Educate Yourself During Autism Awareness Month By Susan Gellert

early a quarter century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and to assure that each person with Autism Spectrum Disorder was provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. For many years work has been done in large and small communities to ensure that available services and programming supported all individuals living with autism. This April, during Autism Awareness month, let’s expand this work to focus on the rest of us – ensuring acceptance and inclusion in schools and communities that results in true appreciation of the unique aspects of all people. Together we can get one step closer to a society where those with ASD are truly valued for their unique talents and gifts. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Studies have shown that there is no one cause of autism just as there is no one type of autism. made significant strides in understanding both what causes autism and what it looks like through the ASD. According to Autism Speaks, most cases of autism appear to be caused by a combination of autism risk genes and environmental factors influencing early brain development. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Early intervention has been proven to improve later outcomes for people with ASD. While every child develops differently and hits milestones at varying ages there are some distinct red flags to watch for which may indicate that your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. Do your research and learn what to watch for and collaborate with your doctor early if you have concerns. The biggest step is to educate yourself and the people around you. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more capable you’ll feel about helping your child and yourself. Learn to be the best advocate you can be for your child. Getting involved with autism advocacy is empowering and productive. Be open and honest about the disorder. In the end your experience with

autism may end up teaching you and your family profound life lessons you would not have otherwise learned. Each individual with autism is unique and many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills. About 40 percent have average to above average intellectual abilities. Take time to celebrate the victories your child achieves. Love your child unconditionally and take great pride in each small accomplishment. Autism is different for each person, there is no one size fits all, and what you think it will look like or be like is often not what reality is. Remember that you are not alone! Living with autism is challenging, but if you look closely nearly everyone has something difficult to face in their families and the key to facing challenges is to receive non-judgemental support and encouragement. A person on the Autism Spectrum Disorder has a life story that isn’t better or worse than anyone else’s, it’s just different and different is ok. Horses Can’t Talk But They Can Speak if you Listen

ometimes hearing the same information over and over has no impact but when you apply it and learn in an interactive ‘out of the box way’, the knowledge becomes ingrained and has incredible value. Rising Hoofs Adventure has a unique way to create learning environments that have had amazing results throughout North America. There probably haven’t been a whole lot of classroom settings in the area that have had a horse as a teacher, but why not. “We are a program that lets the horse do the teaching. Our facilitators are trained specifically to look for openings during the weekly sessions to assist participants in reading the horse and their partner,” explains owner and facilitator Gina Bowler. The teachers at Rising Hoofs Adventure are 1200–1500 pounds each and simply can’t be pushed around. Working alongside their teachers on the ground, participants have to step up and become

the leader. If a horse doesn’t have a leader they become a leader. This simply means their senses are highly astute. The Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games The Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games Committee as well as the various subcommittees, are hard at work to ensure the 2016 Games are a memorable event for athletes, spectators and the communities of southeastern Saskatchewan. No subcommittee is more excited than the committee designated to round up between 1,500 to 2,000 volunteers to make the event a success.

t’s a big job,” laughs the chair of the Volunteer Committee, Shelia Guenther. “When we first got involved with the Games, our liaison from the Games Council told us to ‘think huge, not big’ so that is what we have been doing. It is a huge event and one that I know Estevan and our surrounding communities can pull off. “

She has travelled across the globe to numerous high caliber events, including in 2015 International Paralympic Championships in Glasgow, Scotland and the Para-Pan Am Games in Toronto. Volunteer Vice-Chair Pam Dechief explains, “There are lots of perks to being a volunteer. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt, a souvenir lanyard, which grants them access to all the week’s sporting events and a souvenir gift. Volunteers also receive an invitation to the celebrations at the Volunteer Orientation event and the Volunteer Appreciation Night after the Closing Ceremonies. On top of all that, the volunteers get the satisfaction of participating in a wonderful community event. or over 108 years, the Weyburn Agricultural Society has been an integral part of the lives of residents in the Weyburn area. Over the decades the Ag Society has also purchased and built facilities that are used by the entire community for programs and events including the Weyburn Fair, the Souris River Rodeo, Farrier Contest and the Weyburn Dinner Theatre.

