Attention Homeowners: Imagine a durable, versatile and attractive patio cover. One that delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm. Suncoast Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Our built-in guttering system effectively channels away rain runoff to prevent flooding and structural damage. The louvers are charged by an efficient solar panel and are operated by a hand-held remote. Open the louvers slightly to increase ventilation or up to a full 180 degrees to allow you to control the amount of sunlight or shade on your patio. Suncoast Enclosures offers a screened-in, outdoor area that allows you to enjoy your deck, pool, spa or patio without the sense of being enclosed in an indoor space.

YOUR HEALTH

Foods for Less Stress In today’s world, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. We are constantly rushing here and there, trying to get as much done in as little time as possible. The pressure to perform well in every area of life is great so it is little wonder that many of us experience anxiety and stress on a daily basis. Too much stress, however, can be detrimental to your health. So, it is important to keep stress to a minimum. Here are ten food which can help to lower your anxiety levels.

By Tonya Lambert

1 | Leafy Green Vegetables Dark green vegetables like spinach and asparagus are high in folic acid which is needed to regulate mood. They also contain magnesium which aids in lowering C-reactive protein levels that make you more susceptible to stress.

2 | Salmon When you are anxious, your body releases a burst of adrenaline in a flight-or-fight response. The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA found in salmon prevents this sharp spike of adrenaline from occurring.

YOUR HEALTH

3 | Blueberries All berries are a good source of antioxidants and Vitamin C, which combats stress. Blueberries, however, are the best at lessening anxiety. The antioxidant contained in blueberries is anthocyanin. This encourages the production of dopamine in the brain which helps to improve your mood.

4 | Cashews Low levels of zinc can lead to feelings of anxiety. Cashews are a great source of zinc. It is important to replenish your zinc daily as the body is unable to store it. Cashews also contain omega-3 and protein for heart health and less stress.

5 | Pistachios Like most nuts, pistachios contain antioxidants which help to combat stress and anxiety. Eating pistachios dilates your arteries lowering your blood pressure and heart rate thereby helping to maintain calm.

6 | Turkey Ever feasted on a delicious turkey dinner at Thanksgiving or Christmas and then felt really relaxed afterward? This is because turkey is rich in tryptophan, an amino acid which directs the brain to release serotonin. This causes a calming effect.

7 | Oysters Like cashew nuts, oysters contain a lot of zinc which reduces stress and anxiety. Indeed, eating six oysters will give you half of your recommended daily amount of zinc.

8 | Oatmeal Oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate that directs the brain to release serotonin. To make the calm feeling this produces last longer, eat cooked oatmeal rather than instant oatmeal. It contains more fiber and, thus, takes longer to digest.

9 | Dark Chocolate Full of antioxidants, dark chocolate is wonderful for lowering stress levels. It causes the release of more endorphins for a feel-good feeling than any other food. The anandamide in it suppresses feelings of pain and depression. Dark chocolate also lowers blood pressure and increases resistance to oxidative stress.

YOUR HEALTH

10 | Milk A warm glass of milk at night can make a person feel sleepy. Drinking milk at any time of the day, though, will have a calming effect due to the tryptophan, antioxidants, vitamins B2 and B12 in it. It also has the protein lactium which lowers blood pressure and vitamin D which elevates your mood.

Stress Less

NOW

IN SMALL AMOUNTS, stress is a natural and even beneficial part of life. When you are faced with a stressful situation, your body enters ‘flight-or-fight’ mode. The adrenal glands release the stress hormones adrenaline, cortisol and corticosterone. Energy levels and mental acuity increase to meet the impending threat. This is very helpful. It enables you to deal with a difficult situation. HOWEVER, PROBLEMS ARISE when a person’s stress levels are constantly elevated, an all-too-familiar aspect of life in the 21st century. Prolonged stress can play havoc with the body’s immune system and metabolism and can increase inflammation. This can lead to anxiety, depression or illness, including autoimmune diseases. ADAPTOGENIC HERBS aid the body in combatting the effects of constant stress. Herbs like ashwaganda, rhodiola and holy basil support the adrenal glands and endocrine systems, helping to decrease the levels of stress hormones in the body. ASHWAGANDA AND HOLY BASIL have a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine while rhodiola has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and the countries of Scandinavia for many centuries. Ashwaganda and rhodiola are used to alleviate fatigue and increase attention span and memory. All three herbs have significant anti-anxiety and anti-depressant properties. Ashwaganda does this by lowering cortisol levels, holy basil by lowering corticosterone. Rhodiola facilitates the transmission of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.

Centered Physiotherapy & Yoga:

Helping People Heal By Tonya Lambert Photos by Images by Gillies

“G

rowing up, I always knew that I wanted to be involved in the medical field in some way. I wanted to be able to help people dealing with injury,” explains Susan Fleck, BScPT, owner of Centered Physiotherapy & Yoga. “Physiotherapy was a way for me to help people heal and get back to their lives. I

refer to what I do as manual therapy to the musculoskeletal system and to the nervous system.” Physiotherapists are licensed and trained medical professionals who use a combination of manual manipulation, heat, massage and exercise programs to help heal their patients. Physiotherapy is used to decrease or even eliminate pain

YOUR HEALTH

and to increase joint mobility, strength and coordination. “I came to Susan after having shoulder pain for over a year and pursuing multiple avenues for relief,” says Laura Eddy. “Susan was able to assess me and start a treatment program that not only relieved the symptoms but have made them nonexistent.”

