Beverley’s first release in 10 years, having seen her three daughters grow up, proves that this hugely successful singersongwriter is right back at the top of her game on her own record label – not only echoing the multimillion selling ‘Promise Me’ (was that really released as far back
as 1991?) but going on to explore new moods and textures in song, responding soulfully to her breast cancer scare of six years ago. All together now: “Promise me you’ll wait for me / I need to know you feel the same way too…”.

The new album ‘I Look To You’ is Whitters’ first studio number one since 1987. Hallelujah. Five gold and five silver albums prove that our own

FRIDAY 9 ApRIl In October 1974, Killer Queen hit No 2 in the UK charts and the legend was born. At the same time, Magic formed, a harmony group performing covers of The Beach Boys, Four Seasons & ELO. It wasn’t long before they introduced the music of Freddie Mercury & Queen into their repertoire, performing Bohemian Rhapsody live in their stage show just as it reached No.1 in the U.K. charts. Magic, during their career, continued to perform many Queen covers in their stage show, including Killer Queen, A Kind of Magic, and, of course, the anthem Bohemian Rhapsody. Magic attracted more and more Queen fans to their shows and popular demand brought about an increase of Queen material into their stage performance. Since 1993, Magic have dedicated a full concert to the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen. There is no attempt to emulate Queen visually in their concert, but rather to celebrate the music of one of the greatest bands of all time by performing it superbly, live, and better than
anyone else, with the exception, perhaps, of the originals, Queen themselves! Magic have augmented their usual five piece line up with the addition of Dave Chapman, a sensational keyboard player, who reproduces the complex orchestral sounds of the ELO repertoire. Magic A Kind of Queen . If you’ve already been to a Magic Concert, then you’ll know. If you haven’t, do yourself a favour, come along, join their ever growing fans and enjoy Magic’s remarkable talents, bringing to you live Queen’s greatest hits as no other group can. IROn Man 2 Reuniting director Jon Favreau and Oscar nominee Robert downey Jr. In “Iron Man 2”, the world is aware that billionaire inventor tony Stark (Robert downey Jr.) is the armored Super hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James “Rhodey” Rhodes (don Cheadle) at his side, tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces.

Using a sole technology developed in Germany, the Wollaston based Griggs company designed its first boot, the 1461 (named after the date it was first made), as a work shoe. The exhibition chronicles how the boot went on to play a role in key fashion and music movements over the past 50 years, establishing itself as a cult item of footwear. A selection of footwear and archive material from the museum’s own collection will be brought out to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr Martens. Artefacts from Dr Martens own archive will also be showcased in an exhibition that explores the evolution of the boot’s design as well as its impact on fashion and popular culture. The infamous DM stilt boots, worn by Elton John in the film Tommy will be redisplayed as part of the exhibition and from 1 April a documentary commissioned by the Dr Martens company will be playing in the museum’s cinema area. Drawing by Barbara Hepworth Runs until 11 june The Rugby Collection will once again be on show this spring to celebrate two special anniversaries. The exhibition of important works from the nationally known Rugby Collection of 20th century and contemporary British art will celebrate Rugby Art Gallery & Museum’s tenth anniversary and the Contemporary Art Society’s 100th anniversary year. The exhibition will focus on gifted works given by the society to the gallery over the years. The show will also include a sculptural piece by Barbara Hepworth, on loan from the Arts Council Collection, and two sculptural works by artist Judith Cowan, on loan from the artist. Rugby Art Gallery & Museum’s Rugby Collection includes works by Bridget Riley, Stanley Spencer, John Keane and AK Dolven. The collection was established in 1946 and now holds more than 170 significant paintings, drawings, prints and video works. A selection of the works goes on show every
spring at Rugby Art Gallery & Museum for an extended period. Both Barbara Hepworth and Judith Cowan are also represented in the Rugby Collection with drawing works. It will be the first time that the gallery has shown the artists’ sculptures alongside their drawings, providing a rare opportunity to contextualise the collection’s works. Councillor Neil Campbell, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for Culture, said: “Rugby is very proud of its British art collection and the annual exhibition is always eagerly awaited – it’s a pleasure to see so many great works on show in the town and in one space.” The exhibition runs from 16 March to 11 June, and admission is free.

