Meet the winners JEMMA AND ANDY ARE DELIGHTED TO WIN A STUNNING WEDDING TO REMEMBER AT THE EARL OF DONCASTER. horde of hopeful couples entered but we can finally reveal which lucky pair will be walking down the aisle courtesy of The Earl of Doncaster’s Win a Wedding competition with Eastside Magazine. Beating off stiff competition to scoop the grand prize – the opulent Ballroom Wedding Package - are Jemma Taylor and Andy Blackshaw of Swinton, near Rotherham, who will be exchanging vows on 17 February 2018. The pair, who met almost four years ago, have been engaged for two years, and after purchasing their first home together last year, have been searching for the perfect wedding venue ever since. “We were in complete shock when we found out we had won the competition.” Says Jemma. “We had gone to the Wedding Fayre to book our date and were absolutely delighted to win. We want to

say a huge thank you to The Earl of Doncaster Hotel for everything that they have done to support us. They have been very kind in allowing us to keep our original wedding date.” The result was announced at The Earl’s Wedding Fayre on Sunday 16 October, in the company of a number of Doncaster’s most reputable wedding suppliers and guests. With Chantal’s Perfect Day Florist suppling the winning couple’s luxurious floral bouquet. “The entire team at The Earl of Doncaster Hotel would like to say congratulations to our winning couple, Jemma and Andy,” said Marketing and E-Commerce Manager, Jonathan Bradwell. “It was our pleasure to be able to announce the couple as the winners of our Win a Wedding Package competition. Seeing their faces when they were told the news was a delight, and we are absolutely thrilled to have them join us for their special day. We are very happy for them and look forward to providing them with the day of their dreams. “Thank you to everyone who entered the
competition and came along to our last Wedding Fayre of the year. We had an excellent day and hope to see you all again soon.” The wedding will be organised by one of the Earl’s dedicated wedding planners and the winning couple will enjoy exclusive use of The Earl’s unique art deco ballroom all day. With gorgeous glass panels, rich blues, golds and reds, as well as its own bar and chandelier lighting, it is a beautiful venue to celebrate with family and friends. The wedding prize also includes chair covers, a glass of wine per person for the toast, wedding breakfast for up to 40 guests and an evening reception for up to 60 guests. The bride and groom will also be treated to a stay in a Junior Suite, one of The Earl’s most impressive rooms. “The ballroom is beautiful and we are planning a vintage Hollywood theme in line with the character of the building.” Jemma adds. “My fiancé Andy works for a local TV broadcasting company, and has a great passion for films, which has inspired our wedding theme. We are really excited to start planning.” The Earl has been holding wedding receptions for over 50 years, and offering civil weddings since 1995. So whatever type of wedding or wedding reception you would like, they have the experience, the venue, and the staff to create your dream day. Is your income suffering from record-low interest rates? Wealth management specialists Dale Murten Wealth Management explore your options.
I
ncome is important. It’s an obvious statement. The difficulty is that, in an uncertain world, investment income is hard to find right now. Investors looking for income have faced an increasing challenge ever since the financial crisis broke in 2008. Prudence and vigilance became the order of the day as financial institutions across the globe took extreme measures to protect themselves from global meltdown. Central Governments across the world also reacted strongly, forcing interest rates to record lows. Six years on and interest rates in the UK remain almost non-existent. The result is real losses for savers in bank and building society deposits which fail to match inflation.
With dividend payouts on the turn, the outlook for equity income funds could also be on the up. Equity income funds have a strong track record for delivering attractive, sustainable income and steady returns over the long term. But it is worth remembering that not all equity income funds are the same. Some are better for income, while others provide better prospects for total return investors through the reinvestment of income. St. James’s Place offers a range of equity income funds managed by investment managers with complementary styles.
Investors wanting to secure a better level of income have realised that they must look beyond traditional cash deposits.
Corporate bond funds which are, by their nature income producers, remain popular particularly with cautious investors. At St. James’s Place we firmly subscribe to the view that a diversified fixed interest strategy with exposure to investment grade, sub-investment grade and senior secured debt will help position your portfolio to benefit from growth across the credit spectrum.
History shows that investing in equities, or shares, has provided investors with a better chance of outpacing inflation over the long term versus other asset classes, particularly if the shares are able to increase the dividend payments year after year. Positively, there are indications that the recent trend of increasing dividend payments could be sustainable.
Commercial property felt the full effects of the credit crunch and the fall in property values left many investors nursing significant losses. But again, history suggests that commercial property has a place in a portfolio for income investors. Its long-term track record is strong and, importantly, it offers returns that are lowly correlated to other asset classes. Investors

