Autumn in my heart
The beautiful colours of autumn have inspired many love tales and Korean dramas and has drawn in tourist crowds for years
A
s we step into the second half of the year, it is the time when Korea transforms into a palette of breathtaking colours highlighting the beauty of autumn. One of the best places for viewing Korea’s autumn crimson leaves is none other than Naejangsan. As the national park in the Jeolla-do province, it has some of the finest autumn foliage in Korea. The best known temple spots are the Autumn Foliage Tunnel that leads to Naejangsa Temple, as well as the reflection of Ssanggyeru Pavilion and Baekhakbong Peak at the pond in front of Baegyangsa Temple Another destination for autumn would be the Jeonju Hanok Village, which is located in the city of Jeonju and overlaps Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong. There are over 800 traditional Korean ‘hanok’ houses. While the rest of city has been industrialised, Hanok Maeul retains its historical charms and traditions. When the autumn season is at its peak, Jeonju Hanok Village will be covered with vivid autumn colours while huge and old ginkgo tree stand majestically tall with their gorgeous yellow leaves. Besides these places, Gamcheon Cultural Village
or Taegukdo Village would be the must visit place in Busan. With pastel paints, quirky art installations and chirpy wall murals, Gamcheon Culture Village is the
kind of place to go to put a smile in your heart. It is a hub for artists and arts students who constantly create projects to be exhibited at the village. Famous for its brightly coloured terrace houses spread across the face of a steep hill looking out to the sea, Gamcheon Culture Village has been nicknamed Santorini of the East. Apart from all that, one of the activities not to be missed is the Jeju Self-Drive. There are various attractions all over the island and self-drive is probably one of the best ways to tour Jeju Island. The most popular course is 1132 Ilju Road, along which you will get to see many small villages around Jeju. The best sections are past a group of oreum (small hilly landscape caused by the volcanic activity) in Songdang and the windy road between Aewol and Jeoji. With all the beautiful coastal roads that can be explored through self-drive, one will definitely leave Jeju, bringing back the scenic views imprinted in their mind. Spellbound by Sarawak
Get away from city hustling with a profoundly serene stay in the Bario Highlands
T
he Bario Highlands, lies at an altitude of about 3,500ft above sea level, giving it a cool climate all year round. Getting here is a bit of a challenge as there’re only two means of transport – daily flight departure from Miri or by a 10-14 hour journey on a 4WD. Nevertheless, it is worth the trip to this territory belonging to the Kelabit, one of the tribes that make up the Orang Ulu community of Sarawak. This ‘land of a hundred handshakes’ is definitely welcoming to visitors. There are about thirteen villages located in and around the Bario area and the Kampung Bario Asal is a must-visit for its longhouse. A longhouse is, as its name suggests, accommodation that is long. It is also built on stilts. Bario Asal Longhouse is a 22-door all wood traditional Kelabit longhouse that houses a few families. From Bario Asal Longhouse, hire a guide to bring you around the highlands. Hikes can range from an easy day stroll to gruelling treks that can take several days. Some of the easier day treks include going to Pa Lungan on the Buffalo Trail. Pa Lungan is a peaceful place that is filled with all sorts of flora and fauna. Through jungle walks, discover wild vegetables and medicinal plants and flowers that the Kelabit have been using for centuries to cure diseases. Treks through Bario’s landscapes will uncover the
many wild birds that call Sarawak home. Whether amateur or professional bird watcher, trekkers will be able to appreciate the brightly coloured birds that fly past. Look out especially for the rhinoceros hornbill, the state bird of Sarawak. Along the way, trekkers can also opt to be taken to the ancient burial and cultural monuments, Batuh
Ritung and Batuh Perupan. Enjoy the Kelabit hospitality here for a warm dinner and participate in a Kelabit traditional dance afterwards. Particular to the Bario landscape are the monoliths, a geological formation of a massive block of stone. From Bario, hike up to Pa Umor that will then lead to Pa Umor Monolith. These monoliths are shrouded in historical, mythical tales and are truly a sight to behold. Around the Pa Umor area is also the Pa Umor Salt Springs. Located in a dense forest, this salt spring provides locals with cooking salt from the mountain. On your return to Bario, be sure to try out kayaking along the main Dapur River for an unforgettable ride. Finish your tour of Bario with a selection of Bario’s incredible organic produce. Bario rice and its sweet pineapple are the most well-known harvests. For more information, visit us at Hall 4, booth no.4101-4106