The preview evening will be on Tuesday 16 March, 6.30-8pm. For further information, contact Rugby Art Gallery & Museum on (01788) 533 201 or ragm@ rugby.gov.uk. Alternatively, visit www.ragm.org.uk/exhibitions

This year’s Dancing on Ice Tour comes to the LG Arena, Birmingham 30 April – 3 May and the tour has a fantastic line up of contestants including Inbetweeners star Emily Atack, 2Point4 Children actress Clare Buckfield, Coronation Street’s Gaynor Faye, ex-Hollyoaks actor Chris Fountain, Boyzone’s Mikey Graham, ex-Footballers’ Wives actor Gary Lucy, X factor star Ray Quinn and Emmerdale’s Hayley Tamaddon who is still the bookies favourite to win the show. Christopher Biggins and Kyran Bracken also join the line-up this year as judges. They will sit on the panel alongside judges Karen Barber and Nicky Slater from the hit ITV1 series. The Tour kicks off in Sheffield and will travel around the country to Newcastle, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham and Belfast, treating audiences to specially choreographed routines by skating legends Torvill & Dean. The format of the tour is the same as previous years and as in the hit ITV1 show, the audience will be able to use their mobile phone to text vote for their favourite dancing couple. The votes will then
be added to the scores from the Judges to decide the winner. Once the votes have been counted, the winning celebrity will join their skating partner to perform a magical finale. As with the previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity; more than £80,000 has been raised to date. The first ever live show took place in Birmingham on 7th April 2007 following record ratings for the ITV1 show. Since then the Dancing on Ice Tour has performed to over 800,000 people. Celeb-

B[XST c^ cWT C^_ Virtuoso trombonist Marcus Reynolds is now in high demand, but the locally based big band leader’s career has been an astonishing rollercoaster… It’s difficult to know where to start with Marcus Reynolds, the man who Glenn Miller’s own slide man Paul Tanner called ‘one of the finest trombonists I’ve ever heard’, and who now seems to have more jobs on the go than there are days of the week. No sooner has he begun to tell the story of the forthcoming ‘May Day May Day’ Help For Heroes charity dance at Northamptonshire’s Sywell Aerodrome, detailing three swinging hours of entertainment with his Silver Wings Swing Orchestra, than it emerges that Marcus himself “also once served in the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment, who are currently serving in Helmand province where sadly, many of the latest casualties have been.” Marcus isn’t merely the musical director of the one swing orchestra, but three others as well. He’s a top-selling recording star, his albums of super-smooth, amazingly controlled solo trombone delighting easylistening audiences the world over. He’s a lecturer in brass tuition and embouchure (brass instrument mouth-muscles). Plus “I recently became a signed artiste to Michael Rath trombones, and they’ve invited me to work on a prototype trombone which I hope to take to the States having been invited to perform at the Glenn Miller Festival again this year…”having been honoured to play Glenn Miller’s original trombone while playing in Clarinda Iowa with Bill Baker’s Big Band last year...” However, just as Marcus’s unexpected revelation of his Army days hinted, here is a man with a life story as every bit as unpredictable as his current working week. And it has been a real rollercoaster. For ten years ago, at the very top of his game, Marcus fell off the back of an unguarded 12-foot stage, and landed

Marcus playing Glenn Miller’s original trombone in America with the Bill Baker Big Band trombone first – devastatingly, with the instrument still in his mouth. Marcus underwent reconstructive surgery to his lips, but fell from being one of the top players to suddenly unable to produce a note. As his memory and embouchure were both affected, he had to pick himself up mentally and physically and learn the instrument again from scratch. After being used to the life of an orchestra conductor, a West End stalwart and session player, it took Marcus four years of playing as a street musician to get back to a position where he’s once again a great player – though he wouldn’t say so himself, as he’s incredibly modest about his skill and personal achievement. Having finally decided where to begin – with Marcus’s band-leading, solo-sliding status with the Rutland Big Band and Brass Wind & Fire Big Band, not to mention the stage show ‘When Frankie Met Robbie’ – it’s very strange when the showbiz conversation goes… “You don’t need to go to London to hear the sound of a big band. There are only ten players in the ‘Rat Pack’ show band, and we play with 17…” …is cut with asides such as: “I met [Jamiacan ska trombone legend] Rico Rodriguez when I was playing outside M&S in Kettering...”
It was busking on the shopping-arcade bridge in Harborough that led by chance to Marcus meeting up with his now music manager Anne Wilson, who is responsible for giving him the self-belief to go out and wow again, not just as a stage act but as a trombonist/big band for hire at everything from glitzy balls to glamorous garden parties or any other special event. “I am passionate about bringing the sound of the big band to the public,” Marcus has the final word. “At the moment, with Michael

