Publisher’s Message
I
’ve always loved Christmas but since having our daughters it’s given me a renewed feeling of excitement; it feels magical again. During the holidays we listening to copious amounts of Christmas music and drink a concerning amount of hot chocolate covered with marshmallows. Once the snow comes, we make a well-dressed snowman that our dog hasn’t quite figured out. He steals the carrot nose while trying to knock it over. We love decorating our tree with the mostly homemade decorations we create each year. We always make time to bake gingerbread cookies and at night we cuddle, read Christmas stories and watch Christmas movies. This is our first issue featuring the Refined Shop Local Holiday Gift Guide. Check out these pages to see what your local businesses have to offer this Christmas. Supporting local businesses helps our community more than we realize. The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce has a wonderful explanation of how those dollars benefit our community on page 72.

• Get hooked. This one might not be as energetic as sledding or skiing, but it’ll still get you outside and off the couch. Ice fishing is another great winter pastime, and you can find plenty of spots to drop a line around the southeast. • Splish splash! If you don’t feel like a day outside but you want to move that body, the Weyburn Leisure Centre has an indoor pool, traditional sauna and hot tub, tot pool, waterslide and climbing wall to keep you busy and working those muscles.
Whatever you choose to do, here are some tips to make winter exercise enjoyable

t’s easy to get a little lazy in the winter. The weather is cold, it’s cozy inside and there is usually plenty of delicious treats to enjoy (shortbread and hot chocolate anyone?). However, we really should keep moving even during the winter months to get out of the house and get some exercise. Need some ideas on what to do this winter? We’ve got plenty of things for you to do in Weyburn and area this frosty season.
Five things to try this winter • Get the sled out. River Park off Confederation Drive is the place to spend an afternoon with a toboggan

and the kids. You’d be surprised at the number of calories you’ll burn as you haul the sled back up the hill while the kids shout, “let’s do it again!” • Slide the day away. Check out the groomed ski trails throughout Jubilee Park and River Park. The route is changed regularly, and you can rent snowshoes and skis from the Weyburn Leisure Centre. • Vroom vroom vroom! Snowmobiling is a load of fun all winter long. Weyburn is in Zone 3 of the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association’s trail system. Check out sasksnow.com for details. You’ll find great trails just outside the City of Weyburn.

• Try new things and things you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to experiment with activities you haven’t done before, and also mix in the things you know you like. • Stay warm. If you’re outdoors, dress for the weather. Saskatchewan winters need layers. Avoid cotton, and make sure your outer layer is wind and water resistant. • Stay hydrated. Just like in the summer, you need to drink water when you’re engaged in physical activity. • Set achievable goals. If getting fit or losing weight is your goal, be realistic about what you want to accomplish. Start with small goals and work your way up. • Stay safe. Have the right footwear and equipment for the winter. Winter means snow and ice, and that can mean slips, falls and other injuries. Nothing ruins the fun faster than a broken bone or sprain. Be careful out there!

DOC WALKER ACOUSTIC SHOW
W
eyburn Concert Series is over the moon to finally be back with live performances in our community! It has been way too long, and we have such a fabulous season to share with you!
CMT videos and millions of streams along with 12 CCMA Awards (42 nominations), and a Juno (7 nominations total). The band has performed across Canada and three tours to Australia. They have shared stages with everyone from Bon Jovi to Eric Church.
Getting back on tour is something Doc Walker has been eagerly waiting for since the world shut down in early 2020. Like all performers, the guys have found it challenging to not be doing ‘live’ concerts. Dave shares, “there is a heightened appreciation for it because it was taken away as abruptly as if someone had turned off a tap. If there is any silver lining, it’s that it’s served as a reminder of just how much we love making and playing music.”
This year Doc Walker is further celebrating the 20th anniversary of 2001’s ‘Curve’, its breakthrough album that spawned the signature hits “She Hasn’t Always Been This Way” and “Rocket Girl.” In summing up that milestone, and what’s in store for Doc Walker’s immediate future, Chris says “the plan has always been to create music that we are proud of and to spend as much time as we can out on the road playing for the fans.”
Since forming in the town of Westbourne, Man. in the early 1990s, Doc Walker has earned 21 Top 10 Canadian country radio singles, eight #1
Additional news is that Doc Walker’s new single “She Wants What She Wants” is to be released just ahead of their upcoming cross country tour announcement.