It’s been the aspiration of the Weyburn Agricultural Society to pass on their passion for community service to future generations. This was a particular dream of past-president Chad Johnstone. During his time serving with the Ag Society, Johnstone was dedicated to bringing new awareness of the club and new attractions to the forefront. Johnstone was passionate about bringing new people with creative new ideas

into the Ag Society to make it a strong organization that serves the community to the best of its ability. Since his untimely passing, the members of the organization have been working steadily to carry on this dream. As Chairperson of the 4-H Regional Show and Sale, Bev Gordon has enjoyed serving with the Ag Society and states that she has learned a lot. According to Gordon, organizations like the Ag Society

help build the community. “A strong community is better for everyone who lives here,” she says, “As a volunteer, you can feel good about being part of something positive.” EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO VOLUNTEER AND IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOUR SKILL SET IS.

City of Weyburn Representative Laura Morrissette agrees whole-heartedly with Gordon and adds that volunteering is a great opportunity to bring rural and urban residents together in a partnership to build the community. “I love working with the Ag Society. Everyone is welcome to volunteer and it doesn’t matter what your skill set is.” Tyler Metheral, president of the Weyburn Agricultural Society expands on Morrissette’s statement saying that all ages and abilities are welcome. “Professionals, artists, contractors, animal lovers, people who are just looking for a new experience—we want everyone. As president of the Weyburn Agricultural Society, Chad Johnstone was dedicated to rejuvenating the club and bringing into the awareness of the community once again. He motivated the Ag Society to embark on new ventures such as the Flavours of Fall Beer and Food Festival and participating in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle and Adopt-A-Family for Christmas campaigns. It was Johnstone’s vision for the Ag Society to grow and flourish and serve the community in a variety of new ways.

As a third generation member of the Weyburn Agricultural Society, Tyler Metheral has many fond childhood memories of being involved with the organization. He motivates young people to become a part of the Ag Society and notes that they are very happy to assist students who are looking to fulfill their community service hours for their school programming. Metheral is passionate about the Ag Society’s service to the community and looks to carry on the legacy left by Johnstone.

Perfectly portable and quite adorable, jarred salads are easy, make ahead lunches for both picnics and workdays. Here’s how to pack them just right for a delicious, satisfying meal every time. • Start with a clean mason jar. • You want to layer your ingredients. • Start with the dressing and other wet items, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, on the bottom. • Next, add moisture-resistant veggies, like carrots for example, on top of that. • Last of all, top with the protein of your choice and any “dry ingredients” such as greens, pasta and any crunchies. • Store in the fridge until you’re ready to eat. Healthy Ingredient Dog Biscuits

YOU AND YOUR DOG WILL LOVE THIS EASY TO MAKE DOG BISCUIT RECIPE. If you’ve ever read the ingredient labels on commercially made dog treats or biscuits, you’ve likely noticed a host of ingredients that are unrecognizable and by-products that aren’t so healthy. It’s also important to know where your pet’s food is manufactured. Since we consider our pets to be family members, it’s a must to know exactly what goes into the food they consume and where it’s produced. Our three ingredient motto for pet recipes: Healthy. Tasty. Simple.

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups old-fashioned oats (optional, whole wheat flour)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

1 ripe banana, mashed

Add oats to a blender or food processor and pulse until it is a flour like consistency, set aside. Combine mashed banana, peanut butter, and coconut oil in a medium bowl. Stir in flour and knead until moistened.

/ cup natural peanut butter (without salt) 14

1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted (unrefined extra-virgin is best)

Turn dough onto a surface lightly dusted with flour. Use your hands and shape dough into a 1/4” thick circle. Use small to medium doggie cutter, cut out treats and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet or non-stick cookie sheet. Bake until golden, approximately 25–30 minutes. Makes approximately 30 (1”) treats or 15 (2”) treats.

