RIGHT: Katrina WarfordThompson (right) – Best Dressed Lady 2016 – with Laura Mathewson, owner of Victoria House LEFT: Katrina’s winning outfit

Are you ready for the style stakes? AS THE FASHION-CONSCIOUS GEAR UP TO MAKE AN IMPRESSION AT THIS YEAR’S ST LEGER FESTIVAL, WE’RE ON THE HUNT THE MOST STYLISH RACEGOERS. ith the William Hill St Leger Festival just around the corner, fashionistas across the region will be preparing their best outfits in preparation for one of the most prestigious events in the horse racing calendar. Eastside ladies who have bought their outfits from local, independent boutiques will also be preparing to battle it out for the title of Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2017, and a prize worth £100s. Last year’s winner, Katrina WarfordThompson of Wadworth, wore a stunning monochrome Isabella dress from Victoria House, Armthorpe, teamed with black heels and a black and white fascinator by Funky Fascinators, who supply Victoria House. Katrina works in the bridal department at Victoria House, so was in the perfect place to find her eye-catching outfit. Speaking after

W

16 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

her win last year, Katrina said: “Buying a dress at independent boutiques helps local businesspeople, plus, as a customer, you are getting a dress that is unique, you’re not going to see everyone else wearing it. Victoria House dresses are really classy and elegant and suitable for more than one occasion.” Not only does the lady wearing the dress win, but the boutique that sells the victorious dress will win the coveted Eastside Best Boutique 2017 award. With so many beautiful boutiques in the region, and only a few weeks until the St Leger Festival, there is no better time to check out what is on offer at these independent businesses. Not only are their staff friendly and their clothes beautiful, but if you wear one of their outfits to St Leger you could be Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2017.

HOW TO ENTER:

Take a photograph of yourself in your race day outfit and, along with your name and the name of the boutique you bought it from, email terri.moore@rmcmedia.co.uk, upload it to Eastside’s Facebook page, or tweet it to @EastsideRMC. A shortlist will be chosen from these entries, which will appear in the October issue, and it will be down to our readers to vote for their favourite in our online poll. The winner, who will receive a prize worth £100s, will be revealed in our November edition.

COLOSSEO OFFERS AN AUTHENTIC DINING EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF DONCASTER.

Savour the taste of Italy olosseo is a unique and relaxing eatery on a grand scale, offering an impressive choice for lovers of classic and contemporary Italian cuisine. With a fresh new approach to classic delights and firm favourites, it’s attracting customers new and old to the heart of Doncaster. In 2015, Colosseo underwent an impressive refurbishment from a run-down pub to a traditional authentic Italian restaurant. Oozing with charm and cosiness and with a feature brick wall, sculptures and more traditional Roman artwork, Colosseo combines rustic and modern décor with simplicity and ease, alongside an impressive assortment of tempting drinks and food. The contemporary, intimate interior is reminiscent of an Italian home, giving diners a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy their meal and, with the open kitchen, guests can experience the thrill of watching mouth-watering dishes being prepared with skill and panache. With an ethos of bringing people together, Colosseo has something to suit all tastes. While waiting for your table, pull up a chair at the bar and enjoy a drink or two. There is a generous range of wines, champagne, spirits, lagers

C

and draft beers as well as an imaginative cocktail menu. Relax and enjoy a memorable meal from a menu that boasts an eclectic mix of starters from pork ribs in a spicy sweet and sour sauce (Costolette di Maiale) to king prawns cooked in peppers, spring onion, chilli, garlic and white wine (Gamberoni alla Portoghese). For those looking for a lighter option, try goat’s cheese cooked with a flat cap mushroom, served on a bed of flat rocket salad, garnished with a balsamic glaze (Insalate Pecorino) or sample the chef ’s special soup of the day. When it comes to main dishes, Colosseo know what they are doing as the experienced

chefs use fresh locally sourced ingredients in all their cooking. If you’re a seafood lover, then sample the Mare alla Ella, made up of black spaghetti and a host of seafood including baby prawns, muscles, pan-fried scallops and king prawns served in a thick tomato garlic sauce. Another favourite is the Pollo con Risotto, a chicken breast on top of risotto cooked with tomato, chilli, piccante sausage, peas and garlic. For something classically simple there is also an impressive selection of home-made pizzas including calzones. Colosseo offers free parking and regularly takes booking for small groups and parties as well as catering for larger functions including weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and leaving parties. The team at Colosseo provides an efficient, friendly service along with top quality food and are accommodating when it comes to dietary requirements. So pull up and seat, soak in the stunning interior and get to work on sampling some of Colosseo’s fantastic offerings.

