LIVING
Attention Homeowners: Imagine a durable, versatile and attractive patio cover. One that delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm. Suncoast Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Our built-in guttering system effectively channels away rain runoff to prevent flooding and structural damage. The louvers are operated by a hand-held remote which is charged by an efficient solar panel. Open the louvers slightly to increase ventilation, or a full 180 degrees allowing maximum sunlight into your home. Suncoast Enclosures offers a screened-in, outdoor area that allows you to enjoy your deck, pool, spa or patio without the sense of being enclosed in an indoor space.

They Have a
PASSION
for Fashion
By Brooke Thalgott Photos Charlene Hourd Photography
F
or forty years, King’s Department Store has been making the men, women and children of Carlyle and area look great in stylish clothes for every occasion. They may be “middle-aged” in number, but they are definitely not in a fashion time warp after four decades. “We’ve been a fixture on Carlyle’s Main Street for a long time,” says owner Ken King. “However, we’re definitely not resting on our laurels.” King’s is still as fashion forward as it was when it opened in the late 1970s. It’s a destination for shoppers across the southeast and with good reason. King’s is home to all the same fashion brands you’ll find in a major shopping centre, without having to make a long drive.
8 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
For the ladies, the emphasis is not only on the best brands, but also the best fit. Home to popular designer Joseph Ribkoff among others, King’s and it’s attached sister store, 122 Main Fashion Boutique can style every woman. “We’re always seeking out the brands that are top of mind, and bringing them to Carlyle,” says Ken. “The store changes frequently as tastes and styles evolve.” For the gentlemen, dressing up isn’t something you do for just job interviews and weddings anymore. Men, especially the younger set, are looking for dressier, stylish threads for every day. “We’re seeing the shirt and tie make a real resurgence,” says Ken.
STYLE & BEAUTY
Under Armour, the popular fitness brand, is helping this trend towards dressier fashions grow. What started out as athletic wear is turning into a great line of clothing that can go from the gym to the office or the street. “We can get you out the door looking and feeling like a million bucks.”
THE STORE CHANGES FREQUENTLY AS TASTES AND STYLES EVOLVE.
For the feet, King’s is home to the ever-popular Birkenstocks sandals. The sandal, born in the 1960s, is making a resurgence with all ages. “The Birkenstock is a brand that truly has stood the test of time,” says Ken. “They have managed to create a shoe that makes a loyal customer from the first pair you ever own. They are stylish, comfortable and they last forever.” Whatever your closet might need — from outerwear to shoes to street wear, business attire and something for a special occasion — King’s has it for the whole family. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday on Carlyle’s Main Street, let the King’s team do what they do best — fashion. You can also like them on Facebook and Instagram to stay current on store sales, events and promotions. YOUR HEALTH
Nutrients from the
GARDEN
B
ackyard gardening can inspire you to take an interest in the origins of your food and make better choices about what you put on your plate. Growing your own food has many health benefits. It helps you eat more fresh fruit and vegetables as they are more plentiful and the flavour of food straight from the garden is amazing. When you grow your own food you have control over what chemicals and pesticides you put on them and you also control the harvest time. Fresh, local produce eaten soon after harvest and properly stored at cool temperatures between harvest and consumption are ideal for maximum nutrient content. Food that ripens in the garden has more nutrients and taste than vegetables and fruit that have to be picked early. Gardening has become just about the only way for most people to get truly nutritious food. The nutritional value of the food we eat depends on soil health and growing methods. Growing your own food isn’t rocket science; it’s actually very simple. It takes a little time, but things like tomatoes, lettuce, peppers — basic kitchen crops — are very forgiving. The best advice is to start small and plant things you would really like to eat. Pick a spot with at least six hours of good daytime light and access to water. Use good soil and talk to greenhouse operators or other gardeners in your area to get a sense of what grows well in your region and when to
14 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
YOUR HEALTH
plant. Consider using a raised garden bed, which allows you to control the soil and nutrient blend and also is easier on your back and knees. Be patient as you cultivate your relationship with your garden and the Earth. Before long you’ll reap the benefits and you may even see a little tinge of green on those thumbs. If you like the idea of gardening and fresh food but don’t have a space, check in your area for community garden space or check out your local Co-op grocery store. They proudly support Western Canadian producers. Co-op thinks home grown tastes better. That’s why they work hard to bring you the freshest Western Canadian produce. Look for this symbol: Grown At Home for Your Local Co-op. More people are joining the exciting movement of growing backyard gardens and choosing local, seasonal foods grown on a small scale without chemicals —and the reasons for doing so are diverse. Homegrown food almost always tastes better; growing backyard vegetables is fun and can save your family money; and buying produce from farmers nearby helps build a vibrant local economy. Gardening is a gentle, relaxing and stress-lowering form of exercise. When you grow your own food, you savor it more because of the effort it took to get to the table and the incredible fresh taste. You will be amazed by how much fun gardening can be, and the pride you take in sharing healthy food nurtured by your own efforts
BE PATIENT AS YOU CULTIVATE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR GARDEN AND THE EARTH. BEFORE LONG YOU’LL REAP THE BENEFITS AND YOU MAY EVEN SEE A LITTLE TINGE OF GREEN ON THOSE THUMBS.
And don’t stop there. Share your gardening love with friends and family. Help someone who wants to learn about growing food and give him or her a hand with their first garden. When given a chance, tell people — in spirit of caring and inspiration — what you know about the value of homegrown foods.

