P
uzzle is a closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family or the tightknit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. That begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being quite good at it. After years of concerning herself exclusively with the needs and wants of her husband Louie and sons Ziggy and Gabe, Agnes has found something that she wants to do. Stepping out of her domestic bubble to pursue her new hobby, Agnes meets Robert, a wealthy, reclusive inventor who immediately recognizes her talent and recruits her as his partner for an upcoming world-jigsaw tournament. Each day she spends out in the world, puzzling and conversing with Robert, takes Agnes further along on the road to a new understanding of herself and her strengths. With that understanding come new insights and an assertiveness that finds her speaking out on her own behalf and pushing back against the assumptions and routines that have, until now, defined her role in her family. hana Feste teams up with a star-studded cast anchored by Christopher Plummer and Vera Farmiga in Boundaries, a story about a mother, her awkward son, her estranged father and the road trip of a lifetime. The story follows Laura (Vera Farmiga), a struggling single mother in her thirties, who has an extraordinary love for stray dogs and cats. She lives with her maladjusted, yet exceptionally talented, 14-year-old son Henry (Lewis MacDougall). With a knack for mischief, Henry has just been expelled from school for drawing a naked portrait of his principal. In order to get Henry into an art school where he can thrive, Laura strikes a deal with her estranged, pot-dealing misfit of a father Jack (Christopher Plummer), who has just been kicked out of yet another nursing home for his nefarious activities. If she drives Jack to California, he will give her the money she needs for Henry’s tuition. But the road trip veers off course quickly and often when Jack decides to make a couple of stops to visit his art-forging friend (Christopher Lloyd) and old Hollywood client (Peter Fonda). At the same time, Henry is asking to see his deadbeat dad Leonard (Bobby Cannavale). Opens in theatres on June 22, 2018.

The Movie grossed more than $600 million around the world, you are invited to return to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi in an all-new, original musical based on the songs of ABBA. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Phyllida Lloyd, Richard Curtis and Nicky Kentish Barnes also serve as executive producers. Reprising their roles from Mamma Mia! The Movie are Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep as Donna, Julie Walters as Rosie and Christine Baranski as Tanya. Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper reunite as Sophie and Sky, while Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Oscar ® winner Colin Firth return to play Sophie’s three possible dads: Sam, Bill and Harry. As the film goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present, Lily James will play the role of Young Donna. Filling the roles of Young Rosie and Young Tanya are Alexa Davies (A Brilliant Young Mind) and Jessica Keenan Wynn (Broadway’s Beautiful). T
he Sundance Film Festival is always abuzz with activities and stars ready to talk up their latest project. Screening a film for the first time with the director, actors and crew heightens the excitement, while everyone waits to see how the crowd reacts. Actor and director Ethan Hawke has presented over thirteen films at Sundance in years past, so he is no stranger to the Sundance scene. Comments Hawke, “This is my first year as a director, and it has given me a new outlook on the festival. I was a part of something before, but when you’re the director, it’s kind of like you host the party and want everyone to have a wonderful time. One of the most exhilarating things is that you sit in a screening with people who start to understand what you’re trying to communicate. It feels like sharing a dream, and now they’re laughing, crying and feeling it. It’s an amazing high!” While an actor turning to directing is not a surprising turn of events, musicians turning into visual storytellers can be quite refreshing. Such is the case with the film Sorry to Bother You, written and directed by hip-hop recording artist Boots Riley. Lakeith Stanfield plays a telemarketer who tries to find his identity as an African-American man who doesn’t want to be seen as a sellout. Absurd and satirical, it tackles the social standards and interactions that people can lull themselves into experiencing. Films that focus on a specific persona or character are the usual bread and butter of Sundance, but in the last few years, there has been a great surge in the horror and thriller genre. One of the films that made cinephiles delve into that unknown is Ari Aster’s Hereditary. This film pushes the mind as the story unveils startling and disturbing events. Another film that made midnight waves at this year’s festival is Assassination Nation. A crowd favorite, this film has all the potential to become a cult favorite. Centered around four teenage girls, who quickly become trigger-happy after their personal texts are hacked, Assassination Nation explores the culture of a real-world scenario given the adolescent obsession with digital communication. Established talent and creators also look for the limelight that only Sundance can bring. While writer Tony Gilroy is a first-timer, his cards were played right when Sundance veterans, director Brad Anderson and leading man Jon Hamm, signed onto his film Beirut. Film Guide caught up with Gilroy