STYLISTS HIT THE ROAD WHEN THE MODELS AT BRITAIN’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS FASHION EVENTS NEED THEIR HAIR STYLING, THE TEAM FROM SAKS DONCASTER IS READY TO GO . . .

28 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Joey Essex said hello

he team from Saks Doncaster have been out and about styling the hair and make-up of fashionistas at some of the country’s biggest fashion events. Saks Doncaster stylists are no strangers to backstage styling. Salon owner Paul Calladine is a member of the Saks Art Team, the creatives called upon for shoots and shows who set the standards for hair in all of the brand’s salons. Paul also represents Saks providing training to hair professionals overseas.

styling models, dancers and celebrities. Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Lang, TOWIE’s Joey Essex and presenter Rick Edwards all popped in to visit the backstage salon. One trend that was incredibly popular at Clothes Show Live was accessorising hair with beautiful jewellery, whether that be big pieces of bling or more subtle jewels. The Saks team made heads sparkle and shine, and hope to bring the trend back to the Doncaster salon just in time for party season.

CLOTHES SHOW LIVE

LONDON FASHION WEEK

The team from the hair and beauty salon were backstage at Clothes Show Live, Birmingham, working in the Alcatel Onetouch Fashion Theatre and running the Saks Pamper Lounge feature for the second year running. Becky Calladine, owner of Saks Doncaster, said: “We’ve been the partner of choice for hair backstage for four years. Styling back-toback shows over five days we have to be right on the ball. This year our stylists had more of a challenge with our Hair Rings Show Look which also created a buzz on the Saks Pamper Lounge – a bit trickier to create but of course our stylists rose to the occasion.” The Saks team were brushing shoulders with the stars throughout Clothes Show Live,

It was a busy season for Saks Doncaster, with Izzy Britain, one of the salon’s creative stylists, being selected to be part of the Saks London Fashion Week team. Izzy was chosen by Saks UK’s creative director Luke Pluckrose to be part of his team for On Off, London Fashion Week's exciting showcase for emerging talent. Luke had been asked by L'Oréal Professional to select some of the best Saks stylists from around the UK to form the backstage team for the shows. If you would like to have your hair transformed by Saks Doncaster stylists, pop into their spacious High Street salon and have a chat with their friendly, award-winning team.

Dear Liz I am a 30-year-old woman, in a committed relationship and we are trying for a baby. We have been trying for around a year and nothing seems to be happening. My partner and myself are beginning to get very stressed and anxious, wondering if there is something the matter with one of us. Can you suggest any complementary treatments that may be of help?

Michelle, Retford Liz replies: There are many things you can do to help fertility. Reflexology is a very good therapy to help with fertility as described in this month’s article. Massage can also be very useful using lymphatic drainage massage techniques to release congestion, gentle work around the pelvis area is also useful and gentle stretches and mobilisations around the pelvic area again can help. Visualisations and hypnotherapy can also help women connect with different phases of their cycle, supporting energy levels and reducing stress. It will need to be different with different clients but an example would be to imagine the egg cell maturing, or visualising fertilisation etc. You would need to have a consultation with the practitioner to see which intervention would be most suitable for you.

All of the above are available with me @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry.

IT’S A GIN THING… OUR TASTERS TACKLE THE G&T TASTE TEST TO BRING YOU THE BEST OF THE BUNCH. BY HANNAH SANDERS. ucked away in the spectacular surrounding countryside of Cadeby, is one of the area’s best kept secrets – The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant. Not only does this hidden gem magic up some of the best in gastro fare, but they also offer a staggering whisky selection, as well as local real ales and continental craft beers. Recently, they’ve further added to their offerings, launching an extensive gin menu featuring 50 of the best gins from across the globe. And Eastside was lucky enough to be invited along to put some of their best sellers to the test. The judges were tasked with blind tasting a selection of 14 gins in three different categories – London Dry gins, Sloe gins and Flavour Profile gins – ultimately crowning an overall winner in each. The tasters were asked not only to select their favourite, but to score on taste, colour, appearance and the effects of the garnishes, among other qualities. To conceal any clues, each of the gins were disguised in wooden boxes, kindly hand-made by Cadeby’s carpenter Luke, so our tasters were truly in the dark about what they were sipping. Tree and the gins from each individual gin house. The Cadeby also provided suitably luxurious surroundings for the tasters in The Old Granary Room. The evening began with phase one: six London dry gins, with the tasters first sampling Fifty Pounds. For Eastside’s Rachel Martin it was a good start: “This is a great introductory gin, very smooth and easy sipping.” But for Alison Lomax it wasn’t quite the perfect mix: “It was perhaps too flavoursome for a G&T but it would happily stand up in a martini on the rocks.” Not quite able to grab the top spot, Monkey 47 was still a firm favourite with the

