$894,000 in profits! It pays to be a member. Literally!
It’s our third year of our Member Spark Rewards program! And we couldn’t be prouder! Our program is better and brighter! We’ve always used our profits for our members’ good. In fact, it’s a key difference between a bank and credit union. For the third year in a row, we’re using our profits for our members’ good through cold, hard cash!
Why? We are owned by the people who bank with us. Our financial wellness is reflected by our members’ financial wellness. When our members become financially fit, through saving, investing, and building credit, we become more profitable too. When we profit, we share those profits with our members - now in funds they have immediate access to! It’s our little way of saying thanks for being a member. Not a member yet? Isn’t it time? For more information on the new Member Spark Rewards program, visit us at weyburncu.ca or any of our branch locations.
We put people above all. Whatever your hopes, dreams, needs and wants are - that’s what we put first. Banking is just how we help you make it happen. Like other financial institutions, we are full-service and open to everyone. The difference? Weyburn Credit Union is run on principles. We use our profits for your good - not our pockets.

Publisher’s Message
I
t’s officially Spring! Isn’t this just the best time of the year? Trees budding, birds singing, hanging out in the backyard and BBQ season! The warmer, longer days always get me eager to plant my garden. To help hold me off, I’ve started a few plants inside. It’s fun for our daughters and myself to check on them waiting for some green to peek through. This year Refined will be doing two issues instead of three. This is our Spring/Summer issue and our Fall/Winter issue will come out in October. We are so grateful for the support we had this issue - making it our largest issue to date. Thank you to our existing clients and to all our new clients who joined us this issue. On the cover this time is the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show. Read more about the show on page 60 and mark your calendars June 1 & 2 to check the show out for yourself. The Oil Show is a wonderful event for the community and city of Weyburn. It was cancelled in 2021 due to Covid-19 but is back this year and better than ever. Following their article is our Oil & Gas feature. We have so many amazing businesses in this industry in southeast Saskatchewan. Lots of them are locally owned and operated and have been for many generations. We are always proud to have the opportunity to tell the stories of all these spectacular businesses. Enjoy reading our Make it a Summer to Remember article, it talks about all the wonderful things Weyburn has to offer. Plus, it gives you lots of ideas for fun things happening here this summer. What better time to set up your own cocktail bar than summer? Check out Let the Fun be Gin feature for tips and tricks on getting your home bar ready for all the summer cocktails you will be whipping up. The real estate market is heating up, so be sure to check out the editorial called Buying or Selling: Why a Realtor Makes a Difference. Did you know Saskatchewan is the largest producer of oats in the country, and that Canada is the largest exporter of oats in the world? Read more about the amazing agriculture that happens in our own backyard on page 52. As always, thank you so very much to our clients and readers for your support of my local magazine! Please enjoy this issue and the stories of the inspiring people, businesses and organizations in our community.

MAKE IT A SUMMER TO REMEMBER Weyburn is your destination for…everything By Brook Thalgott

he last two years have taught us how much we appreciate home and everything that makes it extraordinary. There has never been a better time to see what makes Weyburn take up a special place in our hearts. We caught up with Larry Heggs, executive director at the Weyburn Tourism & Weyburn Regional Economic Development to talk about what is happening in the city this summer. “We’re so excited to host Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor,

Russ Mirasty, on June 25 at the Soo Line Historical Museum,” says Larry. “We’re having high tea to recognize the museum’s silver collection.” The day-long event is celebrating the world’s largest personal collection of silver, which proudly calls Weyburn home. The Wilson Silver Collection consists of more than 5,000 items dated from 1750 to 1972. June 18 will see downtown Weyburn host the annual car show, a popular event every year. The end of June brings the Weyburn Young Fellows

With 18 holes and plenty of beautiful views, book a tee time and hit the links with a few friends. Don’t forget the city’s Tatagwa Trail System, walking tours of Weyburn’s heritage homes, and the Riverside Park Walking Path. The Credit Union Spark Centre is the city’s newest jewel with plenty to do for everyone. This beautiful facility in Jubilee Park can keep you and the
family busy all summer with its indoor and outdoor pools, paved walkways, ball diamonds, tennis and pickleball courts and more. “The Spark Centre is an amazing facility that our city should be so proud of,” says Larry. “It’s something to get excited about.” Beyond the things to do and see in Weyburn, the city is also a great place to make a home and build a life or a business. “We’re have a lot to be proud of here. Weyburn is a wonderful city with great people, a terrific quality of life and so much more,” says Larry.

alia Brackpool and Krystal Glowatski, two passionate local artists, have come together to create an innovative place for artists and artisans, and those who want to explore their artistic side. Located on 104 Third Street in Weyburn’s downtown, this new space is ready for anyone and everyone to pick up a brush, pastel, chalk or whatever medium to let what’s in your soul out into the world. The two women came together to pursue their dreams of artistic expression when they both needed it most. Krystal spent 17 years in academia, studying her way through criminology intent on earning her PhD. Malia was at home with her young family, struggling her way through motherhood after a traumatic birthing experience and parenting during a pandemic. Both of their lives’ journeys were stressful and complex, and both women sought refuge in art. That love of art and need for change would bring Krystal and Malia together, and unite them in an idea that their art could be more than just an outlet. Their love of art could become something bigger than themselves, and something they could share with the community they call home. SAY HELLO TO COLLABARTIVE STUDIOS