“Susan is a true professional in guiding me along my yoga journey. At Centered, I am learning to be selfaware and focused. At the end of each class, I feel renewed and awake. Centered is my happy place!” - Ashley Barscht

“Yoga with Susan is challenging, relaxing and fun! The classes vary every week keeping it interesting and stretching different parts of the body. Susan’s physiotherapy knowledge is a huge bonus as she can alter poses for each person so that everyone can be successful! I always feel great after every class!” - Tammy Grieve

Physiotherapists can help patients with a wide range of medical concerns. Says Fleck, “I treat everything from problems with jaws to migraine headaches to neck and lower back pain to arthritis to issues with shoulders as well as even some neurological conditions, such as MS and Parkinson’s.” Fleck has pursued extra training as a physiotherapist in order to provide more specialized care for those in need. She has special training in vestibular rehabilitation (i.e. treating people living with dizziness and vertigo) as well as in the treatment of pelvic floor pain and urinary incontinence in both men and women. “Two-thirds of women and one-third of men with lower back pain also have a pelvic floor insufficiency or compromise that needs to be dealt with and is often contributing to their lower back pain,” explains Fleck. “This is an area of treatment that is gaining popularity in Western medicine so most people don’t realize that instead of going for that bladder lift, they should try Physiotherapy first” It was Fleck’s lifelong desire to help people in pain that led her to become a yoga instructor. A long-time practitioner herself, she attended a class on treating chronic pain with yoga and knew immediately that this would be a huge benefit to her patients. Since she began teaching last summer, Fleck has found

many ways to incorporate her training in yoga into her physiotherapy treatments and vice versa. “I use a lot of the concepts of yoga in my physiotherapy treatments, especially for people who are dealing with chronic illness, such as persistent pain or fibromyalgia or chronic neurological conditions. Yoga lends itself really well to this as it challenges people’s balance as well as strength. It’s a very functional practice so it is easily applied to everyday life. As well, the mental practices that go with yoga, like meditation and body awareness, help people to get past their injuries or live with their chronic illness in a better way.”

Physiotherapy appointments can be made online, in person or by phone. Yoga classes are drop-in: Mondays 6:30am Tuesdays 12:00 noon & 7:00pm Thursdays at 12:00 noon

e all know that what we eat affects our health and wellbeing from before birth to the golden years. This also applies to our pets. One food does not fit all ages and stages. Our veterinary clinic is a trusted source of information regarding your pet. Our vet will perform a complete physical exam, collect history and do tests to identify any health issues. Based on this and their knowledge of the life stages and diseases of different animals, our vet will make specific recommendations for your pet. Several pet food companies provide nutritional solutions to meet the specific requirements of an individual pet. These innovative and precisely-balanced diets are the result of ongoing scientific research into ensuring outstanding pet nutrition. Our goal is to provide optimal health from the moment you pick that precious new addition to your family until you must say those very difficult goodbyes. The impact the “right diet” can make on a pet’s health and longevity is no longer overlooked by veterinary professionals or owners. However, with hundreds of options, pet nutrition can be confusing and overwhelming. Our goal is to educate and guide pet owners through the many myths and facts regarding pet food.

Nutritional Facts 1. Corn Myth: Corn is a filler and is not digestible Fact: Corn contains valuable nutrients antioxidants, vitamin A and B, selenium, zinc, the amino acids cysteine and methionine and fatty acids - that support the skin and coat. Grinding corn breaks the hulls, increasing digestibility which allows access to the fat, carbohydrates, and proteins. 2. Grains Myth: Grains are too high carbohydrates and cause allergies

5. Veterinary Diets are more expensive Myth: All veterinary diets are more expensive Fact: When we work out cost per day, most life stage diets work out to cost less per day. Don’t underestimate the impact your pet’s diet can make in their lives and yours!

Fact: Carbohydrates are a source of energy in the diet. Companies may use grain, fruits, legumes or vegetables as a carbohydrate source in pet food. Not only do pets need carbohydrates, they also are required for kibble structure. Food allergies to grains do occur but less than commonly perceived. Most food allergies are caused by the meat protein in the diet; rarely is the grain the source of the allergy. 3. Raw & Homemade Myth: Easy to Balance and Safe Fact: In a 2013 study, 200 home-prepared recipes were analysed and 95 percent were found to be deficient in at least one essential nutrient. After months of covering up for cold weather — wearing scarves, toques, mitts and winter boots — we are more than ready for longer days and warmer nights, daffodils and crocuses. Now is the perfect time to get your body, and your wardrobe, prepared for spring.

or starters, grab a girlfriend and plan a spa date. A girls’ day at the spa is a wonderful treat to reawaken your body and mind. Start with a facial to replenish the moisture in your skin after the long dry winter. Next, arrange for a manicure and try something different — a French or a splash of neon as a highlight or background for embellishments. Other popular colours for the season include taupe, grey, or white, but you may want to add a bright pop to a tried and true colour, or finish with a glitter topcoat. Your feet will thank you if you opt for a pedicure as well! It won’t be long before your boots are in the closet and your sandals are waiting, so why not put your pretty feet into some new shoes. Platforms, on just about any style shoe, will be all the rage this spring. They will be colourful and creative, studded and patterned. Even sneakers will have emojis or logos on them. Feminine finishes

such as wraps and straps on flats and heels will be popular, and mules in every fabrication and colour will continue to be big this season. Most of us can’t imagine sporting a Paris runway outfit, but it is fun to see what fashions the designers are showcasing for this season. You might wonder how you can incorporate something new and exciting into your wardrobe. It’s not as difficult as you might think. Bold candy pinks and sunshine yellows are in, as well as metallic, floral prints, and stripes in every size and colour. Khaki and blue (in any shade) will become the new black. Statement making slogans will appear on tees and dresses. Eighties trends are back with neon, strong shoulders, voluminous sleeves and ruffles. Denim will come out with attitude, including a resurgence of white denim. Every outfit can be complemented with over-thetop ear candy or long pendants. Add a little carry case — a mini purse just big

STYLE & BEAUTY

enough to hold your daily essentials and beloved device. Speaking of your cell … scheduling an appointment at your salon is also a must. Not only do you need a little counseling to get through the last weeks of winter, but also spring is a great time for a fresh look. Colour trends to consider include chocolate browns, strawberry blondes, reds, burnt caramel, and one-tone honey blondes. Highlights will be less obvious and an overdose of texture and shine abounds. Super sleek, flat iron waves, and the high ponytail will be popular. Stepping out with a new cut and colour will have you abandoning your winter hat. Now there might be another few weeks of hockey practices in cold arenas, but take some time over the next few weeks to begin your own transformation for spring. Investing in yourself will soothe your soul and put that much needed “spring” back in your step.