foot bath area next to an open-air theatre where performances are put on throughout the year. The full body hot springs are located further within the forest. The festival isn’t complete without a taste of some of Taiwan’s gourmet cuisine. A place that is famous for its hot spring cuisine is Yilan, where locals and tourists alike flock here to enjoy street food with views of beautiful mountain scenery. Due to the influence of the Japanese in the late 1800s to mid 1900s, there are several stores that feature well-known Japanese cuisine, such as onsen eggs that are traditionally gently poached in the hot springs, and ramen. However, if you have not had your fill of soaking in the hot springs, Yilan has a ramen shop where diners can soak their feet while enjoying bowls of thick pork bone broth. Family Trip Looking for new places to take your family to in Taiwan? Start your trip at Kaohsiung, where Air Asia flies from Kuala Lumpur directly three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Kaohsiung has been a popular travel destination of late as it offers a multitude of attractions, such as the Pier-2 Art Center that was once an abandoned warehouse. Today, it is the place for artists to set up impressive and thought-provoking installations. Many of these installations are colourful and playful, adding to the brightness of the area. A trip to Kaohsiung is not complete without a visit to a night market. In this town, Ruifeng Night Market is one of the biggest. Traditional street food line the narrow streets and can range from anything like curry fishballs to rice-stuffed chicken. Lately, international foods, like sushi have been making their way to these night markets as well. Take a leisurely 2-hour drive down south towards Pingtung County to the National Museum of Marine

mineral content water that can be a great curative to many different ailments.Throughout Taiwan, you will be able to find a variety of hot springs and all of them are set in a peaceful, quiet location to provide a moment’s respite to the tired traveller. Some of the most popular hot springs can be easily accessed from Taipei. Beitou, which is accessible from Taipei via a direct subway ride away, is famous for its Beitou Hot Springs. Enjoy the milky-white sulphurous waters that are said to be effective in healing chronic skin diseases. This area is also famed for the restored Beitou Hot Springs Museum that features architectural styles influenced by the Japanese. From Beitou, take a short bus ride to Yangmingshan where the Yangmingshan Hot Springs are located. The volcanic landscape here brings immediate relaxation as you enjoy the hot spring water that has been enriched with skin-soothing minerals. Outside of the Taipei area are also some other famous hot springs. In Taitung, Zhiben Hot Springs is one of the more well-known ones. The natural landscape is inviting and the clear waters here hold alkali properties that are great for regulating body pH levels. The town of Jiaoxi in Yilan County is also another popular hot spring destination. Jiaoxi Hot Springs Park is open 24 hours a day and features an extensive

Biology & Aquarium. While the main facilities here are meant for marine biological research, there are a number of exciting exhibits that will thrill any visitor. Start with the Waters of Taiwan exhibit that brings visitors across the different water geographies of Taiwan, including high mountain streams and reservoirs. Then there is the Coral Reef Previews, where different coral reef tanks are on display. Begin your journey at the surface of the ocean then move on down to the reef wall and the bottom of the sea. Finally, end the exhibitions at Waters of the World. The highlight of this exhibit is the display of organisms from millions of years ago, made even more spectacular with its 3D visual effects. Move on south towards Hengchun Old City. The town is where you’ll be able to find some of Taiwan’s most valuable cultural treasures and heritages and where its old fortress walls still stand. The old city is also the entrance to Kenting National Park. The park has a diverse scenery that is divided by the Hengchun Longitudinal Valley Plain, creating many spaces just waiting to be explored. Coral sea cliffs run along the west coast and mountains stand tall in the north. Over in the south are coral tablelands and foothills and in the east is the Longlyuantan Lake and limestone caves. Water activities abound nearer the coastal areas, such as surfing, jetskiing and scuba diving. Older ones will enjoy the Kenting Main Strip that is very much like a traditional Taiwanese