Think tribal, go global From the earliest times, the travellers of old who crossed hundreds of miles over land and water as regularly as the sun rose were significant contributors to the dissemination of cultures and societal traits. These nomads formed tribes that learnt much about the characteristics of each city or town they visited, and as they travelled, they shed nuances of their influences by way of interpersonal communication and interactions. In time, new civilisations were created as these people settled in particular places and gave form to their own social systems and cultural personalities. Their migratory patterns were the first seeds of globalisation as we know it today. Aided by the wings of technology – and frequent flyer miles – the traveller of new is called a globetrotter, and he or she flies on the golden spurs of consumerism and commercialism. But a schism exists between this modern need to interconnect and transcend borders and the biological need to remain as part of a tribe. Travelling creates a dissonance that may be temporal, but then our psyche kicks in and we gravitate towards those with whom we have an affiliation, be it cultural, educational, social, and so on. This sense of groupism serves us well as we jet set and soar towards goals. We form bonds with those we deal with in the business community, wherever in the world they may be. Cities, too, that have preserved their sense of ethnocentrism, albeit with a healthy perspective, have succeeded in endearing themselves to the world. The result is a thriving social system, a robust economy, world-class advancement in science and technology, and an exuberant tourism trade. In this issue, we look at four cities that appeal to us in very distinctive ways: Tokyo (pg 30), Seoul (pg 36), Melbourne (pg 58) and France (pg 94). In our pursuit of achievements and a higher quality of living, mankind’s taste for refinement and luxury becomes an insatiable desire. We feed you with decadent recommendations on the luxe and latest hotels (pg 42) to stay at, the most exhilarating sport (pg 52) you can possibly enjoy, the most worthy gadgets (pg 92) to get, and of course the looks (pg 100) that will make you feel like a million bucks. To top that, what could be more indulgent than a shopping trip to Paris (pg 94)? I end my soliloquy with this thought by Shakespeare: “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.” Therefore, fly on, thrive on and read on.

Expansion of East Asia services Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways expands its network in Greater China with the commencement of codeshare services to Hong Kong in February this year. Codeshare partner Air Seychelles operates the thrice-weekly Abu Dhabi-Hong Kong route. The new flight service provides Hong Kong passengers with seamless connectivity in Abu Dhabi. Key destinations include Gulf Cooperation Council states such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia as well as Europe – which includes the UK, France, Germany and Ireland.

Melbourne flights get increased load capacity Etihad Airways Daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Melbourne see an increase of 252 seats per week this year, making it a jump of 12.3 per cent. The increased capacity will be met by new three-class 328-seat Boeing 777s. Announcing the move was James Hogan, President and CEO of Etihad Airways, who highlighted that Melbourne is one of the bestperforming routes in its global network and

has the highest passenger load factor in its three Australian destinations. The Boeing 777 offers eight seats in Diamond First Class, 40 seats in Pearl Business Class and 280 seats in Coral Economy Class. Flightpath Cleared It’s all systems go at Narita International Airport as it gears up for infrastructure expansion plans and increased passenger movements following a shaky post-nuclear 2011. anked 13th by Airport Council International, Narita International Airport has recently added new destinations such as Yangon, San Diego and San Jose to its stable and is currently looking at boosting capacity for more flights. Responding to the landscape of increased competition in Asian regional hubs, Narita has opened up 10 lots to park more planes as well as a new strip that allows access to an existing runway. This effectively increases flights by 20,000 to 270,000 annually. “We are currently driving forward with airport capacity expansion…capacity was expanded to 250,000 in March 2012 after installing additional aircraft stands and other facilities. Through further facility development, we are planning to expand our capacity to 270,000 movements a year by the end of March 2013 and then to 300,000 within fiscal 2014 at the earliest,” says Makoto Natsume, President & CEO of Narita International Airport. The airport has also added a dedicated facility to accommodate the increased use of corporate and private jets. “The Business Aviation Terminal – Premier Gate was opened in March 2012 as a key business tool for global executives,” Natsume shares. This facility allows users to go through airport procedures swiftly and in privacy as the terminal is fully equipped with CIQ facilities. “We will continue to strive to become an attractive airport with advantages trusted and preferred by travellers,” Natsume concludes.

4 to 6 hours: Narita City Just 10 minutes by train from the airport, Narita is worth a visit to check out its temples, shrines and museums as well as recreational facilities such as a shopping mall. 3

See Narita-san Shinshoji Temple An attraction with over 1,000 years of history, Narita-san Shinshoji has a variety of temple buildings as well as a traditional Japanese garden that will enthrall history buffs and nature lovers alike. Hop onto the Keisei Main Line Limited Express from either Terminal 1 or 2 and take a 20min ride to Keisei-Narita station. From there, it’s a 20min walk to the temple.

