EDUCATION

Facing the future

UNSURE OF WHAT LIES AHEAD? WE LOOK AT THE EDUCATION OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS APPROACHING THEIR GCSE EXAMS AND BEYOND. t every stage of your child’s education, they come to a crossroads. Perhaps your child is about to decide which subjects to continue to study or is awaiting exam results, which will determine what they do next. However old they are, having as much information and sound advice as possible is vital when coming to a decision. If your child is in need of some guidance and you are unsure of how to help, here are some things for them to consider at each stage.

A

AGES 14-16

The main difference between GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council) is that BTECs are usually awarded for more vocational subjects such as P.E. (physical education), hair and beauty and children’s care. BTECs are usually taken by students aged 16 and above, but some schools offer BTECs alongside GCSEs. If your child is weighing up whether to choose a BTEC, it may be worth noting that they involve more coursework and less exams than GCSEs. So if your child

12 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

hates exams, they may find a BTEC easier. One BTEC is equivalent to one GCSE, so don’t worry which will be considered more ‘valuable’ when it comes to the next stage of their education.

staying on to investigate those subjects for their A Levels. And if they don’t like the idea of going to the sixth form connected to their secondary school, now is a good time to start afresh.

AGES 16-18

AGES 18+

As mentioned above, your child can opt for BTECs at this stage in their education, or they can take academic-based A Levels or a work-based qualification such as an RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework, formerly NVQs). A Levels can be taken at sixth form or college, whilst BTECs and RQFs are more commonly taught at college, so it is completely up to them which learning environment they prefer. Whilst your child may like the idea of going to the sixth form connected to their school, they should choose a route that will best benefit their career. If they know what career they want to pursue at this stage, a BTEC or RQF is a good option. However, if they are unsure about their career goals, but know they enjoy certain academic subjects, it’s worth them

At this stage, your child will probably be more certain about what direction they are going in. Some may know they want to go to university, but just need a year out to travel or get some work experience under their belt. However, others may feel university isn’t for them and there are a few options for them to consider when it comes to the world of work. From apprenticeships and careers to gap year opportunities, www.notgoingtouni.co.uk is a handy website to explore. If they need extra advice, www.prospects.ac.uk offers application and interview tips and tells you more about different industries. Perhaps there are areas of work they haven’t considered yet. Unpaid work placements can also provide a foot in the door, whilst internships are usually fixed term paid positions that can lead to permanent, long term work.

EDUCATION

Fear of the unknown LIZ THEAKER IS A YEAR 10 STUDENT AT ECCLESFIELD SECONDARY SCHOOL. ABOUT TO GO INTO HER FINAL YEAR, SHE EXPLAINS WHY SHE IS FEELING APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THE CHANGES TO THE WAY GCSES ARE ASSESSED AND GRADED… very school year is greeted with nerves and excitement about what lies ahead. However, going into Year 11, I am greeted with something new, something that I wouldn’t expect at the start of a school year. Fear. This seems like the only word to describe my feelings about the year ahead. Year 11 brings a huge expectation from all directions; my school year will be the first set of students to take the brand new GCSEs and that is frightening. When we do mock exams at school, we are uncertain whether our exams will actually be like this or something totally different. We are also unsure about what is expected of us as we have no grade boundaries yet so we cannot be officially told if we will be getting a 9 or 3 and this uncertainty means that we are left stranded as to how much harder we need to try. This uncertainty adds a whole new level of pressure to the mix. Once the Year 11s have left school it’s the Year 10s who remain to deal with the pressure; you’ll have teachers at you, saying things like “one year left till your exams now” and “you better get your heads down and revise”. But is this the kind of thing we want to be hearing?

