T
his magical time of year all starts with the first snowfall when white snowflakes cover the ground. Everything feels calm and clean - it’s a fresh start for the new season. Then comes the fun when a snowman gets built. If there is enough snow, it's a fort. Of course, you must warm up with a mug of hot chocolate. It's also the perfect time to put on some Christmas music and make a batch of gingerbread cookies. I love everything about the holiday season being with family and friends, baking, Christmas books and movies. Yes, please!

Our cover features Southeast College’s new CEO, Dr. Vicky Roy. She is thrilled to make Weyburn her new home. Vicky is working on a new strategic vision for the college. We can’t wait to see her plan put to action over the course of the next five years. Welcome to Weyburn, Vicky! We hope you enjoy your new community as much as we do. Make sure you check out our shop local section along with our Refined Holiday Gift Guide. See what your local businesses have to offer this Christmas. The holiday season is a happy time of year, but it can be overwhelming, sad or depressing for some. Our editorial feature, Shining a Light, talks about what our police service and the Weyburn chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association are doing for the community. You'll also find resources for mental health services in the handy QR code found on page 49, and tips on how to make the holiday season less stressful and more fun. As always, I want to thank our clients and readers. Without your support I wouldn’t be moving into my eighth year in business! I’m so grateful for your support and readership over the years and look forward to many more.

Everything you need right here Why you should use local contractors Building new or renovating a space can be a daunting challenge. Deciding what you want, calculating your budget and finding people to do the work is not an easy task. Luckily, there are many talented contractors and tradespeople right here and they can guide you through the process.
20
R eFined WEYBURN & AREA
AT HOME
Here are five great reasons to use local businesses to get your contracting work done. 1. Local people know the community they work in. They often have “insider knowledge” about everything from permits to soil, to suppliers and trades. Estimates can be faster, and often more flexible. Plus, a local business will be around after the job is done for any follow-ups or perhaps another project! 2. There’s no mileage. Hiring a contractor from another community can often mean paying for their commute to your project. It can also mean slower service if you have issues with a warranty once the work is done. 3. Reviews and recommendations are easy to find. Word-of-mouth is still one of the best ways to find a contractor. Plus, reputable local contractors will be responsive, have real reviews and can provide references that you will likely know. 4. Hiring a local contractor means you are putting your money back into your hometown. We all know small businesses are the economic foundation of the community. Supporting local contractors helps them contribute to our region’s economic growth. 5. Quality counts. Local contractors know that word can get around if their work is not up to standard. They care about maintaining their reputation because it’s their livelihood and their name on the line. Small businesses often go above and beyond to ensure the job is done right. So, when you’re in the market for a contractor or tradesperson for your home or business, think local and hire the people who call your community home. It makes a difference that matters, and you get the benefit of quality workmanship from someone that you know.

DID YOU KNOW? Once your will is prepared, you should review it every five years or after a major life change, such as marriage, having children, divorce, or significant changes in assets.
Steve Schuck
Well-prepared for the future Schuck Law Firm can get your will in order easily By Brook Thalgott Photos Big Dog Photography
E
veryone needs a will, whether you are preparing for a major milestone or not. Many of us have not taken the time to make a will, or if you already have one, to have it reviewed on a regular basis. Schuck Law Firm can help you get your wishes documented correctly and stored safely for the future. Steve Schuck and the team at Schuck Law Firm know how important a will is and will make the process of making one quick and easy. “Preparing a will doesn’t have to be stressful or time-consuming,” says Steve. “However, passing away without one is the opposite for your loved ones. It’s a simple document that will give your family peace of mind.”
There is no time like the present to make a will. It doesn’t matter if you’re single or married, young or old, with kids or not. A will sets out what you want to happen to your assets, outlines what you want to happen to sentimental items or heirlooms, and most importantly, defines how dependent family members will be cared for. When getting started with your will, consider what you have for others to inherit and who you would like to include. Also, think about who the executor of your estate should be. “When picking the person or people to manage your estate, make sure you choose someone who can handle
AT HOME
the job,” says Steve. “They should be trustworthy, able to make good decisions on your behalf, and will act fairly when dealing with your beneficiaries.” A will can ensure your assets go where you want them to. Family relationships can be complicated, and a well-planned will can protect your estate from issues when you’re gone. “For example, a new relationship or second marriage that includes children may complicate the transfer of assets without a will. No matter what your situation, a will should be clear about who you want to inherit your property,” says Steve. “The same is true for your Power of Attorney and Health Care Directives. Take the time now to make your wishes known and store them securely at our office.” Making a will usually takes one appointment, online or in-person, and then a review of the prepared document and your signature a few days later at Schuck Law Firm. Once it’s complete, you can file your will securely at Schuck Law Firm for free, so that it’s protected and available to access when needed. Steve and the legal team at Schuck Law Firm are ready to handle your will and estate planning needs for your peace of mind. s we settle into fall and see winter (and the holidays) around the corner, it’s also time to think about how fortunate we are. Saskatchewan does not have the beautiful beaches of Mexico or Hawaii, the mountains of British Columbia, the amusement parks of California or the sports of Toronto or Montreal. However, it has something that might be even more special. We’re surrounded by much of the food the world needs and wants. It’s
literally grown by our friends, family and neighbours—and perhaps, you. You can head out of the city in any direction and within minutes, you’re in the centre of food growing for people around the world. It’s a labour-intensive job that is dependent on the whims of weather, tastes, and more. And yet, it’s the thing that provides the “fuel” for all of us to live.

