Discovering Darwin

A fascinating tropical city perched on the northern edge of the Australian continent, Darwin is a wonderful amalgamation of modernity and tradition, a world-class tourism destination and gateway to Asia that boasts some of the best in cultural attractions, delectable food, and endless entertainment. THE ART OF SHOPPING

D

arwin is an art-lover’s paradise, whether you’re in the market for something more traditional, or looking forward to more modern offerings. The inner city of Parap houses the Nomad Art Gallery and Outstation Gallery, both displaying wonderful selections of aboriginal as well as contemporary art. In addition to painted canvases and prints, many of these galleries also offer bold sculptures, mixed-media art, and provocative photography.

Parliament House sits serenely by the bay

Magic begins as the sun sets

TASTEFUL TEMPTATIONS Grab a taste of the exotic at the sizzling Hanuman restaurant, which plates up modern twists on traditional Indian, Thai, and Nonya cuisines. Helmed by the esteemed authority on all things oriental and delicious, chef Jimmy Shu and his team serve up fresh quality produce swathed in unique flavours. If you’re looking for a bit more of a heritage atmosphere, Char Restaurant within the beautiful Admiralty House is perfect for those who seek exceptional service and style to go with their exquisite dinner. Try the wildly successful Jellyfish menu, a specialty of restaurateur John Kilroy, or indulge in the star attraction – a supremely prepared Wagyu Rump steak with all the trimmings. For a unique experience, try the Charles Darwin Sunset Buffet Dinner Cruise. The 2.5-hour cruise will take you on journey around the harbour while you admire the sunset and sip on some sparkling wine. Indulge in the buffet menu of freshly shucked oysters and pickled baby octopus, char-grilled Mediterranean vegetables, tarragon baked local reef fish, and the alltime favourite baby chat potato salad.

Go crocodile fishing at the wildly adventurous Crocosaurus Cove

EDUCATIONAL ADVENTURES

Shop handicraft delights at the various local markets

During the dry season, a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike is the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, held every Thursday and Sunday evening from the end of April to October. Pick up some handmade jewellery from local craftsmen, or artisanal natural remedies like essential oils and soaps. You can also stop to get a quick massage by a holistic therapist, or dabble in the occult and get a tarot reading done. With over 200 stalls hawking a multitude of cuisines – from Southeast Asian to Greek and Portuguese – as well as talented buskers, bands, and live performances to entertain you as you meander through the palm-lined boulevards, it’s no wonder that the Mindil Beach Sunset Market is such an immense hit.

Get up close and personal with Australia’s iconic Saltwater Crocodiles at Crocosaurus Cove, a unique display of Australian reptiles located right in the heart of the city. A wildlife experience in the centre of urban Darwin, Crocosaurus Cove is home to the famous Cage of Death – the only cage in the world that lets you swim in the same enclosure as these massive Saltwater

Crocodiles. There is also a 200,000-litre fresh water aquarium for you to view some gigantic Barramundi, Sawfish, and Whiprays. Discover Darwin’s unique history with the Darwin Explorer, a leisurely bus service that allows you to hop on and hop off as you visit landmark attractions at your own pace. This double-decker bus service also comes with lively and informative commentary about the city, including its rich aboriginal culture and its military past, as well as entertaining little titbits like how the city got its name – the answer is not quite what you would expect it to be. asmania’s breathtaking wilderness scenery is the stuff of legends but this Australian escape to nature also involves fabulous produce to ensure an indulgent time for all visitors. Lovers of gourmet food and beverages can enjoy produce fresh from the farm or sea while admiring dramatic landscapes in the world’s cleanest air. Here are just eight of Tasmania’s iconic gourmet delights.

SHUCKED OYSTERS Tasmania’s pristine waterways ensure the freshest seafood imaginable. This means sampling freshly shucked oysters from oyster farms such as Barilla Bay near Hobart or on remote Bruny Island. Barilla Bay Oyster Farm conducts tasting tours and there’s a restaurant for enjoying oysters fresh from the estuary. On the tranquil east coast, Freycinet Marine Farm at Coles Bay and Lease 65 at St Helens offer wonderful oyster tasting experiences.

