Li Chen, Sun 2016 - 2021

Li-Chen, Sun Bachelor of Architecture, Tamkang University

I was born in 1998 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and I studied Architecture Design in Tamkang University. During these five years I attended internships in HOY Architects and ITRI to explore different kind of architectural jobs. In order to broaden horizons, I also joined a landscape studio held by Bauhaus University in Germany. It was the first time I realized that to tell stories of land, time and season is such a beautiful process. Besides enhancing my architectural knowledge and ability as well as being a great member in firm, I also worked as a baking teacher and type foundry assistant because I am really into baking and old printing products.

01

I always look for new experiences that allow my professional and personal growth. I enjoy traveling and meeting new people because getting along with different people always bring me inspirations and help improve my organization ability. I am also a fan of drawing. I run my own portrait painting studio because I enjoy the moment when my customers see themselves become unique characters. The smile on their face when they see their pets become art pieces is the most cheerful gift. For me, drawing as well as architecture design are not just career choices, they are precious and meaningful. Up about future outlook, I would love to involve in landscape architecture and architecture design, and become an architect in next life stage.

BEYOND THE BORDER 2020-2021, Individual graduation project The symbiosis between Chenghuang Temple and Vendor Hsinchu, Taiwan Instructor/ Chia-Ping Lin

Hsinchu Chenghuang Temple has always been a cultural and spiritual spot for citizens. Food and faith explode in this area, presenting an excellent symbiotic relationship. The vendor's business runs directly in front of the temple, even next to the incense burner. Tables and chairs were set up on the side and hid Chenghuang Temple among the crowded vendors. The green path could lead people to explore this field. I also created a module for vendors which allow parade and religious activities to happen in the frontcourt of the temple and set several kinds of transparent shopping form to let people reach the temple easier. During the annual parade, people could gather on Temple court to enjoy food, traditional craft, and show. 03

The dining table is next to the incense burner at the border between the market and temple, and people are waiting for their food line straight into the temple. Pilgrims bring their offerings to the Gods. Waiting for the Gods to feast is also the time for the pilgrims to eat at the vendors.

Entrances to temple

The central shopping mall comprises two buildings, with a roof built in the middle to form an internal street. It was a shopping mall that used to sell New Year's goods, fabrics, and clothing in the early days. The central shopping mall is a transitional space between the temple, vendors, and the central market.

The symbiosis of temple and vendor is composed of seating, waiting, and dining spaces.

When the Karma Parade begins, D

many pilgrims and residents will

flock to the frontcourt of the Chenghuang Temple. The vendors would move to the plaza, creating more space for the temple and the show stage. During the celebration, people watch traditional drama, eat snacks, light up incense, and

INNER TIME 2019-2020, Individual project Four Poems of Architectural Notation New Taipei City, Taiwan Instructor/ Hideki Hirahara(平原英樹)

How can many forms of inner space be combined? Four poems are about the adventure of inner world exploration. Try to divide one day into four periods and explore different times and situations via light and shadow, planting, sound, airflow, water, and natural elements. These four poems express my theory of sensuous spaces and the initial intention of shelter. Following the four projects and exploration step by step, people might eventually reach their inner peace.

Reflection The Poem of Reflection: A community library, where people can feel the natural elements such as breeze, drizzle, fog, plants, ripple sparkling while reading indoors, which are reflected into the architectural space.

Aegis The Poem of Shimmer: A shop between light and shadow. From morning to evening, sunlight will visit each chamber for two hours in turn. People identify the time when they chase the shimmer.

Morning Rites The Poem of Rite: A morning ritual process consists of a cup of steaming tea, showering, opening a curtain, stretching. In this hotel, people walked downstairs along with the sunlight chimney, bathed in the light of the morning ceremony, and experienced their first “morning rites.”

Laundryside The Poem of Uselessness: What is the value of "uselessness"? Waiting forty minutes for the laundry to be done, people without phones wander in the laundry room. Watering the flowers, chatting, drying clothes, listening to the sound of the dryer.

PROTOZONE The Deconstruction of Essence— Taipei Vertical Cemetery 2020, Fourth grade individual project Taipei, Taiwan Instructor/ Ying-Chang Yu 110388@mail.tku.edu.tw

This project appeals to the essence of the physical world. I used nine abstract drawings and six sculptures as the start of design to explore the combination behind the lines, sounds, colors, and the possibility of transforming them into space. The suspended glass panels, steel floor slabs, and mirror texture give the space a sense of unlimited expansion and integration with nature. The cemetery should not be on the edge of the city. In contrast, the vertical cemetery will become a necessity of a town. Through private memorial space and church worship space, Protozone is embedded in the city and plays a spiritual oasis role for urban residents.

OTHER WORKS I was responsible for coordinator and leader both in Red Castle research and bamboo pavilion workshop. For example, we cooperated from structural analysis, design to construction, and finally built a highly rated bamboo pavilion in the first year of university, which also left good memories for the team members and visitors.
