2016’s answer to diminishing the key signs of ageing.
I
t is renowned as one of the region’s foremost destinations for treatments that help to stop the clock and make skin appear younger, firmer and more radiant than ever. And this month, Elements MediSpa has added yet another string to its bow with the introduction of the much-anticipated 3JUVE by Lynton, a brand new anti-ageing device that is already making waves in the skincare industry. The device uses a unique combination of advanced non-invasive skin treatments to tackle the three key signs of ageing in one simple procedure, achieving the ultimate
natural-looking result by resurfacing, rebrightening and remodelling. All 3JUVE treatments start with an advanced consultation to determine your specific goals, meaning the powerful mix of technologies can be completely customised depending on your main concerns. Whether you are concerned with discolouration, loss of firmness or lines and wrinkles, you achieve the results you really want. If wrinkles are your primary concern, the powerful technology is designed to retexture the skin for maximum smoothness.Your own skin is encouraged to ‘work younger’ over time by stimulating collagen and elastin production to reduce the appearance of lines, tighten pores and erase any textural irregularities. Those with discolouration are able to harness the benefits of airbrushing by dramatically reducing redness, veins, sun spots and sun damage for flawless skin. Finally, a subtle lifting and firmness is achieved – perfect for loose or sagging skin. Dr Samantha Hills, clinical director at Lynton, said: “Our new 3JUVE device has been designed to tackle all three of these symptoms by delivering optimum stimulation of the dermis and epidermis, resulting in unprecedented collagen renewal and even
Follow skin tone. The ‘Elements MediSpa results Doncaster’ on achieved Facebook to find out about the special through this introductory offers new 3JUVE from mid-March treatment will help meet the new, high-levels of demand for entirely natural-looking anti-ageing results.” The treatment can also be used alongside other procedures, such as anti-wrinkle injections, to enhance results even further. A typical 3JUVE treatment takes around an hour and clients experience a warm sensation. While improvement is evident after the first session, for optimal results three to five treatment sessions are advised. To book your consultation, call Elements MediSpa on 01302 34 34 32. Can auricular therapy (hopi ear candles) prove to be a successful alternative to syringing, helping to relieve discomfort in the ears? Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies investigates.
A
uricular therapy is a therapy using hopi ear candles. These candles are hollow tubes made of cotton, soaked in beeswax, honey and herbs. When lit they act like a chimney, causing the warm air to create a vacuum at the bottom. This vacuum gently stimulates the ear, facilitating removal of wax and impurities. The treatment is soothing, relaxing and helps with wellbeing; it reduces pressure in the ears and head, improving hearing, helps nasal breathing and improves the sense of smell. In fact, if you suffer from any of the following, it can offer a solution. • Migraine, headaches • Rhinitis, hay fever • Compacted ear wax • Recuperation from flu • Tinnitus When having hopi ear candles there should also be a facial massage following to help facilitate draining of the sinuses and trigger lymph action to enhance the blood flow in that area.