E

Do we want to be given that extra pressure and fear of the year to come? In the last few weeks of school before the summer break, we are having more exams to find out whether we need extra support or tutoring. This almost constant scrutiny adds to the build-up of pressure we are placed under, as I don’t feel we are getting a breather from tests, and many pupils up and down the country would agree. I feel like a lot of the nerves and fear come from the idea that my school life is coming to an end, to be followed by a new and hopefully less stressful part of my life. I hope that future Y11s won’t have the same amount of nerves and fear as me and my fellow pupils when it comes to our GCSE exams, as slowly and gradually the courses and exams should become clearer and clearer for school pupils in the future. However, future Year 11s be warned… if the GCSEs can change now, then it can happen again at any time, so try not to get too comfortable with these new exams. All I would say is when it comes to your GCSEs, prepare for anything and brace yourself for a bumpy ride in the future, because they aren’t easy. But if you do get your head down and work hard then you will pull through with some great results. @PulseRMC

Help your child keep up KIP MCGRATH CENTRE DIRECTOR, DAVID KAYE EXPLAINS WHY IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER FOR PUPILS TO GET EXTRA TUITION. “

here’s always something new,” I hear you say (and teachers and pupils cry). Primary schools have digested the changes to the SATs and our youngest children have sat their tests at the age of seven. SATs reflect the schools to a certain extent. Ofsted look very hard at school performance data and the value added is measured using test scores. If your child is falling behind, you need to act. The pace of learning at all levels of education is rapid. A child who is behind now, will struggle even more as they get older. Extra lessons may be the last thing your child wants, but leaving it will only make things more difficult. At Kip McGrath, a free assessment is used to find out what is needed and makes starting tuition much easier. We then build up the learning so there are no gaps. Over the summer, the loss in attainment can put children at a disadvantage, especially those starting secondary school, where teachers will make early judgements which will reflect in the set they end up in.

T

“Extra lessons may be the last thing your child wants, but leaving it will only make things more difficult. At Kip McGrath, a free assessment is used to find out what is needed. We then build up the learning so there are no gaps.” For other years, I have often encountered children who struggle in September. The children’s attainment may have gone down, but the teacher’s expectations have not. In August we will have the results from new English and maths GCSEs. Other subjects will be given the new 1 to 9 grades next year, including the sciences. There is much more content to be learned with greater focus on practical work and the application of maths. At Kip McGrath, we support students with their confidence and provide opportunity for further study in experimental technique, analysis of results and use of maths. Finally, we wait for the effect of Ofsted chief inspector, Andrea Spielman’s recent comments. There is a conflict between her words and government policy. Schools which are exam factories will not be looked on favourably. Ofsted will be looking for a well-rounded education. But of course, schools will still be expected to produce the results. David Kaye is the centre director for Kip McGrath Education Centres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield and is a former head teacher with 27 years’ experience in South and West Yorkshire. @PulseRMC

CHARITY

Frances Hoyland and Robert Milne

Frances with her supportive friends

Dive right in FRANCES HOYLAND IS TAKING THE PLUNGE TO RAISE MONEY FOR A CAUSE VERY CLOSE TO HER OWN HEART. sk the average person to explain what ME (myalgic encephalomyeliti) is and most of them will probably say, “It makes you feel tired.” But as ME patient Frances Hoyland explains, there’s more to it than that. “People don’t realise what it’s like,” she says. “You have a lot of muscle and joint pain, you have cognitive problems, emotional issues and it’s the tiniest things that expend energy that have a really big impact on you. “So when I’m having one of my bad days, I’ll do something as small as walking up the stairs and I’ll need to sit down for ten minutes after because my heart’s racing and I’m really tired. “And I’m quite a mild case. Some sufferers are so sick, that noise and light are unbearable, and they live their lives in a darkened room, unable to communicate or even feed themselves.” Fran first started experiencing symptoms when she went on a college trip to London when she was 16. After a nap, she woke to find that she was paralysed from the waist down. After an overnight stay in hospital, the feeling in her legs returned and she was discharged. However, she started to get excruciating headaches and had hardly any energy. After ten months of visits to her GP, Fran was finally diagnosed with ME. Two years on, the 19-year-old is keen to raise awareness of the

A

16 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

condition and to give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. After learning that an estimated 250,000 people in the UK are affected by ME and that there is no known cure, Fran decided she needed to do something drastic. So on 22 July, she will be doing a sky dive for ME Research UK, along with her friends Robert Milne, David Hirst, Jessica Baker, Rebecca Bream and her Spanish teacher and headteacher at Chapeltown Academy, Ali Jaffer. “It needs more awareness than it has, so you have to go big with it – and a sky dive is always something I’ve wanted to do but never thought I’d have the courage to do. “Ali’s been by my side through all this because he stayed with me in London and took me to the hospital. I thought it’d be nice if he could help […] so we just lightly persuaded him and the rest of my friends just really wanted to support me.”