WILD ABALONE Abalone is one of life’s gourmet delights with Tasmanian abalone being acclaimed around the world. Tas Live Abalone on the outskirts of Hobart is a boutique producer of natural wild abalone sustainably harvested and nourished in the pristine Southern Ocean waters. Enjoy a tour and the opportunity to buy direct at wholesale prices.

SENSATIONAL SEAFOOD Other seafood indulgences include southern rock lobster, ocean trout and salmon obtained fresh from producers such as Petuna, Seafoods, Tassal and 41 Degrees South Tasmania. Visitors to the capital Hobart can also indulge on fresh seafood to suit all budgets served from affordable harbourside punts to acclaimed restaurants such as Fish Frenzy, Mures and The Mill on Morrison.

SWEET HONEY

BOUNTIFUL BEVERAGES

Leatherwood honey is considered one of the most flavoursome honeys in the world. Its golden nectar is produced from leatherwood trees which thrive in wilderness areas and is exclusive to Tasmania. Buy direct from producers like Blue Hills, Tasmanian Honey Company, Melita Honey Farm and R. Stephens.

Tasmanian cool temperature wines such as Pinot Noir and Riesling have made their way onto the world’s most discerning wine lists. Wine touring is popular with three recognised wine routes around Launceston, Hobart and the east coast to explore. When a single malt whisky from Hobart’s Sullivans Cove recently won the World Whisky Awards in London, connoisseurs were suitably impressed. Cascade and James Boags have crafted beers to satisfy thirsty Taswegians for over a century. Learn more about brewing by joining a James Boags brewery tour. Artisanal micro-brewed ales are produced in other places with brews such as Moo Brew, Iron Horse and Seven Sheds (also try the mead) setting the benchmark. Organic apple ciders made by Willie Smiths use the finest local apples. Some farms even sell their fresh produce from the farm gate where payment is via an honesty box. Another option is to buy produce in energetic markets like Salamanca (Hobart, Saturday mornings) and Evandale (near Launceston, Sunday mornings). Adventurous tourists can enjoy fine foods and wines in the wilderness by going on a world-class ‘glamping’ holiday. Take in stunning landscapes on either the Bay of Fires or Cradle Huts Walks where hikers walk for the day and spend each night being pampered in deluxe accommodation while enjoying Tassie’s finest produce.

ARTISANAL CHEESES Tasmania’s verdant pasturelands are home to the world’s happiest cows. An extensive range of awardwinning cheeses are subsequently produced all over Tasmania. All are made by artisans with a passion for perfection. Leading cheese makers include Bruny Island Cheese, Wicked Cheese, Ashgrove Cheese, Pyengana and King Island. Many have retail outlets and sell direct to consumers.

NATURAL BEEF It’s not by chance that both Cape Grim and Greenham label their beef, ‘natural beef’ as Tasmanian beef is raised on pristine pastures. Enjoy the freshness and flavour.

SILKY SHORTBREAD Everybody loves biscuits especially the freshly baked premium Cripps Tasmanian shortbread prepared from an old family recipe. Many rate them better than imported Scottish shortbread. For something uniquely Aussie, seek out tasty ANZAC biscuits.