CHANTAL KREVIAZUK - GET TO YOU
C
hantal Kreviazuk—one of Canada’s, most accomplished songwriters and recognizable voices—is a platinum-selling, three-time Juno Award winning artist from Winnipeg. She recently released her eighth studio album “Get to You.” The message it relays throughout is positive, about self-love, acceptance, and perseverance. “It’s also the album I created the most independently without outside influence. It’s my essence of recording at the moment,” says Chantal. The choice to proceed with the release of an album during a global pandemic was an easy one for Chantal. “The wonderful thing about music is that it is always welcomed and needed,” she says. “In times of crisis, it offers solace and comfort. Without question, now is the time to release music.”
Chantal released her first ever Christmas album, a 10-track “Christmas Is A Way Of Life, My Dear,” in November 2019. It features the title track as well as a jubilant cover of the classic “Walking In A Winter Wonderland.” The album features five new original songs, plus Chantal’s spin on classics such as “Silent Night,” “Blue Christmas” (a duet with husband Raine Maida), and “Wonderful Christmas Time” (featuring the debut of son Sal Maida). “The world could use the Christmas spirit all year long,” says Chantal. “The kindness, gentleness and thoughtfulness that goes with the season is so healthy. The world could benefit from living by the values that radiate during Christmas.”

NEARLY NEIL AND THE SOLITARY BAND
B
obby Bruce is an awardwinning, internationally celebrated Canadian vocalist, whose Solitary Band concerts focus on Neil Diamond’s musical rise to fame. Known on stage as Nearly Neil, international shutdowns curtailed Bruce’s globetrotting tours last spring. There is, however, a glimmer of hope on the horizon for the British Columbia based singer. “Things started looking up at the end of this summer. The Band and I opened the PNE, did a few waterfront concerts; it was reviving to play for people again,” explains Bruce. The Band’s tour to Saskatchewan in January 2022 will be their first return to indoor concerts in almost two years. During the pandemic, Bruce retreated to his home on Gambier Island, in the Howe Sound. “Given my previous touring schedule, I had only ever spent 19 days
12 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
in a row sleeping in my own bed. COVID changed that,” Bobby reveals. Bobby and his wife adapted to pandemic life by providing a grocery delivery service to their remote community on Gambier Island. They ended up earning Citizen of the Year awards through the success of their endeavours. In addition, they renovated their granny flat into a video studio, and started broadcasting online performances from home. Even with all of that, the internationally acclaimed tribute artist is thrilled to be returning to the stage. “It’s not the same performing to a camera. As a front man, you are utilizing the band’s enthusiasm behind you, pushing your energy to the audience, who, in turn, gives it back to you. You can’t feel that in a room by yourself against a green screen. So, we are eager to bring live music safely back to the stage,” declares Bruce.

THE BROMANTICS
F
ormed in the summer of 2013, The Bromantics are a Saskatchewan based sixpiece group who perform a sensational tribute to the music of the 50s. It is certainly worth noting that they also perform original music following similar chord progressions, while working within the parameters of the genre. In making use of warm brass instruments, in combination with vintage guitar tones accompanied by doo-wop style harmonies, The Bromantics are bringing that era back to life, further enhancing it with a youthful energy. They have recorded live sessions through Blue Door Studios and in collaboration with Nyshe Media based out of Vancouver. From that they have released several videos that encompass precisely how they look and sound. They are currently in the process of writing a debut EP to be released this year. The Bromantics have been performing
consistently since they formed and are only gaining more notice. They were invited to the OSAC 2019 Showcase, being received by the audience with the same sensational energy the band emits on stage. This led to 30-plus tour dates and countless new friendships and networks. Post Showcase, The Bromantics are focusing on their larger scale ‘Sock-Hop’ events. There the audience is taught two hours of Swing and Jive steps prior, and encouraged to dress in full costume to create a truly authentic experience. The contagious genre of music, combined with their high-energy stage performances, have proven successful in creating a nostalgic atmosphere that also promises to have everyone ‘twisting’ the night away!

Plants for Your Own Indoor Garden By Brook Thalgott
Gardening doesn’t have to end when the frost arrives. You can garden all year-round, and there’s no time like the present to start a garden indoors. Even the blackest thumb can find a way to succeed with an indoor plant or two to bring some nature indoors. Getting started is easy and take it from me— indoor gardening is fun, satisfying and maybe even a little addictive.