Fran and her friends started fundraising in January, and thanks to various bake sales, fancy dress days and three sponsored head shaves at Chapeltown Academy, they have managed to raise over £2,000. “The target was originally £1,500, but we are just trying to push it as much as we can now because this research doesn’t get much government funding compared to other illnesses. “So it’s really important that someone with ME, who is higher functioning like me, can get out and do what I can to spread the word. “There’s been a lot of positive reactions and support, especially from college and my friends and family. They’ve really got in the spirit of it and I really appreciate it.” To help Fran raise money for ME Research UK, visit www.JustGiving.com/Fran-Hoyland.

Slim yourself

HAPPY!

STEVE AND HELENA LELEW WERE AMAZED AT THE RESULTS AFTER THEY DECIDED TO LOSE WEIGHT WITH THE HELP OF ALEVERE THERAPY AT G&M HEALTHCARE. f you are looking to transform your life and lose weight rapidly, choose the Alevere Therapy. Trying to lose weight can be a slog, especially in the early days when carrying those extra pounds can make exercise all the more challenging. That’s why Steve and Helena Lelew decided to get a head start, with the Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare. Dr Grace and her team are on hand throughout the process, providing a friendly, supportive and professional service. “We’d lost weight in such a short space of time, and once we’d got down to our baseline weights it was easier to keep it up,” says Steve. “We now have much more energy and more motivation to exercise.” Steve had tried diets and slimming groups in the past, and even a similar weight loss treatment five years ago, but the weight had slowly crept back on. “I’m approaching 60 now and one thing

that really motivated me was a few years ago when I went to an event with my twin brother. He weighed a stone more than me and someone said, ‘Is that your older brother?’ It was then I realised that being heavier can make you look much older.” This time, Steve was more determined and committed than ever before. And doing the treatment and diet plan together with his wife, meant they were able to support each other to stay on track. “I didn’t like the idea of a gastric band, but I wanted something with quick results, that would keep the weight off long term.” “They do three things. First of all you have an ultrasound where they find and deal with those bits you can’t lose through exercise. Second, they use an LPG machine to give you a skin tightening treatment. They then give you vitamin supplements and instructions of what you can eat. “Our therapists Sarah and Leyanne have been really nice and helpful. They’ve been on

And it’s not just their appearances and attitude to fitness that have changed. It’s improved their general health too. “We feel more positive. Our cholesterols and blood pressures are both down, which is amazing!” Despite being more motivated than ever to keep the pounds off, Steve says he still gets to give into temptation from time to time. “When I’ve been low and started creeping down to the fridge, Helena will stop me. Although you can get away with the odd treat and bounce back.” Looking back over his whole weight loss journey, would Steve recommend Alevere to other people? “As long as you stay committed and fully embrace all of their advice, it’s well worthwhile. It’s nice to know that G&M do other treatments too, but neither of us want to go back to our old lifestyles now!”

the plan themselves and it was reassuring to have regular check-ups once a week. “We also saw Dr Grace at regular intervals, who was very thorough and informative about the programme. We had lots of tests and she explained why each stage of the diet was important.” The whole process took 12 weeks, in which time, Steve had lost 3st 2lb and Helena had lost 2st. This meant Steve had gone down to 13st 2lb, whilst Helena was delighted to ditch her size 14 wardrobe in exchange for a slim size 8. Now at what Steve calls their ‘baseline weights’, managing their diet has become much easier. “I didn’t used to like vegetables, but after being weaned off the supplements, I actually craved them! Now we go to the supermarket and we know what a healthy trolley looks like, so it’s been a massive education too. “I used to see slim people and think ‘I want to look like that’ and now I do. Helena says she feels like a new person. I actually came home the other day and was surprised to find her boxing. We’ve been getting so many compliments – I feel younger!”