This holiday season when you’re tucking into a table filled with food, take a moment to think about the people who made sure it was there for you and the ones you love.

EXPERT ADVICE
EXPERT ADVICE
BUILDING HEALTHY DENTAL HABITS WITH YOUR PET Brushing is Best Starting when our pets are young is the easiest way to be successful, but it is never too late. Some easy tips to follow: 1. Make it positive by using tasty treats and keeping it short. 2. Only use pet toothpaste; human toothpaste is not safe for pets. 3. Focus on the outer tooth surfaces, brushing on the inner surfaces is frustrating for the pet and difficult for you. 4. Brush daily but at a minimum every other day to prevent plaque from hardening into tartar. 5. Oral wipes are a good alternative to brushing.
Dental Diets are the next best option Life is busy and brushing isn’t always possible. I love using diets that benefit our pet’s health with no extra effort from us, the pet owner. Dental diets use mechanical action (like a toothbrush) by using a larger more textured kibble. This helps to scrap the plaque off the chewing teeth. Diets like Royal Canin Dental Diet also have a special coating on the kibble (the toothpaste) that help prevent plaque on non-chewing teeth from hardening into tartar. These diets are lower in calorie and have more fibre making them the perfect choice for small breed dogs.
32
R eFined WEYBURN & AREA
Dental Treats Dental treats can encourage our pets to chew and have special ingredient additives that help reduce plaque, tartar, gingivitis and bacteria while freshening breath. Buyer beware though as not all treats have been proven to produce the results the packaging claims. Pet owners can trust their dental treats when they have a VOHC seal of approval. VOHC stands for Veterinary Oral Health Council and when they endorse a product it has gone through testing to prove it does what it claims.
Dental Cleanings Once plaque has hardened into tartar it is very difficult to remove by brushing, dental diets or treats. When a pet has a moderate amount of tartar, typically referred to as Grade 2 dental disease they would benefit from a dental cleaning. A proper cleaning can only be done under anesthesia. Anesthesia often frightens most pet owners and the concern for their pet’s safety can cause them to delay these procedures. Protecting your pet’s health and safety is the primary concern of your veterinarian as well. Veterinarians monitor your pet’s anesthesia using monitors similar to human health and keep up-to-date on the latest anesthesia protocols to ensure they remain safe during their procedure. Delays in addressing dental disease at earlier stages only allows the dental disease to progress to irreversible damages causing tooth loss, bone damage and infection. Many pet insurance policies include annual dental cleanings and cover dental expenses like

ome of the most common questions we get from farmers are about AgriStability and AgriInvest. We can ensure that Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) get the information they need and take the headache out of your hands. Whether you use one or both programs, we can provide the accurate data so that you can receive the payments you’re entitled to.
WHAT IS AGRISTABILITY? It’s insurance offered by Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) for producers to offset losses due to factors such as weather, increased costs and market conditions. The producer is required to enroll and pay enrollment fees every year to stay in AgriStability. Your financial statements and tax return for the year are sent to SCIC along with other information such as number of bushels/tonnes in the bin by type of crop; number of head by types of cattle in the field; number of seeded acres by crop type; deferred grain sales; unpaid bills and more to calculate the producer’s program and reference margins. A payment is made by SCIC to the producer if their program margin falls below 70 per cent of their reference margin. WHAT IS AGRIINVEST?

