EDITOR’S WELCOME
IT has been an extremely sad time in Hailsham with the tragic death of Jack Field, a 24-yearold man who was the victim of a terrifying attack last month. I would like to start my column by expressing my sadness following the incident and by sending my condolences to Jack’s friends and family. I’ve visited the scene a number of times and read the incredible floral tributes which have been left and from what I’ve read, Jack was an incredible man and made a huge impression with the people he knew in Hailsham. The outpouring of love from the people I’ve spoken to is incredible. It is impossible to know what his family is going through right now and I sincerely hope justice is served. In other news, it was great to attend the recent Fire Station ‘Have a Go Day’ and speak to some of the firefighters and potential new recruits. (See page 17). It is easy for us to criticise the fire service when the Hailsham crew cannot be deployed to local incidents - but without new recruits, it’s going to become ever harder for them in the future. Now is a great time to join the fire service as they are always on the lookout for new recruits. The message given to me on the day is, never to rule yourself out, as there are so many different roles within the service to suit everyone. More information about joining can be found on the East Sussex Fire and Rescue website. Finally, I’d like to wish all our readers and advertisers a fantastic Christmas and we’ll be back in 2024. MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER FOLLOWING DEATH OF 24 YEAR-OLD JACK
P
OLICE have charged a man with murder following a fatal collision in Hailsham. Emergency services were called to Diplocks Walk at around 11pm, on 18th November, to reports of a car colliding with a pedestrian. Twenty-four-year-old Jack Field from Hailsham was sadly confirmed deceased at the scene. A second man suffered minor injuries. Kyle Dumble, 26, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder, attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, disqualified driving and driving without insurance. He will appear in court early next year prior to his trial. A 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on conditional bail. Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell said: “The investigation continues and our thoughts remain with the victim’s family at this tragic time. “I understand this has been a distressing incident for the whole community, and I would like to thank the public for their patience and support throughout the investigation. “We are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or events leading up to it, or anyone with pictures or footage that could help, to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Novio. Or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org “Information, footage or pictures relating to the incident can also be uploaded to our Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP), under Operation Novio. The MIPP can be accessed via mipp.police.uk. Read a tribute to Jack on Page 4.

MORE THAN £16,000 RAISED FOR ‘LOVING SON, BROTHER AND FRIEND’
A
N incredible amount of money has been donated for a memorial bench and to support Jack Field’s family following his tragic death. Jack, known locally as Fieldy, worked for Waitrose and Callenders Resturant in Hailsham, and has been described as the ‘true salt of the earth’ and ‘truly one in a million, a real gent.’ Hundreds of floral tributes have been left at the scene on Western Road at Diplocks Walk and thousands of comments online remembering Jack’s ‘infectious smile’. A number of gatherings have been held at the scene in memory of Jack by friends and Chinese lanterns were also released a week after his death. One of Jack’s many close friends, Henry Meyer, told Hailsham News: “It’s been incredible to see the support and love he’s received this week, it really reflects how he carried himself in this life. When people pass away we tend to deify them but I can tell you for certain that this gentleman was truly salt of the earth.” Hailsham Mayor, Councillor Paul Holbrook, who laid some flowers at the scene, said: “I made a visit to the site to pay my respects on behalf of the Mayor and the Town Council, and saw the lovely flowers displayed along the grass verge. It was a moving tribute to a well-liked lad in our community. He added: “Our hearts go out to the family for their sad loss at this time.” Donations can be made by visiting: https://gofund.me/32324586 or scan this code.

PAIR JAILED FOR SUPPLYING BULLET CARTRIDGES AND MAGAZINES TO ILLEGAL GUN FACTORY A
MAN and a woman have been sentenced for supplying materials used to create live ammunition and pistols at an illegal gun factory following a National Crime Agency investigation. Lee Rice, 38, of Eden Grove Road, Byfleet, Surrey, and Marie Brazier, 49, of Irene Avenue, Lancing, West Sussex, were found guilty of conspiracy to sell or transfer prohibited weapons on 3 August after a 12-day trial at Hove Crown Court. They appeared at Lewes Crown Court today [10 November] where a judge sentenced Rice to eight years’ imprisonment, and Brazier to six years. The criminal factory on Diplocks Way, Hailsham, was manufacturing handguns from scratch, and is believed to be the first of its kind discovered by UK law enforcement. It was shut down in 2018 during an NCA operation. Kyle Wood, 34, of Littlehampton, West Sussex, and Greg Akehurst, 34, of no fixed abode, were responsible for distributing the factory-made firearms to criminals. In May 2019, they were sentenced to a total of 29-and-a-half years in prison. The craftsman making the guns, Mark Kinman, 64, from Hailsham, East Sussex, pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm and manufacturing

