o16 The canton of Vaud in a video

This year we are setting off on an adventure along the roads of the Grand Tour of Switzerland. Following in the footsteps of the famous people who have so appreciated the region, we explore the streets of Morges during a romantic weekend; we visit pastures that bring cheeses to our plate and other delicacies to delight our taste buds; we discover Bonvillars’ ‘black gold’, the famous truffles that continue to provide the town with its X factor. In Lausanne, our eyes wonder at the city’s artistic creations and architecture. And let’s not forget to have a musical break in Nyon.

Contemporary art and heritage ArtEdifices 2015

The beginning of a legendary journey Grand Tour of Switzerland The Grand Tour of Switzerland can only be described as a legendary road trip. Its route spans 1,600km among the country’s most beautiful scenery and will immerse you in the culture of the four linguistic regions, enable you to drive next to 22 lakes and traverse five mountain passes in the Alps and the Jura mountains; it will also lead you to ten UNESCO world heritage sites. The open road awaits.

From May-September 2015, the art of 40 celebrated artists adorns the churches and chapels of the Gros-de-Vaud region. Organised by Assens’ cultural centre and Echallens Regional Tourism this fascinating dialogue between contemporary and ancient art can be discovered along art trails that follow several paths. www.echallens-tourisme.ch

A new approach to good-living Royal Savoy Lausanne – opens June 2015 This palatial Art Nouveau five-star hotel has re-invented itself with an added contemporary feel. Previous guests at this century-old establishment have included royalty; now the revamped Royal Savoy is to combine luxury with the modern day lifestyle. The comfort of a Lobby Lounge, panoramic Sky Terrace, vast spa and wellness centre will be added to the traditions and service of this iconic accommodation. www.royal-savoy.ch

Infinite contrasts A cycling tour around Lake Geneva This cycling tour that wraps around Lake Geneva features sunny hills with vineyards as far as the eye can see on the Swiss side and on the French side the Alps dipping their feet in the lake. The variety of the 180km-long circuit is a favourite with cyclists as it circumnavigates the largest natural alpine lake, winds through lush countryside, flanks the terraced Lavaux vineyards and passes the Château de Chillon, completing the loop on the French side of the lake via the narrow roads of the Haute Savoie region.

“When we drove along the Marchairuz Pass, we immediately felt this sense of calm you feel in the Jura. We took advantage of the relaxing ambiance to go for a lovely walk with, as a backdrop, a striking view of the Mont Blanc.”

“Here we had such a wonderful swim! Even though the Lac de Joux freezes in winter, the water was a pleasant 24°C that day.”

“To add a little culture to our trip, we visited the splendid Romainmôtier abbey, built by monks from Cluny. After dropping off Julia for a wellness break at the famous Yverdon-les-Bains thermal baths, my visit to the Maison d’Ailleurs museum was a fascinating journey through science fiction.”

“We briefly skirted the cantons of Neuchâtel and Fribourg before joining the road leading to Château-d’Œx.”

“One of the things we loved about our trip was that it took us to the heart of Switzerland’s watch making industry, a business of precision that was born to occupy farmers in the Jura during the long winter nights”.

“We loved the Pays-d’Enhaut region, with its cascades of flowers on century-old chalets made of sculpted wood.”

“This is also where they make the magnificent paper cuts (used for collages) and where the mountain pasture cheese called ‘Etivaz AOP’ is made.” 10

“Oskar had been talking about the Montreux Jazz Festival for so long. It was fun walking along the esplanade that so many legendary musicians have taken before us.” 6

“After a few more bends via the Col des Mosses, the medieval treasure of Aigle Castle appeared as we drove down onto the plain. Its Wine and Vine Museum taught us all about the Chasselas, the region’s prized golden grape variety that is the pride of the region and makes wonderful wine. The Grand Tour of Switzerland was set up in 2015 and passes through 13 tourist regions on a route 1,600 km long. For visitors who are more pressed for time or who prefer to get the most out of just one region, there is the option of the more local routes. In the canton of Vaud these comprise three small outings, easily doable in a day, giving you a taste of the Grand Tour.

“Before setting off home, we made the most of Lausanne’s rich cultural attractions, which make it a city that marries tradition and modernity.”

The rural outing This is the most family-friendly trip, taking you from Vullierens Castle to Servion zoo via La Sarraz, Echallens and Moudon. The history outing A trip from medieval Morat to Payerne, passing through the Roman sites of Avenches and Estavayer-le-Lac, this is the most cultural of the side trips.

13

The alpine outing Starting off in Aigle or Château-d’Œx, this is a snapshot of the mountain at its most beautiful.

“On the way back to Geneva airport we stopped off in Nyon, a town that hosts a lot of festivals. Our friends Jules and Nancy are crazy about them and love to come whenever they can. From now on we will come with them!”

Celebrating Bonvillars’ ‘black gold’ — On 31 October 2015 Bonvillars once again hosts the Truffle Market on the occasion of its seventh edition. Vivre interviewed its founder and indefatigable ambassador of truffles, Frank Siffert.

What’s behind this craze people have for truffles? It’s a way for everyone to buy in to a dream, because luxury makes us dream! Truffles are also, by definition, authentic regional products: chalky soil and a temperate climate is all they need to grow. Each truffle has its own personality and there are 62 listed varieties, 35 of which are in Europe. Bear in mind, though, that summer truffles are very different to winter varieties. Yet an interest in truffles in Switzerland is something fairly recent… It’s true, we didn’t have a king to sing its praises or writers to boast its aphrodisiac qualities, but we are making up for lost time. In the luxury sector Switzerland has watchmaking, lace from Saint-Gallen and now the truffle.

