Attention Homeowners: Imagine a durable, versatile and attractive patio cover, one that delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm. Suncoast Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Our built-in guttering system effectively channels away rain runoff to prevent flooding and structural damage. The louvers are charged by an efficient solar panel and are operated by a hand-held remote. Open the louvers slightly or up to a full 180 degrees to increase ventilation and control the amount of sunlight or shade on your patio. Suncoast Enclosures offers a screened-in outdoor area that allows you to enjoy your deck, pool, spa or patio without the sense of being enclosed in an indoor space.

Giving back to the community comes in many forms. Here are a few ideas that may inspire you this year:

JAMS Family Christmas Day Dinner

December 25 Knox Fellowship Hall Call Doreen J. Brown at 306.842.3316 to volunteer or for monetary donations. For more than 15 years, Sandy SpencerJohnson has been hosting a homecooked Christmas dinner for Weyburn residents. JAMS Family Christmas Day Dinner — named on behalf of her family: Jen, Ali, Mikki, and Sandy — is hosted in honour of her late husband, Daryl, who passed away in 2003. Today, Sandy, along with her kids and her husband Joel, put together the annual celebration with the intention to bring together people in the community who may need a little extra company. “It has nothing to do with your status,” explains Sandy. “Old, young, family, alone, doesn’t matter — you’re welcome here.” Held at the Knox Fellowship Hall on Christmas Day, there is no charge to attend the JAMS dinner (but

It’s also time for their Adopt-a-Family program, whereby local families are able to experience a magical Christmas holiday of delicious food and gifts for the family — 100% anonymously donated by

BODY, MIND & SOUL: Self-Care for a Healthy New Year By Erin Legg

YOUR HEALTH

This New Year, it’s time to embark on a new health and wellness journey. Creating a holistic self-care routine that focuses on your physical, mental and spiritual health can help improve your body’s immune system, reduce your risk for depression and anxiety, and decrease your overall stress.

BODY First, let’s talk about what you put into your body. We’ve all heard it time and time again, and it remains true: what you eat affects the way you feel, the way you move, and the way your body operates. You owe it to yourself to energize your body with a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Each body is unique and has its own demands, so it really doesn’t hurt to speak to a nutritionist who can help you evaluate the best diet for you. Also, make a pledge to drink more water this year! A dehydrated body is inefficient and can’t support your fitness goals the way a hydrated body can. Now, let’s talk about what you do with your body. If you cannot remember the last time you broke a sweat, pledge to yourself that 2019 is the year you commit to sweat stains, sore muscles, and body strength. Consider purchasing a pass to a fitness facility, and take the extra step of scheduling sessions with a personal trainer. He or she will know exactly how to set you up for achieving your fitness goals. If you’re a regular gym rat who needs a change, try CrossFit, Zumba or salsa dancing, swimming, or even long-distance running. You never know what sport you’ll fall in love with if you don’t give it a try!

MIND The state of your mind has a dramatic impact on the state of your body and soul. Your self-care regimen

should emphasize regular, restful sleep. If you are not sleeping well (whether it’s insomnia, sleep apnea, or even anxiety), speak to a professional who can assess your situation and get you back on track. Who knows — it could be as simple a fix as a new mattress. Treat your brain to intellectual stimulation. Make 2019 the year to enroll in that class you’ve always fantasized about. Or, you might want to consider learning a musical instrument. Scientific studies have shown that music affects the brain’s neural pathways, ultimately improving cognition.

SOUL The third tenet of your self-care routine is cultivating a healthy soul. There are many ways to feed your spiritual self. You might consider embracing the use of essential oils into your daily routine. The calming aromas, in addition to the anti-bacterial healing benefits, contribute to your holistic wellness plan. Embrace relaxation techniques, whether it’s establishing a regular meditation period (even just 10 minutes every morning) or incorporating Reiki into your schedule. Encourage yourself to try a yoga class, commit to regular journaling, or even volunteer for a cause you are passionate about. Remember, cultivating self-care is not an option to a healthy you. It’s a necessity. Start the New Year off right with a plan to nourish your body, mind, and soul.

