KISS ME KATE
ANYTHING GOES
Cole Porter’s 1949 Tony Award-winning KISS ME KATE was one of Broadway’s truly witty musicals. A doubledose battle of the sexes show-within-a-show comedy, as wise and tart as ever. Sam and Bella Spewack’s script incorporates Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’ as
Set sail with Cole Porter’s wonderful, 1934 Tony Award -winning musical comedy ANYTHING GOES. Staged in the midst of the depression this tap-happy, zany classic finds a brassy nightclub singer, a starry-eyed stowaway and Public Enemy No.13 booked on a transatlantic luxury liner bound for romance and hilarity.
A musical version of ‘Shrew’ is going through the agonies of an out-of-town try out in Baltimore, rehearsals are complicated by an ongoing feud between the two stars, who were married but are now divorced. Porter’s score, coming late in his career, is one of his best. It’s a hit parade of songs with the show business anthem, Another Op’nin, Another Show, and the sizzling Too Darn Hot, with live band in the pit. Exceptional staging, exceptional fun and one of the musical theatre stage’s enduring triumphs!