should however note that investing in real asset classes (equities, corporate bonds and commercial property) does not provide the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit account with a bank or building society. The value of capital, and income from it, can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested. Those investing for income need to remember that no one asset class is the panacea. With uncertainty around interest rates, a welldiversified, well-managed portfolio which blends a range of asset classes remains the most suitable strategy for investors to satisfy their longer-term income needs. At St. James’s Place we believe that our ability to tailor solutions to an individual’s needs and attitude to risk means your income investments are in good hands. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

BEST DRESSED LADY
Elegant winner A RECORD NUMBER OF VOTES CROWNED KATRINA WARFORD-THOMPSON AS THIS YEAR’S ‘BEST DRESSED LADY’ AT THE LEGER FESTIVAL. he Ladbrokes Grand St Leger Festival is one of the most glittering events on the Doncaster social calendar, with Ladies’ Day being a particularly stylish occasion. Fashionistas from around the region gathered at the racecourse in the hope of being crowned Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2016 and we revealed our finalists in October’s magazine. Since then, votes have been flying in, with a record number being recorded on the Eastside website. We are thrilled to announce the winner of the Eastside Best Dressed Lady 2016 is Katrina Warford-Thompson, 24, from Wadworth. Katrina wore a stunning monochrome Isabella dress from Victoria House, Armthorpe, teamed with black heels and a black and white fascinator by Funky Fascinators, who supply Victoria House. Katrina works in the bridal department at Victoria House, so was in the perfect place to find her eye-catching outfit. “Buying a dress at independent boutiques helps local businesspeople,” said Katrina. “Plus as a customer you are getting a dress that is unique, you’re not going to see everyone else wearing it.” “Victoria House dresses are really classy
T
and elegant, and suitable for more than one occasion.” As well as selling race wear, Victoria House stocks a range of prom dresses, occasion wear and an extensive bridal range. Laura Mathewson, who has owned Victoria House for 18 months, says the boutique is popular with race-goers, with lots of women visiting the shop in the run up to the Leger.
Katrina’s prize: • Tickets for Doncaster Racecourse • A meal and overnight stay at Crab and Moo • A spa experience at Truffle Lodge • A restyle, treatment and blowdry at SJ Grooming • Nails from Red 10
Katrina Warford-Thompson (right) – Best Dressed Lady – with Laura Mathewson, owner of Victoria House
“It’s fantastic that Katrina has won,” said Laura. “She’s bought a few outfits from here and always looks stunning. She looked so elegant at the races, sometimes less is more, she looked gorgeous.” At Victoria House, Laura only ever buys one size of each dress, and makes a note of who buys what and which occasion they are wearing it too, so customers can avoid the embarrassing ‘same dress’ situation. “Shopping at independent boutiques is good for customers because they receive a one to one service, expert styling advice and made to order accessories. Our fascinators are made to match outfits, so customers do not have to trawl the high street.” Laura offers her customers an exclusive shopping experience, which is due to get even more exciting next year. “We’ve got exclusive brands coming in, I don’t want to name them yet but it’s going to be contemporary, and perfect for the races. We are also going to be stocking some brand new to the UK evening wear.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 17

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £30m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.qesportsvillage.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
A LEVEL RESULTS 2016 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 87% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 84% A*/B - A level results - 96% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 80% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 40% of the fees
Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
Photography by Mark Rodgers
All is revealed... YOU COULD HAVE CUT THE AIR WITH A KITCHEN KNIFE... ANTICIPATION WAS HIGH AS THE WINNERS OF THIS YEAR’S EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS WERE ANNOUNCED. PHOEBE SEYMOUR AND MOLLY McGREEVY REPORT. nce again, the best of the best turned out for the biggest and glitziest event on the restaurant calendar – the 2016 Eastside Restaurant Awards. As representatives from the region’s finest eating establishments gathered at The Crown Hotel for the fourth year, it was clear that the local dining scene continues to go from strength to strength. Now firmly established as the ultimate celebration of the diverse collection of restaurants in the Doncaster, Rotherham and the North Nottinghamshire area, the Eastside Restaurant Awards are a chance to showcase just what makes our local eateries so special. Greeted with a chilled glass of Prosecco, our guests gathered to toast the cream of the crop and to find out who had won the top prizes.