Omotesando Road On the way to the temple from Keisei-Narita station, this stretch of road provides many distractions in the form of unique souvenir shops and traditional restaurants. It is a colourful street bustling with activity and festivity.

Shop Aeon Narita For shopaholics, it doesn’t get any easier; a retro-style shuttle bus takes passengers from the airport to the mall. Costs ¥200 per adult. The mall features over 150 shops ranging from fashion to fresh foods and home improvement. There are numerous fashion boutiques and restaurants to tempt visitors to while away those hours. Other highlights include a large supermarket, Muji and a 100 Yen shop.

There are various tours on this open-topped bus; you will be brought around to see the Imperial Palace, the famous shopping district of Ginza, Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Skytree, just to name a few. Tokyo Imperial Palace East Garden A must-see during the March and April cherry blossom season, the East Gardens is part of the Tokyo Palace and is open to the public with no admission fee. There are several entrances to the gardens but it is commonly accessed via the Otemachi Gate, which is near the subway station of the same name.

Tokyo National Museum Hailed as the oldest museum in Tokyo, it houses a collection of more than 110,000 artworks, which includes 91 national treasures and more than 600 important cultural assets. Exhibits feature Japanese art and crafts as well as Asian and Egyptian artifacts. A thorough appreciation of the museum requires 3 hours, more if you wish to spend some time in the Museum Garden, which boasts over 10 species of cherry tree blossoms. Taking inspiration from rice paddy fields, inverted tiered levels flow from the hotel entrance and inwards to the reception’s high ceilings, where plenty of mirrors and glass enhance the sense of spaciousness and calm. Check-in passed smoothly, and I’m led down a wooden walkway, flanked by a gently flowing stream feature to the right and guests deep into their books on comfortable lounging chairs to the other.

Commanding 360 degree views of the city skyline is the 16th floor Orchid Club Lounge, which serves champagne breakfasts, evening cocktails and all-day refreshments. A dedicated second floor offers meeting and events spaces with flexible configurations for small groups of 16 and up to 800 guests, all rooms incorporating state-of-the-art technology, controlled lighting systems and high-speed Internet access. The nature theme is continued via Bali-inspired latticework for a resort-like feel.

Profile Continuing the hotel’s profile of a friendly, spacious atmosphere, Lime features high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass windows, allowing generous pockets of light and space. Other than boasting three open kitchens to allow for an interactive dining experience, the all-day-dining destination also houses the Lime Bar where mixologists are on hand to spin out personalised creations, classic cocktails and speciality wines.

Ambience Comfortable sofas and lounge chairs in buttery-soft leather and cool linens are positioned in varying seating configurations from the large communal dining table to snug corner tables for two. The colour palette is light and clean, featuring tones of grey and cream, allowing the bustling live kitchens and colourful cuisine to take centre stage.

Food Expect a diverse selection of local and Asian favourites, mixed with international flavours. Favourites include chicken with curry leaves, Peking duck salad and tender beef cheek with red wine that’s been slow-braised for five hours. At the seafood bar/sushi counter, selections of mussels, scallops and tiger prawns were delectably fresh, where Executive Chef Vijayakant also deliberately omitted salmon sashimi in favour of tuna ceviche for a twist on tradition. Don’t miss the expertly done Thai beef salad coriander that’s comparable to Thailand’s, with a spice level that has been suitably toned down to cater to different palates. Other hot items we liked include the leek and potato soup, red grouper dugler sauce that was cooked to tender perfection and doused in creamy gravy, while guests who

like their duck and beef rib eye well-done can request chefs to fire it up a while more – since the meats are mostly done medium-rare. For desserts, Chef Vijay made sure local favourites such as kueh lapis and other Nyonya hits are included, plus a minimum of five tart varieties such as apple tarts, chocolate tarts, key lime pies and cherry clafoutis. The little pots of delicious crème brulee kept running out; while the chef’s insistence on quality products for his dishes – in this case bread and butter pudding – meant that croissants rather than normal bread were used, making it a huge hit as well.

Plates were cleared quickly and napkins were folded regularly, and the wait staff were never too far away for any query or need. Chef Vijay also makes the rounds to check on cleanliness and personally cooks at specific stations. We appreciated his enthusiasm for his craft and detail to quality food.

Profile Officially opened last December, CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La legend. Chinese believe that “chi” is the universal life force that governs the well-being and vitality of a person. CHI offers a personal sanctuary where holistic treatments, from a spectrum of massages to facials and treatments, are provided for complete relaxation of the mind and revitalisation of the body.

The Place If I have to use a noun to describe CHI, it would have to be “tranquility”. Upon entering the spa, the soft lights and music created a gentle ambience, making me feel at ease almost immediately. I was greeted by the spa manager who, with great depth of knowledge, explained the different treatments available. Thanks to her amicable attitude, I was already impressed even before my therapy had begun.