Seoul Searching

Surfing the Korean Wave is never more exciting than in the spirited city of Seoul, a rising star in all things fun, fabulous, and fashionable. CITY CENTRE

T

he main shopping and tourist districts of Seoul can be split into two categories – North of the Han River, and South. Widely considered as the unofficial “heart” of Seoul, the City Centre is situated in the Jung district to the north, and holds some of the few remaining European-style government buildings in the country, vestiges of its Japanese imperial colonialist past. The large central plaza in the middle of City Hall and the Bank of Korea often serves as a rallying point for protests and soccer games. Travelling couples can enjoy a starry-eyed stroll along the picturesque Deoksugung’s Stone Wall Path, or indulge in a romantic date at the famed Namsan “love locks” bridge and N Seoul Tower (or otherwise commonly referred to as Namsan Tower); marking the highest point in Seoul, this lofty peak offers panoramic views of the glittering nightscape below and houses the N Grill, a revolving restaurant that serves up western-style cuisine in a luxurious atmosphere. Myeong-dong Every shopping fanatic who arrives at Seoul will hear of Myeong-dong. The prestigious locale of many international flagship stores to the country, this extensive network of main streets and small alleys is a good mix of upscale labels and underground boutiques that are packed during weekends. Big names to be found here include Zara, H&M, UNIQLO, and Nike, whereas the sprawling floors of the famous Lotte Department Store offers a comprehensive array of duty free shopping that you can pay for and collect at the airport before your departure – very handy if you intend to do some intensive shopping and need to keep your arms free for other purchases. Myeong-dong also offers a great selection of local specialty labels, such as Beanpole, Codes Combine, and Banila B, all of which offer the iconic urban

casual style so easily spotted on the streets of Seoul. Cosmetics fans will have no shortage of standalone boutiques offering inexpensive skincare and makeup from names such as Nature Republic, Etude House, The Face Shop, and Tony Moly. Namdaemun Market Literally translated to mean “south gate”, Namdaemun Market is located on the main southern gate of the old city wall, and is Korea’s oldest traditional market, originating as early as the 14th century under the reign of King Taejong (1367 - 1422). Commonly referred to as the “even has kitchen sink market”, its mind-boggling plethora of small vendors offers up a cornucopia of clothing, fresh vegetables and flowers, household goods, and other assorted knick-knacks all in one massive congregation. Many tourists and wholesale retailers alike seek out this market for its hustle and bustle – especially at night, when the soul of Seoul comes alive and the city thrives with popup tent-and-table eateries hawking local snacks and street food.

GANGNAM Made infamous by the popular hit “Gangnam Style”, the Gangnam district south of the Han river is the glitz and glamour of modern Seoul, a major commercial and nightlife centre that epitomises the futuristic luxury lifestyle of the current generation, and the prestigious locale of some of the most expensive real estate in Korea. In addition to high-end luxury shopping, unique restaurants and boutique cafes,

A romantic icon and the highest point of Seoul

Namdaemun holds the fort as one of the few remains of the old city wall

it also offers some of the best sights in Seoul, such as the Bongeunsa Temple and Banpo Moonlight Rainbow Fountain, the longest bridge fountain in the world. Surrounded by a teem of high-rises, restaurants, upscale bars, and thousands of neon lights, Gangnam Station is the perfect example of Seoul’s underground shopping scene – literally, underground. The huge range of stalls offers a great selection of accessories, bags, and jewellery that aim to help you fit in to the Gangnam Style aesthetic at walletfriendly prices. Linked via underground passage from Gangnam Station is COEX Mall, an enormous basement shopping and entertainment complex, boasting an aquarium, movie theatre, and a Hyundai Department Store. Apgujeong-dong & Cheongdam-dong Shopping in Seoul doesn’t get any more luxurious than on the streets of Apgujeong-dong and Cheongdam-dong. The Galleria Department Store at Apgujeong-dong is the largest single luxury complex in Korea, and houses prestigious names like Goyard, Staint Laurent, Chanel, and Valentino. High-end fashionistas will love the boutique-lined streets of Cheongdam-dong, locally referred to as the Champs Elysées of Korea, home to international brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier, Burberry, and Prada. Also known as Celebrity Street because of its collection of entertainment companies such as SM, JYP, and Cube, Hallyu fans can do some idol-spotting around the neighbourhood at various cafes and

salons. The Horim Art Centre is also a great place to do some art shopping, with a number of well-stocked galleries offering Korean ceramics, paintings, and sculptural pieces. Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil The new “it” neighbourhood in town, Sinsa-dong is a beautiful promenade in the middle of the city that is adorned with golden ginko trees (hence “garosu-gil” meaning “tree-lined street”) and is a quaint collection of art galleries, interior design boutiques, and fashionforward labels in a unique bohemian atmosphere. An amazing juxtaposition of old world and new school sensibilities, its chic Soho-like façade is home to a dazzling array of avant-garde international designers, such as Ann Demeulemeester, Maison Martin Margiela, and the Andre Kim Design Atelier.