The judges had an enjoyable time assessing this years’ nominees, but as usual, choosing the winners was no easy task. Judging covered every aspect of the restaurant experience, from the quality of the food and service, to the ambience and cleanliness and it was only after much deliberation and debate that the final list of winners were chosen. Swiping this years’ ultimate prize as Eastside Restaurant of the Year was Caviars in Bawtry. Having already picked up the award for Best Contemporary, Caviars had impressed our judges with their cuttingedge cuisine and well-chosen wine list, along with their outstanding service and friendly atmosphere. Caviars had been shortlisted for the main prize, along with two other outstanding restaurants from the past 12 months – Roccos in Tickhill and The Separatist Inn in Retford.

The competition was tougher than ever and choosing the winners was challenging. Luckily, we had two independent judges on hand. Celebrity MasterChef 2010 contestant and BBC Doctors actor, Chris Walker, and school teacher Ramona Chapman both live locally and were only too happy to help us in our decision making. Chris has a passion for cooking and an even bigger passion for dining, having hosted a number of dinner parties in his time, as well as reaching the semi-finals in Celebrity MasterChef. Ramona lives in Bawtry and often dines in the local restaurants as a way to relax after a challenging day of work. Her familiarity with local eateries and Chris’ cooking expertise were invaluable to the deliberation process. The evening was co-hosted by Eastside managing editor, Chris Wilson and
publishing manager Terri Moore. Terri was joined by Eastside sales executive Rebecca Hume in presenting the winners with their awards. Both ladies looked stunning in Forever Unique and Jovani dresses from Chique, the Armthorpe boutique that dresses the region’s most stylish ladies. Once the awards had been dished out and the plates had been cleared, it was time to hit the dancefloor with some top tunes courtesy of DJ Paul of Eyeball Entertainments until the early hours. The Crown Hotel provided a spectacular venue for this glamourous event, and their six-course menu was absolutely delicious. Special thanks go to Craig Dowie and all the team at The Crown, who pulled out all the stops to make this year’s Eastside Restaurant Awards the biggest and best yet. Read on to discover who took home the prized trophies this year…

Best Contemporary Restaurant and Restaurant of the Year CAVIARS
DOUBLE WINNERS
Having scooped Best Contemporary and Restaurant of the Year awards, it was Caviars’ innovative take on modern British cuisine and an extensive, well curated wine list that really caught the judges’ eye. Kevin Firth, owner, said: “It feels absolutely fabulous to win, Caviars have been nominated four years in a row, it’s taken us a long time to win but I think with head chef Billy Frost’s hard work we’ve finally got the big prize. Billy is only 24 but he’s doing some great things in the kitchen.” Bruce Drummond, commercial director, said: “Our success is all about teamwork. The front of house staff, the kitchen staff, waiters and waitresses, they’ve all put the effort in and they will all benefit from the award, everyone’s really grafted, I’d like to say a huge congratulations to our team.”
Readers’ Choice COLEMAN’S PIZZERIA & STEAKHOUSE Having won last year’s Best Newcomer, owners John and Sarah Coleman were delighted to receive another award. The couple were on holiday so John’s father, Kevin Coleman, collected the award. “I’m delighted. I think it shows that my son must have inherited something from me,” joked Kevin. “I think it’s the staff that make them stand out. They work really hard.” John later added: “When we heard we’d not got Best Bar and Grill, we were gutted so this was a nice surprise. We are now looking to expand with a new restaurant in Doncaster and a gourmet take-away in Bawtry.” 26 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Our food is a bit more modern and a lot of different styles. We now have six boutique style bedrooms too and they’re all named after famous people related to the Mayflower Pilgrims. We couldn’t just have normal rooms, when we’ve got such strange food!”
Dual business Olive Lounge has been creating quite a buzz since it appeared in Wickersley a year ago with its lively cocktail bar downstairs and its relaxed Spanish-style restaurant upstairs. In fact, the restaurant just celebrated its one-year anniversary. “A lot of hard work has gone into this year,” said venue manager Jonathan Clough. “We’ve got our first birthday party coming up, so we’re celebrating with people from the area and thanking everyone for making us such a success. The staff have also made this possible. From kitchen to bar – they create everything to a high standard.”
Best Hotel Restaurant YE OLDE BELL
Best Newcomer CRAB & MOO
Relaxed dining in a grand setting with a versatile menu of pub classics, a la carte and daily specials has certainly paid off for Ye Olde Bell. General manager Kate Firth explains why head chef Tim Stamp’s molecular gastronomy, combined with the team’s service, are a winning combination: “We’re absolutely over the moon! We’ve got a very energetic team who all work together and that’s the thing – it’s all about teamwork and that’s what it’s about tonight. “We are proud of what we’ve achieved both back and front of house. We make creative food and deliver great customer service.”
Covering the whole ground floor of the Grand St Leger Hotel, this restaurant is in a prime position to offer chic décor and a menu with a varied selection of shellfish and meat dishes. “It’s really good to get the recognition because we’ve put a lot of hard work in,” said general manager, Mark Lawton. “It’s something Doncaster hasn’t had before. We’re trying to bring something new and it seems to have worked. We’ve just put a one kilo crab on the menu, which is going well. We’re keeping the steaks the same because people are saying they’re the best they’ve ever had. We made the decision to stick to the best because that’s what we were looking to achieve.”

EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS
Best Indian AAGRAH
Best Lunch BAWTRY’S BAR & BRASSERIE
The Doncaster division of a group of family-run Indian restaurants across Yorkshire, this well-established restaurant is becoming somewhat of a veteran at the Eastside Restaurant Awards, with its authentic recipes served in stylish surroundings winning over the region’s curry lovers year on year. Asif Ali, general manager, said: “It feels absolutely fantastic, we’ve won this award for three of four years in a row now and it feels great. It’s all about good quality food and good quality service, nothing else. We would like to thank all our customers and all those who support us.”
Having undergone somewhat of a transformation in recent years, in the daytime Bawtry’s is a busy café right in the centre of town. It’s contemporary look and menu courtesy of Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse makes it the place to be for a quick mid-day bite in Bawtry. Andy Miller, director, said: “It’s been amazing having Bawtry support us, and I like to think that we’ve supported Bawtry too, providing this fantastic venue. I’d like to thank all the staff and my business partner Andy Longworth. And Coleman’s as well, because they provide all our food. It’s all about providing what people want, good quality homemade food in a beautiful setting.”
Best Bar and Grill RELISH
Best Italian ROCCOS
Relish is one of Doncaster’s most lively spots, combining good food, drinks, great service and a friendly atmosphere. Relish’s cocktail menu and regular live music makes it a great destination for parties and celebrations whilst its menu provides an extensive range of pizzas, pastas, grills, burgers and daily specials. Owners Paul and Becky Moullali were absolutely delighted to win another Eastside restaurant award, having been victorious in the same category last year. Becky said: “It’s absolutely fantastic, we strive to win this. Our success is all down to sheer determination and hard work from our wonderful team, and loyalty from all our customers.”
Roccos Italian Kitchen brings authentic Italian cuisine to Tickhill. With heart-warming food, second to none service and a beautiful setting, Roccos was a worthy winner. Owner Alex Calzini said: “I am very proud, we’ve done very well, I would like to thank everyone that works at Roccos, every single member of staff. Manageress Alison Lomax and head chef Oliver Ellis have done a really good job, they’ve brought it on that extra step. “I think the biggest thing is the staff being true to the concept, everything is Italian. The sparkling water, the fruit juices, the beer, the lager, everything we’ve got is Italian and they’ve really bought into that.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 31

