It is this time of year, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who made our success possible, it is in the holiday spirit we say simply but sincerely: “Thank you and best wishes for the holiday season!” It is with thankful hearts, we share our success back with our community. We are fortunate to be able to give back to the community all year round, but are especially grateful in the holiday season.

These are a few of our favorite things... “Christmas is such a special holiday for my family. Giving baking, donations and my time to those in need shows the true meaning of the Christmas spirit.
Adopt–a–Family: Throughout the year, our staff host fundraising luncheons so they are able to provide a Merry Christmas for families who may be going through a difficult time. We believe every child deserves a Merry Christmas!
I take my children shopping for the Adopt–a–family so they understand the gift of giving to someone in need.” –Donna Rooney, Business Relations
Festival of Trees: “ I am grateful to work for a company that supports community events like the Family Place Festival of Trees because this community is our family. I love that we can be creative, spread holiday cheer, and support the community all at once.” Left to right: Stacey Cameron, Marie Ballenas (kneeling), Tana Torkelson, Tanisha Quintyn (kneeling), Debbie Chessall, and Melissa Bocian
“Sharing Christmas cheer in my Community is something I look forward to every year. There is no better feeling than knowing you have made someone’s day, week, or even year just by taking the time to give back during the holiday season.” –Megan Paxman, Member Service 2 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
Care Homes: Every year, WCU staff get together and donate personal time and money to bake Christmas goodies for local care homes. They also provide a present for seniors without family and who wouldn’t otherwise have a gift under the tree.

Open the louvers slightly to increase ventilation, or a full 180 degrees allowing maximum sunlight into your home. Suncoast Screen Enclosures offers a screened-in, outdoor area that allows you to enjoy your deck, pool, spa or patio without the sense of being enclosed in an indoor space.

Calming Lavender Lotion This makes the perfect DIY gift for the holidays or if you’re simply looking for a natural body lotion option. Are you ready to make a batch of homemade lotion? You will need an electric mixer, about 3 minutes and 3 ingredients — pure shea butter , pure coconut oil and lavender essential oil (or any other essential oil).
Ingredients 1 cup pure shea butter, softened (in microwave or double boiler) 1 cup pure coconut oil 1/3 cup arrowroot powder* (optional- adding arrowroot results in moist, glowing skin without an oily residue)
75-100 drops of lavender or other essential oil (use more or less to your liking)
Instructions Place all ingredients in a stand mixer or large bowl. Beat until soft peaks form. Transfer to glass storage containers and you’re done!
Notes This recipe makes a large batch — at least 20 oz.
If you like a thicker lotion, try adding 1-2 tsp. melted beeswax pastilles to the mixing bowl (if adding beeswax, omit the arrowroot powder)

groundbreaking event occurred in Saskatoon this past summer that is capturing serious attention. On the evening of July 24, more than 600 people gathered at TCU Place in Saskatoon to support a fundraiser that will assist the innovative Neural Health Project at the University of Saskatchewan. The memorable evening included a VIP reception, numerous entertainers, a nutritious meal, speeches and shared stories, a silent and live auction, a dance and unparalleled comradery and compassion that affected everyone present.
University of Saskatchewan) and Mike Babcock (head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs) the event was born from shared personal tragedies. When longtime friends and champions of previous causes, Maltman and Babcock lost two people — Ian Buckwold and Jordan Chartier — within weeks of each other because of the effects of mental illness, they decided to do something for mental health. Maltman admits, “I said to Mike ‘It has to be more than a fundraiser. We’re not just going to raise money, give it to a group and then walk away.’ ”

“We need to create awareness around mental health and let people know it’s okay to ask for help. It’s devastating there is not an avenue for people to go get help. Clara has really created some awareness lately and we’ve got to keep the momentum going.” —Jennifer Jones, Canadian Olympic Curling Champion the whole area of integrative medicine, there were so many components that lend themselves beautifully to a more complete approach to mental illness. We started to talk about reframing the actual name from one of mental illness to one of neural health.” The Neural Health Project aims to take a “more upstream approach to mental illness,” admits Maltman, who also understands research is expensive. Starting with a few small successful dinners where attendees paid $1,000 per plate to support this initiative, Maltman says “we knew we were onto something.”

“Mental health affects one in five people each year, costing Canadians at least $50 billion annually. In 2011, more than $6 billion of this cost was due to lost productivity. The gap in mental health investment has been well documented nationally and the Neural Health Project in intended to help close that gap.” —Excerpt from ONE VOICE event program

Enter the ONE VOICE event, named because “no matter who you are, we all need to come together in one voice and create that critical mass of people to say ‘we want something different; we want something more complete in this area,’ ” declares Maltman. Through his connections and efforts, Babcock brought in many celebrities and well known athletes. “We obviously hit a nerve, both in that community and the community of Saskatchewan,” says Maltman, who praises the “dream team” organizing committee, volunteers and sponsors who supported the event, led by Cameco. Maltman is ecstatic about the more than $1 million raised through the event. “Through a true collaborative Saskatchewan effort, the ONE VOICE event was a total success… it almost became like a sacred space of sharing;

“I thought tonight was probably the most significant event I’ve ever been involved in. When you share, you connect with people and when they hear you talk without shame and embarrassment, all of a sudden they feel a little more likely to come out and share. Those stories tonight will change lives. If you find out you have the power to save people’s lives or change people’s lives simply by telling your story, and you are given the platform to do that, wouldn’t you say you’re obligated to do that? It takes so little effort. Shame on me if I don’t. Antidepressants saved my life. Sick, not weak — that’s my mantra.” —Michael Landsberg, TSN talk show host and sports journalist “I don’t care who we are, I consider us all on the spectrum of neural health. I don’t think there’s one of us who hasn’t felt at some point in our lives anxious, or kind of down or defensive or worried about our dark thoughts… I consider this something we’re all in together. We’ve all been affected by a colleague or a family member who has been ill.” —Dr. Dee Dee Maltman “I never thought I would be on stage talking about my anxiety, but I just really want to help other people. I want them to know it’s okay to have a mental illness; you’re not alone and it’s definitely not something to be embarrassed about. When I was younger, I kept it to myself and only me and my family knew. Three or four years ago, I started telling my friends and being more open about it. It made me so much happier; I’m not embarrassed to talk about it… it’s such a relief and such a nice feeling… you can just be open and be yourself.” —Kaitlyn Hrudey, daughter of Donna & Kelly Hrudey, former NHL goalie Photo toP left Michael Landsberg & Clara Hughes Bottom left Kelly Hrudey & daughter, Kaitlyn

