HEALTH
New year, new you START 2017 ON THE FRONT FOOT BY MAKING SOME POSITIVE CHANGES TO YOUR LIFESTYLE. RACHEL MARTIN HAS SOME TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOALS. ith the new year comes a raft of resolutions and 2017 is set to bring with it some of the latest and most effective ways to lose weight. And while reaching a healthy weight can take commitment and willpower, there are some tried and tested approaches that should make the task easier. If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you’re not alone. Here are some weight loss tips and trends to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.
W
JOIN A GYM
For most people, the first step towards achieving their fitness goals is joining a gym. Every gym is different, and yours should be the perfect fit for you. It shouldn’t just be a room full of treadmills, but a place in which you actually enjoy spending time. Your gym should feel comfortable, inspiring and nurturing to your overall health.

they can help you stay on track. Calorie-counting and exercise-tracking fitness apps let you use a smartphone or tablet to record food and exercise, as well as set a net calorie consumption target or range for the day based on your height, weight, age, gender, and overall level of activity.
HEALTHY EATING
HOME WORKOUTS
Healthy eating is not about depriving yourself. It’s about feeling great, having more energy and stabilising your mood. To set yourself up for success, take a number of small, manageable steps – like adding a salad to your diet once a day – rather than one big drastic change.
A workout DVD or even a quick YouTube video can pay off when you have limited time. Committing to a 20-minute blast at home is easier than promising yourself that you will get up early for the gym.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Not only do studies claim people have more rigorous and longer workouts when they’re outside, but being around nature has positive psychological effects including increased selfesteem and lowered depression and fatigue.
Alternative therapies 3D LIPO
Unlike traditional liposuction, 3D Lipo is entirely non-invasive. It reduces fat and improves skin texture. BODY WRAPS
FITNESS CLASSES
FITNESS APPS
Any fitness class is a good choice if you have trouble finding motivation to exercise. If you’re trying to lose weight, however, choosing the right class will make a big difference. Some classes are good for muscle definition and relaxation but don’t offer too much in terms of calorie burning. Since you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound of fat, choosing classes that burn as many calories as possible is your best bet to shed the pounds.
Apps alone won’t help you lose weight, but
Body wraps are designed to tighten skin, eliminate toxins, help with temporary inch loss and/or soothe tired muscles. HYPNOSIS
Hypnosis is considered the best solution for people with binge eating patterns.
HYDRATION
Appetite and thirst are regulated through the same part of the brain, leading you to think you’re hungry when you’re dehydrated. Beat

It’s time to shape up s good as our intentions are to get fit for the New Year, it can be difficult to find the motivation to follow through with our resolutions. That’s why Snap Fitness, Stocksbridge’s newest and most exciting gym, is offering new members their first month absolutely free when they join this January. Snap Fitness has a fantastic range of equipment from leading fitness brands including Matrix and Octane. The gym will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will be operated through a key card system for extra security. “We can’t wait to welcome everyone to

A fitness plan for you
REGARDLESS OF AGE AND ABILITY, EVERYONE CAN SUCCEED WITH AFFORDABLE PERSONAL TRAINING COURTESY OF THE BODY PLANNERS. ost of us join gyms in January, but once February rolls around, we tend to lose our motivation. If only we could afford a personal trainer. With Body Planners, you can. Created by two personal trainers, Rachel Hurst and Jake Cook, their group sessions are strictly limited to 12 people, meaning you still get individual attention and advice. This means you can get a premium service at an affordable price. Body Planners is based at Fitness Garage, an award-winning gym in Ecclesfield with state-of-the-art facilities. Body Planners isn’t about fast results – it is designed for long-term change in diet and lifestyle, giving long-lasting results. Rachel knows this from personal experience. “My fitness journey started five years ago when I was a size 16 to 18,” she says. “I took the wrong path, opting for meal replacement drinks. I got fast results, which were not sustainable. To mend a broken metabolism, I had to gain weight. Since then, through nutrition and training, I have maintained my current weight for the last 18 months and I’m eating real food.” Soon after getting back on the right track, she was inspired to help others on their own fitness journeys by becoming a qualified personal trainer and LDNM nutrition consultant. Coming from a Royal Marines background, Jake was already in good shape, but once he’d retrained as a personal trainer in 2011, he was ready to help others achieve their fitness goals too. Their training is structured into four-week
M
blocks, each block structured to the progress of the group. Attending the gym three to four times a week, your sessions will be made up of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), core, strength and endurance exercises. There is also an online support group where recipe ideas are exchanged, fitness advice and support are given and lifestyle choices discussed. “Most people think that less food and more exercise is the key to losing weight, but actually, the more you eat, the more fuel you have to exercise,” says Jake. “It’s not just a quick fix solution. We provide a lifestyle blueprint for life.” Their handy nutrition and training guide will be your partner along the journey and includes tips and recipes, whilst the nutrition app is a great way to track your progress. Body Planners will personalise the settings so it works out the correct calories and macronutrient allowance for you. You will also be weighed and measured at regular intervals to measure how far you’ve come. But it’s not just about losing weight. Most of their clients are aiming to feel fitter, stronger and healthier and measure progress in lost inches. It doesn’t matter if you are 19 or 60-yearsold, Body Planners have a fitness plan for you – for life. Testimonials “I am now into my fourth month of this plan. I am fitter, slimmer and enjoying it. The trainers Rachel and Jake are knowledgeable about diet and exercise, they motivate you, and the training sessions are great fun. If you are looking for something a little bit different, try it.” – Louise Slater “I have been doing this programme for six weeks and I’m loving it. You get to eat so much and the exercise is so much fun, you don’t realise how hard you are working. The trainers are first class and still have goals of their own, so know what effort is required.” – Tina McCarthy “Just completed my first month. I’ve achieved a 5cm reduction around my waist and have three per cent less body fat. I have really enjoyed it. Rachel and Jake are tough trainers so they get the results and we have a laugh along the way. Go on – give it a go.” – Janet Holmes Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk 13

