While the rest of the country is predominantly Muslim, Bali sees a higher percentage of Hindu worshippers. It is important to note that religion is a way of life in Bali and it isn’t unusual for streets to be blocked off for a ceremony.

As you walk around, you’ll also notice Canang Sari – a daily flower offering – strewed all around. Respect the religion and walk around the offerings, as well as dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) when visiting temples and holy sites.

Everything in Bali, even the airports, are shut down for the day during this time.

GETTING AROUND

International flights arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport. More than 140 countries can now enjoy visa exemption if visiting for less than 30 days. Taxis are widely

available at the airport and it is best to negotiate prices before boarding. There are charts that list suggested prices near taxi stands.

Otherwise, book for pick-up through your resort or accommodation. If travelling out of the resort, hire a driver for the day to ferry you to various destinations. Some drivers are even able to make recommendations but do note some may earn a commission from certain entertainment bookings.

GETTING AROUND

Guests may also hire taxis or rent their own cars at the ferry terminals or resorts. As a country with a majority Muslim population, Malaysia is affected by what is called the Arab Season between the months of Jul-Aug, which sees a spike in visitors especially from the Gulf States. The end of Ramadan also sees increased travel activity in the region, which may be worth the squeeze to witness some cultural and religious festivals during this period. Avoid the typical high season of Dec-Feb where possible, when the confluence of public and school

holidays collide, but if you must travel during this period be sure to secure your transport and accommodations at least a few months in advance.

GETTING AROUND

Budget flights are a great option for hopping around the region, but the predominant modes of transport in Peninsular Malaysia are bus and taxi, while Sabah and Sarawak have their own peculiarities of preferring travel by boat. Most intercity buses are comfortable, with air conditioning, though seats can

be tightly packed together. A few routes offer luxury or executive coach options that are more expensive but come with the comforts of added legroom and on-board television and toilets. Alternatively, longdistance taxis can prove more economical if shared amongst a group, and you can either agree to a fixed fare beforehand or request for a metred fare; the best times to catch longdistance taxis is early in the mornings at or around the express bus station.​

MALAYSIA CONSISTING BOTH THE MALAY PENINSULA and part of the island of Borneo, Malaysia has it all – glorious beaches, rich marine life, and dense rainforests. While the cosmopolitan capital of Kuala Lumpur is home to colonial architecture, bustling shopping districts, and the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, the rest of the country beckons with more laidback pursuits such as snorkelling off Tioman Island and Langkawi, hiking up Mt Kinabalu in Sabah, or wading through the rivers and traditional longhouse villages of Sarawak. Sipadan, a tiny island south of Semporna, is especially revered amongst divers for its steep 600-metre plunges and amazing underwater topography. All resorts are located on their own private island and this means that all entertainment, dining and services at your resort are the only ones you’ll be able to access for most of your stay.

Expect to pay higher prices as most things have to be imported into Maldives and then shipped to the resort. As a Muslim state, be warned that alcohol, pork, drugs, pornography and public observance of non-Muslim religions are banned on the inhabited islands but resorts will

often offer alcohol at the very least. Maldives retains a tropical climate through the year. Avoid visiting from July to August due to the southwest monsoon that brings the country most of its rain for the year. The dry season is from December to April, which also means peak season for the resorts.

As Phuket is a top tourist destination, expect to experience touting everywhere you turn, especially from locals at the beach and from taxi drivers.

Most will offer massage services, tours around the island, seafood restaurants and questionable entertainment at a discount. But be warned that these touters often charge exorbitant prices in order to take home a bigger cut.

GETTING AROUND

Ideally, arrange for a car and driver to pick you up at your resort before the start of your trip.

Prices and destinations can be negotiated and usually cost a lot less than what resorts will offer. If not exploring much outside of the resort, hailing taxis or tuk tuks will be a cheaper option but will require reasonable bargaining skills for a good rate. In recent years, the smartphone app, GrabTaxi, has gained popularity

with foreigners for its ease of use in getting a taxi from a reputable company. Prices are fixed for limousine cars and are comparable to that of hiring a metered taxi. The more adventurous can try taking the Songtaew (local bus service) to visit places across town.

Destinations are written in English and fares rarely go above US$1.50 per trip, making it one of the more viable options for travellers to Phuket.