“I’ve been affected by mental illness in my family and friends, so I know what it does. Nobody is perfect and that’s what this event is for, and they need to know they’re not alone. Now people are accepting it’s a disease like any other disease. This is the start of a conversation and other events; it will be good.” —Jared Cowan, NHL Ottawa Senators “When you say ‘one voice,’ we aren’t here just to entertain, but we want to come alongside to get this message out there to really bring change to hurting people who struggle with mental illness. It’s such an awesome opportunity seeing people coming together to support this, seeing the heart of the people coming together to meet this need.” —Jackie and Jason Heistad of Jacky Bell & Thunder, entertainers

That’s what made it so special.” Following the poignant video Somewhere in Mind about the tragic impact on the Chartier and Buckwold families, many shared stories melted hearts in the crowd,
resulting in tears and standing ovations. Canadian Olympian Clara Hughes, who spoke openly about her family’s struggles, admitted to trying to “outride” her eating disorder and depression. “I thought I could give myself so much physical pain that I could numb the emotional pain inside. champagne lunch and program at Kreos Aviation, and in Regina, a reception, dinner and program at Conexus Arts Centre. The events were both a thank you to the people of the province for their support of the Children’s Hospital and a public affirmation of the joint commitment of the two organizations to the construction, maintenance and staffing of the Child Life Zone. Brynn Boback-Lane, president and CEO of CHFS, commented, “It’s pretty impressive as a person that this man [Garth Brooks] is taking time out of his family’s vacation to take care of Saskatchewan’s children. This is a lifeimpacting gift; the ripple effects will be felt for generations. To say our foundation is grateful is an understatement.” The Child Life Zone will be a 3,000 sq.ft. therapeutic play area staffed by certified Child Life Specialists. “It will be a unique place where the children can play, learn, laugh and connect,” explained BobackLane. “They will learn to cope through play, education and self-expression.” By addressing the psychological wellbeing of patients and their families, the Child Life Zone will have a huge impact on the ability of both the child and their family to heal. “The thing with the zones is they believe in the medicines that cannot be bought,” said Brooks. “What they are finding out in these zones is that the recovery time for these kids — because they are getting to be kids — is half of the time that it is without it. They are also finding that their pain medications are cut in half, too.” “Teammates is a remarkable foundation,” explains Chase. “All the money donated to it goes to the project being funded; there are no administration costs or anything. When a player makes a donation to Teammates for Kids, either through a direct donation or through
a game-related commitment — such as power play goals — that donation is matched by a group of investors as well as by Garth Brooks himself.”

Chocolate Torte
with a Crunchy Pecan Oat Crust
A
bsolutely no one will know this is a healthier version of a chocolate pie! Gluten and dairy free, you can enjoy this one with very little guilt. It is decadent, indulgent and simple to make!
• • • • • •
1 cup of pecans (hazelnuts or walnuts would work too!) 1/4 cup melted coconut oil 3 Tbsp. maple syrup 1/2 cup almond flour 1 cup gluten free rolled oats Pinch of salt
Preheat the oven to 350 F. In your food processor, chop the nuts until very fine, then mix all ingredients together until combined. Grease a 9-inch pie pan with coconut oil and scoop the nut mixture onto the pie pan. Press down with your hands to create the crust; the more packed down the crust, the better! It should go all the way up the sides of the pan, just like a regular pie crust. Poke a few fork holes in the bottom and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Set aside while you prepare the filling.
FILLING: • • • • • • • •
1–1/2 cup cashews 3/4 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup coconut oil – melted 1/3 cup raw cacao powder 1/2 bag of Enjoy Life Chocolate Chunks, melted 2 tsp. vanilla extract Pinch of salt 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee
In a high speed blender, blend all ingredients together (if you don’t have a high speed blender, you might want to soak them overnight). If the mixture is too thick, add a bit of almond milk to thin. Pour the filling into the crust and don’t forget to lick the spoon; this filling is to die for! Freeze uncovered for an hour. Cover with tin foil and freeze overnight. Let it sit out for 15 minutes before cutting. Serve with whipped coconut cream and shaved chocolate.

FOCUS ON FAMILY
Finding in the
Joy
Winter Season By Mandi Mazer
T
he weather outside might be a bit frightful, but it is high time we embrace our Saskatchewan winters and start some new outdoor traditions. We are fortunate to live in the “Land of the Living Skies” with spectacular winter scenery that many of us take for granted. Bundle up nice and warm, grab some friends or your family, and instead of moping and complaining about the winter, get outside with a heart full of gratitude and appreciate the beauty!
30 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
FOCUS ON FAMILY
There are a ton of winter sports to get involved in. Strap on some skates and enjoy Weyburn’s free public skating courtesy of the Weyburn Young Fellows Club. Connect with some friends and try out curling, hockey or snow soccer. Remember you are never too old to learn a new sport!
of different filling options, enjoy a makeyour-own-pizza night with the kids, or have a fancy five course Italian feast. Whatever theme you decide for your dinner party, remember the best, most memorable part of the evening is quality time spent with friends and family.
Perhaps you are more into speed and adventure. Bundle up the family, pour some hot chocolate in a thermos, and hit Signal Hill for some tobogganing or find some friends to go snowmobiling. We live in an area pristine for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice fishing.
Spend the winter months getting physically fit and check out a new class. Whether it is yoga, Pilates, a bootcamp class, weightlifting or creating a gym program for yourself, stay active through the winter and you will feel amazing come summer.
Spend the day at home, building snow forts, snowmen, snow angels and having snow ball fights. Embrace the feeling of play and being young at heart! If you have children, they will never forget these fun memories with mom and dad. If you don’t have children, host an adult’s only snow day complete with Peppermint Schnapps and hot cocoa and fort building contests; the adults will love playing outside too! As the weather gets extra chilly, there are some great activities to do inside with your friends, family or even just spending some “me” time. Invite your friends over for a dinner party and make it a theme night. There are a ton of options! Pretend it is sunny summertime and throw a Mexican fiesta complete with margaritas, host a roll-your-own sushi night with lots
Finally, begin that hobby or project you have been thinking about for awhile. Whether that is starting a blog, journaling, knitting, colouring and painting, puzzles
or scrapbooking, there is so much to accomplish there is never a reason to say, “I am bored!” Enjoy your cozy days indoors; be grateful for your warm home in the winter months. Put on some comfy clothes, build a living room fort, and have a movie day with the kids with hot cocoa and popcorn! Have a day to yourself, reading a new book, making a new recipe and having a warm bath. Winter is a beautiful season if we just stop to enjoy the moments and memories we can create. Remember, when it is cold and snowy, you have two choices: grumble and shovel or smile and make snow angels!