Here are a few plants to get you started on your indoor gardening journey.
Pothos This trailing vine can handle whatever a black thumb can throw at it, including poor light. Set it up in bright, indirect light and let the soil dry out between waterings. Pop it on a shelf or in a plant hanger and fertilize it every few months to keep it happy.
GARDENING
Christmas Cactus It was the gift of a Christmas cactus that got me started with indoor gardening. You can often find them in the fall and winter in the supermarket, and they bloom beautifully in shades of pink, purple, red, and white. It likes water, so keep its soil lightly moist. It’s also easy to propagate too.
Spider Plant Another easy one perfect for the plant hanger, it spawns baby spider plants easily that you can pot up too for yourself or share with a friend. It likes the light. Be sure to water weekly.
Benefits of Indoor Gardening A study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that plants in your home can reduce stress, both physically and psychologically. Researchers from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the United Kingdom also found that horticultural therapy increased feelings of well-being for people with depression, dementia, and anxiety. Who knew something as simple as some greenery and dirt digging could do so much?
Aloe I love aloe with its spiky, tropical good looks. Like the pothos it prefers indirect light. It’s a great companion in the kitchen, on a desk or in a bedroom. It’s a succulent, so be sure to plant in a succulent potting mix— not regular potting soil.
Snake Plant
Jade A personal favourite of mine, my mom had one when I was growing up that grew into a mini-tree. It also attracted our Manx cat Mitzi, who liked nothing better than sitting in it. Place a jade plant in a sunny window (south or west facing is best) and water when it feels dry.
GARDENING
This one is ready for its closeup on Instagram. Its spiky, stiff leaves add style to your décor, and this one is tough to kill. It likes indirect, bright light and it can dry out completely between waterings. Whatever you choose to start with, be sure to give it the care it needs to thrive. Plants can jazz up a window, add a touch of nature in the bedroom, brighten up a kitchen counter, breathe new life into an office—and deliver good green feelings at the same time. Happy planting!

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS
I never knew how much going to see Harmony would change my life! I’ve hated my eyebrows for a very long time as they wouldn’t grow back after the over plucking I did as a teenager for years. Not only is Harmony amazing at her craft but she is also the most amazing, down to earth, kind hearted person you’ll ever meet! I did not feel any pain throughout my procedure and have been able to cut my “get ready” time in half and most days now feel comfortable going out not wearing any makeup at all!
Harmony is truly an amazing, kind and most important the best permanent makeup artist out there! She was very knowledgeable and made sure I was comfortable and knew what I was getting myself into! My lips turned out great! Highly recommend!
Harmony was a true professional! She made me so comfortable and the process was seamless. Best part is, I was so happy & blown away by the transformation. - Kali Holdstock

s Steve and Armanda Schuck look back on 2021, it’s been an incredibly exciting year. After practicing law for many years in his hometown, Steve acquired Horner Law Office, successor to Don Horner. Announcing the business as Schuck Law Firm, Steve reflected on the day the new firm signs went up. “There is nothing more exciting than starting your own business,” he says. After recently welcoming their first child, it’s been a big year. “Our lives are filled with major milestones,” says Steve. “So many of those milestones can require legal assistance and we are here to help you at Schuck Law Firm.”

Born and raised in Weyburn, Steve Schuck has a family background rooted deep in law. Steve’s father Tom practiced law in Weyburn for over 40 years. Steve attended the University of Saskatchewan, studying finance before earning his J.D. from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 2014. After finishing his law degree, Steve returned to his hometown to practice law. He and wife Armanda have happily made their home in Weyburn.

The team at Schuck Law Firm includes highly trained legal assistants that can spot issues with your deal before they become a problem. For example, if you’re financing your deal, Schuck Law Firm staff can assist by setting out the balance of cash you need to close your deal, usually long before the possession date. This helps you plan for the purchase, making things less stressful while you’re getting ready to move.
REAL ESTATE For many of us, the biggest purchase of our lives is a home. For others, it might be that half-section of land you had your eye on this summer. Whether it’s your home or farm, making sure the process goes smoothly for buyers and sellers is one of the many services Schuck Law Firm provides.
Schuck Law Firm can also help when buyers purchase a new home before the sale or possession date of their current home. “This adds complexity to the transaction because even if Gretel McNab the two sales are just a few days apart, you may need a bridge loan (a temporary loan that is repaid from the sale proceeds of your old house) to guarantee cash is available on the possession date,” says Steve. “Our team helps guide our clients through this process. Allowing them to focus on all the other matters that arise during a big move so we can get them into their new home on time.”

