PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE:
W
e’re all about healthy eating at Pulse this month. Man-ofthe-moment Joe Wicks has made waves with his ‘Lean in 15’ meal plans and workouts, which have helped tens of thousands of people get stronger and healthier. We look at the selfstyled body coach’s approach and why it’s become so popular (page 24). Helping us well on our way to achieving Joe’s goals is The Schoolrooms in Bradfield. Their new summer menu is packed with tantalising healthy treats, as well as the more indulgent favourites. Turn to page 22 for our review. Meanwhile, Sheffield is honoured to welcome the British Gold Panning Association to search the River Don for gold, and other treasures, this summer. As the association’s temporary site office, the Old Red Lion in Grenoside will be at the heart of the action and host weekly meetings for members and the public. We’ve heard from Grenoside’s very own gold panner Peter Sampson that gold fever is contagious and, even if no gold is found, we can’t wait to see what other remnants of our city’s industrial past are discovered. Read our interview with Peter on page 34. We’re also excited for the launch of Fox Valley – Stocksbridge’s fabulous new retail centre – this month (page 27). We’ll be there to watch Joanna Lumley officially declare the site open on 16 June and will be sharing all the details, and plenty of photographs from the launch, in our next issue. If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email Stephanie.Burns@rmcmedia.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email Helen.Wragg@ rmcmedia.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter (@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest of Regional Magazine Company’s titles) online at www. rmcmedia.co.uk. See you again next month. Stephanie Burns Editor

PULSEIN BRIEF
George Williams (centre right) and Sam Winnall (centre left) with students and staff from Barnsley Sixth Form College.
Reds stars go back to college Barnsley FC stars George Williams and Sam Winnall visited Barnsley Sixth Form College to inform students about the National Citizen Service (NCS), which is run by Barnsley FC’s Reds in the Community programme. NCS gives young people skills valued by employers and an opportunity to learn to budget for themselves and live
independently. UCAS recommends students include NCS in their personal statement when applying for university. A number of Barnsley Sixth Form College students have already committed to participating in NCS over the summer. Sam said: “I would recommend NCS as students benefit from taking part in the scheme and gain valuable life skills such as how to write a CV or covering letter. Education is important as not everyone can be a sports person or have a similar career.”
Northern Birman cat show comes to Chapeltown Northern Birman Cat Club, which is chaired by Dennis Hayward of Morningside Cattery on Chapeltown Road in Ecclesfield, held its annual championship show at Newton Hall in Chapeltown last month. There was a great turnout, with 200 visitors and 74 cats in attendance. More than £700 was raised for two cat rescue centres and to fund next year’s show. The club has also recently been awarded most popular cat club in the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF).
New home for Martyn Kemp Opticians Martyn Kemp Opticians (MKO), has relocated its Stocksbridge practice to the new Fox Valley development, transferring the familiar staff and creating two new jobs for local people. The new practice - open seven days a week - is almost four times larger than the original practice, which the company has occupied for more than 20 years. Headed by optometrist Andy Winnard, who has been part of the MKO team for ten years, the new practice offers a wider choice of frames and more services and boasts extra hi-tech optical equipment.