BY RACHEL MARTIN. s the great and good of the region’s restaurant scene gathered at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry for the fourth Eastside Restaurant Awards, Crab & Moo, which opened its doors as the newest and most spectacular addition to The Racecourse Restaurant Quarter earlier this year, bowled over the judges with a carefully hand-crafted menu of daring and diverse dishes, and was crowned the winner of the prestigious Best Newcomer Award. Inspired by their customers, the chefs at Crab & Moo have carefully handcrafted a selection of sundry dishes, from the finest dry aged steaks – aged on the bone for 21-28 days to give unbeatable flavour and succulence – to seafood from the waters of Cornwall, Kent, South America and the Indian Ocean. With most reaching the kitchen within 12 hours of being ocean caught. Hot on the heels of the esteemed award celebrations, arrives a new, bespoke website At the Eastside awards dinner
and winter menu, with new additions including Hot Jumbo Crab – a massive whole 1kg crab, scented with garlic and parsley butter – and the highly-anticipated Bengal Tiger Prawns – from the Indian Ocean. For those looking for a lighter bite, Crab & Moo also offer a reduced lunch menu, and a farm-to-plate children’s menu (£6.95) to fuel those after-school cravings. This December Crab & Moo will be offering diners even more variety, with the addition of a Christmas lunch, Christmas dinner and Christmas Day lunch menu. Extra special event IN THEIR 30TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR, ROBINSONS OF BAWTRY’S ANNUAL FASHION ATTRACTED ANOTHER SELL-OUT CROWD, RAISING LOTS OF MONEY IN THE PROCESS. hina Rose restaurant hosted the 24th annual Robinsons of Bawtry Fashion Show on Sunday 2 October 2016, with guests enjoying an evening of catwalk shows, choreographed sets, great food and amazing entertainment. It’s an event which famously sells out months in advance. Following in the footsteps of London Fashion Week the team at Robinsons of Bawtry held a show-stopping evening which showcased its autumn/winter collection with seven exciting scenes bringing brands to life with models, dancers and choreography supplied by local company Strutz Models & Dance Academy. The glittering event, created by Tony Robinson following the passing of his wife Jeanette, has raised over £320,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research in the years since it was founded 24 years ago, with the latest show raising tens of thousands more for the amazing cause. “It was fantastic to host this extra special event at the China Rose restaurant in Bawtry, the venue that we have enjoyed for each of our 24 shows.” said Russell Jones Director

Robinsons of Bawtry. “This year’s auction raised £11,500 and we hope that once all the final figures are in for all the fundraising activities the event will have raised in excess of £14,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research bringing our total since the event began to over £330,000.” Leading contemporary fashion labels including Armani, Hugo Boss, Mulberry, Escada, Jacob Cohen, Belstaff, Michael Kors, Moschino, Jeffery West, Eton and new for this season Max Mara were exhibited on the runway as guests enjoyed a delicious Cantonese meal, entertainment from Jazz Singer Loretta Bird, a tribute to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, The Jerseys, and close up magician Oliver Parker. “Thanks also go to our sponsors Alexander Calder Financial Challenge and Powell Engineering plus the fabulous support received from Elite Hair, Freemantle Media, Ski Olympic and Doncaster Racecourse,” said Russell. “It was an amazing way to celebrate 30 years in business with loyal friends and customers and hosting another successful fundraising
evening for this charity that is very close to our hearts made it extra special.” Charles Rowett, Chief Executive Officer at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We are delighted that Robinsons once again chose to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research and we would like to congratulate Russell and the team on the shop’s 30th anniversary. “The money raised through the fashion show over the past two decades has had a huge impact in our aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in Yorkshire. As cancer incidence rates continue to increase, the continued support of local businesses like Robinsons will be vital in helping us raise awareness of the disease and how to prevent it, promote screening programmes to increase early detection and fund innovative research projects, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.” Robinsons is located at 2 South Parade, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JH and the team can be contacted on 01302 711477 or by visiting www.robinsonsofbawtry.com Opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9.30am–5.30pm; Sunday 11am–4pm and late night opening by appointment.

