investments, keeping the books balanced requires discipline and strategic thinking. For small business owners, solid financial management is essential to ensuring the business stays afloat and grows. According to Nancy McMahon, owner of N. M. McMahon CPA Professional Corporation, “Good financial management is the difference between a thriving business and one that struggles to survive.”

You need a budget. A business budget is the cornerstone of effective financial management. It provides a clear view of expected income and expenses, ensuring that business owners don’t spend beyond their means. “The first thing any small business needs is a budget that reflects both the day-today running costs and the long-term financial goals,” says Nancy.

To start, list all revenue streams and divide your expenses into fixed (e.g., rent, utilities) and variable (e.g., marketing, supplies) costs. Once you have a clear picture of your finances, regularly track your spending and make

To maintain a healthy cash flow, track your receivables and payables regularly. Keep an eye on payment cycles and consider offering discounts for early payments to encourage customers to settle their invoices faster. Nancy also suggests keeping a cash reserve to cover unexpected expenses. “Cash flow problems are inevitable, especially in the early stages of a business. Having a buffer will keep you afloat during slower

It can be tempting for small business owners to mix personal and business finances, but this is a mistake. “You need a clear separation between your business and personal finances,” says Nancy. “It’s not just about avoiding tax headaches—keeping things separate helps you see the true financial

Set up a dedicated business bank account and use it for all business transactions. This separation makes it easier to track expenses, prepare taxes, and avoid personal financial risk if the business faces financial difficulties.

Be wise with loans and investments. Many small businesses will need extra funding at some point, whether to expand operations or cover unexpected costs. “Taking out a loan or seeking investors can be beneficial, but it’s important to do it wisely. Always have a clear plan for how you’ll use the funds and how you’ll repay them,” she says.

When applying for a loan, compare your options—look at interest rates,

repayment terms, and any fees. If you’re seeking investors, remember that they may want equity in return. “Be sure to weigh the pros and cons of giving up control versus gaining capital. Not every investment is a good fit for your business’s long-term goals.”

Plan for taxes. Taxes can catch small business owners off guard, especially if they haven’t set aside funds throughout the year. “A big part of financial management is making sure you’re prepared for taxes,” Nancy says. “Regularly set aside a portion of your income to cover them, and stay on top of any deadlines.”

Working with an accountant can be invaluable when it comes to tax planning. A professional can help you navigate tax regulations and maximize deductions, ensuring that your business stays compliant and takes advantage of any

available tax breaks. “The last thing you want is to be surprised by a tax bill you can’t pay,” she says.

Get help. Modern financial tools can simplify bookkeeping and ensure your records are accurate. Accounting software like QuickBooks or Sage can help track expenses, generate invoices and run reports. “Small business owners often wear many hats, but investing in the right financial tools can save time and prevent costly mistakes,” says Nancy. Hiring a bookkeeper or accountant can also be a wise decision. It’s an investment that pays for itself in peace of mind and accurate financials.

Financial management is essential for any entrepreneur who wants to build a sustainable business. “Successful businesses don’t just manage money— they make their money work for them,” says Nancy. By creating a budget,

managing cash flow, keeping finances separate, and making smart decisions about loans and investments, small business owners can ensure long-term financial health and success.

Built before 1990? Test for asbestos.

Asbestos exposure is the number one cause of work-related deaths in Saskatchewan.

Asbestos was commonly used in homes built before 1990. More than 3,000 building materials and other products contain asbestos, such as vinyl floor tiles, window putty and duct coverings. When tiny asbestos fibres are airborne, they can get into the lungs and cause severe damage over many years.

A LOCAL FINANCIAL POWERHOUSE

Two trusted financial teams merge to bring personalized, independent advice to the Weyburn community. With a century of local experience and a commitment to serving clients at every stage of life, Weyburn Security and Harbourfront Wealth Management – Weyburn, have come together to help you achieve your financial goals.

Weyburn Security, a name well-known in Weyburn for almost 100 years, has joined forces with Harbourfront Wealth Management – Weyburn, bringing two long-time investment and advisory teams together

under one roof. Officially merging on September 3 as Weyburn Security – Peak Investments, this partnership strengthens their ability to provide outstanding service to clients and the local community.