Bottle Kicking and Hare Pie Scramble EASTER MONDAY - 5 APRil The proceedings start with the parading of a giant hare pie. Hallaton’s vicar emerges from church and blesses the pie. Great greasy handfuls of it are thrown into the hungry scrambling crowd. After that, things get even sillier... The Bottle Kicking contest between Hallaton and nearby Medbourne can commence. Confusingly, this involves neither bottles nor kicking. Instead the two village teams face each other at Hare Pie Bank and fight over three small beer barrels, which have been decked in ribbons. The casks are released in turn, and the opposing teams attempt to roll or carry them to their village boundary. The scrum is rules-free and notoriously
bloodthirsty. The whole event can last for hours, with the both teams sharing the beer contained within the final cask. Bottle Kicking is recorded as early as 1770, but its origin is thought to be much older. It is believed to be linked to the sacrifice of the hare in the Dark Age worship of the goddess Eastre. In 1790, the rector tried to ban the event because of its pagan origins — the next day graffiti appeared on the vicarage wall: “No pie, no parson.” Unable to beat them, the church joined them.

Our journey together with Matthew has evolved and today, we understand each other’s minds and music” Amaan Ali Khan Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan can trace their musical heritage back five generations and continue the family tradition of playing the sarod – a popular sitar-like North Indian stringed instrument – as learnt from their father, legendary musician Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. cellist Matt Considine with Josh Ford as visual editor. MI21 is a compact, powerful and sensual take on Mehboob Khan’s Hindi masterpiece - a hugely important film in South Asian cinema, known for it’s iconic imagery and powerful storyline: the common shorthand is to reference it as India’s ‘Gone with the wind’. “A powerful and moving glimpse of a challenging, unwieldy masterpiece” The Guardian, review of MI21 Originally lasting 163 minutes, Mother India charts the story of Radha, an inspiring villager who raises her two small sons on her own after her husband (Raj Kumar) is maimed in an accident. Themes of poverty, single parenting, community stigma, lack of education or opportunities and disempowerment are all framed by a contemporary electronic and strings based score, written by turntablist DJ Tigerstyle. Completing the evening is a conversation between audience and artists led by Indy Hunjan of producers Kalaphool which will take place in the auditorium. “Mother India is incredible. 1[^RZWTPSTS The legendary Blockheads are back on tour, so Leon Gray from WOW caught up with keyboard player and guitarist Chaz Jankel – the man who wrote the unique music to accompany Ian Dury’s insightful and subversive lyrics.
F>F So you’re back on the road again this year Chaz. Touring has kept you firmly in the limelight. 270I Doing lots of gigs and playing live is part and parcel of being in a band, and it’s a wonderful feeling. It’s one of the two greatest moments of being a musician, that and writing songs, when the music and lyrics come together. F>F But last year’s biopic about Ian Dury, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, must have helped to raise the band’s profile, too. 270I Yes, it’s a weird one hearing that you’re up for an award (Chaz was nominated for a Bafta for the movie soundtrack). The ceremony felt like I was back at school, waiting for exam results. And then when they announce you’ve lost, the camera focuses on you for ages… waiting for you to crack. F>F There’s a soundtrack to accompany the film, right? How did you get along with Andy Serkis, the actor who played Ian? 270I Andy re-recorded all the vocals