firearms, but died in prison before he was due to be sentenced. During the raid of the Hailsham unit, officers located three guns — two of which had been made there — and component parts consistent with the production of an additional 121 pistols. Law enforcement agencies have since encountered 13 pistols made at the factory in the possession of criminals. One such weapon, recovered in North London, was found to have Rice’s DNA on its internal spring, the jury was told. Brazier, Rice and Akehurst bought a total of 366 inert rounds from military memorabilia websites over a five-month period in 2018, with further attempts to purchase hundreds more.
They also purchased 11 pistol magazines. The rounds were taken to the factory where they were filled with gunpowder and had a primer added so they could be used as viable ammunition for the manufactured pistols. Emails sent from Brazier Seized ammunition to online militaria retailers showed her order receipts as well as her efforts to acquire more ammunition parts. In one email, following an order of 50 rounds, she wrote, “do you know anywhere in the UK I could source more from?”.
The factory discovered in Diplocks Way
NCA officers arrested Rice and Brazier at their home addresses in February 2019. As Brazier was cautioned, she commented, “I don’t know anything about no guns”. Analysis of their phone data uncovered calls between them and those attending the factory while it was operational. Calls between the group occurred as orders for the ammunition materials were made online, and data further revealed that Rice’s phone was in the vicinity of the gun factory in July 2018 — just weeks before it was raided by the NCA.

he inaugural Sussex International Film Festival has been hailed a success showcasing eight different films and concluding with the Short Film Competition including an awards ceremony. The weekend last month screened films made in Sussex and by Sussex filmmakers, including two films made by students from Zylo Film School.
The Moo Man, a film about local Hailsham Dairy farmer Steve Hook was shown as part of the festival, along with Adventure Boyz, directed by local man Howard Ford, and Rocketman, edited by our head judge Chris Dickens, exHailsham resident and Hailsham school pupil. Amongst the judging panel was local artist and composer Simon Woodgate. Q&A sessions were held after each of these films, giving the audience an opportunity to talk to the filmmakers and ask them questions as to how and why the films were made. Chris Dickens even brought his Oscar along to show the audience and gave them the opportunity to hold it.

Local college students, including those from Hailsham Community College, East Sussex College Group and Bader College (Queen’s University, Canada) based at Herstmonceux Castle, attended various sessions and welcomed the opportunity to be part of the festival. The last day of the event showcased the nominations of the Film Festival competition which attracted over seven hundred entries from around the world. Some of these filmmakers attended the ceremony, with one travelling from France especially. The morning session highlighted the Best Student Short films and in the afternoon, the
semi-finalists with the finalists being shown over two sessions in the evening. The day ended with a prestigious black-tie award ceremony, presented by local actor Greg Draven and Emily Issacs, who announced the winners in each category with the overall winner winning £500. For those winners who were unable to be present, some of the sponsors of the festival, Hailsham FM, Prints Regent and Roland Dunn were there to receive the awards on the winners’ behalf. It’s hoped the success of this year’s event will pave the way for an annual event from next year.

THE FALLEN REMEMBERED AT MEMORIAL SERVICE H PHOTOS: PAUL GIBSON
UNDREDS of residents and officials paid their respects last month at the town’s war memorial to remember those who died for their country. Reverend Peter Clark led the ceremony which was attended by council leaders, local groups, veterans and representatives from the armed forces. A parade was led from the Vicarage Field car park to the memorial and two-minutes’ silence was held after the last post was played. Councillor Paul Holbrook joined other councillors and representatives from the Armed Forces, their families, veterans and local organisations for the playing of the Last Post, observing of two-minute silence and laying of wreaths at 11am. Prior to the Service, there was a Service held at Hailsham Parish Church, followed by a Parade of the Hailsham & District Standard by Armed Forces veterans and local dignitaries together with Hailsham army and air cadets proceeding towards the war memorial in Vicarage Field. Grateful to everyone who took time out to attend and remember the fallen, Councillor
Holbrook said: “The Remembrance Service was an opportunity and a time for us to reflect and remember the sacrifices made both in the past and in current conflicts and thank them. It is important that as a community we continue to remember those who lost their lives for their country and the Act of Remembrance continues to be of great significance to the people of Hailsham, including the members and staff of the Town Council.” “It is a privilege for the Town Council to have supported the Royal British Legion Hailsham & District Branch again in terms of organising this year’s Remembrance Day events – and marking the occasion. I’m glad people came along and paid their respects and, from these commemorative events, we aim to ensure that our armed forces community is well represented.” Councillor Chris Bryant paid tribute to the town council’s sub-committee who made sure the event happened. He told Hailsham News: “I’d like to thank the committee and especially Lizzie Snowdon from the Royal British Legion Hailsham Branch who always ensures the Remembrance event goes without a hitch.”

