WHEN YOUR STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD IS MORE THAN JUST A BOARD AND PADDLE...

For Breeze Turner it’s not just a hobby, spor t or even exercise. Her paddleboard is the vessel that bridges the gaps between some of her most significant experiences, adventures and memories. It has connected Breeze to people she may never have met other wise, taken her to places she may never have gone and filled her life with happiness she may never have felt. It has been an epiphany of finding out who she really is— and there’s no paddling back now. (Near Speed Boat Beach, Lake Tahoe, California) PHOTO © BREEZE TURNER

HONOR THE JOURNEY AND YOUR TIME ON THE WATER, AND YOU WILL FIND THE PERSON YOU ARE.

ABOVE: Floating Yogis in Urdhva Hastasana

Life is always a work in progress, whether on or off the water. However, taking time to get on the water is one of the most effective ways to assess who we really are or who we wish to become. Being on the water can bring you to the brink and make you consciously delve into the elements of life that mimic water. Realization of balance, stillness, creativity and personal callings. Small epiphanies lead to bigger ones and once you start on that journey it becomes easier to pack up the doubts and fears. It can’t be ignored any longer. It is a healing journey. Honor the journey and your time on the water, and you will discover the person you are. Fuel your passion and move forward. — LUC Y LUCILLE

BREAST HEALTH A Preventive Approach: Part 4 BY SCOTT ES TRADA

WELCOME TO THE LAST in a four-part series on breast health. In the first issue we covered what I see as the major contributor to many women’s health challenges including breast cancer, bringing awareness to estrogen dominance as a quiet but deadly undertone of our modern life, wreaking havoc in the delicate balance of hormones in the glandular system and beyond. We are the first people to inhabit earth while co-existing with more than 80,000 synthetic chemical compounds that have made their way into our food, air, water and, ultimately, our bodies. The estrogen-mimics (or xeno-estrogens) have come at a large cost to our health. In part 2, we covered the specific compounds to focus on removing from our intake (food, water and personal care items), highlighting the origin of the main xeno-estrogens and providing a five-step plan to reduce exposure, with the goal of creating some sense of balance in the transition process. In part 3, we went deeper into an action plan to tip the scales in our favor by adding specific formulas and natural elements to our intake that have a profound ability to restore strength and vitality, create balance, boost immunity and help rid the body of the toxic load. In this final part, we bring it all together, filling in the gaps and creating a “cheat sheet” of sorts that can be cut out, referenced again and again, and shared with friends and family until the information becomes a part of the mind and the choices are automatic. This is empowerment in motion, a new conversation in the realm of women’s health and wellness that I hope goes viral with raised awareness so the commitment is modeled to our young girls, forever changing the world by focusing on the cause of disease as well as the cure. One very important piece of the multilayered state of breast disease or any disease is how 28 Samata I V1N4

one’s mental and emotional states contribute. This is a deep topic that lies at the heart of who we are and how our minds can shape our health, for better and for worse. Like other forms of nourishment, spiritual nourishment is our responsibility, and if we are going to elevate our collective health, the mind, body and soul must be taken into consideration; not just biology, food choices and personal care items. All the dots connect. This is the deepest truth. Letting go of guilt, shame, self-judgment, doubt and all other forms of fear should be pursued with the same passion as improving your food choices. One thing always leads to another. Focus on massive self-acceptance and self-love, watch the revolution that takes place with your level of health and really give the greatest gift to those you love!

Grounding to the Earth “Grounding,” or “earthing,” has been called the oldest medicine or the original medicine—the true nature of our relationship to the planet. When we touch the earth with our bare skin, there is an immediate connection that occurs: The internal stressors that naturally build up in our system are pulled down into the earth and we are simultaneously flooded with the earth’s negative ions; its supply is infinite. As paddlers, we know this connection well when we touch the sand, grass, soil and water! We must remember the importance of touching the earth in some form daily, especially in

the winter months. Stress hormones are lowered as a result of grounding. Coming off air travel, the best thing to do would be to let your bare feet touch the earth to negate jet lag and the effects of being 30,000 feet in the air for a time. The more regularly we are off the earth, the faster we age. Look into grounding technology and the products you can use while sleeping or working at a desk to “ground” you, just by running a copper wire staked into the earth. People can benefit from grounding as well. Walk barefoot as much as you can outside, immerse yourself in the healing waters of this planet, get buried at the beach and truly connect!