night market. Fruit Picking Due to the temperate climate of Taiwan, many fruit varieties are available year round. Many fruit farms are open when their fruit is in season for locals and tourists to pick their own fresh fruits. Nothing beats tasting the sweetness of your own hard labour. • Strawberries Strawberries are mainly grown in the months from December to April in the Dahu District of Miaoli. After picking your strawberries, any leftovers can be made into freshly churned ice cream. These frozen treats are creamy and have a sweet natural taste. • Persimmon Persimmon, or Sharon fruit, is ripe for picking from September to November. These fruits grow in a few areas, particularly in Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung and Jiayi areas. There are two major varieties: the acidic

and the sweet. The acidic ones are larger in size and become crisp and crunchy when ripe with a tangy taste. The sweeter ones are smaller and softer and often require ripening after being plucked. • Guava While guava is normally available year round, peak picking season is from September to November. If visiting Kaohsiung, drop by the Yenchao area that is most famous for this tropical fruit. The most sought after variety is the pearl guava that is crunchy and sweet and favoured by the locals. • Tomato These savoury fruits are best grown in a warm and dry climate, which makes the peak season for the tomato all year round! From fall to winter, it is best to harvest tomatoes in the south central area and in the summer, head to the chilly mountain areas in central Taiwan. Many tomato varieties are grown in the same farms and include the native large tomato, cherry tomato and momotaro tomato among others.

Two Turkish Sites Added To The UNESCO’s 2015 World Heritage List
• Two new UNESCO sites: The ancient Ephesus city and the Diyarbakır Fortress and Hevsel Gardens • Makes up a total of 15 Turkish sites inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List • Turkey to host next year’s UNESCO meeting in Istanbul
T
he ancient city of Ephesus and the historic Diyarbakır Fortress and Hevsel Gardens were recently inaugurated as cultural properties in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Heritage List at the recent 39th session of the World Heritage Committee. The UNESCO World Heritage List is committed to drive efforts in protection and conservation of natural and cultural heritage sites around the world. The Committee selects the entries based on the universal value the site brings and each site must meet at least one out of the ten criteria. This year’s addition of the two sites in Turkey joins 13 other cultural assets that makes up a total of 15 Turkish sites that are inscribed on the reputable list. “We are honoured to receive such a prestigious recognition from UNESCO that acknowledges and reveres the cultural and historical heritage as well as the natural beauty of Turkey, putting Turkey on a global pedestal. It is a double celebration for the nation as we celebrate the good news and commemorate the thirtieth anniversary since Turkey’s first site was inscribed to the World Heritage List in 1985,” said Kaan YILMAZ, Attaché in Turkey Embassy Tourism and Information Office, Malaysia. Situated in Western Turkey in izmir, Ephesus is a site of global cultural heritage that was finally added to the list after 21 years. The city draws two million local and
international visitors annually and dates back to 6,000 B.C. Throughout history, the city functioned as a vital Roman port city as well as a cultural and commercial hub. Today, it is home to many magnificent structures including the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the House of the Virgin Mary, and even one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Temple of Artemis. While in the Southeastern of Turkey, the fortified Diyarbakır is famed for its city walls and the 8,000 year old Hevsel Gardens. The defensive Diyarbakır Fortress is 5.8km long with numerous towers and gates that was built in 349 A.D. Inscriptions written in the Hellenic, Latin, Syriac, Armenian and Arabic languages are also found on the walls which showcase the interlacing of civilisations in Anatolia. Flowing down from the ancient walls, the fertile lands of the Hevsel Gardens serve as an important green link between the fortress and the Tigris River valley that supplies food and water to the city. The first Turkish landscapes to enter the UNESCO World Heritage List 30 years ago were the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, the Great Mosque and Hospital of Divrigi, and various historic areas of Istanbul. Other Turkish UNESCO sites include the astounding Nemrut Dag (1987), the cotton candy beauty of Hierapolis-Pamukkale (1988), the Archaeological Site of Troy (1998), and many more.