PROMOTIONHAIR WORKZ
With new services and a new look for the salon, the future looks bright for Hair Workz.
T
hese are exciting times for Hair Workz in Chapeltown. Not only are two new members of staff joining the team, but the salon is also set to unveil a brand new revamp any day. The ever-expanding business caters for a great variety of hair and beauty needs. And owner Kim Reynolds is now delighted to welcome Emma Richford and Laura Rae to the team. With Bespoke Eyebrows by Laura Rae, clients can enjoy the benefits of semi-permanent make-up, including eye liner, lip liner and eyebrows. To celebrate the launch, Laura is offering limited discounted rates. Emma Richford of ELR Aesthetics has also teamed up with Hair Workz to offer anti-wrinkle treatments, dermal fillers and lip enhancements. “I'm really excited to have joined the team,” said Emma. “I'm a registered nurse with 12 years postqualification experience and a qualified aesthetic nurse prescriber, offering a variety of affordable non-surgical cosmetic treatments for smoother, younger looking skin. I offer free, no obligation consultations, full post-treatment reviews and ten per cent discount for new clients.” These new services coincide with a whole new look for the salon, which is due for completion mid-June. “We’re making everything a bit more spa-like,” said Kim. “The backwash area has mood-lighting and soothing music so you can fully relax and really enjoy being pampered.”
The salon’s new products have also been capturing the imagination of new and existing clients alike. The revolutionary Olaplex system helps to permanently rebuild damaged hair and restore strength and elasticity to coloured and chemically treated tresses. This wonder ingredient provides the base for the new three-step treatment now available at Hair Workz, which is fast becoming a must-have for the region’s colour fans. And there’s more. Nouvelle new generation touch delivers ammonia-free, tone-on-tone colour to enhance natural hair colour and revive highlights. This new colour range is far kinder to hair and results in a beautiful full-bodied look without root regrowth. Even more new products are due for release in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for announcements in the next issue. In the meantime, Kim is looking to develop the team further with a new beauty therapist. If you are qualified in all aspects of beauty and think you’re the right person for this growing business, get in touch. Call Hair Workz on 0114 245 5941 to book your appointment. MAY MEMORIES Can you identify the faces in this line-up from 1945?
K
athleen Porter (nee Higgins) from Chapeltown kindly sent us this photograph of May Queen ‘sweet pea’. It was taken in 1945 at the Trinity Methodist Chapel, which is now the EPPiC Theatre on Well Lane in Ecclesfield. Kathleen said: “I am sat in the centre of the photo with my sister Pam, Doris Wass, Sandra Wass and Joyce Whitham. The other two girls I recognise but can’t recall their names. My elder sister Joan is at the front of the photo, first of the four people on the right.” Kathleen also shared memories of growing up in the area. “I remember skipping on the street under the light in Butchill Avenue in front of Megan Hartley’s house. And another game – guessing a film star’s name just from the initials and, if correct, dashing across the road. No expensive toys needed. We would stop out as long as we could until dad called us, at least twice, with the words ‘Kathleen, come on ‘ere’.” If you have any memories of the May Queen, or can name anyone else in the picture, please get in touch. Call Stephanie Burns on 0114 250 6300 or email Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will print your comments in the next issue. We would also like to receive your old pictures for Looking Back. If you have any that you would like to share, please send them, along with your name and a short description of the photograph, to Pulse Looking Back, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield S8 0XF, or email them to Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk. If you would like us to return your photographs, please include your address with the images and we will be happy to post them back.

PULSEEATING OUT
With food as tasty, tempting and healthy as this, it’s no surprise that The Schoolrooms is a popular dining destination. Words and photography: Stephanie Burns
SALAD DAYS W
hen you hear the words ‘this is by far one of the best salads I have ever had’ being spoken by your most health-conscious friend, you know the establishment you’re dining in must be good. The salad in question was from The Schoolrooms’ healthy new menu and comprised a mouth-watering concoction of pickled beetroot, rocket, goats cheese, Granny Smith, walnut, crisp Parma ham and fresh fig. The vibrant dish looked as pretty as a picture and, if Fiona’s bold statement was anything to go by, tasted even better. I, too, had selected from the menu’s new lighter offerings. The Nicoise salad was a step above any version I’d come across before, with seared fresh tuna steak coated in sesame seeds joined by soft-boiled egg, al dente green beans, new potatoes, juicy cherry tomatoes, olives and baby gem lettuce. You couldn’t wish for a fresher, more inviting dish. We’d been surprised upon our arrival just before 12.30pm that we had our pick of the seats in the nearempty café. By 12.35pm, however, almost every table was occupied