The merger began taking shape over a year ago when Weyburn Security’s Jim and Mike Onstad and Harbourfront Wealth Management – Weyburn’s Chris Michel, Michael Hoffman and Adrian Miller started discussing the potential of working together. As the conversations evolved, the teams realized they shared similar values, principles, and a vision for serving their clients’ best interests. “We quickly realized we could do more together than apart,” says Mike Onstad, Assistant Manager and Certified Financial Planner at the newly combined firm. “It just made sense for us and for our clients.”

Chris, Michael and Adrian agree. “Our decision to merge with Weyburn Security was made after a thoughtful and in-depth process that considered a multitude of factors. We truly believe that we are joining forces with another quality like minded local firm whose philosophical alignment and core business values matches our own— independent and unbiased,” says Chris. “Our primary business driver has always been focused on taking care of all our clients’ financial needs, and by uniting with another strong, established and locally owned firm such as Weyburn Security - Peak Investments, we will continue to do that.”

“Weyburn is a thriving community. It’s a great place to raise our families and grow our businesses. With our independent and unbiased approach to investing and financial planning, we feel that now is

L-R Michael Hoffman, Adrian Miller, Jim Onstad, Chris Michel, Mike Onstad

the right time to grow and expand here in Weyburn,” says Michael. “We are very excited to partner with another firm who have the same feelings about Weyburn and who have similar values. While other firms don’t see the value of having a presence in Weyburn anymore, with this merger we have doubled the size of our staff, and we are very excited about the future growth opportunities here under the Weyburn Security banner.”

DEDICATED TO CLIENT SUCCESS

Now, six experienced advisors work together in the newly renovated office, continuing their long tradition of independent financial advice that puts clients first. The merger still allows the firm to offer a wide array of products and services without compromising the personalized, professional advice they’ve always been known for.

“We are an independent brokerage, which means we’re not tied to any specific products or companies,” says Mike Onstad. “We’re free to offer what’s best for our clients, no matter where they are in their financial journey.”

Whether you’re just starting to invest, nearing retirement, or somewhere in between, the advisors at Weyburn Security – Peak Investments are ready to help. They believe financial success is within everyone’s reach, and their team is committed to guiding you every step of the way.

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

One of the key aspects that makes this merger special is the firm’s deep roots in the Weyburn community. “We’ve been here for almost 100 years as Weyburn Security, and we’re not going anywhere,” says Mike. “While other firms have

closed their doors or consolidated their offices elsewhere, we’re still right here, serving our clients and our community.”

Locally owned and operated, the team is proud to remain independent, clientdriven, and committed to helping people in Weyburn and beyond achieve their financial goals. “It’s important for us to stay local, to be accessible, and to be part of the community we’ve been serving for so long,” says Mike. “Plus, we have all the technology to handle your business wherever you happen to be. Online, by phone or in-person, we can help you manage your financial life.”

For personalized financial advice from a team that puts your interests first, visit the newly renovated Weyburn Security office today. Call or stop by for a consultation and take the first step toward your financial future.

Small town,

BIG DREAMS

Meet two of the Southeast’s achievers

Jaclyn Kot

Jaclyn Kot’s debut novel, Between Life and Death Book 1, sparked a sensation on TikTok in March 2023. She’s since released two more books in the dark fantasy romance series, with the first book hitting Amazon’s Top 100 multi-category bestseller list. The audiobook rights were acquired by Podium Entertainment, and the series earned a “Best of BookTok” banner from Amazon. At its peak, the series ranked within the top 400 on Amazon. Jaclyn plans one more book in the series and is already working on ideas for spinoff novels.

Living in Saskatchewan provides endless inspiration for Jaclyn. “Saskatchewan is so incredibly beautiful. It’s the wind whispering through the tall grass, the ever-changing skies, the blistering hot summers, and wickedly cold winters,” she says. “It gives me so much inspiration and I think that really translates through to my stories.”

Jaclyn lives on a farm near Weyburn with her husband, chickens, cats, and dog. She loves the sense of community in Weyburn. “I enjoy how close of a community it is, and how kind Weyburn people are. How if you stop at a stop sign, you’re going to get into a ‘waving match’ with the other person about who should go first. You just don’t get that same experience in bigger cities and I think it’s something to be proud of.”

Marnell Spencer

At 61, Marnell Spencer is a world-record-holding powerlifter, proving that age is just a number. Representing Team Canada, she set two world records at the North American Powerlifting Championship in April, adding to her 12 North American, three Commonwealth, and five National records. Despite her petite frame, she’s excelled in the sport with coach Ryan Fowler at Olympia In Depth in Weyburn.