A CHRISTMAS FOR ALL THE CARE HOME CONTINUES EVENT COMMUNITY AT HAILSHAM CREATED DURING PANDEMIC PARISH CHURCH
I
BY VICAR RORY GRAHAM
F you live in Hailsham parish, you should be receiving an invitation to one of our Christmas services through your door in the coming weeks. Who isn’t excited by piles of presents nestling under a well-lit Christmas tree? Opening those shiny parcels of joy is one of the most exciting things about Christmas. When do you open yours? For many of us, there is the time-honoured Christmas morning ritual of unwrapping presents amid shrieks of delight. Do you know what you are getting this year? Have you been in amongst them, shaking and squeezing and trying to work out what your brother has bought you? The Christmas jackpot is when you give someone a gift which you know they are going to love, because at that moment you aren’t just giving a thing to someone, you are handing over yourself, your thoughtfulness and your care to someone you love. That kind of present doesn’t just say ‘I clicked on the link you sent through,’ it says ‘I know you, I love you and I bought this for you.’ To be on the receiving end of a present like that is almost too good to be true. You feel valued, known, appreciated and loved far beyond the value of the actual gift. At Hailsham Parish Church our Christmas plans are built around the astonishing truth that, in Jesus, God has given us the very best present.
The gift of his Son is a personal present of love to each one of us. We are celebrating this gift with special services and events planned all the way through December and we hope that you will find a number of things you’d like to come to. Our services range from the traditional to the informal, from a candle-lit service of lessons and carols to the ever-popular Christmas Eve Christingle. You’ll be warmly welcomed and we hope you will be able to stay and enjoy a mince pie or two afterwards. We would love to welcome you and the Christingle Services on Christmas Eve are particularly popular — we have three in the afternoon at different times (3pm, 4.30pm and 6pm), so there will be plenty of room for all the family. I look forward to meeting you and sharing this precious gift with you. Wishing you a very joyful Christmas. www.hailshamchurch.org for more details.
A FESTIVE light event is set to continue this month at a Hailsham Care Home following its success during lockdown. Quinnell House, located on Quinnell Drive, started a Festive Light Evening in 2021, to allow families to see each other outdoors during the pandemic, safely. It was so successful, the home decided to make it an annual event. Bianca Wilson from the home said: “Our residents absolutely love to see the magic of the Festive lights all around the garden. Over the years, the outdoor light walk has grown to include raffle prizes, mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, mince pies and Geno’s Java coffee van stopping by for a warm drink. “It symbolises the start of the Christmas season for us. We arrange all the lights in different areas of the garden so that everyone can enjoy them, be it for an outside walk or through the windows. “We make sure everyone has access, all through December. This event has grown so much in the last two years, we are excited to see how it
continues to flourish. One of the home’s residents, Mary, said: “It’s so pretty, you just want to keep looking. Our families enjoy spending time with us and appreciate something different with their loved ones. This year’s Festive light event is due to take place at the home on 8th December.

FIREFIGHTER RECRUITMENT EVENT HAILED A SUCCESS T
PHOTOS: PAUL GIBSON
HE horrendous weather didn’t stop wannabe firefighters taking part in a recent recruitment day held at Hailsham Fire Staton. It was held in conjunction with the station’s annual open day and was an opportunity for potential new recruits to try their hand at some of the day-to-day challenging tasks of a modern firefighter. Kids were able to climb on board the station’s fire pump, use the powerful hose and also see some examples of the biggest dangers in our homes which are the main cause of a fire. These included a melted mobile phone which was charging on a bed and caught fire, overloaded extension leads and old electric blankets. The service holds annual electric blanket testing where residents can get theirs tested. Around 20% fail the safety tests, according to the staff at Hailsham Fire Station. Rescue told Hailsham News: “We’ve been very successful in the last few weeks at Hailsham, we’ve streamlined our application process so something that used to take approximately nine months, is now taking between eight weeks and three months. “We saw our first success story of that yesterday, where we had on-call recruits pass out, and we had two applicants who are now going to be stationed at Hailsham as on-call firefighters. We’ve had approximately 14 interested people come through today. “I think the really important message to send about the roles of an on-call firefighter is don’t rule yourself out. I think there are a lot of people out there who think that they’re not the right type of person. But, the on-call role is extremely flexible and what we’re looking for is the right type of person with the right qualities. So, someone with some determination, some drive and ultimately, wants to do good for our community, especially here, helps.”