(AAFC). AgriInvest will notify producers how much to contribute to their AgriInvest account. AAFC will deposit the matching contribution once the producer makes their annual contribution. Your required statement of income and expenses is sent to SCIC; in turn SCIC forwards the financial information to AAFC. AAFC will advise you on the maximum contribution the government will match. The limit on matching government contributions is $10,000 per year based on annual Allowable Net Sales of the producer, with required minimum sales of $25,000 to qualify for the matching government contribution. Jeff Tosczak retired in 2019, thinking his days selling cars and trucks were behind him. “I retired after many years as a Ford dealer,” says Jeff. “Between my dad Allan Tosczak and myself, we owned the local dealership and served Weyburn and surrounding communities for over 40 years from 1978 to 2019.” He enjoyed the first year of retirement until covid came along and turned the world upside down. Jeff realised that he needed to be back involved with people and the community. “I was getting bored and the chance to own a new dealership

Jeff is thrilled to be the city’s NEW Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealer, and paired once again with James Bell, the dealership’s new general manager. “James and I worked together before, and I am so happy to have him back once again,” says Jeff. Endeavour Metalworks is Weyburn’s fabricating shop By Brook Thalgott
T
anner Meaden got his start in metal fabricating in the oil fields of southeast Saskatchewan, making repairs and building tanks to make his work easier. “I was running heavy equipment in the oil patch, and fabricating and welding when I needed to,” says Tanner. “From there, I made my own custom tanks for my truck and people I worked with noticed.” Notice they did. Seeing Tanner’s custom tank made other oilfield workers want one of their own, and slowly, a business was born. As Tanner’s work for colleagues and

friends grew, he and fiancé April MacMillan saw the opportunity for a new venture forming. In 2021, they launched Endeavour Metalworks, becoming a full-time metal fabrication shop for Weyburn and the southeast. Today, Tanner and his dad Terry handle metal fabricating work of all kinds. “My dad helps with the paperwork and customer service, and I fabricate,” says Tanner. “It’s been great to see how the business has grown over the last year.” Tanner works with many major companies and organizations in the southeast, managing fabricating projects from the oilfield, the city, the agriculture sector and more.

New in town
Southeast College welcomes Dr. Vicky Roy By Brook Thalgott Photos Big Dog Photography
Southeast College has found its new CEO and she is thrilled to make Weyburn, and Saskatchewan, home. Dr. Vicky Roy officially joined the college on August 15, after a months-long search for the role that is so vital to the community.
faculty member at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Red Deer Polytechnic, and adjunct faculty at University of Calgary, University of Laval and Sherbrooke University. She also held several management roles at the B.C. Institute of Technology, Lasalle College and the International Academy of Design & Technology. She earned her PhD in educational technologies and Master of Business Administration from the University of Sherbrooke.
“My background is in business, much of it spent in marketing, advertising and public relations,” she says. “I developed an interest in and love for entrepreneurship and fostered it in many of my previous roles.” It was that love for business that led her to explore the role at Southeast College. “Saskatchewan has such an entrepreneurial culture and attitude, and I want to take that to the next level at the college and within the community.”
B
orn and raised in Quebec, Vicky is a francophone and laughs at how much attention her accent gets around town. “I am pretty distinctive when I start talking, but it’s also been the way I have engaged with so many people since I arrived,” says Roy. “It’s been a great conversation starter.” Dr. Roy arrived at Southeast College from Medicine Hat College, where she was vice-president of academic and provost. She has spent more than 17 years in the post-secondary world, in schools across the country. She was a business

Vicky is now working on the new strategic vision for Southeast College, and how it will evolve over the next five years. There is plenty of work to do as she and her team engage with the communities they serve, students, and industry. “The college is an integral part of southeast Saskatchewan and has many roles to play,” she says. “We have a lot to work on in terms of how we can best serve our region and meet the goals and needs of everyone we teach and work with.” Among the many priorities are strategies around both Indigenous and international students. “We have an important part to play in Indigenous engagement, and providing opportunities for Indigenous learners,” she says. As well, the college is looking at how it can offer education to international students, and what that will offer the community. “Our region is becoming more diverse all the time, and international student programming can foster new opportunities for not only students, but industry and business too.”

