Quoting you Happy IS HAPPY SALES AND LETTINGS S35’S LOWEST PRICED ESTATE AGENT? OWNER ALAN LEVICK THINKS SO. he way that sales and lettings agents operate has changed a lot since the internet came along. And now, there is a greater focus on websites than ever before. This is true of Happy Sales and Lettings, but unlike other internet-only estate agents, their marketing fees are the same low prices in their Chapeltown branch, as they are on their website. “Gone are the days when you have to pay an estate agent a huge fee,” says owner Alan Levick. “You won’t find a cheaper sales and lettings agency in S35. We guarantee to be unbeatable on price – not just now, but always.” The agency based in Chapeltown first opened as Key Properties in 2011, before relaunching as Happy Sales and Lettings in April this year. As the new and improved business on the block, they pride themselves on being the most competitive on price, but you’ll never find them skimping on the quality of their property listings or their services. “I always use this analogy; CDs used to be £12.99 and now you can get them for £5. The quality of the CD hasn’t changed, but the way that we buy and sell them has.” Alan and the team also pride themselves on their reliable and friendly service, as their many recommendations and thank you cards can testify, and as someone who has worked and lived in S35 most of his life, Alan has a wealth of knowledge about the area’s property market.

T

Thinking about selling your home? Happy Sales and Lettings have two payment plans for 2016: I OPTION ONE costs £599 (subject to VAT) upfront and includes a for sale board, web advertising including a listing on www.rightmove.co.uk, a listing on www.onthemarket.com plus other websites, unlimited office marketing material, monthly updates about your property and no completion fee. I OPTION TWO costs £1,199 (subject to VAT) to be paid on completion and includes a for sale board, a listing on www.rightmove.co.uk, a listing on www.onthemarket.com plus other websites, unlimited office marketing material and monthly updates about your property. And for a limited time, mention Pulse and get a further £100 off the above offers (valid until the end of 2016). Happy Sales and Lettings guarantee to be the lowest priced local agent. If you find a lower quote on any estate agency fees or services in the S35 area, contact Alan and the team who will be happy to beat it. CHARITY

Three... and not quite so easy FORGET BROKEN BOILERS AND LEAKING RADIATORS, BUMFORDS’ STAFF ARE FACING THEIR TOUGHEST CHALLENGE TO DATE – TACKLING THE YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHARITY. hoever said charity starts at home had obviously never worked in a place like Bumfords. On Saturday 3 September, a group of colleagues from the plumbing and heating company based in Hoyland, will be undertaking The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The Yorkshire Three Peaks route is 24 miles long and will take in the Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough mountains in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. With the highest peak reaching a mighty 736 metres (2,415ft), it will be no easy task. So what inspired them to get involved? “I’ve got a love of walking and hiking so I’ve always walked in the Lake District,” says managing director Neil Bumford. “One of the guys in our office, Tom Squires, did The Three Peaks and came back raving about it and that germinated an idea in our heads.

W

10 Pulse | www.sheffieldvibe.com

“We asked around the office and before we knew it, we’d rustled up ten or 11 of us to do the walk. So it inspired all of us really. It was a lightbulb moment and we all jumped on it.” This will be made more challenging by the fact that the team are also working against the clock. Three or four Bumfords vans will be setting off from the Hoyland office at 5am. As the challenge is expected to take 12 hours, Neil and the team want to make sure they finish before sundown. Each team member has a different level of fitness and is preparing in their own way. “We’re all spurring each other on and not a day goes by that it doesn’t get mentioned in the company. People are trying to get a bit fitter and get ready mentally and physically so come the day, they’re ready. “Some are going to do the Penistone Boundary, which is a big 15-mile walk. It’s relatively flat, but still a decent taster walk.” The team are aiming to raise £500 for The @PulseRMC

Children’s Hospital Charity and with a current total of £260, Neil is more than confident they will reach their target. Businesses who work with Bumfords have also been keen to get involved, with the most impressive donation so far being a £100 donation from toilet parts manufacturer, Siamp. When it came to choosing a charity, Neil wanted to find a local cause which most of his employees had utilised at some point. “We are local people so we want to benefit a local charity,” says Neil, who lives with his family in Chapeltown. “Most of those walking have got kids. I’ve got three kids and I’ve taken them all to the hospital for various things such as breaks and sprains, so I’ve used the services at the Children’s Hospital many times. So in that respect, it’s more tangible than most other charities. “We’ve reached out to the hospital. They know what we are doing and are very supportive.”

