TEAM PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of the Boys Swim & Dive Team at Regis Jesuit High School is to maintain the highest level of excellence in the sport of swimming and diving and in all aspects of life. Our goal is to be the best team in the state of Colorado and to be among the best teams in the country. To achieve this goal, we aspire to maintain the following objectives: 1. Focus on academics as the top priority. 2. Involve as many students as possible in a fun, safe, challenging and rewarding experience. 3. Have every swimmer and diver achieve lifetime best performances every season. 4. Keep hard work, mastery of fundamentals and selfless attitudes as the trademarks of the program. 5. Make every effort to secure college scholarships for senior swimmers and divers. 6. Following the Jesuit tradition, we look to provide an atmosphere where a young man can be challenged physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. Swimmers and divers are encouraged to take part in a variety of pursuits. 7. Model attitudes of confidence and avoid attitudes and displays of cockiness. 8. Swim and dive at the highest level of competition possible as designated by CHSAA classification guidelines. 9. Maintain a program free of drugs and alcohol. Swimming and diving are a privilege and using these substances will result in losing that privilege.

The Extra Degree

212°

At 211, water is hot. At 212, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. The one extra degree makes the difference.

WHAT WE MUST DO TO WIN In The Water

In School

1. Make winning touchouts a habit. 2. Develop habits in practice which will not allow for disqualifications. 3. Always swim smart races. Know yourself, your race and your competition. 4. Master the fundamentals of the sport of swimming: starts, strokes, turns and finishes.

At Practice 1. Be where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be there, ready to do what is supposed to be done. 2. Don't cut corners. Do all the yardage on all of the sets. Use the pace clock correctly. Go hard when you are told to go hard, easy when you are to go easy. Be honest. No cheating. 3. Maintain the confidence that Regis Jesuit swimmers and divers have worked harder and are better prepared than the competition. 4. Use the other swimmers and divers on the team. Train hard against them. Learn by watching what they do. 5. Take sit-ups, stretching and lifting weights seriously.

1. Remember that you are a member of the Regis Jesuit Swim & Dive team. You are representing your school and the proud tradition of Regis Jesuit swimmers and divers who came before you. Act like it! 2. If you are at a Regis Jesuit meet and you choose to wear a cap, it is a Regis Jesuit cap. Your suit is a Regis Jesuit suit, your shirt a Regis Jesuit shirt. Remember who you are and why you are there. 3. Your place is with the team. Others will be supporting you and you need to support them. Your place is NOT in the stands. 4. If our team is swimming or diving, you need to be there. A JV swimmer or diver is expected to show up and cheer for the State Meet. Likewise, every state qualifier is expected to be cheering loudly at the A and B league meets.

6

In General 1. We must DOMINATE our opponent physically and mentally. 2. We must retain poise in the face of a bad break. 3. We must be in better shape than our opponents. 4. We must have a burning desire to win within the rules of the sport. 5. When we walk into a pool, EXPECT to win and then do what it takes.

Guidelines & Expectations

At Meets

6

1. After morning practice, comb your hair and be on time for class. 2. Your first priority at Regis Jesuit is to get good grades. Remember that poor grades will keep you out of swimming and diving and out of good colleges. 3. Hold yourself accountable and expect to be held to the highest standards of accountability. 4. Do not sleep in class.

1. Every swimmer or diver is expected to contribute to the betterment of the team. 2. Any outside competition which affects the Regis Jesuit swim team, i.e. practices or meets, must first be cleared with the Regis Jesuit coaches. 3. Swimmers or divers may be removed from the team for failing to follow team rules or conduct detrimental to the welfare of the team. 4. If a swimmer or diver has any concerns which affects his status on the team, he should open a line of communication with any member of the coaching staff with whom he can relate this difficulty. Should a swimmer or diver decide to remove himself from the team, he should relay this directly to the head coach.

*In order to qualify for State under the 6 dive standard, the diver must meet the qualifying standard two times during the season. To qualify under the 11 dive standard, the diver must meet the qualifying standard only once during the season. **Each year, the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) publishes individual event and relay qualifying times for both “automatic” and “consideration” designations. The “automatic” standard is the 80th place time averaged over the past three years. The “consideration” standard is the top 150th place time averaged over the past three years. When a swimmer achieves the automatic qualifying time in a regularly scheduled interscholastic meet (up to and including State meet performances), he is an “Automatic All-American.” At the end of the qualifying year, only the top 100 swimmers from the combined automatic and consideration lists are designated as “All-American.” Those achieving the consideration time but not finishing in the top 100 receive the designation “All-American Consideration.” A swimmer may be listed in as many events as his times qualify. Relay teams are limited to 4 swimmers only and only 1 relay team per event per school may qualify. Times achieved at high altitudes are adjusted downward by NISCA to insure equitable comparison with those times achieved at sea-level. High altitude adjustments for the Denver area are 1.2 for 200 yards and 5.0 for 500 yards.

