Vaud 2016... you won’t have time to be bored!

Interview Yves Durand

Charlie Chaplin lives once more on the Vaudois Riviera

— Known for its exceptional concentration of cultural events, many known worldwide, the canton of Vaud becomes the ‘Swiss capital of festivities’ in 2016 and celebrates a plethora of anniversaries. These include the Montreux Jazz Festival’s 50th and the 70th birthday of the Septembre Musical classical music festival, the creation of “nest” to celebrate Nestlé’s 150 years, as well as the opening of the much-awaited Chaplin’s World.

Creator of the most anticipated project of the year, Yves Durand reveals the secrets behind the success of ‘Chaplin’s World’ in Corsier-sur-Vevey.

Chaplin’s World is much more than a museum! It’s an innovative and unique concept.

How does the visit unfold? The visit takes place in two phases. Ban Manor, occupied until recently by the Chaplin family, provides us with the setting for Charlie’s personal life. Thanks to the reconstitution of its main rooms along with furniture and his personal objects – displayed for the first time – the visitor will have the impression of participating in Chaplin’s family life, alongside his wife Oona and their eight children. As for a representation of the actor’s professional environment,

Yves Durand, why a Chaplin museum? Chaplin’s World is much more than a museum! It’s an innovative and unique concept, beginning with the fact that we occupy the actual residence where Chaplin lived for the last 25 years of his life. Visitors will therefore walk in the Tramp’s footsteps.

Vaud 2016... you won’t have time to be bored!

Opening 17 April

The last laugh Chaplin’s World The Tramp lives once more on the Vaudois Riviera. Set in the last house where Charlie Chaplin and his family lived on the hills above Vevey, Chaplin’s World reinvents the realm of the legendary artist, whose unique career married culture and entertainment. Witness the man’s intimacy, rediscover his genius and the cinematographic environment that nourished him, eat his mostloved dishes at the restaurant, and have a wander in the park.

Back to the future Alimentarium – Vevey In 2016 Nestlé is redesigning its Alimentarium, 30 years after founding what is the world’s first museum entirely dedicated to nutrition. With its exhibitions, demonstrations, tastings and cooking workshops, young and old are introduced to dietary traditions and advice that exist here and worldwide.

nest – Vevey In the same premises where 150 years ago Henri Nestlé invented the milk food that would revolutionise world nutrition, the Nestlé company launches a space devoted to the history of the firm and its brands. A fun and interactive museum takes the visitor on a path to the future.

this can be found in a big purposebuilt studio at the entrance to the property, where we dive into his life as an artist. The total-immersion space with sound, images and light reproduces Chaplin’s world of film-shoots in real film sets, inciting us to participate, through laughter and drama, in Charlie’s genius. The interactivity of the visit, present throughout, makes for some unprecedented experiences. Why has it taken 15 years to bring this project to fruition? I had to convince everybody that the visit would show total respect towards this personality, his legacy and profession. This was a significant undertaking! Then as time went on, the project improved and new partners came to join us, including Grévin International, which runs the famous wax museums. Also Chaplin’s World is now complemented by an excellent onsite restaurant, and the possibility to rent the space. So 15 years isn’t really that long for a museum that will attract visitors from all over the world! www.chaplinmuseum.com

With a profusion of activities both fun and educational, the canton of Vaud is a Garden of Eden for families.

Voyage to the land of climbing Three MOB (Montreux Oberland Bernois) trains

Voyage to the land of movement

It takes just 55 minutes to climb 1,600m and leave Lake Geneva and the Alps at your feet. Made up of a rocky promontory that dominates one of the best views of the country, Les Rochers-de-Naye is a unique destination. Whether you visit the Parc des Marmottes (marmot park), botanical garden, or spend a night in a yurt, all the activities will be delightful for children.

Leisure time at Cremin Farm, Moudon region In a Broye farm with a view over the mountains, time is of the essence as there’s a lot to do: horse riding, mountainbiking, SwinGolf or mini-golf, all on marked adventure tracks and in huts in the trees. This will be a perfect way to tire out the little ones, and their parents.