Vaccines are an effective tool that can be used to prevent serious, sometimes life threatening, diseases such as Parvo virus and Rabies.”

Spaying/Neutering Having your pets “fixed” (spayed or neutered) is an easy way to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but can also have many benefits to your pet’s overall health. Spaying and neutering can deter pets from wandering or having aggressive tendencies, and it can also help prevent Infections and cancers of the reproductive tract.

Grooming Who doesn’t like a pedicure? Pets have grooming needs like nail trims and hair cuts that not only make them cute but make them feel comfortable as well. Unattended or matted hair can pull on the skin making everyday activities uncomfortable and overgrown toe nails can affect how a pet holds their feet and can even contribute to arthritis as they age.

eyburn Humane Society has a mission to provide shelter and care for stray or homeless pets in Weyburn, until they can be reunited with their owners or adopted to a new home.

The Humane Society encourages responsible pet ownership. They work closely with Prairie Animal Health Centre to promote spaying and neutering in an effort to decrease the unexpected and unwanted animals throughout the region. They provide shelter and care to animals who are abandoned, lost, or cannot be cared for by their current families with the goal of finding them forever homes as quickly as possible. “It’s so rewarding to see them go to a great home,” says Colleen Morrice, manager of Weyburn Humane Society. The organization runs primarily on donations (they are a registered charity so you get a tax receipt on a donation over $20) and they run fundraising programs to raise funds for the ongoing needs of the animals in their care.

hen Tenille Arts was growing up in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, she would sing everywhere. She was singing a Shania Twain song in her backyard one afternoon when her neighbour overheard her singing, and encouraged her to enrol in vocal lessons. At age 11 she had her first public performance, and immediately after she was booked for her first paid gig. At the age of 14 she picked up the guitar. Shortly after learning the guitar she started song-writing and performing everywhere she could and now the entire world is listening. Last year Tenille released her first single “Breathe” as a charity fundraiser with 100 per cent of all proceeds going to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. “Music is so important to me because it connects people in ways that nothing else can and often says the words that people find hard to express. I’ve always said that my first song release would be something that I am so proud of but I would have never thought it would be something so powerful and have the ability to change lives.” “Breathe” was co-written by Matt Scales and Barnaby Pinny about what it’s like living with Cystic Fibrosis. Matt had Cystic Fibrosis and unfortunately lost his battle with it in 2007 at the young age of 27. The Cystic Fibrosis community came to Tenille with the idea to re-release the song and Matt’s dad graciously granted them permission to share Matt’s music with the world again. “I got involved because of Teresa Weger and her parents. Mike and Cara Weger have impacted my life with their courage and determination to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. This all started five years ago when I met Teresa. I was an assistant dance teacher for her class when I was approached by Mike and Cara to attend and perform at one of their fundraisers. They told me that Teresa had Cystic Fibrosis and I couldn’t believe that this beautiful little girl could have a disease that can be so devastating,” explains Tenille. Moving forward Tenille continues to perform at many events and fundraisers for Cystic Fibrosis in Saskatchewan and throughout Canada. “If you don’t know much about Cystic Fibrosis, I’ll give you a few of the facts. Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting young adults and children in Canada. It mainly affects the digestive system and the lungs. There is no cure. With your help we can change that. Every single download of “Breathe” on iTunes and Google Play will help fund valuable research and care for all those living with Cystic Fibrosis.” “Breathe} was trending on iTunes and reached number six on the Country iTunes Chart and number 54 on the Overall Genres iTunes Chart. The release of this charity single and the generous donation of the proceeds have got her mentioned in the CCMA Newsletter under Country Cares. The 2015 SCMA Rising Star Award nominee (and now 2016 SCMA Emerging Artist and Female Vocalist of the Year nominee) represented Saskatchewan in the CCMA Spotlight Performance Contest, she was a Top 16 finalist in the 2015 CCMA Discovery Program, performed in the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, performed on the Craven Country Jamboree Main Stage and is scheduled to play the Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival on April 9, 2016. Spring Attention Leads to Summer B eauty

ith spring just around the corner, gardener’s everywhere will start to watch the ground for signs of burgeoning bulbs and new life. As with any spring cleaning, a flower garden needs some attention in the early part of the season in order to achieve its full potential.