ES Gardening Words: Phoebe Seymour
Glorious gardens It’s time to get busy and prepare for a beautiful display this summer, says expert Graham Bodle, of Walkers Nurseries.
W
ith an unseasonably mild winter, followed by late flurries of snow and lingering early morning frosts, spring is probably the furthest thing from your mind. It may not seem like a good time to apply your green thumbs to your garden, but there are things you can be doing to prepare it for the coming warmer months. Whilst you may find a lot of gardening articles telling you to plant your spring bulbs before December, landscape gardener and Walkers Nurseries gift shop and restaurant manager Graham Bodle says it is important not to follow this advice to the letter: “It’s all weather-dependant. Definitely wait until the frosts have gone. It’s too early for seeds, but you can start preparing for bedding plants and smaller plug plants or buy flowering bulbs in pots for instant colour.” And what better way, than preparing your blank canvas – the lawn.
Walkers Nurseries
“You can start with everything from the lawn to the borders,” continues Graham. “March is usually the time to aerate the lawn and to seed any patches you might have. If you haven’t had the chance in autumn, now is the time to treat your lawn with a weed and feed with added moss killer.” Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and
nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeper and produces a stronger, more luscious lawn. The gardening diary may be unpredictable but Graham suggests these months as a guideline: “You can plant evergreen hardy shrubs any time of the year – but they are best planted in dormant periods to settle and establish their root systems before the drier weather. Annuals and wild flower seeds will do better if planted in April. Hanging baskets can be left well into early June.” Once the weather is more consistently warm, plug plants such as trailing petunias, geraniums and fuchsias are ideal, as they don’t have to be de-seeded. But for now, evergreen shrubs, herbaceous and woody herbs are a safer bet. If you’re not sure where to begin, Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist Graham has a few ideas: “You want evergreen shrubs and to add a
020 - 021 ESide Mar16_Layout 1 17/02/2016 09:38 Page 2
bit of colour with herbaceous plants and annuals. Put taller plants at the back of your garden with smaller plants cascading down to the front - just double check the sizes of the plants first. “Don’t plant them too close together or too close to the fence as you won’t be able to maintain them. Google it if you are unsure.” Walkers currently stocks evergreen shrubs and early bedding, as well as their popular packs of vegetable plants. If you don’t have much of a garden or a greenhouse, their small sizes mean they will easily fit in your porch or on your windowsill. The garden centre has everything to get you started including a great range of tools, razorhead shears, hose attachments, gardening gloves and much more. There’s even some gorgeous gifts this spring as well as some wild and wonderful stag heads by designer Carola Van Dyke, where taxidermy meets colourful textiles. If you are new to gardening, assistants James and Elaine will be happy to help. With 60 years of gardening experience between them, they’ll be sure to answer any other questions you may have. Graham is currently rebuilding his Chelsea Flower Show award-winning Sculptor’s Picnic Garden, which will be available to view at Walkers from late spring to early summer. Come for a walk around the garden centre for all the inspiration you’ll need this season.
Walkers Nurseries on Mosham Road, Blaxton, offers a Gardeners’ Club Card with which you can collect points and be entered into regular prize draws. Call 01302 770 325 or visit www.walksersnurseries.tv for details.

The work (which the YWP hope to have completed by summer) will transform African Plains, with larger interlinked reserves to allow even more animals to range around.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM? Act now or lose your right to claim
By James Murray, Head of Dispute Resolution at Jones & Co Solicitors
If you've had an accident and are thinking of making a personal injury claim, it is essential to seek advice now to avoid losing your right to claim. The government is making two major changes to personal injury claims which are expected to apply from April 2017 onwards. Whiplash Claims The first of those changes is that from April 2017 anyone who has suffered whiplash in a motor accident will not be able to make a claim at all. So if you have a whiplash claim it is vital you seek advice as soon as possible to start your claim before April 2017. Any claims already begun by April 2017 will be fine. Increase in the Small Claim Limit The second change is to raise the limit which applies to low value personal injury claims. At the moment, if your claim is worth more than £1,000 and you are successful, you can expect to recover your costs from the other party. From April 2017, anyone with a claim valued at under £5,000 will be regarded as making a 'small claim' and will not be able to claim their legal costs back.

BAWTRY James Murray: 01302 710555 48 High St, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JB
The change to the claims limit will mean that from April 2017 many people will have to deal with their claim alone or pay for legal help that they won't be able to claim back. Representing yourself is not straightforward and, because most people don't have the level of knowledge of claims that an insurer does, those representing themselves can end up receiving far less than they would have done with legal representation. A small claim involves court directions that have to be complied with, deadlines that have to be met and court fees that need to be paid on time. This can all be confusing for anyone without expertise in the process. However, if you've had an accident that wasn't your fault, whether that was on the road, at work or in a public place, speak to us now as there is still time to make a claim before April 2017 and ensure that your legal costs are covered. | BAWTRY FASHION WEEK
Strut your stuff Glitz and glamour returns to Bawtry once more with the arrival of Fashion Week. Make sure you keep up to date with what’s going on.
A
s Bawtry celebrates its vibrant and glamorous reputation as a mighty fashion hub this month, you’ll be forgiven for mistaking the market town for London, Paris or Milan. For the past three years, Bawtry Fashion Week (BFW) has been celebrating the best fashion outlets of Bawtry with various events taking place throughout the town. Founded in 2013 by the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA), the aim of the event is to promote the importance of shopping on the local high street and supporting the local economy. Rebecca Dickenson, chair of BRA, said: “Bawtry has an eclectic mix of retail outlets and a vibrant social scene and we are keen to celebrate this whilst giving our fashion retailers the chance to shine.“ The event is always an exciting time for
the local community and last year was no exception. Highlights from 2015 included a swimwear and lingerie fashion shoot hosted by & She Knows…, Bawtry Eye Academy showed off their fabulous collection of frames and sunglasses at their Tiffany event, there was a fashion show at Incognito, and Ziniz Wine Bar & Restaurant rounded off the week with a glitzy after show party. Robinsons of Bawtry hosted a digital magazine shoot whilst Cherish Dress Agency hit the streets of Bawtry every day of fashion week dressed in red to promote and collect donations for Red Nose Day. This year’s BFW, taking place between Thursday 10 and Thursday 17 March, promises to be even bigger and brighter, with Cherish Dress Agency planning A Week of Colour. Each day the store will highlight a different colour and will be providing special gifts and offers to those who visit wearing that colour. This is an especially important year for BRA members Robinsons of Bawtry, as they are also celebrating the business’s 30th anniversary. They’ll also be celebrating 15 years of Mulberry at Robinsons with many special Bawtry Fashion Week promotions in-store and will be holding a Wolford Event on Friday 11 March, where area sales manager Alison Fraser will be showcasing the 2016 collections from