EXPERT ADVICE

EXPERT ADVICE

KEEPING OUR PETS SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

C

hristmas is many people’s favorite season that we look forward to all year around. Christmas is filled with celebrations with friends, family and often our pets are part of this excitement. We want your Christmas to be filled with holiday memories and none of them to include an emergency trip to the veterinarian. CATS LOVE CHRISTMAS TREES and everything that goes with. Make your tree safe this year with a few simple tips for both your cat and your dog. 1. Secure your tree from being knocked over. Cats are curious by nature and love to climb, we should expect young cats to want to try and climb up the tree. Be ready and have it secured for when they do. 2. No tinsel. The loose tinsel that can be placed as individual strands can be ingested by cats and creates a life threating blockage in their intestines. Stick to beads, ropes or wide ribbons as decorations. 3. Shatterproof ornaments are the best choice when decorating and try keeping the lower portion of the tree with little to no decoration. Avoiding ornaments with loose pieces that are easily chewed apart. Christmas plants are often given as gifts or used as decorations. Poinsettias, mistletoe, holly and lilies are part of the tradition. When placing these plants in the home, place them where your pets

can not access them. If a toxic plant is ingested it is important to know before calling your veterinarian; what type of plant they ate, how much your pet weighs and how long ago they ingested it. Depending on the plant, signs of toxicity may range from general digestive upset, to organ damage and even fatalities. The ASPCA website is a great resource for pet owners researching if their plants are on the toxic list. Christmas goodies can cause lots of trouble. Many pet owners don’t think twice about wrapping up a box of chocolates and placing it under the tree. You would be amazed how many pet’s get in trouble this way. Best advice is to avoid placing even wrapped chocolate under the tree until just before gift giving time. Our favorite holiday delights like turkey, ham and gravy can seem like a delightful treat but can lead to gastro intestinal upset like diarrhea, vomiting and even serious illness like pancreatitis. Christmas party guests can leave plates and cups unattended so during these events it is best to crate your pet or send them to “grandma’s” for the night. Be prepared in advance; know your veterinarian’s office hours over the holiday and their on-call Christmas availability. Be prepared with some basic first aid items; a roll of vet wrap, wound ointment like derma-gel, a bag of gastrointestinal pet food, and Benadryl. Pets that are heading to a kennel need proper vaccination given in a timely manner. Canine cough is a common virus

YOUR HEALTH

that is spread through the air and dogs that kennel are at higher risk. Ensure your pet is properly vaccinated by asking your veterinary clinic and make sure they are done at least two weeks prior to boarding. From everyone at Prairie Animal Health Centre have a Very Merry Christmas and keep your pet safe this holiday season!

The Gift of

Love & Support By Kaley Schultz

In our proud city, one does not need to travel too far to find businesses that cater to our physical health and appearances. However, where does one window shop when they are having an internal conflict with the person staring back at them in the mirror?

16

YOUR HEALTH

M

ental health, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, is fundamental to our wellbeing. “We cannot be truly healthy without it,” says Tasha Collins, program director for Weyburn’s Canadian Mental Health Association. “It involves how we feel, think, act, and interact with the world around us.” Collins explains that it is normal and anticipated for one to experience highs and lows in life. However, when these lows last for extended periods of time and freeze someone from progressing or functioning in day-to-day life, that is when various forms of intervention may be brought to light. It can seem like the masses have countdowns to Christmas and visions of sugar plums are dancing in everyone’s head. The reality is that the advice in the timeless song, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” can seem unmanageable for an undisclosed number of community members. Weyburn’s Canadian Mental Health Association and Envision Counselling and Support Centre are two local organizations that provide preventative and intervention programming, free of charge, and recognize that during the Christmas season not everyone will experience holiday cheer. Envision’s community outreach coordinator, Juli Dzuba, explains: “As the holidays get closer, it is easy to get lost in the overwhelming demands of the season.” What contributes to a change in one’s mental health over the holiday season? Collins explains that even individuals who classify themselves as close-knit to their family can be triggered just as much as an individual who considers themselves to have strained family dynamics. Finances also take stock as an influence on one’s mental health. Fluctuation of one’s mental health can be brought on by the tradition and expectations of gift-giving, too. Collins adds that these feelings will continue once the mail has been delivered with credit card bills. Dzuba acknowledges that “Conflicts may arise during this time and if violence is already present it is likely escalated.” She advises us to invest our energy wisely during this time of the year. “Acknowledge what feelings are coming up. Learn to say ‘no’ if ‘yes’ will add more stress to the situation. Make time for self-care.” Both agencies offer preventative and intervention programming yearround in an effort to contribute to the health of our community. The gift of knowledge is life changing, and even life-saving in some cases. According to Collins, presentations on the issue of understanding and normalizing mental health are catered to any age group and environment. Details and dates about ongoing daily programming and events are available at weyburn. cmha.ca. A list of programming available through Envision is available at envisioncounsellingcentre.com/events. Both agencies are a gift and light to Weyburn. They not only re-evaluate programming for how the holiday season can impact us, but they also evolve with the changing needs of our growing community.