with the bustling lunchtime crowd. Looking round, others were following our healthy lead – the Mediterranean superfood salad (couscous, pomegranate and pumpkin seeds, feta, peppers, coriander, mint, broccoli and citrus dressing, £7) drawing our attention away from our own table for just a second. Of course, for those who prefer a heartier meal, the café’s wellloved favourites still remain. I have a feeling there’d be an uproar if the butchery burger Pickled beet salad, £7 (£8), the Bradfield Brewery beer- Nicoise salad, £8 battered haddock (£9) or the beautiful fat chips that Gluten-free tea loaf, £2.50 accompany them were ever Lemon drizzle cake, £2.25 side-lined. For dessert, though very Still mineral water, £2 tempted by the thought of the Americano, £2 Peak District mess (Peak District Earl Grey, £2.50 raspberry ripple ice cream with The Schoolrooms crushed meringue and berries, Mill Lee Road, Low Bradfield, £4), we couldn’t resist the cake Sheffield S6 6LB counter, which, as always, was Tel: 0114 285 1920 www.theschoolrooms.co.uk loaded with all sorts of tasty treats. Fiona made a beeline for the lemon drizzle cake and delighted in its moist sponge, lemon curd filling and zesty icing. I chose a gluten-free version of a childhood favourite – delicious tea loaf bursting with juicy fruit. No visit to The Schoolrooms is complete without a poke around the deli downstairs. After lunch, we took great pleasure in exploring the shelves, counters and fridges that groan with predominantly local fare. The homeware ranges also caught our eye – the wooden accessories crafted by hand, cute baskets and handmade cosmetics are a lovely addition to this slice of foodie heaven. Whether you fancy a light and healthy lunch or a luxurious blow-out, The Schoolrooms can teach you a lesson or two in how to indulge any appetite.

PULSEHEALTH
STEPS TO SUCCESS Joe Wicks has become an internet sensation but can he really make you ‘lean in 15’? Fiona Barber looks at The Body Coach’s online fitness and nutrition plan.
U
nless you’ve been avoiding all social media for the last year or so, you will have heard of Joe Wicks – AKA The Body Coach. This fitness guru became an Instagram sensation – he has 1.1million followers to date – by posting 15-second long videos cooking up healthy dishes that can be ready in 15 minutes under #leanin15. And, unlike many other diet plans, Joe’s 90-Day Shape, Shift and Sustain (SSS) diet and exercise plan is proving it is here to stay.
What is it? This online fitness and nutrition plan is designed for men and women of all fitness levels who want to get fit, burn fat and build muscle. This tailored plan has already helped transform the lives of over 100,000 people around the world since it launched in 2014. The plan costs £147, and those who sign up are sent a detailed questionnaire and asked to complete a food diary to get a
clear picture of overall health, nutritional history and lifestyle. Joe’s team use this to create a tailored calorie and macronutrient meal plan. The Body Coach also now has two cookery books out, so those who might not want to commit to the cost of the whole plan can get a taster of what dishes to cook and an education on what to eat when.
What do you get for your money? Recipes for over 100 tasty, easy-to-prepare meals including dishes you might not expect to find on a diet plan such as banana protein pancakes, build-up bagels, curries, burgers, and wraps. A new exercise plan is also sent each month, which can be done at the gym or at home, with minimal equipment. Training includes a combination of short HIIT (high intensity interval training) cardio workouts. A major selling point for many on the plan is that there is no need to spend hours and hours exercising, just 2030 minutes of really pushing yourself is enough to get results. Joe also has his own YouTube channel (TheBodyCoachTV), which features plenty of exercise videos, which is great if you’re stuck for workout ideas.
How does it work? The whole idea of the 90 Day SSS plan is to fuel your body in the correct way and eat in line with your energy demands, which means eating differently on training days and rest days. Carbohydrates are used to refuel after exercise and fats are used as steady fuel for the remainder of the day, night, and on rest days. A training day consists of two reduced carbohydrate meals and one post-workout carb-refuel meal and two snacks, whereas a rest day
24 PULSE MAGAZINE
@PulseRMC
includes three reduced-carb meals and two snacks.
Steps to success Some of Joe’s top tips to succeed on this plan are: Plan – life will undoubtedly get in the way and you may not be able to follow the plan 100 per cent, but by planning meals and workouts for the week ahead you can minimise poor decisions – like ordering a 12-inch pizza because there’s nothing in the fridge (we’ve all been there). Writing down a meal plan will help you when you are out food shopping too and, most importantly, keep it realistic – if you can only manage to fit in three workouts then only include three in your plan. Prep – spend a couple of hours in the kitchen each weekend prepping meals for the week ahead. By cooking everything yourself you will know exactly what has gone into each meal and many of Joe’s recipes are freezer-friendly, meaning you can batch cook and then you don’t have to worry about faffing around making dinner when you’re tired after a workout. Stock up on essentials – if you aren’t big on home cooking, you need to invest in some much-needed tools and ingredients. Think food scales for portion control, containers to store your meals for the week, a decent wok/pan, and a refillable water bottle to make sure you stay hydrated.

