HOW Did It Spread? Tang Dynasty During the Tang Dynasty, there were several groups of traders, ambassadors and soldiers who were migrating to China from Arabia. Most of them arrived via the route that connected China and Western Asia; the world renowned Silk Road – a land route that traverses from Xi’an through middle Asia to Persia and Tazi. Song Dynasty During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the shipping trade in China flourished and out of all the foreign countries that traded with the Song Empire, the Arabs formed the majority. Many historians inferred that there were more Muslims during the Song Dynasty than in the Tang Dynasty. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, several mosques were also built in China. For example, the Guangzhou Huaisheng mosque was built since the Tang Dynasty, the Shengyou mosque in Quanzhou was built in 1009-1010, and the Yangzhou mosque was built in the Song Dynasty (1275). Yuan Dynasty It was recorded that Islam enjoyed the peak of its popularity during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), where authorities in China held a permissive attitude towards
Islam, imperial rulers protected Muslims and during this time, many people started converting to Islam. From Ming and Qing Dynasties onwards During the Ming Dynasty, Huihui was eventually established as an ethnic group. This group of people communicated in Han language but adopted Arab and Persian as their religious languages. As many Huihui could not read original Islam texts written in Arab and Persian, Chinese translations of these texts began to emerge. This was how Islam and traditional Chinese culture was fused together. WHAT Are The Functions Of A Mosque? Many might already know that a mosque is where Muslims gather together to pray. It is also a place where major ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals take place. In China, many Muslims often hold weddings in mosques, and when Muslims pass away, the mosque will provide them with facilities to cleanse the corpse and host the funeral rituals. Since the Ming Dynasty, the mosques in China also featured Scripture teaching halls where students were enrolled. The Imam would also impart Islamic knowledge to them. Students were required to eat, live and study in the mosque.