A microcredential is a short, focused workshop that earns one badge of the four needed to earn a Professional Microcredential. This targeted learning allows students to specialize in a narrow range of competencies, to complement experience or education and add to your resume. In short, they improve employability, verify an existing skillset, and increase proficiency for current or future roles. Microcredentials for Business Southeast College’s Microcredentials for Business will help improve your management and leadership acumen through practical, skill-oriented business courses. Training is provided through live online classes facilitated by leading edge instructors who will challenge and build core business, leadership, and management skills. You can register for one class, or the full microcredential. Learn skills in communication for business and office management at your own pace, from your own home or office. Microcredentials for Municipal Managers If you’re in municipal management, Southeast College offers four courses to help you get ahead. Partnerships with SARM, SUMA and Municipal Hail Insurance continue to support training opportunities that challenge and build on participants’ core business, leadership, and management skills.
For Roy, her role at Southeast College has also been a bit of a homecoming. Vicky grew up in a small community like Weyburn to parents who both worked in post-secondary education. As well, her husband Patrick was born in Saskatchewan and has deep family roots here, with many family members close by. “It’s funny how I am working in a small community college like my parents, surrounded by family,” she says.
As Vicky and her family settle into Weyburn, she is discovering more and more how much she loves her new home. “My dad used to say that you can’t hide in a small town and he’s right,” she says. “Here, you can’t do that. You’re part of a welcoming, friendly community and I am delighted to be part of it.”

The community comes together for mental health
C
onstable Melinda Mintenko has seen a lot in her many years of policing with the Weyburn Police Service. Many of her days are spent dealing with people in crisis, suffering and feeling like there is nowhere to turn for help. “I have been policing for 22 years, and I can’t leave a call without providing information about resources I know can help if the person reaches out,” says Melinda. “We deal with people that don’t know about the help they can access, even if they have lived here for years.” She has also seen people struggling with addiction—desperate for help without the information on where to find it.
48

Tasha Collins, program director at the Weyburn branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) was seeing the same thing. “We have seen people in crisis, and they had no idea where to go for help,” says Tasha. “Connecting our community to resources for help is essential, knowing where to receive support prior to a crisis or the need for acute care can help to reduce interactions with emergency services, police services, and ER visits.” Both women recognized separately that something had to change, and both started working on ways to get the message out. Melinda reached out to Tasha with an idea about how Weyburn residents and

visitors could be informed about mental health resources, and at the same time, show one another that mental health is an important cause to them. Together, they developed an idea—something simple yet powerful that would educate, show support to those who struggle and remember those our community has lost. “It was something easy. A door hanger, distributed through the community, that would list the resources available for mental health, and a way to show your support and caring about mental health,” says Melinda. “Our goal was to help connect the community.” They hoped this simple visual act would help show understanding and encourage people to talk to one another, and to create connection and encouragement
CMHA Weyburn funded the door hanger project as a mental health awareness initiative during Mental Health Week in May.

for neighbours to start talking to one another instead of struggling alone. In May, the door hangers were distributed through the Weyburn Review to 4,500 homes, and through the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce to local businesses during Mental Health Week. The response was overwhelming—in the best way possible. “The community loved it,” says Tasha. “We got calls from all over asking how to get one if people hadn’t received one. We also had it tweaked for all the local hotels, so they could help out-oftown guests if they needed it.” Norm McFadden, the reeve at the R.M of Weyburn reached out to distribute to his R.M. and four surrounding R.Ms. “It was incredible,” says Melinda.

“The biggest thing we want people to know is that there is help, and there is no shame in getting it when you need it,” says Tasha. “We all have moments that are hard. We all go through struggles. Knowing that you’re not alone, that the community cares, and that people want to help you is vital to mental health. If you need help, we are here to help you.”
The campaign was so successful that a phase two was immediately planned. Taking the idea to the next level, Melinda and Tasha and their respective organizations have created window clings with a QR code for people to scan and access mental health resources. “The clings were distributed to Weyburn schools, bars, hotels, gas stations, business, city facilities, park benches, and to various apartments, and oil field company site locations—anywhere people might be that could be in crisis,” says Tasha.

