Supplemental is an organization that helps people become better informed and gain better health supplement choices. It gives people a guide to understand supplement information through its offers. Its offer includes an app that lets people choose better supplements, and helps them to connect their doctors to decide what supplements they need or don’t need in their diet.

FDA regulates dietary supplements under another set of regulations than those covering ‘conventional’ foods and drug products. —Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. It is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), and veterinary products.

asked myself why these products are available on the market for everyone without prescriptions, and wondered if they have harmful ingredients. I also wondered if they have any side effects. So, I was concerned about my husband and everyone I love who uses dietary supplements. I wanted to make a difference and give my help, so I chose dietary supplements as a topic for my thesis project, Supplemental.

People do not educate themselves about supplements before they take them. This is because dietary supplements are regulated by the FDA as food and not as drugs. And, there are so many vitamins and supplements on the market that they appear very legitimate which leads people to make their choices based on their beliefs rather than on proven medical facts. Also, the labeling and marketing of supplements is often misleading.

for dietary supplements. According to the FDA, there are more than 29,000 different supplements on the market today. And, according to the most recent government figures, Americans spend more than $11 billion annually on vitamins, minerals, herbs/botanicals, sports supplements, meal supplements, and weight loss products, according to the most recent government figures. Also, the FDA stated that in 2013, researchers published a report in which they sampled and analyzed 44 herbal supplements. The supplements were sold and labeled as containing single herbs. Using DNA bar coding analysis, less than half the supplements (48%) contained any of the herbs listed on the label.

unknown side effects or interactions with other drugs, foods, or supplements, they are not likely to be discovered as quickly as those of new prescription drugs on the market. According to the American Cancer Society, many people assume that dietary supplements are always safe to take along with prescription drugs. This is not true. For example, certain botanicals can block or speed up the body’s absorption of some prescription drugs. This can cause the person to have too much or too little of the prescribed drug in their bloodstream. Most drug companies and producers of herbal supplements do not research possible drug interactions.

The final design was a booklet that represents the questions. It contains 50 to 80 questions and images and answers for six questions that I felt were important. Moreover, the cover has a statement that describes my topic.

the world. Also, the elements had to be under six categories which are environmental impact, economic impact, political impact, cultural impact, personal impact and other additional camps related to my topic. This step was written on a giant sheet of paper. The topic name was in the center and the categories were around it. In the end, I found connections between elements and drew lines between them. Every element was connected with at least one other element. And, I wrote the new ideas from those connections under the lines. This lab helped me clarify the complex issues in my topic. The second step in this lab was designing 18 cards. They presented the important connections that came from the giant sheet of paper. The goal of this lab was to engage the viewers and create meaning with thoughtful connections between the images and the words.

Vitamins and supplements are extracted from strange ingredients and derivatives which could harm people.
Unhealthy
Some chemical compounds are not natural and could be unhealthy for people.
Graduated
Some scientific organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration and The Federal Trade Commission protect the vitamins and supplements products, but some of those products are graduated without passing through these organizations.
Control
In order to make people trust companies that provide vitamins and supplements, we should have organizations that monitor those companies.
Gap
The inability to get important vitamins and the decrease in the vitamins in the natural of foods, led people to start taking vitamins and supplements in order to strengthen their bodies by other vitamins sources. The problem is this vitamins could be fake or unhealthy.
Estimate
Fertilizers and pesticide reduce the value of the nutrients in the natural sources.
Thoughts
People think of vitamins and supplements as a better way to get nutrients.
Motivation
The advertising of the vitamins and supplements products motivate people to pay for it and try it.
Essentials
The most important in keeping people healthy is providing all nutrients for them.
Untrustworthy
Some vitamins and supplements are not exposed to the testing which make them dangerous source to humans.
Quantity
Many symptoms such as nausea, stomach cramps, hair loss, gastrointestinal upset, fatigue, mild nerve damage, blurred vision, and dizziness come from taking large amounts of vitamins and supplements.
Money
Some vitamins and supplements are just a waste of money and are harmful to human.
Erroneous
Sharing experiences helps people decrease the health problem.
Neglect
People don’t have enough knowledge about taking those vitamins and supplements and they don’t have enough awareness about it.
Duties
People should be conscious about what they take, and also they should be careful with the amount they consume.
Renown
Vitamins and supplements have a big reputation which might not be true.