“We have introduced specialized software to provide Weyburn and surrounding areas with fast and knowledgeable service.” - Steve Schuck If you’re buying farmland, you want to ensure that you’re receiving clear title. There can be water works, wetlands, judgments, encroachments, or other easements that can affect the value of your property. “Let us handle your deal, big or small, to ensure that you’re getting exactly what you bargained for,” says Steve. WILLS AND ESTATES It’s always best to plan ahead and Schuck Law Firm can help with planning for the future. “Getting married or the birth of a child is often the first time that people consider writing a will,” says Steve. “I advise my clients that they should read over their will after every major life change or at least every five years. A will is important for anyone to have but needs to be reviewed and updated periodically.” Among Schuck Law Firm’s most frequent calls are those where clients ask how to make new or updated wills, set up a power of attorney, and arrange health care directives. “The team makes it a top priority to efficiently complete and update these documents,” says Steve. “We have introduced specialized software to provide Weyburn and surrounding areas with fast and knowledgeable service.”

After proper planning with a lawyer, you may find yourself acting as an executor for a deceased loved one. “We will guide you through this process. We can contact the financial institutions, search the land titles registry and make the court application for probate. We provide executors the comprehensive advice they will need to resolve the estate properly,” says Steve.
From planning to execution, the last piece that is important is safely storing documents. No matter when or where you wrote it, it is important these documents are safe, secure and located quickly. “We offer free, secure will storage for everyone,” says Steve. “Safely storing your will in a place that is easily accessible for your loved ones is one way you can make the estate process easier from the very start.” CORPORATE Weyburn is a continuously growing entrepreneurial community. Even if your estate is uncomplicated or you don’t own very much, having a properly drafted will gives you peace of mind and prevents needless confusion. This is important for many reasons. For example, in the event a person passes without a will, the assigned administrator could be someone that you didn’t intend to have the job. “The bottom line is if you don’t have a will, you will lose some control about how your estate is dealt with,” says Steve. What’s more, if you have a young family, it’s critical that you appoint a guardian to ensure your children are cared for properly in the event of your passing. A power of attorney is another important document to prepare. This allows you to appoint a trusted person to make decisions and sign legal documents for you. There are many ways this document can be drafted to add a layer of security. Alternatively, if you or a loved one is moving into a long-term care home, having a properly drafted power of attorney is your way of ensuring that a trusted individual or individuals can manage your property on your behalf when you are no longer able to. Health care directives and proxies allow you to appoint a decision maker for medical decisions. If you’re unable to

SAVING FOR A RAINY DAY N.M. McMahon CPA is on Your Side
N
ancy McMahon, an accountant with more than 25 years of experience, loves the work she does to help people and businesses make the most of their money and plan for their future. Among the money-maximizing ideas in her toolbox, Nancy sees the value that registered retirement savings plans (RRSP) and tax-free savings accounts (TFSA) offer individuals for both savings and tax purposes. “Both offer great benefits,” says Nancy. “It’s important to know the difference, and how they can work for your financial goals.” RRSPs are an investment vehicle that defers taxes, reducing the taxes you pay now and at retirement, when your income should be lower than when you were working. Your contribution amount is based on your income from the prior year, known as the deduction limit. You can find this on your CRA Notice of Assessment, and you can carry over unused deduction room into subsequent tax years. Contributions for the 2021 tax year must be made by March 1, 2022. TFSAs are also an investment vehicle, but instead of deferring taxes, you benefit from tax-free growth within the account and don’t pay taxes when you withdraw. The TFSA contribution limit for 2020 and 2021 is $6,000.00, and TFSA contribution room grows every

year, even if you don’t currently have a TFSA. For example, if you opened your first TFSA in 2021, you would have total available contribution room of $75,500 if you were 18 or older in 2009. “Ideally, you should contribute to both,” says Nancy. “Talk to your accountant or financial planner to determine how you can use both to the best benefit possible.” Nancy and the team at N.M. McMahon CPA Professional Corporation provide fullservice accounting, including AgriStability and AgriInvest, tax planning and consulting, re-organizations, corporate and personal income tax preparation, family trusts, estate work, financial statement preparation, bookkeeping and payroll, and CRA assistance.