and Hamm at the Beirut premiere, where we asked them to share some insight about the story. “Thirty years in the business, and I’ve never been here. I am here for the first time, for my first Sundance film screening,” said writer Tony Gilroy. “It’s funny, for this is actually one of the first scripts that I wrote thirty years ago, and I’m laughing because it got me here. It will be a very unusual experience for me. Very exciting.” Said leading man Hamm, “I play Mason, a negotiator working for the government in Beirut. The film takes place in the early 70s, then flashes forward to 1982 where the political climate has shifted dramatically in Lebanon. The movie is really about what happens when conflicting parties stop talking, and I think in that way, it’s a relevant story to our current political climate. Mason’s past and skillset comes into play as he works to get parties to start listening, talking and hopefully agreeing.” The culmination of Sundance and festival films is measured in passion and interest; money may not be present or even expected. Creation is the reward that all involved seek; a story, a character, the edit or perhaps the score. They all build upon the idea that film can be redefined and consumed in different ways. And while you may not have attended Sundance, you can, and will, be part of the experience every time you attend a movie at a Regal theatre.

FG: The title character Tully is a pivot for change and realization in the film. How did you explain the character to Mackenzie Davis? DC: Since Jason is directing the performances, he has the most in-depth discussions with actors. My take is that Tully is the essence of youth and freedom. She’s also a bit mysterious. Mackenzie did an amazing job conveying all of that. It’s a complicated role for sure. written by Diablo Cody directed by Jason Reitman
An Interview with Writer Diablo Cody Film Guide: This is your third collaboration with Jason Reitman. What is it about his direction style that lends itself to work so well with your stories? Diablo Cody: Jason is an incredible writer in his own right. He could just direct his own scripts, so I’m honored when he chooses to direct one of mine. Storytelling comes naturally to him, and we’re both drawn to small, human, intimate moments in life. We have similar tastes, and we’ve also kind of grown up together—I think we’re going into our 13th year of friendship and collaboration, so that really creates a shorthand. FG: In the movie Tully is a “night nanny”. We've heard of babysitters and au pairs, but can you explain exactly what a “night nanny”is? DC: I first heard of the “night nanny” concept when I moved to L.A. a decade ago, while talking to an affluent housewife at a cocktail party. Basically, a night nanny is a person who cares for a newborn overnight, so the inexperienced parents can sleep. Typically, she or he arrives in the evening and leaves in the morning. Night nannies can cost up to $10,000 per month, which is crazy, but it’s a pretty common arrangement in places like Beverly Hills. It blew my mind to hear about this because I’m from the Midwest where people feed their own babies at 2 a.m.!