It is incredibly simple to transform regular cut vegetables into a holiday wreath, a tree, a Santa and so much more. Vegetables are packed with vitamins and fibre. STYLE & BEAUTY

From Office Wear to New Year’s Eve:

Three Holiday Looks Deciding what to wear over the holidays can be tough! Whether it's wanting to show your holiday spirit at the office (without looking like a sparkly Christmas ornament) to standing out at a New Year’s Eve party, we've all grappled with the "I don't know what to wear!” dilemma. This is why I've teamed up with Suzy Shier and makeup artist Jesyka Chelle to share three different looks to use as inspiration this holiday season!

20

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

STYLE & BEAUTY

Look #1: Holiday Work Wear You don't have to show up in an ugly Christmas sweater to share your holiday spirit around the office! Opt for a pair of trendy paper-bag waist pants in a festive colour (hues of red or green) and add a bold chrome lip to amp up your regular workwear look. The appropriate accessories will also help increase your holiday street cred around the water cooler. Throw on a big chunky knitted scarf if you get chilly sitting at your desk, and opt for a purse in a rich dark tone that compliments your holiday hues.

Look #3: Glam Holiday Party We went all out for the last holiday look. This is the show stopper, the head turner, the star on the top of the Christmas tree … you get the idea. If you're wanting to go full out glam for a holiday party or the ball-drop on New Year’s Eve, don't be afraid to go big and bold!

Look #2: Christmas Gathering with Friends I don't know about you, but gathering with friends is one of my favourite things about this season! A coffee shop meetup or a Christmas concert with the girls is the perfect time to pull out your glitter eyeshadow and bold red lip. This is my favourite makeup look created by Jesyka — she absolutely nailed the holiday theme I was going for! This year, skirts and over the knee boots are popular. I personally love these trends paired together — especially with a holiday twist to them! Add a beret if you're feeling the urge to look even more festive. Your friends will love your holiday inspired look!

STYLE & BEAUTY

Sequins are one of the most festive fabrics there is, and this is the ideal time of year to incorporate it into your look! A sequinned dress paired with the right accessories is the perfect way to ring in the New Year. What are you waiting for? Get out there and celebrate the season in style.

Stay-Cation!

Ten Ideas to Try This Winter By Erin Legg

Does a winter getaway mean travelling afar? Not necessarily! Maybe this year you’ve decided to stick close to home because of work or school commitments. Perhaps you want to save more money for next year’s vacation. Whatever your reason for having one, a staycation is a restorative, relaxing and enjoyable treat for yourself and the family. It’s also a great way to keep your money local, benefitting the community.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR VACATIONING RIGHT IN YOUR HOMETOWN. 1. Pamper your body, mind, and soul by making an appointment for a well-earned spa day. 2. Take advantage of the winter wonderland and embark on a cross-country skiing or snowshoeing adventure. 3. Spend the day ripping up the trails on a snowmobile. Before you head out, make sure your machine gets a checkup — and dress warm! 4. Go skating. Tip: Be sure your skates are sharpened before hitting the ice. 5. Treat the family to a hotel with a pool for the weekend. Or, surprise your sweetheart with a romantic weekend escape. 6. Create a “nest” at home where you can escape the winter’s chill. Treat yourself to new snuggly blankets, luscious pillows, and dreamy candles to create a warm atmosphere. Grab a mug of hot cocoa or mulled wine, and disappear in the pages of a good book. 7. Treat yourself to a leisure centre pass and hit the pool. 8. Get yourself dolled up for a night out at your favourite restaurant. Invite your sweetheart or your best pals for a fun evening of making memories. 9. Try new recipes. Experiment with gourmet food and exotic ingredients. 10. Go bowling. Up the ante by challenging some friends!

