The impetus of

Renewal

P

Preface With the impetus of renewal Europe is in need of a renewal. Hungary has em-

barked on the road of renewal. To do so, it is not enough to make good economic decisions but also mental and spiritual efforts are needed. The Government of Hungary has, at the request of the Protestant Churches, established the Reformation Memorial Committee to commemorate this outstanding event and subsequent process among the many historical movements of renewal in a dignified way. “Reformation”, the movements safeguarding and re-discovering the foundations of Churches and renewing the life and thinking based on faith are as old as the Church itself. Protestant reformation started 500 years ago and has been ongoing for 500 years. It has not only influenced the life of our continent in a significant way but also the history of the whole Carpathian basis, the culture of our country, the establishment of the national language, the enrichment of scientific life and the development of national identity and economy.

Zoltán Balog Minister of Human Capacities, Acting President of the Reformation Memorial Committee

A foretaste of rich heritage Today’s people can also learn from the 16th century reformation and its century-spanning effects: how to renew and reform in a way which leads to co-operation and not schism. Today differences between the Churches may be interpreted as the richness of faith, while a productive theological debate can be conducted about these differences. If we bear in mind what serves at the same time the benefit of the People, and not only the benefit of Church Members and the glory of God, then the Commemorative Year of the Reformation will be worthy of the heritage of those people who made the biggest sacrifice possible for their faith and country.

I am writing this lines during Advent. At the time of anticipation. In addition to the usual antici-

pation, there is the anticipation of and preparation for the anniversary year. On the verge of 2017, approaching the 500-year milestone when the Commemorative Year of the Reformation starts, we would like to show as much as possible from the many values relating to the Reformation. The Carpathian Basin is particularly rich in these treasures since not only has the Reformation arrived at Hungarian soil early on, but it has fundamentally influenced the Hungarian history and the fate of our nation. Today – after difficult centuries – we can particularly wonder at the blessing of the Reformation since we are aware of the fact that this heritage enriches our nation.

This programme catalogue has not been drawn up as an exhaustive list. After all, it is not possible to list either the most important facts of the European and Hungarian impact of the Reformation or every event commemorating the Reformation since the organisers themselves know of more than a thousand programmes around the Carpathian basin. However, we warmly think of the fact that every settlement and community has found its own way to organise a worthy commemoration. Let this catalogue be a teaser of the widespread offer which shows that we would like to build a rich future on the basis of our rich heritage and good examples. After all, the issue at stake is not only whether we will properly come to know our heritage and process the events and occurrences of the last 500 years, but also how we will prepare for the next 500 years.

K ároly Hafenscher Ministerial Commissioner, responsible for helping the work of the Reformation Memorial Committee

1.2 National Opening Event of the Ecumenical Week of Prayer DATE:

15 January 2017 6:00 p.m. VENUE:

Calvinist Church at Kálvin Square, Budapest 5

The ecumenical week of prayer will be organised by the Ecumenical Council of the Hungarian Churches between 15 and 22 January 2017. Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom–Budapest and Péter Gáncs, President-Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church will preach at the national opening service.. The leaders of the Member Churches in the Ecumenical Council of the Hungarian Churches will participate in the rite. The jubilee of the Reformation defines the ecumenical week of prayer in 2017. As Pope Francis and the President of the Lutheran World Federation opened the commemorative year with a joint penitential and thanksgiving service in Lund therefore it is also important with regard to the Hungarian ecumenical relationships that the participants confess the following at the beginning of the week of prayer: it hurts them to see the fragmented state of the Church and they repent the sins committed against each other and give thanks to the Lord of History for His great deeds so as they can afterwards join together and continue to render their services to others and to the world with a renewed spirit.