Marnell describes setting the records as surreal. “It’s a huge honour to represent Team Canada,” she says. “The memories made are unforgettable, and I think the photo of me achieving the world record squat says it all—like they say, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’.”

Powerlifting might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Saskatchewan, but for Marnell it offers a rare combination of community support, friendship, and top-tier resources, including a world-class coach and a specialized gym space for powerlifting. “Weyburn is a wonderful, safe place to raise a family, and it has everything I need to support my powerlifting journey,” Marnell says.

WEYBURN GOLDWINGS

Revitalizing U18 Girls Hockey

Four years ago, Chandy Kaip was approached to reenergize the Weyburn Goldwings U18 AAA girls hockey team. Despite joining mid-season, Chandy has made significant strides in transforming the program.

Now in her fourth season, she’s coaching a team entirely of her own recruits, and the Goldwings are making waves across the league.

“The program feels rejuvenated, and we’re winning a lot of games,” Chandy says. “Our first-ever sweep in a long time is a wonderful memory for me.” This season, the Goldwings have been outplaying their toughest competitors and have set their sights on reaching the second round of playoffs, a goal that has eluded them in recent years.

Teamwork is at the heart of Chandy’s coaching philosophy. She kicks off each season with two days of team-building activities at Buffalo Pound Lake, focusing on both individual and team goal setting. “The players created their own mission statement,

which has brought a breath of fresh air to the team and the program,” says Chandy. “We have become a connected ‘family’ and created a positive environment for our players to grow as athletes and people.”

Beyond the game, Chandy sees hockey as a way to instill valuable life skills in her players. “Hockey teaches teamwork, conflict resolution, and helps the girls become well-rounded and self-confident individuals,” she says. Many players are setting their sights on elite university-level hockey and even professional careers in leagues like the PWHL.

Reflecting on her time with the Goldwings, Chandy shares her enthusiasm for the future. “This has been a great experience for me, and I can’t wait to see the team grow even more. They are one of the hardest-working team in our league, and I am so proud to lead them.”

With Chandy’s leadership and strong assistant coaches, the Weyburn Goldwings are poised for continued success.

BECOMING THE BEATLES

20 LIVE SONGS, OVER 300 PROJECTED IMAGES AND ONE UNFORGETTABLE STORY

Becoming the Beatles is a captivating live musical documentary, blending over 300 projections, 20 live songs, and intimate stories to unveil the journey of the legendary band. Led by musician and storyteller Haley Marie, the show delves into the Beatles’ rise to fame, their musical evolution, and the personal struggles of each member.

This theatrical event weaves together over 300 stunning projections, 20 live songs and fascinating behindthe-scenes stories. Yale-educated musician/storyteller Haley Marie orchestrates these elements as she guides you through the history-making events and heartbreaking moments of the Beatles.

With years of research and musical analysis at her fingertips, Haley Marie delivers a world-class

performance about four lads, how they rose to incredible fame, their connection to classical music and how they changed the world forever.

Becoming the Beatles is definitely not a tribute act. It’s a show about four boys: one born during an air raid, one who had to reverse the strings on his guitar to make sense of it, one who stayed up late practicing with tears in his eyes and another who couldn’t read or write until he was eight. It’s also the story of a visionary young producer who was desperate to find his way out of the ‘comedy division’ at Parlophone records.

Haley Marie’s in-depth analysis reveals the re-awakening of a world devastated by war, the genius of oppressed musicians in the Deep South, the unexpected inspiration from the

classical greats and the heartbreak from the death of the band’s biggest idol.

Hear first-hand how the band used flour and water to fasten their logo to the side of their van en route to Germany. How that same band was turned down by 80 per cent of the English recording market yet defied the odds to become the most successful musical group in history.

Reclaiming your health

Simple daily practices to feel better

In today’s fast-paced world, an alarming number of people report feeling unwell without clear explanations. Many individuals experience unexplained aches and pains, digestive troubles, elevated blood pressure and cholesterol, persistent fatigue, and an array of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and brain fog. These concerns can be overwhelming, leaving many wondering how to reclaim their vitality.

One major factor contributing to these widespread health issues is the pervasive presence of toxins in our environment— found in our air, water, food, and even personal care products. While we may not have control over all these toxins, there are several daily practices we can adopt to significantly enhance our well-being.