Longtime friends Brian Cathcart (lead vocals, guitar), Matt McNeil (mandolin, guitar), Colin Gillis (harmonica, bass, vocals), Redmond MacDougall (banjo, percussion, vocals), and newly added Scott MacLean (guitar, mandolin) make up Pretty Archie. Growing up together, jamming regularly, they decided to form a band in 2012 and named the ensemble after a local character. For the musicians, this name embodies the love of playing

and performing music, along with representing their hometown. Over the past six years, Pretty Archie albums have received multiple East Coast Music Award nominations, all while the band has entertained audiences from coast to coast, playing in some of Canada’s best festivals and venues. Pretty Archie’s honest, heartfelt lyrics connect listeners with a saltwater perspective on modern living. The band continues to push the genre lines of Americana, bluegrass, country, and blues, creating the unique sound for which Pretty Archie is known. Foot-stomping, high-energy songs, mixed with a poignant four-piece harmony are what fans of these Cape Breton musicians love! Pretty Archie’s unique sound and energetic shows are guaranteed to leave their audience with a nice lasting memory.

Local Business Owner Impressed with Community & Staff Support By Erin Legg

T

alk about a busy year! The 2018 calendar pages of Joanne and Tom Carisse — owners of Weyburn’s Tim Hortons — detailed some exciting events, including several successful fundraising initiatives hosted by Tim Hortons in support of various local, provincial and national causes. Timmie’s fans throughout the community will fondly recall these successful campaigns: • the province-wide Humboldt Broncos Strong donut sale, with Weyburn raising more than $7,000 in a week in support of the hockey team; • the $3,500 raised on Tim Hortons Camp Day in June, with the proceeds of coffee sales being used for leadership development through a camp experience for children with limited opportunities; and • September’s Smile Cookie campaign, which raised more than $7,000 locally

from cookies sales, with all proceeds donated to the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation.

They take a lot of pride in their jobs,” she grins. “Without them, none of this would happen!”

Tim Hortons in Weyburn also hosted a Day of Inclusion in July, with proceeds from donut sales donated to Special Olympics Canada (an organization Tim Hortons is proud to sponsor). Tim Hortons is also the sponsor of local TimBits hockey and soccer teams.

The entire staff of Tim Hortons would like to extend the warmest appreciation to each and every customer who supported the business and its 2018 fundraising initiatives. May the magic of the holiday season extend throughout the community and into the New Year. Merry Christmas from Tim Hortons!

01 Weyburn residents are big supporters of local businesses, and although she shouldn’t be surprised by this generosity by now, Joanne admits she’s always impressed. “Considering all the initiatives we do, I’m always overwhelmed by the community response. It shows the local pride Weyburn has. It’s nice to see the community engaged so much.” 7 August 2017

MOSCOW MULE Ingredients 2 oz. vodka 1/2 oz. lime juice 6 oz. ginger beer

Directions Pour lime juice into a copper mug and drop in the spent shell. Add 2 or 3 ice cubes or crushed ice, then pour in the vodka and fill with cold ginger beer. Serve with a stirring rod. Or try The Kentucky Mule

For those who like their cocktails with more of an American Southern vibe, or for those who just don't like vodka, the highly refreshing alternative to the Moscow Mule is the Kentucky Mule. It's made exactly the same as the Moscow version, only instead of 2 oz. of vodka, you use 2 oz. of bourbon. Garnish it with a sprig of mint. Adapted from Esquire Editors

It’s Clay Time!

Local Artists Create Functional Art By Erin Legg

L-R Mary Beach and Lynn Beach

T

his is pottery for a new generation. Mother-daughter duo Lynn and Mary Beach are the potters behind The Clay People, a locally-based creative team who enjoys pushing boundaries and crafting truly stunning pieces of functional art. “More traditional potters tend to use a lot of blues, oatmeals, more earthy colours,” explains Mary. “We have reds, yellows, pinks … nobody uses pink!” The Clay People’s style can be described as “refined rustic” — a perfect blend of unpretentious sophistication and good old handiwork. Mary, who discovered her love of pottery during a grade nine activity

class, enjoys the beauty-in-imperfection component of her art form. “It’s handson, it’s messy,” she grins. “It doesn’t have to be perfect — and I like that about pottery. You make a piece how you want.”

In the spring of 2017, she founded The Clay People, and since that time the team has been presenting their products to an ever-growing customer base extending across Canada.