1.3 Reformation 500 Public Installation DATE:

From May 2017 VENUE:

Kálvin Square, Budapest 7

The winning work of the public installation competition announced for the 500th anniversary of Reformation can be seen at Kálvin Square in Budapest from 26 April 2017. Based on the concept of Hetedik Műterem Kft, 95 pieces of unique concrete pavement are laid at the Baross street part of Kálvin Square. Passers-by can read such quotations from international and Hungarian thinkers on the public artwork that document the history of impacts of Reformation; some of them are also in English or German. The work becomes one with the square, while it barely noticeably emerges from the square as well. Later anybody can visit, share or even adopt the paving stones recalling the 500-year-long memories of Reformation on the website of the artwork. The installation will be exposed prior to the ceremonial opening of the “IGE-IDŐK” (TIMES FOR PRAYER) grand exhibition of the history of Reformation, hosted by the National Museum.

1.4 „IGE-IDŐK” Jubilee Exhibition in the Hungarian National Museum DATE:

26 April 2017 – 31 December 2017 VENUE:

Hungarian National Museum, Budapest 9

If written as one word, the Hungarian word “igeidők” would only refer to the trinity of past, present and future known from grammar. Since the word is written with a hyphen, it is obvious that we (also) refer to something else, something (also) in a figurative sense. We refer to Reformation, which connects the past (its history), the present (its ever-present and unavoidable achievements) and the future (its spirit and opportunities). We refer to the prayer, which not only expresses action, events and existence – although Reformation may be told within this trinity as well – but also alludes to the word of God, the Bible. The jubilee exhibition IGE-IDŐK is realised in a broad co-operation and it is not only a historical, cultural historical, media historical event but also an occurrence which makes us aware that the gains of Reformation are an integral part of everybody’s life. Therefore the curators intend to use several instruments. IGE-IDŐK is a traditional exhibition using hubs with new approaches and digital museum technology. It intends to provide us with background information, interpretations and entertainment through its publications – catalogues in a style of a handbook, family study booklets, guides – and side-events. The museum pedagogues will make it all come to life for the students as well. As a travelling exhibition it will reach the smaller settlements and rural towns in the Carpathian basin as well. The Hungarian National Museum – as the first autonomous national and cultural institution – is a worthy location for this exhibition using a new approach by focusing on self-reflection in place of self-representation. An international round-table discussion (Politics and Confession) will be organized during the opening of the exhibition. The participants are looking for answers to the questions of what the Protestant faith has given in their profession and what Protestantism is today in Europe.

1.5 Reformation Memorial Park DATE:

June 2017

VENUE:

Buda Castle District, Murad Pasha Bastion

11

In the context of the commemorative year, the memorial park will be created with a symbol worthy of the jubilee, a fountain. Thanks to the local government of the Buda Castle District and major Gรกbor Tamรกs Nagy, the memorial park will be at a featured location, close to the cradle of Hungarian Reformation, on the Murad Pasha Bastion. This closed, calm but frequented location is perfectly suitable for accommodating the memorial of Reformation. The main aim is to create a simple and moderate memorial in line with the Protestant values where all believers can feel reassured and be immersed in their own thoughts concerning rejuvenation. The professional quality of the project is guaranteed by the Hungarian Academy of Arts (MMA), which launched a competition to which six outstanding architects were invited and provides professional management to the programme. Gyรถrgy Fekete, President of MMA, an interior decorator awarded with a Kossuth and Munkรกcsy prize is also among the renowned members of the competition jury.

2.4 Reformation 500 Film Days DATE:

9–12 February 2017 VENUE:

Uránia National Film Theatre, Budapest 39

The impact of Reformation goes far beyond the borders of theology. The thoughts of the Reformers had an effect on science, music, law, economy, politics, arts and even cinema. A series of films will be shown on the 500th anniversary of Reformation between 9–12 February 2017 in the joint organisation of the Reformation Memorial Committee and the Uránia National Film Theatre. The films in the programme draw our attention to the events transpiring 500 years ago and their effects. There are such curiosities in the programmes as a series of films made in different eras and genres depicting the life of Luther or a film about the life of the great Protestant philosopher and doctor, A lbert Schweitzer. The film days will be made more colourful by screenings for schoolchildren and family programmes at the weekend.