for the film, and he did a fantastic job. But the soundtrack is essentially all original material with Ian – I wouldn’t endorse an album of re-recordings. Several artists, including Cerys Matthews, Paul McCartney, and Robbie Williams, recorded Brand New Boots and Panties as a tribute to Ian’s life. It was an interesting idea, and half the money went to a cancer charity, but there wasn’t enough incentive for the record company to promote it. F>F What about the album of new material, Staring Down the Barrel? It’s been fantastically well-received and surely proves that there’s life after Ian. 270I Derek (the Draw – Ian’s former bodyguard and the band’s frontman since 2002) and I wrote all the material for the new album. We wrote a hell of a lot of songs for every one song that actually works, but as I said that’s all part of the appeal of being a musician. Derek’s socially aware and writes witty lyrics – very convincing – but he’s not trying to be Ian or even try to replace him. Derek is just himself.
F>F What’s all this about an Internet campaign to get the song Spasticus Autisticus to number one? Do you know anything about it? 270I Well if you’ve seen the film you’ll know that the BBC wouldn’t play the song back in 1982 – they got the wrong message completely, Ian was trying to appeal for understanding but the Beeb thought the word was offensive and wouldn’t play the song. Well our co-manager picked up on an idea to re-release the song to commemorate ten years since Ian’s death. The campaign is trying to persuade people to buy it as a single and get it to number one in the charts. Apparently, it has gathered quite a lot of momentum on Facebook. F>F I’m not going to dwell to much on the background and history of the Blockheads – there’s a film you can watch to see it for yourself. I know you dipped in and out of the band along the way. What did you get up to? 270I When I met Ian, he was so unique and clear on his life. The music I wrote
808 */5&37*&8 with Ian was tailored for Ian, but I also wrote music not necessarily suited him. I had to find another outlet for it. I’ve done solo albums and I’ve worked with other musicians – Quincy Jones, Robbie Williams… F>F And you wrote the soundtrack to the Eighties film The Rachel Papers as well, didn’t you? 270I (Laughs) My god, yes you’re right. Actually that’s where I met my wife. I just like being busy I suppose – I don’t mind working in pop as long as someone has got something prepared – and I’ve even played in a jazz quartet. I’ve made mistakes, too, trying to cram one album full of songs of completely different styles. The record company didn’t want it, and they were right of course. You would think I’d get it right by now having spent so long on the road. F>F You’re busy on tour again soon, but what else is keeping you busy at the moment? 270I Well, I’ve got a new solo record out in a couple of months – The Submarine has Surfaced. And I’m starting to write a new Blockheads album with Derek to follow up on the last one. I’m also producing and cowriting for a Californian singer called China Soul –the daughter of David Soul (of Starsky & Hutch fame and a respected singer in his own right). She’s very sincere and serious about her music and it’s a very exciting venture. We’re doing a gig in London in a month or so and then hopefully we will have an album out later on in the year. F>F It’s the tenth anniversary of Ian’s death this year, on March 27, and the Blockheads are playing at the Lancastrian Suite in Gateshead. Will you do anything special to mark the anniversary? 270I I think we’ll put some songs in the set list that we don’t normally put in, but we’re trying to keep it low key to be honest. There was talk of big artists turning up and paying tribute to Ian, but we don’t want to make it a circus. We just like the idea of playing together as a band.

For the record, of the UK’s 21, five are in Somerset, five in East Anglia, three in Scotland and the other eight are dotted around the UK. Check for updates at www. saabbiopower.co.uk Performance is strong and
emissions are low on this Saab. The trouble is I reckon you’ll need a high mileage to recoup the extra cost of BioPower models through lower fuel bills. Fuel aside, the Saab 9-3 Sportwagon is an excellent example of how designers seamlessly integrate the estate body so the car looks like it was designed as a wagon from the outset. Saab likes to make associations with its aviation heritage and the dash layout of the 9-3 certainly has a hint of aircraft cockpit about it. It’s enveloping, with lots of
gadgets and important-looking switches. The ride is excellent and smooth over every surface without being wallowy. Build quality is good and although some of the interior plastics look a bit on the cheap and flimsy side, finding a comfortable driving position is easy thanks to outstandingly supportive seats with plenty of adjustment and a multi-position steering wheel. Also, standard with the Vector Sport trim are sportier-looking bumpers and stiffer suspension. Saab dealers are expected to emphasise the 9-3’s “userfriendly, easy to live with and operate” nature of the car against the key premium competitors – the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 as well as the mainstream Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and Honda Accord. All in all the Saab 9-3 Sportwagon, BioPower version or not, remains an intelligent and stylish buy if you want to be different.