The role of your liver in hormone balance Estrogen levels naturally rise as you age. Combine that with estrogenic food sources and all the sources of xeno-estrogens from the many synthetic compounds encountered daily, and you have the perfect storm to add massive stress to your liver. All things must pass through this vital organ to be metabolized. Your body naturally breaks down extra estrogen with what’s called methylation, especially if your diet is rich in a variety of leafy greens, other veggies, superfoods and healthy fats. But consider the many people with no knowledge or awareness of this process, who still feed on highly processed, refined items that are stripped of fiber and minerals and

When we touch the earth with our bare skin, there is an immediate connection that occurs...

loaded with trans-fats or other fatty acids that create congestion in the main organ designed to do so much for us. The body needs help with methylation to undo the congestion and remove the toxic load. This is why juicing is such a powerful way to clean the body and support the liver in its process. You can pack larger amounts of methylating nutrients into juice and drink it faster than you can eat the same amount. Dr. Norman Walker, the grandfather of juicing who created the Norwalk Cold Press in the early 1900s, knew this truth and drank beet juice regularly, as beets are the richest source of methyl-donors of any produce choice. They have a unique ability to excavate the bad estrogens from the liver—not an easy task. Thanks in part to his juicing habits, wise Dr. Walker lived a rich life to the age of 109!

Best Nutrients for Methylation • B6, B6, B12 (best from fermented foods, not supplement form) • Beets, beet juice (betaine) • Goji berries • DMG (dimethylglycine) • MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)

• TMG (trimethylglycine) • DIM (see part 3 of the series for info) • All dark leafy greens, cruciferous veggies and fresh, organic produce All these contain elements rich in hydrogen with a carbon molecule, hence the methyldonor action. All people should take extra care of the liver for longevity, but women who want to support hormone balance and prevent disease should pay special attention to it. When the hormones listed below are at strong levels, you are stacking the odds in your favor to prevent diseases. • Progesterone • Vitamin D • Testosterone • Estriol (estrogen) • Thyroid hormones

Simultaneously, you want the hormones listed below to be at lower levels to maintain a healthy balance and feel great. • Insulin • Cortisol • Estrone (estrogen) • Estrodial (estrogen) When this equation is reversed, the odds are working against your body and a balanced state, and a flood of unwanted symptoms can show up depending on your specific genetics, including migraines, insomnia, acne, weight gain, mood swings and depression (the list goes on). Focus on a life of sound self-care and stack the odds in your favor. Add these tidbits to the good health habits you already practice. Think of these like tools in your shed, build a life of selflove and see the value in each moment.

SIDE TWIST

Beginner To Intermediate BY JULIE ROACH

I

PHOTO: MARK BAIRD

STANDING TALL IN TADASANA (Mountain pose), take a moment with your hands together at heart center.

1

Connect your breath to the beauty that surrounds you. SUP Yoga practice allows us to be in direct harmony with creation. In this side twist (or prayer twist), we honor ourselves and bow to nature.

step 1

Set your feet hips’ width apart at the center of the board. Press down into all four corners of each foot, and set your gaze on the horizon. On an inhale, sweep your arms up toward your ears. Take a micro bend in your elbows and squeeze your shoulder blades toward your heart. Hold that energy, hugging in as your lower belly draws up and toward your spine. Bend your knees and sit back a little, as if a stool were on your board. Pull in your ribs, but keep actively drawing in your shoulder blades and abs. Feel the strength and power right from your core and let your breath flow smoothly. Stay focused for three breaths on three points: Drishti (soft gaze at the horizon), strong abs (try to avoid arching your back), and upper back (shoulders hugging in).