Two years ago Mary and Lynn enrolled in a local pottery class, where they explored this new activity with passion and creativity. For Lynn, Mary’s mother, pottery is intriguing because of its practicality: “I like making something that you can use, like a mug or a water pitcher.”

Mary works out of the Signal Hill Arts Centre in Weyburn, while Lynn has a studio on the farm. Both women are members of the Weyburn Pottery Club, where they share their skills with like-minded artists. McPhail Travel & Boutique in Moosomin carries pottery by The Clay People, and a display at the family farmhouse is also available for inperson showings.

It did not take long before Mary knew her love of pottery was more than a hobby.

Social media users are encouraged to check out @theclaypeoplesk on Instagram for a beautiful display of current items for sale, demonstrations of the products in use, and even behind the scenes glimpses into the pottery process. As pieces come available, Mary posts images and descriptions, so those who wish to purchase the item can message her for details. Occasionally, The Clay People will host a “flash sale” through Instagram stories, so fans who follow the page just may score a deal! Both Mary and Lynn enjoy meeting people within the community and the surrounding areas, so from time to time

they will attend a craft or maker sale showcasing wares by The Clay People where they can discuss pottery with other artists and the general public. The Clay People will consider custom orders on a case-by-case basis, so be sure to inquire if you are interested. Mary, whose graduation is just around the corner, has plans to keep creating beautiful pieces of pottery and grow her business by expanding their client base and pursuing new avenues of exposure. PAY YOURSELF FIRST By Brook Thalgott

I

t seems like a simple enough idea, paying yourself first. However, most people don’t do it. They pay everything else, and then themselves. The financial professionals at Weyburn Security/Peak Investments want to change that. “Paying yourself is the most important expense you have in your monthly budget,” says Jim Onstad, Managing Director. Clients can set up automatic monthly withdrawals that buy the investments on a regular basis. “For example, investing $200 a month with a 6 percent average return over 25 years will give you more than $130,000 back,” says Onstad. “Monthly purchase plans are an effective way for people to reduce volatility and ensure they meet their investment objectives,” says Onstad. Plans such as these also create a dollar-cost averaging purchase strategy which is very appropriate in today’s world, given current market conditions. If you earn a regular income, monthly purchase plans are a great way to save. You simply choose an amount, and have it taken out automatically like you would pay any other monthly expense. And the best part – the money is yours to keep.

“Many people are undecided as to whether they should make an RSP contribution or invest in a tax-free savings account,” says Onstad. “Some financial institutions may not consider your personal financial situation in enough detail before making a recommendation.” Onstad notes that both types of accounts have different rules associated with them, so getting personalized advice for your situation is a must. Weyburn Security advisors look at you and your family as a whole to plan the right products for you individually and between you and your spouse. “Every financial situation is unique and must be planned accordingly,” says Onstad.

“Unlike other institutions, we don’t deal with employee transfers or company name changes. We are an independent mutual fund dealer offering top-notch advice and stability for clients now and in the future.”

L-R Jim Onstad, Gwen Paterson, Desiree Rainey, Rhonda Logel, Fran Birrell, Marie Verhaeghe, Jennifer Benning & Mike Onstad PHOTO BY Images Jon Gillies

Perhaps most importantly, Weyburn Security/Peak Investments is an independent mutual fund dealer. “Unlike some other financial institutions, we aren’t obliged to sell “in-house” mutual funds,” says Onstad. “We have no sales quotas to fill or have any incentives to make more commission by selling specific funds. We get paid the same no matter what we sell, and we also don’t sell funds with deferred sales charges (DSC) that take a fee if you need to move

money from one mutual fund company to another.” What Weyburn Security/ Peak Investments cares about is that the right investment matches each client’s personal risk, time horizon and objectives when they recommend a product. Their advisors are able to move money from one fund company to another to ensure the right product is chosen with no fees attached, which works for both client and advisor management.

