ARE WE LIKED? Here's what our Refined clients are saying...
My experience with using Refined as an advertising channel has been well worth every cent. Previously I had used options that seemed more affordable such as Facebook, referral bonuses and word-ofmouth. This year I decided to expand my advertising budget and try something new. Thanks to Refined I have hit a more broader target audience and am now booked out farther than I have ever been before! My first article with them has more than paid off my ad in the first issue and also my ads with them for the rest of the year! I have clients of all ages and demographics saying “I found you in the magazine.”

How to Choose
the Right Real Estate Agent Choosing the right realtor makes the buying and selling process easier. It’s one of the most important decisions you make when buying or selling a home. A good agent can help you navigate the process with minimal stress, whereas someone not so skilled may make the process harder on you and your family. 8 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

W
hen you’re ready to choose a real estate agent, the first goal is to find someone you can trust and feel comfortable with. You also want to work with someone who is easy to communicate with and has proven local knowledge of the market. When you are searching for the right realtor, there are no dumb questions. Ask about anything and everything you can think of. This will help you learn about the agent and identify potential red flags. You want your goals to be their No. 1 priority.
Ensure you hire an agent who is willing and able to answer any and all questions you might have about the home purchasing process.
Consider compatibility and personality When you are buying a home, you will be spending a lot of time looking at homes in the company of your realtor. Ensuring your personalities mesh is important. Take your time choosing someone who is relatable and is a good fit for your personality. Choose for you, not for the house. If you are a “move forward and get things done” kind of person, do you want a super laid-back realtor or vice versa?

You need to choose an agent who you feel comfortable around and who shares your way of embracing life. Whether it’s business or pleasure, finding the right person comes down to principles and values. Look for open, honest communication and trust As the client, you begin the dialogue. Pay close attention to the agent or broker and how they listen and ask questions. Ensure you hire an agent who is willing and able to answer any and all questions you might have about the home purchasing process. Ask about how often the agent will communicate with you. As a seller, ask about the ways the agent will market your home. If you’re a buyer, ask how frequently you expect them to send you listings. Look at the agent’s work. The easiest and most valuable way is to review how they’re marketing other properties. Look at their listing materials, website, brochures and signage.
10 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
Pay attention to their personal appearance. Look for passion, conviction and honesty. Finally, whether you are buying or selling, determine if the realtor is honest and straight-forward about real estate market conditions. An agent who is more interested in telling you what you want to hear is not the best choice. This is one of those life situations when even if the truth hurts, you need to know. Local experience matters Check on the real estate agent’s experience, education, productivity and references. Accomplished agents know the market and the best strategies to sell your home. They should know the trends and be on top of all the latest market statistics. They should be there to guide you and offer recommendations when necessary. Ask a potential agent how many years they’ve been buying and selling homes, and what types of services they provide. Inquire about the basics, like average time
AT HOME
on the market for newly listed homes and average sale prices. Ask about their average list-price-to-sale-price ratio, as well as the amount of time it typically takes their clients to find and close on their new home. You’ll want to choose a real estate agent who has a proven track record of getting buyers into homes quickly at a good price. What your realtor does Your realtor wears many hats, as they have many roles to play, depending on whether they are representing you as the buyer’s agent or the seller’s agent. As a local expert, they look out for you, they can provide guidance on neighbourhoods that would be a good fit for you and your family. It’s their job to schedule showings, do research on different homes that are in your desired neighbourhoods, and maintain a list of professionals who they work with to help you throughout the home buying/selling process.

LETTER OF THE LAW Schuck Law Firm Carries on Horner Tradition 2021 has seen big changes for many of us, and this includes two Weyburn families – Don and Diane Horner, and Steve and Armanda Schuck.
D
on Horner joined Kim Thorson as a partner in the practice of law in 1998. Kim was the successor to George Hardy’s practice and George had been the successor to the MacDonald, Neville and Hardy practice of the 1960s. Together Kim and Don practiced under the name Thorson & Horner for nearly 15 years. In 2007 Diane joined the firm and soon became the office manager. When Kim retired at the end of 2012 at the age of 80, Don and Diane continued the business under the name Horner Law Office. In early 2021, with both of them approaching 70 years of age in May,
they decided that it would be a good time to retire and pass the long-time business onto another lawyer with a passion for law and for serving Weyburn and surrounding community. “We are fortunate to have worked in Weyburn, and we wanted to have a young lawyer pick up the mantle and carry on serving our many clients,” says Don. That wish was granted in the form of Steve and Armanda Schuck.

