For more than 15 years, Sandy SpencerJohnson has been hosting a homecooked Christmas dinner for Weyburn residents. JAMS Family Christmas Day Dinner — named on behalf of her family: Jen, Ali, Mikki, and Sandy — is hosted in honour of her late husband, Daryl, who passed away in 2003. Today, Sandy, along with her kids and her husband Joel, put together the annual celebration with the intention to bring together people in the community who may need a little extra company. “It has nothing to do with your status,” explains Sandy. “Old, young, family, alone, doesn’t matter — you’re welcome here.” Held at the Knox Fellowship Hall on Christmas Day, there is no charge to attend the JAMS dinner (but

This New Year, it’s time to embark on a new health and wellness journey. Creating a holistic self-care routine that focuses on your physical, mental and spiritual health can help improve your body’s immune system, reduce your risk for depression and anxiety, and decrease your overall stress.
BODY First, let’s talk about what you put into your body. We’ve all heard it time and time again, and it remains true: what you eat affects the way you feel, the way you move, and the way your body operates. You owe it to yourself to energize your body with a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Each body is unique and has its own demands, so it really doesn’t hurt to speak to a nutritionist who can help you evaluate the best diet for you. Also, make a pledge to drink more water this year! A dehydrated body is inefficient and can’t support your fitness goals the way a hydrated body can. Now, let’s talk about what you do with your body. If you cannot remember the last time you broke a sweat, pledge to yourself that 2019 is the year you commit to sweat stains, sore muscles, and body strength. Consider purchasing a pass to a fitness facility, and take the extra step of scheduling sessions with a personal trainer. He or she will know exactly how to set you up for achieving your fitness goals. If you’re a regular gym rat who needs a change, try CrossFit, Zumba or salsa dancing, swimming, or even long-distance running. You never know what sport you’ll fall in love with if you don’t give it a try!
MIND The state of your mind has a dramatic impact on the state of your body and soul. Your self-care regimen
should emphasize regular, restful sleep. If you are not sleeping well (whether it’s insomnia, sleep apnea, or even anxiety), speak to a professional who can assess your situation and get you back on track. Who knows — it could be as simple a fix as a new mattress. Treat your brain to intellectual stimulation. Make 2019 the year to enroll in that class you’ve always fantasized about. Or, you might want to consider learning a musical instrument. Scientific studies have shown that music affects the brain’s neural pathways, ultimately improving cognition.
SOUL The third tenet of your self-care routine is cultivating a healthy soul. There are many ways to feed your spiritual self. You might consider embracing the use of essential oils into your daily routine. The calming aromas, in addition to the anti-bacterial healing benefits, contribute to your holistic wellness plan. Embrace relaxation techniques, whether it’s establishing a regular meditation period (even just 10 minutes every morning) or incorporating Reiki into your schedule. Encourage yourself to try a yoga class, commit to regular journaling, or even volunteer for a cause you are passionate about. Remember, cultivating self-care is not an option to a healthy you. It’s a necessity. Start the New Year off right with a plan to nourish your body, mind, and soul.