The musical heritage of Reformation lives on in one of the most famous ensembles of the world, the choir of the St. Thomas Church of Leipzig. The school and boy choir of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig was founded more than 800 years ago in 1212 therefore it counts as one of the oldest operating schools in Germany today. The choir will sing the works of Bach and his less known contemporaries at concerts in Müpa, the Reformed Great Church of Debrecen and in Pécs (Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul) during their Hungarian tour. They will also be involved in a church service in the Lutheran Church of Deák Square since the “Thomanerchor” is still the Liturgical Choir of the St. Thomas Church today.

country-wide, in regional division

49

Last summer the Reformation Memorial Committee, the State Secretariat responsible for Education within the Ministry of Human Capacities and the Office for Education announced the complex cultural quizzes “Re: formation – renewing world” and “Re: formation – cultural treasure hunt” for students in primary and secondary schools. The interest was considerable. After pre-registration, 1,500 students in 300 teams from almost 130 schools participated in the first on-line round on 5 December 2016. From the rounds, 36 teams qualified for the semi-finals to be organised in April 2017. National finals is to be held in September 2017; the final of the students in secondary school will be broadcast live by Hungarian Television. The tasks stretch back to the age of Reformation 500 years ago and require the knowledge of the events and actors of the age. On the other hand, they explore the cultural and societal results of the occurrences that are still in evidence today, as well as examine Reformation as a prospective chance meaning renewal. The professional background of the cultural quiz is provided by the Reformed Pedagogical Institute and the Lutheran Institute of Education Management and Training. Special prizes await the winners.

The Reformation Memorial Committee has supported the publication of three popular volumes edited according to academic standards. The title of the book series: The Treasures of Reformation. The first volume dealing with the history and current state of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary and edited by I st vá n K ollega Ta r soly and Elenóra Kovács was introduced in December 2015. The series will be extended with two more volumes in 2017. The aim of the second volume is to review the Reformed Church in Hungary, while the third volume will introduce the smaller Protestant (Unitarian, Pentecostal, Baptist and Methodist) denominations present in Hungary. The common objective of the volumes is to reveal the cultural and historical values given by Reformation to Hungarian society. The texts contain several interesting details that are introduced to the readers in small chapters, structured around a key event, person, building, object, work of art or institution.

Sándor Faggyas and András Korányi: Reformation for 500 years

Sárospatak, The Calvinist Parish of Sárospatak, 2016

Federation of Protestant Journalists, 2016

“The essence of Reformation is to open new perspectives to mankind by returning to the Holy Bible.” This volume is supposed to introduce the 500-year-long history of Reformation since the jubilee is an outstanding occasion to better understand what this reform process had given to Europe and the entire world. This little book does this: illustrated with black and white pictures, giving short and reasonable explanations to a given concept, while introducing the great figures of Reformation to the reader.

Or “with a grain of salt” – as the Latin title of the book says. Faithfully to its title, the book contains various recipes the descriptions of which are spiced up by history since the volume commemorates prince Ferenc R ákóczi I and his wife, Zsuzsanna Lorántffy. Because when we consume the food of our ancestors then the past becomes the present with all the values according to which they had lived. In addition, culture historical excerpts, pictures and biblical citations can be found between the individual recipes.

József Dinnyés (ed.): The Singing Hymn-book of Gál Huszár

Budapest, Press-Pannonica-Media–Amfipressz 2016

József Dinnyés, 2016

As it is clear from its title, this volume introduces the heroes of the Protestant faith to the interested readers in the perspective of the last five centuries. The book present exactly 50 significant Hungarian protestant personalities “who had been living for the benefit and improvement of their country and God’s glory.” The book introduces the personal path and writings of preachers, teachers, scientists, writers, and politicians who had been going through very different lives while still experiencing a life full of faith.