tasters. “This is everything a gin should be smooth, rich and warm on the tongue,” said Oliver McCall. Taking the top spot was Masons Dry Yorkshire Gin. Distilled in the North Yorkshire town of Bedale, it’s no wonder our tasters favoured the taste of their region. “This gin is smooth but big on taste, you get some heat from the botanicals, which then reveals the juniper nose, before all the flavours harmonise,” said Ian Allgood. After the winners were revealed, tasters were treated to a selection of the Cadeby’s finest platters on the private patio, including the Cadeby board, Plato Espanol and seafood platter, to keep stomachs lined ahead of the

next phase – sloe gin. Coming in third was Sipsmith sloe gin 2015, which according to Amanda Gleadall was bursting with flavour: “You really pick up the punchy notes of the currants, this would be an ideal winter drink.” However it wasn’t quite to Sara Williamsom’s taste: “This gin is a tad too heavy on the sweetness, maybe it would work well in a cocktail.” Soaring into first place was another of Yorkshire’s finest – Sloemotion, which is made in exactly the same way as it was in the 18th century, with the fruit steeped in gin and sugar and left to mature. Ruby red in colour, it was a firm favourite for all of the tasters especially Rachel: “Great for sipping, this gin really delivers a strong burst of sloes first, followed by a little sourness, and then a long, smooth finish.” The tasters moved swiftly on to phase three, the flavour profile gins, in which Masons lavender edition gin, shone through. For Ian Allgood this would be his go-to drink on a night out: “This is a really classy gin, you get wafts of cardamom and lavender from the get-go, and when you add the tonic it brings a little elderflower to the party.” The final winner of the night was Monkey 47 sloe gin, served with a Sicilian lemon tonic and twists of lemon zest. Oliver, who now considers Monkey 47 his gin of choice says: “The flavours in this gin are released in the vapour alone, the nose is a zesty, citrus freshness which leads to a sweet finish.” So there it is, you now know what to choose when you’re deliberating over your next glass of mother’s ruin.

To conceal any clues, each of the gins were disguised in wooden boxes, kindly handmade by Cadeby’s carpenter Luke, so our tasters were truly in the dark about what they were sipping.

Eastside would like to thank The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant for hosting the fabulous evening and serving a delicious range of platters to accompany the gin. We’d also like to thank Fever Tree for providing the evening’s tonics. Little gem A NEW A LA CARTE MENU PROVIDED THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR CHRIS WILSON TO RETURN TO CAVIARS. f you’re searching for a fine dining experience, but don’t care for the stuffed-shirt atmosphere that often accompanies it, Caviars in Bawtry might just have the perfect solution. This cosy restaurant and wine bar has built a richly deserved reputation over the last few years for consistently excellent cooking in a relaxed setting. There have been some significant changes recently with Stuart Johnson joining the team as front of house manager and Billy Frost, executive head chef, introducing a new a la carte menu. But it was clear on my latest visit that the key components that I have come to appreciate about Caviars – classical cooking with a modern bistro edge, a cracking wine list and friendly, courteous service – remain to the fore. Stepping off Swan Street into the entrance, you head directly into a softly lit wine bar, perfect to relax over a drink and ponder a small menu (six starters, six mains, six desserts) that still contains enough variety to demand serious consideration. We started with pan-seared scallops (£10.50), sparkling fresh and cooked just so, with good caramelisation on the outside and succulent white flesh within. Accompanied by florets of spiced tempura cauliflower, golden raisin purée and crispy capers, this was a delicious twist on a standard starter. A large

I

glass of zesty Fernlands Sauvignon Blanc (£7.95) proved to be the ideal partner. Equally impressive was the pork terrine (£6.95), which was moist and meaty, served with compressed apple, black pudding crumb and golden raisin chutney. A very easy drinking bottle of Flor de Fuego Cabernet Sauvignon (£17.95) was another good match and stayed with us through the main courses too. If conversation ever dips during dinner at Caviars (no chance for me, I was meeting an old friend and there was a lot of catching up to do) there’s always the option of watching the chefs grafting in the open kitchen; it’s always good fun to see others work hard while you relax. Both our main courses were a triumph of contrasting textures and tastes. My fillet of hake (£16.95) came away from the crispy skin in beautiful pure white flakes as it sat on a luxurious wedge of potato and saffron terrine. With red pepper and chorizo purée, baby courgettes and clams to complete the picture this was a light yet flavoursome dish to linger over. Across the table a generous slab of belly pork (£16.95), very tender and comforting, was a real treat. With black pudding mash, baby vegetables, wild mushroom sauce and a king scallop, all was good. We shared a bowl of seasonal vegetables from Joe’s of Retford (£2.95). For dessert the lemon tart (£6.75) was one