Wolford, plus samples of forthcoming ranges and offering one-to-one fashion advice. And it’s not just fashion outlets getting in on the action. China Rose are offering £2 off their special set menus throughout BFW, whilst Caviars are offering an exclusive lunchtime menu. Bawtry has a whole range of fantastic cafes and restaurants to dine in between the week’s events including The Gray Rooms (coffee shop and bistro), The Townhouse Tea Rooms, Thyme At Bawtry, Crown Hotel, Bawtry Bar & Brasserie and Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse. To top off the week’s glamorous festivities, there will be an after show party on Thursday 17 March at the fabulous Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie with live music and a few surprises. To showcase everything Bawtry has to offer, Trax FM presenter Lucy Doxey will once again be providing daily reports on the events lined up through the week, as well as interviews with those involved with BFW. Great lengths We put lasting long locks from Rubies to the test.
B
ack in December, Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore and sales executive Rebecca Humes decided to glam up their locks for the festive season with some gorgeous hair extensions. They went to Rubies The Hair Boutique, where owner Margaret Parkin has been applying hair extensions for the past 20 years. She always uses Great Lengths, proven to be the best, most resilient hair brand, with the strongest bond. Rubies have recently been recognised as a Gold Standard Salon by Great Lengths for the fourth year in a row, meaning all the salon staff are trained to a very high standard. Terri and Rebecca both opted for Indian Temple Hair, which is naturally grown and ethically sourced. Indian hair is the best quality as it is untreated, making it more tolerable to the pre-bonding, colouring and colour removal
process. They were advised on the after care of their hair, including how to wash and style it effectively. Six weeks later, they booked checkups to make sure their hair was still in good condition. Terri and Rebecca’s hair extensions are still going strong and are so versatile, they can easily be styled to give them both a glamorous and casual look. Rebecca said: “After struggling for the last few years to grow my hair past a certain stage, to have instant length was one of the most amazing feelings. “Having short hair is very restrictive when it comes to styling. By adding length and volume, there were no limits to the hairstyles that I could wear. I was able to do up and down styles for every occasion. I have found them incredibly easy to look after and have had positive comments from friends, family