PROMOTION

Putting customers first THERE’S A NEW NAME AND A NEW LOOK AT HAIR STATION 45, BUT SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE – THEIR DEDICATION TO SERVICE, QUALITY AND VALUE FOR MONEY IS AS STRONG AS EVER. t may look like the new business on the block, but Hair Station 45 in Chapeltown has been a hairdressers in some form for over 50 years. Formerly Snoopy’s Hair Design, the salon has always had a strong reputation and a loyal following, but owner Rachel Lee felt the time had come to give the salon a new look. “We are proud to cater for all ages, but we realised that new clients were put off by the salon’s old fashioned look,” explains Rachel. “So we decided to move with the times, by modernising the décor. And with us being based at 45 Station Road, Hair Station 45 seemed like the perfect name.” Funnily enough, Rachel started her hairdressing career at this very salon before it was Snoopy’s. She did her work experience here during her school days. And she isn’t the only one. Many hairdressers based in the salons around Chapeltown trained here too. Then 12 years ago in 2005, with years of training and experience under her belt, Rachel took over as the owner of Snoopy’s Hair Design. Now back with a new name and complete refurbishment, Rachel and her team offer all aspects of hair dressing including hair extensions, wedding and prom hair. And men are welcome too. Not only is the whole team friendly and fully qualified, they only use the best products including Bed Head and Wella, as well as Leyton House colours, shampoo and conditioner, which includes an anti-fade

I

formula and conditioning treatment, that is not tested on animals. Two of the reasons the salon has gained such a good reputation over the years is that it is amazing value for money and always puts the interests of their clients first. “There are clients that ask us to do things that will damage their hair, which we refuse

to do,” says Rachel. “We always put hair care before money. It is about doing what’s best for the client’s hair.” Hairdressing services are not the only thing the salon provides. There is also a new business upstairs called NLG Beauty. Beautician, Naomi Goodhall, offers semipermanent lashes, tanning and will soon be providing waxing services – just in time for the summer holidays. Emma Gelsthorpe is the salon’s Temple Spa representative. Temple Spa is a complete face and body skin system exclusive to Harrods, London, and selected representatives around @PulseRMC

the UK. Contact Emma for more details. Rachel’s dedicated team is just as loyal as the clients, and this month, they will be saying farewell to Jean Smyth, who will be retiring after working at the salon for 23 years. Jean’s last day is Friday 21 July and customers are welcome to pop in to wish her well and toast the next stage of her life. “Jean has been a big part of this salon and we all wish her a happy retirement,” continues Rachel. “I’m really proud of our team and how far the business has come. I’d also like to thank my husband, Shayne, for all his support – especially during the refurbishment.” Speaking of moving with the times, Hair Station 45 now offers free WiFi, so you can show your friends and family your new hairdo or work from the comfort of your salon chair. For Hair Station 45’s latest offers follow them on Facebook or call 0114 2468864 to book an appointment today.

IN BRIEF

Barnsley Boundary raise money for Civic building

Fox Valley managing director, Mark Dransfield with Deepcar St John’s Primary School and Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir

FOX VALLEY CELEBRATES 1ST BIRTHDAY Fox Valley shopping centre has recently hosted a special family weekend in honour of the centre’s first birthday. Officially opened by OBE Joanna Lumley on 16 June 2016, a year on, Fox Valley has hosted multiple events including the dramatic final of the Tour de Yorkshire 2017. And just last month, Dransfield Properties, the company behind the Fox Valley development, was announced as the winner of the RICS Pro-Yorkshire Award for Regeneration for the centre. The birthday celebrations included performances from two local choirs and the launch of the centre’s first food festival. There was also a range of entertainment including local bands and musicians, stilt walkers, face painters, cooking demos and classical cars. Centre manager, Annabel Plumtree, said: “We had fantastic weather for the weekend and it has been great to see so many people come down and celebrate the centre’s first birthday with us.” To find more about Fox Valley visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk.

