Singapore Located on the southern tip of the Malayan Peninsula, Singapore is a vibrant city-state that is small in size but has loads to offer visitors. 5
introduction All About Singapore
A Brief History According to ancient folklore, Singapore was first discovered by a prince from Sumatra, who saw a lion on the island and named it the “Lion City”, or Singapura. Modern Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, when it was established as a port of call for the British Empire. The British ruled the country till 1959, before it became part of Malaya in 1963. Singapore declared her independence in 1965, and has come a long way from her humble beginnings as a fishing village, to a colourful and exciting city that welcomes visitors from all over the world to her shores. Melting Pot of Cultures One of the most unique things about Singapore is her multiracial, multi-cultural society. The country has four main races – Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian, and is also home to a large expatriate population from all around the world. While in Singapore, take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich culture that abounds all over the city. Head to Chinatown for a taste of Chinese cuisine and customs; Little India to experience the sights and sounds of the Indian culture; or Kampong Glam for a glimpse of Malay traditions. A Bit of the Old, A Bit of the New Singapore doesn’t just offer visitors a glimpse of the old – being the modern, cosmopolitan city it is, the city has all the conveniences a modern traveler would expect. With skyscrapers that create an impressive skyline, sprawling shopping malls and free WiFi hotspots all over town, there’s nothing “backwards” about this tiny red dot.
For a taste of contemporary Singapore, stroll down the Orchard Road and Marina Bay area. Singapore’s most popular shopping spots, they best represent how the country has developed from the little fishing village of yore. Don’t forget to pay a visit to Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Flyer and the Esplanade, all outstanding examples of Modern Singapore. The Great Singapore Sale happens between May and July every year – the great bargains are the perfect excuse to renew your wardrobe! Always Exciting Formula One races, international golf tournaments, theatre performances, concerts by leading international music artistes, art exhibitions… there’s always something interesting happening in Singapore. Check out our Calendar of Events and remember to book your tickets early to join in the excitement. Basic facts Getting Around Singapore has a very efficient and easily navigable public transport system. Go around Singapore via MRT train, public bus, taxi or the SIA Hop-on Bus. When to Visit? Enjoying balmy tropical weather all-round, any time is great time to visit. Look out for events or festivals you may be interested in and visit them - our Calendar of Events has more information about local events and festivals for your consideration. Languages English is a common language in Singapore with Mandarin, Malay and Tamil widely spoken by the different ethnic groups here.

ORCHARD
Orchard Road took its name from the many fruit orchards situated in the area during Singapore’s colonial era. Today, it is transformed into Singapore’s favourite shopping belt. This broad boulevard stretches from Dhoby Ghaut MRT station to the intersection with Orange Grove Road. You can find stalls along the pavements or famous giant boutiques like Giorgio Armani. Big modern buildings such as Ngee Ann City have an outstanding architecture which consists of fortress-like twin towers. Further down along the same stretch of road lies the distinctive glass-coned structure of Wheelock Place which houses the wellknown Marks & Spencer departmental store and many other retail outlets. Be prepared to maul through the heavy crowds on weekends.
Orchard Route
The bus service travels along two routes – one to Marina Bay and another along Orchard Road. SIA HopOn Bus passengers can transfer to the Sentosa Rider at four stops, two along the Marina Bay route, and two along the Orchard Road route. Along the Orchard Road route, visitors just have to walk a short distance from the SIA Hop-On Bus stop at Tangs to Marriott Hotel, or from Orchard Emerald to The Heeren to get on the Sentosa Rider; the two stops along the Marina Bay route are at the Singapore Flyer and Raffles Hotel, and are direct connecting so you just have to alight from the SIA Hop-On Bus and board the Sentosa Rider at the same stop.
First bus starts at 9am from Marriott Hotel. Last bus ends at 10.30pm at Chinatown (bus stop opposite Sri Mariamman Temple)

LITTLE INDIA
Finding Little India is easy when you follow the spicy aromas of exotic spices and the scent from burning incense. An ethnic enclave not initially assigned to the Indian community through Raffles’ town plan, Little India only became populated with Indians when Chinatown became overcrowded. Today, it is one of Singapore’s key cultural precincts, and holds evidence of the various trades and industries of the Indians who settled here.
Just 15 minutes from Singapore’s city centre, Sentosa – Asia’s Favourite Playground – is the perfect holiday destination for everyone. Behold a stunning variety of natural, historic and thrilling attractions at Imbiah Lookout, 3.2km stretch of pristine beaches, 5-star spas and resorts and quick access to great shopping, clubbing, and dining at Sentosa.