Centre of attention WITH AN AIM TO MAKE EVERY CLIENT PAINFREE, YOU’LL FEEL TRULY WELCOMED AND CARED FOR AT KINETIC.
hysiotherapy centres often conjure up a clinical environment, and just the mention of one can be offputting. But when you walk into Kinetic in Ecclesfield, you feel as if you’ve entered a peaceful spa. Greeted by a smile, a drink and a comfortable living room setting, you’ll feel truly welcomed and cared for at Kinetic. “Our aim is to make every client painfree,” says sports therapist, Gayle Cotton. “I always tell my staff, ‘the client is number one.’ Once that client is in the room, they are the most important person in the world.” Gayle opened Kinetic in June 2013. She has worked in sports therapy for over 20 years and has worked with many sports stars including a handful of high-profile boxers and local teams such as the Sheffield Steelers and the Rotherham United Football Club. She is joined at Kinetic by sports therapists Jess Beck and Tom Pinder. Jess is Gayle’s daughter, and having grown up seeing her mother in action at the Rotherham football

ground, she was inspired to become a qualified therapist herself. Jess tends to have a more ‘hands on’ approach and offers deep tissue massage therapy, whilst Tom specialises in rehabilitation and helps clients get back to full health. But traditional physical therapies are not the only things the centre offers. In fact, they pride themselves on offering a number of services under one roof, including chiropody and osteopathy. Their therapies include tai chi, yoga, pilates, acupuncture, reflexology, hypnotherapy and much more. Their pilates classes involve up to six @PulseRMC
clients, can be used to treat a number of medical conditions and can be tailored to your specific needs. When it comes to group classes, clients of similar ability are placed together. Mixed and men-only classes are also available. Instructor, Julie Duffin-Green, also offers reformer pilates, which uses a piece of sports equipment first designed by Mr Pilates himself in the early 1900s. Kinetic is the only centre on this side of town that offers the therapy, which is made up of circuit-based and one-on-one sessions. The centre is also one of three in Sheffield that offers RPW shockwave therapy.

Originally used in hospitals to treat kidney stones, it sends radial pressure waves through the body to reduce pain and increase circulation. Your physical therapist may suggest you use shockwave therapy if you suffer from plantar fasciitis, tennis/golfers elbow or Achilles tendinopathy. And if you have always been intrigued by acupuncture, it has been recognised as a brilliant treatment for pain and stress in recent years. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence has even recommended acupuncture for chronic lower back pain and chronic headaches. Kinetic is a British Acupuncture Council Member and the treatment can be used alongside modern medicines. It is even accepted by Westfield and other insurance schemes. Not only does Kinetic treat the pain associated with injuries, they can also help prevent them too. This could be through correcting your posture, or by continuing with certain exercises tailored to you.
Each sports therapist offers a high-quality service, but if they cannot achieve the right results or you have another issue that needs attending to, they are happy to refer you to another specialist in the building. For example, if you have successfully realigned your body, but your gait still needs correcting, you may be referred to their sports podiatrist. So whatever your condition and whichever therapy you are interested in, you will find them all under one roof, along with a dedicated team of specialists, at Kinetic. Visit the website to view their full list of services and their new studio timetable. Plus when you set up a standing order to pay monthly for classes, you will receive two free massages and a 15 per cent discount on your first osteopathy or sports therapy session.