As soon as the ground can be worked and the frost is out, clear off your perennials and shrubs. Move or divide perennials once the ground is workable and some new growth has appeared. Remember final growth size when determining where to move plants. What looks small and compact in the spring may grow to huge proportions by the end of the season.

Check if shrubs have survived winter by scratching away the bark in a small area. If the stem is green then the shrub will grow again this year. Remember we are in a zone 2 b so zone 4 perennials may not survive our winters even in a protected site. If you aren’t sure what plants grow best contact your local greenhouse or landscape designer for ideas on hardy

Saskatchewan plants. Prune your shrubs for shape before new growth appears but trim off any dead pieces after new growth is established. Remember to put necessary plant supports in place before plants or shrubs get too big and to apply granular fertilizers to enrich the soil. If you are purchasing new shrubs and perennials to fill empty spots look for plants that have compact healthy growth. Avoid tall and spindly plants or ones that are in early bloom. Plant any new hardened off shrubs and perennials in late April or early May and mulch them well to prevent moisture loss and to keep the weeds down.

Once you have beds cleaned and see where you need filler, shop for accenting annuals that will contrast in colour, shape and height with your established plants. Add garden accents like old gates and buckets or solar lights and modern wind spinners. Fix up edging and trims so that your bed looks good from the outside as well. If your edging needs more than a quick fix maybe a complete make over is in order. New techniques in concrete edging or paving stonescan add lasting impact and elegance to your flower gardens. As the spring season moves into summer take notes of what works and what you want to add or subtract or move around for next season. Take photos to remind yourself of your plans when spring rolls around again. As with any project proper planning, improvements, nurturing, time and advice from professionals will ensure that you have a spectacular flower garden that you will continue to enjoy for many seasons.

A Roadmap for renovations or new builds

hether building new or renovating an existing structure, creating a new home is a journey of discovering who you are and what is really important to you. It’s an opportunity for you to define yourself and to create a reflection of what matters to you. As with any large undertaking the most important time spent is in the planning. You need to have a vision of what you want the end result to be and what it will cost to get you there both in time and money. Taking time for these few steps will make your project more organized and should invariably lead to better results. 1. Set goals. Starting a new build or an extensive renovation can be daunting. Decide what you want, what you need, what you must have and what you can do

without. Writing down your goals helps to solidify your plan. 2. Establish a budget. When making your budget, of course you’ll begin with what you can afford, and how the cost of your build fits in with your overall life plans. THE BARBER HOME AND BUSINESS Like Hulbert, local resident and business owner Andy Barber has grown up in the Weyburn area. When it came time to update the family home, the Barber’s had to decide whether to build a new dwelling or renovate their existing home. “We really liked our location and didn’t want the headache of uprooting so we decided to renovate,” recalls Barber. The renovation was going to be a complete overhaul of the entire house. This was going to be a big one and the Barber’s knew it. Because of the transformation that was to take place the family knew they needed someone they could trust.

The Barber’s also wanted to work with a contractor that would give them the freedom to pick and choose their subcontractors and materials. “Hiring and buying locally is very important to us and we knew that John Hulbert Construction would work with us in that respect,” states Barber. The entire renovation required the upstairs being completely redone which included all of the bedrooms, the kitchen and an additional 16 feet built onto the back of the home. This created a large open living room and kitchen area that is ideal for entertaining or spending quiet family evenings. “Over the course of the renovation we had two or three modified sets of drawings and they (JHC) were completely open to the changes. John’s wife Tanya was very helpful in the design process and was able to modify the plans as needed and explained everything that had to be done,” states Barber. He also points out that, if there were changes needed to be taken care of, Hulbert himself was right there looking after it. JHC is unique in that they offer in-house drafting and design services to their clients.