HYDRATION MATTERS

Water quality and quantity are crucial for our health. Many people are unknowingly dehydrated, which can lead to various health issues. Drinking filtered, remineralized water can help restore hydration levels and flush out toxins. Aim to consume adequate amounts of water throughout the day, as even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and decreased cognitive function.

CUT OUT PROCESSED SUGARS

Processed sugars and artificial sweeteners are prevalent in many diets and can wreak havoc on our health. These ingredients contribute to the overgrowth of candida, a type of yeast that can lead to a host of health problems. Reducing sugar intake can help rebalance the body’s microbiome and improve overall health. Focus on whole, natural foods to nourish your body and support a healthier lifestyle.

EMBRACE WHOLE FOODS

Incorporating a variety of whole foods into your diet is essential for optimal health. If daily variety feels overwhelming, consider adding a greens powder and healthy fats to a quick smoothie. This approach not only boosts nutrient intake but can also be a convenient way to fuel your body with essential vitamins and minerals. Weyburn’s Old Fashion Foods smoothie shop offers delicious options that can make healthy eating easy and enjoyable.

PRIORITIZE REST AND RELAXATION

In our fast-paced society, rest often takes a backseat to our busy lives. However, rest is essential for healing and rejuvenation. Make it a priority to carve out time for relaxation, whether through meditation, reading, or simply enjoying quiet moments. This time away from the distractions of work, social media, and daily stressors is crucial for mental and physical recovery.

MOVE YOUR BODY

Regular movement is fundamental to our health. Our bodies were designed to be active, and even small amounts of movement can have significant benefits. Simple activities, such as taking a walk after dinner or doing light stretches before bed, can enhance circulation and support the body’s natural detoxification processes. Aim to integrate movement into your daily routine to help combat the physical and mental effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

ESTABLISH A SUPPLEMENT ROUTINE

A consistent supplement regimen can also play a vital role in improving overall health. Consider incorporating essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin D, vitamin C, and magnesium, as well as greens powder and healthy fats. These supplements can help bridge nutritional gaps in your diet and support your body’s functions.

While we may be surrounded by environmental toxins and face numerous health challenges, adopting simple daily practices can lead to significant improvements in how we feel. By focusing on hydration, reducing processed sugars, eating whole foods, moving regularly, prioritizing rest, and maintaining a consistent supplement routine, we can reclaim our health. These small steps can pave the way for a healthier, more vibrant life, allowing us to thrive in an increasingly toxic world.

“Working in this industry changed my life,” she says. “It lit a fire inside of me to help others who feel confused, unheard, or unsure of what to do about their symptoms. That’s what Old Fashion Foods is all about—helping people feel better, no matter where they are on their health journey.”

What truly sets Old Fashion Foods apart from other stores is the knowledgeable staff. “Our team is here to listen,” Stefanie says. “Our staff has many years of experience and we even have a trained digestion specialist on hand. It’s comforting for our customers to come in and talk to someone about their health concerns instead of relying on a website. We make sure they get the right product for their needs.”

The store prides itself on offering a wide range of products and services that promote health and wellness. From supplements and specialty diet foods to natural cleaning products and face and body care items, Old Fashion Foods has something for everyone. They even carry immune boosters and cold and flu fighters for the colder months ahead, as well as grounding mats, which Stefanie says can help with anxiety and restlessness. “We even have supplements for pets now!” she says.

A key focus of the store is providing locally made products, and Stefanie is passionate about supporting the community. “We want to be a onestop shop for health,” she says. “We’re bringing in grass-fed, antibiotic-free and added hormone-free meat, eggs, and more local produce. Plus, we have a local gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free baker who delivers fresh goods twice a week.”

One of the most exciting changes coming to Old Fashion Foods is the addition of a smoothie bar, which will soon open upstairs. Plus. Stefanie envisions Old Fashion Foods becoming a full-fledged wellness centre. “We have treatment rooms available for rent, and we’re looking to bring in wellness professionals like naturopaths, reflexologists, and nutritionists,” she says. “Right now, we already have Carly Du from Zuddhi Wellness offering Guashua and Aroma Touch treatments.”

Stefanie’s goal is simple: to make Old Fashion Foods a place where people

feel safe, heard, and helped. “It can be overwhelming when you’re faced with a new diagnosis like celiac disease, or when you find out you can’t eat dairy or sugar anymore. We’re here to help people focus on what they can enjoy and not feel so lost.”