Top 5 Ways to Discover Australia
While Australia’s cities are rich with culture and cuisine, exploring the country’s spectacular nature — from rainforests that grow out of sand to a sacred sandstone monolith — is an essential part of any trip down under. Here we share five highlights, including a tour that blends sipping with scenery. 34 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
Drive the Great Ocean Road From the limestone rock stacks known as The Twelve Apostles to legendary surf breaks and seaside villages, the Great Ocean Road features the kind of spectacular scenery designed for road-trip loving travellers. Stretching 300 km along Australia’s southeast coast, the road offers dramatic views of the southern ocean and an array of activities. Explore the dormant volcano of Tower Hill, a wildlife haven with free-roaming koalas, emus, black swans and other species. Surf, dive and sea kayak all along the coast, replenishing with some of the country’s finest dining. Prefer walking to driving? The Great Ocean Walk shadows the Great Ocean Road, passing through lush national parks and coastal landscape. Guided walking tours offer single or multi-day hikes, complete with historic shipwreck sites, deserted beaches, and from June through September, the chance of spotting whales.
TRAVELSCAPES
Watch the Sunset Over Uluru
Explore the World’s Largest Sand Island
Rising 348 metres out of flat desert, this monolith sandstone formation is one of the most photographed sites in Australia, drawing people from around the world to capture its stunning beauty and shifting colours. Located close to the centre of the country, Uluru is a deeply sacred place to the local Anangu people, who consider it home of the Earth Mother. The best way to tour the site is with an Aboriginal guide, viewing caves at the base with petroglyphs taken over tens of thousands of years. At sunset, the rock transforms in colour as the light shifts, creating a dazzling natural display. Uluru is a World Heritage Site and the centrepiece of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which also features spectacular dome-shaped rocks.
Massive dunes, towering rainforests and more than 100 freshwater lakes make World Heritage Site Fraser Island a must-see Australian destination. The world’s largest sand island, Fraser spans 120 kms along the coast of Queensland and is home to an incredibly diverse range of wildlife, including dingoes, snakes, bats, wild horses, sugar gliders and more than 300 bird species. Named for its length, 75 Mile Beach features coloured sandstone cliffs, the famous Maheno shipwreck and Champagne pools, bubbling rock pools that, unlike the ocean, are safe for swimming. Rocky outcrop Indian Head is a popular viewing spot for seeing turtles, dolphins, sharks and other sea life. Inland, explore freshwater lakes, creeks and rainforests that grow on sand dunes. With no sealed roads, island excursions must be done with a 4WD, either on your own or with a guided tour.

Know Your AUSSIE SLANG No trip to Australia is complete without learning the local lexicon. Here, a guide to some of the slang you’ll hear down under.
BARBIE: Barbecue TOGS: Bathing suit PASH: A long passionate kiss MOZZIE: Mosquito SHE’LL BE RIGHT: Everything will be all right SWEET AS: Sweet, awesome. Aussies often use ‘as’ at the end of adjectives for emphasis. RIGHT Urulu
Take a Wilderness Safari in Daintree National Park One of the most ancient ecosystems on the planet, Daintree National Park is in the far north of Queensland, and like Uluru, sacred to the local Aboriginal people. With more than 18,000 plant species and a variety of animal species — including the Bennett’s tree kangaroo, cassowary, crocodile, giant blue Ulysses butterfly and the eastern water dragon — Daintree draws nature lovers to its astounding biodiversity year round. The park features two main sections: Cape Tribulation, where rainforest meets white sandy beaches, and Mossman Gorge, where rock pools, granite boulders and the clear waters of the Mossman River are surrounded by lush forest. Guided safari tours are the best way to experience Daintree, as your guide can share details of the park’s significance, both biologically and culturally.
Tour the Wineries South Australia’s wineries produce more than half of the country’s wine, with a wide range of varieties made possible by the area’s diverse climate and geography. With 18 wine regions and a multitude of vineyards accessible from Adelaide, wine touring is an excellent way to discover what makes these wines world famous while experiencing the beauty of the south. Vineyards such as Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra are highlights of South Australia, as well as the Barossa Valley, which boasts some of the world’s best Shiraz, and the Clare Valley, where you can follow the ‘Riesling trail’ by bike.