Hainanese Chicken Rice
Tender, juicy slivers of chicken, drizzled with a soy-based sauce and served on a bed of fragrant rice that is cooked with pandan leaves and chicken broth. This is Hainanese Chicken Rice, a classic Singaporean dish. Adapted from “Wenchang Chicken”, a wellknown dish from Hainan, China, dip your chicken into the fiery chilli sauce for a kick of spice – there’s also a sauce of pounded ginger for those who can’t take spice.
Nasi Lemak Traditionally served during breakfast, Nasi Lemak has come to be recognised as a suitable meal at any time of the day. The wonderfully fragrant rice, which is steamed with coconut milk, is delicious even on its own. It is nonetheless served with a variety of accompaniments, at your selection at many stalls, and a spicy sauce on the side.
Satay
Food
Food, glorious food! Singapore is a gourmet paradise where you can find everything from world-class French cuisine to the simplest of hawker foods, so get ready to start feasting.
Skewers of meat, marinated in a host of spices and grilled over a charcoal fire – this is Satay, one of Singapore’s most iconic dishes. Satay is usually made with chicken, mutton, and beef, and served with a spicy peanut sauce, and slices of red onion and cucumber. If you feel like having a satay feast, head to Lau Pa Sat, which turns into an al fresco satay heaven every night.
Chilli Crab Many people consider Chilli Crabs as Singapore’s national dish – you can’t say you’ve visited the country if you’ve never tried this yummy delicacy. The crabs – most often mud crabs – are fried at a high heat, and then drowned in a chilli-and-tomato sauce with ribbons of beaten egg in it. Once you’re done with the crab, mop up the sauce with accompanying deep-fried mantou (or Chinese buns) – this is the ultimate Singaporean Chilli Crab experience. One of the best places to enjoy Chilli Crab is at one of the restaurants at its birthplace at East Coast Seafood Centre, where you can tuck into the crab while enjoying the cool sea breeze.
Bak Kut Teh Bak Kut Teh is a Chinese dish that consists of meaty pork ribs served in a complex broth of herbs and spices that is simmered for hours. There are two main variants of Bak Kut Teh in Singapore; one with a sweeter peppery soup, and another with a more herbal taste. Whichever you choose, it can be eaten with rice, noodles, and fried dough fritters.
Laksa A dish birthed from the fusion of Chinese and Malay cultures, Laksa is a dish of rich, savoury coconut-based curry soup, usually served with thick rice vermicelli, a spoonful of spicy sambal chilli, and a sprinkling of Vietnamese coriander, or what the locals call “laksa leaves”. The noodles are served with fishcake, prawns, beancurd puffs, beansprouts, and cockles.

Ice Kachang A ubiquitous dessert found in food courts, hawker centres, and restaurants, Ice Kachang’s popularity could be explained by Singapore’s tropical climate. Presented as a mountain of shaved ice topped with different colourings and condensed milk, it invites you to tunnel into the ice mountain and reveal the colourful ingredients hidden beneath.
Hokkien Prawn Noodles This local favourite is made of egg noodles and ingredients like prawns, bean sprouts, and squid rings fried together in a rich stock. However, the most crucial element of Hokkien Prawn Noodles is the skill of the cook. In experienced hands, it is a thoroughly gratifying dish that will keep you wanting for more. We recommend that you try this mixed with the sambal chilli and juice squeezed from the lime that is served with it.
Durian
Known locally as the ‘king of fruits’, the durian’s appearance is certainly a formidable one. However, beneath its large thorncovered husk is flesh of distinctive taste and odour. Its strong aroma divides opinion among those who come within close proximity of it, but the huge number of local durian lovers is testament to its exquisite flavour.
Food Republic Situated at various locations around Singapore Feast on tasty local and international treats in airconditioned comfort at Food Republic. With stalls serving up everything from Korean barbeque and Western meals, to Bak Kut Teh and Roti Prata, there is something that will suit everyone’s fancy.
Makansutra Gluttons Bay Open: 5pm to 2am (Mon to Thu), 5pm to 3am (Fri and Sat), 4pm to 1am (Sun)
Some of the country’s best hawkers are gathered at Gluttons Bay, serving their wares from retro street food carts, right beside the iconic Esplanade.