CONVICTED FRAUDSTER CHARITIES BENEFIT TO BE SENTENCED FROM MONEY RAISED
A
FORMER employee of the Hailsham Memorial Institute Club who stole more than £100,000 from the venue is due to be sentenced. As Hailsham News was going to press, 64-year-old Jeanette Gardner was due to appear at Hove Crown Court to be sentenced following her conviction in October. She was appointed the paid Jeanette Gardner role of administrator in 2006 and engineered absolute financial control of the club. However, in 2019, club members became concerned about Gardner’s actions when they failed to receive confirmation of receipt of funds raised at a ‘Full Monty’ charity event held by HMI in aid of Orchid Cancer Charity. After an internal investigation conducted by HMI, Gardner was dismissed from her role in August 2019. The matter was then reported to Sussex Police. A three-year investigation ensued which uncovered large-scale frauds, thefts and abuse of position offences. The investigation found Gardner had stolen from HMI and made fraudulent claims against the club. These included falsifying her employment contracts to pay herself a higher salary, giving herself pay rises without authorisation, withholding payments to HMRC, false accounting and laundering £26,000 of the stolen money out of the country to India.
She falsified weekly accounts to steal cash from the social club and would often include personal purchases in receipts claimed back from the club. Payments were also received into her bank account for events and services provided by HMI. Gardner failed to pass on money raised at HMI fundraising events to charities, including approximately £3,000 to the male cancer charity Orchid. During the investigation, Gardner also brazenly made fraudulent claims for Universal Credit, which were uncovered by police. Her trial began on 18 September 2023 at Hove Crown Court. During the trial, she pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position but maintained her innocence in relation to all the other charges. On Friday 20 October, Gardner was found guilty of eight of the 11 charges against her: four counts of fraud by abuse of position; fraud by false representation; theft; transferring criminal property; and fraud by failing to disclose information. She was found not guilty of three charges — two counts of fraud by abuse of position; and one count of theft. Hailsham News approached Gardner for a comment as she left a local restaurant ahead of her sentencing, which was refused. The result of her sentencing can be found at https://hailsham.news
AT BONFIRE EVENT
Hailsham Bonfire Society has presented cash boosts to two chosen charities with money that was raised at the town’s annual bonfire celebrations. HBS President, Rose Pickett, presented the cheque to St Wilfrids Hospice, and Corporate Community Fundraiser Debbie Elliott and Community Fundraiser Michele Mitchell were at the presentation to receive the money. The Society’s ‘Captain of bucket collections’, Adrian Woodford, also presented a cheque to members of the Blue Van Ex Forces Veterans’ drop-in organisation. Both received £608, which was donated by members of the public during the Hailsham Bonfire Society celebration night on the 21st October. Chairman Dave Chapman said: “We would like to say a big thank you to the public for their generous donations allowing us to support these two good causes.” The presentation took place at The Crown Hotel, Hailsham, on Monday 27th November