rooted deep in the law. Steve’s father Tom practiced law in Weyburn for over 40 years and brothers Joe and Mark also received law degrees. Steve attended the University of Saskatchewan, studying finance before earning his J.D. from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 2014. After finishing his law degree, Steve returned to his hometown to practice law. He and wife Armanda happily made their home in Weyburn and settled down to build their careers. In 2021, the opportunity to take over the Horners’ practice presented itself, and Steve and Armanda leaped at

the chance. “Don and Diane built an impressive firm here in Weyburn, and I am so happy to be able to carry on what they created,” says Steve.

Passing the Torch The transition began in April, with Don and Diane exiting into retirement at the end of June. The Horners are thrilled to see their legacy live on with the Schucks. “Weyburn is underserved when it comes to legal services,” says Don. “To have a lawyer want to practice in a more rural area is wonderful.” Diane echoes Don’s sentiments. “Our clients, past and present, are in fantastic hands with Steve and Armanda. We have no doubt Schuck Law Firm will provide the same quality, professional service they have come to expect,” says Diane. “From my career as a manager I recognize a great team dynamic and that is exactly what Don and Diane have built. The team at the firm are exceptional at what they do and the service they provide to clients. There is a personalized touch with each interaction. team and clients for years to come!” says Armanda.
The Practice Schuck Law Firm is a general legal practice, offering a diverse set of services to Weyburn and southeast Saskatchewan. Steve handles everything from simple legal transactions like property sales and wills to more complicated legal work like farm succession planning and the sale of businesses. He has experience in complex matters including corporate reorganizations and the sale and purchases of both assets and shares; large real estate transactions including farmland, and high-value estates and wills. Steve is well-versed in the legal needs of the southeast’s oil and gas sector, and has also earned his certification in Interdisciplinary Collaborative Law. “Whatever your civil, corporate or legal needs are, we can help,” says Steve.
Giving Back Like his predecessors Don and Diane and his family, Steve is also committed to his hometown. “My parents have

Steve is the current board chair for the Weyburn Group Home Society and chair of the Mental Health Review panel for Southeastern Saskatchewan. He also enjoys serving the business community as a vice-president on the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce Board. In his spare time, Steve coaches the 5- & 6-year-old Jiu jitsu classes at the Weyburn MMA Club Inc. and participates in the adult classes as well.
Big Change in a Small Package Not only have Steve and Armanda embraced their new roles as law firm owners, but they have also started another new job: first-time parents. They welcomed son Alexander Kristopher Schuck on June 1st, making 2021 a big year in more ways than one. “We are over the moon with our son Alexander. tarting (and completing) a home decorating or renovation project is right up there on the stress-o-meter with shopping for a new bathing suit. It can take forever, you’ll second-guess yourself, and there’s a good chance of your tears falling into a tub of ice cream. I know of what I speak, because I am in the middle of a major renovation and there are three kinds of ice cream in the freezer waiting for me. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. You can make your home reflect who you are, and you can do it without a breakdown.

you time, money and heartache because she knows what she’s doing. Kali can take your collection of ideas, hopes and dreams for your home and turn them into reality. Really. “You can’t do a million things. No one can,” says Kali. “You’re busy, and you need someone to ‘herd the cats’ and make your project come together. That’s what I am here for.” Kali can act as a general contractor for major projects, handle your interior decorating needs for a whole project or a single room, or be your personal shopper to tie it all together with some final touches or a simple refresh. Whatever your style, budget or project size, she will take care of it—and end the weepy tears over a bowl of Rocky Road.

Make a Connection
Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love. - Kali Holdstock
A Little Advice Before you start a project, Kali has some thoughts on what you should consider. First, think about how your ideas might impact the resale value of your home. “While your home dreams are important, you should also think about where to put your money to get the best bang for your buck,” she says. “You might love a bright red, diner-style backsplash for your kitchen, but if a home sale is eventually