Summer 2016
Ab Fab launch for Fox Valley North Sheffield’s newest retail destination The long awaited Fox Valley shopping centre will be officially opened at 11am on June 16th – and there’s an Absolutely Fabulous special guest who will be launching the £50 million town centre project. Joanna Lumley OBE, who plays shopaholic Patsy in the hit TV comedy Absolutely Fabulous will be the guest of honour at the official opening event which will mark the launch of the first stores in a retail line up which is set to put this part of north Sheffield on the map as a major shopping destination. Work started on the first phase of this complex town centre project more than two years ago and the development has been almost ten years in the planning and has transformed a 28 acre former steelworks site in the heart of Stocksbridge, north Sheffield. As well as a 144,000 sq. ft. shopping centre the new Fox Valley development has also delivered
60,000 sq. ft. of new high spec office space. Stonebridge Homes are also building 118 new riverside homes on a neighbouring site. And on June 16th shoppers in the area will get the chance to visit the centre and help celebrate the investment in this part of north Sheffield which has created hundreds of new jobs and transformed a former steelworks site. The development has been delivered by the award winning Yorkshire retail property form Dransfield Properties Ltd. Mark Dransfield said: “This is undoubtedly our flagship development and we are absolutely delighted to be welcoming Joanna Lumley to officially open the new centre, it will be an extremely proud day also for everyone involved in the project and I hope for everyone in the local community who have watched Fox Valley take shape over the last two years.

Fox Valley has a rich heritage and a proud past and as the area enters a new chapter that history is remembered across the new development. The 28 acre development once housed part of the steelworks and it neighbours Tata Speciality Steel. It was here that Samuel Fox patented the paragon frame umbrella in the 1850’s which was invented
by his friend and employee Joseph Hayward. Joseph Hayward and Samuel Fox are remembered in the names and the artwork at the centre as well as Harry Brearley, who invented stainless steel and whose name is also remembered in one of the new buildings at Fox Valley. The paragon umbrella is also reflected in the artwork and in the iconic umbrella shaped coffee shop which sits at the main entrance to Fox Valley. A history board charting the story of steel in the area has also been installed at the centre. Mark Dransfield, said: “This is a really special place with a fascinating and rich history and it’s important to us that we remember and reflect that here at Fox Valley. That is something which has been part of every aspect of the development – from the names of the buildings to the architecture. “This is a completely different and unique retail destination and we hope our shoppers will be impressed when our first stores open on June 16th. Fox Valley will be officially opened at 11am won June 16th. For more information visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk

Meet the Centre Manager Annabel Plumtree, is heading up the team at Fox Valley. She’s spent the last two years learning about all aspects of shopping centre management at Fox Valley’s sister centre; Marshall’s Yard in Gainsborough. As well as looking after the day to day smooth running of Fox Valley Annabel will also be planning a busy diary of events throughout the year as well as a regular weekly market and specialist seasonal markets. The new centre has a beautiful landscaped fountain area with an outdoor TV screen which is overlooked by restaurants and coffee shops which will be a focal point for many of the events and activities at Fox Valley.
Annabel said: “We are really looking forward to the centre opening and welcoming our first shoppers here at Fox Valley on June 16th. The buildings are looking fantastic now and it’s been great to see the finishing touches going in over the last few days, with the landscaping and signage all being put in place ready for the first stores to open.