Summer Safety Tips for Pets

W
e are all glad to see the warmer weather finally arrive in South Eastern Saskatchewan. Much fun can be had in the summer, but the season can also present certain risks to our furry friends that they might not experience at other times of the year! The warmth of the sun is lovely and there are many outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in this part of the world but the sun also must also be respected! Shorthaired and lightly coloured pets are most at risk of becoming burned by the sun's rays. Pets that spend longer periods of time outdoors should always have some sort of shade provided for them to access as they wish. Sunburnt skin may be irritating and uncomfortable, but the real possible danger to our pets is the threat of
overheating. Long haired and short nosed pets have the highest risk of becoming over heated in the summer. Unfortunately overheating is not uncommon as temperatures soar, and can affect a pet very quickly. Pets simply cannot be left in parked cars, and should be closely monitored if spending extended periods of time outdoors. Signs of overheating can include vigorous panting, dry dark red gums, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and symptoms can progress to collapse, seizures and death. If you suspect that this is happening to your pet, call your closest vet as soon as possible! Hot summer days can lead to thunder filled nights, and a lot of our pets just can't handle the racket! Storm anxiety is common and summer fireworks, although beautiful, can also be fairly nerve wracking for some of our pets. Thundershirts are coats made for dogs and cats that fit snugly and have proven to provide a sense of protection to our "Nervous Nellies" out there. There are even special diets and supplements that are available that can help reduce anxiety! Ticks, fleas and mosquitoes are abundant and can be bothersome to our pets and
YOUR HEALTH
to ourselves as well. Luckily there are easy methods to reduce and prevent the threat these pesky pests pose. Monthly administration of certain veterinary approved products has proven to be quite effective in controlling summertime pests, killing many insects on contact before they even have a chance to bite your pet. Topical antihistamine pens are a handy tool to have around and can be applied to bites if they do occur in order to provide some relief from the itching they cause. If traveling is your plan for this summer, please consider your pets' needs before you set out on the road with them. If crossing the US border, your pet will require an up-to-date rabies vaccination and if traveling south they should be put on a preventative medication to protect them from the deadly Heartworm parasite. If your furry friends are visiting a boarding facility they should be currently vaccinated against kennel cough, a troublesome bacteria that can be spread from nose to nose contact or from coughing or sneezing pets. Have a fun summer and be safe out there!