British boxing’s next superstar could be a Leicester binman! 3FOEBMM .VOSPF IFBET UPXBSET UIF $PWFOUSZ 4LZEPNF UIJT NPOUI UP UBLF PO .FYJDBO 7JDUPS 5FSB[BT FRIDAY 23 APRIL Rendall Munroe can secure a world-title fight by beating Victor Terrazas from Mexico at the Skydome in Coventry on Friday 23 April. Munroe has already won European and Commonwealth honours and the 29 year-old is proving to be a smash hit with fight fans. He should have more than 3,000 supporters cheering him on when he battles Terrazas and his target is to be as popular as Ricky ‘The Hitman’
Hatton. Two years ago, Hatton filled the City of Manchester Stadium with more than 50,000 fans and Munroe hopes he will get the chance to win the world title and defend it at the Walkers Stadium. Munroe is a massive Leicester City fan and said: “I want as many fans as Hatton – and I’m getting there. Jimmy McCann is the captain of England’s amateur team and the smooth-boxing light-heavyweight added to his reputation with a third-round knock-out win over Tom McGrath in an international against Ireland in Birmingham recently that was watched by ring legends includ-
ing Nigel Benn. At the age of 22 and with four national titles already, McCann is one of the country’s outstanding amateur boxers – winning six of his seven international bouts - and there’s every chance he could be heading to the 2012 London Olympics. He has already shared a ring with an Olympic champion. Jimmy sparred James DeGale before the 2008 Beijing
Olympics and watched every punch on television as the Londoner went on to strike middleweight gold before turning professional with top promoter Frank Warren. McCann’s path to boxing glory started when he put on a pair of boxing gloves when he was just six years old – “I’m a traveller and we learn how to defend ourselves he says – and has gone on to have more
than 60 amateur bouts. Along with younger brother Patsy, himself a three times national champion and bronze medallist at last year’s European Youth championships, he boxes for Kettering School of Boxing and when they are not at the gym, they are often spotted pounding the same Market Harborough streets that Gardner and Aldridge would run along all those years ago..

Tracy and Elaine experience a personal training session with corrective exercise and fat loss specialist Nicky Sehgal. A comment from a friend was “Ooh, he’s good!. We were about to find out exactly what “Ooh meant! Nicky also runs boot camps – about 20 people attend for 3 days a week for one month for 45 minute hard workout sessions. The first part of any new clients program is dedicated to correcting movements, posture and nutrition. Nicky has a varied

eing a sunny day we had a certain spring in our step. Feeling full of confidence, after all we have tried out a few fitness programs this year! As we make our way to Archway House, it’s at this point our nerves kick in! Once in Nicky’s studio, we answered a few basic questions. Exercise for Tracy is netball training and chat! Meanwhile Elaine chooses cycling which due to the weather mostly takes place in her living room! We discussed our goals before Nicky assessed our fitness abilities. We started with some squats, bottom out (very crucial), bend at the knees as if about to sit down, up again and repeat – nice and slowly. Tracy’s Netball injuries rewarded her with a big bouncy ball to lean on when squatting which she found to make light relief of a simple exercise that would normally cause discomfort - what a breakthrough! We then moved on to do some serious press ups. Great upper body strengthener and again it gave Nicky an idea of our

clientele, with mixed abilities and requirements. If a certain exercise is beyond your ability (maybe injury/health related) then Nicky is happily on hand to show you a sensible alternative. This has been a real wake up call for us, and for anyone indecisive about what action to take to get fit and lose fat, we would strongly recommend booking an assessment session with Nicky (Ooh... he is good!) Having been reminded of the importance of nutrition we chose to visit Farndon Fields Farm Shop to stock up on some healthy produce (all locally grown) while taking full advantage of the cafe for refreshments. capabilities and where our bodies needed training to manage these new and ‘foreign’ moves. This area uncovered more areas that needed correcting if we choose to take the training seriously. A training program lasts between 6-12 weeks with 1–3 45 minute training sessions per week. Workouts may be anything from 8 mins to 45 mins.