Pink Boutique owner opens new store

Chief executive of The Civic in Barnsley, Helen Ball, will be joined by friends, family and supporters to walk 72 miles in three days to raise money for The Civic Capital Appeal. The Civic is an independent arts charity and relies on ticket sales, grants and donations. This year it launched an ambitious £5million fundraising appeal to open a new theatre, gallery and café spaces, restoring its old front entrance on Eldon Street and connecting The Civic to the new town market square. The work is set to be complete by 2023. Helen said: “I’m walking to raise money for The Civic Appeal and to raise awareness with the general public and the business community to ask them to back our appeal to help restore our iconic building. Every penny counts.” Ryan Eastwood, managing director of Copier Systems, is joining Helen and The Civic team on the walk. Ryan added: “Copier Systems are proud to be business champions of The Civic and I would like to encourage other businesses in Barnsley to back The Civics’ ‘Connect’ fundraising campaign. “Having a vibrant arts centre at the heart of the town can only help to boost jobs, the visitor economy and help inspire our children and future generations of art lovers, by establishing a first class cultural scene.” The circular walk around the town will include a series of picturesque reservoirs, the beautiful Peak District, the splendid Bretton and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the conservation village of Elsecar, Cannon Hall Country Park and will end at The Civic in the heart of the town. The Civic, has been part of the town since 1877 and renovations are key if residents are to keep this magnificent building a part of Barnsley.

Many will be familiar with Pink Boutique of Birdwell, and now owner Sandie Wenham is proud to announce that she has opened a new store called Sandie in Mexborough. Whilst Pink Boutique focus on formal wear such as mother of the bride wear, Sandie offers everything from an outfit for the races, to casual wear perfect for your summer holiday. What’s more, there are many reductions on clothing throughout the store. Sandie said: “The new store goes by the same motto ‘fashion for women who love to be noticed’, but the outfits we stock here are less formal and can be worn for any occasion.” Find Sandie at the Montagu Shopping Centre on High Street/Bank Street, next to Pettits shoe shop. To find out more, call Sandie on 07877 889401 or search for Sandie Wenham on Facebook.

Sheffield pub scoops national award Sheffield pub, The Old Queens Head, has scooped itself a national award this week for the Best Trainer at Thwaites Awards for Excellence. The judges were really impressed with how the local pub had connected with the community. Judge Rachel Shepherd said: “The Old Queen’s Head really worked hard to develop local people – they have got great relationships with the local college and university taking on apprentices and training them into roles.” 30 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

LOOKING BACK

End of an era WE LOOK BACK AT A SCHOOL OF YESTERYEAR. ith this month’s magazine being an education special, we take a look at a former school in Burncross. This photo of Burncross School appears in the book, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown & High Green Through Time by Mel and Joan Jones. They say: “Burncross School was opened in 1884 and closed in the 1990s. The bell tower shown in the photograph was removed in 1965. Today the site is occupied by a small modern housing estate. “Now all that survives from the early photograph is something that was there long before the school was built: a milepost from the old Chapeltown to Wortley section of the Rotherham, Wortley and Four Lane Ends turnpike road (1740-1883). “This tells us that in one direction Chapeltown is one mile away and Rotherham

W

six miles away and in the other direction, Penistone is eight and a half miles away.” If you look closely at the up to date photo, you can see this signpost on the right of the entrance to the estate. If you have any information or memories of attending Burncross School, get in touch via the details below.

If you have any old pictures that you would like to share, please send them, along with your name and a short description of the photograph, to Phoebe Seymour, Pulse Looking Back, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield S8 0XF or you can email them to phoebe.seymour@rmcmedia.co.uk. Last month… In the June issue of Pulse, we featured two long-standing pubs – The Black Bull in Ecclesfield and The Barrel in Chapeltown. Pulse reader Clarence Smith got in touch to tell us he remembered The Barrel and The Roundhouse pub from his youth. “My mum and dad started their married life in The Roundhouse till the family got too big,” says Clarence. “So we did an exchange with one of my uncles. We moved into the middle of the row. There was one more pub on the other side of the road – The Bridge Inn […] Up the road towards High Green was The Orphanage. I think the building is still standing.”