SUMMER GAMES
O
n July 24, 2016 there will be a new village in Saskatchewan. It will be a vibrant, energetic village and one in which the average age is much lower than the typical Saskatchewan village. It is the Village of the Athletes of the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games. Josh Leblanc, chair of the athlete services committee, and soon to be appointed ‘Mayor of the Village’ comments, “It is hard for us to imagine the population of the village sometimes, as it will be larger than most of the small towns that surround Estevan. We are planning for 1,000 people to be in the Estevan Comprehensive School at one time. That is larger than the population of Bienfait.” Preparing for 1,800 athletes plus coaches, managers, mission staff, volunteers, and spectators to be in the ECS over the course

of the week of the Games is a monumental task. There are many logistics to consider. “Safety and comfort of the athletes is our primary concern,” states Leblanc, “Determining the traffic flow of the people in and out of the school is an important task. There are a lot of logistics to consider, however we have a great group of volunteers that have been putting a lot of thought into how the village will operate and I am very confident that we will be great hosts to our new residents.” Feeding 1,800 athletes is another big task the Mayor will oversee. “Chef Hack from the ECS will be in charge of the kitchen for the week of the Games. He was the chef of the 2008 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Weyburn and brings that knowledge with him, as well as overseeing the daily food

services at ECS. The menu has been developed with the input of nutritionists and is designed with athletes in mind. There are lots of factors to consider, from delivery of food, to borrowing oven space at Southern Plains Co-op to ensure quality and timely meals.” While the athletes are at the Games to compete, the host committee is working hard to ensure that the 2016 Games will be a memorable event for them. During their off competition time, there will lots to keep them entertained. “We have an amazing entertainment coordinator. Jody Abel of Weyburn is heading this for our committee and has so many great ideas.” Athletes will be able to participate in events such as dance parties, complete with confetti blasters and strobe lights; drive in style movies; arcades; and, arts and culture activities throughout the city. Quiet lounges as well as computer lounges will be set up for the athletes to utilize. Running a village is a big responsibility, but one that Leblanc is very excited about. “I have been involved in the planning of the Estevan 2016 Games for close to three years now. It is something never far from my mind. We have a great bunch of volunteers and the sponsorship and support of the community has been phenomenal. I am very excited to be part of energizing the City of Estevan with the Games and creating memories that will last a life time for the 1,800 athletes coming to reside in our village.”

orking together to build a healthy future means that everyone in the community benefits as The Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation Inc. continue to raise funds for a new hospital. The Mardi Gras Gala in February raised $7800 and over the past five years the annual golf tournament has raised over $1 million dollars. Dale Renz, co-chair of the golf committee explains, “The community has raised 20 million for building construction costs. That amount represents the required 20% of the projected costs of a new hospital. Our goal is to raise another 10 million for new and additional equipment that will be required.” The 2016 Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation (WDHF) Charity Golf Tournament and Fundraising Dinner will be held Tuesday July 12th at the Weyburn Golf Club. “We are very pleased with the many sponsors who have stepped up again this year lead
by our title sponsor Weyburn Security,” says Melanie Sorensen, office manager of WDHF. Jim Onstad of Weyburn Security believes very strongly in supporting the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation. “I have first-hand experience with understanding the value of a hospital in our community and knowing what financial commitments are required by a hospital in order to function well,” says Jim. “My wife is an ER/OR nurse who has worked in Weyburn for over 30 years. There is nothing more crucial to a community than quality medical care. That is why our company is passionate about supporting the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation.” Dale Renz and Al York, co-chairs for the 2016 WDHF Charity Golf Tournament share the following details about the upcoming event. “Our guest on the course and featured speaker ABOVE PHOTO: Images by Gillies