of the best I’d tasted – a suitably sharp citrus filling on a thin, crisp base with a light raspberry meringue topping. Mixed red berries and raspberry sorbet were an ideal accompaniment. My friend does not have much of a sweet tooth but the Bawtry Cheese Cave Cheese Board (£7.50) with chutney, grapes and crackers was a generous selection, highlights including the Lincolnshire Poacher and Rhuby Crumble (a Wensleydale blended with Yorkshire rhubarb and vanilla). A glass of LBV Port (£3) proved the perfect companion. The lunchtime menu at Caviars is also becoming increasingly popular. It’s good to know, but don’t miss out on the particular delights of a long, leisurely dinner in this little gem of a restaurant. Big success: Liaqat Ali

Secret of success THE COMMITMENT TO QUALITY INDIAN CUISINE IS WHAT HAS KEPT AAGRAH AT THE TOP OF ITS GAME FOR 21 YEARS , SAYS CHRIS WILSON. hen 16-year-old Liaqat Ali was drafted in to help out in the kitchen for the opening night of a new family restaurant in Shipley in 1977, he had no idea that he was getting in on the start of something very big. Forty years down the line, as executive chef and director of one of the biggest and most successful family businesses in Yorkshire, he knows better. There are now 13 Aagrah restaurants spread across the county, all run by family members, and the Woodlands, Doncaster, branch of this thriving enterprise, which celebrated its own 21st anniversary this year, is going from strength to strength. The most recent innovation is a new private dining room, beautifully furnished and perfect for family celebrations and business conferences. But behind all that business acumen it’s the unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding Indian cuisine, with customer service to match, that keeps the Aagrah success story going strong. We dined on a Monday night at the start of the school summer holidays... the recipe for a quiet night in many restaurants across the region. But with the big value buffet menu (available Sundays and Mondays) helping to fill a number of large tables, the car park was full and the atmosphere decidedly buzzy. The a la carte menu is also available on

W

buffet nights, and it was from this that we chose our dishes. Popadoms (90p each) and the pickle tray (£2.50) were predictably excellent; less predictable was the excellent wine list which included a lively dry, floral Chardonnay/Gewürztraminer blend (£5.90 large glass), the perfect chilled white to accompany spicy food. The light, more-ish Lal Toofan beer (£3.30 a pint) was also most refreshing. The Aagrah special tandoori mix for two (£9.50) brought a gorgeous mix of seekh kebab, lamb chops, chicken tikka and fish masala, served on a sizzling platter of peppers and onions. All the components were tender and packed with flavour, but something was missing. Can any visit to an Indian restaurant really be complete without sampling the onion bhajis? You know the answer, and the Aagrah version (£3.50), disc-shaped rather than round, is spicier, crisper and less dense than most. Don’t miss out. The menu is big so we decided to be adventurous and sample main dishes from two distinct regions. Jhinga Hyderabadi (£13.95) was a rich and spicy prawn dish in a cream and yoghurt sauce packed with fresh ginger, garlic, cardamom and cloves. Totally delicious. Our second main, Murg Saag from the Kashmiri region, combined juicy chunks of chicken breast with spinach, onions, garlic, ginger, coriander, bay leaf and cinnamon juice. Another winner.

Side dishes are a key component in any great Indian meal and once again the standard was superlative. Matar paneer (£4.50), an indulgent blend of spicy cured cheese and peas, was delicious and a plain nan (£2.60) and saffron lemon rice (£2.70) were ideal soaker-uppers. We weren’t finished yet. Normally I’d never bother with a sweet course in an Indian restaurant but Aagrah stands out for actually bothering to produce traditional desserts. I love kulfi (£3.95), the fragrant Indian icecream flavoured with cardamom and condensed milk, and this, along with gulab jaman fusion (£3.95), a light sponge-style pudding made with semolina and saffron, took the edge off our spicy feast in some style. Kirsty works as a chef at OTTO Bar and Kitchen – a mecca for wine and coffee lovers. But there’s much more to the industrialinspired venue than some of the finest beverages. “We serve a selection of freshly prepared food ranging from a traditional English breakfast, to dishes with a more continental or extravagant twist,” she says. “Our lunch menu consists of range of handmade sandwiches, salads, grazing bowls, and a range of platters constructed from the finest ingredients and locally-sourced produce. We also serve a range of cakes and nibbles, which are prepared daily on the premises.” Though she confesses that being a chef is ‘not a walk in the park”, nothing gives her more satisfaction. “I enjoy being creative and experimental. However, more than anything, I take great satisfaction from knowing our customers enjoy and appreciate the food we serve, and the dishes we create.”