and even strangers. “I will certainly have extensions again. Margaret is a true professional. She and her staff were so friendly and helpful – and above all, very experienced and knowledgeable about the extensions and their aftercare. I can see why they are a Great Lengths Gold Standard Salon.” Terri added: “I was very reassured to find that both the extensions and the service at Rubies are of the highest quality. I am so surprised they’ve lasted this long.” For gorgeous long locks, call Rubies today. Be sure to book your consultation at least two days before the extensions are applied. t’s always useful to get some inside knowledge when it comes to making your selections at an unfamiliar restaurant. So on my first visit to Thyme at Bawtry I was grateful for the input of Kirsty, our bubbly and enthusiastic waitress. “The scotch egg is so popular, we make sure it always stays on the menu. And I definitely recommend the lemon and herb chicken,“ she said as my partner and I settled in to our window seats at this charming, contemporary eatery tucked away on a gorgeous Georgian side street just off Great North Road. Ok, there may be cynics out there who think restaurant staff only push the dishes that aren’t exactly flying out of the kitchen. If they say “I really recommend the pigs’ trotters in aspic”, they are more likely to be saying, “We got a load from our supplier and if we don’t shift them by tomorrow, they’ll need to be binned.” Thankfully in this case, the enthusiasm was obviously genuine and, as we soon discovered, was completely justified. Following Kirsty’s suggestions, I started with Thyme’s homemade scotch egg. Under a thin layer of breadcrumbs was a warm layer of Cumberland sausage and a soft-boiled hen’s egg with a slightly runny yolk. This was beautifully presented with light and crisp pieces of black pudding and bathed in mustard mayonnaise. Those who pick up those stodgy chilled footballs from the supermarket have not lived until they have tasted the real thing. My partner’s starter was equally satisfying.
He chose the soup of the day; a sweet, thick and creamy bowl of root vegetable soup accompanied by soft, warm bread – a great winter warmer. Moving onto mains, I had the lemon and herb chicken served with roasted vegetables and fondant potatoes. The carrots were impressively arranged in a Stonehenge formation whilst the bed of parsnips and potatoes were perfectly crisp. I was then pleasantly surprised to taste succulent pieces of chicken covered in a zingy lemon drizzle. Meanwhile, my partner was enjoying his juicy medium-cooked fillet steak with fondant potatoes, cabbage, pancetta and wild mushrooms. Combined with the steak, the tangy sauce and rich mushrooms made for a winning combination. For dessert, Kirsty recommended the white chocolate and ginger cheesecake to my partner, whilst my mind was made up about the warm Belgium chocolate brownie. Our waitress was truly on a home run. My partner relished every mouthful of his high creamy slab of cheesecake on a ginger biscuit base with sharp ginger giving it an authentic taste. However, this didn’t stop him trying to eat my brownie as well, which was crumbly on the outside and soft in the middle. The slight bitterness of the chocolate was beautifully complemented by a saccharine strawberry sauce, fresh blueberries and a refreshing blood orange sorbet – a delicious end to the evening. I whole-heartedly agree with Kirsty’s recommendations. When it comes to flavour, Thyme doesn’t do things by halves. www.visitbawtry.com | 13