THE HOME OFFICE is the Way of the Future By Henny Buffinga

ith most jobs needing only a computer, phone and Internet connection, more people are working from home than ever before. Work/life balance is a hot topic when it comes to business trends, with millennials and Gen-Y workers stating it’s one of their main priorities when choosing a job. According to the WorkShift initiative, led by Calgary Economic Development, there are about 4.3 million Canadians with jobs that are compatible with working from home. Allowing these people to work out of office, the report states, would have a bottom-line economic benefit of $53 billion across the country, as well as community perks such as reduced traffic and the resulting lower carbon-emissions. As an example of the savings for individual businesses, the report estimates a company that has 250 telecommuting employees would save $3 million a year. Telecommuting saves employers more than just overhead and rent money; employees who work from home are happier, and thus more productive. According to Globalworkplaceanalytics. com, 36 per cent of workers would prefer working from home to a pay raise, and 80
per cent of employees consider working from home a job perk. With more than two thirds of employers reporting increased productivity among their telecommuters, it’s clear telecommuting is the way of the future. According to Smallbiztrends.com, 69 per cent of U.S. entrepreneurs start their businesses from home, and many have employees who work from their own homes as well. For entrepreneurs, starting a business costs an average of $15,000, and cutting the overhead by working from home allows more freedom for the business owner in those important first few years. For all the telecommuters, planning a specific workspace in the home is a must, not only for productivity, but also to maintain the boundaries of work and home life. When it comes to planning a home office, Chris Medeiros, co-owner of Response I.T. in Kingston, advocates doing your homework before you commit to the electronics in your home office, since they are the most important tools you will need. “Getting the proper foundation for the office is the most important thing,” Medeiros explains. “You need to make
AT HOME
sure you cover the basics, such as the right computer for your needs, anti-virus software, surge protectors, that kind of thing. Pricing everything ahead of time is a good idea. You need to be careful that you don’t just buy the cheapest printer in the store, because the ink cartridges for that printer might cost $200. You think you’re saving, but you’re not.” Software such as Skype, Microsoft Word and Google Docs are invaluable to creating a cohesive virtual work environment for employees. And for people just starting up, Medeiros recommends getting your own domain name to give a professional first impression via email. He points out that if you are using a provider’s email account and you switch providers down the line, you may lose out on important communications. He also recommends a good signature, stating that it’s the little things that can add up to a more professional image. With a major hindrance to productivity being workplace distraction, working from home in an environment workers can control helps them raise productivity levels while giving them the work/life balance they crave.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes By Tonya Lambert Photos Images by Gillies
Weyburn and area residents kicked off the month of November with a tremendous effort to help those in the community touched by type 1 diabetes. Weyburn’s Annual Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes is one of more than 70 such events that occur each year in Canada. Weyburn and area has several young people with type 1 diabetes, and the money raised by the walk is used by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to fund research aimed at improving treatment, developing a cure and better preventing the development of the illness.
T
ype 1 diabetes affects in excess of 300,000 Canadians. One of two types of diabetes, it is often contracted during childhood, though it can develop at any age. It is thought to be the result of a viral infection which causes the body to mistakenly attack itself and destroy the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin. Without insulin, the body cannot turn sugar into energy and it starves.
48 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
People with type 1 diabetes must carefully keep track of their blood glucose levels. “Layne has to watch what he eats and check his blood regularly,” says Jackie Watson, whose son Layne developed type 1 diabetes nearly three years ago. This is done to ensure his blood sugar levels don’t drop too low or rise too high, either of which can be life-threatening. Layne and others with type 1 diabetes get insulin through daily injections or an insulin pump.
COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
The Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes has been taking place in Weyburn for six years and the 2015 walk was one of the biggest so far. More than 200 area residents participated in the walk which began at City Centre Mall. The many families who took part in this year’s event welcomed the relatively warm weather for the fun-filled walk. This year, the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes raised $20,000. This included a sizeable donation of $2757 from E. Bourassa & Sons.
Since the inception of the walk, E. Bourassa & Sons, which has two employees with children who have type 1 diabetes, has made the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) its primary charity partner. In the summer, the company holds fundraising barbeques every Wednesday for six weeks. Hot dogs and hamburgers are sold and 100 per cent of the proceeds go to JDRF. The barbeques are entirely run by staff volunteers, with the Weyburn Beavers helping out on two occasions this year. “It’s crazy busy, but I absolutely love doing it,” exclaims Seann Riley, marketing coordinator for E. Bourassa & Sons. “The best part of the barbeques is our competitors, Young’s Equipment and Southern Industrial, make an effort to come out every Wednesday, even doing pre-orders to ensure all their staff has the opportunity to participate. It’s really nice to see everyone come together to support such a worthwhile cause.” The funds raised by the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes are used by JDRF to fund innovative research and clinical trials to improve the quality of life for those touched by type 1 diabetes. In 2014, JDRF supported more than 50 clinical studies. The 2016 Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes will take place in Weyburn on November 6. More information on the Walk and JDRF is available at www.jdrf.ca. TOP LEFT: Back: Lee Watson, Nadya McKim and Ryder Watson Front: Rylan Watson and Layne Watson; TOP RIGHT: Seann Riley from E. Women of Achievement in Weyburn
Women know how to juggle. Whether pursuing an education, raising a family, advancing in a career or starting up and running a business, a woman must plan, adapt and keep all aspects of life in focus. Whatever they tackle, women can be counted on to accomplish tremendous goals despite the challenges.
W
hen it comes to pursuing an education and choosing a career, national statistics prove women have made significant gains. More than 70 per cent of women now attain some level of post-secondary education compared to 40 per cent a generation ago — and education is often a crucial factor in business success. More than one-third of self-employed Canadians are female and their “survival rate” is often higher because they tend to stay in business longer. Women are tenacious; simply put, they hate giving up!

M&M Concessions Taking Care of All Your Catering Requirements By Mandi Mazer Photos Vanessa Lanktree Photography

eyburn is truly fortunate to have Myrna McFadden as an entrepreneurial woman in our community. She has poured her passion and talent into M&M Concessions, and created a very special business in the community. Myrna became the owner of M&M Concessions 31 years ago, and quickly realized this was going to transform into a lifelong career. She slowly transformed M&M Concessions into one of Weyburn’s best catering companies. You may not realize you have enjoyed Myrna’s wonderful food — she caters so many events in Weyburn and area. M&M Concessions caters small and large events in a variety of venues and they will work with your budget to create a memorable experience. Weddings, banquets, family reunions, conventions, holiday parties and office lunches — in and out of house — are just a few of their specialties. Myrna is a true family woman; in fact, the reason she entered the catering world was to support her five children as a single mother. Myrna admits as a young woman she “couldn’t even boil water,” so her family was very surprised when she got into the catering industry. However, with five small children, she had to learn cooking skills quickly and this soon developed into a labor of love. When you talk to Myrna about her now

grown children and grandchildren, love simply radiates out of her. She contributes a great deal of her success in the catering industry to her family and their support behind the scenes. Clearly, a business that has succeeded for more than 30 years is a success story. Myrna is an incredibly dedicated businesswoman, and offers this advice to young women in Weyburn wanting to start their own business: “Do your homework before jumping in financially, emotionally and physically. Find a mentor in your field of work, and ask for questions, advice and support.” Myrna and her team have some exciting events coming up this next year. They served more than 400 people a delicious prime rib dinner at the October MMA Fights. The Gold Wings are hosting a 10-day event in April, where M&M Concessions will be catering daily. In July, the SJHL Awards will have Myrna’s team catering another group of 900 people. Even though these large events are exciting for the team at M&M, Myrna stays passionate about her smaller events; catering to local people in Weyburn is a favourite part of the job. M&M Concessions has the staff, the equipment and most importantly, the experience to make your next occasion a success. Whether you need catering for five people or 1,000, they have done it all and are excited to help you plan your next event. M&M Concessions PO Box 971 Weyburn 306.842.6066 306.861.9551