Daniel is head chef at The Town House Bar & Restaurant in Bawtry. Along with his dedicated team, he serves British dishes with a twist, made with fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant is also a member of Deliciously Yorkshire – an organisation which celebrates some of the most talented artisan producers, farm shops, diverse delis, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants and hotels. The restaurant strives to use local produce where ever possible. His signature dish is a twice-baked Yellison Farm Yorkshire goat’s cheese soufflé with Wye Valley asparagus wrapped in smoked salmon. The most satisfying part of his job, is making their customers happy. “I enjoy making people’s day with a plate of food. No matter who you are, everybody is a foodie!” he says. “My advice to other aspiring chefs is to know the basics and get ready to work hard.”

Caz has been head chef at the restaurant in The Crown Hotel for 23 years. She creates traditional dishes with a modern twist for their guests including full Yorkshire breakfasts, brunches and mains from their a la carte menu all day every day, except Sunday, when they serve Sunday lunch and Sunday a la carte menus. Her signature dish is a 30-day matured 20oz TBone steak, which has proven very popular with their customers. This is served with skin-on fries, beer battered onion rings, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and a sauce of your choice. Though the food industry can be a tough and tiring place, she advises other aspiring chefs to respect their workmates. “Follow your dream, have goals and be prepared to work your bottom off! Always treat people how you would want to be treated, and respect your staff if you want them to respect you.”

Michael has been a chef at The Old Weighing Room at Doncaster Racecourse since the restaurant opened in April 2014, first as a sous chef, before progressing to head chef in July 2016. He has been working at the racecourse itself since August 2007, where we started as a chef de partie. He has catered everything from a buffet for a small meeting of ten people, to a three-course lunch for 1,500 people. Michael cooks a variety of quality British dishes, but his favourite thing to make is pastries. “I wouldn’t say that I have a signature dish, but I always have a favourite from each menu,” he adds. “My current favourite is our gin, rhubarb and ginger cured salmon. It looks so good and tastes even better! “Becoming a successful chef doesn’t happen overnight. Cooking at home is completely different to cooking on demand for a restaurant full of customers.”

Charlene is a chef at The Counting Hou23, an old bank-turned-wine bar and restaurant serving everything from afternoon teas to tapas dishes, light meals and mains such as pizzas. However, she considers tapas to be her signature style. Opened this year, the business was proudly launched by Doncaster Conferences Catering and Events Limited. Using locally-sourced ingredients and working with local suppliers are important aspects to the restaurant’s concept. Charlene’s advice to other aspiring chefs is to “work hard, enjoy what you do and take every opportunity given to you.”

Outstanding OTTO FINE WINE, GREAT FOOD. RACHEL MARTIN ENJOYS A CLASSY NIGHT OUT IN SPROTBOROUGH. e waltzed into OTTO on a Tuesday evening to find the place fizzing with frivolity; several tables had been pushed together to accommodate a group of businessmen clad in smart suits, pink balloons bobbed above a six-top of women and couples locked eyes and clinked glasses as if nobody else was around. The classically British weather (howling gales and pouring rain) meant we weren’t able to enjoy, as intended, a spot of al fresco dining. So we took our places at one of the cork-topped tables at the far end of the dining room, opposite an impressive feature wall showcasing over 200 bottles, and once we were settled, perused to extensive drinks menu. The wine list is a tome of good taste, and if your vinous vocabulary is a little rusty, there’s no shame in seeking guidance from the bar. In fact, handing over the reins to general manager Mark Illsley was the best decision we made; a stunning glass of Capilla de Barro Malbec Argentina (£8.25) landed in front of me, delivering a wave of ripe, fresh black fruit and mocha. Our starter of fresh OTTO bread and balsamic oil (£2.25) was pillowy soft and a delight to look at. Served oven-warm (as any