THEATRE
Artistic director Simon Carr
Barbara Upton
Behind the curtain INTIMATE, INSPIRING AND WELCOMING TO ALL. YOU’LL BE SURPRISED AT WHAT YOU MIGHT FIND AT DONCASTER LITTLE THEATRE. here’s a blue building in the centre of Doncaster on King Street. It’s not exactly hidden, but apart from its glowing vertical sign, it’s unassuming. However, for the last 21 years, Doncaster Little Theatre (DLT) has proven that it’s what’s inside that counts. As well as hosting a wide range of plays, musicals and pantos, the theatre group is keen to give actors and actresses a fantastic start to their career. They run children’s workshops every Saturday during term time with two-hour sessions for juniors and older children. They’ve even had a few success stories. Thomas Howes started out at the theatre and went on to be a professional actor, making appearances in the first series of Downtown Abbey and on stage for The History Boys. The theatre group is also working towards introducing more workshops for adults with an open evening welcoming newcomers every first Monday of the month. “It’s a great chance to come see what we do,” says company secretary Barbara Upton. “Some come to act, but we also need people behind the scenes helping to build sets, work on the technical side of things or to work on the box office or bar.” The group are a not-for-profit voluntary company and, though they have had loyal team members with them for a number of years – Barbara being one of them for the
T
past 20 years – they are always on the lookout for new volunteers. Barbara has always had a passion for the arts and started out at DLT as a box office manager. She was then treasurer for seven years and went on to act, write and direct. She now runs children’s workshops and directs plays as the Young Lit director, as well as being an adult director. On top of all this, she has been the company secretary for nearly six years. “It’s good fun and you get to meet lovely people,” she enthuses. “To get to 21 years is an achievement. It’s a testament to the people – past and present – who’ve helped make the theatre what it is today. “It’s rewarding to see children becoming more confident, as well as some vulnerable adults who’ve been helped in all sorts of ways.” They put on three children’s shows and a number of dramas each year – most of which, Barbara writes herself. Rehearsals
Anything Goes was a big hit, as was last month’s production of Kitchen Sink, directed by Barbara and Tom Wells, and the next couple of months promise to be just as exciting Carr-nival Academy of Theatre Skills’ production of A Fairy Tale Ending will be taking place on 22 and 23 November, followed by a production of Merry Christmas Mr Scrooge at 7pm on 25 and at 2pm and 7pm on 26 November. Then, it’s panto season with a familyfriendly performance of Hansel and Gretel from 16 to 31 December – also written by Barbara. Their Afternoon Cabaret every Friday at 2pm has been a hit with older audiences too. If none of that takes your fancy, they even put on films. Catch a special family screening of festive film, The Polar Express from 21 to 24 December, courtesy of Cinemama. Whatever you choose to see at DLT, you’re guaranteed a great night. “It’s intimate – a 99 person capacity – and there’s a good view, wherever you sit,” adds Barbara. “People say they come back because of the atmosphere and because they feel a part of what’s going on on stage.” To find out more about what’s on at Doncaster Little Theatre, visit www.doncasterlittletheatre.co.uk or call 01302 340422. he world-famous sing-a-long-a format has been delighting audiences for decades so we went to see what it was all about at CAST with The Rocky Horror Picture Show Singa-Long... surely the campest cult classic of all time. Filmed in 1975 with Tim Curry as Frank ‘n’ Furter, Susan Sarandon as Janet, Richard O’Brien as Riff Raff and Meatloaf as Eddie, it’s the craziest, most action-packed, romantic, scary Transylvanian party of all time. I was amazed at the effort audience members – both men and women – had gone to for the fancy dress. They looked fantastic, and while dressing up is strictly optional it was clear than more than half of them had dressed to the theme. To help everyone get into the spirit, audience members were given a goodie bag by a doorman wearing a corset and suspenders – an inkling of what was to come. The show began with a fancy dress competition, and this got the audience up on stage and interacting straight away. The audience was led through some dance moves to a couple of the songs on the film and told what the items in the goodie bag were for and when they should be used... when to wear the blue rubber glove or shout out the explicit words shown on the cards. The film was then played with a 15-minute interval, and with every song lyric shown on the screen, mass audience participation was guaranteed. Some naughty people even yelled out when they weren’t told to. Clearly, a lot of people really know and love their Rocky Horror! It’s easy to see why. We danced to the Time Warp and sang along to Sweet Transvestite, and laughed a hell of a lot! You could get involved as much or as little you wanted, but the more you did the more you enjoyed it. This was a fantastic evening, and you don’t need to be a die-hard fanatic to get involved. The film was released before I was born and I’d only ever seen it once, but it made for a refreshingly different Friday night and was something new everyone should try. I’m up for more... maybe next time I’ll be Dirty Dancing!

Weddings in wonderland TURN YOUR BIG DAY INTO A ROMANTIC WINTER-THEMED FAIRYTALE AT THE CROWN HOTEL. littering snowflakes cascading down sparkling icicles, twinkling crystals filling the skies, a bride in a white fur bolero stood with her groom on the crisp white snow in the landscaped garden. Winter weddings at The Crown are a real life wonderland. Traditionally, wedding season has run from May to September but as more and more couples choose to marry in the cooler months, winter wonderland weddings are increasingly on trend. At The Crown, there are wedding packages to suit all budgets and requirements, and the hotel can recommend the best suppliers and services to ensure each wedding is the perfect day. The Crown is dedicated to transforming either of their function rooms into a simply stunning wedding venue. Couples can choose between The Hogarth Suite, which can accommodate for up to 250 guests and leads out into The Crown’s secret landscaped garden, or The Leger Suite, which can accommodate up to 60 guests. The Crown works with White Rose Occasions to create the perfect setting for any wedding, from a winter wonderland theme to a warmer wintry theme featuring cranberry reds and golds right through to a Christmas theme. Janette, of White Rose Occasions, said: “Any theme people want, we can create it. When a bride comes to us with a theme we are able to make the room look stunning,