Cog train – Montreux / Les Rochers-de-Naye

Star Train – Vevey / Les Pléiades This 40-minute journey elevates you 1,000 metres to place your head in the stars. Liked for its ‘May Snow’ – a springtime carpet of daffodils as far as the eye can see – this charming little resort distinguishes itself with the Astropleiades educational path (sponsored by Claude Nicolier, Switzerland’s first astronaut), which introduces children to modern astronomy. GoldenPass Line – Montreux / Zweisimmen / Interlaken / Lucern With its three peaks and eight lakes, this excursion is representative of Switzerland’s beauty. Through the GoldenPass’s panoramic windows, the scenery rolls into view like at the cinema, keeping the children spellbound. In the shadow of the snow-covered peaks, the cows populate the pastures and the chalets are buried in flowers.

Lord Byron, the return Inspired by his visit to Château Chillon during his time in Switzerland in 1816, the great English Romantic poet wrote his epic poem entitled ‘The Prisoner of Chillon’. A major exhibition in the castle – Switzerland's most visited monument – commemorates this bicentenary. Chillon 29 April - 21 August, www.chillon.ch

With wind in their hair and no set timetable, they travel 250km through a breathtaking variety of scenery in the canton of Vaud, also passing through the cantons of Geneva, Neuchâtel and Fribourg. The purity of the lakes and countryside, the majesty of mountains and monuments, summer sports and culinary pleasures – all make their logbook a veritable source of inspiration! And as Julia loves visiting ruins and Oskar is interested in the history of civilizations, they add an historic leg to their journey by travelling to the heart of the canton of Vaud. 5. The Roman city of Aventicum “The splendour of Switzerland’s Roman past fascinates us at Avenches, which was founded as the country’s important capital 2,000 years ago. The site is like an open-air archaeological museum, with the bonus of a virtually intact amphitheatre, still used for all sorts of festivals in the summer.”

“Next stop: the medieval city of Estavayerle-Lac on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel. After visiting the church of the Dominican monastery and the Château de Chenaux, we are ready to move on. What joy, therefore,to find the beaches and marina, as well as the fabulous sport of wakeboarding and a water-ski cableway.”

Created in 2015, the Grand Tour of Switzerland passes through 13 tourist regions over a distance of 1,600km. Visitors who are more in a hurry will want to opt for the rural routes, like the 250km loop in the canton of Vaud and a choice of three other small excursions, easily achievable in a day.

La Grande Cariçaie Nature Reserve Time for a peaceful break in this lakeside marsh, a nature reserve where fauna and flora are protected and where migratory birds stop off during the change of seasons. This ecotourism paradise allows us to take a breather.”

Aigle – Montreux – Lavaux – vineyards as far as the eye can see “The sun-facing hills from Aigle to Geneva are lined with vineyards that yield delicious wines. Before taking a walk among the sublime terraced vineyards of Lavaux, named a UNESCO World Heritage site, where we stop for winetasting, we go to Montreux to bathe in the pleasant ambience of the Federal Festival of Music for a moment.”

12

The rural excursion Taking you from the Château de Vufflens to Servion Zoo, passing La Sarraz, Echallens and Moudon, this is the most familyorientated of all the excursions. The historical excursion This trip takes you from the medieval town of Morat to Payerne, via Roman Avenches and Estavayer-le-Lac. This excursion revisits Switzerland’s historic origins. The Alpine excursion With a departure from Aigle or Château-d’Oex, this trip packs in all the beauty the mountain has to offer.

“Small detour via Gletterns, the unique reconstructed prehistoric Swiss village where we dive into the Neolithic lakeside inhabitants’ life as it was 5,000 years ago.”