Bringing a bit of Pete McKee magic to Sheffield’s newest retail destination The famous Sheffield artist Pete McKee has been tasked with bringing his wonderfully unique style to the artwork at Fox Valley. Pete’s iconic style has graced everything from cartoon strips to Paul Smith clothing and Oasis record covers, and now the largest McKee piece ever created can be seen at the new north Sheffield shopping centre. One of Pete’s Fox Valley pieces is a collaboration with the Sheffield sculptor Anthony Bennett to create a stunning Grandad Fox figure – the piece is cast in bronze and stands in pride of place at the entrance to the new centre. The statue stands 6 ft. 4ins tall and has been inspired by the fox which has been used as logo and emblem at the steelworks since it was founded by Samuel Fox in the 1840s. It also pays tribute to the paragon umbrella frame which was invented and developed on the site. Pete has also created a huge gable end mural, paying tribute to the men and women who worked at the steelworks in Stocksbridge, a stainless steel figure of Samuel Fox has also been installed at the new centre Pete’s work will be displayed in one of the units at Fox Valley when the centre opens in June. Pete said: “This is a great project to be involved with and I’m really pleased to be part of this new chapter for the area, we’ve looked into the history of the area and really tried to capture its personality. “We’ve had a few logistical challenges as they are really large pieces but I hope everyone who visits Fox Valley will enjoy seeing the work.”

GOLD RUSH
The British Gold Panning Association is coming to Sheffield this summer to search the River Don for buried treasure. And it’s all thanks to one Grenoside gold panner.
Peter with a small selection of BGPA chair Malcolm Thomas’ medals, including gold from the 2007 world championships
I
f you see people up to their waists in the River Don this summer, don’t be alarmed. Because it’s not wild swimmers or trout ticklers trying their luck in its murky waters, it’s members of the British Gold Panning Association (BGPA) – and they’re on the hunt for buried treasure. From 17 June until early October, Grenoside gold panner Peter Sampson and his fellow BGPA members will be donning their waders and striding out into the River Don to see what they can unearth. And while there’s no concrete evidence of gold (yet!) Peter has already found some unexpected gems. During his first foray into the river last year, at the first weir up from Hillfoot Bridge in Neepsend, he found several cannon balls, some cartridges, lots of knives and forks and a bayonet. “That was in just two-and-a-half hours,” said Peter, “so I started thinking about

what could be found over the course of three months. No-one has ever been prospecting in the River Don but gold tends to fall into cracks in the bed rock so we might well find some in there.” When Peter told BGPA chair Malcolm Thomas of his finds, Malcolm was intrigued and wanted to come to Sheffield to check out the river himself. After getting permission from Sheffield City Council, they have been granted access and the Old Red Lion in Grenoside has also kindly offered them overnight parking throughout the summer, as well as use of their facilities each Monday evening from 20 June. These Monday meetings are not just for gold panners to meet up and share stories – the public are encouraged to come down, too, as the BGPA will be giving back some of the artefacts they find in the river to the people of Sheffield. “We want to give people the

opportunity to take home a memento of Sheffield’s past, so every Monday from 8.30pm we’ll be giving some items away for free, and holding raffles for them to win equipment so they can have a go themselves.” There’ll also be speeches on gold panning and advice on how to master the technique. If you fancy learning about the hobby in a little more detail, there are DVDs behind the Old Red Lion bar that you can hire for free. The first place members will pan is near Ball Street in Neepsend, on the former site of James Dixon & Sons, and from there they’re planning to check out everywhere from Attercliffe to the Rivelin Valley. Posters in the Old Red Lion will confirm their whereabouts each day, and they’re inviting everyone to come down and watch them in action. “We’ll show them how to use a pan with copper so they can learn the technique,” said Peter. “The most important thing is learning how to ‘read the river’, so we’ll explain all about that, too.” Gold panning hit the headlines last month when seasoned prospector and former president of the World Gold Panning Association Vince Thurkettle revealed he’d found Britain’s biggest ever nugget worth £50,000 off the coast of Anglesey, Wales, in 2012. If you’d like to learn more about the Royal Charter shipwreck from which this gold came, a DVD on the subject is available to hire from the Old Red Lion. It was after watching a gold panning documentary on Charlie Smart – one of Scotland’s most successful prospectors – 12 years ago that Peter got hooked. “I saw the ‘Charlie’s Gold’ documentary and got in touch with the British Gold Panning Association who invited me up to Wanlockhead – the highest village in Scotland – for the British and Scottish Gold Panning Championships, which take place on spring bank holiday every year. I was supposed to be going with my grandson but when he couldn’t come, he told me to take a camcorder so I could show him what he had missed out on.” This last-minute decision proved to be a pivotal part of Peter’s BELOW & RIGHT: The gold collection of Mike Jones, one of the goldmedal winning team from 2007. Mike sold his Welsh gold to a museum in Cardiff for many thousands of pounds