HOW CAN A GROUP RRSP
provide value to your company and employees?
I
f you’re a company or organization without an employee savings plan or pension, here is some things to consider if you’re thinking about offering a plan to your team.
What are Group RRSPs? A group registered retirement savings plan is a company-sponsored plan that employers can offer to their

employees for long term financial growth and savings.
How does it work? Contributions are made monthly that consist of an employer share and an employee share. The employer will decide the amount they want to match, and the employee can either opt for the maximum matched contribution

or above and beyond. The amount you choose to contribute will automatically be deducted from your pay.
What are the benefits to employees? RRSPs provide a reduction in taxable income every year. Investments grow on a tax-deferred basis, maximizing growth. Plans also impose disciplined savings

with your employees. People who are not inclined to save for their future, are forced to do so through payroll deduction.
As an independent broker we have no obligations to proprietary products and have competitive advisor fees. We have contracts with over 15 globally recognized companies, giving us the ability to provide virtually any range of mutual funds that exist.
What are the benefits to employers? Retention can be a hard thing to accomplish these days. A group RRSP plan provides incentive for employees to stay with the company. It can help attract talented employees to work for you vs the competition.

Give us a call or an email to see how a Group RRSP can help your business. Reach out today at 306-842-2841 or office@weyburnsecurity.ca.
How can we help? We take on all the administration of the plan. Once set up, all the heavy lifting is done by us. We will be in contact with your employees directly, provide instructions, advice and all our financial services. Our plans are also budget friendly. You will know your exact amounts that you are contributing and therefore can plan for it. You can adjust your contributions at any time.

he Weyburn Concert Series is excited to bring international countertenor, Terry Barber to our performance venue. The ‘countertenor’ is the rarest of all voice types. By definition, this is a male singer who can sing as high as a soprano or mezzo-soprano. Terry Barber has an extraordinarily broad vocal range and natural fluency in many musical styles. He has been featured on some of the world’s most storied stages and has worked with many of the music industry’s most prestigious figures. In 2009, Terry founded Artist for a Cause Inc., a non-profit which helps visual and performing artists to use their talent for community improvement. His personal work with the organization includes his ‘Sacred Journey’ tour program, as well as “Classical for Schools,” which will
impact more than 10,000 students this year throughout Canada and the United States. In this performance, Terry Barber will include hits from ten of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. Whether you’re a fan of Broadway, classical music, or even rock, there is something in this program for you! Some of those titles include Memory (Cats), All I Ask of You and Music of the Night (Phantom of the Opera), Any Dream Will Do (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), Heaven on their Minds (Jesus Christ Superstar), High Flying Adored (Evita), As If We Never Said Goodbye (Sunset Boulevard), and more.

Hitting the books The Efficient Bookkeeper makes your life easier By Brook Thalgott
D
o you love doing the books for your business? If so, you’re in the minority. For most business owners, the administrative tasks take up precious time that could be spent doing business. Did you know that you could learn how to do your books efficiently and easily, so you can spend your time doing the things that make you money? Say hello to the Efficient Bookkeeper, the brainchild of local bookkeeper Ardell Waldner at Ardell Small Business Solutions. Ardell has been in the bookkeeping business for years, and she’s seen it all. She knows the frustration that can come with trying to get it all right, and she’s here to help. “I know what it’s like to sit down to do the work and feel overwhelmed and ready to give up,” says Ardell. “Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way.” Ardell has created the first of a series of courses to train you or your staff how to make bookkeeping faster, easier and perhaps even painless. “These days, QuickBooks can really help you automate your bookkeeping to reduce the time you spend dealing with it,” she says. “My basic training course can show you how to set up your books for longterm success.” Beyond the time savings, efficient bookkeeping can also save you money. “Many companies and organizations rely

on accounting firms for their books and pay a lot for it,” says Ardell. “I find that most business owners know their books better than anyone else. If you can learn how to work better, you can bring your bookkeeping in-house and save that cost from a firm.” Ardell’s first video course will bring you the basics of bookkeeping and maximizing QuickBooks to your advantage. Plus, it’s a course you can return to over and over if you need a refresher and access to information. “I make it easy and accessible for users to learn and relearn as needed,” she says. “I want people to get their books right, and in a way that saves them time and money.” Learn more about The Efficient Bookkeeper course and app at facebook. com/theefficientbookkeeper or contact Ardell at 306.861.4000

PREPARING FOR YOUR HAIR REMOVAL APPOINTMENT You can't pluck, tweeze, sugar, wax, or epilate within 3 weeks of your appointment. The laser needs a hair in the follicle to target. However, you have to shave within 24 hours prior to your appointment. Any hair that is sticking out of the skin will attract the light but the longer the hair is, the further the light has to travel down the hair to get to the follicle. That means the less likely the light is to reach and destroy the follicle.

What accountants do Accountants perform many vital functions in businesses, and for both businesses and individuals. They can do everything from corporate and personal tax planning to business planning and valuations to handling audits and bankruptcies. They are an integral part of business management teams, and they can also provide tax advice and planning services to individuals who need assistance.
When you need an accountant Even if you think your personal tax situation isn’t that complicated, an accountant may be able to help with planning to help you make the most of your financial situation. If retirement is in your future, an accountant can help plan your taxes so you’re not paying any more than you need to. They can also help with estate planning to ensure that your assets end up where you want to them to go.