As the store continues to grow and evolve, Stefanie is excited for what’s to come. “I truly think our store is something to remember. I want people from all over to hear about us, to bring their family and friends, and to experience this cool little wellness center right here in Weyburn,” she says. With new products, services, and a commitment to the community, Old Fashion Foods is poised to be a cornerstone of health and wellness in the area for years to come.

TAX ADVICE

SMART TAX STRATEGIES FOR MODERN FARMERS

Planning today for a strong financial future

Modern farming is a sophisticated business these days, with most operations far removed from the traditional family farm combined both home and livelihood. Farms often operate as corporations, consolidating land, equipment, crops, and livestock under a single business entity. The motivation behind this shift is simple: deferring taxes to improve cash flow and reduce tax liabilities.

In Canada, preferred shares are securities issued by corporations to defer taxes when transitioning the traditional proprietorship or partnership farm to a corporate entity. They are “preferred” because these shares have preferential treatment over common shareholders in certain circumstances.

Many corporations transfer assets from their personal farm to their corporate farm by issuing preferred shares to defer taxes. However, while this strategy offers significant benefits, it requires careful long-term planning to avoid substantial tax bills when it’s time to sell the farm or in the event of the death of the shareholder. The key is to redeem shares gradually, taking advantage of tax savings in the present while also ensuring future financial stability.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen farming operations caught off guard by massive tax obligations, leaving them unprepared to handle these financial burdens. The solution lies in early and proactive planning. Younger farmers, with decades ahead of them, are in a better position to redeem shares over time compared to those nearing retirement. Consulting a seasoned tax professional early on can help prevent unexpected challenges in the future.

Modern agriculture demands strategic planning. By taking proactive measures now, farmers can protect their financial future, ensuring their hard-earned assets are safeguarded and their businesses remain strong for years to come.

Growing with nature

AG-Activ’s carbon-based fertilizers enhance yields and support the environment

Weyburn’s AG-Activ, cofounded by Andries Van der Meulen, specializes in sustainable, high-quality carbon-based fertilizers that improve crop yield and quality while minimizing environmental impact. Andries, who has spent years working closely with farmers, understands that every growing season comes with its own set of challenges. “The fun about farming is that we learn something new or face new challenges with each season. Every season is unique,” he says.

Part of AG-Activ’s overall philosophy is focused on strategic crop planning. Andries encourages farmers to look beyond short-term results and plan with a long-term perspective. “Don’t plan for a 30-to-40-bushel wheat yield because that’s what you got last season. Instead, work with a five-year average,” he says.

Andries Van der Meulen

By using yield data, crop varieties, and disease pressure from previous seasons, farmers can make better decisions for the next year. Crop rotation is another essential tool in AG-Activ’s approach, as it helps prevent soil depletion, pest problems, and disease.

Soil samples also play an important role in AG-Activ’s process, providing data to determine the best crops and fertility levels for the coming season.

“Conducting soil samples helps you make better decisions,” says Andries. By comparing current samples with previous years’ data, farmers can detect emerging soil health issues and address them before they become significant problems. One of the key factors to monitor is soil

pH, which directly affects nutrient availability. Andries says that ideal pH levels should be between 6.3 and 7.3. Deviations from this range—often due to high calcium, magnesium or sodium levels—can cause nutrient imbalances and negatively impact crop growth.

AG-Activ’s products are designed to address these soil health challenges, with a range of carbon-based fertilizers that enhance soil quality and nutrient availability. One of their standout products is a chelated calcium solution, which provides a concentrated form of plant-available calcium that is more easily absorbed by crops. “Our calcium solution is a concentrated form of plant-available calcium, and only small

Carbon is essential for healthy, productive soil, improving crop yields, water storage, and protection against erosion and pH fluctuations. It enhances soil structure, improves microbial activity, and increases nutrient availability, which supports plant growth. However, soil carbon is easily lost, making it important to maintain for long-term soil health and sustainability.

quantities are needed to feed the plant,” says Andries. This ensures that farmers can address common issues like high pH and compaction without excessive product use—which improves efficiency and sustainability.