gold panning journey. For the next few years, he recorded his visits to Scotland and got to know the members who are now his friends. “The hospitality is second to none and I’ve met some real characters who have shown me some weird and wonderful places,” he said. “Out of respect, there are some things on my camera I will never show – they’re tricks of the trade and they can take decades to learn.” These skills proved particularly useful to the BGPA when a team comprising five of its members – including Malcolm, Vince and one of the UK’s top prospectors Mike Jones – scooped five medals at the World Gold Panning Championship in Canada in 2007. They’re hoping to replicate this winning streak when the competition comes to the UK from 4 to 13 August 2017 and around 1,000 spectators from 22 countries descend on the Scottish town of Moffat. Peter, however, won’t be competing. Classing himself as a novice, he has devoted more of his time to recording the activities of BGPA members than getting stuck in himself. But in this pursuit, he says, he’s discovered something even more valuable. “I’ve always enjoyed the outdoor life and Scotland and Wales are very picturesque, so to be out there in summertime, as far as I’m concerned it’s paradise. And when people ask if I’ve found gold, I say I’ve found something more precious than that – I’ve found friendship.”
Get in to gold panning • If you fancy giving gold panning a go, visit www.goldpanningsupplies.co.uk to buy your equipment. Mention ‘the Grenoside man’ – as Peter is known in the association – and Leon Kirk of Gold Panning Supplies may even offer you a discount. Leon also provides gold panning lessons at Wanlockhead. • To find out more about the hobby, or to join the British Gold Panning Association, visit www.britishgoldpanningassociation.co.uk.

Are your children struggling at school? How can you help?
Good parenting can pay off at school
I
t was reported last month that white children are falling behind other groups at GCSE. And in 2014, the gender gap at GCSE had grown to nearly nine per cent, with the boys coming off worse. The report highlighted a lack of support from parents as being the key – to be specific, parental engagement. I can imagine hardworking parents throwing their arms in the air in exasperation at this, saying ‘how can we do more?’. On reflection, however, it is clear – wishing on a star is unlikely to get us very far. If we want the best for ourselves or our families, we have to find a way of putting in the hard yards. If they can be made easier, then so much the better. Parenting is a difficult task for which, in my experience, we are only prepared by our own experience as children and bits of information (often conflicting) from sources such as the internet. First, I would caution against being passive – expecting someone else to wave the magic wand for us. Of course, teachers and other professionals have the job of education, but it is so much more than that. Don’t rely on others to make it work. Ask yourself what you can do. Here are a few areas to consider: routines, homework time, bed time, attendance at parents’ evenings, TV and computer time. There will be many more. I would suggest planning what you want well in advance and being realistic. After all, these routines must be kept going for a long time if
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
they are to become good habits. Another ingredient that cannot be missed is graft. A child can’t magic good grades out of thin air. Genius is, as Thomas Edison observed, ‘one per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration’. I am sorry to bear bad tidings at this point to all our younger readers. No matter how many bells and whistles are added to learning there is an element of boredom that goes with success. Would it do any harm to experience it? It may make the good things in life seem even better! Finally, be positive and expect good things. Of course, they won’t come without effort, but being affirmative is a proven way of making it easier to achieve. David Kaye is the Centre Director for Kip McGrath Education Centres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield and is a former headteacher with 25 years’ experience in South and West Yorkshire.