If you’re planning to start a business, even a small sole proprietorship, an accountant can assist with getting you and your books on the right track. Accountants can also advise on when your business is big enough to incorporate and provide advice on how to manage your salary versus dividends. If you’re looking to buy or sell a business, an accountant can help guide the process to make sure you’re buying a good investment or getting the most from your asset.
Get help However, the best way to know if you need an accountant is to ask one. A designated, professional accountant can review your situation and advise on what you need and what you don’t. Even if you’re just starting out, an accountant can help get you on the right track for the future. The help you need is out there— let an accountant show you the way.

OPENING NEW DOORS Introducing private securities into your portfolio
T
hese days, markets can be volatile with swings up and down that can be more than some investors want to handle. A well-constructed, diversified portfolio that takes into consideration your risk tolerance and your financial goals can help prevent both volatility and heartburn. Private securities can be an excellent alternative asset class for portfolios looking for stability and consistent growth while avoiding the dramatic swings of today’s markets.
What are private securities? Private securities include investments into companies (private equity), into real estate, and into debt (mortgages and loans). Unlike your typical retail investments into publicly traded firms, private securities are investments into private businesses that seek to raise capital by issuing equity or borrowing from investors. Typically, these investments have been available only to high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors such as pension funds and charitable foundations.
How can private securities work for me? Private securities can offer a safer haven from the volatile markets of today and provide a smoother rate of return and smooth out the “bumps in the road.” Gone are the days of the traditional 60/40 split in portfolios from the 1980s
and 1990s. Today’s investors need to focus on the new 40/50/10 asset allocation model, and private securities can play an important role in it.
The Harbourfront advantage Private securities are a more exclusive investment vehicle and not offered by most retail financial institutions and brokerages. Harbourfront has exclusive access to private funds through Willoughby Asset Management that are invested in the private debt, private real estate and private equity spaces. If you’re looking for a prudent, probable and predictable portfolio option we have exclusive access to this asset class for our clients. In turn, you’ll receive an improved risk-adjusted rate of return, a more balanced portfolio and monthly liquidity that may not be available to investors at larger institutes.

Buying & Selling
Why a REALTOR® makes a difference By Brook Thalgott

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA
BUSINESS
For most of us, the largest purchase we’ll ever make is the place we call home. Because it’s such an important decision that involves a lot of money, getting help through the process is a good idea. In fact, it’s a great idea. Call in the experts Whether you’re buying for first time or selling to move into something bigger or smaller, a REALTOR® can guide you through it all from the very start. Buying and selling real estate can be complex, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. A REALTOR® can take care of the work so you don’t have to.
What a REALTOR® can do for you A REALTOR® knows the market that they serve and often details that the average person doesn’t. That REALTOR® market knowledge can be leveraged by you, the client, to ensure you’re getting the expertise about the property you want to buy. It also means that when you want to sell, the REALTOR® can help price your property appropriately and market it to the people that want to see it. A REALTOR® can take a look at the market if you’re a buyer and find the properties that work for your lifestyle and your budget. And if you’re selling, they’re there to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
Let a REALTOR® do the work so you don’t have to.
The REALTOR® difference
It’s also important to know that not everyone in real estate is a REALTOR®. To be considered a REALTOR®, the agent must be a member of The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). With that membership, the REALTOR® is also expected to be committed to the REALTOR® Code. That code is the standard of conduct for all real estate agents who are REALTORS®. They must also be knowledgeable about developments in real estate. A REALTOR® has the information you need to make good decisions with their access to comparable prices, neighborhood trends, housing market conditions and more. They must also continually update their education. REALTORS® take courses, workshops and other professional development to stay current in real estate. Finally, REALTORS® have access to Board MLS® Systems, which assists in the sale of properties.
Make the call No matter where you are in the real estate process— thinking about buying or selling or actively in the market—a REALTOR® can help advise and advocate for you. They are there to make sure the transaction is handled professionally with your best interests in mind. Let a REALTOR® do the work so you don’t have to.

AT HOME
Love where you Live By Erin Legg
When was the last time you spent so much time at home? If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past few years, it’s the value of having a living space you love.
Separate Spaces
B
Multi-use spaces are becoming more singular. Rather than a lone treadmill in the middle of the rumpus room, exercise rooms provide homeowners with a private gym experience. Reading nooks and home libraries offer a quiet space to catch up with your book club or for the kids to study. Home offices, once primarily an afterthought and either haphazardly set up in a corner in the basement or unused closet, are now top of mind. People are paying close attention to the functionality of their
ecause of that, interior designers and home builders have noticed a shift from neutral, minimalistic homes designed and decorated with the next buyer in mind, to spaces that are more personal and reflective of homeowners’ individuality and character. People are focused more than ever on the functionality of available space and how to best make an at-home private retreat away from the rest of the world.