FORTUNATE ONES

F

ortunate Ones are an awardwinning folk-pop duo from Newfoundland. Recipients of a Canadian Folk Music Award, the duo includes Andrew James O’Brien, singer/guitarist, and Catherine Allan, singer/pianist/accordion player. The name of this duo, “Fortunate Ones,” came from their personal feelings of being fortunate to pursue their own dreams. Their name reflects shared experiences with audiences. It’s about connecting with all kinds of people, making strangers friends, evoking feelings of joy, hope, sadness and contemplation – and about the basic feeling that we are all in this together.

Andrew and Catherine’s ability to blend acoustic folk and pop, plus their musical roots are earning them significant critical and popular praise. Bare-bones arrangements and delicate quietlyassured harmonies make their live shows endearing and memorable. They perform with the open-heartedness of two people who live the songs that they sing. The vulnerability and closeness between Andrew and Catherine is palpable on stage during each and every performance, also making the audience the ‘fortunate ones’. The Fortunate Ones will be performing at the Cugnet Centre on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.

JAKE’S GIFT

I

t has been said that, “the only two things that can satisfy the soul are a person and a story.”

Julia Mackey is just such a person with an incredible story to share…Jake’s Gift. Accolades from critics suggest that Jake’s Gift is one of the most theatricallypure shows available to audiences. Mackey, the writer and sole performer of this production, transforms seamlessly between a ten-year-old girl and an eightyyear-old man…a feat all unto itself. Jake’s Gift is a surprisingly funny drama that tells the story of a Canadian WWII veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of

D-Day. While roaming the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious ten-year-old from the local village. Her inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts, most notably, the wartime death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. Since 2007, Juno Productions has toured this multi-award winning play to more than 215 communities across Canada, including international stops in the USA, UK and Normandy for the 70th Anniversary of D-Day.

JACK SEMPLE – BB KING TRIBUTE

J

ack Semple has rural roots, growing up on a farm north of Regina. He began his musical career playing with a number of Regina-based bands. In the late 80’s, Semple was drawn down east, to Toronto specifically, where he became the lead guitarist of The Lincolns, a popular funk, rhythm and blues band. Two years into it, Semple felt the need to return to the prairies. Regina was home, more time with family was critical, and time to pursue a solo career was his objective. His excellence and passion as a musician continues. Over the years, Semple has built quite the reputation for himself in Canada. He has been nominated twice for a Gemini Award. In 1991, he won a Juno Award

for Best Roots Recording. His albums Qu’Appelle and In the Blue Light have both won Western Canadian Music Awards, with In the Blue Light winning Blues Album of the Year. His tribute to the great B.B. King is a labour of love! Jack Semple exclaims, “In my opinion, B.B. King was the greatest electric blues guitarists of all time! His ability to communicate emotionally with the audience through his guitar was unparalleled. I met him in 1995 and, unlike other superstars, found him to be humble, patient and empathetic, and his generosity was overwhelming. I try to follow his lead.” Jack Semple and his BB King Tribute will be our last performance of this current

100 Anniversary th

of The Battle of Vimy Ridge

V

imy Ridge is an escarpment northeast of Arras, France. It is approximately four miles in length and rises gradually on the western side and drops quickly on the eastern side. With an elevation of 476 feet, it was a desirable spot to be in to observe movement in any direction, and, in April 1917, the Germans occupied this territory. This was to be the target of the Allied troops during the First World War.

28

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

The Battle of Vimy Ridge began at 5:30am April 9, 1917, with 170,000 men, of which 97,184 were Canadian. For the first time, the four divisions of the Canadian Corp were fighting together under the command of Major General Arthur Currie, 1st Canadian Division. Currie was one of several commanders that compiled the tactical plan that would involve the full Canadian Corp with support from the British 5th Infantry

Division, supplementary artillery, engineering and labour units in this battle. The conflict lasted until April 12,1917, with the Canadian Corp firmly in control of the ridge. There were 10,602 casualties with 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded. Among the casualties were several men from the Weyburn area: William Barrett, farmer; Joseph Basaraba, labourer; Wesley John Bell worked the CPR; William Boblo, farmer; Stephen Charles

Coram, bookkeeper; Thomas Dickie, carpenter; Wellington Gray, labourer; Lee Marvin Hart, realtor; Thomas Michael Hoban, railwayman; John McDonald (McGillivray), labourer; John Alexander Mitchell, farmed in the Colgate area with his father; William Percy Thompson, school teacher. These men were buried in France, some at the same cemetery and some at different cemeteries. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was of significance to Canadians because this was the first time the four divisions of the Canadian Corp had fought together and also because they were commanded by a Canadian. Years later, many of the soldiers believe that this was a defining moment for Canada. Soldiers from across the country fought as a whole and were united as a whole. They became patriotic.