Weyburn Security has a long history in the city, dating back to 1926. It was involved with the Weyburn Security Bank, that operated between 1910 and 1931. The bank had over 30 branches in southern Saskatchewan. The Onstad Family has managed the company for decades, with Albert Onstad, Jack Onstad, and Jim Onstad working as Managing Directors over the years. Mike Onstad is now the fourth generation working with Weyburn Security. With a staff of nine, the company is a Weyburn institution. The company has evolved into an investment and insurance advisory office, offering advice and products for clients with many investment goals. Weyburn Security also provides insurance coverage for homeowners, farm, business, auto and other specialty insurance needs. They also provide management services for clients who own minerals or mineral rights and need assistance in the negotiation of Petroleum and Natural Gas leases or the management and disbursement of royalties, accounting and tax services for trusts, estates, or other groups.

Stability and continuity is something you can count on with Weyburn Security. The company has been around for nearly 100 years, and they are planning for the next 100 years. “Many of our staff have been for 25 years or more,” says Onstad. “Unlike other institutions, we don’t deal with employee transfers or company name changes. We are an independent mutual fund dealer offering top-notch advice and stability for clients now and in the future.” If you’re looking for an assessment of your current financial situation, including your investments, make a free, no-obligation appointment with Weyburn Security. They will take a look at your portfolio no matter the size and provide independent advice with no high-pressure sales tactics. You can meet in-person or chat via email – whatever works best for you.

unerals are a rite of passage, validating the loss for those grieving. They also provide a comforting place to share sadness while celebrating a life. Funerals allow your loved ones and your community to pay their respects and share their memories together. Ensuring your wishes are met helps your loved ones through their journey to healing. Preplanning your final wishes can allow you to make decisions before they are needed, removing the burden from your family. These decisions are far easier to make when you’re not facing your own mortality and dealing with many emotions. “Preplanning lets your family know ahead of time what your wishes are so there is less stress left to your grieving loved ones,” says Tamara Seghers, Funeral Director, Embalmer and Location Manager of Weyburn’s Fletcher Funeral Chapel. ver the past 10 years, Bree has helped families settle and communities grow. Today, she’s more than pleased to be doing it all

in Weyburn.

Prior to moving back in 2011, she and her husband were living in Kenosee when they started their family. Having been born and raised in Weyburn, Bree wanted to return to her hometown to settle their lives. “It’s a great community — very safe, lots of opportunities. Great sports programs to keep the kids busy — we love it.” In 2016, the opportunity came along to buy the Royal LePage brokerage and knowing the family’s roots were planted, Bree jumped on the chance to become her own boss. Today, she enjoys growing the Weyburn community, one home at a time. Set Yourself up for

FINANCIAL SUCCESS By Erin Legg

52

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

Financial success is defined differently for each person. But it does involve the same key components: a goal, a plan, and some resolve. Whether you’re wanting to overall your short-term financial goals, or reassess your long-term goals, take control and develop healthy, essential habits to help you create the success you deserve. Set A Goal

Seek Professional Advice

What is a specific financial goal you’d like to achieve in 2019? Over the next 10 years? Next 25 years? Perhaps you’d like to have more in your savings account. Maybe pay off your credit cards. Purchase your dream home or travel the world for a year. Whatever you are determined to achieve, be very specific and write it down.

After you’ve set your financial goal, whether long term or short term, your relationship with your financial planner is instrumental in building your overall wealth. A financial planner will assess your goals and help chart how much money to put into your savings and set aside for retirement investing (RRSPs), and even examine the type of insurance best suited for your situation. Your financial planner can also help you look at your mortgage, and help you determine the size of the emergency fund you should have socked away. Various investment strategies can seem overwhelming — stocks and bonds, RESPs, what do they all mean? — but your financial planner will recommend investments to help with your personal wealth goal.

Budget Your budget is your spending plan for the year. It helps create the structure for your financial goals. Take some time to review last year’s budget and assess how well it worked for you and your family. What are the changes that need to be applied for the upcoming year? Are you expecting a raise? Has the number of household members increased or decreased? Are you planning extra vacation time or more extracurricular activities for the kids? Planning a renovation? These are all considerations to keep in mind as you map your revised budget.

Stop Hiding from Debt

The new year brings new possibilities. Keep your financial goals in mind and set out to achieve them. Remember, longterm financial success isn’t about being stingy and hoarding your money. It’s about using your money in the best way possible for the best results possible.

Avoiding the big D is detrimental to your financial future. Unmanaged debt ruins your credit rating and ends up costing you more to repay than if you had just dealt with it as it came. Start by making a list of all your loans and credit accounts, what is owing for each and the interest rates you’re paying. Prioritize your payments, and stick to the schedule. It can be overwhelming, and some people find tackling debt easier with the help of a credit counselor or debt repayment organization.

