ADVISER’S NOTE

Happy New Year everyone! What is your resolution for 2015? Health? Love? Meaningful life? Fulfilling work? Whatever it may be, it is always useful to consider what is most important to us and to work towards that, as well as to stay focus on it. It is all too easy to be distracted by the present and the immediate gratifications, or to yield to the social pressures around us. We really should not wait till it is too late to regret. The AirAsia crash was so sudden and we can only imagine how painful the unsaid goodbyes are; the emotional impact on families and loved ones must be immeasurable. During the Edusave Awards, I’d asked many of the students to express their thanks and love for their parents. It was a funny and sometimes awkward exercise and you could see a wide range of different reactions. The whole idea was just to remind ourselves to tell our loved ones that we love them and to thank them for all that they have done. In this new year, we could perhaps also endeavour to get to know at least one new neighbour - the person that you have seen for so many years along the street but never said hello to or even smiled at. There could well be a new friendship to be grown. We could try and make a difference to a fellow colleague at work. Or to join in the outreach to our fellow neighbours who may need a helping hand. On our part, we will continue to create opportunities for residents to interact and help those who need that extra boost. We will continue to make the environment better with the various upgrading works, and to tend to your municipal concerns as best as we can. However it unfolds, I wish you all a fantastic year ahead! Regards, Tan Chuan-Jin

K-CC HISTORY

Old but Gold These districts in the area have come a long way to become the popular housing esates they are today

Joo Chiat

Renowned for its multicultural heritage, the varied influences of which are evident in the architecture and dining options, the residential conservation area derived its name from philanthropist and landowner Chew Joo Chiat. It formerly consisted of plantations and country houses for the wealthy and in the early 1900s welcomed many Eurasian and Peranakan families. Joo Chiat was declared Singapore’s first Heritage Town in 2011 and at present homes several art galleries, design studios, and upmarket eateries.

Telok Kurau

Meaning “mango fish bay” in Malay, this area that connects Changi Road to Marine Parade Road was during the pre-war days a sleepy fishing village. It was a major site for Chinese persecution during the Japanese Occupation but today contains a well-organised mix of apartments, private houses, and schools.

Chai-Chee

Lying to the north of Siglap, east of Kembangan, and west of Bedok New Town is this area that was once where farmers gathered daily to sell their produce. The village was the first in the eastern part of the country to be developed by the Housing and Development Board in the 1960s, and three factories – Rollei Cameras, Varta Batteries, and Nippon Miniature Bearing – were established to create jobs. Chai Chee is now a modern housing estate with two expansive industrial sections. 6

Estate Elders We talk to residents who have been living in various Kembangan-Chai Chee estates for three decades or more to find out what upgrades they are thankful for Juliet Chin, 65 One of the first residents of Telok Kurau, Juliet has been living in the area for the past 30 years. She is especially happy with the implementation of the One Connect onestop hotline as private estate residents are now able to report neighbourhood maintenance issues without hassle. The affable woman misses the warmth of the kampung spirit but is thankful that the government has recently become more interactive with the people.

Tan Ah San, 73 Ah San attained her Singapore citizenship in 1993 and has been living in Chai Chee for the past 35 years. She is grateful for modern infrastructure such as the bus interchange and quite enjoys the living arrangements a HDB allows. When not belting out tunes during karaoke sessions, the native Hokkien speaker can be found socialising with friends at the pavilion beneath her block.

Tipah Binte Ismail, 62 Having lived in Chai Chee for the past 40 years, Tipah has watched the area develop and flourish and is grateful for upgrades such as supermarkets and bus services. She is pleased with the tremendous improvements in hygiene standards and that getting from one place to another is today highly convenient. Tipah is an avid cook and regularly prepares lontong to share with her friends at the Kembangan-Chai Chee Senior Activity Centre.

Goh Soo Hock, 81 Soo Hock has been a resident of Chai Chee for the past 42 years and is proud of how evolved the HDB estate has become. The bachelor spends most of his time helping those in need at the Kembangan-Chai Chee Senior Activity Centre but can otherwise be spotted playing chess with friends at a nearby coffee shop. He is happy with the neighbourhood association as the elderly have been given due attention and care. THE TWEETER JANUARY-MARCH 2015

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Four-generational Neighbours In celebration of our nation’s 50 year, we talk to residents of four different age groups to find out more about the locals among us

Ummu Kieyasha, 4

A young resident of Chai Chee, Ummu attends the Mini World Child Care & Development Centre and frequents the gleaming shores of East Coast Park with her close-knit family. When not dancing along to children TV programmes such as Mat Yoyo, the cherubic girl can be found tucking into her favourite roti prata and, impressively, various spicy dishes. On behalf her charmingly shy but playful child, Ummu’s mother Linda has this to say about her wishes for the nation: “Happy birthday Singapore! More prosperous and wonderful years ahead for my home sweet home.”

Edlyn Tan, 26

Although a resident of Marine Parade Edlyn is an active volunteer and she chairs Kampong Ubi’s Youth Executive Committee, a managing body

that organises events ranging from sports and recreation to culture, the arts, and community service for youths. The warmhearted woman who also participates in several Yellow Ribbon Project initiatives was working for MINDEF for the past five years but is at present between jobs to take a breather. Edlyn is deeply appreciative of what our forefathers have done for Singapore but also notes that “a loving family makes a warm country.” Aside from engaging in hobbies such as swimming and martial arts, the natural leader is also in the midst of organising an excursion for the elderly to honour SG50.

Tan Pak Nee, 87 and Ng Guan Chuan, 77

These former vegetable vendors have been living in Chai Chee for 37 years and are on friendly terms with members of many neighbourhood circles. Married for the past 54 years, the genial great-grandparents are proud of how evolved the education system has become and the exceptional standards of childcare services available today. The well-travelled couple feels that Singapore is one of the best countries to settle in as things are modern and accessible and are happy with the dynamic transformation of their estate. While they do miss the kampong spirit, they maintain a sense of togetherness with their neighbours by joining a wide range of recreational centre activities. THE TWEETER JANUARY-MARCH 2015