and exactly to the couple’s taste.” One incredibly popular theme at The Crown is the winter wonderland theme, which features ivory table clothes and chair coverings, crystals cascading down vases filled with beautiful flowers, snowflakes on the tables and name cards set in snow globes. White Rose Occasions offer a range of packages, ranging from £450 to £850. All packages include the use of The Crown’s custom made ceiling drapes, centre pieces and favors, a post box, top table and cake table dresses, table crystals, table plan and easel, place cards and table numbers. To ensure everything goes smoothly on the day, The Crown has a dedicated events team, available seven days a week. The team will help with any queries in the run up to the big day, being the first point of contact for couples. On the wedding day itself, The Crown will provide a Master of Ceremonies, who will look after the couple and guests, making sure everything is as stress free as possible for the bride and groom.

Things are changing at Hellaby Hall
Members of the Bawtry and Doncaster branch of the British Heart Foundation
Bake it, bag it, beat it The Bawtry & Doncaster branch of the British Heart Foundation hosted their BAKE IT BAG IT BEAT IT event at Bawtry New Hall. Local close up magician Nigel Francis provided the entertainment and Charlotte Speight from Cherry Blossom Cakes at Bawtry judged the Bake Off competition with winners in four categories: Most Delicious, Best Decorated Heart Themed Cake, Cutest Cup Cake and Junior Bake. As well as raising over £300 at the event they also collected nearly 40 bags of unwanted items that were then donated to the local BHF shop to help raise funds for life saving heart research. The new owners of the historic Hellaby Hall Hotel in Rotherham are well underway with improvements to this popular 4 star hotel. The Lavin Family acquired the hotel at the start of 2016 for £5.6m and had previously bought Aston Hall Hotel in 2012 to add to their portfolio including The West Retford Hotel. Hellaby Hall is a Grade II listed building and is the converted 17th Century House of Ralph Fretwell. It today consists of 89 bedrooms some of which are located in the original house and is a popular location for weddings, Christmas, functions and conference. It also has an award-winning Carnelly Restaurantand has a health and leisure club with two gyms and large swimming pool. The hotel is excited to be opening a new chapter in its history and with considerable investment and the appointment of new personnel, including new sales manager, Sarah Myatt to drive the venue forward. Part of the work undertaken so far on improvements at the venue includes work to the outdoor grounds and gardens. The bedrooms and corridors are also on a scheduled of refurbishment. The wi-fi in the hotel has also been improved with the installation of dedicated bandwith of 100mb. The spa has had a total refurbishment with four new treatment rooms and also a relaxation room installed. It also has had a change of name to The Fretwell Spa and is offering both day and overnight spa packages plus encouraging locals to use the venue for nail, brows and beauty treatments.
Rhinos are the latest arrivals at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park has welcomed two critically endangered black rhinos. The two-year-olds – Hodari and Dayo travelled 800 miles from their birth place of Berlin Zoo. The pair, each weighing about 750 -880 kg (when mature they will weigh up to 1500 kg), were very lively on arrival and it was a delicate operation to manoeuvre the crate into position and release them into their new purpose-built house. They will settle in for a few days and get to know the rangers before venturing out into their extensive reserve in the Africa section of the Park. Animal Collection Manager Simon Marsh said: "We are really excited about the arrival of Hodari and Dayo as they are so critically endangered in the wild. It is great that we are now part of the European breeding programme and will be working tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for black rhino in the wild. Yorkshire Wildlife Park brings visitors almost face to face with some of the world's most rare and beautiful animals including Amur leopards and tigers, lions, squirrel monkeys, anteaters, the country’s only four polar bears and many more. Since the first festival in 2013, TFest has continued to be the talking point of the town, not just in Tickhill but throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas, and this year was no exception, bringing everyone together for a much bigger and better festival experience. “Planning TFest for Simon, Steve and I takes blood, sweat and tears but when we see you all enjoying the music, eating and drinking and dancing and, most importantly, memory making with your family and

friends, I can tell you it makes every single tear worth it,” says co-organiser Jennifer Hall. “Thank you to every one of you who came to the event, who bought tickets and programmes and supported our stall holders. “A HUGE thank you also goes to the TFest crew, who are actually pretty small in number but work like an army. Without our volunteers on the day, without our reliable suppliers, without our sponsors, without the amazing talent of our bands who quite frankly blew us away this year, there would be no TFest – we simply couldn’t do it. “Next year is already in the planning – watch this space for the date – and from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.” For more information on TFest visit www.t-fest.co.uk