A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned RRSP vs. TFSA By Brook Thalgott
These days there are many, many options to save and invest your money for a rainy day. It can be difficult to know what all the choices mean and what they can do for your savings. Let’s have a look at the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and a more recent arrival on the scene – the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) and what they can offer you. RRSPs Created in 1957, one of the most common financial vehicles is what we all know as the RRSP. An RRSP is the way many of us contribute to our retirement savings. You can save funds within an RRSP until age 71, and you don’t pay any taxes on the money saved or earned within it until you take it out. Both you and your spouse or partner can contribute to the plan. Perhaps best of all, your yearly contributions are deductions from your taxable income, meaning you can pay less in income taxes. RRSPs are also more than just a savings plan for retirement. You can also borrow from your plan to fund post-secondary education (Lifelong Learning Plan) or a down payment (Home Buyers’ Plan) on a home as a first-time homebuyer. Plus, both of those options are tax
36 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
free as long as you pay back the funds within a certain period of time (10 years for education and 15 years for a home purchase). There are different types of RRSPs, and you can have more than one. There are individual RRSPs for a single contributor, spousal RRSPs that allows a spouse/ partner to contribute to an RRSP for their spouse, and a group RRSP which is offered by employers, which combines contributions from both the employer and the employee. There is a limit to the amount you can contribute annually, and any unused contribution room is carried forward. In 2021, the maximum contribution amount was the lower of: 18 per cent of your earned income reported on your 2020 tax return or $27,830. “Many people like to invest a lump sum amount into RRSPs at tax time to help with their tax bill. A much better strategy
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
is to pay into your RRSP with a preauthorized purchase plan throughout the year,” says Mike Onstad, assistant manager at Weyburn Security - PEAK Investments. “This way, you use dollar cost averaging which takes advantage of the ups and downs in the market throughout the year. You are not putting all your money in at one price point.”
TFSAs TFSAs are far newer in Canada, introduced for the first time in 2009. Available to anyone age 18 or over, TFSAs are designed to save money tax-free but unlike RRSPs, contributions are not taxdeductible. However, there are benefits to saving money in a TFSA. You don’t pay any tax on the money earned by investments made within a TFSA and on the money you withdraw. You can also contribute at any time and your spouse can contribute as well.
You can contribute to an RRSP and a TFSA and get the benefits of both financial plans. TFSA savings can be applied to many significant purchases, such as postsecondary education, down payments on real estate and retirement. TFSAs are also more than just a “savings account.” You can invest your TFSA savings into qualified investments such as Guaranteed Income Certificates (GICs), bonds, stocks, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Like RRSPs, there is a contribution limit. In 2020, the limit for contributions to a
TFSA was $6,000. TFSA contributions are also cumulative. TFSA unused contribution room is carried over every year. As of January 1, 2021, the total cumulative contribution room for a TFSA is $75,500 for those who have been 18 years or older and residents of Canada for all eligible years. “One of the great features of a TFSA is that it is very liquid, meaning that you have access to your money at anytime. There is no withholding tax or income
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
tax to be paid, unlike a withdrawal from an RRSP,” says Mike.
Which One Should I Pick? For most people, the answer is both. You can contribute to an RRSP and a TFSA and get the benefits of both financial plans. Talk to your financial planner to help you maximize the advantages and make the most of your savings.

MAXIMIZING YOUR MONEY

wo things you constantly hear about in the financial world are: should I be in a TFSA or an RRSP, and what are my fees?
When it comes to choosing a TFSA versus an RRSP, there’s no one specific answer. Your financial advisor should address your unique financial situation and decide which one is suitable. For example—are you saving for the retirement, or do you need an emergency fund? Do you have a large tax bill when you file your tax return? All these questions should be addressed with your advisor. This leads directly into the fee conversation.
and the financial planning that takes place between a client and their advisor. Low fees usually mean low service. Do you have someone you can call to discuss your finances with? Do you even know what you are invested in? Do you care about ethical investing? Are your funds being monitored if things are not going the way you projected them to be?
Today, we see commercials constantly saying that “lower fees = high return on investment.” All things being equal, of course this is true.
The way markets work has vastly changed over the years. You need to consider current and future interest rates and how they affect certain types of investments, such as fixed income. Saving 0.5 per cent on fees isn’t going to save you money if your investments are doing poorly and not aligned with your goals or up to date on market trends. As an advisor, it is our job to make sure your portfolio aligns with your goals and is constantly monitored and updated as your life progresses.
What they don’t talk about is the professional management of the funds