CHARITY

Staff member Tom Squires has previously completed the challenge

Tonya Kennedy, events fundraiser for The Children’s Hospital Charity added: “We’re so pleased that Bumfords Heating are choosing to support Sheffield Children’s Hospital with their Three Peaks walk. It’s a real challenge and we can’t wait to see how they get on, on the day. We are sure they will smash their fundraising target!” The money raised from The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge will go towards The Children’s Hospital Charity Make It Better appeal which is transforming the hospital with a brand new wing. The new wing will feature a spacious outpatients department, three wards with 66 per cent single rooms and landscaped areas for respite and fresh air. And though raising money for the charity is the main aim of the challenge, Neil explains that it will also be a great chance for employees to get to know each other better. “It’ll be good because we will have people in the company that don’t usually work together or know each other very well,” continues Neil. “Even though we are a relatively small company of 20 staff, we don’t necessarily cross paths, so they’ll be people from all parts of the business, from the warehouse to the installers to the IT people to me as MD. “We will all be working together – and I dare say – bonding as well. We will all be in it together. It’ll be good not just as a way to raise money, but as a good team building exercise as well.”

“We’re all spurring each other on and not a day goes by that it doesn’t get mentioned in the company. People are trying to get a bit fitter and get ready mentally and physically so come the day, they’re ready.” – Neil Bumford

PROFILE

Striking out for bigger things BETH GABBITAS DREAMS OF THE BIG STAGE – AND IS WELL ON HER WAY TO ACHIEVING HER AMBITIONS. eep an ear out for the latest rising star on the Sheffield music scene... and grab the opportunity to see her performing locally before she strikes out for bigger stages. Beth Gabbitas is becoming a familiar fixture and winning lots of admirers for her stunning live performances at venues such as the Wortley Arms, Baldwins Omega and the Bridge Inn. This talented 18-year-old is studying for her Performing Arts triple BTEC, having already completed an A-level in drama last year. Next step on the rapid learning curve for Beth will hopefully be a move to the Guildford School of Acting in September 2017 to study musical theatre. Beth went to Guildhall summer school last year for an acting workshop, and this summer she will be at Guildford School of Acting for a musical theatre workshop.

K

Passionate about music and acting, these are all significant steps on the way to what Beth hopes will be a career on the West End stage. Beth has been performing since the age of seven via Stage Coach Sheffield, Take 2 Birdwell and 412 Productions Pontefract, alongside various school and college productions. She says: “I love how the art of theatre evokes emotion in other people – it is an amazing thing to be able to do. Meanwhile her performances on local stages have increased Beth’s passion for singing live in front of an audience. “With an intimate gig, it’s so great to be able to see the reaction from the audience up close. Having expanded her repertoire by singing at weddings, Beth is finding herself increasingly in demand as brides-to-be request her to sing them down the aisle, with bookings stretching into the next two years.

As well as loving musicals (taking the role of Eponine in Les Miserables would be her dream) Beth also derives inspiration from modern music icons such as Adele and Amy Winehouse, and her powerful voice is well suited to anything from soul and ballads to songs from the musicals and rock numbers from the likes of Queen. Meanwhile Beth is doing her bit for the charity Young Minds by having her hair shaved off on Monday 29 August (6pm). She believes strongly that teenage depression is on the rise and needs to be in the spotlight. To find out more, see Beth on Twitter (@BethGEntertain) or on Facebook (www.facebook.com/BethGabbitasEntertainment) To sponsor her, visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiserweb/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action ?userUrl=BethanyGabbitas

The Sandersons team (from left): Managing director Deborah Holmes, assistant manager Kara Chapman, beauty ambassador Armand Beasley and manager Lisa Fox