In 1922, following the war, France granted Canada perpetual use of a section of land (250 acres) for a battlefield and monument to the fallen soldiers. The Canadian Vimy Memorial is Canada’s largest and principal overseas memorial located on the highest point of Vimy Ridge. The battlefield contains remnants of wartime tunnels, trenches, craters and unexploded munitions. The battlefield surrounds the Vimy Memorial and is closed to the public due to safety concerns. The memorial was designed by Canadian architect Walter Allward. It took eleven years to construct and cost $1.5 million and was unveiled in 1936 by King Edward VIII. Since that time, thousands of people have stopped to pay their respects to the fallen. It was rededicated on April 9, 2007, by Queen Elizabeth II following several years of repairs and renovations to the memorial.

Early spring may seem like an odd time to be thinking about home renovations, especially exterior ones, but it is actually the best time to do so. Why? It ensures that everything is ready to go as soon as the snow melts, and an early start means an early finish. No one wants to still be doing renovations when summer holidays come around.

P

lanning your renovation project early helps to chase away the winter blues. It allows you the time to properly plan, from choosing the project that’s right to finding the best contractor for the job. If you wait till spring to start looking for a contractor, you may find that the one you want is already busy, resulting in unnecessary and frustrating delays.

Picking a Project We all have a wish list of renovations that we would like to do to our home. It would be nice if we could to do them all at once but, for most people, time and budget constraints mean that choices must be made. How do you decide? Renovations can range from cosmetic upgrades to structural changes. They can vary greatly in terms of cost, time and inconvenience. Sit down and put together a budget. How much money is available for renovations? What are your plans for the spring and summer that restrict the amount of time you have to complete the project? There are many reason for undertaking renovations. Is a project a necessity or a wish? Prioritize necessary repairs over desires. Consider renovations that will make your home more energy efficient, such an installing energy-efficient windows or a high-efficiency furnance. This will save you money in the long term

meaning that you will be able to afford to get that steam shower or outdoor kitchen sooner.

it require a general contractor or a more specialized tradesperson? Perhaps you plan to do the work yourself?

How will the renovation affect your daily life? Will it lift your spirits and make you more comfortable? Will the outcome be worth the cost or is there another way to get the same effect for less?

When hiring someone, shop around. Get three quotes. Ask for references and then call them. When you find the person you want, get an agreement in writing. Include a list of materials and brands, the work to be completed, a schedule, permit obligations, payment plan and warranty. Discuss how changes to the plans will be handled and ensure that the contractor carries insurance.

Perhaps you are planning to sell soon and want to add value to your home. If that is the case, consider kitchen and bathroom remodels as these give you the greatest return on your investment.

Making It a Reality Once you have picked your project, you need to decide who will complete it. Does

Chad Bailey: CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNITY By Tonya Lambert Photos by Images by Gillies

I

t goes without saying that all real estate agents know houses, but few know houses as well as Chad Bailey does. An agent with RE/MAX Weyburn Realty 2011 since 2015, Bailey worked for many years in the construction industry in the city. “Some of the houses I’m selling I helped to build!” he exclaims. A Construction Background Working in the construction industry, Bailey gained an in-depth understanding of the inner workings of buildings, from the framework to the plumbing and electrical to the cosmetics. With this experience, Bailey is easily able to determine the strengths of a property as

40

well as its shortcomings in addition to being able to estimate the longevity of a building. Bailey, then, uses this information to assist his clients. He advises sellers on how to add the most value to their homes and gives buyers a comprehensive view of potential properties, ensuring they are purchasing a structurally-sound home. For buyers or sellers wishing to renovate a property, Bailey is also able to direct them to the contractors and tradespeople who can do the work for them. “With my construction background, if a buyer is looking to flip or renovate something, I can give them ideas on what

they can and cannot do based on the structure of the home,” explains Bailey. “I can also give buyers a good head’s up of what they are walking into, such as any persistent problems with a house they are looking at.” Community Contacts In addition to his extensive understanding of construction, Bailey also knows the community very well. Born and raised in Weyburn, he has lived and worked in the area all his life. For ten years, Bailey served as a city police officer, a role which gave him a thorough knowledge of the community and its residents.

Chad Bailey

“Weyburn is a big enough town that it has everything you need, but small enough to be a nice, safe community to raise a family,” says Bailey of his hometown. Bailey’s network of contacts within the community is far-reaching. Acquired through his many years of living, working and volunteering in the city. When he isn’t showing properties, Bailey can often be found at the arena coaching his stepsons’ hockey teams. He is also an active member of the Young Fellows Club of Weyburn. Bailey’s wide-ranging web of contacts is invaluable when buying and selling property, whether residential, commercial

or agricultural. Combine these community contacts with RE/MAX’s unparalleled reach into markets across the country and around the world and you know your property is reaching the maximum number of potential buyers.

“It was a wonderful experience from start to finish.”

“RE/MAX is the most well-known real estate company in the world,” explains Bailey. “Being an international firm, we can advertise anywhere in the world for prospective buyers.” “If you want a high degree of professionalism, trust, and competence when making the biggest purchase of your life, then Chad Bailey is your ticket,” state Jeff Hayward and Alexandra Buss.