KNOW YOUR GARDEN
By Emma Reece, Head Gardener at Bates Green Garden
Bates Green Garden, an RHS Partner Garden, is open every Wednesday until 25th October 2023. For details please go to the website www.batesgreengarden.co.uk and follow the garden on Instagram @batesgreengarden
“The gardening season officially begins on January 1st, and ends on December 31.” — Marie Huston We have had some incredibly wet weather recently which has proved challenging for us gardeners. I doubt very much that you have been able to get on with any of the tasks I suggested last month apart from planting bulbs in containers. The beds and borders are far too wet to stand on unless one uses boards to work from which can be a challenge in itself. If you do resort to that, then I would advise you to grit the boards as they can be precarious otherwise when wet and muddy. The frequent temptation is to hibernate with a cup of tea or a glass of something, perhaps with seed or tool catalogues but I would urge you bundle yourselves up at least once a day and go into your garden just to achieve even one thing. You will feel all the better for it and many winter garden disasters can be averted. Wait until any torrential rain has stopped, pull on your hat and then treat yourself to a walk and a really good look. There is something new to be seen every day, only this morning I arrived at work in the pouring rain to find this gem peeking out at me from underneath the Abelia. Iris unguicularis, the Algerian Iris, usually flowers in late winter. Here at Bates Green Garden, they are planted at the base of a wall and flower almost continuously from now until March or even April. The deep violet flowers are strongly scented and last well in a vase if cut at the bud stage. While you are out and about, check any protective coverings that you have in place be it fleece, frames or plastic. The wind can easily get underneath causing rips or flaps that the cold weather will investigate for sure. Retie or secure firmly. The same goes for trellis and fencing panels.
If the rain seems as though it will never end, and you are fortunate enough to own a greenhouse then go and give it a really good sort out. Remove all the clutter that has accumulated over the summer and grab your broom to start sweeping. You may already have the space full of overwintering plants in which case you might wish to consider bubble wrapping your green house to prevent it from freezing. I have carried this out in various glasshouses over the years and, although we are all trying to use less plastic, you can reuse the original wrap for many years so long as you label each section and put it away carefully at the end of the winter. Clips can be purchased from any hardware store or garden centre for attachment purposes. Check all the window seals and inspect the panes for cracks or loose glass. On dry days, open up the greenhouse in daylight hours to allow air to circulate thus preventing the grey mould Botrytis from getting a hold on your cherished plants. If the greenhouse is empty for the winter, then you can get on and scrub it out with hot soapy water and environmentally friendly washing up liquid. Get into all the nooks and crannies so that once you start your seed sowing regime the house will be sparkling with no lurking pests or diseases. Do the outside too, the rain will have softened the grime which will be easy to remove. The cleaner the glass, the more light your plants will receive, which will contribute positively to their health and vigour. How about finally sorting out your shed? Harriet and our new student, Emma Tee got to work on our Potting Shed last week and we are immensely pleased with the results. Everything is in its rightful place and
is easy to find. This perfect state usually lasts until the middle of Spring when all our good intentions fly out of the window, as we rush around with seed trays and watering cans. There is important An organised shed pruning to be carried out in December. Certain shrubs must be pruned before the end of the year as otherwise they will ‘bleed’. This condition manifests itself as sap either leaking out from a pruning cut or sometimes flowing copiously. Sap falls down the stems of plants in autumn and early winter as they become dormant. It rises again in the Spring, but in certain plants, this Wreath made from material foraged from Bates green garden can happen in mid to late winter. So, if you are the proud owner of any birch trees, grape vines or a walnut tree then you would be well advised to prune them now. Pruning is a delightfully uplifting task, and you will feel a warm glow afterwards. If you are celebrating Christmas, then I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very merry time. If you are not so inclined, then I wish you a cosy, peaceful and relaxing mid-winter season. And winter sunshine for us all!

CRAFTED COFFEE LOUNGE, STONE CROSS
W
e fancied a change of pace this month, opting to break away from our usual evening routine, and so we ventured into the world of brunch. We’d just finished a few online meetings and had skipped breakfast, so it seemed the most sensible thing to do. The newest kid on the block, Crafted Coffee Lounge in Stone Cross, had been on our radar for the last few weeks since it opened, so it seemed like the most perfect solution for a spot of brunch. Crafted Coffee Lounge is a brand new café which serves all the drinks you’d expect from a café, but with the lovely addition of great, freshly-cooked food.
Situated in a small block of shops affording a corner plot, it’s easily spotted from the road. This spacious café offers brunch, light bites and lunches from early in the morning until 2pm, but is open for drinks right up until 4 pm and is now open on Sundays. When we first entered, the warmth and friendliness of the clientele was immediately apparent. And just being there for five minutes,