A few years ago, open concept living was the dominant home design. Everyone wanted a space where the kitchen, dining and lounging areas merged into one giant super room. While open-concept living was in demand for decades, the global pandemic has significantly impacted how much people value privacy and compartmentalizing.

workspace, including lighting, ventilation, practical furniture and—perhaps most important—a door to shut at the end of the day. Even in the backyard, separate spaces are gaining in popularity. Homeowners treat their outdoor havens like mini-getaway zones, complete with a cooking space around the corner from the socializing area and a private sanctuary tucked behind some bushes with a zen pool or fire pit. Builders have also noticed a resurgence of the front porch—a perfect little break from the home office and a spot of solitude for your morning coffee.
More Personality Homeowners’ unique personalities drive interior design. It’s almost as if being forced to spend time at home, socially distancing from others and staring at our beige or grey walls made us realize something: our home doesn’t have to be
Want to compartmentalize your space quickly and easily? Not sure if you are ready yet to invest in a renovation to close your floor plan? Make better use of the space you do have. Add some room dividers to break up an open flow. Rearrange your furniture to create alternative transitions from room to room. Invest in dual-use furniture, like a table for your laptop during the day and a dining platform for evenings.
boring! The shift from minimalism to maximalism means greater authenticity when picking flooring, furniture, and finishings. Walls have emerged as a significant focal point. Want to add character in the splashiest way possible? Turn your attention to your walls. Trends include jewel tones paint, textured wallpaper, painted ceilings, built-in shelving, and unique panelling. Kitchens remain the number one investment for homeowners. While
many still prefer the bright, airy feel of white cabinets and light-coloured tiles, the craving for more drama is evident with an increased demand for darker cabinets, black fixtures and deep, rich wall tones to provide a sultry atmosphere for appetite. There is also growing interest in the products and construction methods used to create a sensible, healthy living environment. People are paying attention to materials and investing in ecofriendly fixtures such as energy-efficient windows, low-flow water fixtures and native landscaping. Proving it’s not always about what’s on the inside, exterior facelifts have kept contractors busy in neighbourhoods across town in the past couple of years. It’s smart for homeowners to be concerned about their home’s exterior— our extreme Canadian weather means we must stay on top of quality, highly effective exterior finishes. And why not look good while we’re at it? Charming mixes of old school brick and new age stucco in modern colours have appeared on new and old homes. Vinyl remains popular for its durability, and (thankfully) it has come a long way aesthetically in the past few decades. Also top of many

homeowners’ exterior renovation plans: hardy board, stone and metal. The pandemic made real the idea of actually living in our home, which has brought a shift to how they are designed and decorated. Regardless of our preferences towards these trends, one thing is true: it’s personal! Our home, our way.

he kitchen is the heart of your home. The kitchen is the place where we go to cook meals and be happy with our family and friends. Unfortunately, it’s often the last room we renovate because it can be overwhelming to think about getting it done. However, Weyburn has the place to go to make your kitchen both functional and stylish. Ideal Cabinets & Décor can make your kitchen brand new once again or create a kitchen in your new home. “We can work with you through your kitchen project from the very start,” says Norma Dunsmore, sales consultant and designer at Ideal Cabinets. “We are the place to find the latest and greatest in kitchen trends and the classic looks, too.” Ideal Cabinets has breathed new life into kitchens across Weyburn and the southeast over the years. Light and white cabinets are still popular choices, and now navy blue and dark green are making an appearance to add a splash of colour to spaces. Dark painted cabinets are also fashionable now, looking great as a feature and are wonderful for islands. The company’s Coastal Colours line is eye-catching with their blue and green washes over beautiful wood grain cabinets.

Get clean and tidy—
it ’s easier than you think! By Brook Thalgott
T
here’s never been a better time to get your home spic and span. Here’s a guide to getting tidy without feeling overwhelmed. Take your time and relax—one day at a time will get things done faster than you think.
Day 1 - The Kitchen • Clean out the fridge. Toss expired food and condiments. Wash the shelves and drawers. • Tackle the pantry. Take out anything you won’t eat and get rid of anything expired. If you can donate food, do it. Wipe down shelves and organize items as you put them back. • Take a look inside your cupboards. Remove things that you don’t need— small appliances, dishes, pots and pans, containers, linens and more. Donate to someone who needs it. Wipe down shelves, drawers and doors, and organize as you put back what you’ll actually use. • Clean the oven and the microwave, wash any windows and run a cleaning cycle on your dishwasher.

Wipe down walls and clean windows. • Clean any screens and organize your electronics and remotes. • Vacuum or wash the floors. Day 4 - The Bedrooms • Go through closets and drawers, and remove anything that doesn’t fit or that you haven’t worn in a year. Arrange to sell or giveaway. • Sort books and toys and take out anything your kids don’t play with for sale or donation. • Organize as you put things away, and make sure your kids help (and learn where things go).

WE GROW THAT Locally grown ingredients make their way across the country and around the world By Brook Thalgott
e all “know” that the food we grow in Saskatchewan ends up on grocery store shelves across the planet, but have you ever really thought what you’re eating that may have been grown just down the road? While Saskatchewangrown ingredients are already found in familiar places, more of our agricultural exports are ending up in foods and spaces that might surprise you—and making waves around the world.