How do you explain the success of Bonvillars’ Truffle Market? We were as surprised as anyone! We expected 400 people but now more than 5,000 attend each year. People like being in close contact with the truffles, which always hold an element of mystery. A word of warning about these fungi though: truffles themselves can never be fake, but we like to point out that there are rip-off products derived from truffle flavouring – these represent 90% of the market and have never even been in contact with a truffle in their life!

Treat yourself to a one-day course with Frank, his partner Annie and their dog Lulu to discover edible wild truffles “from extraction to your plate”. info@truffesuisse.ch, T. +41 (0)79 210 75 41 1st Summer Truffle Market, Concise, 11 July 2015 7th Truffle Market, Bonvillars, 31 October 2015

A detour via the vineyards

The beginning of the journey leads to the superb Abbey of Payerne, built around the year 1,000AD by order of Cluny. Its pure lines, polychrome frescoes and exquisitely sounding bells make it an icon of Romanesque architecture.

On the sunny hills that dominate the lakes of Morat and Neuchâtel, pass through wine-growing villages beginning in Salavaux then on to Vully, Constantine, Montagny and Chabrey.

Cluny’s catholic monastic order, founded in 910, was to become the most important religious movement in Europe for 250 years with the creation of more than 1,200 sites. There still exist a dozen in Switzerland of which Payerne is the largest.

+ 5,000 years The Neolithic lakeside town of Gletterens is the only reconstituted prehistoric town in Switzerland and paints a picture of the life of the first farmers on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel some 5,000 years ago.

+ 2,000 years

Go back to the Middle Ages and take a break to enjoy some water sports

Going further back in time and heading towards Corcellesprès-Payerne takes us to Avenches. This ancient Roman site of Aventicum was established at the beginning of the first millennium and is an open-air archaeological museum containing a significant amount of ruins of a temple, a palace, thermal baths, as well as a sanctuary. The famous Avenches amphitheatre hosts prestigious shows throughout the summer.

After the Romans annexed the land that is now Switzerland in 15BC, Aventicum became its political and administrative headquarters and was decreed a ’colony’ a century later by Emperor Vespasian. Avenches celebrates its 2,000 anniversary this year.

Those in search of pure nature might consider pedalling further to La Grande Cariçaie, a lakeside marsh and sizeable nature reserve that attracts migratory birds from all continents.

En route, don’t forget to taste the famous Vully cake www.otvaud.ch/e7

The medieval town of Estavayer-le-Lac with its Chapelle des Dominicaines (chapel) and Château de Chenaux is like a leap back to the 14th century. Estavayer is also a hub for water sports, with its marina and two beaches.

Begin on an alpine plateau looking south to the Dents du Midi peaks, then walk to La Croix pass with its famous and bizarre gypsum pyramids. Seeing these will make your journey worthwhile.

Lausanne – a contemporary city

In the small valley of what was once a river, the Flon quarter has become the heart of young, trendy and energetic Lausanne. Industrial-era buildings nodding to the past are interspersed with audacious architectural designs looking to the future. Theses edifices contain galleries, artists’ workshops, cinemas and boutiques, as well as clubs for night owls like the famous MAD.

— Long time considered the little sister of Swiss cities, Lausanne is now flourishing and has become its most contemporary one. Its secret? A youthful spirit, the presence of universities that provide a nesting ground for start-ups, an intense cultural life and creative artists from all disciplines. 21

VIVRE MAGA ZINE

Interview Chantal Prod’Hom

Is the mudac like other design museums? We approach design in the broadest sense looking at all of its disciplines and we invite contemporary artists to express themselves within this field. They have in common a wish to ask as many questions as they find answers. Basically, we are a sounding board for contemporary creativity.

From sexuality to watchmaking – you like extremes… Yes we go from an exhibition entitled “Nirvana” addressing sexual desire in all its forms from a design point of view, to a theme that is less titillating but no less provocative. From May to September 2015 we are inviting our visitors to discover and question the culture of telling the time throughout the centuries. Watchmaking is Switzerland’s field of expertise and we want to shed light on man’s view of measuring time from the 13th century right up to present day. Expect many surprises.

Rolex Learning Center Architecture paying service to knowledge With its undulating ribbon-like structure that has no beginning or end, the Rolex Learning Center is a library, part of Lausanne’s Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and a symbol of limitless knowledge. This exceptional building was designed by Japanese architects Sanaa, winners of the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s equivalent of the Nobel. It is a spectacular statement for a technological university that now also excels in life sciences. The library stays open until midnight. 22

Since the 90s Lausanne has distinguished itself in the world of contemporary art. A key player in this development is Chantal Prod’Hom, who has directed the Asher Edelman Foundation for Contemporary Art, the Fabrica de Benetton and, since 2002, is at the helm of the mudac (Museum of Design and Contemporary applied arts).

Elysée Museum A lens to the world Founded 30 years ago in Lausanne, the Elysée Museum is one of the most important photography museums in the world. It owes its reputation to quality exhibitions (currently the American William Eggleston until 3 May), prestigious donations (photographic archives of Chaplin), and its credo that an image can be as powerful a weapon as words. On 27 June it is hosting its annual La Nuit des Images (night festival of photography) under the stars.

”Objectif gare 2015” This event from 5 to 14 June is in honour of the future museum complex uniting the three museums of Fine arts, Elysée and mudac, which will be built at Lausanne’s train station. It will be a great opportunity to discover the talent of local contemporary artists.

The walk of the creators A breath of fresh air Creatives working in fashion, jewellery and design breathe life into Lausanne. This walk unites five of their boutiques, taking you on a path that leads through some of the city’s prettiest streets. This is a unique stroll leaving from Grand Pont, leading you up rue de la Mercerie or rue de Bourg to reach the nice shopping arcade at Tunnel.