Help for the holidays The festive season can be fun and stressful. Here are a few tips on how to manage your holiday stress.
Help reduce expenses and refocus energies on thoughtfulness, creativity and truly personal gifts. 9. Put fun, humor, affection, and “break time” into your holidays. Laughter is a way for our body to naturally release stress. Benefits include Changes in perspective, it helps move nutrients and oxygen to body tissues, and it makes us feel good
A
s fall settles in and winter peeks around the corner, so do the holidays. It’s a time of year that can be welcome, dreaded, or both. It can mean extra pressure on time, money and relationships, and be hard on those who may already battle depression or anxiety.
The CMHA Weyburn Branch has ten tips to help you make it through: 1. Plan ahead. If Christmas is a stressor, “keep it simple.” Decorate, cook, shop or do whatever you can do on your list in advance. 2. As much as possible, organize and delegate. Don’t overextend yourself with too many commitments. Focus on doing what’s really important to you and your family. 3. Beware of overindulgence. Too many holiday spirits, fruitcake and too little exercise will probably make you feel lethargic, tired, and guilty come Boxing Day.
50
R eFined WEYBURN & AREA
4. Stay within budget. A call, facetime or a note to tell someone how important they are to you can be as touching as and sometimes more meaningful than a gift. 5. Remember what the holiday season is about for you. The season doesn’t have to be about shiny new toys and gift giving, it could be about creating your own meaningful traditions 6. Invite others. If you know someone is alone over the holidays, reach out to them and have a conversation whether in person or over the phone, over the fence, or even try to include them somehow. 7. Help others learn about shared social responsibility. Encourage your family and friends to make gifts for others so the focus is on giving rather than buying. 8. Gift-giving made easier and less expensive.
YOUR HEALTH
10. Remember the weather doesn’t help. Many people struggle with their mood in the winter months, could be the weather, could be the reduced day light. It can help to make small adjustments—maybe that’s leaving a hall light on so you wake up to some light, could be a “done list” instead of a “to do” list —making note of the things you have accomplished instead of all the things you may have “to do”. Although there are a lot of pressures during the holiday season you can make choices that may alleviate some of those pressures. The key is making a commitment to your mental health and putting some of these strategies to work. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Make your mental health a priority.
In the words of The Beatles…
All you need is love By Ardell Waldner
A
s the holidays approach and the to-do lists grow, it’s important to remember that you need to care for yourself. You can’t care for others if your tank is on empty.
Lastly, if you like to hear words like “I love you,” “You are special,” and “Good job,” your love language would be Words of Affirmation.
How can we love ourselves based on our love language? ACTS OF SERVICE • Set goals and work towards them • Declutter and clean your home or office • Volunteer for a cause or to help others • Donate to a charity or organization you believe in • Meal prep to lessen your daily burdens • Attack your to-do list and check something off
How do you care for yourself? Journal, take a hot bath, read a book…. sound familiar? I tried these things, but it didn’t seem to help. I stumbled across a video that said to practice selflove using your love language.
If you prefer hugs and physical touching, your love language is physical touch. Do you like to give gifts to others? Do you feel loved when you receive a gift even if it’s a small trinket from a discount store? This language is called Receiving Gifts.
RECEIVING GIFTS • Buy yourself flowers, or a new plant • Gift yourself a new class like cooking, learn to watercolor paint or something you have always wanted to try • Fund your hobby and turn it into a business • Buy that thing that you really want but feel its to extravagant, better yet save to buy it • Tackle that DIY project you have been putting off
• Use an app like “I am” to schedule affirmations to pop up regularly on your phone. • Use a gratitude journal each day write what you are grateful for today • Post notes or art décor pieces in your favorite spaces with meaningful affirmations like “I am worthy of my dreams.” • Look in the mirror and recite a loving mantra • Tell yourself what you love about yourself
There are five love languages: Acts of Service, Quality Time, Physical Touch, Receiving Gifts and Words of Affirmation.
Quality Time as a love language is as it sounds. This is the giving and receiving of uninterrupted time.
• Read a book • Spend time outside in nature • Get up an hour earlier to spend time alone before all the hustle and bustle of the day starts • Start a journal • Watch a favourite movie
WORDS OF AFFIRMATION
What is a love language?
If your primary love language is Acts of Service, you like to help others with thoughtful actions like switching their laundry or running errands to help lessen their burden. You also feel loved when others do something thoughtful to lessen you burden.
QUALITY TIME
PHYSICAL TOUCH • Get a facial or create a relaxing daily skin care regime massaging your face and neck • Take a hot bath • Have an after-shower moisturizing routine using lotions and oils • Massage your scalp • Make a hair or better yet nail appointment • Get a pedicure