The important factors that led to dietary supplements problem are: Research It is hard to find reliable sources in the internet to understand and know information about dietary supplements. Also, some people don’t want to spend long time in reading about supplements. Dangerous Some dietary supplements are harmful because they might have some harmful ingredients or it could interact with another medicine. Availability The abundant of dietary supplements in the market without regulation and without prescriptions motivates people to take them. Public Expectation People think supplements are important for them, or if they don’t benefit them, they won’t harm. Label Information The information in the supplement labels is not accurate and sometime it is false or less than the amount of ingredients that listed in the labels.

secondary research. Many people think that ingredients labeled as natural will tend to be good for them. An abundance of any product in the stores often makes people trust them and consider using them. People have many incorrect assumptions about supplements. They think good nutrition comes mainly from supplements. Even when the supplement isn’t having an effect, some people believe they are doing the right thing if they take supplements. Over all, the risks of taking supplements in combination with other prescription and over the counter drugs are largely unknown. Many people take supplements without prescriptions; thus adverse reactions to supplements are often unknown. Supplement companies target their marketing toward people’s health concerns and often take advantage of their weaknesses. The lack of supplement regulation leads to misleading labels. People assume they will not have adverse reactions from supplements even when they hear other experiences about side effects. When taking supplements, people want to see advantages without considering long term reactions. Some people get the reverse of what they need from supplements. Higher priced supplements make people believe they are very good for them. Many consumers are uninformed about dangers from supplements and their ingredients. Many people will readily and easily believe any given information.

ments on a daily basis for their life styles. From my primary and secondary research, I found that most people who take supplements are 30 years old and up. Also, I realized that my audience was too specific and there are different kinds of people who could be hurt by dietary supplements. So, I shifted my audience to be middle-aged adults who tend to take more supplements and are compensating for getting older. They are more educated, have money to spend on health and wellness, and increasingly likely to have health problems.

the concept of the name with the logo design.
Why did I revise the name? The Truth Behind Dietary Supplements is a long name and has a big concept behind it. It might not give people the accurate function of the organization. So, I revised it to be Supplemental Ingredients, which means additional information. I wanted to give people additional information about supplements, so they would be better informed. Then, I searched for a shorter name and finally I called Supplemental. I did many explorations for the logo related this idea. Then, I created a logo that interprets this meaning.

I created a marketing campaign to convince people about what the real issue is. I picked four dangerous ingredients that could be in some supplement products and I literally show them in pictures to make it clear.

There are some materials that people can take with them at the booths such as postcards and pamphlets to encourage them to ask doctors before taking supplements and encourage them to be a member of Supplemental. The membership includes advantages such as unlimited access to the app, a free doctor visit to gain expert support and on-site advice. Also, some swag will be given, such as a pill organizer, hand sanitizer, T-shirt and water bottle. Moreover, Supplemental pamphlets attract people’s attention to the supplement issue. People can find them at the information booth and doctors’ offices. The pamphlet has information about the Supplemental website and Supplemental app.

User Responses
I informally tested my app
Some of the significant feedback I received from my testing was that I

needed to add more information about the supplement function in the body

and what it interacts with. Also, they advised me to add a map to show

where people can buy a specific kind of supplement. They encouraged me to add a reminder for people not to forget their supplement especially when I’m dealing with middle-aged or older adults who tend to forget their medications and supplements because they are getting older. Some users recommended remove the “Share” option from the app and the website because it would harm people if they made a mistake and shared some information about what supplement they take. I listened to their feedback and I worked hard to get what they wanted in the app because they would be my future customers who use the app.

My users have responded in a way that gives me satisfaction. Most asked

gave me positive thoughts and encouragement for my design, the app concept and function. The following pages show their responses.
Some quotes that I got

what restrictions or regulations or if there is any kind of quality control. Then, I would know as much about it as possible. This setting up a profile and the way that you have the search. Everything I want to cover, you did. I think it is an excellent app to have.” —Amely Blaton, 57 years old
“ It is interesting. The way I can send a summary for a doctor is very helpful. Also, the design is very good, I think it is kind of contemporary mobile design which usually is very flat.” —Austin Dickson, 35 years old
“ I would use it also because sometimes if I want to buy new supplements and if I go somewhere that carries a lot of them, which one is a good one? Because some of these things are not good like others. So, yes it could be very useful because sometimes I do research at home, away from the store. And this is a very handy feature because I might use it in the store.” —Susan Pasley, 68 years old
“ I would try it because there are so many supplements in the store and this app is better than google. I can google the product and I just get too much information with a lot of different sources. I think that helps simplifying it. It is easy to search and to take a picture or scan and it is easy to read.” —Hana Alunazi , 36 years old

while they are shopping to find information about the supplements. To be aware of what they are consuming and watch their intake. Also, Supplemental in the future could be partnered with a healthcare group or provider such as Medical One Group, Blue Cross and Kaiser. Millions of people who are in those health plans can have Supplemental benefits.