June Alec Scott '11, Clark Smith '13 and Hennessey Stuart '14 qualified to compete in the 2016 Olympic Swim Trials. Stuart finaled and placed eighth in 200 back and Smith placed sixth in 200 free which earned him a place on the 2016 Olympic swim team roster for the 4 x 200 free relay. August Clark Smith '13 earned a gold medal as part of the the 4 x 200 free relay at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

2017

March Regis Jesuit took first place at the Dick Rush Coaches Invite swim meet at VMAC. Clark Smith '13 set NCAA, American and U.S. Open records while winning the 500 free at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Two days later, he won the 1650 in NCAA and American record time. May Twenty-seven swimmers and two divers qualified and competed at the 5A State Championships held at VMAC. The team came in second for the third year in a row with 253 points. All-American swims were achieved by Ty Coen '18 (100 fly and 100 back), Will Goodwin '19 (200 IM) and Elijah Warren '18 (100 breast) as well as in the 200 medley relay (Goodwin, Coen, Warren and Alex Strepman '17). Their time of 1:31.35 set a new team record. The 400 free relay of Coen, TJ Miller '18, Sam Jones '18, and Warren also achieved an All-American time.

2018

March Regis Jesuit took first place at the Dick Rush Coaches Invite swim meet at VMAC for the second year in a row. April Participating in the Mustang Invite, Regis earned fourteen state qualifying times allowing more swimmers to taper for state instead of leagues. May (Summary excerpt from Courtney Oakes, Aurora Sentinel and Sentinel Colorado). A season after Regis Jesuit finished 105 points behind Fossil Ridge, the Raiders topped the SaberCats by

4.5 points in a battle of programs that have developed the utmost respect for each other over the last handful of seasons. Elijah Warren '18 won individual state championships in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and swam the breaststroke leg on the meet-opening win in the 200 medley relay. Regis Jesuit was projected to finish second to Fossil Ridge for a fourth straight season according to PrepSwimCo. com's rankings based on the pre-meet psych sheets, which showed a 57-point margin between the teams. That margin tightened up to 20 following an outstanding prelim session for the Raiders, which ended with what turned out to be a key result when Will Kerscher '20 touched out Hinkley's Nathan Leigh in a 200 IM swim-off for the last spot in the championship finals. That result meant at least two more points going into the championship finals and the team counted on every one of those points. The Raiders opened the championship finals with an energizing performance in the 200 medley relay, which saw a great leadoff backstroke turned in by Ty Coen '18 — who was cleared only days earlier to return to the pool following a broken hand he suffered in practice — followed by Warren's breaststroke, Jackson Gurley '20 swam fly and Will Goodwin '19 swam the fastest 50 free relay split of the meet with a 20.18. That finish gave Regis Jesuit an Automatic All-American time of 1 minute, 30.52 seconds, enough to set the Colorado and 5A state meet record by just 0.01 of a second. Cherry Creek clocked a 1:30.53 in 2013. Goodwin then turned in a runnerup finish behind Danny Kovac of Fossil Ridge in the 200 IM in an All-American time and Warren, who was seeded second behind Mountain Range's Lane Austin in the 50 freestyle coming in, captured his second career state championship with a time of 20.68 seconds. Diver Quinn Henninger '21 was runner-up behind three-time state champion Octavio Lucero of Bear Creek in the diving competition and helped Regis Jesuit's cause. The team trailed by just six points after six events. Coen turned in a career-best individual performance with his second-place finish in the 100 backstroke behind Columbine's Gavin Olson then Warren and Goodwin went 1-2 in the breaststroke — with All-American times of 55.01 and 55.80 seconds, respectively — to make it just a 1.5-point spread for Fossil Ridge with one event left. The SaberCats were easily the No. 1 seed in the event after prelims with a nearly four-second cushion over the Raiders, but Coen led off, Elliot Steinberg '18 pushed Regis Jesuit out to a lead and Goodwin added to it before Warren jumped in to finish. Fossil Ridge's Kovac closed near the end but couldn't catch the Raiders' star at the end and the Raiders finished in an All-American time. All told, the Raiders won four events and achieved seven All-American performances. It was their 22nd team state championship. Elijah Warren '18 was named Colorado Swimmer of the Year.

REGIS JESUIT ALL-AMERICANS What is an All-American Swimmer? Each year, the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) publishes individual event and relay qualifying times for both “automatic” and “consideration” designations. The “automatic” standard is the 80th place time averaged over the past three years. The “consideration” standard is the top 150th place time averaged over the past three years. When a swimmer achieves the automatic qualifying time in a regularly scheduled interscholastic meet (up to and including State Meet performances), he is an “Automatic All-American.” At the end of the qualifying year, only the top 100 swimmers from the combined automatic and consideration lists are designated as “All-American." Those achieving the consideration time but not finishing in the top 100 receive the designation “All-American Consideration." A swimmer may be listed in as many events as his times qualify. Relay teams are limited to four swimmers only and only one relay team per event per school may qualify. Times achieved at high altitudes are adjusted downward by NISCA to ensure equitable comparison with those times achieved at sea level.