KEEPING OUR PETS SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
C
hristmas is many people’s favorite season that we look forward to all year around. Christmas is filled with celebrations with friends, family and often our pets are part of this excitement. We want your Christmas to be filled with holiday memories and none of them to include an emergency trip to the veterinarian. CATS LOVE CHRISTMAS TREES and everything that goes with. Make your tree safe this year with a few simple tips for both your cat and your dog. 1. Secure your tree from being knocked over. Cats are curious by nature and love to climb, we should expect young cats to want to try and climb up the tree. Be ready and have it secured for when they do. 2. No tinsel. The loose tinsel that can be placed as individual strands can be ingested by cats and creates a life threating blockage in their intestines. Stick to beads, ropes or wide ribbons as decorations. 3. Shatterproof ornaments are the best choice when decorating and try keeping the lower portion of the tree with little to no decoration. Avoiding ornaments with loose pieces that are easily chewed apart. Christmas plants are often given as gifts or used as decorations. Poinsettias, mistletoe, holly and lilies are part of the tradition. When placing these plants in the home, place them where your pets
can not access them. If a toxic plant is ingested it is important to know before calling your veterinarian; what type of plant they ate, how much your pet weighs and how long ago they ingested it. Depending on the plant, signs of toxicity may range from general digestive upset, to organ damage and even fatalities. The ASPCA website is a great resource for pet owners researching if their plants are on the toxic list. Christmas goodies can cause lots of trouble. Many pet owners don’t think twice about wrapping up a box of chocolates and placing it under the tree. You would be amazed how many pet’s get in trouble this way. Best advice is to avoid placing even wrapped chocolate under the tree until just before gift giving time. Our favorite holiday delights like turkey, ham and gravy can seem like a delightful treat but can lead to gastro intestinal upset like diarrhea, vomiting and even serious illness like pancreatitis. Christmas party guests can leave plates and cups unattended so during these events it is best to crate your pet or send them to “grandma’s” for the night. Be prepared in advance; know your veterinarian’s office hours over the holiday and their on-call Christmas availability. Be prepared with some basic first aid items; a roll of vet wrap, wound ointment like derma-gel, a bag of gastrointestinal pet food, and Benadryl. Pets that are heading to a kennel need proper vaccination given in a timely manner. Canine cough is a common virus

that is spread through the air and dogs that kennel are at higher risk. Ensure your pet is properly vaccinated by asking your veterinary clinic and make sure they are done at least two weeks prior to boarding. In our proud city, one does not need to travel too far to find businesses that cater to our physical health and appearances. However, where does one window shop when they are having an internal conflict with the person staring back at them in the mirror?

ental health, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, is fundamental to our wellbeing. “We cannot be truly healthy without it,” says Tasha Collins, program director for Weyburn’s Canadian Mental Health Association. “It involves how we feel, think, act, and interact with the world around us.” Collins explains that it is normal and anticipated for one to experience highs and lows in life. However, when these lows last for extended periods of time and freeze someone from progressing or functioning in day-to-day life, that is when various forms of intervention may be brought to light. It can seem like the masses have countdowns to Christmas and visions of sugar plums are dancing in everyone’s head. The reality is that the advice in the timeless song, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” can seem unmanageable for an undisclosed number of community members. Weyburn’s Canadian Mental Health Association and Envision Counselling and Support Centre are two local organizations that provide preventative and intervention programming, free of charge, and recognize that during the Christmas season not everyone will experience holiday cheer. Envision’s community outreach coordinator, Juli Dzuba, explains: “As the holidays get closer, it is easy to get lost in the overwhelming demands of the season.” What contributes to a change in one’s mental health over the holiday season? Collins explains that even individuals who classify themselves as close-knit to their family can be triggered just as much as an individual who considers themselves to have strained family dynamics. Finances also take stock as an influence on one’s mental health. Fluctuation of one’s mental health can be brought on by the tradition and expectations of gift-giving, too. Collins adds that these feelings will continue once the mail has been delivered with credit card bills. Dzuba acknowledges that “Conflicts may arise during this time and if violence is already present it is likely escalated.” She advises us to invest our energy wisely during this time of the year. “Acknowledge what feelings are coming up. Learn to say ‘no’ if ‘yes’ will add more stress to the situation. Make time for self-care.” Both agencies offer preventative and intervention programming yearround in an effort to contribute to the health of our community. The gift of knowledge is life changing, and even life-saving in some cases. According to Collins, presentations on the issue of understanding and normalizing mental health are catered to any age group and environment. Ingredients 2 avocados 1 tbsp green onions 2 tbsp parsley 2 tbsp lime juice 1 pack ranch dip mix 1 cup Greek yogurt
Directions Chop green onions and parsley, mash avocados, combine all ingredients, mix well. Chill until ready to serve.

This is why I've teamed up with Suzy Shier and makeup artist Jesyka Chelle to share three different looks to use as inspiration this holiday season!