About Turkey Tourism Turkey is, above anything else, a huge openair museum, a repository of all the civilizations nurtured by the soils of Anatolia. Recently, a new field of tourism has opened up: health tourism. The country is in fact rich with hot springs, healing waters and healing muds. For centuries, Turkey has also been a crossroads of religions, not only of Islam and Christianity, but also of many others now forgotten by history. Many religious devotees can find a site, a shrine, a monument, a tomb or a ruin connected with their faith or belief. To know more about Turkey, please visit our webpage http://turkeytourism.com.my/. The tentative UNESCO list for Turkey currently stands at 60 submitted properties from across the country. It was also recently announced that the 40th session of the Committee in 2016 will be hosted by Turkey and fittingly held in the historical city of Istanbul from 10th–20th July 2016. Don’t Leave Home Without It! Often overlooked, travel insurance is an essential part of any trip and provides valuable safeguard in the event of unexpected incidents during your travels
T
he anticipation of a holiday is one of the best things about it. The knowledge that you will soon be on your dream vacation in your destination of choice is hard to beat. But what if things go wrong? What if your luggage gets lost or your flight is delayed. Many travellers are not likely to take this into account, perhaps because they feel that negative thoughts might affect the feel-good factor of holidays. But the truth is just the opposite: planning for the worst will ensure your travel is hassle free and will provide you with peace of mind. Why Buy Travel Insurance? Travel insurance protects a traveller’s investment in their journey and ensures that they are able to get the appropriate assistance should things go wrong. Not every trip goes completely smoothly. Some of the common inconveniences that occur are flight delays; loss of luggage and with them, your medication; stolen passports and wallets. Accidents overseas can also happen which can require urgent medical attention and treatment. All these unforeseen events can be covered with the right insurance policy. You can get medical assistance whilst overseas, ensuring that you are getting the right treatment in the right hospital as well as financial protection to cover the medical bills. If necessary, emergency assistance and costs associated are also covered to arrange and bring you home to Malaysia. If you are hesitating over purchasing travel insurance, ask yourself the following questions: - Can I afford the financial risk of losing my deposits or incurring additional cancellation charges if something goes wrong before I travel due to illness, weather, or other unforeseen circumstances? - If I have to cut my trip short because of an emergency, can I afford the cost of a return airline trip home? - Does my health insurance cover me away from home and in foreign countries if I become ill or am injured while travelling? - If I am in a foreign country, and in need of urgent medical treatment, would I know which hospital to go to or how to organise my return journey home?