oncaster has a proud history of horse racing, with the racecourse attracting the region’s most glamourous fans throughout the year to cheer their winners across the finish line. For many years now, those in the know have chosen the buzzing town of Bawtry to begin and end a fabulous day at the race track, earning it a well-deserved place in the hearts of the equestrian elite. On Saturday 14 May, for the fifth year running, Doncaster Racecourse will showcase this heritage with the Visit Bawtry Race Day. Hosted by the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA), the seven races are sponsored by local businesses including The Crown Hotel, Robinsons of Bawtry, China Rose, Fine & Country, Portland Autos and Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse. Gates open at 3pm and the racing takes places between 5.45pm and 8.45pm.
“We are very much looking forward to our fifth Visit Bawtry Race Day and to welcoming businesses and their guests to this special occasion,” said BRA chair Rebecca Dickenson. “Doncaster Racecourse is a great platform to promote the work that we do and the diverse range of businesses, restaurants and retail that we have in Bawtry.” Once the final race has been run, the party really gets started, thanks to live music from Will Young. | RETAILER OF THE MONTH
www.visitbawtry.com Words: Stephanie Burns Photography: Sean Tulpin
Fantastic food and great customer service made Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse an easy choice for Retailer of the Month.
Simple, but it works T
he first anniversary of their hugely successful restaurant isn’t the only reason the Coleman’s Pizzeria and Steakhouse team are celebrating this month – they have also been crowned the Visit Bawtry Retailer of the Month! The Bawtry restaurant burst onto the region’s dining scene last year and hasn’t slowed down since. Quickly making a name for themselves thanks to a great variety of steaks and pizzas – not to mention their support of local charities and the Visit Bawtry ethos – owners John and Sarah Coleman welcome everyone from kids to couples to parties every night of the week. “We’re really happy to have won this title,” said John, who harboured a dream of setting up Doncaster’s first steakhouse for six years before taking the plunge last March. “There was an idea there and no-one was doing it so when this site became available, we jumped on it. It’s essentially just steaks and pizzas – it’s simple, but it works.” John listens to his customers, constantly expanding the menu to keep up with demand.
The new version has more steaks and burgers than ever, and this includes the world’s priciest beef, wagyu steak. Known for its superior taste, intense fat marbling and mouth-wateringly juicy texture, this tantalising steak is the crème de la crème of the meat world and adds yet another item onto the long list of reasons to visit. A long-standing highlight of the menu is the incredible 72oz rump steak – the biggest in Doncaster. “We’ve sold 20 of these huge steaks,” said John. “I originally thought they would be ordered by people looking for a fairly cheap meal for four, but every order has been for just one person. Only two people have ever finished it by themselves, and one of those was a cage fighter.” Those with a more modest appetite love the best-selling pizzas Meat Feast (chorizo, pepperoni, Cajun chicken, pancetta, fillet steak, red onion, fresh chilli, garlic oil, £13.95) and ‘Posh’ Bacon & Brie (pancetta, brie, mozzarella, chilli chutney and rocket, £10.95), as well as the great variety of steaks. They also sell a lot of ribs, which come with their homemade Coca Cola BBQ sauce.
After one member of the Doncaster Knights came and enjoyed them so much, he came back with the other 36 team members. Every one of them ordered ribs – and they all loved them. Alongside the fantastic food, the great customer service has also been winning them rave reviews. “We try to give good friendly service and interact with customers,” said John. “If we know it’s someone’s birthday we’ll put up balloons and get them a cake. We always try to make the experience one to remember.” New lunchtime offers (any pizza for £7.95, or a sandwich and chips for £5.50), as well as the new ‘steak-away’ option, where your favourite steak can be ordered to take away, are helping to keep things fresh and exciting in Bawtry. Elsewhere, their growing success is evident in their new venture, Coleman’s Bistro at The Blacksmiths Arms in Everton, where they serve up good pub food Monday to Saturday and a hugely popular carvery each Sunday. To celebrate a fantastic first year, John and Sarah are throwing a party during Bawtry Fashion Week. Everyone is invited to join them on Thursday 17 March for live soul and classic R&B. YORKSHIRE CARAVANS HELP PRE-SCHOOL A renowned Yorkshire business has shown its support for future generations with a generous donation to the refurbishment of an outdoor play area at Misson Pre-School, near Doncaster. Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry joined forces with sign design company Beacon Signs and together, their sponsorship helped transform an under-loved play area into a bright, eye catching and engaging space. “We are so pleased to offer our support to the school and cement our long association with the nursery,” said Jo Goulden, owner Yorkshire Caravans and committee member of Mission Pre-School Charity. “A humble village nursery has now been transformed and the children now have an outdoor area where they can explore, imagine and most importantly, play.” As a special touch, current pupils at the nursery created a piece of artwork, which has been brought to life by Beacon Signs. Sarah Taylor, manager of Misson Pre-School, said: “Our warmest thanks go to Yorkshire Caravans for their help to allow us to rejuvenate our outdoor area. The children are simply thrilled, and to see them enjoy the new area has been a delight.” Yorkshire Caravans, Doncaster Road, Bawtry, Yorkshire DN10 6DG www.yorkshirecaravans.com 30 | www.visitbawtry.com

oncaster-based Leger Frames has been improving homes far and wide for over 20 years and, during that time has built an enviable reputation for honesty and customer service. This fresh approach has evolved Leger Frames to include owner Jay Steward, who has over 25 years’ experience in home improvements, and a trusted team of six. Jay’s many years in the industry has equipped him with invaluable knowledge of the best products on the market and, no matter how big or small the project, he and his team use the highest quality products. “We don’t just meet minimum specifications,” Jay says. “A lot of our customers come from recommendations and that’s because we
complete every job to the best standard.” Conservatories are particularly popular and, while homeowners love the extra space and light that a conservatory brings, changing temperatures can make them uncomfortable places – too hot in summer and too cold in the winter. With Leger Frames, your conservatory will be built with quality windows, frames, doors and flooring, so it can be used all year round. As well as conservatories, Leger Frames fits canopies, orangeries, wood flooring, fascias and guttering, and windows and doors. All of their windows and doors are Liniar, a product which is renowned for being robust, durable and windproof and, as a bonus, is made from lead-free, energy efficient, uPVC, making them a sustainable choice. Words: Fiona Barber Frames’ products are also Secured By Design – a UK Police initiative, which supports the principles of designing out crime through the use of effective security standards. And, in addition to this, absolutely everything is covered under a ten-year guarantee. Allowing strangers into your home to complete work can be daunting, but Jay and his trusted team ensure minimal disruption. Employing Leger Frames mean you will receive an excellent personal service. After measurements have been taken, Leger Frames provide a quotation free of charge. They only ever take on one project at a time, which means you can be sure of a swift turnaround. No deposit is necessary and no payment is taken until work is complete. The company covers all areas of England and, with no sub contractors, and just Jay to deal with from start to finish, transforming your house to a home couldn’t be easier. Visit Leger Frames’ showroom today to see what’s on offer, or if you already have a design in mind, the team can provide a bespoke service. Dining at the Olive Lounge evokes memories of sun-drenched Spanish holidays for Chris Wilson.