Beyond field crops, AG-Activ extends its expertise to lawn care and indoor gardening. Fall is a critical time for lawn care, and Andries notes that fertilizing lawns is important at this time of year. “Fall fertilizer boosts root growth and improves winter hardiness, leading to a better green-up in spring,” he says. In addition to fertilization, AG-Activ recommends overseeding and weed control to promote a healthy lawn throughout the year. For homeowners, using humic and fulvic acids alongside fertilizers can further enhance soil structure and plant health.

AG-Activ’s commitment to sustainability and innovation ensures that farmers, gardeners, and homeowners can achieve better results while supporting the environment. Learn more about what AG-Activ can do for you at AG-Activ.com.

The overlooked keys to successful decorating

Uncover vital elements for creating spaces that harmonize function and aesthetic appeal, enhancing your home’s decor through spatial balance, multifunctional pieces, and personalized accents.

In the world of interior design, many decorators lean heavily on well-known principles like the rule of thirds, current color trends, and popular HGTV tips. However, creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing requires a deeper understanding of design. Here, I’ll share essential yet often overlooked keys that can transform any space into a harmonious blend of beauty and utility. A few of these key items are not actually taught in design school and are based on my opinion and experience in design –now let’s dig in!

SPATIAL BALANCE

Achieving spatial balance is one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of design. It involves distributing visual weight across a space, ensuring that no single area feels too heavy or overcrowded. Balance can be symmetrical, with elements mirrored on either side, or asymmetrical, where varying items create a sense of harmony through contrast. This thoughtful arrangement not only enhances the

overall look of a room but also creates a sense of calm and order, making spaces feel more inviting.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL ITEMS

Many homeowners overlook the potential of functional items to serve dual purposes in decor. Instead of cluttering a space with additional decorative pieces, consider the beauty of everyday items. Fresh towels and rugs can elevate a bathroom’s aesthetic, while

stylish kitchen tools, like a knife block or a chic pepper grinder, can add character without sacrificing utility. In living spaces, swapping out old blankets for new, decorative ones displayed in a wicker basket can create an inviting atmosphere.

By choosing functional items that are also visually appealing, you can enhance your home’s decor without compromising on practicality. I do this a lot with furniture as well as design elements within a space such as focal points. For example, at Weyburn Security, I used a feature wall as a focal point and a branding element. In homes, I have utilized firm ottomans as foot rests that can also double as a coffee table if you add a tray, and as an additional seat during family events.

CREATING A FOCAL POINT

When entering a room, your eyes should naturally gravitate toward the focal point, creating a more engaging and organized space. A well-defined focal point can dramatically improve the flow of a room. It draws the eye and provides a sense of direction, ensuring that the space feels cohesive. Options for focal points include:

• Feature Walls: A bold paint color or patterned wallpaper can serve as an eye-catching backdrop. I do a lot of MDF feature walls. This is more cost effective then wallpaper or wall coverings and more dramatic than just paint.

• Fireplaces: These can act as natural gathering spots and conversation starters. They add physical and emotional warmth to a space.

• Custom range hoods: In kitchens, a uniquely designed hood can become a stunning centerpiece.

• Artwork or furniture layout: Strategically placing large pieces of art or unique furniture can direct attention and create interest.

IMPLEMENTING SENTIMENT

In today’s digital age, we often forget to display our cherished memories and traditions. Incorporating sentimental items, like family photographs or heirlooms, can infuse your space with personality. Rather than letting these treasures collect dust in a box or get lost in the cloud, display them in thoughtful ways that blend with modern design. This personal touch not only enhances the aesthetic but also tells a story, making your home uniquely yours.

A TOUCH OF NATURE

Integrating natural elements is vital for creating a healthy living environment. Since we spend about ninety percent of our time indoors, bringing in greenery— whether through live plants, which can improve air quality, or high-quality faux

alternatives, that provide the perceived sense of biophilic design - all of which can improve a sense of mental and physical well-being. Consider placing plants in stylish pots or using natural materials like wood and stone in your decor to create a more organic feel.

BEAUTIFUL ORGANIZATION

One of my key recommendations for clients is to focus on “beautiful organization.” Storage solutions should not only be functional but also visually pleasing. By ensuring that everyday items are easily accessible and stored beautifully, you enhance the overall aesthetic of your space. After all, a well-organized home is not just practical. It is also an essential component of a beautiful and harmonious living environment.

Incorporating these often-overlooked keys into your decorating projects can lead to spaces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply functional and personal. By moving beyond basic trends and embracing these principles, you can create a home that truly reflects your style and needs.