Ask yourself:
Reflecting on the Past and Thinking about the Future
I
always like to reflect on what the last year has looked like. The last 12 months have been some of the most difficult for everybody to navigate. We’ve endured homeschooling, quarantines, business shutdowns and new ways of dealing with customers, clients and the people that pay us. I want to take this opportunity to thank all my loyal clients. It’s been one heck of a year. When discussing how things have gone the last year, I often hear from parents the struggles having to take time off and use vacation pay or no pay at all. “Frustrated” seems to be their number one word. Everyone wants to be able to take care of their families but still have freedom and choice in their lives.
1.
Do I need a full-time business to replace my current career or a side hustle to help pay the bills?
2.
Is this something I could do every day for years? Do I enjoy this enough that I will stick with it?
3.
Is there a market for this? The economy is going through a huge shift right now. Do your homework. Make sure that it’s something that is needed.
4.
Do I have access to resources? With Covid shutdowns, it can be hard to get the things you need. Make sure you can source anything you require.
5.
What sort of startup costs are involved? Do you need licenses? Do you need training?
6.
Who will be involved?

It’s time to make a choice and take back your control. Nine years ago, I made that choice. I was frustrated trying to take care of everyone and everything. Trying to be a good mom, provider, student, friend…I was frustrated. I, like most of my fellow entrepreneurs, started my business out of desperation. I needed time and money. I needed time to take care of all the things a mom takes care of, and I needed money to pay our bills.
There has never been a better time to look after yourself and your family and create something that you love. Don’t put it off another day!

PRAIRIE ANIMAL HEALTH CENTRE: FALL IS HERE! By Dr. Gary Hoium
S
eventeen years ago, when I was running out of the energy required to provide competent clinic leadership and carry on the demanding commitment needed, Drs. Carol and Jeremy Ross—then-owners of PAHC in Estevan— purchased Hoium Veterinary Services P.C. Ltd. (H.V.S). Thankfully, they kept me as a veterinarian whose exclusive focus would be live cattle exports to the United States, and I continue this work today. With their wisdom, PAHC also transitioned the wonderful H.V.S staff to their new business. Offering comprehensive veterinary health services over a large service area takes a well-educated and competent team like the one PAHC has assembled. What’s Stayed the Same in 17 Years “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” still holds true as vaccines continue to demonstrate their impressive ability to mitigate and almost eliminate many serious diseases. The proper use of broad-spectrum antibiotics still serves a vital role in treating animal diseases, although drug resistance to several is posing a real threat. Jokingly, most cows still calve, and dogs still whelp during the night and on weekends. Most emergencies seem to happen after hours. All puppies benefit exponentially from puppy classes.

Your veterinarian remains your most credible and trustworthy source for information regarding animal health. The demands on veterinary manpower to fulfill the 24/7 requirements remains. What’s Changed in 17 Years The adoption of new technology and treatment by progressive clinics like PAHC means it now offers services such as high-definition digital x-ray capacity, diagnostic ultrasonography, animal acupuncture, comprehensive in-house blood, blood chemistry and urine analysis, and much more. The pet food revolution offers up an array of formulations with proven positive outcomes for pet nutrition and the results are amazing. The internet with its seemingly unlimited websites, apps, and platforms has flooded the world with useful information, but also misinformation that challenges the way veterinary medicine and advice (scientific or not) is delivered to our clientele. I would like to congratulate everyone at PAHC for meeting today’s diverse veterinary mixed animal challenges. Your veterinary clinic remains the expected first line of defence in helping to ensure companion animal enjoyment and livestock’s agricultural sustainability.

n 1965, Ernie Pokletar and his family moved to Weyburn and made the community their home. The same year, Ernie launched his entrepreneurial venture and became Ernie’s Signs. Back then, signage was hand painted or silkscreened—truly an art form that must be appreciated for its skill and originality. “Ernie was a one-man shop when he started out,” says Don Pokletar, Ernie’s son. “In the 1970s, he had one employee.” In 1984, Ernie’s Signs would become the Protouch Signs Ltd. and training to learn the art and craft of sign making. By the early 1990s, the way signs were made was changing and the company invested in their first vinyl sign cutter in 1992. Five years later, Don would buy Protouch Signs from his father, and moved the business to the location it calls home today. “We grew in the 1990s, and added three more employees and even more sign equipment,” says Don. Since then, the team has grown to six today with even more printers and cutters to serve Weyburn and the southeast.

Without the lamp
My clients often ask me why I am dragging around a light when it’s already light outside. The truth is light can be a photographer’s biggest enemy or their best friend. Learning to work with light was my most difficult lesson. Thankfully, my great mentors showed me the beauty of a catchlight (sparkle in the eye) and the depth of a photo, and the importance of making it happen. This is always my goal when I’m behind the camera capturing memories for others that will last a lifetime.