Determined to keep up with the ever-changing times, the club has adopted a refreshing new approach that makes everyone feel welcome and able to take up the hobby. As marketing chair and member Debra Travis explains, this new way of thinking is in line with England Golf’s initiative to get more people into the sport. “The idea behind it is to open the sport up to more people. We all have busy lives and the thought of starting a new pastime that could take up to five hours to play has put many people off in the past. “Golf clubs realise that if they want to retain their members and, of course, attract the younger ones, they have to move with the times – gone are the stuffy rules of strict dress codes.” As well as a real push to recruit junior members, they have also introduced new nine-hole competitions. Taking half the usual time, these options open up the possibility of playing golf to many people who have previously felt unable to take part due to their other professional or social commitments. With this evolution has come another first for the club – a female greens chairperson. Cath Lake, the lady who organised
the 72-hole Macmillan golf challenge featured in Pulse last July, is delighted to take up this position. And these aren’t the only changes at the club. Work on the new driving range, which is being supported by a Lottery Grant from Sport England, will commence soon. This new practise facility will be open to all – including the general public – and will be a welcome addition to the area for all budding golfers. The land where the club resides has a fascinating past and has had many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing ground before being transformed into a beautifully manicured golf course. The course was designed in 1907 by Martin Hawtree, one of the most famous golf course architects in history. Martin and his company worked on courses all over the world including Royal Birkdale and Sunningdale. More recently, his company has been working with Donald Trump on his new courses, including Trump International. Performance is the key ingredient in Jordan Cutforth’s round-up of the latest motoring news. Bringing it down a level
Ember’s in Probably the most bold yet stylish edition of the Evoque yet. This Ember edition brings a red and black theme to the Evoque’s already beautiful design making it an even more distinctive sight on the road. As well as giving the exterior a more stand-out appearance – Santorini black body with contrasting Firenze red on the roof and front/rear tow eye covers, satin black 20-inch alloys, Narvik black grill, black exhaust finishers and darkened front and rear lights – the interior has had a makeover to with ebony black seats with contrasting pimento red stitching, black and red carpet mats and gloss black trim finishes. There’s also a new InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with a 10.2-inch tablet style screen. Prices start from £47,200. Limited availability.
If you feel the full-fat AMG experience might be just a tad too much then don’t fear, Mercedes has you covered. Instead of the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 found in the C63, Mercedes is offering buyers a 367hp 3.0-litre V6 motor known as the C43. Available in Saloon, coupe and estate body styles, the C43 will officially hit 62mph from rest in 4.7 seconds (4.9 for the estate) and go on to a top speed of 155mph. All models come with a 4MATIC four-wheel drive system and a nine-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Standard equipment includes Artico leather, Dinamica microfibre upholstery with red stitching, 18-inch black alloys, black door mirrors and silver brake callipers with ‘AMG’ lettering. Prices start from £44,460.
Just four kicks… Porsche has released an all-new version of their mid-engined coupe sports car. Unlike previous Cayman models, which came with riotous naturally-aspirated flat-six engines, this newest 718 iteration comes with two fewer cylinders – a flat-four ‘boxer’ unit. Like the previous generation of Caymans, there are two engine sizes to choose from. The standard Cayman comes with a 2.0-litre unit developing 300hp whereas the Cayman S gets a 350hp 2.5-litre motor. The Cayman sprints to 62mph in 4.7 seconds and 4.2 seconds for the Cayman S. Top speeds are 170mph and 177mph respectfully. Apart from the deeper burbling tone of the new exhaust, the new Cayman can be distinguished by new-look bumpers, as well as a change in interior design. Prices start from £39,878.
Style and practicality The Honda Civic Sport is a car for those who want the comfort, practicality and running costs you’d expect from a traditional family car but yearn to have a much sportier appearance. The Civic Sport already plays this role extremely well as it can achieve up to 76mpg on the combined cycle, yet it takes a lot of design cues from the bonkers-looking Type R hot hatchback. It’s the best of both worlds. Along with the brilliant 1.6-litre diesel and the 1.8litre petrol engine that are available for the Sport, you can now have a 99hp 1.4-litre i-VTEC petrol unit. Available with a slick shifting six-speed manual gearbox this new entry-level Sport variant will start from £18,360. Available to order now.