H
ere’s a taste of something new, a blast of Mediterranean sunshine to see us through the last lingering shadows of a long, dark winter. The Olive Lounge is a dual-purpose venue that is creating quite a buzz in Wickersley. Downstairs is a wine bar with an extensive cocktail list and occasional live music that has quickly found an appreciative clientele. It is a lively place, ideal for meeting up with friends after work for a midweek drink, while weekends are always extremely busy. Upstairs is quieter but no less impressive, a Spanish-style restaurant serving tapas and larger dishes, with trappings such as ceramic tiles, polished floorboards and wooden shutters on the windows that can’t help but bring back memories of summer holidays in scorching climates. The Spanish guitar music playing gently in the background when we visited was a nice touch. An open kitchen added to the cheerful atmosphere, and the large strings of garlic and chillies hanging from the serving hatch suggested that the chefs will take no prisoners when it comes to delivering full-on flavours. We started our meal with a few selections from the tapas section of the menu, an ideal way

to share the experience. Four dishes between two was just about right, as portions are quite generous. Slow braised beef brisket in pepper sauce had a sharp flavour and the meat was so tender it must have fallen clean away from the bone; deep fried squid rings were crisp on the outside and tender within; king prawns in a garlic, chilli and tomato sauce packed just enough heat and the cauliflower fritters were a little different and very moreish. In such a relaxed and friendly setting it’s best to take your time over the food and, having got into a sharing mood with our tapas starters, we continued the theme and divided our attentions equally between two main courses. Seeing as we’d already been reminded of sunny holidays in Spain, seafood paella seemed hard to resist and this was a real showstopper, piled high with perfectly cooked rice and generously stuffed with king prawns, calamari and mussels. We also enjoyed one of the vegetarian mains, roasted aubergine with basil oil, tomato, feta cheese and pine nuts. With a side order of spicy potato wedges and some excellent Spanish wine to sip, this was proving to be a great way to spend a chilly February evening. The high
standards continued with two classic desserts. Crema Catalan is a Spanish take on a French classic, crème brûlée. Served slightly warm with the thinnest, crispest of crunchy toppings, and infused with zesty orange, it was light and delicious. By way of contrast, chocolate caramel tart was incredibly rich, an indulgent treat that proved too much to finish on the night but provided a decadent breakfast treat the following morning.

Exciting times at the Mayflower From bar meals and gastro food to weddings, special events and luxury boutique accommodation, there is something for everyone at this fast-growing venue. ost
T
his month is packed with events and exciting changes taking place at the Mayflower Bar and Eatery. March will see the introduction of a brand new menu, as well as a special set menu for Mother’s Day, a renovation to extend the front bar into the back of the restaurant to create a more open-plan setting, and the launch of a training programme for people with learning difficulties. The restaurant can cater for up to 120 people, with classic and modern gastro food, an extensive wine list and Barista coffees. Owner Rob Hudson says they change the menu three times a year to make the most of seasonal produce. “We try to make sure there is something for everyone. My chefs are fantastic and all our dishes are made fresh