A Place You’ll Love to Come Home To By Kali Holdstock
Now that summer’s over, it’s natural to turn your attention inward. We’re ready for a season of cozy jumpers, hearty home-cooked meals and drinking wine by a fireplace. While the home certainly received its fair share of attention back in 2020 (thanks a lot, COVID-19), in 2021 we’re focusing on several design trends with longevity. 56 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

hether its paint shades that skew towards earthy neutrals and rustic earth tones or objects that have an artisanal, handmade quality— embracing the natural world is one of the key trends to consider this winter.
GET GROUNDED The push for warm colours continues this winter, with a palette made up of rusts, warm greens, charcoal, and browns on the menu. Another key look that pairs perfectly with the earth tones this season is
AT HOME
warm, natural textiles inspired by global influences.
WORK THAT HOME OFFICE Design your home office as a space to induce thought and help boost your inner creativity. Lean towards crisp, clear lines and comfort, and be sure to include artwork. By adding a desk lamp you’re putting your own small stamp and style inside your work area, as well as providing your much needed task lighting. When it comes to office chairs, comfort is crucial, but your choice should reflect the work you’ll be doing. A leather armchair for example would fit in a
library-type space, acting as a sanctuary to read and reflect, whereas an upright swivel chair suits written desk work.
EMBRACE IMPERFECTION Home objects have taken on a more handmade, one-of-a-kind feel of late. I am seeing a growing demand for artisanal goods, handmade craftsmanship and pieces made in smaller batches. Organic materials such as timber are being used to create furniture, and we embrace the imperfections and characteristics within these natural materials. There are so many local artists within our city for you to support this winter. Among the handcrafted creations that can be part of current interior design, we find basketry items (baskets, trays and other textiles), pottery (vases,
ornaments and crockery) and ceramics. Don’t forget macrame and hand-poured candles—they will never leave our home design either.
CURLY WOOL Although its wake was felt at the beginning of the year, it now heads the forefront of the decorative scene. Without a doubt, this material is currently essential in cozy and warm interiors, with a ‘cocooning’ soul. Soft to the touch, beyond blankets and cushions, it can also cover seats or a carpet.
MAKE IT YOURS While these looks are all growing in popularity, they also vary widely. These are the major interior design trends for 2021-2022 that I think are worth considering—pick the trends that are perfect for your home and style.

“My process from start to finish with Ideal Cabinets and Décor was great! They have a great selection of designs and colors, and the craftmanship is great! There were some custom additions that I requested and everything was exactly as I wanted. They were great with any design alterations I made through the process as well so I got my kitchen and dining room just how I wanted it! I renovated my house myself and Duane was very helpful on every step making sure I did everything properly and at the right time so they could install the cabinets in the correct timeline. They pointed me in the right direction for countertops as well, and were able to get me the best price! Halo® Exterra is designed for exterior applications. The panels are breathable, water resistive, energy efficient, durable and flexible, making them perfect for use in exterior walls in residential and commercial construction.
Halo® Subterra is for below-ground applications. Perfect for foundation walls, Subterra offers waterproofing protection to drain water away. Energy efficient, flexible and durable, Subterra also provides a radon barrier that is seven times higher than 6 mil polyethylene membranes.
Halo® Interra is created for interior applications. With its built-in vapor barrier, Interra eliminates the need for poly. It’s also reflective, meaning it can reflect heat back into the home or building. Like the other Halo® options, it’s energy efficient. Plus, no thermal barrier is needed with Interra.
Say Hello to ICF Besides Halo®, Swayze’s also offers LOGIX insulated concrete forms, known as ICF. ICF is a Styrofoam form that has a plastic framework that put together just like building blocks. Once placed, you fill the interior of these blocks with concrete, leaving a finished wall that is insulated and ready for exterior finish on one side and drywall on the other. Building with ICF is an excellent solution for many construction projects because the material is light to transport, handle and put together. There is less waste on the construction site because after the concrete pour, there is nothing removed from the concrete—increasing efficiencies for the project. Plus, the end product provides energy savings that are unmatched. If you are considering building a garage, a shed, a shop or a house, it is worth the conversation to learn about ICF from the Swayze’s team.

