It is not uncommon for the Olympic flame to be accidentally or deliberately extinguished during the course of the relay. To guard against this eventuality, multiple copies of the flame are transported with the relay or maintained in backup locations. When a torch goes out, it is re-lit (or another torch is lit) from one of the backup sources. Therefore, the fires contained in the torches and Olympic cauldrons all trace a common lineage back to the same Olympia lighting ceremony.

UNTIL SUNDAy 8Th JULy The award winning musical comedy ‘Me And My Girl’ is set in the 1930’s when the Earl of Hareford has died leaving no apparent heir. of Hareford Hall. The unlikely beneficiary is one Bill Snibson, a pugnacious Cockney from Lambeth! Its unforgettable songs including ‘Me and My Girl’, ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’, ‘Once You Lose Your Heart’, ‘Leaning on a Lamppost’ and of course the show stopping ‘The Lambeth Walk’, coupled with larger than life characters, energetic choreography and a wonderfully

The Masque Theatre is 80 &YQFSJFODF PQFO BJS ESBNB JO UIF BUNPTQIFSJD TVSSPVOEJOHT PG BO &MJ[BCFUIBO NBOPS IPVTF MON 23 JULy - SAT AUGUST As part of its 80th. Anniversary Northampton’s Masque Theatre are performing two plays for their summer season, William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Dominic Cooke’s RSC script of the Arabian Nights both of which are being performed in the open-air courtyard of Abington Park Museum, Northampton. The Tempest is the most lyrical and fascinating of Shakespeare’s late comedies. Prospero, long exiled from Italy with his daughter Miranda, seeks to sue his magical powers to defeat his former enemies who are shipwrecked on ‘his’ island. Eventually, having proved merciful, he divests

himself of that magic, his ‘art’ and prepares to return to his Dukedom. The Tempest has often been regarded as Shakespeare’s ‘farewell’ to the stage. Prospero’s world is created by Masque Theatre in full period costume in the atmospheric setting of the courtyard. The second week of the season sees Arabian Nights in performance and the world of magical storytelling. It is the wedding night of King Shahrayar. By morning the new Queen Sharazad is to be put to death, like a thousand young brides before her. She has one gift that could save her‌the gift of storytelling. Can the young Queen transport the

vengeful King to the mystical land of Ali Baba, Es-Sinbad the sailor and Princess Parizade? Will her silver-tongued storytelling save her life? In Arabian Nights Masque Theatre use a host of puppets, costumes and music to weave this magical tale. Performances are: THE TEMPEST Monday 23 – Saturday 28 July. 7.30pm. ARABIAN NIGHTS Monday 30 July – Saturday 4 August. 7.30pm. Tickets are only available on the door each night from 7pm. £10 adult, £8 concession, £5 child and £25 family ticket (2 adult/2 child). Once again, the disruptive power of Dionysus is captured in Hedda Gabler, within the heart of one of the most compelling women ever portrayed in literature. Stifled by the boredom of her comfortable existence and claustrophobic marriage, Hedda (Emma Hamilton, best known as Jayne Seymour in TV’s The Tudors) sets out on a destructive path that pits her lust for drama and beauty against the social conventions of the day.

?a^Q[T\ B^[eTS As the Sound Of Music will soon be heard in South Leicestershire’s stunning Kilworth House Theatre, WOW’s Derek Hammond gets the chance to talk to the show’s leading lady, Helena Blackman.

B

ix years ago the nation watched each week as ten unknown actresses battled to become the next Maria in the BBC Talent show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria. Among those was a young Helena Blackman who came second, and is soon to be starring in the role at Kilworth House Theatre. F>F The role of Maria in the Sound of Music must surely be the one that’s closest to you heart? But (having studied your CV!), is it true that you’ve never appeared in the full production before!? 71 Maria will certainly be an emotional part for me to play and probably be very bitter sweet. This is the first production of it that I have been in and it’s lovely that this has come along now. I feel much more accomplished as a performer and feel this will only aid the part I’ll be playing. F>F It’s been six years now since you came to the nation’s attention in ‘How Do You Solve...’, since which time your career has gone from strength to strength. Your long touring run as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific must have been a thrilling highlight, though in the WOW region you’re remembered as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz... 71 Yes it was lovely to do an R&H role and for such a long time. I really enjoyed making my way around the country and performing for different types of people and

10

WOW July 2012

being able to meet those people who voted for me. I’m also glad I got to play Dorothy, it’s a young part and a mammoth one and there is only a small window of opportunity to play this role before you become too knowing as an actress. F>F Looking back on ‘How Do You Solve’, your route to future success and stardom seemed to be hanging by a thread at several points. But Andrew Lloyd-Webber always came dashing to your rescue... 71 Yes he was very good to me, hopefully because he believed in me as a performer and looked at the bigger picture beyond every Saturday night on the show. I’m thrilled I got to experience the whole process from beginning to end and this was due to him. F>F After graduating from the famous drama school, the Guildford School of Acting, your work carried you all over the world, to

Europe, Canada, Barbados, even Japan. What are your stand out memories from this globe-trotting period? 71 There I so many, I feel so privileged and never thought about how this profession would enable me to travel. Funnily enough I think the most prolific thing was performing at The Royal Albert Hall in London, it’s such a famous concert hall that so many amazing people have performed on. F>F And one further step back in time. Is it true that you were treading - or possibly toddling - the boards at an unusually early age? When did you land your first lead role? 71 Yes, I was always performing and had dance lessons from about 2. My first lead role was in my school show when I was 12 and I played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. F>F Who were your role models and he-

exciting thing about what I do...you always evolve and grow.