Experience I was pleasantly surprised that Linda, my appointed therapist, was standing patiently outside, wearing a gentle smile and exuding a warm friendliness that made me feel very much at ease. She led me to one of the nine treatment rooms, and took detailed notes of my preferences for the massage. I was given the CHI Retreat, which is a two-hour CHI body scrub and relaxation massage. She also suggested a Bio Mud Wrap treatment – best for blood circulation. Using salt gathered from the Himalayas, she scrubbed my skin gently, exfoliating the dead skin and rejuvenating the growth of new skin cells. Then, the salt was cleaned away and a layer of mud was spread across

my body. She told me that the Bio Mud Wrap activated dormant cells to aid circulation, and if I wanted to detoxify my body from impurities, I could choose the Marine Flora Wrap, which consisted of sea marine ingredients. The warmth of the mud on my skin was relaxing and eased my tense muscles. She wrapped me up in a thin cloth and tenderly massaged my head while the mud worked its nourishing effects. I washed off the mud in an adjacent bathroom and got ready for the next treatment – CHI Balance. “We wouldn’t really call it a massage, but a treatment that keeps the balance of your ‘ying’ and ‘yang’”, explained Linda. The 60-minute process brought me to a blissful realm where only peace and serenity existed. Accompanied by the experienced hands of the therapist and relaxing spa music, I gradually drifted off to a light slumber.

X Factor Thoroughly rejuvenated, I was then led to a relaxation lounge where individual armchairs were placed for guests who have completed their treatments. Lulled by the dim lighting, hot tea and luscious fruits, I ended my spa experience on a gentle note, but it was no less impressive than the treatment itself. Designed with lovely mahogany furniture and customised fabrics, the suite felt rich and cosy, with a soothing colour scheme of deep blue and terra cotta with copper and burgundy accents. The quality of materials is evident, as is the marble bathroom, which comes with a deep tub and L’Occitane amenities. Lulled by the gorgeous vistas and pampered by the luxurious surrounds, the king-sized bed with its plush duvet and soft pillows poses an attractive proposition, one that should be taken up after a night out discovering the charms of Bosphorus.

In fact, Melbournians celebrate food so much that they have staged the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival yearly for the past 21 years. For 17 delicious days in March, the city springs to life with food and wine-centric events. Top international and Australian chefs meet in masterclasses; restaurants offer special menus and food tours abound. For amateur foodie and serious gourmands alike, this is an event not to be missed. We catch up with several top chefs in town for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival to see what is trending in the Australian culinary scene. If you have a penchant for what’s new, trendy and tasty on the vibrant Melbourne food scene, embark on a gastronomic adventure to some of the city’s hottest dining spots. The restaurants featured are clustered in two key areas – the eastern heart of Melbourne city itself with each recommendation all less than a 500m walk apart, and then a little further afield in the former working class turned trendy design and culinary havens of Collingwood and Brunswick. In the City Cumulus Inc. Start with the most important meal of the day – breakfast! And where better than one of Melbourne’s iconic breakfast spots – Cumulus Inc. Brainchild of prolific Melbourne chef Andrew McConnell, the all-day dining eatery lends a stylishly cool vibe that is right at home in Flinders Lane, Melbourne’s art and fashion district. Cumulus has consistently won rave reviews for its food and its eggs are reputed to be the best in Melbourne. For four consecutive years running, it has been given a One Hat rating from The Age Good Food Guide, the foodie bible on where and what to eat in Melbourne.

Must-try: Go the whole hog (pun intended) and order the grilled Lyonnaise sausage with smoked hock, braised beans and a 65/65 egg. But put away your knife because this comes unexpectedly and delightfully presented with all ingredients already schmoozing cosily in a cast-iron pot with the egg wobbling daintily on top. The sausage is all cut up for you already and the hock is reduced to light silken streams of fibre. All you need is some lightly toasted bread to sop up every last bit of ham and bean combination. Fortify with a glass of organic orange juice or any of the 13 gourmet loose leaf teas available.

The Age Good Food Guide lists Chin Chin as one of the top 10 newest and hottest restaurants in town – and rightly so. The energy is lively, the pace and turnover brisk. The crowd is trendy and young with a buzz that’s not only due to the spicy kick the food offers. This energetic dive features good food that combines the flavours and textures of Asia creatively (the pedigree and origin doesn’t matter – Thai with Japanese works as well as Chinese with Malayan overtones) with the fresh produce that Australia is known for. A dripping from pressed and fermented anchovy in wooden barrels, The Grill uses colatura from the Amalfi coast. This lends a full-bodied umami flavour that is both mellow and comforting. In the suburbs Move north east and out of the compact Melbourne CBD and you hit the elegant streets of the suburbs, now home to the city’s favourite dining spots, cheek by jowl with design studios, edgy fashion and the occasional Asian produce store. Laced with stately turn-of-the-century terrace houses with their delicate ironwork and long straight leafy elm-lined avenues, this is where Melbourne’s brave new eateries cut their teeth with a crowd that is curious, sophisticated and game for anything new, fresh and interesting. Here’s where you find gems like Andrew McConnell’s ethereally named Moon Under Water and the funky mix of Asian and Australian with Huxtables by the affable Daniel Wilson.