DONGDAEMUN & THE PALACE QUARTER Termed the mecca of domestic Korean fashion, the Dongdaemun area (located slightly north east off the City Centre) consists of over 40 different commercial and traditional markets, each offering a wide variety of fashion and accessories at amazing wholesale prices. One of these is the famed Dongdaemun Market, the retail attraction that never sleeps; many stores and food vendors usually start operation around 9pm to cater to the night market crowd, and the famous Mukja Golmok food alley is essential to anyone looking for a taste of the latest trends in Korean cuisine. If you’re in the mood for a bit of alternative shopping, Yangnyeong Market is one of the most famous oriental medicine markets in the country, and is worth a quick jaunt for its curious curation of medicinal wares. Several large fashion complexes in Dongdaemun, like Doota and Migilore, are dedicated to Koreanmade apparel, and together constitute a shopper’s paradise of shoes, toys, leather goods, pet products, and other lifestyle accessories. Doota even has a huge outdoor concert stage, and regularly hosts events such as fashion shows, concerts, modelling contests, and classical Korean music performances. The newest kid of the block is Dongdaemun Design Plaza, also called the DDP, a major urban landmark with its distinctively neo-futuristic façade of exhibition

spaces, rooftop parks, and a housing of restored parts of the Seoul fortress.

Jongno tower overlooking the surrounding Palace Quarter

Bukchon and Insa-dong The Palace Quarter is located in the Jongno district, which contains the highest concentration of Joseon Dynasty landmarks, palaces, and government offices in the city, forming its historical core. Gyeongbokgung, the most famous of the Five Grand Joseon Palaces, is a sprawling expanse of restored courtyards, mini-palaces and shrines, and traditional houses, and is a must-see for first-time visitors to the city. Slightly south of the palace complex is the Bukchon area, which houses over 900 traditional Korean hanoks that have been converted into numerous galleries, craftsmen’s workshops, and guesthouses that offer an authentic “old school” Korean experience. Adjacent to Bukchon is Insa-dong, the largest antiques market street in Seoul. Widely recognised as the cultural heart of the city, Insa-dong is a shopper’s paradise of old books, historical furniture, and handmade traditional crafts. There is also a wide selection of traditional Korean cafeterias offering some of the best local snacks in the city, including hotteok, a sweet dessert pancake that is a comforting concoction of hot fried dough, honey, nuts, and cinnamon.

Take me away to Hawke’s Bay Hawke’s Bay is what you get when world-class wines and marvellous produce come together – there’s no better time to visit this epicurean paradise than during the Food and Wine Classics Hawke’s Bay (F.A.W.C!)

N

ew Zealand has always been at the top of my wanderlust list – with its green pastures, jawdropping sceneries, top-notch vineyards and an impressive gastronomic scene driven by remarkable produce, what more could you ask for? So when an opportunity to attend last year’s summer series of Food and Wine Classics Hawke’s Bay (F.A.W.C!, www.fawc.nz.co) came, I was overjoyed with the idea of experiencing over 50 exciting wining and dining events in 10 days. This year’s event from October 31 to November 9 promises an equally if not more exciting line-up of culinary events.