How you can support local business
T
hink before you click. The online retail behemoths like Amazon and Wayfair make it SO EASY to shop from your favourite device. You’re a click or two away from pretty much anything you want being delivered to your front door. However, before you click to place your order, stop for a moment. Is there a place down the street where you could find that item? Your dollars work harder when they’re spent here. Plus, many local businesses are online now making it even easier to support local from the comfort of your couch. Spread the love. If you’re shopping for loved ones out of town, look for independent businesses in their hometown to buy from. Just like Weyburn, there are communities full of local companies vying for dollars and competing against the “big guys.” Make your money go local wherever you can. Buy gift cards. Gift cards are a great way to introduce new customers to a business. When giving presents, think about buying local gift cards to keep money close to home. Skip the apps. Food delivery apps, like online shopping, are easy to love. However, they can cut into restaurant profits in a big way. Instead of the app, order directly from the restaurant—and pick up your takeout to make it even easier. We find ordering straight from the

source and picking up is faster than the apps, and you can meet the people that make your food too! Socialize. Beyond spending money with local businesses, you can also help spread the word about them. Use your social media to make recommendations and share the companies you love doing business with. If you love them, chances are your friends and family will too. Share your skills. If you have a way to help a small business thrive, lend a hand. Some business owners might need help because they’re busy doing it all. If you have a suggestion on how they can grow, or can assist with a connection they could use, share the information. Show your thanks. When local businesses sponsor events or donate prizes, say thanks. Many of our teams and events wouldn’t happen without the generosity of small businesses. When you see a company doing their part, make sure they know they’re appreciated. Sign up for newsletters. Many businesses use email to share their news, promotions and more. Be sure to get on the mailing lists of the ones you love and spread them around to those you know might be interested. When you spend your money locally, you’re supporting your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours. It’s great for

TEN YEARS AND COUNTING Tips and tricks to make your life easier
A
By Ardell Waldner
s I enter my tenth year of business, I must start by thanking all of my clients today and over the years. Being a small business owner, the relationships you make are much more treasured and valuable. When I began this journey, everyone was busy, and the money flowed because we were still in the “boom.” Today, the business world looks a whole lot different. We’re dealing with everything from higher competition for customers to lack of employees, constant price changes on consumables like fuel, food and materials to supply chain breakdown and struggling to get what you need. COVID-19 changed the way we do business. As someone who works with many companies not to mention running my own, I felt that I could share a few tips of how I have weathered the new business landscape. TIPS TO HELP YOU GET AHEAD • Don’t let your phone run your day. Use a smartwatch so you can quickly screen calls and messages. You get to decide what is a priority and what isn’t. Use the phone as a tool not a distraction. • Use apps to help you get the job done. If you need to keep track of time, use a time app. If you need to look up prices frequently at your supplier have their app on your phone so you have it right at your fingertips. • Use the notes app in your phone to keep track of important ideas, things
to remember and stuff you need to do. If I wake in the night with an idea or thought, I will put it in my notes. • If I have back-to-back client meetings and need to remember something, I pause for a moment let the next client know I just need to make a quick note before I forget and again, I utilize my notes app. • We have all had moments in the middle of the night or sitting at dinner with the family where you panic, remembering what you forgot to do. If you can’t fix it until tomorrow, email yourself. For example, I forgot the thanksgiving turkey needs at least four days to defrost so I emailed myself to take it out when I get home. • Schedule your administration items like reading business emails or invoicing for first thing in the morning so you can take care of the forgotten items and get it out of the way quickly. Set a time limit and schedule it like an appointment. Another time saver— don’t sign up your email for everything just the important companies you need to know about.
• Be organized. Pack your truck or prep the night before a big job. Use checklists to make sure that you have everything, so you are not leaving the job site or venue. Save fuel and time. If you can’t go without something, see if you can order for delivery. Often cab companies will pick up and deliver items. • If you’re struggling to hire employees, think about hiring other businesses into your daily life to save time. When I got to a point that I could not keep up I used services to clean my house and prepare my meals. There are several individuals and small companies putting together full meals for a family. All I had to do was pop them in the oven and I could get back to work or spend a bit of time with my children playing a game or talking about their day. • If you need a new skill, pay someone who has done it before to teach you. It will save you so much time and effort allowing you to get back to all the important things. • Use a to-do list but don’t overload it. Put only the most important things on it. Move what didn’t get done to the next day and schedule it if possible. These are just a few ways you can adapt to get the job done.
• We all have time wasters like personal emails to return, Netflix and phone games. Don’t let those things get away from you. Schedule your ‘down time.’ • If you’re struggling to find employees, hire the family. Maybe it’s time to pitch in by picking up a hammer, scheduling orders, and picking up parts. There are many small jobs