onsite using top quality ingredients,” he said. For those looking to relax and while away a few hours, the covered veranda is ideal. With a beautiful view of the countryside and heaters to cosy up to in the cooler months, it can be enjoyed all year round. The Mayflower Bar and Eatery offers a fabulous variety of dishes to choose from, including tempting Thai curries, delicious Mexican fajitas, hearty pub classics, as well as more contemporary dishes, sandwiches and snacks, and an extensive grill section. For children, there’s much more on offer than simple pizza and chips. Little ones can enjoy cheesy pasta, ribs, chicken goujons, or fish, chips and mushy peas among many others. Seniors are also well catered for and, with the Mayflower’s special lunchtime menu, over 55s can enjoy one course for £6, two courses for £9 and three courses for £12. Their Sunday lunches are
especially popular – they recently hit a record of serving 273 in one day – and are available at two courses for £14 and three courses for £16 (booking is essential). And, if you fancy treating your loved ones to a delicious family meal, there is a three-course set menu available for Mother’s Day.You need to book to secure a table and the set menu costs £18.95 for adults and £9.95 for children 11 and under. With quality gastro food and a stylish country house setting there is plenty of reason to dine at the Mayflower, and anyone celebrating their birthday can enjoy a free £10 main-course voucher. Simply visit their website to download the voucher and present it when you arrive. As well quality cuisine, the Mayflower Bar and Eatery is the ideal elegant wedding venue. Their luxury function suite offers brides and grooms a sophisticated reception venue with fantastic food and the upstairs gorgeous boutique rooms provide modern accommodation for those travelling out of the area. surroundings and a relaxing atmosphere for a stylish yet comfortable stay. There’s no denying the year on year growth and success the Mayflower Bar and Eatery has enjoyed, and Rob admits he couldn’t have done it without his staff. He is focused on growing his team from within including taking on apprentices – who are paid above the apprentice wage. Rob is also keen to contribute something to the community, starting with employing more people with learning difficulties. “We have two guys lined up to start in the kitchen – one has Asperger’s and the other has autism. You might have to spend slightly longer with them in the beginning training them up, but they do an amazing job.” Alongside this, Rob is setting up a training programme where people with learning
difficulties will train and work with him at the Mayflower for six months, receive help and support from job coach Jenny Candler and will attain a basic health and safety, food safety, NVQ Level 1 in food cooking and preparation. “It’s about giving people who might not have real work opportunities available to them the chance to learn disciplines, develop social skills and hopefully get out of the system and go into fulltime work. If we can do our little bit, then that that’s brilliant. I’m hoping to get other hotels involved too.”

Tantalising tastes The Crown Hotel comes up trumps again with its new menu, writes Stephanie Burns.
Y
ou’d forgive The Crown Hotel in Bawtry for sticking to what it knows best. Those hearty steaks, gravitydefying burgers and tasty platters would easily be enough to lure in diners every night of the week for years to come. But they’ve never been content with resting on their laurels, and this long-held desire to surprise and delight their guests with tantalising new dishes is hard to resist. I’m no stranger to the Crown’s varied menus. From light lunches and cosy meals for two to banquets fit for a king, I’ve sampled them all and been impressed every time with how well head chef of 30-plus years Caz and her team turn their hand to each situation. On this particular occasion, it was an evening meal for two to road-test the brand new menu. Alongside those favourites now sit a host of exciting new options that we couldn’t wait to try. I chose the healthy route when selecting a starter, with a spicy Thai duck salad. The aromatic duck had been rubbed liberally with a spicy marinade – it’s not for the faint-hearted but perfect if you love a proper dose of heat – and was doused with a really tasty sauce before being sprinkled with sesame seeds. Shards of carrot and cabbage beneath were smothered in a lime and ginger dressing. I made a mental note to choose this again in future, perhaps as a bigger version for a main course. Across the table, my partner raved about his mussels, soaked in a beautiful white wine, cream, garlic and parsley sauce, which he mopped up with crusty bread once he’d devoured his good portion of shellfish. Things had got off to a winning start – and mains continued along the same course. The peppery pesto cream sauce was a great
accompaniment to the pumpkin ravioli – perfectly cooked pasta with a wonderful touch of sweetness from the pumpkin. The crushed amaretti breadcrumb topping was a great addition and added a lovely crunch to the dish. My partner had chosen a heartier option, with an unusual take on the traditional surf and turf. Rather than steak and king prawns, Caz’s offering included crispy belly pork, succulent scallops balanced on discs of black pudding, a smooth sweet potato puree and a creamy cider and sage sauce. A side of fresh curly kale with chilli and garlic proved an excellent addition to the luxuriously rich dish. To finish, we sidestepped our usual squabble over who is allowed the best pudding on the menu by sharing a long-standing Crown favourite – the dessert platter. Tiny glasses of Eton mess, two slices of chocolate brownie, two portions of Bakewell tart, a scoop of clotted cream, a silky caramel sauce and bowl of honeycomb ice cream. These little bits of everything add up to a very exciting whole and ensured we ended our meal in real style. Whether you’re a regular at the Crown or considering your first visit, this new menu – and the traditional favourites – are well worth checking out.