Gál Huszár is a defining figure of Hungarian Reformation, both of his hymn-books are significant documents of their age. Some of the treasures hidden in the hymn-book of 1560 are sung by József Dinnyés who is one of the missionaries of the Reformation’s messages in the entire Carpathian Basin. He visits villages, communities, assemblies with a guitar and lyre and introduces the present message of Reformation with signing and through literary and historical curiosities. József Dinnyés recoded a CD of the songs of Gál Huszár and published them in an accompanying booklet, together with a current sheet music.

3.7 Exploration of the Protestant Past Recent Past is a Part of the 500 Years PROJECT PERIOD:

2016–2017 63

The history of the Protestant Churches during the years of Communism will be reviewed in a common project of the Reformation Memorial Committee, the Committee of National Remembrance and the Calvinist Centre of Public Life and Culture, with an emphasis on the relationship between the revolution of 1956 and Protestantism. Even today there are several undiscovered events and periods in the history of the contemporary Hungarian Protestants in the Carpathian Basin. Hungarian Protestants were forced to confront the everyday challenges of the church policy governed by the one-party state on the level of church districts, dioceses and assemblies during the decades following World War 2, in the days of the Communist dictatorship. Even though the discovery, presentation and scientific analysis of the past – the dilemmas and various forms of behaviour (active and passive resistance, adaptation/ survival, collaboration) dictated by the ecclesiastical policy of the dictatorship under the one-party state – has already begun, there are still many tasks left for the researchers. Researches related to the history of the Protestant Churches serve a dual purpose. On the one hand, basic research is required, which includes the processing of documents in ecclesiastical and state archives that are still undiscovered and, on the other hand, the discovered knowledge must be published and introduced to the wider audience. These objectives can be achieved by organising conferences, publishing professional and educational papers, organising travelling exhibitions and designing thematic home pages. The project is planned to be implemented with the involvement of public collections and researchers in Hungary and across the borders. 3.7.1 Life Interview Series about the Memories of the Past Decades PROJECT PERIOD:

65

2015–2017

The decades of Communism still hold many secrets. Files and documents do not always answer a clarifying query therefore we need to get into the possession of oral memories. Our nation commemorated the 60th anniversary of the 1956 revolution and freedom fight in the year before the Commemorative Year of the Reformation, which highlighted how important it is to supplement our current knowledge with trustworthy memoirs of eye witnesses still living among us. The decades since the end of World War 2 are also a part of the 500-year-long history of Reformation. Gyula Hosszú is making a film about the still-living witnesses of this era with the contribution of the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church, the Transylvanian Reformed Church District and the Ráday Collection. The life interview film provides future generations and historians with important documents. After editing the interviews discovering the past will be continuously uploaded on the home page of the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church.

4.1.1 The Children of Reformation

The commemorations held by the Reformed Church in Subcarpathia on the occasion of the Reformation year are not linked to ancient buildings, amazing and archaic works of art or popular or scientific church history programmes. They much rather address the present and future developments of Reformation. Based on the decision of the synod of the Reformed Church in Subcarpathia, the programme “Children of Reformation” was launched under the spiritual leadership of bishop Sándor Z án Fábián, which will work to ensure that there are Hungarian children born in Subcarpathia in the 500th year of the Reformation who pass along the gifts of the Hungarian nation and Protestant faith. “The time spent with the family and the future generation results in a hundredfold return,” said the bishop when expressing his hope that the churches can be full of life and children. This is a programme strengthening faith, hope, attitude and wisdom since it is built on the co-operation of the Hungarian Protestant families. Children are God’s greatest gift and we invite people to accept and keep this gift in the framework of the programme “Children of Reformation”. They do not offer an easy living or-a more carefree future, but blessing. In the framework of the programme, every Subcarpathian Hungarian family will be visited with the intent to be encouraged to have children. Presentations will be given, supporting programmes are organised, and supporting teams are set up that can be the tools of Providence promulgated by the Church according to its essence. Doctors, caregivers and teachers will be involved in this amazing initiative which has become a church movement. The Reformation Memorial Committee gladly supports the programme – in the conviction that the project will continue even after the end of the Commemorative Year of the Reformation.