Look #1: Holiday Work Wear You don't have to show up in an ugly Christmas sweater to share your holiday spirit around the office! Opt for a pair of trendy paper-bag waist pants in a festive colour (hues of red or green) and add a bold chrome lip to amp up your regular workwear look. The appropriate accessories will also help increase your holiday street cred around the water cooler. Throw on a big chunky knitted scarf if you get chilly sitting at your desk, and opt for a purse in a rich dark tone that compliments your holiday hues.
Look #3: Glam Holiday Party We went all out for the last holiday look. This is the show stopper, the head turner, the star on the top of the Christmas tree … you get the idea. If you're wanting to go full out glam for a holiday party or the ball-drop on New Year’s Eve, don't be afraid to go big and bold!
Look #2: Christmas Gathering with Friends I don't know about you, but gathering with friends is one of my favourite things about this season! A coffee shop meetup or a Christmas concert with the girls is the perfect time to pull out your glitter eyeshadow and bold red lip. This is my favourite makeup look created by Jesyka — she absolutely nailed the holiday theme I was going for! This year, skirts and over the knee boots are popular. I personally love these trends paired together — especially with a holiday twist to them! Add a beret if you're feeling the urge to look even more festive. Your friends will love your holiday inspired look!

W
eyburn Concert Series is excited for music fans to experience its 50th anniversary season. As part of the superstar-packed schedule, Pretty Archie, a Canadiana band from Cape Breton, presents its bluegrassinspired songs on December 3. For season ticket holders, this concert is a “bonus” not included in the season ticket cost. Longtime friends Brian Cathcart (lead vocals, guitar), Matt McNeil (mandolin, guitar), Colin Gillis (harmonica, bass, vocals), Redmond MacDougall (banjo, percussion, vocals), and newly added Scott MacLean (guitar, mandolin) make up Pretty Archie. Growing up together, jamming regularly, they decided to form a band in 2012 and named the ensemble after a local character. For the musicians, this name embodies the love of playing

and performing music, along with representing their hometown. alk about a busy year! The 2018 calendar pages of Joanne and Tom Carisse — owners of Weyburn’s Tim Hortons — detailed some exciting events, including several successful fundraising initiatives hosted by Tim Hortons in support of various local, provincial and national causes. Timmie’s fans throughout the community will fondly recall these successful campaigns: • the province-wide Humboldt Broncos Strong donut sale, with Weyburn raising more than $7,000 in a week in support of the hockey team; • the $3,500 raised on Tim Hortons Camp Day in June, with the proceeds of coffee sales being used for leadership development through a camp experience for children with limited opportunities; and • September’s Smile Cookie campaign, which raised more than $7,000 locally

from cookies sales, with all proceeds donated to the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation.

Roll a 1-1/2� ball of vanilla ice cream in a plate of flaked coconut. Repeat until you have one for every glass. In a blender, blend ice, pineapple juice, blue curacao, vodka and cream of coconut until desired consistency is reached. Pour into glasses, garnish with ice cream ball and serve immediately.

It’s Clay Time!
Local Artists Create Functional Art By Erin Legg

T
his is pottery for a new generation. Mother-daughter duo Lynn and Mary Beach are the potters behind The Clay People, a locally-based creative team who enjoys pushing boundaries and crafting truly stunning pieces of functional art. “More traditional potters tend to use a lot of blues, oatmeals, more earthy colours,” explains Mary. “We have reds, yellows, pinks … nobody uses pink!” The Clay People’s style can be described as “refined rustic” — a perfect blend of unpretentious sophistication and good old handiwork. Mary, who discovered her love of pottery during a grade nine activity

class, enjoys the beauty-in-imperfection component of her art form. “It’s handson, it’s messy,” she grins. “It doesn’t have to be perfect — and I like that about pottery. You make a piece how you want.”
In the spring of 2017, she founded The Clay People, and since that time the team has been presenting their products to an ever-growing customer base extending across Canada.
Two years ago Mary and Lynn enrolled in a local pottery class, where they explored this new activity with passion and creativity. For Lynn, Mary’s mother, pottery is intriguing because of its practicality: “I like making something that you can use, like a mug or a water pitcher.”
Mary works out of the Signal Hill Arts Centre in Weyburn, while Lynn has a studio on the farm. Both women are members of the Weyburn Pottery Club, where they share their skills with like-minded artists. McPhail Travel & Boutique in Moosomin carries pottery by The Clay People, and a display at the family farmhouse is also available for inperson showings.
It did not take long before Mary knew her love of pottery was more than a hobby.