QUICK BITES & INDULGENCES Wanting to soak in as much of Napier as possible, I woke up early and spent some time poking around the Art Deco city centre’s streets and alleys. On the very first corner I took, I saw Adoro Café’s Fiorenzato Piazza San Marco lever machine and the pastry assortment (Adoro Café, 142 Hastings Street, Napier. Tel: 64/06-835-1747). I had to go in. I walked out with a long black, an almond plus a

A locavore’s lunch to please eco-conscious diners

chocolate croissant (pain au chocolat), two of the popular French pastries offered in the café, and I was ready to resume my gallivanting. I wanted to return to the next day for more pastries, but it was closed. It was truly a blessing in disguise as I ended up ordering a most delectable eggs and bacon on Turkish toast (NZ$12.50) at Café Divine (53 Hastings Street, Napier 4110. Tel: 64/06-835-6218); the first brimming noshery I chanced upon. Studded to the brim with thick bacon strips and runny eggs, this colossal, lipsmacking sandwich was enough to fill me up until lunch. Another joint worth checking out is Mister D (47 Tennyson Street, Napier. Tel: 64/06-835-5022 www. misterd.co.nz). There is a good selection of light bites like the gluten-free granola with Origin Earth pot set yoghurt and fresh fruits, as well as options for hearty appetites like the D-deli breakfast comprising cured meats, Hohepa danbo cheese, boiled egg, tomato confit, toasted sourdough and bread and butter pickle, NZ$24.50. No matter how stuffed you are, make space for the world-famous donuts here (NZ$5, NZ$1 for every syringe). Although the donut is fabulous on its own with its generous sugar cinnamon coating, the process of injecting your own filling (custard, quince, or chocolate) is probably the highlight of the signature experience.

F.A.W.C! EVENTS

Sample the best vintages at the Craggy Range Cellar Door

Assorted French pastries from Adoro Café

The F.A.W.C! launch party venue at Craggy Range Winery is where the action awaited. I had the privilege of attending a F.A.W.C! Electrolux Masterclass session by chef Simon Wright who hails from Auckland’s The French Café. He demonstrated how simple it was to make a moreish whitebait sandwich. He also made an en papillote fish with Jerusalem artichokes purée and ham powder, dispensing tips as he demonstrated the procedure step-by-step. After a day of serious winery hopping, we settled down at Mission Estate Winery (198 Church Road, Napier. Tel: 64/06-845-9350 www.missionestate.co.nz) for an excellent wine-pairing dinner. The five-course degustation commenced with a vanilla and citrus cured Ora salmon with asparagus, crème fraiche panna cotta and olive caviar well complemented by the 2011 Mission Reserve Sauvignon Blanc’s vibrant acidity, cutting through the richness of the salmon. Another spot-on duo that

night was the classic pairing of pinot noir (2012 Mission Reserve Central Otago Pinot Noir) with its rich, ripe tannins and duck (duck confit with shiitake mushroom wonton, crispy duck breast, sesame bok choy pineapple relish and miso broth). If you can’t secure a seat at that table (it gets sold out pretty fast), fret not. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily, with menus changing by the season. Another event that sells like hotcakes is my personal favourite: the Locavore’s Lunch at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market (www.hawkesbayfarmersmarket.co.nz). If you miss it, you can still nibble on cherries from Kirsten’s Corner, down samples of Edgebrook ciders, pop olives from the Village Press, dip crackers and breads on so many marmalades, oils and jams. I had a most satisfying experience here, munching away while striking up conversations with chatty and passionate growers or producers. I experienced a soothing tingle in my soul as I leisurely perused produce from stall to stall. For more information, please visit us at booth no.4H28 or www.newzealand.com.

Bold and Beautiful in Bangkok

Book a trip to the City of Angels and get re-acquainted through its history and enchanting culture.