Oats Saskatchewan oats are for more than just oatmeal these days. Oats, a staple in breakfast foods for generations, are now finding new life as plant-based milk. Regina’s Mera Food Group began producing oat milk last year that you can now find on Co-op store shelves across the country. The company uses locally grown oats to create the milk, which is also processed and packaged right here in Saskatchewan.
Pulses We have heard a lot about plant protein in the past few years, particularly when it comes to lentils, peas and chickpeas—three crops grown right here. Saskatchewan’s Avena Foods is taking these ingredients to the next level, again. The long-established miller is taking its tempered flours made from local lentils, peas, chickpeas and beans to the plantbased dairy sector.
AGRICULTURE FEATURE
Did you know
Saskatchewan is the largest producer of oats in the country, and that Canada is the largest exporter of oats in the world?
Canola
Did you know Saskatchewan exported $1.7 billion in canola oil in 2020?
The company, along with Toronto’s YoFiit and Manitoba’s Roquette Canada facility, is working on a project to create plant-based milk and probiotic-rich yogurt from plant products grown here. “We are very happy to support a fellow Canadian food processing company on this exciting project. Avena’s tempered flours, already sold commercially for a number of food applications, show considerable promise for beverages. We look forward to working with YoFiit and our other partners to increase Canadian production and worldwide consumption of plant-based beverages and foods,” said Gord Flaten, CEO at Avena Foods, when the project was announced last November.
Did you know
that in 2020, Saskatchewan exported $2.2 billion in lentils, and $1.2 billion in peas?
The yellow, waving fields of canola that appear every summer are quintessentially Saskatchewan. Canola, a long-time crop here, is finding new life as more than just a source of cooking oil. Three canola crushing plants have been announced in the last year—two in Regina and one near Estevan at Northgate—have big plans for the common crop. Canola is growing in popularity as a food ingredient because of its protein content. Next door in Manitoba, Merit Functional Foods is processing our canola into food-grade canola protein for nutritional bars and meat, seafood, and egg alternatives. Merit opened its world-leading facility in 2021 and it’s the only place on the planet now processing canola into protein ingredients. “We know that plant-based products are here to stay, and we are proud to play a huge part in bringing more plant-based protein to the world,” Merit Co-CEO Ryan Bracken said in December 2021. “We’re here to provide the market with non-GMO pea and canola protein that raises the bar for functionality and nutritive content.”
Hemp Hemp’s popularity is also rising fast. It’s not only a fantastic fibre but hemp seeds are an excellent source of protein. Saskatchewan hemp seeds are part of a project to develop a pea-hemp flour blend with Saskatoon’s NRGene Canada and partners Farmers Business Network Canada, Inc., Pulse Genetics and Manitoba Harvest. The project is focused on developing new pea and hemp varieties for use in food and ingredients, including pea-hemp flour. NRGene will lead the development of the new plant varieties through its genome work, and those varieties will be grown right here in Saskatchewan. “We are thrilled to take part in this partnership that will advance the plant-based protein sector—one of the growing sectors impacting global sustainability,” said NRGene CEO and co-Founder Dr. Gil Ronen at the project’s announcement last summer. “This project is one of a kind, as it ties together companies from different stages of the industry value chain. The fact that

we can apply NRGene’s cutting-edge genomics to help our partners naturally develop and grow varieties with characteristics required to the specific end-product—the pea-hemp flour blend—will bring to the market improved product in a significantly shorter time. I believe it will provide great value and global advantage to the Canadian alternative protein industry.”
Honey Saskatchewan’s beekeepers are also producing highly sought-after honey, as one of the world’s celebrated honey producing regions. Our bees are known for their fine work around the globe. In fact, Wendell Estate Honey at MacNutt, Sask. was the only North American honey company at the 2020 London International Honey Awards (LIHA). The Wendell Farm has been producing honey since the 1930s, and is well-known for its quality, Saskatchewan-raised honey. As well, honey produced here often ends up on store shelves under brand names you know and love, like Bee Maid. It also finds its way into other tasty products, such as mead wines made by Moose Jaw’s Prairie Bee Meadery. Next time you’re in the grocery store or at your favourite restaurant, think about what’s in your cart or on your plate. It could have gotten its start in a field not far from you.

s another spring thaw sets in, our agricultural community is just weeks away from another year in the field. It’s also the time to ensure that soil has what it needs to produce good yields. We caught up with Jason Stewart, an agrologist at Parrish & Heimbecker to talk about what farmers should be thinking about this spring. “We’re not far out from seeding, and now is the time to address any soil health issues,” says Jason. “Micronutrients like zinc and boron can be deficient in our region, especially due to the summer

heat we have experienced in the last few years.” He notes that low zinc levels can impact spring wheat and durum, and low boron can impact canola. Jason says that producers can address issues in the spring based on soil testing done last fall. “It’s best to test in the fall, to see what levels are after a growing season,” he says. “Once we know what we’re dealing with, we can make suggestions on how to address any issues in the spring.” Because fertilizer is the input that can have the biggest impact on both yield and costs, he suggests talking to an expert about what your operation needs. “When you know what is happening in your soil, you can make good decisions about what you need to improve conditions,” says Jason. “We can help
"Many growers tend to skip soil and tissue testing because of the upfront out-of-pocket costs," says Javan Davis, crop inputs manager at P&H. "However, with the high cost of fertilizer, these tests are an important tool in reducing the impact to their wallet." He says that test results allow their agronomy team the opportunity to help growers determine if they are applying the right fertilizer type at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place. "A properly managed fertility program can strengthen a crop plan and provide economic benefits that will outweigh the initial cost of testing," says Javan. "A poorly managed nutrient application can decrease profitability and increase unnecessary nutrient losses." With both certified crop advisors and professional agrologists on staff, P&H Weyburn is equipped to help growers navigate through the challenges to develop a unique nutrient program tailored to their individual farm.