The trouble with sleeping
Q&A: Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. www.elizabethannbawtry.com
Dear Liz,
Will I ever stop worrying? Anxiety is my nightly problem. I worry about everything and don’t feel that I can cope until daylight hits. By then I’m too tired to get going! Any suggestions to help? Sandra, Doncaster
ARE THERE ANY TECHNIQUES TO HELP YOU CONQUER THOSE DREADED SLEEPLESS NIGHTS? ELIZABETH ANN THERAPIES GOES IN SEARCH OF SOME DECENT REST. o you wake in the night? Whenever we are stressed, we will wake at unusual hours in the night, usually from 2am to 4am, and then find trouble getting back to sleep. If this feels familiar, how can we stop that internal alarm going off? One common reaction is to get out of bed and start pacing around. Instead, try doing a mini-meditation. Lie on your back, take a few relaxed breaths, and then imagine an object like a candle or a flower... something simple. Once you’ve got this in focus, let your thoughts come and go naturally. If they intrude, just refocus on your chosen image. This helps you stay in the moment and releases worries and stress. Continue for a few minutes until you feel calmer and sleepy. If that’s not cutting it for you, why not try another method... give yourself a worry time every day. Set aside 15 minutes every day to confront those problems but don’t worry at any other times. If you start to worry, stop and think to yourself: ‘I’ll save that for my worry time.’ Then, when you reach your worry time, the original worry will probably be diminished or disappeared completely.
D
Dear Sandra,
We know that a chattering brain is tiring; meditation is a good way of calming the mind. Give the above meditation a try, or yoga is another good way of helping anxiety, along with certain breathing techniques and also hypnotherapy. Try using the worry time method too... you’ll be amazed at how it works. All of the above are available with me @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. BEAUTY
Keep your glow BEAT THE WORST THE WINTER CAN THROW AT YOUR SKIN WITH ELEMENTS MEDISPA. he cold weather is finally here and with this seasonal change also comes a change in our skin and complexion. During the harsh cold and blustery months our skin can lose tone and vitality, often becoming dry, dull and sallow. Fine lines and wrinkles become more apparent and extra care and attention is needed. With that in mind, Elements MediSpa has put together a selection of winter ‘must-have’ treatments for the face and body, to help you maintain that flawless summer glow all year round. Elements offer medical grade skincare products - only available through specialised clinics - including Z.O. and DermaQuest, which complement the amazing skin and Aesthetic treatments they have to offer. The fact that medical grade skin care products produce such great results has to do with the ability of the high-performance ingredients which penetrate through the top layer of skin. These products work at the dermis (or middle layer of the skin), where collagen and elastin are contained and the basal (or bottom layer of the skin), where new skin cells are produced.
T
Over the counter products, however, work only on the epidermis (the very top layer of skin), they do not have the ability to reach, nor affect the important structures and layers deeper in the skin. The Bed Shop Doncaster ALWAYS THE BEST FOR PRICE AND ADVICE. ow is a great time to throw out the old and bring in the new. This is especially true for beds. As the years go by, your mattress may not be giving you the same comfort and support it once did. Whether you are looking for a simple single bed or a king size bed with added storage space, The Bed Shop on Hallgate, Doncaster is brimming with three floors full of sleep inspiration. The Bed Shop was established over 40 years ago and although there are five branches in total, they still consider themselves a local business for local people. Having been around for so long, The Bed Shop has seen its excellent reputation grow, resulting in a lot of repeat and word-ofmouth business. Keith Winter, store manager says: “Being such a long-standing business means people have built up a lot of trust with us. It’s very rare that anyone has any problems with our products, but it’s reassuring for customers to know that if they did we would still be here to sort it out for them. “Our excellent customer service has given us a great reputation and it’s always nice to be recommended by others – it happens a lot.

They can also dispose of your old bed. The shop has the lowest prices and many offers. Their main offer at the moment is a free upgrade to a king size bed if you buy a double on selected models, and drawers free of charge. So if you are looking for a bed that leaves you feeling well rested and which puts the spring back in your step this season, The Bed Shop showroom is the place to go.