we already knew three people in there, and it’s only been open a matter of weeks, clearly confirming that it attracts my type of people there! Enhanced by gastro lighting and tasteful furnishings, the ambience is bright and airy, with loads of large windows flooding the space with natural light. A fabulous colour scheme gives a genuinely modern and stylish touch to the overall aesthetic. Accommodating small groups and embracing a child-friendly environment, Crafted Coffee Lounge caters to the diverse needs of everyone. Opting for the recommended ‘Full Stack,’ our culinary choice was a delightful The Breakfast Stack ensemble featuring toasted sourdough decorated with a medley of sausage, egg, crispy bacon, roasted tomato, mushroom, and Taste Potato and Chroizo Hash a side of beans — all for a modest £8.95. Additionally, we indulged in the gluten-free delight of ‘Potato & Chorizo Hash,’ a dish comprising pan-fried potato & smoky chorizo seasoned with spring onion and garlic, topped with poached eggs — also priced at £8.95. Accompanying these dishes were a pot of tea for one and a Chai latte. All food is freshly cooked to order. Each dish was presented beautifully on
colourful crockery and garnish, presenting a delightful combination that was not only visually appealing but also remarkably delicious, satisfying our palates with just the right portion sizes. The evident popularity of this establishment is striking, even within its first few weeks of operation, as witnessed by the continuous stream of patrons coming and going. Many of these individuals appear to be repeat visitors, indicating that the café has already carved a niche in the community. This flourishing popularity suggests that it is destined to become a favoured destination, whether you’re making a deliberate excursion or simply passing through from one town to another. Undoubtedly, it stands out as the perfect pitstop, attracting a diverse clientele seeking a memorable and enjoyable experience. The café’s appeal extends beyond its interiors, as it boasts the added advantage of outdoor seating. Anticipating the arrival of next year’s summer months, I excitedly await the opportunity to enjoy this feature to its fullest potential. The prospect of enjoying the delightful vibe, charming offerings, and perhaps a touch of sunshine in the outdoor seating area adds an extra layer of anticipation to future visits. The full meal, including drinks, cost £22.65 and not only looked great but tasted great too. We’ll definitely be back, but I’m guessing this is going to be a popular place for many more people and parties too, so pre-booking may be on the cards! A collection of charming extras, including cakes, crisps, and calendars. Additionally, there are packs of cards, make-your-own jewellery, and drawings specially curated to cater to the entertainment needs of the younger visitors. Find Crafted Coffee Lounge at 88 Mimran Road, Stone Cross, Pevensey, which has already racked up almost a thousand followers on Facebook!

LAURIE’S POEM CORNER Laurie Wilkinson is a locally famous, published Poet who thrills and entertains at many locations promoting his books while raising money for Help for Heroes. To find out more about Laurie, see his books and support his cause, simply visit the website below.
I’m pretty sure it is right to say that every single one of us wants to feel, valued, recognised and appreciated, and I think we can also confidently add to that the appreciation of being loved and feeling safe too. Yes, almost unwittingly I have virtually quoted “Maslow’s 5 point hierarchy of needs”, so as I quietly laugh to myself, I must be correct, and again show that my column is well thought out for you, and not just thrown together, and with my following included poem it gets better. Thus from my eighth book Poetic Seeds to Fruition, comes my poem, ‘Your Story’.
YOUR STORY Everyone has their personal story And it may seem trivial or immense, To an unforgiving world audience Maybe observing from their fence.
For how this life is delivered To perceptive receiving ears, Can be with growing interest Or maybe boring them to tears.
But if a story appears insignificant To that owner it is paramount, And if maybe feeling overshadowed Theirs is the only one to count. For each individual life story However mundane or small it seems, Will for each and every one of us Contain experiences and dreams.
But of course there are people Who believe that their every word, And most miniscule life event Is just waiting to be heard, By rapturous, riveted audiences Taking every little fact down, When really laughing deep inside And regarding them as a clown.
Although the telling of this life Varies from one person to the next, With often very mixed reaction Depending on the spoken text.
So be very careful with your story And how you present all about you, For by far the greatest achievement Is if others speak of what you do.