70

4.1.2 Luther – the Card Game 71

“Luther – the Card Game” released for the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Reformation is a board game which, through the logics of the nowadays popular strategic board games, introduces the players to the life of the great Reformer, Martin Luther. Although it is very suitable for educational purposes in religious classes and schools, the young team developing the game has specifically created such a board game which, due to its smart, tactics-based system of rules, offers an entertaining and exciting time spent together with the family or friends. The card game to be developed with the support of the Reformation Memorial Committee is a progressive initiative which has a serious chance to achieve success on the international scene as well.

4.2 Organs and Churches The commemoration of the jubilee of Reformation is not only about the diverse programmes, but also about the worthy commemoration of our ecclesiastical memories, the places of piety and the measures of religious practice. Therefore the Reformation Memorial Committee supports several projects that assist in the renewal of these. Such a programme is the restoration of the organ in the Reformed “small church” of Debrecen or the building of the organ of the Lutheran Church located at the Bécsi kapu Square in Budapest. The organ in Debrecen is a musical instrument of historical value which is the “copy” of the church organ of Calvin’s church in Geneva, while a new baroque-style organ is built in the capital which will be suitable for the authentic performance of the organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach. All the organ works of Bach are performed for the first time in this church. In addition, two rural churches will be renovated: the Lutheran church in Sárvár, and the Calvinistchurch in Tomor. The Reformation Memorial Committee does not support this as an investment programme, but as a location of related community programmes.

4.1.3 The Calvinist Collective Archives and Museum in Transylvania 73

The old wish of the Transylvanian Reformed Church District was realised in 2015 when the Calvinist Collective Archives could be re-opened in Cluj-Napoca and the Calvinist Museum in Transylvania could open its doors to the public. The procurement of facilities and equipment (furniture, shelf systems, IT infrastructure, storage) required for the functions planned in the building renovated with the support of the Government of Hungary was supported by the Reformation Memorial Committee within the category concerning the safekeeping and preservation of values. An exhibition called 1956 in Transylvania was opened where the surveillance documents and protocols are presented and the interested public can see the works of art made by the members of the Hungarian Academy of Arts responding to the 12 glorious days of the revolution and honouring the victims of volley-firings. Different accompanying programmes, museum educational activities, exhibition guides, musical and literary walks and educational lectures are linked to the 2017 exhibitions.

The Carpathian Basin 77

The Reformation Memorial Committee launched two photo competitions, one in the autumn of 2015 and one in the spring of 2016. The artists could formulate the heritage and message of the Reformation by means of photography. The title of the exhibition showcasing the competition and the winning entries is “The Impetus of Renewal”, which is also the motto of the commemorative year. The aim of both the Reformation Memorial Committee and the exhibition is that, in addition to the church commemorations, the 500-year-old Reformation is introduced to the wider public in the 2017 commemorative year; the basic feature of Reformation is that it can always present us with something new while preserving its heritage. The photo exhibition launched in 2016 could be first visited by the public in the Liszt Ferenc Conference and Cultural Centre, in Sopron. Due to its success, many locations became eager to hold such an exhibition. The Reformation Memorial Committee tries to meet all invitations therefore the photo exhibition The Impetus of Renewal is planned to be continuously open in different venues during the Commemorative Year of the Reformation. Preliminary venues include the following: Baktalórántháza, Budapest (Fészek Club, Klebelsberg Culture Mansion, Culture Centre in the Marczibányi square), Southern Land (Délvidék), Eperjes (Prešov, Slovakia), Gyöngyös, Hódmezővásárhely, Nagybereg (Velyki Berehy, Subcarpathia), Nagykanizsa, Nagykároly (Carei, Partium), Sárvár, Szekszárd, Tata, Zirc.