No matter what condition your soil is in, the advice of an agrologist can make a difference to your operation. “Soil and tissue testing are tools that can help

RAISING YOUR PUPPY RIGHT
C
ongratulations on your new pet! Now that you have that bundle of energy that is chewing on everything, let’s make sure we get him started off right. This cute puppy will worm their way into your family and your life will forever be better because of it. One of the things veterinary technologists love most is sharing our knowledge, so don’t be shy with your questions when you come in for your puppy visits.
Protection is important Vaccinations are critical, especially with dogs being more social than ever. Dogs require what we call core vaccines—a vaccine that is necessary regardless of lifestyle or risk. These vaccines protect against diseases we have here in southeast Saskatchewan like Distemper, Parvo Virus, Rabies and more. There are additional vaccines that some dogs need because of lifestyle and risk such as Bordetella (often referred to as Kennel Cough) for those that attend doggie daycare, grooming or the dog park. Dogs that travel south should be protected against Canine Influenza. These vaccines require boosters with the average puppy receiving their vaccinations at 8, 12, 16 weeks, one year of age and ranges from annual to every three years depending on the vaccine. Your puppy should avoid dog parks and playing with unvaccinated dogs until they are fully vaccinated.

The right food Growing up healthy starts with what they eat. Premium diets and proven diets are a great place to start. Feeding your puppy for who they are is very important. A large breed puppy has a different growth curve than a small breed puppy and therefore different nutritional needs. Look for large breed and small breed formulas when selecting a diet whenever possible. Avoid diets that advertise grain free. These diets use human diet trends as marketing techniques and less than one per cent of dogs are truly allergic to grains. In 2019 the FDA released a statement to avoid grain free diets as they have been linked to heart problems in dogs. We have seen dogs in our clinics develop these issues as a result of eating grain free diets. Veterinary technologists and veterinarians are very knowledgeable about nutrition and are happy to assist you in learning more about this important topic.
behavior is encouraged. If one family member is the only one making the effort than the puppy is less likely to succeed. If going to classes have different handlers attend, this way you know if the dog knows the command. Exposure to new environments and meeting new people and pets make for the most social pets. Once your puppy is on its way with vaccination protection, I like the 30-day rule. Have your puppy meet thirty new people in thirty days and receive a treat from each person. You will never have a hard time finding someone willing to stop and interact with your puppy while you go for a walk or visit a pet friendly retailer or even take a ride through the drive-thru. Remember the time you invest now is well worth it, as they are most impressionable as puppies.
Mind your manners Sit! Good dog! Socialization and manners make good dogs into great dogs. This can be done in formalized classes or at home. The most important thing is to get started by making it a part of daily life and get the whole family involved. Dogs learn best through positivity and repetition. Start with a plan and ask yourself questions like do I want my puppy to sit before I feed him? Should he sit when company comes in? What door do we want him to ask to go outside at? These questions can help you build your daily routine around the things that matter most to you. Then everyone in the house can contribute to ensuring that

Quick Dick McDick grew up on a community pasture north of Tuffnell, SK and after graduating high school, like many young Saskatchewanians, headed out to the oil patch in Northern Alberta. After a 20-year career in the oil and gas industry, this Saskatchewan boy came back home to Tuffnell in the fall of 2019 and accidentally created a social media persona named Quick Dick McDick. Quick Dick McDick (Dickson Delorme) is part of a 4000 acre/350 cattle mixed farming operation near Tuffnell, SK. IT’S A FAMILY THING
John Kmita Ltd. proudly serves the southeast By Brook Thalgott
“The third generation of Kmitas are now preparing to join in what their grandparents started. It’s wonderful to see.” - Jonathan Kmita John Kmita
John Kmita Ltd.has deep roots in the Weyburn area, dating back 50 years to 1972. Company founders John and Sandy Kmita started it all with the purchase of a rig from Natchez, Mississippi. That purchase would lead to a family business that is still going strong today. John would run the rigs and Sandy managed the books. Together they would also raise four children—Shannon, Michelle, Jonathan and Tyler.

come on board in 2010, 2013 and 2019. Despite the finicky patch and its bad timing, John and Sandy built a company that has succeeded for five decades with no signs of slowing down. Today, John Kmita Ltd. is proudly owned and operated by Jonathan and Tyler Kmita, the second generation to run the

family business. John retired in 2005, handing over the reins to Jonathan and Tyler who grew up learning the ropes right next to their dad. “I started at age 15 with my summers spent helping out anywhere I could,” says Jonathan. He would leave Weyburn to earn his teaching degree before returning home and joining the family business. John Kmita insisted his children get an education “to fall back on, just in case.” Jonathan would never teach, but he’s grateful for the time to study. “That time was really where I learned many life lessons including how to be an independent, resourceful adult,” he says. “My education also taught me many skills in how to teach and train people

That education has paid off too, as the Kmitas are also long-time ranchers. “We started out with 40 acres from my mom’s parents, and Dad expanded into ranching in the mid-1980s.” The Kmita ranch would also lead the family into the rodeo circuit, a hobby and passion they carry on today. “Between the company, the