FIVE MINUTES WITH…
LISA KEMP FROM HAULAWAY Haulaway is a family-run company and has been established for 30 years in Hailsham. It’s located in Apex Way, on the Diplocks Industrial Estate and specialises in skip hire, recycling and waste management services. We spoke to Office Manager Lisa Kemp to find out her passions for the town and a bit more about the business…
How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in Hailsham for all my life, this is where my family are from and based. I choose to live here because of my family and friends but also because of its location and the amenities. I think it’s easy to take living in such a varied landscape for granted. We are on the coast but have access to so much green space and woodland and should consider ourselves very lucky in my opinion. What is it you love about Hailsham? There are not many towns that can boast of having as many facilities as Hailsham does. We have our own cinema, market, radio station, newspaper and even our own skip company! This is as well as the unique shops, restaurants, and cafés owned and run by local people, with simple benefits such as free parking. Hailsham hosts many
events and whether it be the market on a Saturday or an event such as Hailsham Active Run or Hailsham Live, there is always such a good sense of community within the town. I think this is completely down to the people living and working here who care about where they live. Hailsham is also very good at honouring its history and tradition and getting people involved in events. What do you think needs improving in Hailsham? It has to be the traffic. Hailsham has so much potential and is almost a victim of its own success as so many people want to visit and travel around the town, but the infrastructure is struggling to cope, especially at rush hour. There is a lot of talk and surmising about how this can be managed and there always seem to be traffic lights along the main routes in and out of Hailsham. But, in my opinion, it feels like a lack of action is being taken to future-proof the town and provide solutions to alleviate traffic problems on and around the main routes in and out. How do you envisage Hailsham in ten years’ time? I like to think that Hailsham will be able to maintain its market heritage, although I think Hailsham is still subject to a lot of expansion towards Polegate, Hellingly and Herstmonceux. Hailsham has so much potential, and I am hopeful that improved infrastructure over the next few years will lead to increased and sustained footfall in the town centre. I can see empty shops being rejuvenated continually and Hailsham being a front-runner in local business, getting people to visit the high street rather than going online.
MONKSEY’S MUTTERINGS
HAILSHAM’S 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS BY BRAD MONKS This month, I thought I’d pen my very own ode of happiness to combat Mariah Carey’s screeching musings about what she does or doesn’t want for Christmas; I’m not expecting my offering to be a festive number one hit, to be honest. To save column space, I’ll let you infill the chorus and the other bits. You may have to change the tune slightly to fit all the words in, and it’s best sung after two bottles of Prosecco. On the 1st day of Christmas, my true love sent to me an MP that’s as present as the ghost of Christmas past but will suddenly appear for something being opened (even a bag of salt and vinegar crisps). On the 2nd day — two county councils seem to have no idea what’s going on but will happily ignore the constituents until voting time. On the 3rd day — three supermarkets, and none of them sell tinned lychees. I wanted some for a cocktail. On the 4th day — four pubs in the town, and none of them do a ploughman’s. I don’t know why, but I really enjoy a ploughman’s lunch. On the 5th day — five schools with more inset days than there are potholes in the town, which is
quite a few. On the 6th day – six sets of temporary traffic lights, that have been there so long they are tourist attractions; before long, the National Trust will be charging coach parties to come and see them. On the 7th day – seven barber shops, which always amazes me; then again, I haven’t had hair on my head for two decades, so what do I know? On the 8th day — eight miles of tailbacks, which is on a good day, I can get from Eastbourne to South Road quicker than the last mile from Cacklebury Stores to my house. On the 9th day — nine new building developments, although it is rumoured that all new houses come with a free speedboat and jetty. On the 10th day — 10 potholes on Hempstead Lane so deep that they could be hiding Lord Lucan and Shergar. On the 11th day – 11 charity shops that all have that funny smell about them. On the 12th day – 12 months of rising council taxes, to get less services and taken for a ride with most of what we pay for. Have a great festive period, and remember to keep smiling; it’s all a giggle. Until next time in 2024, people! www.verymagic.co.uk

Tell us about your business I work at Haulaway Skips and we have been based in Hailsham since 1991. We are a family run company and are experts in recycling and waste management. As well as providing skip hire to Hailsham and the surrounding areas we specialise in processing many different forms of plastic for recycling. We have secured contracts across the Southeast and the Channel Islands to take plastics from their HWRC sites and make these ready to be recycled into new products. We also like to support our local community through sports team sponsorships, our papers for St Wilfrid’s scheme and we also donated a defibrillator to the town to mark our 30 years of trading here. HAILSHAM AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATE
HAILSHAM CHAMBER MEETS WEALDEN DC FOR BREAKFAST — VIP’S AND BUSINESSES INVITED
D
uring recent times many proposals and ideas have been put forward for development within the Hailsham Town Centre including the Aspire project, an Old Peoples Home on the market site, and more recently moving a public toilet from the Asda car park to a site adjacent to the Leisure Centre. Hailsham is the hub of Wealden, the heart of the business community, a historic town with a livestock market dating back to 1252, a successful shopping centre with supermarkets and niche shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is equally important to businesses, whether they are in the town centre or within the greater Wealden area, that the town centre thrives and continues to develop. Hailsham Chamber of Commerce continually lobby for their members, we are in frequent dialogue with organisations such as Wealden District Council, Hailsham Town Council, East Sussex County Council, the Local Enterprise Partnership and Transport for the Southeast. As part of this dialogue, we are delighted to announce that Wealden District Council and the National Health Service will be presenting their proposals for the Hailsham Health and Wellbeing Hub. The team from Wealden DC will include Chris Bending – Corporate Director – Place, and officers responsible for the many aspects of maintaining and developing Hailsham Town Centre and surrounding area. In addition, Wealden are organising for a representative of the NHS to attend as they have substantial input into both the specification and funding of the proposed new Medical Hub. Supporting the meeting will be representatives from Hailsham District Council and Hailsham Forward as well as Hailsham Active so that, with the important attendance of businesses from both the Town Centre and the surrounding area including Diplocks, providing a full and balanced range of people and organisations
who will be joining and participating in what will prove to be an important and productive meeting. The success of Hailsham benefits everybody, businesses, the community at large and encourages visitors and new business, therefore, the importance of this meeting in creating avenues of communication and understanding cannot be overstressed in achieving this success. During the past twenty years Hailsham has changed dramatically, for some that is good and for others bad, one thing is sure though, and that is, this meeting will allow participants the chance to ask questions and give their opinions influencing the
future of Hailsham, the chance to develop relations between the participants. Finally, businesses attending and supporting Hailsham and District Chamber of Commerce at this meeting are signalling their interest and support for the future of Hailsham and their desire to not only be part of that future but to have an input as well.