Moon Under Water A newspaper column written more than 50 years ago by George Orwell about his favourite public house is the inspiration behind Moon Under Water, critically acclaimed chefs Andrew McConnell and Josh Murphy’s newest restaurant. Here, McConnell and Murphy recreate their signature style of laid-back intimate dining with fresh and seasonal produce

taking centre stage. As with Cumulus Inc, Moon Under Water has already made waves as Victoria’s hottest restaurant and looks likely to stay that way. Set in the historic Builders Arms Hotel which has been sensitively renewed by McConnell and partners, front of house is a lively pub. There is no a la carte menu, just a prix fixe at A$75 that changes weekly. The dim lighting with the predominant cool uncluttered white tones give the room an elegant but slightly surreal air. This is fine-dining dialled down to be accessible, friendly and relaxed – all part of the McConnell/ Murphy signature. Tellingly, the menu does not describe methods and sauces and treatment. It simply lists the ingredients in every course – green tomato, tiger prawn, fried bread and fennel, or zucchini flower with purslane, pine nuts and currants. But in the hands of Murphy and his team, the simplest of ingredients combine to form a symphony that delights the taste buds. At Moon Under Water, it’s all about subtlety in good taste – in the look, the style and the food.

Huxtable A street away on Smith Street, with no obvious signage, you’d walk right past Huxtable without realising it. Unobtrusive inside and out, Huxtable is the place to be for a night out with friends. The atmosphere is no fuss, comfortable ’80s style retro done in warm unthreatening chocolate hues. Clearly the emphasis is on the food and rightly so. True to the Asian spirit of communal dining, this is where friends and family order and share dishes. That’s also the best way to order as much of the menu as possible. Wilson, married to a Penangite from Malaysia, has strong Asian influences in his food and this shows in the eclectic menu. Must-try: The tuna tartare with the freshness of shiso and the citrusy notes of yuzu on sesame rice crackers is clearly Japanese-inspired as is the sashimi of ocean trout with finger lime, sesame ponzu and seaweed. The Aussie BBQ is given a spicy kick with Korean-style ribs – a robust version of dwaeji kalbi as good as any in Seoul. Leave room for dessert: the white chocolate pannacotta with raspberries (A$14) was textured so lightly, ever so delicately wobbly that no one felt saturated with too much.

ince the invention of the first steam locomotive nearly 200 years ago in England, “trains have shaped and parted nations, tamed the most inhospitable landscapes and helped established great empires,” says writer and train enthusiast Keith Lovegrove in his book Railway: Identity, Design and Culture. Simply put, railways have overhauled the way we live, work, play and travel – until this very day. It’s estimated that rail networks the world over transport a total of more than 45 billion people every year. And the number is only likely to grow, given the technological breakthroughs made in locomotive engineering that allow for bigger, better and faster trains. With historians, engineers and experts as our guides, we take a look at some of the world’s most impressive trains and train journeys. Covering more than 1,000km of historic track built more than 125 years ago, this luxury train service has earned the reputation as being one of the most indulgent that the land of The Mounties has to offer. Named as one of the Top 10 Train Travels in the world by National Geographic, the Rocky Mountaineer was founded by the Armstrong Group in 1990. In the last two decades, it has established itself as the largest privately owned rail company in North

America, and has brought the standards of luxury train travel in Canada to new heights. Some of the sights along the journey include the 3,956m-high Mount Robson – the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies; Hell’s Gate, the narrowest point on the Fraser River; and the Spiral Tunnels, an engineering feat that sees the train ascend 330m from 1,300m to 1,630m above sea level, all in the span of 16km. Another of its more popular journeys is the Whistler Sea to Sky Climb, a short three-hour passageway that connects you from Vancouver to the resort town of Whistler, famous for skiing and outdoor alpine adventures. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express As one of the world’s most luxurious and celebrated trains, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express – not to be confused with the original Orient Express which has ceased operation in 2009, nor the Eastern & Oriental Express that runs from Singapore to Thailand – is a train service through Europe that’s fit for royalty, literally. The brainchild of American entrepreneur James Sherwood, who bought and upgraded the original Orient Express carriages that were auctioned off in 1977, the opulent Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE) has played host to countless dignitaries, aristocrats, and famous personalities for more than three decades, including members of the British royal family. Now owned and managed by Orient-Express Hotels Ltd, the VSOE has a network that stretches over 5,000km from London to Venice, and to Istanbul, 68 Corporate Traveller