FG: Marlo is a very complex character who goes through emotional and physical changes. When you were writing the character, did you have Charlize in mind? DC: Both Jason and I were eager to work with Charlize again after doing Young Adult in 2011. I never presume actors are going to be interested in material; that’s a good way to get your heart broken as a writer! And I typically try not to write with specific people in mind. But it was impossible not to think of Charlize. She is such a courageous actor, a literal shape-shifter and so warm and brilliant. I can’t think of anyone else who does exactly what she does. She is one of a kind. FG: Before signing on, was Charlize fully aware of the physical and emotional requirements of becoming Marlo? Did she portray the tone that you and Jason envisioned? DC: I think there was a level of trust there because of our prior collaboration. Charlize was completely game and willing to go as far as we needed to bring the character to life. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way she played this role. She took it beyond what I dreamed of when I was writing it. FG: Disconnection of self seems to be an underlying theme as we watch the film’s trailer. Was there any moment in the script you wrote that really helped define the atmosphere for Charlize? DC: I think everyone was affected by the montage where we see how difficult it is to care for a newborn without any help and without adequate rest. There were real babies on set, and Jason shot those
scenes with such painstaking attention to detail. It was not a romantic depiction of motherhood at all, and I think that really helped set the tone. I also wrote a fantasy mermaid sequence to show that Marlo is figuratively underwater due to depression and sleep deprivation. I hope that was a good reference point for both Charlize and Mackenzie. FG: Did writing this script help you examine motherhood from a distinct perspective? DC: Writing this script was like therapy for me. It’s not autobiographical—I have a completely different marriage and lifestyle than Marlo—but I can relate to the anxiety and shame that Marlo feels as a mother. There is this belief in society that motherhood transforms women into saints overnight, or at least it ought to. And I still feel like the same flawed, selfish and impulsive person I was before I had my kids. I don’t relate to the moms I see who are super engaged with their kids 24/7 and make everything into some chirpy “teaching moment.” My kids have learned a lot of swear words from me. FG: How do you hope this film connects to mothers and fathers who are identifying their roles as parents?
DC: Oh, the phone thing definitely has happened to me. In fact, my kids’ nanny confessed after she saw the trailer that she’s guilty as well! A related “new world” moment we deal with as parents is the whole screen-time issue. It’s so easy to hand your kid an iPad when you’re tired, but then you think to yourself “Am I destroying this child’s neural pathways?” I will say, though, that iPads are the greatest distraction ever on long plane rides. Totally worth the brain damage; I’m not even kidding. FG: From your own experiences, what have you found is the magic behind being a parent? DC: Different stages bring different magic. There is something so beautiful and transformative about nurturing a small, helpless infant, but it’s also really great to go out for dinner with my eldest son and talk about what’s going on in the world. It’s all tinged with melancholy because time goes so quickly, but that ephemeral quality is also what makes it so precious and good. Opens in theatres on April 28, 2018.
DC: I hope parents leave this film feeling seen, understood and possibly even better about themselves. We’re all human beings. We’re hopefully doing the best we can for our children, but it’s also okay to want to run away sometimes. I don’t see a lot of depictions of special-needs kids onscreen. Marlo’s son is dealing with some sensory issues and has problems at school. That was important to me because it’s a common thing that can truly complicate family life. I hope moms and dads who are going through that will see the movie and feel understood. FG: In the trailer, we see a montage of an exhausted Marlo (Charlize) that ends with a very new-world moment in which she drops her phone on her child. Do you have any related stories from your own experiences?

S
et in Jersey at the Channel Islands in the United Kingdom. Moll Huntford is a young 27-year-old woman who has yet to begin her life. Trapped by a controlling family, who has kept her on a tight leash since she was involved in a violent incident as a teenager, Moll still lives at home. Presumably to be taking care of her aging father, Moll is really there so her domineering mother Hillary can keep a watchful eye on her. Moll runs away from her own birthday party and meets Pascal, a mysterious outsider, who stands in complete contrast to everything she has ever known. Captivated by his strange charm, they begin a passionate love affair that allows her to breathe for the first time in her life.
However, when the body of a young girl is found on the island—the fourth victim of a sexually-motivated serial killer—Pascal falls under the suspicion of Moll's family and the community-at-large. Moll is faced with a decision—does she fall in line with her mother's wishes and end the relationship? Or does she defend the man she loves and break free from the hold her family has over her? Moll chooses to stand with Pascal and defend him against her family, the community and the police. But when suspicion moves away from him, she is left with lingering doubts, both about him and about her own underlying motivations. Isolated and afraid, Moll has to face her own past to discover who she truly is and what she is capable of doing.