Building careers that build the province Southeast College offers education that works By Brook Thalgott Photos Freeze Frame Photography
When it comes to choosing a career path, it’s important to pick something that works for you, your talents, and the life you want to build. Southeast College can help put you into a career that does all three. With its comprehensive range of programs and courses, you can find the education that delivers.
“W
e’re always developing programming that works for both our students and our local industry,” says Sheena Onrait, marketing and communications manager at Southeast College. “We have launched a new program for heavy equipment operators recently that offers great opportunities for learners and organizations who are looking for that skill set.” The new program got its start in 2021 at Southeast College’s Estevan campus. The program is also unique in Saskatchewan, with its high-tech hands-on training. Students study for 12 weeks in courses that combine classroom training with simulations and real-world experience. “Unlike previous offerings of this program, our new program is packed with learning where students get to practice what they learn in the classroom with our state-of-theart training equipment,” says Sheena.

Southeast College serves over 70 communities spread throughout 20,000 square kilometers in southeast Saskatchewan. The College has campuses in six communities, including: Assiniboia, Estevan, Indian Head, Moosomin, Weyburn, and Whitewood. Through partnerships with postsecondary institutions, Southeast College delivers a wide variety of career, vocational, and academic programming to meet the educational, economic and labour force demands of southeastern Saskatchewan. Additionally, the College serves many business and industry stakeholders by offering numerous business, safety, and industrial programs and courses at its six campus locations.
Southeast College has eight state-ofthe-art simulation equipment pieces that safely simulate the look, feel and experience of real-world heavy equipment. Students get to practice their skills in virtual and augmented reality, working with a grader, excavator, front end loader, rubber tire hoe, articulated truck (rock truck) and dozer without the risks that come with real equipment. These high-tech training simulations let students develop their abilities safely, while building confidence and retaining and reinforcing critical knowledge. “Our students develop ‘muscle memory’ with our simulation equipment,” says Sheena. “When they are ready for the field, learners are more comfortable and ready for trying the ‘real world’ equipment.”

welders and of course, heavy equipment operators. “Our trades training supports both students and the industries in the southeast,” says Sheena. Southeast College also offers university classes through the University of Regina, allowing learners to stay close to home as they start their university degrees. Continuing education courses are also available, teaching skills in everything from critical thinking to conflict resolution, to pesticide application and computer skills. “We offer a full suite of courses to improve your skill set in so many ways,” says Sheena. “Plus, we also offer industry and safety training to keep workers current on the certifications they need for work.” Whatever you’re looking for—a career, new skills, a high school diploma or staff training—Southeast College delivers what you need. “If you’re in search of education or training, start with us,” says Sheena. “Our advisors can put you or your business on the path you’re looking for.”
Heavy equipment operator students then get to build their skills with actual road works for the City of Estevan. The City of Estevan and Southeast College have a partnership where students practice what they have learned building roads in Estevan. “The field projects in Estevan solidify what has been learned in the classroom and on the simulation equipment,” says Sheena. “It caps off the program and prepares students for the workforce.” The Heavy Equipment Operator program offers cohorts in the spring and summer when road building and practical training works best. Beyond road building, heavy equipment operators work in the construction and maintenance of bridges, pipelines, and buildings, as well as in mining, manufacturing, and construction. “It’s a rewarding and indemand career,” says Sheena. “Annual estimates for earnings run anywhere from $41,000 to $79,000 a year, and job prospects for graduates are excellent.”
Southeast College also offers programs and courses for a diverse set of careers across its campuses. Adult learners can complete their high school education through the College’s Adult Education program. There are also excellent opportunities in post-secondary education in many fields. Health care workers are vital to our province and those careers are indemand. Southeast College offers programs for continuing care assistants, early childhood educators, health care cooks, practical nurses and youth care workers. Fast Trucking Service By Brook Thalgott
With deep roots in the southeast, Fast Trucking Service Ltd. has been serving the region for 65 years—with no signs of slowing down.
F
ast Trucking Service got its start in 1957 with a winch truck and a water truck. Fast forward to 2022 and the company has grown into one of the largest family-owned rig moving companies in western Canada. Chances are that if you drilled an oil well in the area from 1983 to now, there is a good chance that Fast moved the rig.

The Days have called southeast Saskatchewan home for decades. All four Day children—Dennis, Larry, Linda and Teresa—were born and raised in Carnduff. The family lived in a trailer in the family’s farmyard or at the rig before moving onto the land that is now the Fast Trucking Service yard. Founded by Tony and Vi Day, the company is now proudly run by Dennis,