Eat, drink, stay – in style A new gastro pub in Torworth caters for everyone – and you can stay over too.
A
Bassetlaw village is the setting for a new gastro pub with rooms. The former Huntsman Inn at Torworth, which sits astride the old Great North Road between the market towns of Bawtry on the South Yorkshire border and Retford in North Nottinghamshire, has been transformed into The Separatist, in a nod to the area’s connections with the Mayflower Pilgrims who helped found the modern USA. Decor will feature references to the Mayflower Pilgrims who included William Bradford from Austerfield who set sail aboard The Mayflower in 1620 to seek religious freedom in the New World, eventually becoming the Governor of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, and William Brewster of nearby Scrooby. Later in March, the plan is to open six luxury boutique guest bedrooms offering high quality bed and breakfast to visitors as part of the new venture. The development is timely, as an influx of visitors is expected into the area in the build up to the 400th anniversary in 2020 of the crossing to

the New World. Experience Nottinghamshire and Bassetlaw Council plan a number of celebration events across the area linked to the Mayflower Pilgrims. The 90+ cover gastro pub will be headed up by executive chef Darren Rogan. Darren, who was awarded the prestigious AA Rosette during his time at the Tower Hotel and Restaurant in Lincoln, will preside over a kitchen that will open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner, offering an eclectic modern menu to cater for all tastes, from bar meals at £12 for two courses to a la carte dishes featuring modern British dishes. Darren has spent 15 years working in kitchens, including a spell at the prestigious Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield. Until the opening in February, Darren headed up the kitchen at Caviars and he remains responsible there too with Billy Frost now being head chef. Whilst operating as a gastro pub with high class catering and all meals made on site,The Separatist will be attractively priced to appeal to a wide audience. Children will also be catered for with a special childrens menu. Over
in the bar – which will be open to non-diners – craft beers will be on offer along with a high quality selection of wines. The property has undergone an extensive refurbishment since The Huntsman closed in July 2015.The building has changed considerably internally with ceilings raised, new floors fitted, a new heating system installed and the whole building rewired alongside the new roof; all inside a 14-week build schedule. Visitors will notice the new open kitchen and lighting systems alongside the new decor. Director Kevin Firth says: “We have shed a lot of sweat, a little blood and a few tears on the refit of the building, but hopefully people who knew The Huntsman will recognise the effort that has gone into bringing the property up to modern standards. We had a fantastic bunch of tradesmen involved in the refurbishment and they have worked with us to transform the building in a very short space of time.” For menus and more information visit the website theseparatistinn.com

The Underwood’s butcher’s shops cater for everyone, whether it is spring lamb, tasty barbecue treats, winter casseroles or festive meats. A combination of bespoke, traditional butchery skills with delicious cuts of meat and a friendly smile makes Underwood’s butcher’s shops the place to buy fresh meats. The Rotherham butcher’s shop retail manager, Tony Burrows, has worked as a butcher for 29 years and says the products they offer in store are of the highest standard. “We supply other butchers and offer these same products to the public, almost at a wholesale price. By buying in volume we are able to keep the prices down and pass on the rewards to our customers.” Tony admits they are also big on quality testing. “When we introduce new products all my staff get involved in testing. It’s the best way to get honest feedback and they know how important it is to offer quality produce so customers return.” One of their most popular products is the family hamper, which includes an impressive selection of chicken fillets, steak, gammon, beef mince and diced beef and provides more than a week’s worth for an average family. They also have their own sausage factory in Chesterfield, which supplies their awardwinning sausages. “They really are delicious,” Tony said. “Our sausages come in all kinds of different flavours; chorizo, pork and apple, pork and parsley, tomato and basil. They really are worth a try.” While Underwood’s understands quality, their customer service is also second to none. When you walk into one of their shops you can be assured of no hard sells, and simply a warm welcome and a helping hand should you need anything. Tony said: “Every