John Hulbert Construction also worked for Barber on a commercial level as they worked on the new front entrance and installed the new exterior for the Barber Motors building. Barber notes that General Motors had specific guidelines to follow, Hulbert worked well with the company’s engineers. . PROUD CRAFTSMANSHIP For Hulbert, it’s important to have pride in what you do. Building quality structures that are soundly constructed is a true sense of accomplishment. “In my occupation, it’s nice to drive around and point out the projects we’ve done and know that they are built to last. There’s a lot of pride in that,” he comments.

hile some first-time homebuyers may think the first step to home buying is house shopping itself, it’s better to take some preparatory steps before you get deep into the house hunt. Here are some tips to help you be ready to “seize the moment” when you spot the perfect house:

TIP #1: SAVE THAT DOWN PAYMENT: The first step in the home-buying process should be to ramp up savings. Remember, the more of a down payment you have, the less you’ll have to borrow. And, if you have at least a 20% down payment, you won’t have to pay mortgage default insurance premiums*. n agreement for the sale and purchase of real estate is binding on the parties only if it is in writing. Oral agreements and handshake deals are not binding. Therefore a real estate transaction begins with a well written agreement signed by both the buyer and the seller. It is a good idea to have witnesses, but not necessary. At a minimum the written agreement needs to state what I call the four P’s: PROPERTY The legal description of the property. PARTIES The names and addresses of the buyer and the seller. PRICE The dollar amount that will be paid by the buyer to the seller for the property. POSSESSION DATE The date the buyer will take ownership and the seller will be paid. The agreement should include a condition that clear title to the property will be delivered by the seller. This means a title without any encumbrances registered on the title, except such as the parties may agree eg. utility easements that will not affect the marketability or value of the property. It is a good idea for the buyer to search titles to the property before signing the agreement.

The seller may wish to have a deposit as a sign of good faith that the buyer will complete the transaction. If so, the agreement should specify the amount of the deposit and who will hold it. Usually the deposit is paid to the seller’s lawyer to be held and applied to the purchase price on the closing of the transaction. If the buyer backs out then the deposit is forfeited to the sellers. If the buyer needs to arrange for mortgage financing the buyer needs to insert a condition stating that the transaction is conditional upon the buyer being able to arrange satisfactory financing by a specific date. The buyer should first check with the lending financial institution as to how much time it will take to approve the mortgage. If the buyer is unable to arrange for financing approval by the specified date then the deposit will be returned to the buyer. Both buyer and seller need to recognize that if the buyer is relying on mortgage financing, the funds from the financial institution may not actually be available until a few days after the possession date. Financial institutions will not generally advance the mortgage funds until the mortgage has been registered on title. If there is a delay in registration at the land titles office the seller may not receive full payment of the price until after the seller has given possession to the buyer. An agreement drafted by a lawyer or a realtor will generally contain a paragraph that entitles

Finally, a note on the role of lawyers in real estate transactions. Buying or selling real estate is typically a transaction with big money at stake for both buyers and sellers. The job of the buyer’s lawyer is to make sure that the buyer gets a good and marketable title, i.e. a title with no encumbrances registered on the title that could undermine the value or marketability of the property. It is the job of the seller’s lawyer to make sure that title to the property will not transfer to the buyer unless the buyer is going to be paid the full price. Only lawyers are able to impose trust conditions on other lawyers and only lawyers are able to give undertakings. It is through the use of trust conditions and undertakings that both the buyer and the seller can be confident in a happy outcome to their real estate transaction.