As a bottom-up initiative, a movement had started whose members undertook to run 1,517 kilometres until the jubilee in an individual programme. A closed Facebook group had also been created for this purpose where the registered members are able to record their performance in a table. Around 250 participants held a trial competition in Csákvár in the Vértes Hills (“the Paradise of orienteers”) in the autumn of 2016. In the competition, all participants could run a distance according to their potential (age group). All the distances were in some way related to number 1517. With the joint organisation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary, a national running competition is planned to be held in September 2017 as a celebration of the movement called “Reformation will Move You”. 5.5 Planting of Seedlings to the Soil of Reformation

83

Who would not have heard of the famous saying of Luther: “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree. A tree is planted for the future, even if the future seems uncertain many times. The Reformation Memorial Committee and the Minister of Agriculture jointly offers a chance to every Protestant assembly to plant a fruit tree on the occasion of the 500th jubilee of the Reformation. The trees symbolize that Reformation found a fertile soil in Hungary, put down deep roots and bears the fruit of faith every day. Remembering the past for the future.

7.1 Reformation Memorial Committee About the committee The Reformation Memorial Committee was established by the Government of Hungary by Government Decision No. 1780/2013 (X. 29.) at the initiative of the Reformed Church in Hungary and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary. The Committee supports the Government as a body for proposal-making, reflection and coordination in terms of the commemorations, events, educational programmes related to the 500th anniversary of Reformation, and prepares the decisions and monitors the programmes in terms of the public funds earmarked for the programmes. The task of the Committee:

101

The worthy commemoration on the 500th anniversary of universal Reformation, celebration of the Hungarian heritage of Reformation and a large-scale demonstration of the values of Reformation. At the meeting of the Reformation Memorial Committee on 13 October 2016 the preparations were summarized and the programmes were launched in the month of Reformation, which will show the cultural, social and political impact of Reformation to the entire Carpathian Basin and, through the international relationships, to the whole of Europe. President of the Committee: Dr Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister Acting President of the Committee: Zoltán Balog, Minister of Human Capacities Ministerial Commissioner responsible for helping the work of the Reformation Memorial Committee: Dr K ároly H afenscher Permanent members of the Committee: Dr László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly Dr János Lázár, Minister of Prime Minister’s Office Miklós Soltész, Minister of State for Churches, Minorities and Civil Affairs Dr István Szabó, Ministerial President of the Synod of the Reformed Church in Hungary, Bishop Péter Gáncs, President-Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Dr Balázs Bábel, member of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop of Kalocsa-Kecskemét József Csomós, Bishop of the Cistibiscan Reformed Church District Dr Tamás Fabiny, Bishop of the Northern Lutheran Church District János Papp, President of the Hungarian Baptist Church Béla K ató, Bishop of the Transylvanian Reformed Church District Dr Vilmos Fischl, Secretary-General of the Ecumenical Council of the Hungarian Churches Gergely Prőhle, National supervisor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary László Köntös, Director of the Reformed Collections of Pápa Dr Eleonóra Kovács, President of the Collection Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary

Bishop, as a representative of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Dr Péter Hoppál, Minister of State for Culture The Committee meets twice a year. In the last years it set out the principles according to which the programmes and projects related to the anniversary had been inspired, supported and developed. The aim of the Committee is not to overtake the duties – related to the jubilee – of the Churches, but, by coordinating and supplementing the duties, to strive to widely transmit values to the population of the entire Carpathian Basin and introduce the opportunities for all-time renewal through the treasures of Reformation. The default position of the Reformation Memorial Committee is that we do not only commemorate the 500th anniversary of Reformation, but also strive to raise an awareness of the fact that Reformation has been going on for 500 years so tradition and reform are strongly interrelated. The following are the priorities of the Committee: - raise the awareness of young people of the richness of Reformation, with its messages and impact lasting to this day; -demonstrate the historical significance of Protestantism to the entire society; -support the common authentic action and testimony of the Churches; -support the renewal in the professional, family and economic life by introducing Protestant Ethics; -to enable the people to get an understanding of the Faith and more specifically Protestantism, which is a binding force to the Hungarian people in the Carpathian Basin.