The Void Weyburn’s Premiere Home Décor, Jewellery and Baby Boutique By Mandi Mazer Photos Vanessa Lanktree Photography
T
he Void is a store for anyone wanting to make the women in their lives happy — women who want beautiful jewellery, clothing and handbags; women who want beautifully decorated homes; women who are moms or moms-to-be. Owner Chantal Brown and her parents started the business 11 years ago in Weyburn and have been going strong ever since. Chantal realized there was a void in Weyburn; women wanted quality products for themselves, their homes and their children, but there was nowhere local to find these products. The Void strives to provide high quality, fashionable and functional products, and Chantal has significantly expanded her brand offerings since the business first opened its doors. The store now carries the stunning Hillberg and Berk jewellery collection, Matt and Nat Vegan Handbags and Taxi Shoewear — all handpicked by Chantal’s staff of amazing women who know how to keep up with today’s changing trends. Women will be excited to learn the popular Silver Jeans and Miss Me Denim will be arriving in Spring 2016. Along with their ever-expanding collections, The Void offers an incredible selection of products for moms and expecting moms. Chantal’s staff is knowledgeable about these products, and customers appreciate their helpfulness. They can assist new
54 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
moms in selecting products that will create a happy, healthy environment for kids and babies. There are so many products for babies and children on the market, it is hard to choose, so put your trust in these ladies. They can advise you with post-partum, breastfeeding and baby wrapping and wearing products. Chantal has a two-year-old son, so she has tested most of the products out herself and fully believes in them! The experience you get at The Void cannot be matched. Shopping there makes you feel like you are hanging out at a friend’s house, trying on clothes or asking your girlfriends for advice on childcare products. Chantal encourages her staff to have fun, which creates a beautiful rapport with clients like you! If you are thinking about starting a business in Weyburn, take Chantal’s
advice: “Everything takes time. You may not have a lot of money to invest, so start small and expand little by little. Bree also credits her supportive husband, Gary, and knows she couldn’t excel in the world of real estate without him. In the real estate industry and on the home front, it is challenging to find time for herself, but Bree loves being around people and using her potential to help clients. With half a dozen years in the real estate field under her belt, Bree is still excited to go to work everyday. “Every single day is different. You’re able to meet people in every stage and transition period of life. From the first time home buyer to a couple transitioning to a condo, to a single mom or dad finding a new home because of divorce, you are able to hear your clients’ stories and help make their lives easier with a smooth transition into a new home.” Bree knows she wouldn’t be where she is today without her clients and is very humble when she speaks of her success in the industry.
Bree considers it an honour each time a client allows her to become a part of the biggest purchase of their lives. She is committed to providing excellent service before and after the sale is complete. From the very first meeting to long after the sale has been closed, Bree maintains regular contact with her clients. Brady’s House of Flowers Weyburn’s First Choice for Flowers By Mandi Mazer Photos Vanessa Lanktree Photography
I
t has been a year of change for Sarah Siwy and her family. The Christmas season is a busy time in the floral industry, and December 1 marks the first anniversary of Sarah and Francis becoming the new owners of Brady’s House of Flowers. Brady’s House of Flowers is an iconic business that has served Weyburn and surrounding area for more than 60 years with quality floral products, beautiful home décor lines and exceptional customer service. Sarah is highly aware the impact her business has on her customers’ lives. Welcoming new babies or new neighbours, congratulating graduates, brides and grooms and saying farewell to family and loved ones, flowers are gestures that show our thoughts and feelings and express our gratitude. Seeing multiple generations of repeat customers and being a small part of major events in their lives is one of the things Sarah loves most about this business. Starting your own business can be risky, and while Sarah encourages new entrepreneurs to follow their dreams, she also recommends doing your homework. Finding a mentor in the same business for advice, talking to your bank and making a strong business plan is only the beginning. Marketing, merchandising, inventory management, budgeting and accounting are vital to business stability and growth.Sarah loved Brady’s House of Flowers the moment she stepped through the door. Her vision became reality when she acquired the

flower shop, a transition made easier when many of the original employees chose to continue their employment with Sarah. The previous owners also continued working alongside this ambitious entrepreneur, mentoring her in this unique industry. Today, Sarah’s team is reliable, passionate about their work and dedicated to offering distinctive floral designs. Some exciting new changes are happening at Brady’s House of Flowers. Watch for new product lines arriving in the next few months, including Wildly Delicious, a selection of gourmet foods. Stay tuned for their upcoming announcement on Facebook about “Foodie Fridays,” where customers will get to sample this fabulous new line. Sarah also plans to offer various classes for her customers starting in the new
year. Customers can look forward to the Build Your Own Terrarium class where everyone will go home with a beautiful hand crafted design! Running your own business can be very gratifying, and Sarah and her team work hard to exceed customer expectations. In addition to fresh flowers and beautiful arrangements, Brady’s House of Flowers is continually expanding their inventory of distinctive gifts, gourmet foods, home décor and beautiful gift baskets. Weyburn Pharmasave Your Hometown Pharmacy Just Keeps Getting Better By Mandi Mazer Photos Vanessa Lanktree Photography

eyburn Pharmasave is proud to be 100 per cent locally owned and operated. Laura Resler and Krista Missal are managing partners and full-time pharmacists at the Weyburn location — one of the reasons Pharmasave is such a great place to shop. Having the business owners on the floor working face to face with customers and staff fosters a high quality environment. This is proven through the regional Pharmasave Store of the Year Award they have won twice, once in 2013 and again in 2014. Krista and Laura have a hand in everything to do with the store: merchandising, sales, customer service, managing employees, meetings and

providing pharmacy services. Along with these daily duties and more, they run a second location in Radville. They share the goal of creating a positive shopping experience. When Laura and Krista became storeowners in 2010, they made a few changes to improve the business. They brought different ideas to the table and were excited to direct the store towards success. Laura and Krista agree on leading by example: “You can’t be a boss or a leader to staff if you aren’t willing to work full-time; your employees need to see you giving it your all.” However, the two partners agree the major driving force behind the store’s
WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT
success is their staff. Laura and Krista have made a point of hiring individuals with the same goals, ambitions and positive attitudes to serve their customers even better. Their pharmacy and front store staff is mainly compromised of strong, dedicated women who get along great as a team. Laura and Krista believe if you want to build a successful business, you have to be authentic and true to yourself. They offer these words of wisdom for those thinking about becoming an entrepreneur: “A lot of women attempt to start a business, however you need to do your research. You need to read books and learn from mentors. Learn about crunching numbers, learn how to
run a business and talk to people in the business you want to be in.” Krista continually revisits the principles set in Dale Carnegie’s famous book How to Win Friends and Influence People. Looking forward to 2016, these two ambitious entrepreneurs have similar goals to continue learning and growing professionally and taking on new challenges. Weyburn is fortunate to have these two professionals in our community. In addition to being accomplished pharmacists, Laura and Krista are mothers, wives and volunteers to many organizations in Weyburn and Yellow Grass. They attribute their ability to balance home and work life to each other and being able to work as an amazing team that can rely on each other. By sharing the same vision and goals, working hard and expecting their staff to do the same, they continue to create an environment of success. amily has always been important to Tessa Dupuis. In fact, it was family that set her on the path to a new career as an entrepreneur, certified nail technician, pedicurist and body sugar specialist. For years, Tessa had worked in finance and thought she always would — until one day her request was turned down to take time off to attend her daughter’s basketball tournament. “I didn’t like how my family time was limited because I had to work according to someone else’s schedule,” explains Tessa. “I wanted to be in charge of my own time.” Loving fashion, accessories and makeup, Tessa had always had a passion for the beauty industry. Her sister, Tammy — who had always recognized Tessa’s artistic bent — supported Tessa’s desire to open her own salon. “When I told Tammy what I wanted to do, she believed in me and gave me the courage to pursue it,” says Tessa. “Tammy has her own business, Sugar’d, which is a chain in lower mainland B.C. I am so proud of her and she inspires me in business.” Tessa began by charting her goals. “When I was planning the business, I made a vision board of bright swatches of colour and beside each one I wrote a list of goals,” she explains. “I keep it in my office at home. It’s so powerful to watch it grow.” Community Features helped Tessa draw up her business plan. “Doing the research and putting together

