Over the past years Jack Savoretti has taken the male singer songwriter genre in a direction entirely of his own. As he has evolved from the guitar picking troubadour that caught the attention of Hollywood’s music supervision community early on in his career to more recently the chart-topping arena selling crooner, he manages to avoid every pigeon-hole thrown in his direction.

A sense of PLACE
Karen Sherwood’s latest exhibition at Cupola Gallery runs from 7 February to 8 March.
resh from their ‘Under The Bed Sale’, Hillsborough’s Cupola
major exhibition of the year – and it will feature owner Karen Sherwood’s latest portfolio of work.
‘A Sense of Place’ marks a slight change in direction for Karen, whose previous work has largely focused on the sea with a complementary colour palette. Her processes for creating this latest body of work has remained the same but Karen has found that her paintings have more similarities with actual places – although of where she is unsure.
“I create completely through process and a surprise to me as it is to everyone else,” feelings about the world and I think a sense of place has become much more important, whether you’re from England,
Wales, Scotland or Yorkshire.”
Karen’s new works follow a similar colour palette to her previous work –lots of blues – but with added pinks and oranges. Indeed, she is currently working on a large orange painting, which she plans to name ‘Blistering Sky’. It has remarkably little blue in it, despite that being the usual dominant colour in her paintings.
“I used much more colour than usual but of distance, you can lose yourself in a faded horizon,” adds Karen.
The exhibition, which starts on 7 feature between 30 and 50 paintings of various shapes and sizes, from small postcard size right up to canvas and linen works measuring over 1m.

Braving the ELEMENTS
There’s more to a winter break than skiing. Pete Thompson complements Alpine snow with a trip to a spa as well as a cold-water swim.
With a rapidly soaring heart rate as my body temperature plummets, I’m told “this shows you’re the boss.”
I was battling to manage my breathing after suffering a sharp shock to the system on a freezing winter morning in the Giffre Valley.
There were many moments during this amazing trip to the beautiful Haute-Savoie Mont Blanc region that had taken my breath away – but nothing quite like this.
experience of cold-water swimming in the charming village of Morillon.
Wearing merely swimming shorts and a woolly hat, I tentatively step into the unknown Baltic waters of Lac Bleu along with two fellow hardy Brits.
Slowly immersing myself in the 6.5-degree water with more than a hint of trepidation, I’m reminded of the prebathing breathing techniques briefed
by amiable Swede Asa and cold-water swimming champion Arnaud.
As my heart thuds at an increasing rate of knots and I feel a numbing sensation with my shoulders under the water, Asa nods while assuring me I am winning a big battle of mind over matter.
The Speedo-wearing Arnaud tells us to in circle, so I put a brave face on while focusing with a steely determination as my body acclimatises.
After a few minutes, Asa informs us we can get back on dry land after passing a big test of mental strength.
The reward was to don a huge warm jacket before wandering up to the haven of Asa’s Bastu74 – a lakeside mobile sauna fuelled by a wood-burning stove.
My body tingles in the heat of the sauna while I peer out at the tranquil lake under clear blue skies.
After around 15 minutes in the heat, it
was time to head back out into the cold water for another short dip.
I brace myself, but this time knowing my body could cope and after gazing up at the majestic mountains after breaking into a brief breaststroke I am soon back in the sauna – this time smiling like I meant it.
swim to wash off the sweat, I’m totally revitalised - feeling the mental and physical increase in popularity.
Just 24 hours earlier, I didn’t think I could be more refreshed after visiting the unique heavenly Thermal Baths in Saint Gervais.
Staring skywards while lying back in the purest, bubbling heated water in several outdoor pools at the foot of Mont Blanc I could not be any more relaxed after unwinding in a range steam rooms and saunas.
With a clear head after a dreamy wellness
“Staring skywards while lying back in the purest, bubbling heated water in several outdoor pools at the foot of Mont Blanc I could not be any more relaxed after unwinding in a range steam rooms and saunas.”
experience, I look down on the Thermal Baths from a recently-opened Le Valléen cable car while heading up for an afternoon of skiing in Saint Gervais.
Raring to go after a lovely lunch at the side of the slopes in la Fleche d’Or, I hurtle down a mixture of cruisy blue runs and gentle greens as Mont Blanc appears from the clouds.
Marvelling at the jaw-dropping peaks with the sun beating down while descending wide slopes, it strikes me I could not have asked for a better day – with a combination of putting my feet up and getting the pulse racing in the freshest of air.
Then I was treated a sumptuous dinner in the luxurious Le M de Megève hotel, where I sampled the most fabulous fondue courtesy of a ‘cheesemaker’ Thomas.
A ‘fromelier’ rather than a ‘sommelier’, Thomas showcased the novel Les Grands
Crus de Fondues concept by selecting the Vignes.
The service was every bit as good as the cuisine in the most elegant surroundings that you could to expect in classy Megève – where I stayed at the homely L’Arboisie Hotel.
I also experienced culinary delights at picturesque Lake Annecy – a stunning part of the world I could never tire of visiting.
While the majority of my fellow diners feasted on the famous raclette in the atmospheric Le Freti restaurant, I opted for a tasty alternative Diot and Pormonier sausage dish that proved to be a shrewd choice.
The following morning, I gazed out at captivating Lake Annecy from the balcony of my spacious room at the idyllic Hôtel Les Trésoms.
I had started my jaunt to Haute– the opportunity to watch an enthralling Biathlon World Cup race in Grand Bornand.
Around 11,000 spectators – some in fancy dress while ringing cow bells –created a lively atmosphere while the best male athletes on the planet gave an exhibition of their incredible cross-country skiing and shooting skills.
Norwegian Martin Uldal won the tenkilometre sprint race at the Sylvie Becaert Biathlon Stadium, a venue for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
He was not the only one who showed he was the boss.