and connects 11 major cities in eight European countries. Utilising the same vintage cars that belonged to the Orient Express in the 1920s and 30s, the VSOE “offers [travellers] an experience reminiscent of the romanticism and elegance of that Art Deco era”, writes Eva Marin, conservation scientist and editor of Luxury Trains. While onboard the VSOE, passengers are pampered to the tee. “Not only do personal stewards, gourmet meals and panoramic views while you’re within the cabin ensure your ultimate relaxation, the train’s interior is also filled with fine wood detail and polished brass… and the dining cars sport French silverware and crystal aplenty,” describes Marin. More than just a vehicle of opulence, the VOSE has also become an international pop culture icon. It has inspired several books and films, including Romance On The Orient Express and Around The World in 80 Days.

Golden-Eagle Trans-Siberian Express If making the journey on the iconic 9,288km Trans-Siberian railway – the world’s longest train route – is high on your bucket list of things to do in your lifetime, then the best way to experience it is aboard the most luxurious private train in Russia. The Golden Eagle Luxury Train began plying the Moscow-to-Vladivostok passage in 2007. In a short span of six years, it has become one of the most prestigious locomotive services in the country. “With modern amenities from under-floor heating, LCD screens and DVD players in each suite, [this train] augments the traditional splendour of a rail journey across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Express,” comments Marin. Powered by a restored Russian-made locomotive built in the 1950s, the Golden Eagle carriages offer plush interiors that match the opulent royal wagons that used to ferry the Tsars and Tsarinas. There are three classes of travel available, and the most premium is the Imperial Suite – which cost US$29,995 (S$37,533) per person and comes with 120-sq-ft of space, a king-sized bed, an in-cabin lounge and a personal butler. Although the actual Trans-Siberian line measures just over 9,000km, the leisurely 15-day passage onboard the Golden Eagle covers a total distance of 11,000km. “This is because we leave the main line and travel

The Ghan (GSR, Australia) With a history that dates back to the late 1800s, The Ghan is one of the most historic and iconic railways in Australia. Listed as one of the top 10 trains in the world by National Geographic, The Ghan makes its 3,000km journey through the heart of the continent from Adelaide in the south to Alice Springs in the north, and since 2004, to Darwin. In recognition of the efforts of Afghan camel drivers who helped open up the inhospitable Australian interior in the late 19th century, the train was initially called the Afghan Express. Its current name, “The Ghan”, is an abbreviation of the original. Over the train’s three-day journey, it passes through some of the most magnificent natural wonders of Australia, including the Finke River, one of the few rivers in the world to start and end in a desert; the Great Victoria Desert, the country’s largest arid region; and Katherine Gorge, a rock formation that dates back millions of years. Premium classes on The Ghan include the Platinum and Gold Class, where compartments come with double beds and attached bathrooms. However, there are also more budget-friendly Red sleeper cabins and seats.

Hot meals for Platinum and Gold Class travellers are served in the Queen Adelaide Dining Room, where the decor is reminiscent of plush European train carriages. Guests staying in other levels of accommodation can get their meals from the train’s cafe. The train makes two four-hour stops along its journey, one at Alice Springs and another at Katherine; guests get to take off-train excursions such as scenic helicopter flights and trekking tours.


Shinkansen No list of the world’s most spectacular trains is complete without a mention of the Shinkansen (literally, “New Line”) – once the fastest locomotive in the world. When it first made its maiden journey in Japan in 1964, the bullet train boasted technologies that were way ahead of its time. Besides being able to travel at 210kmh (the average speed of Japanese trains then was 120kmh), which slashed travelling time by half, the Shinkansen also possessed a host of other cutting-edge features. They included an automated signalling system that dispensed with the need for traditional trackside signals; a wire-system that allowed track and network-related information to reach the driver quickly; and even seismographs in the main control centres that automatically stopped all trains if an earthquake threatened. Following its success, the Shinkansen network now has more than 2,300km of high-speed rail that’s maintained by four companies under Japan Railway Company – the largest being the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). As the owner of five Shinkansen lines and other railways north of Tokyo that

cumulatively serve more than six billion people annually, JR East is the biggest passenger railway company in the world. Its 1,000km Shinkansen network connects Tokyo with 52 stations in major cities throughout eastern Japan. Five different state-of-the-art bullet trains ply the five routes managed by JR East. Ranging from the 1994 E1 train to the ultra-modern 2011 E5 series, all of them feature two classes: the more premium Green Car which is comparable to Business Class seats on airplanes; and the Ordinary Car which parallels the Economy Class. However, the E5 series used on the Tohuku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori (Japan’s longest Shinkansen) offers a special Gran Class that comes with extra spacious 45-degree-reclining seats and in-cabin attendants. Despite the success of the Shinkansen, the Japanese rail companies and engineers are not about to rest on their laurels. Work to install Maglev (magnetic levitation) trains that are capable of hitting speeds in excess of 500kmh is currently underway. And if successful, it would represent the new milestone in the history of Japanese rail travel.

