Contents The local temples in Taiwan have often closely connected with local food culture. However, people still get surprised when they walk into the Hsinchu Chenghuang Temple:

The stalls in front of the temple do business directly on the temple court, and even tables and chairs were set up next to the incense burner, hiding the Temple among the crowded vendors. The crowds of pilgrims and the foodie feasting on food seeking back and forth. Vendors and faith gather in front of the temple court, presenting a wonderful symbiotic relationship.

The clue of Hsinchu

“Find the biggist temple and the biggist market on Zhongshan Road, and get to know these two places; in this way, you can already know half of the town.” (Wang Hao Yi, 2015)

I am a native of Hsinchu, but I am also not a qualified one. Using the way above to test my understanding of my hometown, I found that I knew very little about this land, so I decided to start a journey to re-understand Hsinchu.

First, walk on Zhongshan Road in Hsinchu, which is also a main road starting from the city government. Zhongshan Rd. found!

The second step is to find the biggist market on Zhongshan Road. The central market, food vendors and the central shopping mall, which are closely related to daily food and daily life to the residents here.

The memory of Hsinchu Chenghuang

It turned out that the Chenghuang Temple was hidden in the layers of the market. And after visiting it, i found it’s such a complicated and messy place around. So I began to think, what made the Chenghuang Temple today?

People who came from other cities to enjoy food here seldom paid attention to the central shopping mall and Chenghuang culture. Everyone is always in a hurry and hungry; there is no spare time for such an ancient and gentle place.

The relationship between Chenghuang Temple and Zhuqian City

/1834/ Late Qing Dynasty

Next to the temple is the Tamsui Government Office. Stalls from various places come to the temple to set up and provide meals to nearby public officials and pilgrims. Food stalls has been a long history in Han culture, but at this time, it is still mainly in the form of fair.

/1905/ Japanese occupation

Food stalls are still thriving, with a schedule of opening at sunrise and closing at sunset, but they have not yet developed into steady stalls. After the Japanese came to Taiwan, they noticed the deeply rooted culture of stalls and decided to control the scale of it. Although it is allowed to set up stalls in private spaces, it is restricted to doing business within a specific time and area. Such a controlling policy has made the grocery cart business arise.

/1951/ Restoration

The vendors set up their own enclosures when the temple has no time to control them. After the enclosure has been formed, the temple reached an agreement with them. The content includes: In the case of major festivals in the Cheng-huang Temple, the temple can ask the stalls to move out if necessary, and stalls should also provide voluntary assistance. It forms a major feature of Hsinchu today.

/2020/ Now

Nowadays, the surrounding area of Cheng-huang Temple has become a well-known food court. Many people even come to worship and dine on weekends. The neighboring Central Market has also become an important place for Hsinchu citizens to buy groceries. In Ghost month, the parade will depart from the Cheng-huang Temple as the center place, and walk within a radius of one kilometer. The surrounding neighborhoods are fully engaged in Hsinchu’s most grand religious activity. The Hsinchu Cheng-huang Temple can be said to be the heart of Hsinchu. It pushes faith and market culture to the surroundings and injects the freshest energy into the oldest Hsinchu.

The temple is surrounded by a circle of vendors and shops, including the temple entrance and stage. Vendors selling food, clothing and beauty salon sevice. The square often gathers in pilgrims during the day and crowds of citizens visiting food vendors at night.

Although the temple currently has no exclusive entrance, this way of first contacting the market also integrates the symbiosis system of the city and the temple, which has become a major feature of the Chenghuang Temple.

The central shopping mall is mainly composed of two buildings, with a roof built in the middle to form an internal street. A shopping mall that used to be a street for New Year's goods. Hsinchu was famous for selling fabrics and clothing in the early days. The central shopping mall acts as a transitional space between temple vendors and the central market.

People who walk into the Hsinchu City God Temple will be surprised: The vendors business run directly on the temple, even next to the Tiangong insense burner, Tables and chairs were set up on the side, which hide the Chenghuang Temple among the crowded vendors. The crowds of worship and the foodie feasting on this place, back and forth.Food and faith explode at this area , yet they’re presenting a wonderful symbiotic relationship.

This kind of chaotic life experience is not a mistake, it is more likely a valuable experience. Although it is full of vitality, it’s now facing the problem of being forgotten by the new generation of citizens because of isolation. It needs to be sorted out, planned, and reappeared , and then represent to the citizecs’ eyes.