here are many fabrics for fashion and home these days and among them is linen. Not often the first thing to come to mind, linen is coming into its own in a big way for so many reasons. Linen is one of the most eco-friendly fibres available today, as well as one of the strongest natural fibres. “It’s not only beautiful, but it’s also wonderful for its thermoregulation properties,” says Jo Beach, owner of Cedar & Vine and linen enthusiast. “It draws heat away from the body, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.” Did you know linen comes from flax? It’s made from the cellulose fibres of the flax plant’s inner bark. These fibres are called ‘bast fibres,’ and after a lengthy process, the fibres are separated into ‘tow’ for coarse cloth like sacks, and ‘flax strick’ for linen. Linen was first used as far back as 7000 BCE, and the ancient Babylonians first started weaving flax. However, it was ancient Egyptians who became known for their linen use. Linen would grow in popularity over the centuries, and Europeans embraced the fabric. The American colonies would grow and weave their own linen until cotton became more economical in the 1800s. However, linen would remain a fashion staple and today, it’s making a major comeback.

Despite its reputation for wrinkles, linen fashion is supposed to be creased. “Embrace the wrinkles,” says Jo. “That’s part of linen’s comfortable, relaxing charm.” Jo also loves that linen, unlike many other fabrics, gets better with age. Linen clothing creates a connection with its wearer because it’s long lasting and retains its character for far longer. Beyond fashion, linen is also an excellent choice for home textiles. Linen sheets and duvet covers are not only gorgeous, but they are also practical, durable and functional. “Linen is wonderful in the home,” says Jo. “Linen, with its thermoregulating properties, is perfect for bedding. It’s cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and looks beautiful year-round. Plus, it’s so comfortable and long-lasting.” Linen bedding is not just about style—it’s also an investment in comfort and beauty.

“Our obsession with linen is no coincidence. In our current use-anddiscard society, we are returning to the simplicity of designing and creating investment pieces that are going to last. Although we may be biased, we believe there is no better material to start with when designing a quality piece,” says Jo. “Linen wear is made to live in and love for years. Even when pieces are worn, there is a desire to mend them and give them new life—rather than viewing them as discardable. We believe this connection is key in shifting towards a more sustainable mindset; in the way we think and feel about what we put on our bodies and in our homes.” Whether you love linen to wear or in the home, it’s a gorgeous fabric that will last and give you years of wear and comfort.

Refined Shop Local Holiday Gift Guide The holiday season is one that is filled with tradition. Whether it's decorating the tree with heirlooms from generations past, opening just one present on Christmas Eve, or diving into the family's favourite holiday treats, we all have something we do without fail because it wouldn't feel like Christmas without it. The other tradition you can start (and you may have done so already) is shop local this holiday season. Check out our first-ever Shop Local Holiday Guide and see what your friends, neighbours and colleagues have to offer this Christmas.
We also thought we'd share our own Christmas traditions with you. Have a look at what the Refined team enjoys over the holiday season. Brooke Ward Traditionally we decorate our tree while listening to Christmas carols. We craft away making new ornaments to put up and give away to family and friends. My favourite ornaments on our tree are the ones with pictures of our daughters from each year. We love baking—we make shortbread, gingersnaps, and gingerbread cookies to name a few. We wear matching PJs, then our girls get to open one early present. At night we cuddle and read Christmas stories and watch a Christmas movie before getting ready for Santa to come.
Brook Thalgott For us, Christmas begins by making apple strudel by hand with my mom about two weeks before the big day. My mom prepares the dough and we stretch it by hand over her kitchen table. My daughters, Violet and Ruby, develop their stretching skills every year. Once the dough is paper thin, it’s time for plenty of butter, apples, raisins, brown sugar and cinnamon. It’s carefully rolled, cut and baked to be ready for Christmas Day.
Ghislaine Moffitt
For us, Christmas time starts the day we get our Christmas tree (my two boys always pick out the nicest and biggest one!). We spend the evening decorating it all together while sipping eggnog or hot chocolate and listening to our favourite Christmas music. My in-laws usually come for a week over Christmas and New Year’s. We have our traditional French meat pie (Tortiere) Christmas Eve and play games or watch a Christmas movie. Christmas day we open our gifts and later have a feast of turkey and all the trimmings. It’s a wonderful time of year!
Darryl Ward Getting into the Christmas spirit means getting excited about picking out a tree, listening to Christmas music, enjoying a twinkle tour, and having a wonderful home-cooked dinner with family. These are just some of my favourite things to do over the holidays! The best is watching our grandson wake up so excited on Christmas morning! We enjoy watching festive films like: A Christmas Story, Charlie Brown Christmas and Elf (just to name a few). Playing board games and cards with our very competitive grandson is a must, and of course . . . visiting and tracking Santa online!