Muay Thai Live

B

angkok is often associated with shopping and eating, but travelers often forget that the beautiful city has in fact more facades waiting to be explored. One of them is its deep history in which the fascinating Muay Thai culture takes root. With over 300 years of Thai boxing history, Muay Thai has become a philosophy which guides much of the Thai’s way of life. Experience it by catching “Muay Thai Live – The Legend Lives”, an exhilarating stage show featuring elaborate Muay Thai stunts weaved into a regaling tale, peppered with dashes of humour and romance. The 70-minute show runs daily at 8pm in the worldclass theatre of Warehouse 4, located at Asiatique the Riverfront. Do consider dropping by earlier too, since

Asiatique is also one of Bangkok’s latest shopping hangouts for locals and tourists alike – a perfect place to experience Bangkok’s pop-culture. What sets it apart from the usual Chatuchak market and Pratunam area is the uniqueness of the local designer products sold there. While prices may be a little higher than typical shopping spots, the quality and exclusive designs make it worth the extra dollar. Another great aspect of Bangkok’s culture is the celebration of diversity, which is reflected in the amazing Or Tor Kor market. From fresh fruit to handmade crafts, a variety of all things Thai can be found at this market, which boasts of authenticity and variety. Even Thai locals themselves frequent this market when they are looking to buy gifts of excellent quality. For a breather in between the intensive shopping sprees, head to the newly opened Art in Paradise 3D Museum, which features paintings drawn in incredibly life-like accuracy, while allowing interaction where visitors appear to be part of the pictures when viewed at specific vantage points. Six different galleries ensure trigger-happy fun for the whole family in an assortment of settings. Finally, no trip to Bangkok is complete without a succulent meal of seafood and spice. The Blue

Blue Elephant Restaurant

Elephant Restaurant serves exactly that and more. Conveniently located opposite the Surasak skytrain station, the grand mansion offers three unique menus of Thai cooking of the “past”, “today” and “tomorrow”. It tells of how Thai food culture has evolved to remain classic while exploring fresh transformations, just like the city of Bangkok itself. Or Tor Kor Market

Protecting your possessions

Added assurance comes in the form of the new Trakdot Luggage, a little device that makes a big difference

A

lthough airlines have an impressive average 98% success rate for timely baggage arrivals, there are still a whopping 26 million bags that go missing each year from international flights and airports around the world. If you’re a frequent flier, chances are high that you have experienced the unpleasant circumstance of delayed or lost luggage at least once throughout your travels. A breakthrough pioneer in low cost tracking solutions, Trakdot delivers peace of mind through their ultra-light and supremely compact Trakdot Luggage device. This non-GPS wireless locator comes with a subscription plan that delivers real time city-specific information on the whereabouts of your checked baggage, and sends this information to any mobile, Apple, Android, or SMS-capable device. The Trakdot Luggage is so simple to use, simply slip this palm-sized locater into any checked in baggage, switch it on, and enjoy your flight. The device goes to sleep after takeoff, and sends you an SMS or email alert (depending on your preference) upon landing. For families travelling together, or for those who simply wish to track more than one luggage at once, the Trakdot Luggage also offers extremely flexible combinations for tracking – link each device to multiple phones, or link multiple devices to a single alert account. For those who would like to track their baggage online, you may also do so at www.Trakdot.com with a secure log-in. Imagine this scenario: Upon landing in Singapore, you approach the baggage carousel, only to have your bags never show up. You realise with a sinking feeling that the airline has misplaced or delayed your bags. You approach the relevant airline representative, get a claim or case number, and wait anxiously for an update on the status for your luggage. You wait for hours up to days on the possibility that the airline is able to locate and return your lost bags, carrying the risk that it may simply be gone for good. With Trakdot Luggage, you can simply cut through the anxiety and get immediate information on your bags’ location. Upon landing and opening your Trakdot mobile app, you realise that your luggage has somehow wound up in Thailand – simply approach the airline representative and arrange for them to have your luggage delivered directly to your address, while you track the progress in real time as your possessions make their way to you, hassle-free.

