Design Studio V: Children Resource Center Designing for a Children Resource Center for the ARCASIA Students’ Architectural Design Competition 2010 as a class project. Located at Baridhara Lake Park, beside the Baridhara Lake at Dhaka, Bangladesh, a sustainable approach has been taken to address the playfulness of the children. The concept was developed through colorful building blocks placed randomly on a play mat. Concrete blocks of various functions have been designed just like a play eld ensuring the lake view. The structures were connected via one playful pathway, shaded with tensile structure. One shallow water body has been designed for the kids to enjoy water time without any harm. The library has alcove spaces to allow the kids to enjoy natural light while reading. The audio visual room has checkerboard patterned seating areas to increase interests in playing. The walls have been designed allowing children to paint whatever they want on them. The sand play zone is a proposal to incorporate in the design. Design Studio III: Designing for unique ergonomic requirements (A studio for a man on wheelchair) Designing for a differently able person with wheelchair. The concept originated from the curved lines created by the wheels while moving. The imaginary client is a freedom ď€ ghter who has fought for the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 and lost one leg. The use of uid concrete sheer walls standing upright represents the bold nature of the client. All the furniture used here have tailor made designs according to his personal preference. The site had an existing concrete wall and a large tree which were incorporated in the design.

Design Studio III: Level 2 Term 1 Duration: 4 weeks Site area: 200 sqm Individual project

The whole area of the designed residence is considered as 100% accessible to the wheel chair person. Everything was designed considering the ergonomics of the wheel chair person. Even the high/low window is also operable from a height that can be reached at a seating position. The client can access & control every corner of his residence alone.

There is no sharp corner in the whole design. Every wall and corner has its own uidity. User will experience a smooth stay at this residence

Nature was another major concern for the project. Every existing vegetation was considered as a vital part of the design. At the site whole area can be accessed by wheel chair but more than 50% of the area has a soak able green. It has perforated pavement which is accessible for the wheels and great for the nature.

This project is a proposal by the Public Works Department and Department of Architecture of Bangladesh government. There is one existing mosque inside the site. A proposal of nurse dormitory comes along with the future extension of the design phase 2. The linear wings of the hospital, respecting the site, has been designed to enable cross ventilation inside the rooms. Almost every space has either a beautiful green or water body view. The internal green courtyard is used as an invisible barrier from the outpatient zones to the stay in areas to ensure privacy. Green planter boxes have been introduced to the wards and cabin verandas so that the patients can enjoy the freshness of the plants which may help them recover soon. Ramps have been incorporated in the design to avoid power failure. The wooden vertical louvers have been used to shade the east and west wings from direct heat and sun. The steel connection bridge among the two major building gives a beautiful view of the internal courtyard.

The existing water bodies at the front and back have been developed for recreation purposes dedicated to the hospital users only. The front water body is a semi private facility for out patients and in patients both. The back one is a private area for the patients staying in the hospital and the staffs. Landscape at the water bodies includes steps to enjoy the beautiful water. The cafeteria at the ground oor has outdoor seating area along the water body.

Design Studio VIII: Design Through Housing Quality Indicators Designing a public housing using the Housing quality indicators. The challenge was to incorporate a high density population in a site ensuring all the quality measures for modern life. 75 sqm, 93 sqm and 116 sqm- these 3 types of units are arranged in 3 types of super blocks within the site. Surrounded by a curved water body along the site, a total of 11 super blocks are inter- connected with paves and greens. Vehicular roads run along the periphery only to encourage pedestrian circulation. Natural ventilation and daylight have been ensured in every spaces of each unit. The G+22 mid rise structures have vertical gardens and void spaces within the super blocks connecting each ends together enabling air ow through the buildings. Wind ow, shadow and daylight analysis have been conducted to measure the quality indicators and the results were satisfactory.