Buyers need to remember that the interest clock on the mortgage loan will not start ticking until the financial institution advances the funds to their lawyer. This means that, rather than paying interest to the financial institution for the waiting period the buyer ends up paying the seller late payment interest as compensation for the wait.

the Experts! Ask Q&A with the Agricultural Lenders of Weyburn Credit Union Q. What advice do you have for a farmer just starting out? For those just starting up a farming operation, they need to realistically plan their expenses for the first year; knowing how much is due and when. They should be conservative when projecting yields because those yields can be affected by so many things beyond a farmer’s control. Capital is essential - either through self-funding or a sufficient operating line of credit. Educating yourself in the marketing and sale of your grain will give you the edge with competition and allow you to hedge your sales into the future. Q. Is it best to Lease or Purchase? This is a hard question to answer as there are so many tax implications in choosing whether to purchase or lease. We recommend that you speak to a tax specialist to determine what is best for your operation. Another area to consider is cash-flow. With a lease, your down payment is only your first advance payment. With a purchase, your down payment is 25%, if not financed under a government program. Q. Do you offer any government sponsored programs? WCU offers a government sponsored program called CALA (Canadian Agricultural Loans Act Program). With this program, we can finance up to $500,000 in land purchases. What makes CALA so attractive is that the minimum down payment for beginning farmers is only 10% and 20% for seasoned farmers. With a government guarantee on a loan, we can often offer loans at preferred rates! Q. To Fix or to Float - what is the answer? This depends on the risk appetite of the borrower. With a fixed rate loan, your rate and payment are secured for the duration of your term. At the onset of a loan, often a variable rate is lower than a fixed rate, however the rate and payment will fluctuate with prime rate and can be affected by economic conditions - making it riskier.

Q. Can you explain “security” on a loan? When you borrow funds, we take a priority interest in that land, equipment, inventory, livestock or other asset to secure your loan. We do this by registering our interest in your asset either through one of two provincial agencies depending on the type of security. Q. What type of security does WCU require? They type of security that we take on a loan is very dependent on a number of factors, including; the length of your loan, the principle amount borrowed, borrower’s strength, and purpose of your loan. Weyburn Beavers

he 2015 season was one for the record books, literally! The Weyburn Beavers captured multiple franchise records starting with the highest attendance (over 600 fans) and 50/50 (over $900). The team also won a record setting 31 games which lead to the Beavers first East Division Title and brought them within one win of reaching the WMBL championship series. Head Coach Phil Curtis was named WMBL Coach of the Year and Weyburn Beavers President Garnet Hansen was presented the 2015 WMBL Executive of the Year award. Off the field, the team could be found at various venues around town such as schools, minor ball games and practices logging over 500 hours of volunteer hours throughout the summer. For 2016, volunteer work within the community remains a pillar of the Beaver’s organizational goals. Players visit schools within Weyburn and surrounding communities to interact with the students. They also pair one player with every junior Mickey Mouse Ball team to participate in all their practices and games to help kids build their skills in all aspects of baseball. To add to the growth of local players, the Beavers also offer youth camps throughout the summer, where kids can come to Tom Laing Park and learn catching, throwing, hitting and more from the coaches and players.

New for 2016 is a community program designed to pair businesses with non-profit organizations through a ticket sharing program. Businesses can purchase tickets and share them with people in their partner organization who will use them to attend the games. This program will help to grow the number of fans in the stands as well as encourage people to attend games that they might not have been able to in the past. Also new is a tourism package designed for fans and families of both the Beavers and visiting teams. Working with Tourism Weyburn, the Weyburn Beavers are developing packages for out of town visitors that include game tickets, hotel and food discounts and incentives to utilize other community services such as the golf course or swimming pool. The Weyburn Beavers also offer the opportunity to have your minor ball team’s windup at a game. The kids are able to go on field for the National Anthem and then attend the game in a special section, with shout outs given throughout the game. There are also birthday party packages, where the birthday kid is able to go on field and receive a gift from the Beavers and the whole party will have special seating. Food packages are available for both events