The ultimate shopping experience INSPIRED BY THE WORLD’S BEST RETAILERS, THE NEW SANDERSONS BOUTIQUE DEPARTMENT STORE AT FOX VALLEY OFFERS A FANTASTIC MIX OF MUST-HAVE BRANDS. heffield’s newest department store is preparing to open its doors at Fox Valley next month with a top class team who are planning to bring a bit of theatre back into retail. The brand new Sandersons Boutique Department Store takes pride of place at the Fox Valley development in Stocksbridge. The shopping centre’s first phase was officially opened by Joanna Lumley OBE in June and Sandersons’ managing director Deborah Holmes is looking forward to bringing a host of fantastic brands to the area. Deborah, who was brought up in Stocksbridge and still lives in north Sheffield, said: “We have taken a little bit of inspiration from one of my favourite stores in the world - Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue in New York. “We’ve blended this with inspiration from the fabulous retail offerings of independent department stores in our region such as Browns of York and Barkers in Northallerton. “We can’t wait to open the doors now and for customers to see all of our ideas and the lovely fashion, beauty and homewares brands that we have in store.” The main challenge was to offer something that is not available elsewhere in the region. Sandersons has done that with a fantastic mix of must-have brands including Ted Baker, Phase 8, White Stuff and Barbour alongside others that are new to north Sheffield such as In-Wear, Onjenu and Masai. They’ll also be joined by some great local products from Sheffield’s own British Silverware and The Sheffield Pewter Company, all making Sandersons a truly unique retail experience. “We have chosen brands which I hope really speak to the area and the customers we’ll attract - primarily fashion-conscious

S

ladies who have as much of an interest in premium clothing and beauty as they do in the fantastic countryside we have in this part of north Sheffield,” said Deborah. One of the most exciting and unique features of the new store is the involvement of the skincare expert, international make-up artist and presenter, Armand Beasley. Armand

is Sandersons’ skincare and beauty ambassador and will ensure that everyone gets five-star treatment in the bespoke cosmetics department. Armand has created looks for Hollywood royalty like Goldie Hawn and international royalty, including HRH the Sultanah of Pahang – and he has been a BAFTA make-up artist spokesman. He has also featured in magazines including Vogue and Grazia, on Channel 4's How to Look Good Naked, Channel 5’s Celebrity Super Spa and ITV’s This Morning. “As well as training our own girls in skincare and make-up and offering makeovers himself, he has curated the beauty department, so we have the most fantastic brands including Benefit, Inika and Make-Up Atelier Paris,” said Deborah. Premium fragrances, specialist skincare, gorgeous menswear and the most fabulous homeware complete Sandersons’ retail offering. When you can shop no longer, you’re invited to take a seat in Sandersons’ beautiful Yorkshire Tea Rooms. Taking the role of manager is Lisa Fox, who lives in the area and has worked in retail for over 15 years. “We interviewed several people for the position but Lisa was the stand-out candidate by a country mile,” enthused Deborah. “Like us, Lisa is all about exceptional customer service and she is also very much a part of the local community so it’s the perfect fit.” Don’t miss the Sandersons golden ticket opening at 11am on 1 September, when the first 100 customers will receive a fabulous free gift and one lucky shopper will walk away with a £500 Sandersons gift card. www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk

LOOKING BACK

LEFT: Mark Smith, 1981 BELOW: Prize-winners and bronze medal winner Mark Smith congratulated by Light Products GM Michael Webber, 1981

Following in his father’s footsteps... MEMORIES ON THE HISTORY OF THE FOX VALLEY SITE HAVE BEEN FLOODING IN... HERE’S JUST A SNAPSHOT OF WHAT YOU CAN REMEMBER ABOUT THE FORMER STEELWORKS. ast month we celebrated the launch of Fox Valley, Stockbridge’s new retail development, by looking back at the site’s history as a steel manufacturer. Samuel Fox established a wire-drawing business in 1842, before Samuel Fox & Co. formed the United Steel Company in 1918 and for the next 50 years, specialised in producing steel springs, alloy and other stainless steel. We asked you to write in if you had any stories or memories of working at Fox Springs. Clarence Smith wrote in to tell us that he worked in the Spring Mill from 1964 until its closure in 1985. He said: “I was still there when they were taking everything out. It was going to Tinsley and there were only three of us cleaning it out; John Wright – the manager at the time, the foreman of the machine shop and me. I used to regulate the springs and was a forklift driver.”