F>F What would you do if you were invisible for a day?

71 I loved Kylie Minogue and wanted desperately to be a pop star. I also went through a Karen Carpenter faze. I liked musical theatre but it was only when I was about 10 that I decided it was something I wanted to do by bringing my singing and acting loves together, musical theatre seemed the best route to ensure I could continue doing both disciplines. These days I don’t really know if I have any role models, I certainly appreciate all artists and always see the benefit of their work, their talent, drive and charisma that enhances them as performers.

F>F And also last year you were nominated for an Off West End award...

71 That’s a hard one, but I don’t think I would like it and would feel very lonely and isolated.

71 Yes, this is my second nomination. I was nominated for a TMA award for my role in South Pacific. It’s lovely to be thought of and to have my work appreciated when you’re up against such talent.

It must have been a great thrill to meet Stephen Sondheim when you were starring in Saturday Night in the West End? Who would you rate as your own favourite writers/singers/actors that you’ve worked with? 71 There are SO many, there is some great talent out there. I love Stiles & Drewe who wrote Mary Poppins and would love to work with them again. There is a new writer, Steven Luke Walker who is fantastic also, I’m about to perform in a concert version of his new musical (based on Little Women) at the Playhouse theatre in Sunday 24th June. F>F Last year you released your debut album, The Sound of Rodgers & Hammerstein. Tell us a little about your choice of material and favourite selections. 71 The wealth of R&H material is incredible and even now I wonder if we should have made different decisions with the track list. I’m very proud of the album and the amazing people that worked on it. It was really tough making choices about how to sing and perform the songs out of context of the shows. As my voice keeps changing, so will the way I sing and interpret the material but that’s the

And thereby hangs a tale 5PVSJOH FYIJCJUJPO DPNFT UP /PSUIBNQUPO 9 June to 5 August A touring exhibition that explores the mystery of where William shakespeare married Anne Hathaway is to open at Abington Park Museum in northampton on 8 June. Five churches lay claim to the wedding and ‘And thereby hangs a tale’ looks at the evidence for and against each claim. the churches cited as contenders for the wedding are st Martin’s Church in Worcester, temple grafton Church in Warwickshire, All saints’ Chapel in Luddington, Holy trinity in stratford and All saint’s Church in Billesley. the evidence for each claim has been pieced together by the Churches Conservation trust, which has organised the exhibition. Visitors will be invited to sort through historical fact from fiction before drawing their own conclusions.

the exhibition was launched at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage near stratford last september before beginning a tour of other heritage sites in the region. Its Abington Park Museum venue in northampton is a fitting setting for the exhibition as it was once home to shakespeare’s

granddaughter elizabeth. In 1649 elizabeth married John Bernard of Abington at All saints’ church in the parish of Billesley before moving to the 15th century manor which now houses the museum. Could it be that elizabeth chose the Billesley church because her grandparents married there?

Visit the exhibition to find out. Jo Cross of the Churches Conservation trust said: “We chose Abington Park Museum because of its connection with shakespeare. As the home of his granddaughter elizabeth Bernard it seems entirely fitting for the tour to end here. Costumes from the Royal shakespeare Company’s 2000 production of Romeo and Juliet, which starred David tennant, as well as others from productions of A Midsummer night’s Dream and Anthony and Cleopatra will be showing alongside the exhibition. ‘And thereby hangs a tale’ is at AbingtOn PArk MuseuM from 8th June - 26th August . opening times are thursday to sunday and bank holiday Mondays 1pm to 5pm. Admission is free.

Osho me the way to Edinburgh 57 DPNJDT USZ PVU OFX TFUT QSF GFTU THURSDAY 26 JULY There’s nothing wildly original in Andi Osho’s sassy deconstruction of our mating mores, the humour of recognition working on more than one level – first because you recognise the situation described, for example waking up with someone you don’t know / wondering about people’s privates / and so on... and once again because you’re fairly certain you’ve heard the same joke on telly before. But gosh knows, Osho is a winning character, and pulls it all off quite joyously. Meanwhile jazzy riffer Charlie Baker is much more one for the critics: “a superior take on the modern showman according to the Guardian. His 2009 debut Edinburgh show

To make a filling dish that will serve as a tasty lunch or dinner, Canned Food UK’s Ham ‘n’ Eggs can serve a tent of two, and takes only 15 minutes to prepare and cook. It uses just four key ingredients - including two cans - meaning you won’t be taking up too much valuable space in your backpack! To spice up your weekend, Chilli

You’ll be the envy of the campsite with Canned Food UK’s Vegetarian Bean Chilli, which is the perfect option for staying healthy whilst away. What’s more, it contains four of your 5-A-DAY and takes just 20 minutes to prepare and cook.