W

bread should be), tearing into the slightly yeasty interior was one heck of a joy. Hats off to head chef Kirsty Cayton for getting the baking spot-on. From the big plate combos, my partner’s sesame chicken skewers, served with green beans in garlic, and halloumi fries, was perfect for intermittent grazing. Every component of the plate displayed terrific flavours that sang together. The chicken, in particular, was tender with a crisp rind and sprinkled with sesame seeds - the poultry paired in complete harmony with the satay sauce dip. My perfectly baked camembert, paired with chutney, roasted broccoli, toasted almonds and sweet potato fries (£10.50), was beautifully plated. The cheese, in all its oozy, gooey glory, came in its own little cocotte. Deeply flavoured, it was the very essence of rich and earthy, with a subtle hit of chalkiness. Puddings didn’t disappoint either. We shared the decadent chocolate brownie, stuffed dough ball and peanut ice cream (£4.50) and rhubarb and ginger upside down cheesecake (£4.25), with only one clash of forks over an extra-charred nubbin of shimmering pink rhubarb. If you’re not there for the full sit-down dining experience, that’s a-ok. You can grab a

table down on the bar level, enjoy some exceptional beverages by the glass and let the view into the buzzy, dining room tempt you to order up some snacks, like olives (£2.75) or house tortillas (1.75). Or maybe just pine after whatever they’re displaying on the bar top, sitting right in your sight line. Oh sweet torture, thy name is chocolate cake. If you’re looking for a destination for your next date night, OTTO is it. I could easily imaging sitting on the cosy patio, overlooking Sprotbrough church and gardens, sharing a platter as the wine and conversation flow. Don’t hold off until Friday night either. This is the kind of elegant venue that gives midweek drinks a high-class sheen. OTTO Kitchen & Wine Bar Main Street, Sprotbrough, DN5 7RF Tel: 01302 572679

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS

The big prize awaits THE 2017 EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS HAS A NEW VENUE, WHICH MEANS YOU CAN NOT ONLY VOTE, BUT YOU CAN BE THERE TOO.

Book early To secure your place at the Eastside Restaurant Awards Dinner, book now. A table for ten costs £400, individual places are £50 per head. Contact Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore at terri.moore@rmcmedia.co.uk

CAST YOUR VOTE ive years ago we decided to test the water and see if there was an appetite in the Eastside region for a restaurant awards night. Well, we know the answer to that one. Our first event was a huge success and the Eastside Restaurant Awards have gone from strength to strength, getting bigger and better every year. Now the race is on to find the winners in the Eastside Restaurant Awards for 2017, and with an exciting new venue booked for this year’s event it looks like being the biggest and best yet. On the evening of Monday 9 October, Doncaster Racecourse, home of the St Leger Festival and the venue over the decades for many a classic sporting contest, will host our annual celebration of the region’s culinary superstars. This glamorous black tie event has quickly become established as one of the big nights of the year in the social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. Our previous venue was The Crown Hotel in

Bawtry, and owner Craig Dowie and the team did a fabulous job in helping to put the Eastside Restaurant Awards on the map. Moving to Doncaster Racecourse, past masters at catering on the largest scales, ensures that we can extend our invitation beyond the local restaurant scene to include the general public. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity for the Eastside region’s food fanatics and socialites (all you would-be Paris Hiltons!) to see and be seen. The room will be dressed by White Rose Occasions of Doncaster, which has spent the last decade helping people plan their celebrations and transforming venues of all shapes and sizes into spectacular settings for big events. There will also be a charity raffle to add to the total funds raised by the Equinox Ball, which will be staged on 30 September at Doncaster Deaf Trust College on behalf of Firefly Cancer Research. Eastside’s reviewers are out and about now, checking out established and new restaurants, seeking out the very best the region has to offer. All our recent award winners have been exceptional, so expectations are high.

The Eastside Readers’ Choice trophy is highly prized. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events/awards/ eastside to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified.

Get involved All restaurants taking part in the Eastside Restaurant Awards benefit from the publicity as we shine a spotlight on the region’s finest dining establishments, from ultra-modern contemporary bistros to cosy cafes, and everything in between. This year’s event promises to be the biggest yet and here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners who have not yet taken the plunge... there is still time! To make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2017, contact Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Moore at terri.moore@rmcmedia.co.uk