IN BRIEF

SCHOOL PUPILS PROMOTE SAFE SWIMMING More than 600 pupils from schools in Barnsley have taken part in a campaign that highlights the dangers of water during the summer holidays. Olivia Guy from Ladywood Primary School was the Olivia Guy from Ladywood Primary School shows off her winner of the design winning design with BPL mascot Derek the Dolphin competition organised by leisure operators BPL. Her design has been transformed into posters, free swim vouchers, bookmarks and certificates which will be distributed across the Barnsley borough to raise awareness of swim safety for young people. The BPL team of swim ambassadors will also be heading to other schools in the borough to educate young people on the dangers of water in the summer months. Simon Ferrarelli, BPL corporate aquatics manager said: “Swim safety, especially around the summer months, is extremely important and if we can raise awareness through a great competition that allows the winning design to be the visual for the campaign, that’s fantastic. “We have had a great response from the schools in Barnsley since we launched the campaign four years ago - this year being the best by a long way!” For more information about the BPL swim school, visit www.bpl.org.uk or call 01226 730060.

EATING OUT

Safe in the knowledge UNSURE WHAT TO HAVE? THE SERVICE AT BUTLER’S BALTI HOUSE COMES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, WRITES MOLLY McGREEVY. nly recently they were crowned Best Indian at the Westside Restaurant Awards, so expectations were high on our recent visit to Butler’s Balti House. Poppadoms (70p each) and pickle tray (£2.50) were brought over whilst we chose our dishes, with an impressive seven pickles to choose from in a range of spice levels. To start we both chose pakoras; the paneer (£3.50) for myself and the chicken tikka (£3.50) for my companion. Both dishes were light, crispy and the chicken in particular was full of rich, tikka flavours. Our waiter, Sal, had worked as a chef in Indian restaurants around the city before leaving the kitchen in favour of front of house work – and his experience showed. Despite only recently starting at Butler’s, he knew the menu inside out, talking us through the ingredients and tastes of a few of his personal favourites, as well as those that his customers love. For my companion he recommended the balti baruchi (£8.50), a customer favourite he says he’s served hundreds of times in his nine weeks working at the Broad Lane restaurant. Despite my very specific likes and

O

dislikes – vegetarian, spicier than mild, but also not too hot, and no mushrooms – Sal decided the balti paneer tikka karahi (£6.95) would be perfect for my fussy taste. Both mains were served sizzling in traditional, cast-iron balti pots, a nod to Butler’s commitment to authentic Indian food done well. The balti baruchi, a mediumspiced chicken dish with potatoes, onions, tomatoes and peppers, came with the unusual garnish of fried onions. My companion was dubious of the topping at first, but his opinion soon changed and by the end of the meal he had decided that all curries should be adorned with crispy onions. At Butler’s, all the paneer is handmade by their chefs and the freshness of the ingredient really stood out in my main. There was a generous portion of the cheese, which is similar to cottage cheese and used in a lot of Asian dishes, and it had been flavoured beautifully using a blend of aromatic spices. Before dessert we spoke to Butler’s owner Sajid Quader who told us about his latest venture on the first floor of the restaurant. Saj is launching a new menu of Chinese food @PulseRMC

with an Indian twist and hopes it will appeal to the high number of students living in the area. For dessert I opted for the mango kulfi (£3.25), a refreshing, traditional Indian pudding which offered just the right amount of sweet after such a flavoursome meal. I felt it right to keep to a traditional dish because everything at Butler’s is authentic, from the music playing, through to the hospitality and the brilliant food. These Westside award winners are definitely living up to their title. Butlers Balti House 44-46 Broad Lane, Sheffield, S1 4BT Tel: 0114 276 8141 www.butlersbalti.com