Jim began his professional career in 1973 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and played there until retiring to teach in 1976. In 2005 Jim became President and CEO for the Riders, and stayed there until his retirement in 2015.” Anyone golfing in the tournament will receive a signed photo with Jim Hopson. Al York wants the general public to know they are welcome to attend. “For those not able to join us on the golf course, a limited number of dinner tickets are available. The evening will include an always fantastic meal from the Weyburn Young Fellows Club, followed by Jim and our exciting live and silent auctions. In addition, Midale native Derek Meyers, Sports Reporter with Global TV in Regina, will be the MC for the evening.”
Your support of the fundraising events put on by the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation has a direct benefit to the community. The money raised helps to make Weyburn and area stronger and provides long term health benefits to all of the residents. There are many ways to get involved with this event including sponsoring a hole, donating live or silent auction items, entering a team of golfers or purchasing dinner tickets. AT HOME
Summer
is the Season for
EXTERIOR MAKEOVERS
YOU HAVE HEARD THAT IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT TO MAKE A LASTING FIRST IMPRESSION. The same theory applies to your house. Whether you’re getting ready to sell your home or simply want to make it more inviting for your friends and family, your home’s exterior appearance makes a difference. This summer invest in some changes that will enhance your home’s curb appeal and all around functionality. AT HOME
INDOOR/OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE A sunroom is an inviting and attractive addition to your home as well as adding extra living space. Sunrooms are versatile and can allow you to enjoy the outdoor experience even when the weather isn’t perfect. FRONT DOOR Your door is the gateway and the focal point to your home; make it as inviting and friendly as possible. A new front door instantly enhances your home’s appearance and can greatly increase resale value. You may not be ready to change the colour of your house, however, sometimes just changing the colour of the front door can make a huge impact. EAVESTROUGH SYSTEMS Summer months are an ideal time to replace an eavestrough system. Perhaps a system is not performing or has become outdated compared to the rest of your home. ROOFING A roof can account for 40 percent of a home’s look from the curb. Carefully consider what material will best complement your home. When replacing a roof, it’s best to tear off the old shingles rather than installing new over the existing. Removing the old shingles reveals any defects that should be fixed before the new roof is installed. WINDOWS You don’t have to put up with drafty rooms. Trade in old, energy-squandering windows for new, high-performance units. New, energy-efficient windows will pay for themselves through lower heating and cooling costs. When considering
new windows think about your budget, your home’s style and how you want the windows to perform. Prioritize the importance of ventilation, privacy, security and ease of maintenance. SIDING Refresh your homes exterior with new siding. An affordable option is vinyl siding. Once a bland material compared to wood, vinyl siding is now available in a wide variety of colors and styles (including accent pieces such as scalloped and square-cut shingles), so you’re likely to find something that suits both your taste and your budget. OUTDOOR LIGHTING Properly planned and installed outdoor lighting can add safety, style, and interest to your home. Path lighting is an important part of your outdoor lighting plan. Additionally, installing a security light will make it easier for late-night guests to find their way to your door. LANDSCAPING Curb appeal starts with quality landscaping that enhances the style of your home. Your lawn and yard can look just as beautiful as the rest of your home with proper care and maintenance. Landscaping doesn’t have to be expensive; only well thought out, interesting and cohesive. If your landscaping options are limited, consider purchasing container plants to add a bit of color to your porch or patio. If you’re not sure which colours or types of flowers to choose, enquire at your local greenhouse for specific advice. Still not sure what to plant? Call a professional landscaper, sit back and enjoy the results.

LARGE SCREEN ENCLOSURES OFFER BETTER

magine spending time on your deck or patio this summer without worrying about UV rays, high winds or mosquitos. You can do just that when you install a custom-built enclosure from Suncoast Enclosures. The Edmonton-based company, which has been serving Regina since 1999, offers a variety of options. In the Spring of 2015, the company opened a new showroom and retail space at 3401 Pasqua St. Regional manager Don Larwood says, “It’s a great location for people to come in to see samples, photos and get information on a beautiful and functional enclosure that would work for their home.”

Everything built by Suncoast Enclosures is designed and engineered to withstand the powerful wind, snow and hail experienced in Saskatchewan. This includes their popular 3-Season Sunrooms, Super Wind Screens and stylish Louvered Roofs. The 3-Season Sunroom, custom-built to any size, shape or colour, offers a bright, ventilated space with sliding windows and high-quality screens that provide shade and waterproofing. 3-season rooms can be pre-wired for electricity and can be used for about nine months a year with a small heat source. Another grade of screen can be used to create a super wind screen. From the inside, it allows a bright, clear unobstructed view as well as shade protection, and blocks 90 percent of the wind. Yet from the outside, it blackens out to create a privacy wall. This screen is popular withhomeowners who want to cut the wind but alsoenjoy the privacy that these screens provide. Another incredible solution for protection from sun and rain are their Louvered Roofs. They look like pergolas and have the benefits of a fully adjustable louvered system. Their eightinch blades are controlled by a self-sustaining, solar-powered remote to provide full to partial sun and rain protection.
While the company installs many of their products on new home builds, Suncoast Enclosures also works on older homes and cottages in rural communities. They’ve even done entire condominiums. Says Larwood: “Some of the comments we hear from clients are: ‘Why did we wait so long?’ and ‘Why did we make it so small?’ A lot of people say investing in an enclosure is the best money they’ve ever spent.”