HEALTH
Good Health is the Best Wealth
Boost your Immune System re you sick of talking about COVID-19? Yeah, me too. But I am going to do it briefly right now. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t had a cold, cough or sniffle since the pandemic hit, and that is likely due to all the handwashing, keeping my distance from people, and wearing a mask. Say what you will about our public health precautions, but they worked great for keeping all the bugs at bay. As we (hopefully) ease our way back to some sort of normal, our germ exposure is going to climb and those coughs, colds and flus are waiting to make their way into our noses, throats, lungs and stomachs. To which we say: NO THANKS. Luckily, besides keeping up with good hygiene and even wearing a mask on occasion where bugs lurk, we can do quite a few things to prevent getting sick.
Treat Yourself Right The biggest thing you can do to start helping your immune system is adopt a healthy lifestyle. We hear that all the time and it’s true. Your health will improve immensely with a few lifestyle changes that I am sure you already know, but are worth repeating again: • Quit smoking (or better yet, never start) • Eat your fruits and veggies (five a day will do wonders) • Get some exercise (more than once do it regularly)
22 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
HEALTH
• Drink alcohol in moderation (two drinks instead of six)
broom) and vitamins like Vitamin C which can help combat colds.
• Hit the hay (get enough sleep regularly)
Other things to augment your diet include healthy fats like olive oil, and probiotics from yogurt, kefir and kombucha. Also, get off the sugar. I know. It’s hard. I am a sugar junkie. But it’s worth it. Try to get down to two tablespoons per day. And, you might see the sugar reduction lead to a reduction on the scale too. Sugar consumption is linked to obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, which all weaken your immune system.
• Watch your weight (carrying around extra pounds is hard on your heart and your joints) • Cut the tension (reduce the stress in your life) Don’t just take our word for it—this advice comes straight from Dr. Suzanne Cassel, an immunologist at Cedars-Sinai, the Los Angeles-based academic healthcare organization and Harvard Health Publishing at Harvard University’s Medical School. We think they probably know what they’re talking about.
Speaking of Eating Right When you’re planning your menu, try to incorporate more whole plant foods into your diet. Fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes are full of good stuff for your immune system—and so many are grown right here. Throw chickpeas into a salad, add flax seed to your bread, and trade that sugary dessert for a big helping of fruit (Saskatoon berries? YES PLEASE). The benefits are fantastic, as many of these foods are chock full of antioxidants (great for combatting inflammation linked to heart disease and some cancers), fibre (nature’s

Move It Not only have researchers taken a deep dive into COVID-19 from a vaccine point of view, they have also looked at other factors that can help prevent infections. Did you know acute viral respiratory infections are the main infectious diseases in the world, even without a pandemic? A recent literature review published in Clinical and Experimental Medicine on how exercise can help the immune system found that “the practice of physical activities strengthens the immune system, suggesting a benefit in the response to viral communicable diseases. Thus, regular practice of adequate intensity is suggested as an auxiliary tool in strengthening and preparing the immune system for COVID-19.”

EXPERT ADVICE

BEST FRIENDS ARE THE ONES WITH PAWS Adding a New Pet to Your Life
W
hat an exciting time! A new pet is a wonderful addition to any family. There are many things you should consider when getting a new pet. Here are a few questions to ask yourself: • What type of pet am I looking for? • How much will it cost? • Who will take care of my pet? • Do I have time for another pet?
WHO’S THE BOSS
The excitement is extremely high when you bring your new puppy, kitten, hamster, or bunny home. That intense excitement fades over time, and the chores are not all that exciting. Discuss this with all family members so that everyone is onboard before choosing a new pet. Who will potty train your furry little family member? A puppy will need late night let outs and those accidents need to be cleaned up. If you are thinking of getting a mature pet, they also have daily needs. Who is going to feed and water them or take them for a walk? Who is going to take control of that pooper scooper, clean out the bunny cage, or change the litter boxes? STAY SAFE
It is important we keep our pets safe. Proper enclosures are a must when we are away. You do not want to come home to a chewed up electrical cord, shredded curtains, or an escaped puppy from the back yard. Are there any toxic
26 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
plants in the back yard or house plants that they may ingest? Puppies love to chew on EVERYTHING! If they can get a hold of it, they will chew it. PAY THE BILLS
Expenses: Budgeting for a new pet is also important. A pet has many expenses. Whether it is their daily food requirements, toys, treats or a trip to the vet clinic for their annual vaccines. Just like kids, some pets require a series of vaccines when they are young. These vaccines continue throughout their adult years. Unexpected costs may also arise from things like outgrowing their enclosure (or chewing their way out) and now they need a new enclosure. It is important to plan for unexpected veterinary expenses for sickness or any injuries. Pet insurance or a savings account for those daily or unexpected expenses is a sure way to alleviate the financial stress.
Do your research. There are many types and breeds of pets. You may be looking for a sweet, cuddly kitten to keep you company. Maybe you would like an energetic, athletic Labrador to join you for your daily jogs or to play catch with. Whatever furry, feathered or scaled pet you are looking for make sure it fits into your lifestyle. Locally owned and operated, Prairie Animal Health Centre is a full-service animal hospital that handles emergency and non-urgent medical, surgical, and dental issues for pets and large animals.
BEST BEHAVIOUR
Dogs require a minimum of basic training and children need to learn the basics of dog behavior. Puppies and kittens’ resort to biting and chewing and kids often play rough and tough. It is important that we teach or furry family members that playing never includes putting their teeth on human skin. DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Are you looking for a high energy companion or a low maintenance friend?