LOOKING BACK
The hospital parade on The Common in Ecclesfield in 1909
“The floats were the highlight of the event and were pulled by farm horses provided free of charge by local farmers.”
Hospital parade WE SCRUTINISE A LONG-STANDING TRADITION IN THIS MONTH’S LOOKING BACK AS WELL AS GETTING SOME INTERESTING FEEDBACK FROM PREVIOUS PICTURES. ith a new year upon us, our thoughts are turning to our health, especially with many of us being struck down with illnesses such as colds and flu during the colder months. But in the days before the National Health Service, hospitals depended for much of their funding on bequests, endowments and public generosity. In Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and High Green, public fundraising events called hospital parades were held from the 1890s until 1936. This photo shows the hospital parade on The Common in Ecclesfield in 1909. The floats were the highlight of the event and were pulled by farm horses provided free of charge by local farmers. The small shop on the left, advertising Cadbury’s Cocoa, later became the village bakery. Do you recognise anyone in this photo or know of anyone involved in one of the hospital parades? Get in touch and let us know by calling Phoebe Seymour on 0114 250 6300 or by emailing phoebe.seymour@rmcmedia.co.uk.

We have also had a fantastic response from the photo of a group of Smithy Wood Colliery miners, which appeared in our November issue. The man second from the left was identified as David Thorpe by his nephew Glen. His daughter, Valerie Stack, then got in touch to correct the details published in our last issue (her father died in 1998, not 2005) and to tell us that she believes the man sat to the right of the lady to be her father’s friend, Doug Hays.

LAST MONTH…
In our December issue, we asked readers to get in touch if they could identify the mystery snowman builder pictured outside Ecclesfield Church in the unseasonably cold March of 1979. Margaret Fish got in touch to tell us it was her son, Jason, who was nine-years-old at the time. Margaret said: “I remember him telling me someone had taken a photo of him, but we didn’t know who. It was a nice surprise to open my magazine and see it!” Jason now has two sons of his own, Elliot, eight and Miles, ten. 24 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

Though they mostly work on home projects, they have worked on commercial buildings and even estates such as Chatsworth. They complete everything to a high standard and the end results speak volumes. IN BRIEF
Santa visits Sandersons and raises over £1,000 for charity
University campus hosts art and design event
Santa’s weekend visits to Sandersons Department store at Fox Valley in north Sheffield have raised more than £1,000 for charity. The team at Sandersons worked with The Rotary Club of Wortley to create a festive grotto over the weekends throughout late November and into December with all proceeds being donated to the charity. Dozens of young visitors have been to see Santa and his little helper in store over the last few weeks receiving a gift, as well as a traditional piece of fruit for a £5 donation to the Rotary Club’s charitable fund. A special North Pole post box was also installed in the run up to Christmas for children to send their Christmas wishes and requests. The Rotary Club of Wortley, who coordinated the store’s VIP visitor, have decided the £1,160 raised should be donated to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. Sandersons managing director Deborah Holmes said: “We’d like to thank the whole team at Wortley Rotary Club, and especially Santa, for helping us with our Christmas grotto. We had so many lovely comments from parents and we are absolutely thrilled with the amount of money
which has been raised for such a great charity.” Trevor Fletcher, president elect of the Rotary Club of Wortley, said: “We have been delighted to work with Sandersons in the run up to Christmas and raise such a fantastic amount for charity at this time of year. Thank you to all the families who have been to visit the grotto. Santa will definitely be back at Sandersons for Christmas 2017!” For more information about events and special offers at Sandersons, visit www.sandersonsdeptstore.co.uk and to find out more about the work of The Rotary Club of Wortley go to www.wortleyrotary.co.uk
New Sheffield Wednesday book is a page-turner It’s been an exciting first half of the football season, with Sheffield Wednesday pressing for promotion back into the Premiership for the first time since their relegation almost two decades ago. But if there is also a touch of pessimism among Owls fans as they watch the progress being made by Carlos Carvalhal’s men, you can’t blame them... the modern era has been tough for the team from Sheffield 6, with relegations, financial hardship and the horrors of the Hillsborough disaster to contend with. Not a happy story perhaps, but certainly a compelling one, and it is brought vividly to life in a new book by local author Tom Whitworth called Owls: Sheffield Wednesday Through The Modern Era (Pitch Publishing £12.99). There is much compelling subject matter, and the author has certainly done his homework, talking to many of the key players about the incidents that have shaped the club’s recent history. From the almost-glory days of the early 1990s and the team of Chris Waddle, John Sheridan and David Hirst to Paolo Di Canio’s pushing over of a referee, terrible transfer dealings, relegations and a life in the lower league wilderness, there is no shortage of incident. That, followed by League One play-off success, moves by the club to sue its own fans, winding up orders and High Court appearances, is followed by club-saving takeovers and a well-funded, entertaining and long-awaited revival, which makes this a real page-turner and also ensures the reader finishes on a high note. 30 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