Succulents

Changing the shape of Prairie Gardens

A

lthough trends come and go in the plant design world, the trend of succulents is here to stay. The name is Latin for sucus, which means juice or sap. About 60 different plant families contain succulents, which are also referred to as water storage plants (parts of the plant are thick and fleshy, allowing them to retain water in dry climates or soil conditions). Originating from Mexico, Africa and California, most varieties need subtropical temperatures to survive the winter. In the prairies, Sempervivum (the hens and chickens plant), Sedum (stonecrops) and other hardy succulents will surprise you; not only because they’re so beautiful, but because they will survive in really harsh situations, and come back every year, even after a never-ending Saskatchewan winter.

is to not overwater. For people wondering why they can’t keep their succulents thriving, here are some tips: •

Don’t allow the soil to remain soaking wet. Add a medium amount of water when soil is dry to the touch. Do not let the soil become so dry that it cracks and shrinks

Maintain bright to full sun exposure

During the active growing season, add all-purpose plant food at least once a week

Succulents thrive on a little bit of abuse, so a green thumb is not necessary to add these beauties to your yard. They prefer day humidity so the trick

Due to the abundance of textures, colours and growth habits, succulents truly love to be paired with other varieties in their family to produce an amazing display. Instead of always focusing on having a variety of colour, look for green succulents in a variety of shapes to provide contrast. When putting together succulent arrangements, always read the labels on individual plants and understand the plants growing habits. Combining several varieties in a container means

you must be aware of which ones will be tall, short or trailing, as well as what varieties develop faster and slower, in order to create a proper balance and achieve a perfect end result. Succulents will grow faster and bigger when given a larger container. However, most varieties when planted in a small container or planted very close to other plants will remain quite small due to limited growth space. Maximizing on the growth habits helps you achieve

a stunning cluster combination look in a wreath, table centerpiece, urn or bowl. Succulents are normally quite disease resistant but when moved indoors prior to winter, aphids can become a concern. They are easy to treat with

a simple soap and water mixture in a spray bottle. Any level of gardener, regardless of experience, can enjoy the satisfaction of growing plants in the succulent family. This season, experiment and see how much fun growwing succulents can be.

Fletcher Funeral Chapel Caring for the Community for 25 Years By Tonya Lambert Photos by Vanessa Lanktree

F

or 25 years, Fletcher Funeral Chapel Ltd has been providing comfort and guidance to the people of Weyburn and area during some of their darkest hours. Over the years, the style and type of services have changed as people’s wishes and the funeral profession has evolved, but the deep level of care and competent service has remained the same throughout.

A Traditional of Trust “We have staff members who have been employed here and serving the community since the beginning,” says Tamara Seghers, funeral director, embalmer and general manager. “One such individual is Mel Van de Sype, a

funeral director, who is in his 80s and keeps working because of his desire to help his friends and neighbours.” Since Fletcher Funeral Chapel first opened under the management of Myron Fletcher in 1992, its core principles have been care and compassion, reliability and trust. It is critical that when people turn to you for help in their hour of need, when their world has been shattered and they are in a state of grief and shock, they know that they can trust you to be the guiding hand that they need – no matter the time of day or night. For 25 years, the people of Weyburn have been able to rely upon the funeral directors and staff at Fletcher Funeral Chapel to provide that support.

“Guiding families through the funeral arrangements is very important,” says Tamara. “I’ve had many families sit across the table from me shaken with grief, having no idea where to begin. There is a lot to think about, and my staff and I do our best to help families deal with their grief and put together a meaningful, memorable service for their loved one.”

Connected to the Community One of the key reasons why Fletcher Funeral Chapel has been able to successfully help so many local families over the past 25 years is the connections that every person on staff has with the community. Deeply dedicated to the

people of Weyburn, Fletcher Funeral Chapel is a member of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce and proudly supports community events in and around Weyburn, including dinner theatres, golf tournaments, rodeos and the Festival of Trees. Every year, the staff lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day Service. Staff members Tamara Seghers, John Tuchscherer, Roger Lenz, Cecile Sellinger, Mel Van de Sype, Donald Wiberg, Morley Orsted, Jim St. Onge, Ron Klein, Rick Moser and Frank Porte are proud to call Weyburn their home and most have done so for their entire life. Many of the staff members, past and present, have roots

in Weyburn and the surrounding area that go back several generations. They have attended school here and are raising their families here. Many are active in the Knights of Columbus, the Rotary Club and the Royal Canadian Legion. Tamara herself has spent most of her life in Weyburn, graduating from Weyburn Comprehensive in 2001. After spending a few years in Alberta, where she trained as a funeral director and embalmer at Mount Royal College in Calgary and then worked for two years at the Martin Brothers Funeral Home in Lethbridge, she returned to Weyburn to work, marry and have a family. Today, Tamara, her husband Steve, and their three children – Samara (7),

Titan (5) and Suri (2) – are very active members of the community, involved in hockey, ball, soccer and Ukrainian dance.

Exceptional Care When her brother-in-law died, Tamara struggled with her profession. “The experience completely rocked our family. Never before had I known what it was like to be a grieving family member even though I had been a funeral director for ten years. That experience really opened my eyes to the grief families are experiencing and I feel it has made me a better funeral director and able to sympathize and empathize with people on a much deeper level having been through it myself.”

EXPERT ADVICE LEGAL CORNER

DEALING WITH THE PROPERTY OF A DECEASED - WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN?

T

he very first step is to locate the last will of the deceased. The will typically names executors - the people who are legally authorized to deal with the estate. The job of the executors named in the will is to locate and take control of all of the deceased’s property, to pay out any creditors of the deceased including Canada Revenue Agency and to ultimately distribute the remaining property to the beneficiaries in accordance with the directions in the will. In many cases, the executors will need to obtain a grant of Letters Probate from the Court in order to be able to take control of and deal with the property. For instance, if there is even as little as $25,000 in a financial institution in the name of the deceased, the financial institution will probably require a probate of the will before it will release the money to the executors. I say probably because each financial institution has its own policy as to the maximum amount it will release without probate. Probate provides the Court’s confirmation of the death of the deceased and that the will being presented by the executors is a) the last will of the deceased and b) the executors named in the will are the people to whom the bank can release the account with impunity. If the financial institution releases the money to the executors named in an unprobated will there is always the risk that a later dated will