2

step 2

Warming up for side twist: Reach down toward the rail or side of your board. If you can’t reach the rail, putting your fingertips on deck is a great modification. Just keep inching toward the rail, with knees bent and in Chair pose. Notice how your offside knee wants to move forward. Challenge yourself and try to keep your knees lined up and even with each other. Take a moment to feel your outside abs and obliques lengthen. Allow your low back to soften, and to deepen the stretch, bend your knees more and drop your tailbone down. step 3

Full side twist: Keeping your hips low, shift your gaze over your shoulder. Take the bottom elbow to your knee and put both hands together with your top elbow pointed to the sky. Your breath should be smooth as you hug in your abs on the inhale and keep your knees parallel on the exhale. Remember not to sink into the lower shoulder but to lift up, with your heart toward the sky. Take in the beauty that surrounds you! As you release from the pose, bring your hands to the board and bow to your self! You are amazing, unique and one-of-a-kind, connected and balanced between the water and sky! With a smile on your face, roll up to Standing or Mountain pose. Take a moment before repeating on the opposite side. Namaste.

CORE DEVELOPMENT Plank Pass Through BY C ASI RYNKOWSKI

I

PHOTO: RACHEL MCCART Y

LIFE RARELY STANDS STILL and neither should your exercises. Unless you’re trying to avoid red laser beams in the next Mission Impossible movie, get your planks moving! The traditional plank is a full-body isometric contraction, great for developing stability in your core, shoulders, quads and glutes. Ultimately, the plank was designed to get your body ready for movement. Adding leg, torso or arm movement will not only increase the plank difficulty but build more strength, helping you add power to your paddling. Every stroke you take out on the water uses these muscles in unison.

1

If you can hold your plank for 30 seconds, then you are ready for this exercise progression.

step 1

Get down onto your forearms into a plank position with a dumbbell between your arms and place your feet shoulder-width apart. Your feet become an important contact point to help you balance while moving through the passthrough motion.

2

step 2

Pick up the dumbbell and move the weight to your side until your arm is fully extended. Keep your hips square with the ground. This will help keep your abs engaged and your base solid. step 3

Move the weight back to the starting position. step 4

Repeat with the opposite arm. Complete as many reps as you can until failure. 3

goodform WELL-BEING

HOW TO INSPIRE A MORE BAL ANCED EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING BY AAMBER SHADWICK

I

PHOTO: DENMAN BENNETT

INDIVIDUALS WITH RESILIENT EMOTIONAL HEALTH are inherently aware of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. We are conditioned to cope with stress or stressful situations as if it were second nature. With emotionally balanced well-being, our resilience provides us with positive self-efficacy and increased self-esteem. Our buoyancy encourages healthful habitual practices and fruitful relationships. But what happens when our emotional well-being gets disturbed? What happens when we fall short on the wave called life? How do we hearten ourselves to cope and encourage recovered mindset and balance? Good changes can be just as taxing as bad changes, and our bodies respond to both. The way we think, feel and act can be dependent upon our emotional well-being. Therefore, committing to taking good care of ourselves is advantageous. At times it may seem like a challenging task, but it is innately a task of enthusiastic stimulation that is well worth every harmonizing effort. Fittingly, for us water warriors, living a balanced life is essential. Balance (aka samata) empowers optimism, health and longevity. Putting energy forth to seek a balanced and rooted connection between our mind, body and spirit will aid us in the development of our own unique and individual resilience. Accordingly, relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation can be powerful tools in fostering this sense of mindfulness and connection. Further, SUP meditation is a sustainable instrument for welcoming us to live deeper and more organically in the present moment. The water element symbolizes purity, clarity and calm, and it powerfully stimulates us to cleanse our mind. Much like its vastness, water guides us to attain a complete state of freedom. As Anaïs Nin wrote, “I must be a mermaid… I have no fear of depths and great fear of shallow living.” Therefore, fear not. Open your heart and mind to floating meditation. Welcome open space for facing pleasant and unpleasant emotions, thought patterns, cravings and uncertainties without any additional distractions. Just as exercise trains the body, meditation strengthens the mind. Honoring our mental health allows us to acknowledge our full potential, cope with everyday stresses, live productively, and reside more deeply and meaningfully. As a result, offerings of gratitude and gracious contributions are eagerly spread to our friends, families and communities. We create positive ripples into this world every time we offer a kind word, loving action, empowering insight or a smile, because whoever receives it passes it on to someone else, and that person passes it on, and that person passes it on...