ost people have heard the African proverb, ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’ but how many of us have really given it much thought? Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn not only think about that piece of wisdom; they live by it. Empowering children to make positive choices and building their self-esteem are key goals for this very focused organization.
According to Sept, there are recreational, in-school and individual mentorship programs which impact the lives of young people in the area. The Recreational programs are divided into two groups. Game On! and Go Girls are activity-based programs for students from grades six to eight. They involve various high interest activities including sports, crafts and more. The programs are designed to build self-esteem while encouraging healthy choices.
A SELECTION OF PROGRAMS “The program has changed a lot over the years. Big Brothers Big Sisters is something that all children can benefit from,” says Sharla Sept, Regional Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Weyburn.
The In-school Program allows mentors and participants to get together once a week during the school year over lunch hour. Mentors and students will have their lunch together and take part in activities at the school. For the individual program, mentors and

students usually meet once a week and take part in activities of their choosing. Sept explains that children and mentors are matched up according to interests. This gives them a common base to build a friendship upon. When a potential mentor contacts the organization, there is a bit of a screening process before being assigned to a child. Volunteers are given the option of which program they would like to take part in. PETER RYAN AND PAVLO For Peter Ryan and his young friend Pavlo, the Big Brothers Big Sisters In-school Program has worked very well over the past two years. Pavlo and his family came from the Ukraine and has enjoyed his time with his mentor very much. The pair enjoy lunch and sports every Wednesday. It has been a valuable experience for both. “It’s always fun to hang out and learn what it’s like to be an adult,” states Pavlo. As a volunteer for about six years, Ryan has found the experience very rewarding. “It’s great to give a young person a positive nudge in the right direction.” He encourages those interested in volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters Weyburn to take that step and make a positive difference in the life of a young person. A GREAT EVENT Sept invites everyone out to Big Rigs for Kids on July 30th. Come out and check out the trucks at the show and shine as the support Big Brothers Big Sisters! Registration is $75 per truck and anyone can register for this event. This great fundraiser will take place in the City Centre Mall parking lot from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admittance is free and it’s a great time for the entire family. BECOME PART OF THE VILLAGE You never truly know what positive impact you can be on someone’s life. “Just take a moment to think about the people who influenced you when you were young,” comments Sept. hopping locally means more to a community than most people realize. As a consumer, when you buy local, you enjoy benefits you can’t possibly get from shopping at national chains. Several studies show that when you buy from a locally owned business, rather than nationally owned businesses; significantly more of your money is used to make purchases locally. In doing so it strengthens the economic base of your community. In fact, one study found that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 remained in the community, while only $43 of each $100 spent at a nationally owned retailer stayed in the community. Online shopping at nationally owned chains have no positive impact on the well being of your community.

When you personally know the people behind the businesses where you’re shopping at, you enjoy a connection you would not otherwise have. It’s a great feeling shopping locally knowing that your dollars will continue to help grow your community. As a part of the community, local business owners have a strong understanding of the current local economics and the ever-changing wants and needs of their customer base. Local

These businesses are essential to charitable endeavours. Many of these people serve on boards and support a variety of causes and volunteerrun organizations. When a family or individual is going through hard times, local businesses are part of the rally to raise funds and provide support. In short, local business owners are invested in the community and they care about what happens to the people who live there. In uncertain economic times, local business owners look for solutions and opportunities to find positive outcomes for all. These unique local businesses create a diverse landscape and are what make your community stand out. Towns and cities across Canada have similar chain restaurants, grocery and department stores, but the diner down the street where you have breakfast every Saturday morning is one of a kind. The combined presence of your community’s many local businesses, are what make it different from every other place in the world. We embrace the idea of distinctive businesses with local character, but often forget their survival depends on our patronage. Buying local has benefits beyond mere convenience. When you support locally owned businesses, you get a better level of service and keep dollars in the community, while contributing overall to making your corner of the world a better place to live. COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS Keep your business looking professional and fresh by having your building exterior cleaned by the professionals at Pressure Force. A clean-looking storefront is welcoming and appeals to customers. “We will also wash the back doors and garbage cans of your business. Not only does a grimy back alley look bad, it can also attract unwelcome rodents and other critters,” states Bohnert. Food service businesses such as restaurants are wise to have their commercial buildings cleaned on a monthly basis due to a build up of grease and grime.