KNOW YOUR R-VALUE Energy Efficiency Makes Cents
Do you know what R-value is? It’s the measure of insulating material’s ability to resist heat travelling through it; with higher values representing better thermal performance. Your home’s R-value matters because it’s integral to its performance as a system—especially when to comes to heating and cooling. In Saskatchewan, as we all know, heating and cooling are incredibly important most months of the year. Energy efficiency might not be the sexiest home design trend, but it is one that directly impacts both your comfort and your wallet.

A
house operates as a system so all the elements of a house—the environment, envelope, mechanical systems, and occupant activities— affect each other, and the result affects the performance of the house as a whole. Making energy efficient upgrades can make the whole system work better.
Insulation Insulation acts as a barrier to heat gain and loss. This is particularly true in floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs. In most homes, insulation is the most cost effective and practical way to make your house energy efficient. By insulating your house, you’ll stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Insulation helps you save up to 40 per cent in cooling and heating bills. Moreover, it may reduce condensation at home. This goes miles in providing health benefits through a reduction in dampness and mold. Spray-foam insulation is made of plastic resin (think soy-based resins or resins made from recycled plastic) and a catalyst, which is prepared and applied on the job site. Whole house foam insulation costs a few thousand dollars and, as you would expect, is unlikely to help you make a killing on the local real estate market. However, targeted insulation projects that address specific issues with your property or help you to extend the usable living space by a considerable amount, could well net you a positive return when the time comes to sell up and move on.
Heating and Cooling Systems HVAC systems tend to represent the largest single category of energy end use in most homes. These projects can have significant expense savings as well— cutting heating bills by as much as half (depending on the unit selected and envelope and air tightness of the home). All systems have energy rating codes, which indicate their efficiency. Ask your
contractor to explain the difference in numbers. Contractors can now install hot water circulating loops that use a small pump to accelerate delivery of hot water to remote fixtures, which works great with low-flow fixtures.
Windows R-values are most commonly associated with wall insulation and if you think of it in that respect, better-insulated windows
As well, there are new insulation products on the market that can maximize your energy efficiency potential. Manitoba’s AMC Foam offers several options usable for both home renovations and new construction. The company’s Logix, Halo and Heat Sheet products are insulation solutions that can help maximize your home’s energy efficiency.

value of your home and make it more comfortable year-round. Plus, the federal government has recently announced the Canada Greener Homes Grant, offering homeowners up to $5,000 to make energy efficient upgrades. This, coupled with the provincial government’s Home Renovation Tax Credit, means now is the time to see what you can do to upgrade your home’s energy performance.
(higher R-values) slow the rate of heat transfer (heat resistance) through the window. The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance to heat and the better the insulating properties. In the winter, heat stays in and in the summer, heat stays out. Windows with higher R-values translate into: • Lower energy consumption in the home • Reduced solar heat gain • Consistent temperature uniformity and increased home comfort
Solar panels We can’t talk about energy-efficient home design without taking a look at solar panels. More homeowners are
adopting solar energy than ever before, and for good reason. As solar technology improves, many people are finding the benefits of solar panels are worth the investment. Solar panels are designed with one purpose in mind: to harness the power of the sun and create usable electricity. This means you can sit back and relax while the sun does the hard work for you. As solar panels become cheaper to make, homeowners are finding systems to be more affordable than ever before. The cost of installing a solar panel system depends on your utility’s policies, how much sunshine your home gets, and the size of system you purchase. As R-values go up, your costs go down. Energy-efficient upgrades will not only shrink your utility bill, but they can also increase the