a solid business plan is very important if you want your business to succeed,” says Tessa. “Community Features is an excellent and valuable asset.” Tessa went to Regina to take her certification as a nail technician. Her sister, Tammy, taught her the basics of sugaring. After that, she completed her education at Moore’s Sugaring Distribution and Training Inc. in Moose Jaw. Next, Tessa needed to set up her salon. She had a clear vision of the type of space she wanted to create. “My friend Heather van der Breggen was over one day and I went and changed into my favourite sundress,” says Tessa. “I came into the room and twirled around in and said to her, ‘I want to live in this every day.’ She said, ‘We can make that happen.’ Now, when I wear that dress to the salon, I blend in perfectly!” “When you walk into the salon, it’s like a breath of fresh air. It’s exciting, fun, upbeat! There are splashes of bright colours everywhere. Everything is high energy,” exclaims Tessa. “The walls and shelves are filled with the work of local artisans.”

Shawna Elmy Balancing Multiple Businesses & Family, Supporting Community By Mandi Mazer Photos Vanessa Lanktree Photography
F
or many women entrepreneurs, a successful business is all about work and life balance. This is certainly the case for Shawna Elmy, who owns and operates three companies in Weyburn along with raising a family. Recently, she bought Top Line Advertising, which she rebranded as Grand Image Design in May 2015. Along with this new business venture, Shawna also owns Sharp Tail Air and Sharp Tail Aviation. For entrepreneurs starting or thinking about starting a business, Shawna offers the following advice: “Do your research on the company; the more reading you can do the better. Read and talk to people about everything — banking, vendors and fields of operation of the day-to-day business. Shadow people and create mentors. Be prepared for surprises and growing pains along the way!” Goal setting is another important aspect of being a business owner. Shawna has similar goals for all three of her companies over the next year; she is excited to expand and develop her client base. Recently, Sharp Tail Air heard their hometown team, the Weyburn Red Wings, was experiencing financial trouble, so Shawna decided to help. She realized the team needed something big, quick and flashy to help with funding, and spawned the idea for an Edmonton Oilers Raffle. If you haven’t heard of this raffle yet,
64 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
get involved because this is a great prize opportunity and tickets will sell fast! Sharp Tail Air will be sending the lucky winner of this raffle to an Edmonton Oilers game in style. The whole weekend is a VIP Package; the winner will be flown to Edmonton in a private jet, driven around in luxury to the game, taken to a beautiful hotel and flown home the next day. Talk about a charitable Weyburn business! Shawna firmly believes in being a quality leader in the workplace and at home with her three children. Balancing three businesses, three children, a marriage and a social life is no easy task, but at the end of the day, everything falls into place. Shawna is clear family always comes first; her first two business ventures were run
from home so she could be at home with her children. When Shawna decided to start Grand Image Design, her children were welcome at the business anytime. They had always helped with airplane duties with the first two companies. “They do their homework at the shop and love to help with the businesses, whether it is embroidery, aircraft maintenance or even helping with the flying,” says their proud mother. In May 2015, Shawna assumed ownership of Top Line Advertising, rebranded it to Grand Image Design and created some great changes for the company. She recently moved into a much larger retail space, where she will

have more room to better display and highlight her quality products. Feedback on the new store has been positive. From the moment you step into Grand Image Design, you are treated like family. The staff makes your initial visit fun and informative. They realize selecting promotional items for your company or team can be overwhelming and time consuming. Grand Image Designs will be with you from start to finish, helping you choose a quality product and ensuring you love what you choose. Grand Image recently brought in three new lines: Reebok, CCM, MEE Sports and Leeds.

Along with working full time at Grand Image Design, Shawna spends her days running her other companies, Sharp Tail Air and Sharp Tail Aviation. Sharp Tail Air involves corporate aircraft management, consulting and maintenance, while Sharp Tail Aviation provides chartered executive aircraft anywhere in North America. Whether you own your own aircraft and need maintenance, or you want assistance with purchasing from Sharp Tail’s management team, staffing or managing your own aircraft, contact Sharp Tail Air and leave these critical decisions in the hands of Shawna’s trained professionals. Whatever level your aircraft needs may be, Sharp Tail Air can provide you and your company with an edge over competitors. Like anything worthwhile in life, owning and running multiple businesses represents a challenge. However, Shawna is grateful for the opportunity to build a life and career she loves with her children and husband by her side. ndria Brady has been executive director of the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop since 2006. This non-profit organization provides programs and services for people with intellectual disabilities. A staff of 16 currently supports more than 40 people from their two new facilities on Ebel Road in Weyburn. This role has been a natural fit for Andria, who is intent on making a difference. She is motivated to advocate for those often considered to be society’s most vulnerable, and believes they have the right to fully participate in all our community has to offer. Andria believes successful business leaders never give up on their dreams even when things get tough; they stay
focused on their passion. They empower their staff to be decision makers and then work alongside them rather than simply directing. Good leaders recognize their own limitations and surround themselves with people who have expertise, realizing that no one person can do it all. Running a business can be lonely at times and Andria feels it is important to have a support network to rely on. An advocate of continuous learning, Andria likes to challenge herself and cultivate interests outside of work. Earlier this year, Wor-Kin purchased the Harvest Pie Company to provide employment opportunities for those they support. They make four flavours of frozen pies from scratch as well as four flavours of fruit spreads. Saskatoon is definitely the most popular! Future plans

One of the biggest challenges of being a business owner is finding qualified employees, but Yvonne has had good luck in the past and is pleased with her current staff. “Someone has to make the final decisions,” Yvonne explains, “but it takes teamwork to build a successful business.” Having competent people in the shop gives her peace of mind and some flexibility with working hours. As hectic as the business can be, Yvonne relaxes occasionally with a good book and enjoys yard work at home on the farm where she lives, describing it as a good way to wind down.