YOUR FLEET VEHICLES When it comes to maintaining a strong professional image, sparkling fleet vehicles speak loud and clear to clients. Pressure Force specializes in cleaning all types of fleet vehicles and can make them look brand new all over again. As Saskatchewan’s only Bio-Clean team member; you can be assured that Pressure Force uses the best soaps to get your vehicles looking spectacular.
YOUR CLEAN HOME It’s great to give the inside of your home a thorough cleaning and have a sparkling home. It gives you a sense of pride in your home and is important for keeping you and your family safe from allergens, pests, mold, potential household injuries and more. What about the outside of your house? Is keeping the exterior of your home clean an important part of your regular home maintenance? According to Aaron Bohnert, owner of Pressure Force, cleaning the exterior of your home on a regular basis has several advantages. When you have your home cleaned on the outside, it has more curb appeal which is attractive for the neighbourhood and appealing to
potential buyers. Because there is less risk of mold and mildew occurring, less home repairs will be required. Bohnert notes that having your roof washed every few years can make your home safe from toxins. “Algae feeds in the limestone of your shingles. It also blocks UV protection from the shingles which will make your attic hotter and less energy efficient. Washing your roof extends the life of the shingles,” he explains. Cleaning the exterior of your dwelling is a soft wash process. Bohnert advises to never use a pressure wash system on your home as it could cause damage to your siding and paint.
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
Bohnert points out that Pressure Force does more than wash your vehicles; they clean them. This is done by first doing a prewash and then a soak to make certain that all the grit and grime is eliminated from your investment. He also adds that at no time, will a brush ever be used on your vehicle. All this and with a savings to your company. Save your image, trust Pressure Force to clean your fleet! Pressure Force still offers cleaning services for oil patch and construction equipment. TRUSTING THE PROFESSIONALS Count on the expertise of Pressure Force for a truly professional and environmentally safe cleaning service. Pressure Force Weyburn, SK 306.861.6373 pressureforce.ca

ince 1979, York Jewellers has been providing Weyburn and southeast Saskatchewan with beautiful jewellery, watches and customized awards. It’s the place generations have shopped for the jewellery they have needed for the milestones of their lives — graduations, engagements, weddings, anniversaries and more. “We have been serving Weyburn since 1979 when my parents purchased the store,” says owner Al York. “They bought a store that has housed a jeweller for over 100 years.” You can see the history when you walk into York Jewellers. The original cabinetry remains; housing jewellery like it did a century ago. The store is also a huge part of their own family’s history. Al’s parents bought the store over 30 years ago, Al and his wife Jan took over in 1986, and now the third generation is part of the family business too. Al’s son Ryan joined the business a year and a half ago. “We’re part of Weyburn’s history, and the store is part of our family’s history,” says Al.
to give back to the city and people that have given so much to them. “We wouldn’t be where we are without the support of the community,” says Al. “We do what we can to give back whenever we can.” Over the years, Al and York Jewellers have been involved with many local initiatives, events and fundraisers. Al helped launch the first gym in Weyburn in the early 1980s and was heavily involved in the launch of the Weyburn Car Club Show and Shine 15 years ago. Plus, York Jewellers is always ready to help out the many local service clubs, sports teams and fundraisers around town. “We’ve been so fortunate to call Weyburn home and this is our way of saying thanks for all the support we have had throughout the years,” says Al. “When we work together to help each other, everyone benefits.” Make York Jewellers your stop for fine jewellery, watches and more.
York Jewellers is proud of their long-standing ties to the community they call home. Because of this, the family works hard