50

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

might be discovered and it could then be liable for releasing the money. In cases of small accounts, in lieu of probate, the financial institution will normally have the executors sign a personal indemnity. This would provide the financial institution with recourse against the executors if a later dated will is discovered and it is held liable. Just as the probate of a will protects the property holders, it also protects the executors who act under the will. Executors will not be held liable for acting under the authority of a probated will if an unknown later dated will is discovered. If the deceased died owning one or more land titles in his or her name alone, it is absolutely necessary to obtain probate. This is because Information Services Corporation (the former Land Titles Office) will only accept a probated will as proof of death of the deceased and of the authority of the executors to deal with the titles. Preparing the application for a grant of Letters Probate can be a timeconsuming and expensive process. All of the property of the deceased must be listed and valued as at the date of the death of the deceased. The Court will charge a percentage of the value of the assets owned by the deceased (0.7% = $7/ $1000 of assets). If a lawyer is retained to obtain probate, the fee will be in accordance with the tariff established

AT HOME

under the Rules of Court of the Court of Queen’s Bench. If the deceased dies without a will, the spouse or a close relative will almost always need to apply for a grant of Letters of Administration to be able to access the property of the deceased. The administrators of the estate appointed by the Court are then bound to distribute the estate in accordance with the statutory “will” spelled out in The Intestate Succession Act, 1996. Finally, because of the expense and because there are ways to avoid the court process, it is a good idea to engage in some estate planning before death. I will leave that to another time.

Did you know?

Herbals teas are actually tisanes, not teas.

You can use tap water to make tea but filtered or spring water is preferable. Never use distilled water. Do not reheat water. It is best to warm your tea pot and tea cups first so they do not absorb tea’s heat. These are suggestions. Everyone’s tastes are different.

EDUCATION

I

n Weyburn, we are blessed with a multitude of facilities offering us the chance the grow and develop new skills whatever our age. Preschoolers will find fun and engaging activities in the many childcare centers that are part of the Southeast Early Learning Community. School-age children and youths have plenty of school options in both the public and separate school systems. The residents of Weyburn also have the benefit of not needing to move to a bigger center to continue their education after high school graduation. The Southeast College located right in the city has a variety of post-secondary career training options, from trades and technical diplomas to first year university classes. By studying at home, students can save a great deal in housing costs.

Of course, learning does not take place only in a classroom. You also learn by doing, by exploring, by trying out new activities and by reading about new things. In this way, as well, Weyburn is a community rich in resources. From playgrounds to sports teams, music lessons to libraries, the city has a vast and diverse network of people and places to help you learn new skills and improve upon existing ones. Weyburn is known as ‘The Opportunity City’ for a reason! When we learn, we expand our world and with that, our chances for a more fulfilling life. So, every goal attained, every new task mastered, is a reason to celebrate. Finally learned to do the front crawl? Perhaps an ice cream cone is in order. Passed your driving test? You could

ask for a new car (it never hurts to ask!) …or at least the use of your parents’ car! Finished high school? A gown or tuxedo is a must! And guess what? Weyburn has plenty of places where you can go to celebrate your achievements surrounded by family, friends and a community that supports your efforts. So, study and practice, read and run. Engage in each and every opportunity to expand your horizons intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically no matter what your age. You never know when the knowledge, skills and connections that you have acquired can be used to benefit you and those you love.

Give Your Child the Gift of a Good Start By Tonya Lambert

Y

ou love your child more than you could have ever imagined. You want your child to have a wonderfully fulfilling life. Give them the best possible start by entrusting their early care and development to the trained professionals in the Southeast Early Learning Community.

learning and creativity. They understand the developmental milestones of childhood and know techniques to help ensure that each child meets them. They are able to recognize when a child is experiencing difficulty in learning and requires additional support as well as where to find that support.

As the Saskatchewan Early Years Plan notes, “[r]esearch has shown that children who attend a high quality early learning program are more likely to be ready for school than other children.” The ten member facilities of the Southeast Early Learning Community all offer children such an enriched learning environment.

In the Southeast Early Learning Community, staff members embrace every opportunity to learn new skills to enhance the experience of the children in their care. For example, members regularly attend professional development workshops offered throughout the province.

The women and men who operate the centres in the Southeast Early Learning Community are all educated individuals, trained in early childhood development. They know how to create a safe and secure environment that stimulates

“Children learn through play so we provide them with lots of activities so that they can develop holistically in the areas of spiritual, cognitive, physical and emotional development,” explains Lori Hiltz, Director, Sunrise Early Learning Centre. “Every member of our group uses

the Play and Exploration Guide created by the Ministry of Education in 2011 as a guide to setting up the activities in their centre’s programs.” “We teach the children through thoughtful programming, inspired by the children’s interest,” says Hiltz. “For example, art is appreciated for the process rather than the final product.” By prioritizing process over product, the children learn how to solve problems and create connections and gain skills that can be transferred to other situations. Tara McKinney is a kindergarten teacher and a mother. Her son attends Sunrise Early Learning Centre, a member of the Southeast Early Learning Community. She attests to the benefits experienced by the children who attend these centres. “Sunrise Early Learning staff work hard to structure learning environments that are dynamic and engaging for the children. They are constantly providing stimulating

learning invitations that build excitement to explore and create. The depth of learning that takes places with even the smallest children is simply amazing!” You want your child to have every advantage in life. Give them the gift of a good start with the Southeast Early Learning Community.

LAPTOPS: A REQUIREMENT FOR POST-SECONDARY SUCCESS

T

oday’s post-secondary students need a computer if they want to keep up with their peers, both in the classroom and in the future job market. It is important to get the computer that is best suited to your area of study. At Southeastern Computer Solutions, we can help you find a computer that is the perfect fit for your program. Here are some helpful tips to get you started.

graphics card to be able to complete your assignments.

