A Spring is COMING
fter a busy end to last year, I’ve had a quiet start to 2025, which has been a welcome change. I’ve been focusing on my my stretch on at Yoga Kula, and truly enjoying being in my wellness era, but now, I’m ready to get out!
February is said to be the month around the corner and some of my favourite restaurants have dropped mouth-watering menus to celebrate. The Owl, Ivy Asia, Stuzzi and Harvey Nichols have all knocked it out of the park in this early part of the year, so if you’re looking for the perfect date or mate night, you should check them out.
Speaking of Harvey Nichols, the Fourth Floor Brasserie has just dropped its new winter set menu which offers three tasty courses and my fave Cosmo cocktail for £35. Its available until mid-March and is perfect for a mid-week catch up over
lunch or dinner. Trust me, it’s good and an absolute bargain.
This spring there’s an exciting new café and bar coming to Moortown. Residence is opening its third venue
can’t wait. If you’re not familiar with Residence, then you really need to get on this It does great coffee, tasty lunch options and banging brunches, plus the new venue is going to be bringing something different with a day-to-night concept offering cocktails and pizza into the evenings. I think there’s a real lack of good bars
so I’m super excited for this one to open.

The Rotherham Empire Trust has already been set up and they are currently looking for the right people with passion and enthusiasm to help drive the project forwards.
Other than the town’s pubs, up-andcoming bands have very few options when it comes to performing and often have to
increase beyond a couple of hundred
people. It is hoped that a new music venue will provide this and also have a positive impact on other businesses in the centre.
After holding an open day in October last
that the renovated venue can provide the town with a real focal point.
“South Yorkshire’s well known for music and Rotherham’s the only town that seems to have lost its emphasis on that, we need to give people a platform,” he said. “We on and it was a phenomenal success. Then people in Clifton Park – and the Wentworth Woodhouse festival which can attract centre involved and a hub of food, drink and music can do just that.”
It’s already clear that this has become a huge passion project for Mark and his family; he is determined to play his part in revitalising Rotherham town centre and in turn, restore a sense of civic pride.
“Like a lot of northern towns, I think Rotherham is at the lowest it can be,” he expressed. “We need to bring back the heritage, bring back the communities and give people in Rotherham a sense of identity and pride.
“A thousand people here on a Friday and Saturday night would make a big difference. It’ll put Rotherham back on the map.”
Although they declined to get involved in the project, Rotherham Council are in agreement that a new music venue could have a positive impact on the town centre.
“Rotherham Council is committed to investing and transforming Rotherham town centre,” said Rotherham Council’s Assistant Director for Transport, Planning,
and Regeneration, Simon Moss. “Last year, we opened Forge Island and the years while improving leisure venues and activities is a key part of this transformation.
“The success of The Reyton’s gig in Clifton Park last summer shows there’s Rotherham, and this has been part of our vision for investment in the town centre’s leisure and cultural offer. The Council worked with the previous owner of the old Empire Theatre on High Street, but our work made the project unviable, and an operator a music venue. An alternative site has since historic building back into use.
“We welcome private sector investment to bring historic buildings back into use and will continue to work with the current owner of the old Empire Theatre to look at the feasibility of an alternative scheme.”
Mark cites recent improvements in everything together in a positive way as than the Last of the Summer Wine they’ll mention the Picturedrome,” beamed Mark. “They have some great bands and it attracts loads of people to the town who otherwise probably wouldn’t go there. Why can’t we do the same in Rotherham?”
Mark is a self-confessed music fan and door when the Rotherham Empire re-opens if he could choose which acts appear?
“For me it would be Billy Ocean but more wife, she’d quite like Adele, but I can’t see that happening!” laughed Mark.
“I knew of the building and when I came to look at it I saw the potential but saw the work it needed doing to it. The previous owner didn’t have the appetite so we mutually agreed for me to take it on.”