Stop in to get your bookkeeping on track this year. TOP TEN REASONS TO USE A BOOKKEEPER 1.

A bookkeeper can help you get started. Are you a DIYer trying to attack all the tasks of your business, including your bookkeeping and record keeping? Have you ever sat beside your computer and not known where to start? Bookkeepers are trained to know where to start.

2. A bookkeeper can help you organize

your company. Not sure how to handle all the tasks of your business? Not sure which systems to use to track all the information needed to file taxes and keep track of inventory, invoicing, or paying cheques? Bookkeepers are trained to know how to handle this.

3. A bookkeeper can do the job faster than you can. You pick up a receipt ready to enter it and find yourself unsure of how to categorize it. Now, you need to do some research, maybe phone someone or use the Internet, all of which is very time consuming. Bookkeepers are trained to know where different items belong — that is, whether they are an asset or expense, income or liability. 4.

A bookkeeper understands sales taxes. There are different rules regarding provincial sales tax and the GST. Different taxes apply to different situations. A bookkeeper is trained to understand these rules.

5.

A bookkeeper can help you control your paper flow. As a business, you

54

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

are always fighting a large paper flow. A bookkeeper can help you set up filing systems to keep everything well organized. This will also free up your time so you can focus on your business, spend time with your family or enjoy some down time.

6.

A bookkeeper understands the numbers. Not sure of how it all works? How do you make a profit? What expenses can you control? A bookkeeper can help you to understand what your numbers mean.

7. A bookkeeper knows how to pay your employees. TD1, T4, income tax, CPP, EI… the list goes on, and it can be intimidating to the untrained. A bookkeeper knows when reports and remittances are due and how to file them.

differently through the month or find different ways to increase your cash flow.

8.

10. A bookkeeper can give you peace

A bookkeeper can file your WCB annual and semi-annual reports. In February, Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board requires an annual report and, in July, a semi-annual update. Using your bookkeeping from the previous year, a bookkeeper can accurately file this report for you.

9. A bookkeeper can help you with cash flow. By tracking income and expenses in reports, a bookkeeper can quickly help you to see when cash flow gets tight and then help you to decide whether you need to pay things

F

isk Repair has a long, successful presence in Weyburn. Originally a tire repair shop, Fisk Repair was founded in the 1940s by Ozzy Fisk. Throughout the years various owners worked diligently to expand the company’s scope and services. Then, in the spring of 2014, former construction company owner Keith Schmeltzer purchased the rental side of the business, and worked under the name of Schmeltzy’s Rentals. By that fall, Keith also purchased the repair division of the company. Today, Schmeltzy’s Rentals/

56

Fisk Repair caters to a wide audience — including residential, agricultural and commercial customers — seeking quality equipment to rent or purchase. “We specialize in small engine and lawn and garden equipment sales and rentals,” says Keith. “Our wealth of knowledge in the back shop and continuous training keeps us ahead of the competition.” If you’re a do-it-yourselfer or a professional contractor searching for the right tool for the job, Schmeltzy’s

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

Rentals/Fisk Repair can help you out. The local business provides power equipment and tools to complete any job — from scaffolding to skid-steers, carpet cleaners to trailers, snowblowers to lawnmowers. There are a few things to which Keith attributes the success of Schmeltzy’s Rentals/Fisk Repair. First is customer service. “Customer service and feedback are very important,” he says. “We always greet our customers when they walk through the door, and always ask how their rental was. When our returning

customers purchase equipment from us, we always ask how they like our products.” Quality products by reliable brands are the second ingredient to success. Schmeltzy’s Rentals/Fisk Repair feature top brands such as Cub Cadet, a wellestablished company with products such as push mowers and zero-turns, and Stihl, a leading brand specializing in handheld equipment such as chainsaws and string trimmers. Agriculture brands offered include Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, and Honda. “All products we carry have a great warranty, and we also offer parts and service for all of our brands,” notes Keith. The third component of Keith’s success is rooted in his employees. They are knowledgeable about superior customer service delivered to each customer, and with the brands the company carries. Amanda Paré works closely with Keith ensuring all administrative duties and office organization is handled efficiently. Head mechanic Devin Knibbs has more than 30 years of experience servicing engines by Stihl, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, and everything in-between. His helper, Sloane Kozakewich, assists with the service duties, as well as maintains the rental equipment. Customers rent equipment from Schmeltzy’s because they know that each piece is wellmaintained by certified mechanics after each rental. Keith believes knowledge is power and loves to educate his customers whenever he can. As winter settles in, Keith shares this advice: “Be proactive and make sure your equipment is working properly,” he says. “Don’t wait until the last minute. Along with being proactive and ensuring your equipment works properly, make sure all safety devices work and you have the right protective equipment.” Curious if Schmeltzy’s Rentals/Fisk Repair has what you’re looking for? SEASONAL VS. WINTER TIRES:

What’s the difference? By Erin Legg

I

t’s a common question amongst drivers: “What’s the difference between seasonal tires and winter tires?” The biggest distinction is traction. Traction may not be a major safety component to winter driving for those who live in mild conditions year round. But here in Saskatchewan, where winter’s frigid temperatures and blankets of snow hang around for months on end, it’s absolutely essential. All-season tires tend to be the factory standard on most vehicles. These tires perform well on pavement or gravel during warm, dry and lightly wet conditions. The best performance from all-season tires is during temperatures at or above 7C — so, really not during a Saskatchewan winter! There are a few components of winter tires that separate them from seasonal. First, the tread rubber. A great performing tire that tackles winter like a pro should remain flexible, even in -40C temperatures, and “grippy,” especially when encountering ice. Winter tires are created from quality rubber that does just that, whereas summer and all-season tires are made with a tougher rubber that stiffens up in cold weather, resulting in poor traction. A tire’s tread depth is also an indicator of traction. Winter tires have deep treads that reduce snow buildup, and ensure the tires grip the surface of the road, regardless of the elements. These tires also have intricate tread patterns, which help channel snow and expel slush. Ever wonder what those numerous slits are throughout your winter tires’ tread? Those are biting edges, and further help the tires grab the surface of the road. All-season tires do not have this feature. Where we live, winter tires are more of an essential safety measure rather than just another automobile option. By investing in a quality set of tires and using your common sense, your winter driving should be a lot safer and less stressful.

Assemble Your Winter Roadside Survival Kit

By Erin Legg

Let’s see a quick show of hands: how many of you have an emergency winter kit in your vehicle? No shame if you don’t — that’s why we’ve made this handy list for you to consult. A simple kit stowed in your vehicle just may help save your life should you ever meet an unfortunate incident and find yourself stuck or stranded in your vehicle in our frigid winter weather. DIY: Assemble Your Winter Roadside Survival Kit YOUR SURVIVAL KIT SHOULD INCLUDE: •

sturdy bin to store items

long-lasting food, such as energy bars, and water in plastic bottles (they won’t crack when the water freezes)

blanket(s)

extra socks, mitts, hats, and sweaters

first aid kit

knife

compact or foldable shovel and an extra snow brush/scraper

simple toolkit (multi-head screwdriver, pliers, adjustable wrench and some duct tape)

candle powered heater (a metal can and a candle) and matches

flashlight (cold weather can zap your battery life, so consider a wind-up style)

whistle

fluorescent flag

spare cell phone charger

notebook and a pencil to keep track of any information the tow company provides

sand or non-clumping cat litter (provides traction when stuck on ice)

tow rope

jumper cables

road flares

fire extinguisher

While this kit will give you peace of mind, a few winter driving safety tips will also help. Try to keep your gas tank at least half full, especially when travelling long distances. If you become stuck in snow,

make sure the exhaust pipe is free from obstruction. Stay in your car and run the engine for 10 minutes every hour. Crack the window for fresh air. Finally, stay calm: a level head is necessary for survival.

Since the publication came out, the number of new customers from Weyburn and the surrounding area who have stopped in the shop has been remarkable. Our Fall Open House was our most successful one yet. I have received many comments, compliments, first-time customers and new likes on social media. I am certain it was worth the investment. Thank you, ReFined Weyburn & Area, for encouraging me and working with me to make it happen. Not only have I received compliments about the cover and the article within, but I have also heard many positive comments about the magazine itself and how well done it is. There are many interested readers from several communities outside of Weyburn who truly enjoy the publication. I would not hesitate to encourage any local business to make the investment and advertise with ReFined because it works! It has definitely paid off for me in such a short amount of time.