EATING OUT

Join the queue CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE, THE COUNTING HOU23 IS A WORTHY ADDITION TO DONCASTER’S DINING OUT SCENE, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. oncaster’s newest wine bar opened its doors in March this year, and as a fan of all things wine related I was excited to sample some of its offerings. Aptly named The Counting Hou23 after its former life as a local bank and paying tribute to the popular shopping square, Nostell Place, by the clever use of numbers, the new addition to Bessacarr is well worth a visit. Walking up to the wine bar we were greeted by a selection shrubbery and hanging baskets in full bloom and the sweet aromas of summer hanging in the air. There’s also a lovely outdoor seating area… sadly off limits on this rainy afternoon. However when I walked into the eatery, any disappointment vanished as I was blown away by the rustic interior. There is a heavy focus on all things wooden, including repurposed tables and a large feature bar that not only houses delicious looking cakes and cookies but dangling rows of wine glasses. The hanging light bulbs, industrial stools and saloon-esque toilet door perfectly tied together an old world and contemporary feel. To start off our meal we opted to share the bread basket and hummus (£4.50). The ciabatta was freshly baked and still warm when it was placed on our table. The crisp crust went perfectly with the red pepper hummus, olive oil and balsamic dip. It was

D

finished off nicely with a large portion of green olives. As the designated driver I opted for a soya latte (£2.35), its smooth, rich taste going down a treat, whilst my friend took full advantage of their extensive wine menu, choosing the Akau Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (125ml £4). The fresh undertones of pineapple, passion fruit and mango offered a long tropical finish, ideal for a mid-summer lunch. For mains, after seeing the steak sandwich (£7) I was sold. Served on fresh thick cut white bread, the Wilkinson’s thick rib steak was cooked to medium-well done perfection, served with sweet caramelised onions, dijonnaise, sweet potato fries along with a terracotta pot teeming with fresh vegetables. My dining companion went down the classic Italian route with a stone-baked vegetarian pizza (£7.95) cooked on site. Packed full of feta, spinach, cherry tomatoes, olives and rocket it was bursting with freshness and flavour. General manager Josh Clamp sources all produce locally from Doncaster market traders including K D Davis & Sons and Wilkinson Butchers. “Using locally-sourced ingredients was a big concept for The Counting Hou23,” he said. “We really wanted to keep everything as close to home as possible and support local businesses.”

Homemade desserts supplied by Mama Maribel proved impossible to resist. A large selection of the cakes are gluten and dairyfree, and I couldn’t wait to sample the Strawberry cake (£3). Beautifully decorated, moist, with a hint of strawberry complemented by the sweet jam and rich buttercream, it went perfectly with my pot of white tea and pear Suki tea (£2.50). My friend chose the rocky road slab (£2.50), which was luxurious with its sweet chewy middle, layer of milk chocolate and marshmallows, drizzled with white chocolate. If you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon, filled with delicious food and great wine selection you can bank on it at The Counting Hou23. “I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. CUBANA’S CULINARY DREAM TEAM HAS A NEW HEAD CHEF AND A NEW MENU.

W

ith over a decade as second in charge – there was no-one better to take control of one of Sheffield’s flagship

kitchens. Erkland Xhaja is celebrating his move to head of the Cubana kitchen in Leopold Square with the unveiling of his first menu. He worked passionately under the command of former head chef Fabian Cruz for over 13 years – Fabian himself had been there since the day the celebrated venue first opened on Trippet Lane, many years before its move to bigger premises. Albanian born Erkland moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He originally started working at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, joining Cubana in 2002 – Erkland now heads up a team of six that includes some of the most experienced and well-respected chefs in the city in the Cubana kitchen that caters for hundreds of covers every week and is now one of the city’s

busiest independent bar/restaurants. He is joined in Cubana’s culinary team by Nicolino Dente, former owner and head chef of Ecclesall Road’s Santinos, Stuart Berry, the original head chef at Nonnas and former owner of Chesterfield Road restaurants Kitos and Swanky Franks, and Ryan Christian, former owner and head chef of Sharrowvale Road’s The Pasta Bar. Erkland’s new menu sees 12 new dishes in a menu consisting of over 50 tapas dishes. It includes his own twist on the celebrated Brazilian stew made with diced pork shoulder, chorizo, smoked bacon, black beans, red peppers, tomato purée and smoked paprika. There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes including a seafood paella served in a traditional paella pan at your table and several tapas dishes with inspiration taken from trips to the Canary Islands – home of Erkland’s partner. Cubana co-owner Adrian Bagnoli said:

“There’s no-one better qualified than Erkland to develop the Cubana menu. The new dishes the team have come up with are some of the best we’ve served and fit in perfectly with the ever-present Cubana favourites for the perfectly balanced tapas menu. I’m looking forward to seeing how popular the new dishes will be and receiving feedback from our regular customers.” Adrian also ensured a dish he tried on a recent family holiday to Mallorca also made the new menu. He said: “We visited an excellent tapas bar in Alcudia and were blown away by their Tiras de Calamares y Chorizo which consists of fresh strips of squid served with small pieces of chorizo glazed in orange and honey– just delicious. Our new menu contains our own twist on that dish.” The full menu can be viewed online at www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