Rees’ career with Emirates started in UK before he moved on to manage the airline’s business in Dubai and then in Greece. In 2009, Rees was tasked to manage the airline’s growth in Singapore and Brunei, with the responsibility of passenger services as well as airport and cargo operations under his belt. Being the first airline to order the A380, Emirates continues to be a game changer in the increasingly competitive landscape of the airline industry. Boosted by a number of “firsts” in the industry, Emirates remains at the forefront of innovation and maintains cost-effective operations that have made it a fast-growing business to be reckoned with.

When Emirates first launched in 1985, what were the favourable economic and industry conditions that made it a profitable entity within just three years? From having just two aircraft—a leased Boeing 737 and an Airbus 300 B4 when Emirates flew its first routes out of Dubai on October 25, 1985, Emirates has evolved into a globally influential travel and tourism brand today with a fleet of 198 aircraft, including the world’s largest Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 fleet. Then in 1985 as now, our goal was quality, not quantity, and in the years since taking those first small steps into the regional travel scene, Emirates is now known the world over for our commitment to the highest standards of quality in every aspect of our business. Though wholly owned by the Government of Dubai, Emirates has grown in

After making its initial start-up investment, the Government of Dubai saw fit to treat Emirates as a wholly independent business entity. Fast forward today, we are thriving because of it.

The saying “death by taxes” is one of the bugbears of airline operators – the other being government regulations. What is Emirates’ take on this? The Dubai Government’s Open Skies Policy and efforts to make the Emirate a place where it is easy to do business have been critical to the success of the airline. Naturally, Emirates complies with aviation tax requirements in all jurisdictions we operate. With taxes such as the European ETS scheme, we have complied with the submissions demanded while strongly disputing the validity and method behind the scheme. In too many cases, governments see the aviation industry as an easy target for revenue generation (often under the guise of environmental concerns) while not appreciating the benefits to the economy that a strong aviation sector brings.

Over the years, has Emirates changed its business modus operandi in any way? Why? Since our inception, Emirates has demonstrated that air travel can be stimulated by offering seamless service to passengers via an efficient hub such as Dubai. Multiple daily services create new city pair connections and reduce journey elapsed times. Innovation in product offering is key to attracting passengers and retaining customer loyalty, whilst being cost effective is critical to be able to offer competitive fares. Our business modus operandi remains till today and will continue as we embark on our growth trajectory – we remain focused on building

Security and safety are paramount and cannot be compromised by any convenience issues. Once the security regime is agreed, Emirates believes in working to optimise the customer experience within the framework set out by the relevant authorities.

With the murky outlook for this year’s economy, what are the important issues faced by airlines and what is Emirates’ countermove? Despite challenges in the near term, the future is ripe with a strong outlook for air travel especially in the Asia Pacific region. In Emirates’ view, the market is big for existing airlines and new entrants to co-exist, provided the airline business is managed efficiently with a strong commercial focus. In order to facilitate air travel demand globally, free market access is critical and aero-political hurdles around the world should be removed. From being the first international airline to have inflight video entertainment on every seat, to introducing state-of-the-art mini-suites in its first-class offering, and more recently, the industry first and the only shower spa in its A380 aircraft, Emirates has always been in the forefront of innovation. We, in Emirates, strongly believe that the critical success factors for Emirates are its expansive network connecting even secondary cities in the corner of the globe with one-stop via Dubai; product innovation covering various aspects including the award-winning ice inflight entertainment system; and offering a wonderful passenger experience through an efficient and sophisticated passenger terminal and Corporate Traveller

In your opinion, what is the significant role of a gulf carrier in the international aviation arena? We see ourselves as one of the fastest growing international airlines in the world and a competitive game changer in the international aviation industry. Emirates was the first airline to order the A380 and currently has 31 in service and 59 on order – more than any other carrier by far. Its order book represents 30 per cent of the total orders received by Airbus for this aircraft. As the world’s largest operator of the double-decker aircraft, Emirates’ fleet of 31 A380s serves 21 destinations from Dubai such as Amsterdam, Jeddah, London Heathrow, Manchester, Moscow, Munich, New York, Paris, Rome, Singapore and Toronto. Indeed, with a free and fair open skies policy in Dubai, we are used to dealing with competition. We believe that competition brings numerous benefits to consumers via improvements to services, connections and in-flight features like catering, entertainment and customer service, etc. Our commitment to provide the best possible service for our passengers remains unchanged. Asia Pacific represents more than a quarter of the world economy and is growing 2.5 times faster than Europe or North America. From a global perspective, we are studying market opportunities in Asia Pacific as part of our growth plan.