HAILSHAM TENNIS CLUB WELCOMES WORLD-RANKING COACH
TWO WINS AND A DEFEAT FOR STRINGERS Suzy Larkin in action – Photo credit: Matt Kellett
Hailsham Tennis Club has a new head coach, Suzy Larkin. Suzy was a professional player, having trained in Spain at the Juan Carlos Ferrero Tennis Academy. She held a world ranking of 620 in both singles and doubles. She is looking forward to inspiring and developing both new and established players at the club.
REPORT BY STUART FAIRWAY
A
FTER two wins earlier last month, including a cup quarter-final, Hailsham Town rounded off a much weather-disrupted November with a 4-2 defeat away at top of the league Bosham. The Stringers were due to play Storrington at the start of the month, with Storm Ciaran having other ideas, but did get two games in the following week, starting away at Seaford Town II on Tuesday 7th November with a 3-2 victory in the Quarter Final of the Eastbourne FA Challenge Cup. Captain Harry Mills fired Hailsham ahead from close range on 44, with Seaford levelling soon after the restart only for Reece Coughlan to drill home a second for Hailsham on 49. Seaford again equalised on 61, before what proved to be the winner was scored on 71 when Will Gordon showed great tenacity to chase down a loose ball, pressurising the home ‘keeper into an error to tap home. Hailsham, whose Under 21 side won the competition in the 2016/17 season, now go on to the Semi-Finals, which will be
played in 2024 against opposition to be determined. The Stringers followed this up on Saturday 11th with a dominant 5-0 win away at Brighton & Hove Albion’s former home of Withdean, where Brighton Electricity. Will Ridgway saw a penalty saved in the first half, but a quickfire double from Matt Fear and Reece Styles put Hailsham ahead, with Eric Caicedo, Oscar Retnum and Styles again adding further goals in the second half. Rain again stopped play the following week, where Southwater should have been the visitors to The Beaconsfield, but there were no such concerns on Saturday 25th when Hailsham made the long trip west to Bosham (62 miles each way!), suffering a 4-2 defeat. The visitors had led at half-time after an own goal from the Bosham captain, but Bosham levelled soon after the interval. Reece Coughlan then put Hailsham back into the lead, but late goals from the hosts made it a disappointing trip home for the Stringers faithful. Off the field, manager Kyle Davis has added to his squad, with central defender Owen Muller and fullback Charlie White rejoining from Newhaven and AFC
Neil Downer, Johan Jooste, Jose Noya and Dom Walter
In November, the men’s team had a good win against Hampden Park at home, with first pair Johan Jooste and Neil Downer winning both their legs in straight sets, while second pair, Dom Walter and Jose Noya lost their first leg, but came through in the second, winning a championship tie-break.
Uckfield Town respectively, and forward Matt Fear rejoining after playing in a handful of games for the Under 23’s last season. Combative midfielder Dodge Westwood was voted by supporters as Player of the Month for October. Hailsham start December at home on Saturday 2nd in a rearranged League Cup game against Storrington (Kickoff 2pm) and also welcomes St Francis Rangers in the final game before Christmas (Saturday 16th December, 2pm).
Jo Coe, Hayley Allender, Heather Keating and Debbie Hughesman
The ladies 1st team also had a good win away to a young Brighton University team. First pair, Heather Keating and Debbie Hughesman won both their legs and second pair, Jo Coe and Hayley Allender won their first, but were narrowly beaten on a championship tiebreak in their second leg. So 3-1 victories for both teams left the men at the top of their table while the ladies lie third in theirs.