1. Portability is Important Carrying a laptop around with you all day can be tiring so give the weight and size careful consideration. You want something light enough to carry but large enough to be able to type comfortably. Screen size may also be a concern for students whose programs have a big visual component.

6. Battery Life Though most schools now have plenty of recharging ports, having to recharge your laptop at school can be a nuisance. Your laptop should give you the flexibility to go and study where and when you need, so be sure to buy a computer with adequate battery life.

2. Durability Counts When you carry your computer around with you all day every day, it must be able to withstand being dropped accidentally or having something spilled on it. Look for laptops made from durable materials and with spill-resistant keyboards.

7. Consider Longevity Depending on your chosen program of study, you could be in school for four months or four years. If you are pursuing a longer program, you want to get a computer with the most up-to-date technology possible so that it is still relevant and able to perform required tasks at the end of your program.

3. Watch the Operating System Some courses require a particular operating system to be able to complete all the requirements. Check with your school to see if this is the case with your program. 4. Graphic Needs Are you studying engineering, graphic arts or computer sciences? For these and other programs, you will need an advanced

58

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

5. Memory is a Must What all do you use your computer for? Taking notes, writing essays, storing photos, playing games, listening to music. Be sure your computer has enough memory for everything you do. And remember to always back up your data.

8. Warranty & Service When purchasing a computer, always check the warranty and service options. Is the store where you are shopping able to service the computers they sell? 9. Remember Your Down Time No student spends all their time studying. Taking regular breaks to relax is important.

EDUCATION

Will you be using your computer then? Perhaps you like gaming or are an amateur artist? Getting a computer that will meet all your different needs is important. Be sure to mention these to sales staff. At Southeastern Computer Solutions, we can help you with all your computer needs, from picking out the perfect computer for your studies to installing the operating system and transferring the data from your old computer. We also carry a variety of printers and scanners. If you don’t see what you want, we will order it for you.

Balance and the Bottom Line

ow can balance in your life lead to balancing your budget? When you take care of yourself, you can be more productive. Work-life balance is just as important to your business plan as your profit and loss statement. To bring your life more into balance, prioritize sleep, exercise, stress management and healthy eating. Think of balance as the “sweet spot,” where key aspects of your life are aligned.

62

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

Getting enough sleep is important to ensuring balance. When your tank is running on empty, you don’t have enough to give to your business. Six to eight hours of sleep per night is imperative. Exercise releases endorphins, so while taking care of your body you are also relieving stress. Endorphins are the happy hormones that allow you to feel joy. Start with 20 minutes a day. Pick yourself up a fitness tracker and log your steps. You can even track your sleep with these! Your goal is 10,000 steps a day. Keep in mind that your life and

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

business changes, so make sure your exercise routine can change with it. Ever notice how much smoother your car runs when you fill it with premium fuel? The same goes for your body. When you fill it with healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables and lean meats instead of processed foods like potato chips, fast food and excessive amounts of sugar, your body will thank you. Balanced nutrition is key to having life balance. Get your creative juices flowing.

Finding time to be creative can change your outlook on things. Painting, writing, or even colouring can bring out a creative streak. Adult colouring books are the rage right now. Colouring allows the fear centre of your brain to relax, thereby relaxing you — and not just while you are colouring. Giving this part of your brain periodic rest actually reduces your overall stress. Colouring is a meditative, free-time activity you can schedule, making it perfect for retraining your brain to respond less harshly to stress. Make time for people who are important in your life. Family and relationships can recharge your soul more than you will ever know. They can fill your bucket at the end of a workday, when your bucket is empty. Take time to play a game with your child, enjoy a night out with your spouse, or take Fido for a long walk — it can help restore some harmony in your life. By finding a work-life balance, you will have more energy to put into your business and ultimately increase profitability.

TIPS TO PRESERVE YOUR VEHICLE’S VALUE

A

vehicle is a big investment. One of the biggest investments most people make in their lifetime. As such, you will want to properly maintain it, both as a point of pride but also so it will retain as much trade-in value as possible. Keep the Vehicle Clean Keeping your vehicle clean is often easier said than done. Certain protection packages, like paint and fabric/leather protection, will make cleaning the vehicle a less daunting chore. It’s good to give your car a thorough cleaning at least twice a year and more often if possible, especially if you are an active family or someone living in a rural area. Exterior cleaning should happen more frequently in our harsh Canadian winters to remove salt deposits that can eventually lead to rust. Regular Maintenance With our busy lives, it is easy to avoid taking your car in to get the necessary services. However, it is important to have your vehicle serviced on a regular basis. Regular servicing can help avoid big, costly repairs in the future. When you have your vehicle serviced at Knight Dodge of Weyburn, it creates a permanent record that can be accessed by all other Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealerships if you need to have work

done when you are out of town. Having a record of the services done on a vehicle demonstrates to a potential buyer that you took care to maintain the car properly during your ownership. Every manufacturer has their own set schedules so it is important to review your owner’s manual. Watch the Mileage The first thing anyone will ask when inquiring about a vehicle that is for sale is “How many kilometers does it have on it?” The number of kilometers on a vehicle helps determine how much it is worth. The more kilometers, the less value a car has. By watching the mileage and trading it in before the 100,000kms mark will provide you with a higher tradein value than if it is over the 100,000kms due to the manufacturer’s warranty. A vehicle that is still under warranty has more value.

and hood deflectors are great additional accessories that can prevent paint chipping from rocks. If you are an active family going in and out of your vehicle, adding fitted floor liners can protect the carpet from wear and tear. By simply following a regular maintenance schedule and protecting your vehicle properly, you will be happier with the trade-in value from the dealership. A wellmaintained vehicle is greatly appreciated by the future owner.