Colleen came into my life 5 years ago, when I seemed to need her the most. I was at a very low point in my life and was looking and searching for guidance. I found out about her through a friend and went and saw her. She was amazing, she was positive and didn't just tell me what I wanted to hear but what I really needed to hear. She told me things about passed loved ones that only I would know. I always joke that she saved my life because I left that day a different person, with different goals and a different perspective on my life. Since then I have taken many of her workshops and classes and always come away with so much more than I expected over and over again. She is a very talented lady and wonderful teacher. Maria Ursu

LEGUEE FARMS
Award Winning Multi-Generational Family Farm By Lee Parent Photos Sarah Leguee
A
n old adage states: “money makes the world go round,” but when your livelihood is earned operating a multi-generational family farm, success is measured in many different ways — not just in dollars and cents. Accomplishments of all sizes need to be recognized and celebrated because it often means facing overwhelming challenges. Located between Weyburn and Fillmore, Leguee Farms is the epitome of a successful
74 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
family operated business. From receiving the Chamber of Commerce Golden Sheaf award in 2014, to celebrating the arrival of a son born to Jake and Stephanie Leguee in October 2015, to the conclusion of a bountiful harvest, there are many things to celebrate. Since the Golden Sheaf Award, the history of Leguee Farms has become common knowledge — from the early days when Donald and Elsie Leguee
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
started farming a section of land, to the 12,500 acres their son, Russ, and wife, Sharon, operate today. Then, along came the third generation: daughter, Sarah, who is totally involved in the day to day operations; son, Jake, who is the business manager; and daughter, Amber, who chose nursing as a career, but loves helping out on the farm. Jake’s wife, Stephanie, and Amber’s husband, Erik Nikolejsin, are definitely part of the team, too. This is truly a family farm.
L-R Stephanie Leguee, Jake Leguee, Erik Nikolejsin, Amber Nikolejsin, Sarah Leguee, Russ Leguee, Sharon Leguee
But there’s a lot more to this family than just farming. Considering Fillmore the centre of their social network, they are all involved in the community, volunteering for ambulance duty, firefighting and coaching sports. Most of the family members curl and play ball, and they “sled” and quad together whenever possible. Truck pulling is Russ’ newest obsession following years of enduro races and demo derbies, and truck pulling competitions have become a family affair. But no matter how hectic the schedule, this tight-knit family tries to gather in Sharon’s newly renovated kitchen every Friday for homemade pizza and conversation that isn’t just about the farm.

For the Leguee’s, farming is a way of life, a business, a science and a calling. It’s nonstop hard work, enormously satisfying and interspersed with moments of humour and joy. There are moments of romance, too; apparently Jake proposed to Steph during seeding by writing “Marry me” on the ground with Durum seed. That might come as a surprise to those who know Jake as an extremely business-minded numbers man, but he is definitely multi-talented. His blog and the family website he maintains are educational and entertaining, truly revealing the thoughts and emotions a farmer experiences. It’s surprising to some that Sarah is a farmer in her own right — not just the wife or daughter of one. Much of the daily operation falls under her direction. She explains: “Ultimately, Dad is in charge, but he’s fair and considers us all equal; it’s always been that way.” And as long as it is, Leguee Farms can look forward to many more years and generations of success and satisfaction.

Last year, they won the WEYBEX Award in the same category. “When we first got to the awards night and saw the great companies who were nominated, we didn’t think we would win; this is a huge recognition as it is the highest award in the province,” Ron and Patty humbly state. Listening to Ron and Patty speak about their staff, it is clear they fully believe their employees are their most valuable resource. They employ 25 to 30 students every summer, and many of those students come back season after season for employment because they are treated well and learn valuable tools on the job. Ron and Patty attribute their recent ABEX Award to their amazing staff. PAR Contracting fully believes part of their focus in business is working hand in hand with the community. They will continue supporting causes such as Habitat for Humanity and the Family Place. Loyalty to the community, a good heart and a moral character — Saskatchewan is incredibly fortunate to have PAR Contracting representing the province. Crossing the Water with Swayze Concrete Ltd. By Brook Thalgott
2014 was a difficult year for the Southeast, with major flooding devastating many parts of the region. The R.M. of Antler faced major repairs to the Redvers dam, needing an expert company to restore the dam properly. Swayze Concrete Ltd. was there to help immediately with advice, even before the project went to tender — a goodwill gesture from a local company wanting to help in a bad situation. 82 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

he project went to tender, and Swayze’s was awarded the contract. “Their work was professional, prompt and completed on time,” says R.M. of Antler’s administrator Melissa Roberts. “They worked with the engineer from AECOM and handled everything this project required.” After the dam work began, it became apparent that damage to the dam was more extensive than was first thought. Swayze Concrete Ltd. and the engineer expanded the repairs and the R.M. council was thoroughly impressed with the work during and after completion of the project. “The cleanup was immaculate,” says Jocelyn Hainsworth, R.M. of Antler’s deputy reeve. “The service Swayze’s provided was knowledgeable and the quality of their work was excellent. The Redvers Dam has never looked better.” The R.M. of Antler was so impressed with their work on the Redvers Dam project the company was awarded another project for reconstruction of a 60-yearold spillway in fall 2015. “The work was a repeat experience of the Redvers Dam project,” says Hainsworth. “They followed instructions and knew what Council wanted for the project.” An old concrete spillway was demolished and removed, and replaced with a new spillway reinforced to ensure extra stability.
“Swayze’s provided us with a time frame for completion and necessary curing period for the concrete,” says Roberts. “They delivered on all their commitments. Swazye’s is definitely a company that stands by their work and service. They take pride in their work as they rightfully should. The R.M. of Antler was most impressed with their performance and would recommend them to anyone who requires the services they provide.” Not only did Swayze Concrete Ltd. do their part for the R.M. of Antler, they also worked on many other projects related to the 2014 floods. “We’ve been so busy assisting local R.M.s with bridge and road repairs since last year,” says Randy Swayze’s. “Swayze‘s has personally rebuilt six bridges and be involved with 13 other bridge projects.” Their work has involved all facets of bridge work, including replacing piles, deck work and general bridge maintenance and repair. They have replaced wood bridges with more durable and long lasting concrete. “Concrete bridges are environmentally friendly and outlast wood,” says Randy. “Concrete bridges are designed to withstand the many elements they face in Saskatchewan.” In addition to their bridge work, Swayze’s has also helped R.M.s with low level crossings. By using concrete in areas with high runoff, road washouts can become a thing of the past — all with the help of the experts at Swayze Concrete