If you already hold a meditation practice, continue nurturing and flourishing. For the inexperienced SUP meditator, or for the active SUP individual who wishes to create more of a natural balance in his or her own emotional well-being, go ahead, get on board. Begin today. SUPercharge your mental health. Amber Shadwick, owner of FITSIDE, is a nationally recognized fitness and wellness professional. She has developed the SUP Yoga program at Hilton Head Island’s premiere outfitter, Outside Hilton Head. As a BIC SUP Ambassador she inspires balance and fluidity as the roots for enhanced well-being. OVER 10 YEARS AGO we traveled to south India to explore, surf and windsurf one of the longest coastlines in the world. Beyond the conditions, we were fascinated by the flow in which such a dense and mixed population manages to coexist. Impressed by the kaleidoscope of colors, spices and aromas, as well as the people’s knowledge of yoga and Ayurvedic medicine, we knew that we had to come back.

We start our journey at the famous backwaters: a network of lagoons on the south west coast, parallel to the Arabian Sea, away from the Malabar Coast. We embark on one of these barges and set out on one of the most amazing SUP experiences we could ever imagine. Sinju, our captain, stands at the bow of his kettuvallam (in Malayam, the spoken language of Kerala, kettu means “held by ropes” and vallam means “boat”). The crew, as well as the captain himself, are intrigued by the large bags we hastily stack behind his command post. They have never before seen a stand-up paddleboard and we ourselves have never seen a “houseboat.” Used since the early 20th century to transport rice and spices, the kettuvallam were docked in the ’70s as roads were developed. These barges would surely have become extinct had it not been for the ingenuity of some of the witnesses of the ever-growing tourism in this region, coming up with the idea of turning them into cruise boats. Our houseboat slowly leaves its homeport — in Vembanad lake, south of Kochi, between the tea plantation mountains and the Indian Ocean—just in time, before the tide has entirely receded. It is the middle of May, just before the start of the monsoon

season, and the hottest month of the year. The sky is clear and a thin veil tries in vain to soften the burning heat of the sun. We travel at a very slow pace the entire journey. The houseboats are long, large and heavy, and perfectly adapted to the calm backwaters. For once, I won’t worry about our two daughters, Lou, 7 years old, and Shadé, 16 months: no rough crossings, no seasickness and, most importantly, no fear of them going overboard. Shadé, who has started walking, continues her progress aboard the boat. This cruise is undoubtedly set up to be a smooth one. Tied down along a canal, under a huge mango tree falling under the weight of still unripe fruit, I set Lou out on the water as the sun slowly rises. I am overcome by the peacefulness that surrounds us. On the opposite bank a man bathes his cow while a group of women washes clothes and looks at us indifferently. It’s an Épinal print of an everlasting India, far from that of the country’s vast cities boosted by an economic growth envied by the rest of the world. I realize that what I am seeing this morning has always been here, and remains untouched, almost nothing in our surroundings indicative of this day and age... that is, until Lou makes her way on her stand-up paddleboard. I am not sure whether it is the never-before-seen vehicle or the fact that a blond little girl is standing on top of it, but all eyes turn her way and smiles light up. I jump on my board to join her and go over to meet the crowd of locals going about their business along

Today, with our two little girls at our side, our passion for standup paddling renders our return to Kerala unquestionable. SUP is the ideal way to experience India along its waters and discover its most beautiful waves.