Salavaux Municipal beach “If you said you were having fun on a beach of fine sand in Switzerland, nobody would believe you. However it’s in Salavaux that we swim and play beach volley, with the extra bonus of getting sunburned after forgetting to bring sun cream!” 10

Lausanne – Nyon – tradition and modernity “A good dose of culture did us a lot of good before going home. We hurried from Lausanne’s Olympic Museum to the Art Brut collection, before watching a show at Lausanne Estivale. When rejoining the Grand Tour road to return to Nyon, we had to make several stops given the beauty of the views over the lake.” 11

"Villars has something for everyone," says chef Alain Montigny

Cress-rolled fera (whitefish) with Etivaz rösti Serves 2 persons

Ingredients

Why did you choose Villars? After 13 years at the head of the kitchens of the famous Dolce in the north of Paris, I wanted a change of scenery. I received job offers from all over the world, including in Japan and the United States, but in the end I chose the Chalet RoyAlp Hotel & Spa as it has a wonderful potential for development. Villars is a resort that has something for everyone and will grow. It is also easily accessible, and offers activities all year round. Look where we are – facing the sun and with this view!

Chalet RoyAlp Hôtel & Spa The RoyAlp is a peaceful haven. Overlooking Villars and facing the sun, the hotel’s appeal comes from its discrete luxury, an architecture that is both modern and traditional, a spa providing all manner of relaxation, and Alain Montigny’s innovative cuisine.

– 2 fera fillets – ¼ punnet of cress – 2 quail eggs – 50g Etivaz cheese – 1 slice of lard – 150g potatoes – 100g butter – 60g shallots – 1 onion – Salt, pepper – 10cl olive oil – 20cl fir tree bud spirit

Rösti Peel, wash and grate the potatoes, sauté in butter with finely sliced onion, place in mould and cook in the oven for 15 minutes at 180°c.

Sauce Fir tree flavoured butter Gently cook 30g of shallots, add 20cl of fir tree bud spirit, reduce down ¾ of liquid before whisking in the butter and adding salt and pepper.

Gently fry the quail eggs in butter. Dry the lard in the oven.

Serve, with sauce on the side.

For each portion, remove rösti from the mould, first placing a slice of Etivaz on top, followed by one of the quail egg and dried lard. Whitefish Lay the cress leaves on the fish fillet, season, then roll in cling film. Cook in steam oven for 8 minutes.

‘15’ in the Gault & Millau guide as soon as you arrive: that's certainly a first! A large part of my team followed me to Villars like my deputy, the pastry chef and sommelier. They are all excellent. We put in the extra work and it's together that we were afforded this record Gault & Millau recognition and the accolade of ‘Frenchspeaking Switzerland's discovery for 2016’.

What are your ambitions for the RoyAlp? My ambition is to bring freshness and refinement to the three restaurants' menus and to create a 'Jardin des Alpes' gastronomical table. I work only with pure ingredients and I have discovered some lovely produce in French-speaking Switzerland. I like to surprise with personal touches, respecting traditional recipes while also daring to innovate. In Villars we cater to a very precious niche market and the most important thing is that customers come back because they are satisfied.

— Sitting at an altitude of 1000m, the Lac de Joux is the ideal location for a flat hike along its shores. The complete circuit around the lake takes five hours, but it is possible to extend this with other interesting activities, all adding to its charm.

EXPERIENCE AN ESCAPE

Visit At l’Espace Horloger du Sentier, discover the know-how of watchmaking in a fun and welcoming space that uses cutting edge technology.

A wheat granary between two lakes Lausanne – Yverdon-les-Bains by bike Escape to the countryside by setting off on an invigorating 39km bike excursion and discover the rural charm of Vaud’s backcountry by gently pedalling from Lausanne to Yverdon-les-Bains, or the other way round.

Start of the hike at Le Pont On the bay that borders the end of the lake at Le Pont, the pebble beach spreads out like a long ribbon alongside the village and is the place of numerous summer activities. A formation of pedalos accompanies the hiker at the start of the circuit.