Ltd. crossings and culverts save time and plenty of money by avoiding washouts during runoffs,” says Randy. Swayze’s can handle more than just bridge and road work. A local institution in the Southeast, Swayze’s has been providing concrete and gravel since 1960. The company is also skilled in excavation, trenching and construction for water, sewer and storm mains along with basement excavation and completing emergency or routine repairs. They’re also involved in oilpatch services with their tandem/ backhoe unit, lease grading and mowing, plus contaminated soil excavation and hauling. They even handle specialized snow removal. “We’re now into the third generation of the Swayze family working in the company,” says Randy. “During our peak season, we’re a team of more than 80 with locations across southern Saskatchewan.” No matter what you need, from bridge and road work to concrete to gravel and everything in between, Swayze’s is just a phone call away. Women
of Harvest
By Mandi Mazer Photos Damara Lynn Photography
Women play an integral role in agriculture across the world, but it requires stepping up to the table to become recognized as a female leader in this industry. Enter Tiffany Martinka, the woman behind the #womenofharvest15 movement that has gone viral across Canada, the United States and other parts of the world!
T
iffany went to Twitter asking farm women to either share photos of themselves or asking men to snap a picture of their lady operating equipment at harvest time. Tiffany explains why she started this hashtag: “I felt women needed more recognition in the industry because they have always been the heart of the farm and the glue that holds it together. These women work long hard hours, playing many different roles, and they inspire me every single day.” Tiffany pours her heart and soul into work, especially when it comes to her

job with Monsanto Canada. She grew up on her family’s grain and cattle farm and has never lost her passion for this industry; in fact, it just seems to grow stronger every day. Tiffany says emotionally: “Have you ever had the chance to have a garden? You plant these tiny seeds, you nurture them, you watch them grow and produce food that you feed to your family. It is such a proud feeling. Well, magnify that feeling into acres and acres of land and it is the greatest sense of pride and accomplishment that all of us feel working in the agriculture industry.” A great leader and entrepreneur has many short and long term goals and Tiffany has many for the new year. Not surprisingly, these goals are specifically geared to help farm women meet their needs and grow their knowledge base. Women like Tiffany Martinka are truly an asset to the agriculture industry. 2016 Summer Games in Estevan: The Opportunity to Support a Legacy
T
he Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games committee is diligently working to ensure the legacy of the Games remain evident for many years to come, with new and improved facilities that will continue to support and promote healthy lifestyles. “Our principal legacy project is the new athletic field along with an eight lane

rubberized running track,” states the committee’s co-chair, Brian Senchuk. “The track was the inspiration to bring the Games to Estevan. We were talking at a meeting one night about the wonderful facilities in Estevan and the great job volunteers have done to provide for our athletes. Someone said ‘Now we just need a track,’ and the rest, as they say, is history!”
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
After commitments from the City of Estevan, Southeast Cornerstone School Division and Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division, the committee approached various local contractors. “Our business community is second to none in supporting projects for the betterment of our youth. We had numerous companies spend a great deal of time and resources to ensure the
dream of having a top-notch athletic field came to fruition. It is an amazing facility, already being utilized by people of all walks of life. It will serve our community well,” says Bernie Bjorndalen, co-chair of the Friends of the Games, the fundraising arm of the committee. The work will not be limited to the track and athletic field. The committee has plans to ensure the other 12 sport venues are ready for action in July 2016 and beyond the Games. “Our plan is to leave a legacy project behind at each of the venues, so when the citizens of Estevan look back over the years, they remember the 2016 Games fondly with a sense of pride in a job well done,” says Senchuk.
The physical legacies of the Games are not the only things the committee plans to leave behind. Events like the Games bring communities together and promote lifestyles of good health, as well as good citizens, good leaders, good character and friendships that will last a lifetime. “It will create a positive ripple through our community,” states Senchuk. “We are bringing together 2,000 volunteers to welcome close to 6,000 people to our community. We have a unique opportunity to promote Estevan and ensure everyone leaves feeling energized by his or her time here. It’s a great economic boost to our community as well. Studies from the 2014 Prince Albert Winter Games showed they

experienced a $3 million boost to their economy. That’s a feel-good story!” “We cannot achieve these goals on our own; we do need the support of our community to bring the 2016 Games to reality,” says Bjorndalen. “We’ve outlined the sponsorship opportunities in a format we know are a fit for everyone. As a sponsor, you will also be acknowledged and recognized before, during and after the Games. We are excited about partnering with the community to energize the 2016 Games in a way we will all be proud of. Estevan likes to roll out the red carpet. Give us a call to see how you can be part of creating the legacy.”

Hit the Road
in the 2016 Silverado 1500 By Brook Thalgott Photos Courtesy of Chevrolet
F
or the truck lover, the 2016 Silverado 1500 is a sight to behold. With its new muscular front-end design with sculpted hood, there are eight grille variations to choose from and each trim level has its distinctive look. There are LED accents on all models, and available 22-inch wheels with the custom options. The inside of the Chevy Silverado is just as impressive. Every Silverado 1500 can have its own Chevrolet MyLink™1 seven-inch touch-screen, able to play content from a smart phone or MP3 device. Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ lets owners use their smartphone in the vehicle right on their MyLink screen. Another option is the available heated steering wheel, which is great for our Saskatchewan winters. Under the hood, there’s an 8-speed transmission with 5.3L V8 on LTZ and High Country models. Although engine offerings have not changed for 2016, the Silverado 1500 feels stronger thanks to Hydra-Matic 8L90 transmission previously only offered with the top-level 6.2-liter V-8. The 8-speed automatic
96 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
transmission gives the 5.3-liter V-8 the power and muscle of the 6.2 without sacrificing miles per gallon. And, if you’re towing for work or play, the 5.3L V8 with the 8-speed transmission is just what you need. As for safety, the Silverado 1500 has IntelliBeam high-beam assist technology — important for highway driving and road trips. IntelliBeam recognizes oncoming vehicles and automatically switches the headlights to low beam and does the same when approaching a vehicle from the rear. Chevrolet is also the first truckmaker to offer LED fog lights, which are available on LT trim levels and above. The lights are designed to hit the road ahead without the light bouncing off the fog and into your eyes. And to make your life easier, there’s wireless charging for mobile devices, a remote power locking tail gate, and even power articulating assist steps on High Country models. Available at Weyburn’s Barber Motors, now is the time for a test drive. Get behind the wheel of the 2016 Silverado 1500 and you may never get out again.