- If my luggage is lost or if I have to spend an extra night due to weather-related problems, am I prepared to pay for the extra meals and lodging? If you answered ‘No’ to any of the above questions, chances are that travel insurance may be a wise investment. By purchasing travel insurance, you can end up saving a lot of money. Choosing The Right Policy Picking the right policy to purchase is important and challenging at the same time. Comprehensive medical coverage is the most essential component. In the event of serious injury or illness, insurance pay outs can run into hundreds of thousands of Ringgit. Most importantly, you should opt for one from a trusted company that offers a wide range of benefits, 24-hour emergency assistance globally as well as high coverage for medical expenses. This article is contributed by ACE Jerneh Insurance Berhad. Reef Magic Cruises
Surfers Paradise
Queensland Calling Non-stop action is an understatement in this Australian state. Visit Brisbane, Cairns and Gold Coast for jam-packed fun
B
lessed with year-round sunshine and a mild winter, Queensland is where Australia shines. This vast state that occupies Australia’s northeast is vibrant and sees sunshine 300 days a year, earning themselves the name, ‘the Sunshine State’. For a taste of the excitement Queensland has to offer, start with a visit to the capital, Brisbane, before making your way down Queensland’s beautiful coastline that stretches from Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef in the north to the pristine beaches of Gold Coast in the south. Brisbane The capital of Queensland is youthful and energetic. Brisbane, or ‘Brizzy’, as the locals call it, is a booming river town that has all the makings of a metropolitan goldmine. Known for its year-round cool climate, Brisbane is a haven for outdoor activities and al fresco dining. The active Brisbanites enjoy kayaking and rock climbing before heading down to one of the numerous riverside bistros and fine dining restaurants for a meal and a good cup of coffee. From the diners, make your way down the river for many of Brisbane’s attractions. The edgy art scene of Brisbane takes centre stage at the riverside Queensland Gallery of Modern Art that has a collection of more than 16,000 works of art. Just across the river is also the Museum of Brisbane, located on top of the restored Brisbane City Hall. Exhibits here include a collection of artefacts donated by Brisbanites, giving visitors a glimpse of Brisbane in the past. Families with younger children looking for activities near Brisbane can make their way to the Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort, one of the rare places where dolphins swim regularly to shore to “meet” people. Hand-feed these wondrous
mammals, and enjoy the rest of the resort’s activities, including scenic helicopter rides and eco-marine cruises. Cairns For more wildlife and nature experiences, head over to Cairns, the gateway to two UNESCO Heritage Sites, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system and home to more than 1,500 species of fish and 30 species of sea mammals. Once here, visitors can dive or snorkel to discover one of the world’s greatest wonders. For those who prefer to keep dry, there are other means of exploration – semi-submersible and glass-bottom vessels, helmet dives and underwater scooters are fun alternatives to get to the bottom of the ocean. Right next to the Great Barrier Reef is the Daintree Rainforest. Go deep into the forest on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for a bird’s eye view of the canopy. Otherwise, opt for a ride on the 100-year-old Kuranda Scenic Railway that delves through 15 tunnels and goes over 40 bridges. Expect to witness sweeping views such as the Barron River Falls. Cairns is also the place to learn about aboriginal culture. Experience the culture of the indigenous people at the award-winning Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. Learn how to play the didgeridoo, throw a boomerang, and learn about bush medicines and catch dance performances.

ndonesia is blessed with the most diverse landscape, from fertile ricelands on Java and Bali to the luxuriant rainforests of Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, to the savannah grasslands of the Nusatenggara islands to snow-capped peaks of West Papua. Her wildlife ranges from the prehistoric giant Komodo lizard to the Orang Utan and the Java rhino, to the Sulawesi anoa dwarf buffalos, to birds with exquisite plumage like the cockatoo and the bird of paradise. This is also the habitat of the Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower, wild orchids, an amazing variety of spices, and aromatic hardwood and a large variety of fruit trees. Underwater, scientists have found in North Sulawesi the prehistoric coelacanth fish, a “living fossil” fish, predating the dinosaurs some 400 million years ago, while whales migrate yearly through these waters from the South Pole. Here are hundreds of species of colourful coral and tropical fish to admire. Culturally, Indonesia fascinates with her rich diversity of ancient temples, music, ranging from the
traditional to modern pop, dances, rituals and ways of life, changing from island to island, from region to region. Yet everywhere, visitors feel welcomed with the warm, gracious innate friendliness of the Indonesian people that is not easily forgotten. THE DESTINATIONS TO EXPLORE AND THE LODGING TO STAY Our wide choices of destinations includes the Majestic Borobudur Temple – a UNESCO World’s Heritage site in JOGJAKARTA, the magnificent scenery of “Kawah Putih” – the White Crater and its unique village of Ranca Upas in BANDUNG West Java, wild-dolphin searching in the Northern Coast of BALI, and natural wonders on LOMBOK Island.