Lakeside shores towards L'Abbaye / Les Bioux

Walk along the exposed south shore and admire the stunning 17th century church at Les Bioux, which is designated an historical monument.

L’Orient to the end of the lake

In the Vallée de Joux, winters are long, meaning that farmers have been able, in the last 200 years, to learn the precise craft of watchmaking. Since then, it has become the flagship of Swiss industry. Watchmaking farms, once used by farmerwatchmakers are visible all along the trail.

Keep going until you reach L’Orient where the path is fitted with small bridges to respect the marshland’s ecosystem. More inquisitive hikers will want to go via Le Sentier to visit its museum dedicated to watchmaking.

Heading to Le Lieu

Le Lieu to Le Pont

Return to the tree-covered lakeside near the vast Risoux forest where the spruce tree grows, whose resonant wood is sought after by the world’s luthiers. Before leaving the lakeshore to climb up towards Le Lieu, admire the windsurfers at the Revers quarter as they set off into the water.

Finish gently with a downhill walk towards Le Pont and the small neighbouring Lac Béné. Visit Make a detour via Charbonnières to visit the Vacherin Mont d’Or farm-museum. Its winter cheese is so liquid that it is held together in a spruce box and, along with watchmaking, contributes to the region’s reputation.

Lausanne is the ultimate sports city and home to the Olympic Committee as well as many other international sports federations, while Yverdon-les-Bains is the most important thermal resort in French-speaking Switzerland. Between the two locations, the gentle hills of the Gros-de-Vaud region are ideal for cyclists who don’t want too strenuous a ride. This is the canton’s wheat granary, and enormous farms punctuate the rolling fields that lead to the Orbe plains. With the possibility of renting a bicycle from either of the two starting points and returning by train, Switzerland’s biking foundation (La Suisse à Vélo) has created a circuit adapted to Sunday sports enthusiasts that is not too tiring, with just the right amount of climbs and descents. Departure from Lausanne requires a bit more exertion with a climb of 240m over 5km, but the trail peaks at 690m and allows cyclists to weave in and out of wheat fields and forests.

The fabulous history of 8000 years of bread-making is retold in a fun and educational way at the Maison du blé et du pain d’Echallens. In the pretty village farm, built in 1790, budding bakers can even reserve a place to make their own bread. The Chemin des Blés (Wheat Path), which features nine themed stops over some 100km from Echallens to GrangesMarnand, allows for a relaxed type of tourism, bathing the visitor in authentic agricultural surroundings interlaced with natural and historic discoveries.

This summer I ...

... fulfil my dream of walking on a glacier

Above the Diablerets, between Scex Rouge and la Quille du Diable (the Devil’s Skittle), I walk across a real glacier with my hands in my pockets on an easy 3km marked out path. When I arrive I take a very pleasant food break at Refuge l’Espace. www.glacier3000.ch

— Summer thrills The birds are singing, the trees and gardens are in bloom, the warm weather arrives, the terraces are overflowing with people and you start to dream of those little delights that send shivers down your spine in summer.

... hit the slopes of the Vaud Alps

I schuss down the slope on my all-terrain scooter from the top of Braye in Château-d'Oex, or from Le Kuklos restaurant to Leysin village. After visiting the Paradventure Centre in Les Diablerets (offering outdoor activities) and equipped with a bicycle sporting motocross tyres, I launch myself down slopes that are seven to 15km long.

... throw myself into Bubble Soccer

On the shores of the lake at Yverdon-les-Bains, I have a go at Bubble Soccer, a crazy game invented by two Norwegians: I play football while wearing an enormous transparent inflatable bubble that only allows my legs to stick out. With the slightest contact with another player, I fall over and roll on the ground in fits of laughter. www.makemebubble.ch

Encounter with Jerôme Aké Béda, maître d’hôtel at Auberge de l’Onde in Saint-Saphorin and Gault & Millau Swiss Sommelier of the year 2015

... take part in the Caves Ouvertes Vaudoises (wine cellar open days) 14 and 15 May

... know everything about the cheeses in the Pays-d’Enhaut

— I choose a selection from the 300 open cellars to learn about the incredible variety and quality of wines and produce from the Vaud region. With my passport costing CHF20, I jump in and out off the free shuttle buses leaving from the main stations to go to the wine tasting sessions, a glass in hand.