Larry, Linda and Teresa. Dennis is the the company’s president, Larry is the general manager, and Linda cares for the books in the office alongside Vi. The third generation of Days are also learning the ropes with Dennis’s sons Harly and Nathan driving truck on rig moves and fill in on the service rigs. Larry’s son Lucas has been swamping on rig moves and Levi helps out when he is not busy wrestling.
Dennis receiving the 2019 Southeast Saskatchewan Oilman of the year.
Dennis Day was named as the 2019 Southeast Saskatchewan Oilman of the Year. Dennis follows in the footsteps of his father, Tony, who was also named Oilman of the Year in 1999. In 2009 Tony was inducted into the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Hall of Fame.
In the mid-1990s, Fast Trucking built its 41,000 square foot flagship shop in Carnduff, which still serves the company today. The company expanded in 2005 with the purchase of Sam’s Trucking. In 2019 a new division was added in Swift Current. Today, Fast Trucking is one of the largest rig movers on the prairies.
Fast has covered territory from northeastern BC near the Yukon border, northern Manitoba and Ontario, all the way to south Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Fast Trucking was the beginning of much more for the Day family. In 1979, Tony started Day Construction with a Cat to
help with rig moves, which turned into lease building. In 1986, Tony, Dennis and Larry started their own oil company, TDL Petroleum. They drilled their first oil well south of Carnduff, along with several other wells over the years. In 1996, General Well Service was founded and that’s just to name a few of the companies the Days run today. The Day family knows that none of these companies would be successful without the hard work of nearly 300 employees and their dedicated management team. “This company is our family’s legacy, and we’re proud of what we have built in the community with our employees and our customers.” With locations in Carnduff, Estevan, Swift Current, Virden and Pierson (and over 1,000 pieces of equipment), Fast Trucking Service Ltd. and their group of companies is proud of the industry and the communities they serve. Three generations of the Day family and a team of 400 are hardworking, honest and committed to their customers just like Tony and Vi Day.

Vi Day: A legend in the southeast By Rachelle and Kiana Apperley
Vi Day was born and raised in Carnduff, Saskatchewan. In 1957, she met her husband Tony Day and they married in 1960. Together, they built multiple oilfield companies such as Fast Trucking Service, Day Construction and General Well Servicing. In the early years where it was uncommon to see a female truck driver, she was breaking stereotypes and she did so with four small children in tow. In fact, she was one of the first women in Saskatchewan to have a Class 1 license. Even today, Vi can be often found juggling two phones at once, all while listening for the CB radio. She has worn many hats over the years, as a driver, dispatcher, and bookkeeper to name just a few. She shows no signs of slowing down as she continues to manage and oversee several companies that are decades old. Many of the companies have dedicated and long-standing employees and customers. This could be credited to Vi’s loving and nurturing personality. It’s not unheard of for an employee to be sitting at the kitchen table having coffee or being sent home with a meal. She has spent countless hours in the kitchen making her famous cinnamon buns to be delivered to the rigs. Prior to the digital switch at SGI, Vi was on a first name basis with all the SGI employees even though she’d never met many of them. Vi’s successes come in the form of dedicated employees, philanthropy and high standards of a family-run

business. She is selfless and hardworking. She deserves so much more credit than she gives herself. Vi and Tony are both well-known throughout southeast Saskatchewan for their huge hearts and generosity. The town of Carnduff holds several name sakes in their dedication to their philanthropy including the Tony and Vi Day Resource Centre, the Tony Day Family Medical Clinic and the Fast Centennial Arena. Vi is the first to volunteer whether it is a donation for a fundraiser, food for an event or supporting local businesses. Above her business duties she can

C
ompetition Environmental got its start in 1997, when the need for land spreading was a relatively new way to dispose of drilling fluids. Competition bought four vacuum wagons and four local farmers leased their tractors to the company to begin what has grown into a fleet of 25 vacuum trucks, semi vacs, combo units and tractor vac wagons.
Competition is based in Carnduff with a satellite office in Gull Lake Saskatchewan, and presently operates in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, land spreading drilling fluids and disposing of oilfield and industrial waste with our full line of equipment.

EAGLE SKY VENTURES
E
agle Sky Ventures was founded in February 2021 by Derrick Big Eagle and Dennis Day. It was a risky idea during a precarious time in the oil and gas industry. However, with over 75 years industry experience within the ownership group and management, they decided it was a good time in the industry to get established and purchased two full and modern service rig packages. The company’s general manager, Mike Fowler, sought out a qualified team of employees that would best support the needs of the company. After hiring employees and management support, Eagle Sky Ventures started operating two rig packages by May 2021. In less than year after careful market and customer needs assessment, Eagle Sky Ventures grew to a six-rig fleet that operates in southeast Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba. Eagle Sky Ventures prides itself on being local and giving local employees a chance to succeed. From the

ENERGIZING TECHNOLOGY THAT WORKS StreamTECH knows what the oil and gas industry needs By Brook Thalgott Photos Big Dog Photography

hen you think of Weyburn and southeast Saskatchewan, the first things to come to mind are typically energy and agriculture, likely not apps or technology startups. Well, think again. Weyburn’s StreamTECH is bringing a touch of Silicon Valley to the southeast and supporting the oil and gas sector at the same time. StreamTECH is a local technology startup founded by Steven Hansen, a veteran in the oil and gas industry. In his work, he noticed how much paperwork his company generated and how difficult it was to stay organized. “I saw how hard it was to manage all the information we had to collect, often using multiple software platforms to do it,” says Steven. “Once I looked at how much we were spending I knew there had to be a better way.” That observation and desire to improve and streamline work would lead Steven to partner with other local developers including Carson Skjerdal, who is also originally from Weyburn. With this team, they would develop a prototype application that showed excellent promise for his company and possibly the industry as a whole. “We spent time refining the app and getting opinions and advice from industry professionals on what could make it even better,” says Steven. “We released the prototype to 18 different companies to gather valuable feedback based on real world use by companies in their day-to-day operations.”