Inspiration in the EVERYDAY
Rosie Brennan speaks to up-and-coming Rotherham fashion designer, Summer Wilson.
Summer Wilson, originally from Wickersley, Rotherham is a rising star in the British fashion industry, turning everyday items into works of art. Currently six months into her placement year with garment manufacturer Klash Clothing, she is working as an assistant designer, completing computer-aided design sketches (CADs), as well as assisting with tech packs for the company.
in everyday objects and transforming them into fashionable designs. She said: “I think inspiration is around us all the time, whenever I’m shopping, I’m always taking pictures of any new trims of fabrics I see.
things you stumble across by accident, like some artwork on the street or something your friend happens to be wearing.”
Halfway through an exciting year of learning and development at Klash Clothing, Summer added: “It is nice to feel part of a team and learn from other people who work here. It makes me excited to work in the fashion industry permanently.”
Over the past six months, Summer’s experience as an assistant designer has a more profound sense of self in an artistic sense, as well as understanding of the fashion industry overall.
“I think the biggest change for me is working independently. I have gained great skills using software such as Photoshop and illustrator and gained a really good understanding of what to expect when going into industry and how a brand should communicate with a supplier,” she elaborated.
Pushing to make a name for herself in her short time at the company, Summer has already managed to establish herself in the fashion world. Teasing her new designs, she said “my biggest achievement since working here is getting my designs selected by George Asda, that will then be in store next year.”
Though perhaps her greatest achievement thus far in her career, as she describes it, was her collaboration with the National Football Museum in Manchester on a university project based around the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. Manchester Fashion Institute brought together expertise from across Manchester Metropolitan University, bringing a selection of exciting and contemporary football garments to their
the ‘Football Voices Festival’, held at the museum.
The collaboration involved “a complimentary tour around the museum and exclusive access to items held in the archive,” Summer said, as she found a hand-embroidered and signed 1950s
Brian Clifford, caught her eye, drawing inspiration from the archived piece. Her project was selected as one of the top four from Manchester Fashion Institute, and has been installed in the ‘Kick-Off Couture’ exhibition, featured in the 2024 ‘Football Voices Festival’ at the museum.
“As part of being selected we had the opportunity to have a photoshoot at Preston football ground with a professional photographer, and the images are currently up around the exhibition in the museum,” the student explained.
Passionate about all things creative from a young age, Summer excelled in artistic subjects throughout her time in school.
“I thrived in my textiles classes and bonded with my teachers who always pushed me to the best of my ability,” she explained. After leaving school and realising fashion was the path for her, she began studying Fashion Design and Technology at Manchester Metropolitan,
to challenge herself to gain experience, she then completed a two-month internship at Because of Alice (BOA), a contemporary British womenswear brand, gaining knowledge of how a fashion brand runs
from a design, manufacturing and social media perspective. During her time there, Summer managed to secure herself a placement year in her current role as an assistant designer at Klash Clothing.
Embodying the style of a new generation, Summer’s own fashion sense combines comfort and style.
“I would say my every day personal style is stylish loungewear (comfort is classic, timeless look. I love blazers, shirts, anything tailored and makes you look put together,” she explained.
As a young creative starting out in the industry, Summer acknowledges some of the obstacles faced by artists and designers in the north of England. A lack of opportunity for creatives such as herself in this part of the country is unfortunately a reality for many.
“In my personal experience, the only barrier I have faced is the lack of creative jobs in the north compared to the south,” Summer explained. “I feel lucky to be at Manchester Metropolitan University as they have great ties with people who are well known within the fashion industry, a placement or a job after graduation. However, I am worried that due to high graduate within the north region.”
Gazing into the future with enthusiasm, she is prepared to take on the next steps in her fashion career.
project I have done that has a collection, not just stand-alone pieces. I think it will be a challenge however, I know it will push me to the best of my abilities,” she said. “My biggest long-term goal is securing a job after university. I am eager to work for a brand whose views and values align with mine, as well as work my way up the design ladder to become senior role. I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

Asking the right QUESTIONS
Should I be able to choose my hip or knee replacement implant? Mr Veysi T Veysi explains how you can make an informed decision.
Modern life is full of choices. We only need to go to a supermarket or search online for anything and we can be overwhelmed with the variety that is available.
Most patients who are due to have a hip or knee replacement have no idea about the variety of implants available to their surgeon. They also do not know how a surgeon makes a choice between the available implants, or indeed what this choice is based on. In this article, I will explain these choices and suggest some information that is available to help you ask the right questions and make the right decisions about your treatment.
We are lucky in the United Kingdom in having the National Joint Registry (NJR) which has been in service for over 20 years. It records the performance of the implants used in hip and knee replacements
which are not performing to the expected standards. It also records the experience and performance of the surgeons. This information is available to everyone on their website ( org.uk). Here you can search for hospitals and individual surgeons and compare their practice to others in the UK. It also allows you to see whether they use tried and tested implants (ODEP rated) with a proven track record. Such implants will give you and your surgeon the assurance that the implants are safe and more importantly, that they are under constant surveillance for any potential problems.
While it is important to use proven implants, it is also essential that innovation and design improvements are supported. If such new implants are to be used it is essential that they are monitored closely. Your surgeon should inform you if they are using newer implants and assure you that
their use is being entered into the NJR for surveillance.
The most important aspect of the choice of implants is your surgeon’s experience with their use and their outcomes with them. Unlike the choices we make at a supermarket, the choice of implants should be made by surgeons who make the informed choice on their patients’ behalf. They should explain this choice and the rationale behind it to their patients.
Patients do have a choice. They can choose their surgeon with care. Always ask friends and family about their experiences. Your GP can also give you information about hospitals to choose and surgeons to choose. Ultimately, you can look at the website above to help you make a decision about your surgeon’s experience and outcomes.
Choose your hospital and surgeon. Let your surgeon choose the right operation (if needed) and implant for you.

There is never a shortage of hotels in the centre of Leeds but what if the traditional hotel room starts to feel a bit restrictive and you crave space and the comforts of home.
Serviced apartments provide the perfect balance, offering all the luxuries of a modern hotel but with the additional facilities afforded only in an apartment. A serviced apartment enables you to cook your own meals in a fully-equipped kitchen or relax on a balcony with the Riverside development overlooking the River Aire.
This type of accommodation was seen as a unique idea when Christine Boothroyd launched The Chambers and over the last 20 years she has steadily built a reputation by delivering an unforgettable experience
service where every detail is meticulously designed to exceed expectations. The Chambers combine personalised service, sophisticated design, and an intimate ambiance which creates a sanctuary of home from home comforts.
One hundred apartments are available between two city centre properties. Both stay or one year (or longer).
Park Place is a boutique-style hotel in walk from Leeds train station. There are 63 apartments in eight different formats from studio apartments to penthouse suites. In addition there is a library in which guests can relax, an honesty bar, an on-site gym and an outdoor courtyard. The hotel also has meeting and conference facilities.
Riverside West offers 34 one or twobedroom apartments in four different windows and balconies. As with Park Place all apartments have kitchens, smart TVs and audio entertainment. Both locations have generous on-site parking.
“We saw a gap in the market for shortterm lets and wanted to offer a ‘turnkey’ approach where you can walk into one of our properties and carry on with your life with the minimum of fuss,” said Christine. With a background in interiors, Christine has been instrumental in the contemporary design of the properties and apartments which are regularly updated to keep them fresh and homely.
Such is The Chambers’ reputation, Christine regularly welcomes repeat customs and is very supportive of the TV, use the properties as a base when they are