If you’re considering building a new home, think about ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms). This new technology is revolutionizing building and is an excellent choice for both basements and above-grade walls. ICF combines insulating polystyrene with reinforced concrete into “building blocks” that are durable, moisture resistant, sound blocking and engineered to last. Plus, construction time is far less. “ICF offers a performance value of R40,” says Conrad Hoeppner, vice-president of sales at AMC Foam Technologies. “Regular ‘stick’ construction offers an R-value of R14 to 15. Compared to that, ICF’s insulating properties are outstanding.” ICF offers homeowners an excellent solution for basements and homes that can stand the test of time and our climate.
ICF Advantages
EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY LOGIX Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) gives you a wall system that’s not only long-lasting, quick to build, sound-proofed, energy-efficient and fire rated for up to 4 hours. Engineered for superior performance, LOGIX gives you more wall for your money.
BUILT TO LAST Buildings constructed with LOGIX are designed to last for centuries. LOGIX ICF walls conserve precious natural forest resources, and their energy efficiency reduces fuel consumption.

SUPERIOR SOUND INSULATION
KEEPS MOISTURE AND MOLD OUT
LOGIX walls offer you a quieter, more tranquil interior environment. A LOGIX wall can easily achieve a sound transmission twice as high as a typical wood-framed wall. Loud noises outside a LOGIX building will be reduced to a whisper inside.
ICF Walls don’t need an extra vapor barrier. For below-grade applications, LOGIX provides a waterproofing system that ensures a comfortably dry basement. Improved air quality is another benefit as LOGIX, it keeps moisture and mold out.

TAX ADVICE
GOOD ADVICE FOR BUSINESS To Incorporate or Not
P
roprietors and partners often ask if they should incorporate. Every situation is unique.
There are a few terms that you should be aware of: • Proprietorship/partnership – are businesses that are operated by an individual or several individuals and the net income is reported on personal tax return. • Corporation – is a business that has issued shares to its owners and there can be one or several shareholders. The net income is reported on a corporate income tax return. • Net income – this is your gross revenue less expenses incurred directly or indirectly to generate revenue. Proprietorship/Partnership – Reasons to Incorporate: • Year-end is required to follow the calendar year • You pay personal taxes on all net income earned which can create a tax burden each year • Your business activity is at high risk for lawsuits • You want a barrier between you and your personal assets • You no longer want to contribute to the Canada Pension Plan • Your lifestyle cash requirement is less than your business is generating • In most circumstances, corporate tax rates are lower than personal tax rates
L-R Chrisella Fesalbon, Kevin Agema, Aspen Joa, Taylor Culham, Nancy McMahon, Jenn Wagner, Mathew Malaschuk
• Greater estate planning options • Utilizing the capital gains exemption
Incorporation of Your business – Benefits: • Flexible year end – you can select any fiscal year end date • Limited liability – liability is limited to assets held within the corporation; your personal assets would not normally be at risk should the business fail to pay its debts. However, directors can be personally liable for certain corporate debts. • Tax savings and deferrals – the corporate tax rates for small businesses can be quite low when compared to personal tax rates. This provides an opportunity to defer taxes by leaving funds in the corporation. • You will only pay personal taxes on the amounts you withdraw from the corporation instead of paying personal tax rates on all net income • If you are building your business to sell, then the capital gains exemption may be utilized reducing personal taxes. • The corporation continues after the death of a shareholder and can be transferred to heirs or sold. Disadvantages of Incorporating Your Business • Professional fees are expensive – this includes incorporation costs, preparation of shareholder agreements, annual legal filings, accounting fees to file annual corporate income tax returns, and administrative burdens. • Losses are more difficult to use and cannot be applied against personal earnings.
BUSINESS
• There are some circumstances where more taxes are incurred through a corporation compared to a proprietorship/partnership. • Incorporation is for net income earned after incorporation and cannot reduce the tax burden that resulted from earning income as a proprietor/partner.
Summary If your net income is nominal or a loss, incorporation may not be for your business at this time. If your net income is more than your lifestyle requires, incorporation may be a benefit. You have more questions? The above is not all-inclusive, and every business situation is unique. If you have questions or concerns contact your Chartered Professional Accountant or legal counsel.