The Harvey is buzzing! FROM QUIZZES TO PARTIES AND EVEN ITS OWN MUSIC FESTIVAL, THERE’S LOTS TO ENJOY AT THIS LIVELY VILLAGE PUB. warm welcome awaits at The Harvey Arms, a traditional pub in the heart of Finningley which has all the key ingredients for a great village local. From pub quizzes, live music to open fires and a beautiful beer garden, it’s ideal for a relaxing afternoon or evening. Almost eight years after taking on The Harvey Arms, husband-and-wife team Sandra and Warren Kennedy, have transformed it into a friendly hub for food, drinks and fun with family and friends alike. Refurbishing the pub’s outside has been a labour of love, and they’ve spent two years transforming the area to the side of the pub from an overgrown space to a lush lawn, scattered with colourful flowers. The latest addition, already a real hit with the locals, is the outside bar built in a converted barn to the back of the pub. Aptly named Peacocks, due to the village being home to many of the majestic birds, the bar will be used during weddings, events, private BBQ’s and parties throughout the year, and gradually it will be utilised as a wine bar and coffee shop during the week. Another exciting addition to The Harvey Arms this year was The Harvey Up in Arms music festival. Taking place as part of the Alliance Festival Group, the event hosted local vendors, a selection of ales along with rides, face painting and a bouncy castle, making it a real family day out. Sandra and Warren had seven pumps on the go including beers from Bradfield Brewery, Copper and Griffin Beer Company and St Austell as well as a great selection of ciders, wine and prosecco.

A

Devon’s Kitchen provided Jamaican street food, while Yorkshire ice cream parlour kept guest cool with their extensive selection of homemade artisan ice creams. Meanwhile Glitter Gem was on hand to offer fantastic face painting and body glitter. The festival ran from midday through to the evening, with a whole host of local bands including Kizah and the Kings, the Rock Beatles, Smoking Beagles and Billy Bibby and the Wry Smiles providing guests with non-

stop, excellent entertainment. The Harvey Up in Arms was such a success, Sandra and Warren are already planning for the festival to take place next year. With more renovations and exciting projects planned for the future, The Harvey Arms looks set to become a top destination for diners in the Doncaster region. They are now taking bookings for private BBQs and events; give them a call today and keep up to date on the latest news via their Facebook page. Jones and Co The benefits of a property trust will include protecting inheritance for children from a previous relationship, protecting up to half of the home value from care fees and protecting your property for the next generation. For property trust wills to be effective, you must own your home jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants – this means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor. Jones and Co. can alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinctive share, which you can then leave in the property trust, which grants the surviving spouse a lifelong interest in the home. Should the surviving spouse go into a care home, only their share of the home is taken into account – not the whole. The team at Jones and Co. includes members of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and Solicitors for the Elderly, so reassured you’re in safe hands. IN BRIEF

Daisy unveils latest work for charity Seven-year-old Daisy Watt from Misson has unveiled her second commission for charity fundraiser ball, Equinox, after her inaugural painting raised over £20,000 last year. This year’s painting is entitled ‘New Day’ and signifies the new start that her granny is now enjoying after winning a fight against cancer. It is on display at Bawtry art gallery, Limited 2 Art. “We are so pleased that Daisy has created another piece of art especially for our Equinox Ball as so many of our guests and supporters were hoping they would have the opportunity to purchase another painting by her,” said Sarah Mullen, Equinox Ball organiser. The painting will be auctioned in the live auction at the Equinox Ball which takes place this year on Saturday 30 September at Doncaster Deaf Trust. A further 150 prints will be commissioned and 15 box canvas prints, which will be added to the silent auction on the evening. This year’s Equinox Ball will once again be raising vital funds for Doncaster based charity Firefly and Cancer Research UK. The aim is to buy another vehicle for Firefly to transport cancer patients to their appointments in Doncaster and Sheffield and help Cancer Research UK to fund vital research into the most common form of childhood cancer, Leukaemia. 50 per cent of money raised at the 2017 Equinox Ball will go towards the cost of a trial to find the best treatment for children with this type of Leukaemia. To pledge a raffle or auction prize, contact Sarah Mullen at equinoxball@gmail.com or visit the Equinox Ball supporting Firefly and Cancer Research Facebook page. For further information, visit www.equinoxball.co.uk/home.