With the ‘vias du fromage’ app, I go in search of cheese makers who produce Gruyère AOP and L’Étivaz AOP cheeses. In the Gruyère Paysd’Enhaut regional natural park, I choose one of the excursions, which take from one to four hours to complete, and set off in search of the secrets of cheese production, and the best parts of the region.

Culture, like the air that we breathe — It would seem culture is as necessary to us as the air that we breathe! And as air is free, Lausanne makes a point of organising free events throughout the year, especially in the summer when there are more visitors in town. Now a major festival, Label Suisse offers the audience a glimpse, every two years, of the incredible vitality of the Swiss music scene. A varied menu Lausanne Estivale 2016 – 40th edition Mid June – mid September Throughout the summer, Lausanne Estivale showcases a vast menu of 450 activities – mostly open air – for all tastes and all ages. Let the city work its charm as you discover some of the 40 show locations. www.lausanne/lausanneestivale.ch An exotic cocktail 45th Festival de la Cité Lausanne 5 – 10 July For six days the Festival shakes up a veritable cocktail of creativity in the City's historic quarter and numerous other locations around town. It will get you interested in the latest artistic trends, some of which come from afar. www.festivalcite.ch

Interview Marc Ridet

An interview with Label Suisse music programmer Marc Ridet, founder in 1985 of the Dolce Vita, a legendary stage showcasing counterculture rock, hip-hop and electronic music. He is also director of a foundation that supports young musicians. How do you describe Label Suisse? Its aim is to reveal unexpected talent in all music genres. The festival was set up in 2004 by Swiss Radio, which had realised that the wonderful musical energy in Switzerland was not sufficiently known and even less recognised. Which audiences does Label Suisse cater to? All audiences, and this is precisely our creed and our strength! From classical to heavy metal, to sound systems, rock, hip-hop and choral music – we provide a veritable bouquet of the latest trends and local talent.

Agenda The most popular concerts take place outside and the most targeted in concert halls, but above all we want the public to mix it up and explore. This is why there is a good flow of people between the six locations, with the Place de l’Europe at the centre of the event.

We provide a veritable bouquet of the latest trends and local talent.

What is on the bill at Label Suisse in 2016 ? The 2016 edition will be the third since the Label Suisse association took over from the Radio. To give an idea of the programme's variety, we are introducing Bastian Baker, a real headline act for young people, alongside Andreas Schaerer, whose electronic jazz captivates a more informed audience. As an unmissable biennial festival of live Swiss music, Label Suisse has become the meeting place of all musical encounters and attracts an enormous audience. It's a great representation of Switzerland's musical scene of today!

01 Tulip Festival Morges

April to mid-May Morges’ lakeside is an explosion of colour when spring arrives and 150,000 tulips bloom in the Parc de l’Indépendance. This is repeated in the summer, when an abundance of dahlias make up a colourful carpet on the esplanade. In between these two periods, Irises are celebrated at the Château de Vuillerens. www.morges-tourisme.ch 02 34th Cully Jazz Festival Cully 8 to 16 April The smallest of the great jazz festivals takes place every year at the onset of spring, attracting musicians who have come from the four corners of the earth. Astonishing musical encounters take place all over the pretty Medieval village of Cully, including in its famous wine cellars. www.cullyjazz.ch 03 Visions du Réel (documentary film festival) Nyon 15 to 23 April With a cutting edge film list, meetings with directors from far away and debates on the big topics of society, Visions du Réel is so much more than your ordinary documentary film festival. For a week, Nyon lives to the rhythm of faraway realities. www.visionsdureel.ch