WHEN THE RUBBER HITS THE ROAD Advice For Your Tires
T
ires aren’t something we think much about until we need to replace them. Kal Tire has some advice that you need to think about when it comes to your vehicle’s tires and their performance.
The Differences The rubber compound of winter tires has been designed to stay soft and provide grip at temperatures of +7°C and below. All-season and summer tires have a harder compound that provides a better grip at temperatures above +7°C. This means you have to change your tires with the seasons.
Winter Year-Round Winter tires are designed for use in one season: winter. Though using 3-seasons in the winter could be more harmful than if you were to use winter tires year-round, if you drive your winters in warm months, you’ll sacrifice performance, fuel economy, and your tires’ lifespan. The good news is, there is a dedicated winter tire that doubles as a summer tire. It’s called the all-weather tire, but we’ll get to that in a moment. For now, why shouldn’t you drive winter tires in the summer? Winter tires use a more aggressive tread pattern that grips onto ice and snow and
44 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
pushes away slush, while 3-season (allseason) and summer tires have a finer tread that grips pavement in warm and dry as well as in mild, wet conditions. Using winter tires year-round can lead to faster and/or uneven wear because on warm and hot road surfaces, a winter tire’s rubber compound wears quickly and more unevenly. Winter tires are meant to last two-to-three seasons, but when they’re mounted on a vehicle for 12 months consecutively, they need to be replaced sooner. Winter tires aren’t designed for performance on dry or wet pavement. Designed to give superior traction on ice and snow, winter tires lose their handling ability when driven on dry or wet roads. The softer, squishier compound of a winter tire decreases maneuvering and braking response in warmer weather and can cause excessive noise when driven on dry pavement. Finally, winter tires in summer decrease your fuel economy. The rolling resistance caused by driving winter tires in the off-season also translates to spending more at the pump. Summer tires have a harder compound that makes them roll smoothly, and that means more fuel savings.
However, while all-weather tires are safe to drive in most winter conditions, if you live in an area where you consistently face heavy, hard-packed snow and ice, including black ice, winter tires will provide the braking and cornering grip you need.
Learn More Want to know more about tires and what your vehicle needs? More than just tires, Weyburn Kal Tire are the experts in Brakes and Front ends with three Journeyman Red Seal Auto Technicians to look after all your mechanical needs.
All-Weather All Year If you only have the budget for one set of tires to use throughout the year, one solution is to look for all-weather tires. Nokian all-weather tires are designated with reliable grip and stability that can be driven in both the colder and warmer months.

Freshen Up Your Space By Kiteen Mainil
This article is a little different from my usual fashion-focused content, but spring to me means a time of renewal. What better way to showcase that than with a recent home refresh?! If you have a dark and dingy space in your home, now is the perfect time to freshen it up! 46 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

O
ur living room was that space for me. You all know how much I love incorporating earth tones into my outfits. Turns out I also could not stop incorporating them into our living room as well! Our space was full of dark brown tones. Dark wood floors, dark brown trim and dark brown furniture and décor. It was just too much…brown. Let me share with you a few things that made a big impact when it came to refreshing our living room! The first thing I did was contact The Willow Branch about painting our walls. It’s incredible what a fresh coat of paint can do! It instantly lightened and brightened the vibe in our living room. I regret not doing this years ago. Please don’t be like me— stop waiting and freshen up your walls! You won’t regret it.

The next thing I did was partner with an interior designer. I know what looks good and goes together when it comes to clothing, but I struggle when it comes to visualizing how to style spaces in my home. This step may not be necessary for everyone, but Citizen Design Co. helped me so much with the overall design and vibe of our refresh. They were my sounding board for all the design and décor questions I had. From recommending the pendant and dining room lighting, explaining why a larger area rug works better in my space, to how to properly hang my drapes—they were a huge reason our refresh turned out so well! Speaking of lighting, changing up your kitchen, island, or entry lighting is one way to instantly refresh your space as well. Try swapping out some of your darker pendants for glass or lighter pendants. Something we also did was change the lightbulbs from a warmer tone to cooler—talk about an instant room brightener! Last but not least, consider swapping out some of your winter décor for items in bright, fresh summer colours! Bonus points if you can incorporate fresh flowers into your décor. I recently bought a bright mustard yellow vase to add to our coffee table basket, as well as some faux eucalyptus garland for our mantel. These small changes really can make a big impact and refresh your space!