In addition to global location services, the Trakdot Luggage device also offers more specific pinpointing of your possessions on-the-ground with the Bluetooth function within its mobile app, so you can locate your bags at the carousel. The patent-protected micro-electronics and cellular technologies employed by Trakdot offer peace of mind at remarkable value, provided added reassurance in a world of ever-increasing vulnerabilities. With successful launches all over the world, including the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand, it’s time for you to experience first hand why this extraordinary little device can make such a massive impact on your travelling experience. Trakdot Luggage is launching at the Singapore NATAS Holidays 2014 fair from 29th-31st August at booth 6H10.

Lovely Lombok

From one of the most experienced names in business and leisure travel in Indonesia, the team at WOW! Flexi-Indonesia! takes you on an exciting island adventure of spectacular marine life, lush greenery, and unique cultural history

Kuta Beach

A

n unobtrusive island in West Nusa Tenggara slightly east of Bali, Lombok offers wonderful escapes amid beautiful beaches and enchanting waterfalls. Many believe Lombok to be the unspoilt tropical paradise that Bali once was, with pristine natural landscapes and homely hospitality that have yet to be pervaded by over-commercialism.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE Dominating the skyline is the majestic Mount Rinjani, the second highest active volcano in Indonesia. A UNESCO geological park, Mount Rijani National Park is the dominant natural feature of Lombok with natural hot springs and a unique collection of flora and fauna, including fig trees, casuarina woodland, long-tailed grey macaques, cockatoos, and green hanging parrots. Choose to hike up its massive slopes, or traverse the lush rice paddies via bike. Come sunset, head towards the popular tourist town of Senggigi, a sweeping bay that offers brilliant views of

the island’s scarlet sunsets. Relax with a drink in hand and recharge with some delectable seafood at one of the restaurants overlooking the bay as you soak in the last rays of the day. Beach bunnies will love the laid-back Gili Islands, once a mecca for backpackers following the famed Banana Pancake Trail. While the landscape remains casual with countless beachside cafes and bars strewn across the shores, the area has since taken a more sophisticated turn – especially so on Gili Trawangan – and is still perfect for diving and snorkelling.

CULTURE VULTURES

Senggigi

The picturesque Kuta Beach, also known as Nyale Beach, is the central locale of the traditional ceremony of Bau Nyale, with Bau meaning “to catch” and Nyale being a type of sea worm that only surfaces once every year around. Held on the 20th day of the 10th month on the traditional Sasak Calendar, Bau Nyale is a unique festive ceremony when large crowds gather to catch Nyale and partake in festivities along many of Lombok’s finest beaches.

Although Lombok is home to varied cultures such as the Hindu Balinese, Chinese, Javanese, Bugis and Arabs, the indigenous Sasak people practice a unique form of Islam called Wektu Telu. The historic villages of Banyumulek and Sukarare produce some of the best traditional pottery urns and flasks, and hand-woven textiles respectively, while Sade and Karang Jangkong feature wonderful ancient architecture and traditions. When in Lombok, eat like the locals do. Ayam Taliwang is a spicy dish of fried or grilled chicken and vegetables smothered in a spicy chilli sauce, or sample some freshwater gourami fish and sate cooked in Sasak style.

SHOPAHOLICS ANONYMOUS

Mount Rinjani

THE OTHER KUTA

Lombok is famous for its magnificent South Sea cultured pearls, which are grown in pristine waters all over the island, and the annual Lombok- Sumbawa Pearl Festival

Ayam Taliwang

Pottery

is the perfect time to visit and pick up some beautiful pearls. Local handicrafts are also a major hit, with popular picks being hand-woven textiles like songkets and ikats. Pottery lovers can spend ages looking through the selections at Banyumulek, Penujak, and Masbagik, or shop for traditionally carved furniture at the many stores in the central city of Mataram. For those who love antique-shopping, Jl Yos Sudarso is one of the most popular areas on the island where you can find almost anything and everything, from traditional bamboo containers to bone jewellery and wood statues. Bertais Market is the biggest daily market on the island where you can pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs and spices, and local artifacts on sale.