What is your take on the travel patterns of passengers and how do you see this changing in the near future? Customers continually expect higher service from the airline sector while not wishing to see a significant increase in the price of flying. They have more options to get to their destination than ever before and are getting more discerning in selecting value for money.

After studying political science and public administration in one of the best universities in Turkey, he joined the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey in 2000. Since then, Ali has not looked back. He has traversed the world and realised his dream, which led him to high-flying careers in several European countries. After a stint in Singapore, he moved to Malaysia to join a new team in the Turkish Tourism & Information Office. Corporate

My most memorable business trip was in‌ Augsburg, a city in the south-west of Bavaria, Germany. It gave me the opportunity to interact more effectively with my German clients and colleagues.

FREQUENT TRAVELLER What business protocols or social norms should one take note of? It is customary for business visitors to Istanbul to address new acquaintances by their first names followed by “Bey” (sir) or “Hanim” (lady). On another aspect, secretaries are rarely empowered to take important messages or even know the boss’s schedule, so when calling someone, it is typical for callers to be told to ring back “one hour later” or to fax your queries across. Once the appropriate contacts have been made, however, business visitors are usually treated with warmth and courtesy. Business meetings could be formal or take place over dinner, and punctuality is always expected.

You would advice business travellers to… check your insurance, especially if you are combining a work trip with leisure, visiting an unusual destination or trying adventurous activities. It is also advisable to write down your brief itinerary on one sheet of paper together

with your meeting times, locations and contacts. Keep this on your person so that if your phone battery runs out and you can’t access your diary and contacts, you can refer to it easily. Another important advice is to make sure your credit cards won’t be blocked for “unexpected activity” when using them abroad and that you remember the PINs.

Istanbul’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, Süleymaniye Mosque and the Yeni Cami, which are located within the Byzantine walls and the surrounding area. Istanbul represents the souls of two great empires – the Ottoman and the Byzantine, and its heritage is a marvel that art and culture aficionados will definitely appreciate. The Topkapi Palace for instance, features amazing Byzantine mosaics and frescos; and the mosques are outstanding examples of architectural masterpieces. Istanbul also has a thriving art scene that sees artists showing the best of genres ranging from modern installations to multidisciplinary art. The art venues themselves are also a talking point as you can find them in glamorous party spots and warehouses to converted Ottoman power stations and trendy 19th century apartment blocks.

To experience the beauty of Istanbul, I also recommend that you head to the Kiz Kulesi Restaurant (Kızkulesi, Salacak Mevkii, Uskudar; tel: +90 216 342 4747), a 12th century building turned restaurant located in the Maiden Towers, which is near the Asian shores of the Bosphorus Strait. It is a small cosy place with a lot of history and an interesting legend behind it.

The 360 Istanbul (Stiklal Street, Mısır Apartment, 8th Floor, No. 163, Beyoglu; tel: +90 212 251 10 42 – 43) is another trendy restaurant that is popular with the fashionable crowd and corporate professionals. It is known for its breathtaking 360 degree view of Istanbul – from the steeples of St. Antoine’s Church and across the Bosphorus Strait to the Hagia Sophia Mosque and all the way out to the Sea of Marmara. You can easily find it right on top of a 19th century apartment building that overlooks the old embassy row in Beyoglu.

The best shopping can be done at… Cevahir Mall, which offers six floors of 200 over shops for visitors to shop, dine and catch a movie. Akmerkez Shopping Mall is another option that offers ample retail distractions with almost 250 stores. And of course, visitors should definitely

tasting the local and traditional food as well as visiting historical and art museums.

My favourite souvenir from Turkey is… the evil eye keychain.

My most memorable hotel/resort stay was at… Le Meridien Bali Jimbaran. I enjoyed the high standards of service, the luxe atmosphere and its location in the cultural hub of Jimbaran Village. Bali is a memorable destination for me; from the friendly people to its vibrant and colourful culture, lively nightspots to deserted beaches, towering volcanoes to enchanting temples, and rice fields to rainforests. Soakıng up the local culture with a visit to one of the island’s 20,000 temples and palaces, attending a festival, or watching a mesmerising traditional dance performance made it a perfect stay for me. Paris “The city of cities” as Victor Hugo once put it, is where the romantics, art enthusiasts and fashionistas gather. This French capital has layers of rich history and is the site of some of the most stunningly beautiful urban landscapes – Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Champs-Elysées – in the world. Fashion powerhouses such as Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier and Hermes set roots in Paris. Thousands of journalists and hundreds of buyers flood the city for Paris Fashion Week, held twice a year. If Paris is not synonymous to fashion, then nowhere else in the world is.