PERMANENT MAKEUP What You Need to Know
C
onsidering permanent makeup? Have some questions? Beautiforever PMU has answers.
Q: Is permanent makeup different from semi-permanent makeup? And is permanent makeup REALLY permanent? A: Permanent and semi-permanent makeup are the same thing. They’re just called different things by different artists. Technically, permanent makeup CAN last forever and can make a permanent change to your look. Most liability insurance companies that insure permanent makeup artists will require the artist to call it permanent makeup.
environment, aftercare, skin products used, other treatments you get, age of the client, skin type of the client and more. For example, if you are a person who exfoliates daily, you will fade your permanent makeup faster than someone who doesn’t. If you work outdoors in the sun, wind, rain, and other elements, your permanent makeup will fade faster than someone who works indoors. If you are a younger client in your 20s, you usually have a faster cell turnover rate than a client in their 60s and your permanent makeup will fade faster. Anti-aging skin care products usually contain things like retinols, AHAs and BHAs. Thease are all chemical exfoliators that increase cell turnover which will, in turn, fade your permanent makeup more quickly. Skin type is another huge one. People with oily skin tend not to hold pigment well for long and usually require more upkeep than someone with dry skin. When it comes to a procedure like eyeliner, wearing eye makeup, sleeping on your face, rubbing your eyes, or not wearing sunglasses, may fade your your eyeliner tattoo more quickly. Q: Will I need touch-ups, and if so, how many? A: Micropigmentation is an investment because nothing lasts forever. Typically, clients need their initial appointment, and then a touchup four to eight weeks
later. In rare cases, a third appointment might be necessary. From there, refresh appointments need to be done once a year to maintain the look, but some people will be able to go 18 months to three years without needing a refresh. Everyone is different. Q: Does permanent makeup hurt? A: At the most, mild discomfort can be expected. Most clients do not feel any pain or discomfort, and some even fall asleep. A topical 5% Lidocaine is applied to numb the area before hand, and a secondary numbing is used throughout the procedure. Q: How long does an appointment take? A: Appointments take between one to three hours. Touchups are around one to one and a half hours and initial appointments range from two to three hours. Most of the appointment time is spent on prep and mapping. Q: How do you determine the shape or color for my permanent makeup? A: There are many factors that lead me and my client to a mutual decision when it comes to shape and colour of pigment used. I am an expert when it comes to choosing a shape and color for your treatment. However, I make sure my client is heavily involved in my choices and we agree on everything together.
Permanent makeup is like a tattoo in the process, but it does not go as deep into the skin. Artists use semi-permanent pigments and not inks, hence why it doesn’t usually last forever and is therefore, commonly referred to as semi-permanent. Permanent makeup is intended to be semi-permanent. Q: How long do results last? A: The short answer is six months to five years. It’s typically about one year and I recommend annual touchups. The long answer is final finished results will last differently for everyone. Factors that determine the longevity of your permanent makeup include:

Nano brows
This is my work, but it is your face. I use a mapping string for eyebrows to achieve the most precise and balanced brows as well as factoring in things like face size, shape, bone structure, and other facial features. For colour I ask your preference and when possible, I ask you to bring in your brow product for me to see and do a swatch. When we think we have chosen the correct color of pigment I do a swatch on your forehead. This shows what the color will look like on your skin, keeping in mind that it will heal lighter. For a first-time client who is nervous about change, I usually go thinner and lighter at the first appointment because you can always go thicker and darker later. Eyeliner and lips are a little simpler. For eyeliner, I ask you what you like in terms of color, thickness, shape etc. When it comes to lips, I work within your vermillion border as much as possible to enhance your current shape (I cannot make your lips bigger) and we choose a colour together.

Also, there is the rare chance that you get an infection post-procedure and need to be put on antibiotics—compromising your health for something that could have waited. some don’t care what they look like while they are healing and go back to work the next day. Someone who does not work in close quarters with the public and has a job that doesn’t require vigorous activity usually choose to go back to work the next day.
Q: What is the downtime like for permanent makeup? A: You may have mild swelling and redness. The pigment will be much, much darker than the eventual healed result for up to 10 days. No makeup is to be worn in the area until completely healed. Some discomfort may occur until it is healed and can be combatted with Advil, Tylenol or a cold compress. Some people who work closely with the public will chose to have their procedure done on the day before their weekend, some choose to take a week off work, and
Q: Can I get permanent makeup while I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