ntrepreneurship can be hard. Strike that. It is hard. Whether you’re a one-person operation or managing dozens, you’re being pulled in many directions daily. That’s why it’s important to get advice from people that can help you manage your business well. If you’re just beginning, getting going can be overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. An accountant can help you start out on the right foot. “There are so many things to consider when you’re a small business owner,” says Nancy McMahon, accountant and owner at N.M. McMahon CPA

Professional Corporation. “It’s important to make sure you’re doing everything right. It can save a ton of work and heartache.” First, think about your possible revenue. Are you turning a hobby into a hustle? If so, you’ll have to collect GST if you earn more than $30,000 in revenue over a rolling twelve-month period. You may also need to collect PST, and those rules can be complex. “For example, if you haul gravel in the summer with your truck, you have to charge PST. If you haul snow in the winter with the same truck, you don’t collect PST,” says Nancy. “If you’re in the oilfield, you may

have to collect PST on work done above ground, but not below. It’s vital to know this information but can be hard without professional help.” Sole proprietorships versus incorporations can also be complicated. “If you’re starting small, a sole proprietorship can be the way to go. However, as you grow, incorporation may be necessary,” says Nancy. “However, incorporation comes with its own costs and issues.” Finally, you have to consider your insurance needs. Liability insurance is a necessity, and how much varies from
business to business. “Think about what can go wrong with your business and be honest about it,” says Nancy. “The last thing any entrepreneur needs is no coverage if your product or service fails and causes harm.” As well, business owners need to think about insurance if they get sick or hurt and can’t work, and life insurance too. She suggests adding an insurance professional to your team of advisors.

Test for asbestos first. Before 1990, asbestos was commonly used in more than 3,000 building materials for homes and other products. When disturbed, tiny asbestos fibres are released into the air where they can get into the lungs and cause severe damage over many years. If you think there is a risk of asbestos in your home or office, test for it to protect yourself and your family.

INVESTING in a down market By Mike Onstad Photos Images by Jon Gillies
When shoes or sporting gear go on sale, you are more inclined to buy these products because you are getting them at a discounted rate. The same theory should hold true with investing. When markets are down, stocks and mutual funds are on sale. There are many quality stocks that have been de-valued, even though they are still very profitable, mainly because the current markets have been oversold. Although a volatile market may scare you, the best thing to do is to take advantage of it!
How can I take advantage of the market?
BUY.
The oldest phrase in the investment world still holds true to some degree. Buy low, sell high. Although you should sell when it makes sense in your financial plan, buying at a low price gives your investment the opportunity to have higher growth.

USE A PAC PLAN.
ASSET-ALLOCATION REVISION.
A Pre-Authorized Chequing (PAC) plan is one of the most proven strategies of all time in the investing world. By investing on a regular, automatic basis (such as weekly or monthly) you are automatically taking advantage of the dips in the markets without even thinking about it. This strategy is simple—you buy more units of a fund when the price is low, and less units when high. This creates a lower dollar cost base, providing greater long-term gains.
Perhaps you have been in a low-risk, low-return fund, or GICs during a volatile time like this so you were able to mitigate or avoid any losses. Markets overreact up and down. Now is the time to switch into something with a little more exposure to equity to take advantage of stock that has been beaten up. Let us review your portfolio to make sure you are set up to reap the benefits of the market when it trends upwards again. This of course can only be done if your risk tolerance can handle it.

USE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACCOUNTS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.
You can invest into mutual funds and stocks with a tax-free savings account. A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a great account to use in an event where there is room for lots of gains. Everything you make from your investment is 100 per cent tax free. When saving for retirement—use your RRSP to reduce your taxable income and defer income tax until retirement. You pick your kit and the Big Jim’s team will set you up to mix the ingredients and pitch the yeast to start the fermentation of your wine. The Big Jim’s team will take care of the rest. Depending on the kit, your wine is ready within four to eight weeks. Once it’s ready, Todd and the Big Jim’s team will set up a packaging appointment where you can bottle, bag or keg your wine.