Occasionally, The Clay People will host a “flash sale” through Instagram stories, so fans who follow the page just may score a deal! Both Mary and Lynn enjoy meeting people within the community and the surrounding areas, so from time to time
they will attend a craft or maker sale showcasing wares by The Clay People where they can discuss pottery with other artists and the general public. The Clay People will consider custom orders on a case-by-case basis, so be sure to inquire if you are interested. Mary, whose graduation is just around the corner, has plans to keep creating beautiful pieces of pottery and grow her business by expanding their client base and pursuing new avenues of exposure. Prior to moving back in 2011, she and her husband were living in Kenosee when they started their family. What is a specific financial goal you’d like to achieve in 2019? Over the next 10 years? Next 25 years? Perhaps you’d like to have more in your savings account. Maybe pay off your credit cards. Purchase your dream home or travel the world for a year. Whatever you are determined to achieve, be very specific and write it down.
After you’ve set your financial goal, whether long term or short term, your relationship with your financial planner is instrumental in building your overall wealth. A financial planner will assess your goals and help chart how much money to put into your savings and set aside for retirement investing (RRSPs), and even examine the type of insurance best suited for your situation. SEASONAL VS. WINTER TIRES:
What’s the difference? By Erin Legg
I
t’s a common question amongst drivers: “What’s the difference between seasonal tires and winter tires?” The biggest distinction is traction. Traction may not be a major safety component to winter driving for those who live in mild conditions year round. But here in Saskatchewan, where winter’s frigid temperatures and blankets of snow hang around for months on end, it’s absolutely essential. All-season tires tend to be the factory standard on most vehicles. These tires perform well on pavement or gravel during warm, dry and lightly wet conditions. The best performance from all-season tires is during temperatures at or above 7C — so, really not during a Saskatchewan winter! There are a few components of winter tires that separate them from seasonal. First, the tread rubber. A great performing tire that tackles winter like a pro should remain flexible, even in -40C temperatures, and “grippy,” especially when encountering ice. Winter tires are created from quality rubber that does just that, whereas summer and all-season tires are made with a tougher rubber that stiffens up in cold weather, resulting in poor traction. A tire’s tread depth is also an indicator of traction. Winter tires have deep treads that reduce snow buildup, and ensure the tires grip the surface of the road, regardless of the elements. These tires also have intricate tread patterns, which help channel snow and expel slush. Ever wonder what those numerous slits are throughout your winter tires’ tread? Those are biting edges, and further help the tires grab the surface of the road. All-season tires do not have this feature. Where we live, winter tires are more of an essential safety measure rather than just another automobile option. By investing in a quality set of tires and using your common sense, your winter driving should be a lot safer and less stressful.

Let’s see a quick show of hands: how many of you have an emergency winter kit in your vehicle? No shame if you don’t — that’s why we’ve made this handy list for you to consult. A simple kit stowed in your vehicle just may help save your life should you ever meet an unfortunate incident and find yourself stuck or stranded in your vehicle in our frigid winter weather. DIY: Assemble Your Winter Roadside Survival Kit YOUR SURVIVAL KIT SHOULD INCLUDE: •
sturdy bin to store items

long-lasting food, such as energy bars, and water in plastic bottles (they won’t crack when the water freezes)
•
blanket(s)

extra socks, mitts, hats, and sweaters

knife

compact or foldable shovel and an extra snow brush/scraper

simple toolkit (multi-head screwdriver, pliers, adjustable wrench and some duct tape)

While this kit will give you peace of mind, a few winter driving safety tips will also help. Try to keep your gas tank at least half full, especially when travelling long distances. If you become stuck in snow,

make sure the exhaust pipe is free from obstruction. Stay in your car and run the engine for 10 minutes every hour. Crack the window for fresh air. Finally, stay calm: a level head is necessary for survival.