Additional Vehicle Protection When looking at different ways to protect your vehicle, consider the use of the vehicle: where and how you drive will determine the protection that will suit your needs. Do you travel on a lot of rural roads? An undercoating application will add value as it will protect your undercarriage from being beat up by rocks, and it also reduces road noise. THE WELL-OILED VEHICLE

O

il cleans, cools and lubricates the engine, and when the engine is healthy, the vehicle drives well.

Oil, in essence, is the lifeblood of your vehicle. And yet with the recent changes in how engines and oils are made, many drivers aren’t sure how to best manage this all-important fluid. How often should the engine oil be changed in a vehicle? There is no exact calculation as to how often the engine oil should be changed in a vehicle. Every manufacturer has their own set of guidelines that they set out in the owner’s manuals. There are many factors at work – how you drive, the condition and age of the engine, the external environment you drive in and whether you do stop-and-go or highway driving will determine the frequency of oil and filter services. Does it really need synthetic oil? Due to redesigned engines, manufacturers, in the last decade, have had to meet fuel efficiency and emissions standards. Today’s engines have to work harder and burn much hotter, and conventional oil just can’t handle that heat tolerance, but full or semi-synthetic oil can. If you use the wrong oil, you have a really good chance of damaging your engine. The slightly more expensive synthetic oil service isn’t really costing you more

because you’re doing it less frequently. To ensure your vehicle is running smoothly and efficiently always check the owner’s manual for the suggested manufacturer specifications. Do oil changes have to be done at a dealership to be warranty approved? While some drivers are on track with when to get an oil service, some carry myths about where. Many drivers believe they have to get their oil changed at the dealership to keep their vehicle warranty intact. In fact, at Kal Tire Weyburn, all our products and services are warrantyapproved. This means we meet the equipment specifications laid out by the manufacturer’s guidelines, so you don’t have to go through your dealership. It is best to keep all records to prove the services were done at manufacturer’s suggested times in case an issue does arise.

vehicle will get the correct oil service it needs and will be pointed in the direction you want to go with our four-wheel alignment offered six days a week. 2017 SILVERADO HD FEATURES THE NEW DURAMAX 6.6L DIESEL ENGINE

Next-generation redesign is stronger, with more power and greater refinement. The redesign offers more horsepower and torque than ever — an SAE-certified 445 horsepower and 910 lb.-ft. to enable easier, more confident hauling and trailering. Along with a 19 percent increase in maximum torque over the current Duramax 6.6L, the redesigned turbo-diesel’s performance is quieter and smoother for greater refinement. Engine noise at idle is reduced 38 percent. The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD also features an all-new, patented air intake system. Marked by a dramatic hood scoop, the system drives cool, dry air into the engine for sustained performance and cooler air temperatures during difficult driving conditions.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS • Standard automatic locking differential • Standard Stabilitrack with trailer sway control • Available Gooseneck/5th wheel prep package • Up to 22,700 lbs towing capacity (3500 Dually) • Duralife brake rotors • Available digital steering assist • Teen Driver, which encourages safe driving habits, enabling parents or business owners to view the vehicle’s maximum speed, distance driven and the number of times active safety features were engaged during a drive

Get to know

the ReFINEd Team Monica grew up on a farm west of Weyburn where her family ranched. Today, Monica, her husband Lee and daughters, Sienna and Lejla live on an acreage south of Weyburn with their horse Max, pony Splash and coonhounds Banjo, Ticker and Bonnie. The family loves to spend time together outdoors, and both Monica and Lee are avid hunters. Monica also enjoys doing crafts, such as scrapbooking, cardmaking and crocheting, as well as cooking healthy meals for her family. In addition to working as a sales representative, Monica also runs a home-based business called Epicure, selling seasonings, spices and cookware. March 2017 will be one year with the magazine for Monica. She has over nine years of sales experience and enjoys meeting the business owners, learning about them and how they run their business. The best part about working for ReFINEd is the flexibility and that no two days are ever the same.

Britany returned from her maternity

leave in January. She feels blessed that she is able to work part- time for the magazine, giving her the opportunity to be a part-time stay-at-home mom, as well. She works with an amazing team of talented women, one of them being her sister Brooke. Britany lives on a farm south of Weyburn with her husband Chad, a grain and cattle farmer, their one-yearold daughter Emy and their dog Ruby. Farming is in Britany’s roots, and she loves living in the country. She enjoys reading and spending time with her family. Britany and Chad’s daughter Emy is full of curiosity, and Britany loves how she interacts with everyone and everything around her. Full of life and with a big personality, Emy is also a bit of a daredevil which keeps mom and dad on their toes!

THE

ReFined

EXPERIENCE We really enjoy the ReFINEd Weyburn magazine as the photos are always top-notch and the stories are well written. Cogent has advertised several times in the magazine, and we have always felt that we received great value for our advertising dollar as the magazine has a long shelf life. We see it displayed for months after print and have received very positive feedback from not only our clients but other local individuals from the community who have read the pieces and recognized us out in our daily activities. We have found the articles regarding other local businesses to be very informative and have learned many things about the owners and their staff that we did not know beforehand. We can truly see the value of the magazine as we continuously learn about local community members and businesses through our own reading. Each time we set out to create an ad in the magazine, we are impressed with the service we receive. It is always a great experience to deal with exceptional writers who help us to articulate our story and really put our best face forward, as well as the photographers who take quality photos that highlight the piece. When the editor puts together the final layout, we are never disappointed as it seems to fit together perfectly. After our experience with ReFINEd Weyburn, we would recommend this magazine to all other businesses looking to advertise and get their story out there. – Ted and Rhonda Hillstead Cogent Chartered Professional Accountants LLP