A personalised experience WELCOME TO UNIVERSITY CAMPUS BARNSLEY. niversity Campus Barnsley (UCB) offers HNC/Ds and degrees for students aged 18+ from all over the country. Many students progress from college onto a Higher Education course at UCB without leaving home, while others want to return to studying as mature learners after time in work, or are looking for a career change. UCB offers great facilities in its town centre campus and the smaller class sizes and affordable course fees make for a much more personalised university experience. Here at UCB we think carefully about your future career prospects – after all, we know that the main reason you want to continue studying is to get the job you want at the end of it. By studying at UCB you will benefit from high academic standards, expert staff who are passionate about their subjects, excellent facilities and, on many courses, professional experience through placements. This means that by the time you graduate you’ll already have a CV to be proud of. We also have some excellent facilities. With smaller class sizes there is no waiting around to use equipment. Our Music students can access mixing desks and recording studios. In the Media department you can get to grips with a motion capture suite, HD and 4K cameras, Steadicam, professional green screen and computer labs with industry standard media software. Our Art students have access to workshops and studios dedicated to different disciplines. Animal Management students are based at our working farm and Sports students can make use of the great

facilities at Honeywell Sports Campus. Our tuition fees are £5,995* per year for full-time courses. Part-time course fees are calculated on a course-by-course basis. You may be eligible for a loan to cover your tuition fees and help with living costs. Students don’t pay – graduates pay. You only begin to pay back your loan once you start working and earn more than £21,000 per year. On average, graduates earn £12,000 a year more than non graduates over their working lives.** A huge range of full and part-time HNC/Ds and degrees are offered in the following subject areas: E 615)4 )6)/-5-6< E :< )6, -;1/6 E =<757<1>- 6/16--:16/ 7<7:;87:< E =;16-;; E 758=<16/ )6, #A;<-5; ->-4785-6< E 76;<:=+<176 )6, ":72-+< )6)/-5-6< E ):4A (-):; E 6/16--:16/ E 6<-:8:1;- )6, 6<:-8:-6-=:;018 E :)801+ -;1/6 E )1: )6, -)=<A )6)/-5-6< E 7;81<)41<A )6)/-5-6< E -)4<0 )6, #7+1)4 ):E -):616/ #=887:< E =;1+ -,1) )6, "-:.7:5)6+E "=*41+ #-:>1+-; E #87:< E $-)+0-: $:)1616/ Our degree programmes are awards of @PulseRMC

New Volvos hit the spot For those seeking a more sporting and expensive edge to their everyday family runabout, the R-Design models in Volvo’s line-up really hit the spot. And with the release of the all-new S90 saloon and V90 estate, Volvo has once again applied the Rdesign treatment. Sporting a new front-end design with spoilerintegrated fog lights, unique grill with piano black trim on both the front and rear of the car, new five-spoke matt black diamond-cut wheels and a more performance-orientated chassis, not only should the S90/V90 look the part but it should drive the part to. There are unique touches on the inside to which should improve the experience over standard models such as unique deco trim and sporty contour seats. Prices to be unveiled shortly.

FROM HIGH PERFORMANCE TO FAMILY PRACTICALITY, JORDAN CUTFORTH LOOKS AT THE CARS HITTING ROADS SOON.

King of the track? New Mondeo ST

Rugged good looks

Ever wanted a sporty Ford Mondeo? Well, if so, you’d have to rewind all the way back to 2002 with the ST220 which had a very exciting – and thirsty – V6 petrol bomb under the hood. Today, the ST name makes a comeback onto the brand’s family wagon range after a 14year absence. It’s called the STLine, but unlike the usual ST nut jobs that escape from the Ford skunkworks division, which come packing powerful petrol engines, this one comes with two 2.0-litre diesel options in 148 and 178hp flavours. Other additions to the STLine include sport suspension and body styling, unique alloy wheel designs and sport seats, perforated leather steering wheel and alloy pedals for the interior. Available in five-door or estate body styles.