Louvre-Tuileries Perhaps one of the most interesting and busiest places in Paris, Louvre-Tuileries is not only home to the legendary Louvre Museum, but also the palatial Tuileries Gardens and Palais Royale. One must not miss out on visiting the Louvre Museum (Musée du Louvre, 75058 Paris), which houses a massive collection of about 35,000 pieces of artwork dating across different periods in history, and displays masterpieces by Leonardo Da Vinci, Delacroix, Vermeer, as well as thematic exhibitions and art from around the world. Yet behind its antique façade are rows of upscale boutiques along the extension called rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Lanvin, major cosmetic brand Lancome, atelier and boutique of couturier Dominique Sirop, and Hermes are some of the notable establishments along this stretch of the street.

Boulevard Haussmann A conglomeration of breathtaking architecture and luxury shopping, Boulevard Haussmann (8th and 9th arrondissements) has two major department stores – Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. The glass and steel dome and Art Nouveau stairways inside Galeries Lafayette (40, Blvd, Haussmann, 9th arrondissment) portrays a sense of opulence and august – the perfect embodiment of luxury. Find exquisite jewellery at Cartier and Chaumet, or shop at designer boutiques such as Burberry, Karl Lagerfeld, G-Star and Diesel. Known for its large collection of perfumes and cosmetics, Printemps (64, Blvd, Haussmann 75009 Paris) is the other department store along Boulevard Haussmann. I’m someone who came to Paris as a teenager, and I dreamed of coming back to Paris as a visitor. I never dreamed of having a job at the biggest luxury house in Paris and, you know, 15 odd years later, I’m still here. Marc Jacobs

Louis Vuitton Every brand has its own history. For Louis Vuitton, otherwise commonly known as LV, it is a remarkable one. This French fashion house was founded in 1854 by Louis Vuitton, and first created a range of flat-bottom trunks that are lightweight and airtight. This family business flourished under generations of care and clever marketing, and has created the world-renowned signature Monogram Canvas, the motif that is reflected on its leather goods from suitcases, handbags to wallets, which are collected by enthusiasts with fervour. In 1997, Marc Jacobs was made the Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton, and has helped design the brand’s first prêt-à-porter for both men and women. Only a carefully selected few are able to represent Louis Vuitton in its advertising campaigns. Top models including Naomi

Campbell, Kate Moss, Jessica Stam and Karolina Kurkova were part of Louis Vuitton’s marketing campaigns from print ads to fashion shows. The brand has also chosen famous artistes such as Madonna, Hayden Christensen and Angelina Jolie for its campaigns. If one takes a closer look at the label’s leather goods, accessories and ready-to-wear pieces, one would realise that what Louis Vuitton presents throughout the years, from its very humble beginning of merely designing trunks to its modern day full-fledge apparels, is the encapsulation of luxury axiom. It does not only represent opulence; the creations also take one back to childhood (Spring/ Summer 2012’s glittering fairground carousel), a romantic journey (Fall/Winter 2012’s steam powered locomotive), and anywhere that one’s imagination leads.

Spring / Summer 2013 The women’s collection features crisp, clean lines and bold blankness. The fundamental of this collection is its duality, between the two colours of each grid, shiny and matt texture, presence and absence (cut-out squares), all presented on models in pairs during the fashion show. Even the bags and shoes retain its rectilinear discipline, all right angled and re-engineered in square and cubic forms. Taking a journey to the sea, this season’s menswear portrays a relaxed, easy silhouette, with lightness and suppleness of fabrication, all possessing a slight nautical nostalgia. The simple colour palette concentrates on navy and white with flashes of yellow and fluorescents. The bags showcased in the show are the reinvention of traditional totem, with waterproof nylon in technical, messenger bags, and the check pattern of the shagreen mini-trunk bags. Some people say that one cannot go to Paris without visiting Le Marais. As one of Paris oldest and most dazzling quarters, Le Marais (3rd and 4th arrondissements) itself is a piece of art. The preservation of Medieval and Renaissance-era Paris can be seen on its narrow streets and architectural style. Be intrigued by the classical-inspired apartments and a slew of bars, restaurants, fashion boutiques, trendy shops, wine shops and art galleries. Avenue des Champ-Élysées Arguably the most famous street in Paris, Avenue des Champs-Élysées is not only a strikingly constructed street; its grandeur and glamour shines through the exquisite stores, cafes and restaurants lined tidily along the glistening tiled floor. The broad avenue is also used for parades for presidents and soldier parade on Bastille Day, as well as the final stretch of road for Tour de France.

Avenue Montaigne There is no lack of high fashion in Avenue Montaigne (8th arrondissement). Originally called the allée des Veuves (widow’s alley) as women in mourning once gathered, there is no trace of such bereaved atmosphere in today’s Avenue Montaigne. Replaced by fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, Chloe, Valentino and Ralph Lauren, it has become one of the most visited places for luxury shopping.