University Campus Barnsley (UCB) art, design and fashion department provided tasters to over 100 attendees from colleges and schools across South Yorkshire. The event provided information on why studying higher education at smaller campuses is becoming a popular choice, with colleges and universities offering an increasing choice of programmes, great work placements, fantastic value for money and easy access and progression. The art and design tasters provided students with the opportunity to experience studio photography techniques including portrait lighting and motion capture photography. Attendees also used state-of-theart virtual reality equipment to experience drawing and painting in 3D environments using their photographs as inspiration. Evan Wood, HE curriculum coordinator of art, design and fashion, said: “The HEPP and Co event was a great introduction to HE study for young people thinking about their future. It was a relaxed atmosphere where students could ask questions and engage in our practical virtual reality and photography workshops.” James Wilmshurst, a former University Campus Barnsley student, added: “It was a fantastic event and a good opportunity for pupils to understand that there are plenty of good local options when considering higher education, especially for those who may have been undecided about progressing onto university.”

James before
Achieve your goals LET G&M HEALTH CARE WITH ALEVERE TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE AND YOUR BODY.
“ I
dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be. “I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.” Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach.
“I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. My clothes started to feel too big and people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that. “Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you
on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.” G&M Healthcare is a GP-led clinic in Broomhill, Sheffield. The experts at G&M Healthcare are dedicated to helping people look their best and, with a series of complementary cosmetic treatments on offer, alongside Alevere, clients are truly spoilt for choice. A Simple Guide to People Building: A satire KIP MCGRATH’S DAVID KAYE HAS BEEN WONDERING IF THE DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION THINKS CHILDREN’S LEARNING CAN BE PUT TOGETHER LIKE A HOUSE. have looked at the building manuals from the Department for Education (DfE), carefully put together under the previous Chief Surveyor, Mr Gove. Here goes:
I
1. Lay a course of finest brick (we recommend those produced by the Outstanding Learning Objective Brick Company) on a bed of mortar (Inspirational Teacher Mortar Company of course). 2. Speed is of the essence here. The DfE have calculated that to build world-class houses we must lay bricks flat-out over 11 years. 3. If some of the bricks are not well laid, crack on! You’ll never finish the house in time if you don’t. 4. Do not concern yourself if due to the speed of laying, bricks drop out of the walls and large holes appear. Applications from the Ministry of Magic (MoM) are available if gravity becomes an issue. 5. Does your house appear to be tottering?
44 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
Tough! World-class house-building requires a relentless approach. 6. Has your house fallen down? Continue where you laid your previous brick. Bricks won’t float in mid-air? Fill in the MoM application form and don’t bother us. If this happens, we will be looking at some magnificent world-class ‘houses’ surrounded by many tottering heaps that need intervention to help them stand. Isn’t there another way? According to the Ministry of Common Sense (MoCS), we could use tried and trusted house-building techniques where each brick is laid carefully. Yes, it does take longer but once these houses are finished they can stand up on their own, are useful and don’t require lots of maintenance to keep the basic structure standing. In fact, we can even add value with an extension.

guaranteed a warm welcome and a great game at Tankersley Park Golf Club. With a beautifully manicured golf course, casual visitors, small parties, societies and experienced golfers will have a fantastic time and be treated like members for the day. The golf club covers a tract of land with a fascinating and varied history. In the past few centuries it has been an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area, and even a battle-tank testing ground. Tankersley Park Golf Course was opened in 1907 and was extended to 18 holes in 1924. It was then developed under the expert supervision of golf professional, course designer, green keeper and golfing guru, Arthur Storey. On a few acres of redundant mining spoil and moorland he laid the foundations of a wonderful test of accurate iron play and the rest as they say, is history. With a gorgeous golf course and some fabulous food on offer, Tankersley Park Golf Club is a brilliant destination for both golfers and non-golfers alike this new year.