Mercedes-Benz has finally announced pricing and specifications for their new GLC Coupe SUV. Starting at £40,580, the GLC Coupe from launch will be available with a 2.1-litre diesel with either 170 (GLC 220d) or 204hp (GLC 250d). Both produce 56.5mpg on the combined cycle and emit 131g/km of CO2. A nine-speed automatic comes as standard. Standard equipment includes Garmin Map Pilot navigation system, Active Park Assist, Artico upholstery in black or beige. keyless start, reversing camera, LED performance head lights, heated front seats, sports suspension, electrically operated tail gate and mirrors. There’s a host of optional equipment available for this car, including the AMG Line, the Premium and Premium Plus packages and the Driving Assist Package. First UK deliveries will arrive in September.

@PulseRMC

Revealed at this years’ Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Mercedes AMG GT R is the latest German skunkworks escapee to take a headlong on challenge in dethroning the Porsche 911 GT3 RS from the perch of ultimate track car weaponry. This AMG GT R is what the SLS Black Series was to the original SLS: it’s a meaner, more hardcore machine than the vehicle it’s based on. To achieve this madman lunacy, Mercedes has added a wider and more aggressive body kit, power increase to 577bhp and 516lb ft of torque, a quicker 0-62 sprint of 3.6 seconds, a higher 198mph top speed and a much louder exhaust. Prices yet to be confirmed but expect a hefty premium of over the AMG GT S’s £110,000 sticker price.

IS THE NEW MG GS SUITABLE FOR EVERYDAY DRIVING? WE SENT STEPHANIE BURNS TO FIND OUT.

Stephanie picks up the keys for the MG GS at Eric Stead

ric Stead – the MG specialist on The Common in Ecclesfield – may be one of the longest-running motor dealers in the area, having been established in 1962, but its vehicle portfolio is anything but old-fashioned. The MG GS has just landed and they’re so pleased with this all-new SUV, they invited me along to take the Exclusive model for a spin. On arrival at Eric Stead, I was greeted by Trevor Stead, the son of the dealer’s original owner, who now runs the business with his brother Ian. The MG was ready and raring to go on the forecourt and, as Trevor led me outside to become acquainted with my wheels for the day, the first thing that struck me was its sporty-but-accessible appearance. It was sleek and stylish enough for me to feel like I was in for a real treat, without worrying about driving about in a too-flashy motor all day. It is said to be inspired by the diversity of a modern family and I can really appreciate how they’ve fulfilled that brief. After driving up to Grenoside Woods for a quick photoshoot, I hopped in the back to see how the kids would find the whole experience and was bowled over by how spacious and comfortable it was. Miles of leg room and enveloping seats would make long car journeys a dream.

Back in the front, I turned left out of the Greno Woods car park and took the winding route up Woodhead Road towards Wortley, heading for the motorway where I could really put its speedy prowess to the test. It handled corners beautifully on the way and, when we hit the motorway, I relished the chance to put my foot down and enjoy the (very smooth) ride. Having passed with flying colours at higher speeds, it was time to see how it handled smaller spaces and narrow city streets. Heading into Sheffield city centre, I was surprised at how agile it was around tight bends and I never felt like it was too big to handle. Reversing is a breeze, too. With a camera guiding from behind, pointing me in exactly the right direction, I was perfectly confident squeezing it into a gap between two cars. When I reluctantly returned my new favourite car to Trevor later that day, I asked him what made it so special. “The price and the warranty make it extremely good value for money,” he enthused. “Prices for the standard model start at just £14,995 and the five-year warranty is a real added bonus. Honestly, we are chuffed to bits with it.” If you’d like to try the MG GS for yourself, call up quick. People are so eager to see what all the fuss is about that test drive @PulseRMC

appointments are booking up fast. Heading back out of the showroom to my own car, I caught sight of something rather special – a pristine 1979 MGB GT. “It has never been registered and only has 67 miles on the clock,” said Trevor. “Someone would have to offer me an awful lot of money to part with it.” For all the modern wonders that vehicles like the MG GS can provide, it’s clear that, at the heart of it all, it’s the earnest, life-long passion for cars that has fuelled customer trust and loyalty in Eric Stead for more than 50 years.