tarting a business involves a lot of research, planning and a great vision. But just as important as these start-up steps, is arranging the right financing package to get your business off the ground. Community Futures (CF) Sunrise provides business loans and advice to entrepreneurs in southeast Saskatchewan. We see many great ideas come through the door, and have found there are common elements to successful business loan applications. Want the inside scoop? Here are some insights into the criteria CF Sunrise uses when looking at business loan applications: 1. CHARACTER Character is a combination of your credit history, your training and work history, and any proven experience you have in management or running a business. Your personal experience and track record are
58 ReFined WEYBURN & AREA
important — the past is a good indicator of future success. Don’t be humble; this is the time to share relevant skills, abilities and past experience. 2. CAPACITY Capacity refers to your ability to take on and repay debt based on the earning potential and cash flow of the business. We look at your business plan very carefully to determine the strength and marketability of your idea. If you’re planning to take over an existing business, we’ll evaluate the historical financial statements of the business. It’s really important that your numbers reflect the viability and potential of the business. Numbers can definitely tell a story! 3. CONDITIONS When assessing a loan request, we take great care to understand the market and conditions in which you will operate your business. Providing information in your business plan that describes the industry outlook and your own marketing strategies is crucial.
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
4. CAPITAL Capital includes your personal and company net worth. Make sure you know how much money you will invest into the business in ‘sweat’ and real equity, and how much you’re looking for in financing. 5. COLLATERAL All business lenders will be interested in the security you can provide for the loan funds that are requested. Make sure you can provide a list of items you own and any existing loans tied to those assets. If you plan to buy business assets with the loan funds, provide details of the asset value and where you plan to purchase these items. Your chances of obtaining a business loan depend on how your application is assessed in each of these areas. By becoming familiar with these five criteria, you can ensure that your loan application and business plan demonstrate the creativity, energy, management skills and drive behind your idea. CF Sunrise is there to assist you in achieving your business goals!

2017 Ford GT
A Legend in the Making
THE 2017 FORD GT IS WHAT TRUE INNOVATION LOOKS LIKE. From its 3.5L EcoBoost® technology to its ultra-efficient aerodynamics, the Ford GT is the culmination of everything great that Ford is famous for. This Ford GT is the ultimate expression of form following function. Its teardrop- shape body is the result of extensive work in the wind tunnel. The carbon-fibre body and its projected 600plus horsepower 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 engine are the ultimate expressions of technological innovation. Ford is targeting the best power-to-weight ratio—of any car in the market. Although Ford has yet to reveal the GT’s weight, it’s expected to be crazy light. As for the engine, Ford promises more than 600 horsepower.
Riding on what Ford calls an “active” suspension, the GT can lower itself at speed for stability and better aerodynamics. In true supercar form, a button in the cabin can lift the front end when faced with inconsiderately designed driveway ramps and speed humps. Innovation. That’s what the Ford GT is all about. From its aerodynamically optimized shape to its multifunctional buttresses to its extraordinarily powerful 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 engine, everything about the Ford GT is designed to deliver pure performance.
Whether on the road or on the track, every single element of the Ford GT was designed to deliver the extraordinary speed and exceptional handling found only in purpose-built racing cars. The GT’s rear spoiler is full of tricks, including an air-brake function. The wing can both rise vertically and tilt, its horizontal surface angling upward to capture extra downforce and drag when needed.

istory is something that fascinates us. Children study it in school, musicians write songs about it, Hollywood turns historical events into blockbusters. We just can’t get enough of it.
Located a little under an hour west of Weyburn, the town of Ogema is an enchanting community that’s home to about 320 residents. This welcoming town is immersed in a rich history.
offers tours every Saturday and Sunday from June to October. Guests experience a bit of the past as they travel on a fully restored passenger train from the 1920’s. Your voyage wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Deep South Pioneer Museum. This pioneer village features 30 restored period buildings from Ogema and area. A real opportunity to see what life was like when Saskatchewan was just beginning. Specialty tours and charters are available for your enjoyment.
Settled in 1908, Ogema didn’t receive a post office until 1911 and was incorporated in 1912. The name of the town is Cree meaning ‘Big Chief.’ Lots for Ogema were being sold by the Canadian Pacific Railway who was, at that time, building a passage west through the southern prairies.
The town welcomes residents and visitors alike to the Ogema Fair on July 9th and Museum Day on July 10th. It’s sure to be a great time for the whole family. Don’t miss your chance to experience the prairies of yesterday!
In keeping with the love of history, Ogema is home to Saskatchewan’s only tourist rail line. Southern Prairie Railway