the banks. What an extraordinary way to meet people and not just be a spectator to these scenes of daily life. I rig Manu, my husband, with the baby carrier for Shadé, who is delighted at the prospect of a morning cruise. The four of us paddle along until we run into a temple on the riverbank. A few worshippers welcome us as we approach; one of them, rapidly and with great precision, applies a mark on each of our foreheads. It is a vegetable powder, usually sandalwood, applied as protection on what the Hindus call the “third eye” or “sixth chakra.” It is the eye of self-knowledge, centered right above the eyebrows. After being blessed, we enter the open-air temple, made of several small alcoves. Offerings are placed at the feet of the multiple deities represented there. Today’s ceremony celebrates the first day of the monsoon cycle or rainy season, marking an end to several months of drought. We pray that it will bring fertility to the fields. The worshippers are chanting mantras; the sounds, colors and smells are a journey within the journey. Lou is in awe of Ganesh, the god of intelligence, with his four arms and elephant face. We leave the temple, taking care not to turn our backs on the deities, and slowly go about our way. There is no motive to be hasty here, neither on the water nor on land. Life unravels in such slow motion and with a certain nonchalance that seems to defy the course of time. I notice, as I often do when I travel, that slow pace has much more to reveal than speed. Being so close to the coast and standing over the water like we do on a stand-up board, this cruise becomes a beautiful way to discover the coastline, and miss nothing along the way. The start of the monsoon cycle is also the start of the low tourism season. There are few houseboats left, and many are out of the water for repair and maintenance. Built almost entirely from natural materials, the houseboat has a very low environmental impact—a great advantage, considering the ecological condition of the backwaters, often criticized for pollution (almost all of the local household waste is dumped there). Indeed, the water here is not inviting and is advised against for swimming, although locals here bathe in it daily. I cannot resist the urge to freshen up a bit and Pierre, our photographer, joyfully dives in with his camera housing. Nobody gets sick. This chapter of our trip is smooth and leisurely as we sail comfortably to the rhythms of the tide, and it certainly awakens our desire for more adventure. The rest of our trip has all the ingredients to satisfy it: uncertainty, the unknown, insecurity and the need for freedom. Obtaining a permit to visit the island we have set out to see is discouraging, to say the least. It makes any French administrative quest seem pleasurable. A few years ago, our destination had become an al-Qaida hideout, and the Indian government was asked to take back control over its territory, hence the difficulty in acquiring a permit. However the Somali pirates have been attacking ships in the area for years now. Most of the crew members in the sea freight are either from the Philippines or India because these countries are a huge reservoir of cheap and manageable workers. The pirates have hundreds of Indian sea men as hostage somewhere in Somalia but nobody is willing to pay a ransom to set them free (neither the Indian government or the charterer).

To embark for these islands, one has to resist the song of the sirens—not the one Ulysses and his men had to fear, but the overwhelming warnings against everything and everyone. I cannot get used to this constant quest for security in which our societies seem to confine themselves. People see precaution as a virtue, while I see it as an excuse for giving up and avoiding taking risks, attempting new things, and living! It is one of the big issues around watersports, because of their risky nature! In this state of mind—of adventure—we embark on the ferry on our way overseas. For too long I have dreamed of these islands (two-thirds are inaccessible to nonIndian visitors) and I will not let these warnings deter

There is so much to see along the canals, including the old Portuguese church and the Hindu or Buddhist temples. Together with the mosques, they are testament to the Hindi openness to many religious paths and the freedom to choose one without condemning the others. We also dive into yoga practice with different gurus and test the Ayurvedic treatments, some of the powerful teachings that India has offered to the Western world. The backwaters are like an open-air theater between land and water, where daily life scenes are constantly played out. Their perfect aesthetics could be mistaken for a made-up setting, a staging that the spectator would never tire of admiring.

me: “Forget about precaution! Indian ferry or not, pirates or not, al-Qaida or not, we are going ... or at least we are trying!” Knowing when this ferry is leaving is not easy, but getting to know when it comes back is plain mystery: “When is the return?” I ask the person in charge. He answers me by bobbing his head in a typical Indian manner that always delights me, which can mean pretty much anything. “Monsoon starting, maybe no boat if bad weather,” he says after a while. Leaving without knowing when you’ll return has to be the true way of traveling. Gérard Chaliand, traveler and poet, says, “The cultural wealth of knowing the world, paid by physical risk, accepted insecurity and attachment to independence, is priceless.” I share his values and count on them to elevate us above this massive thirst for security. Over time I realize that the treasures of traveling are not the ones we think. We believe we are on a quest for waves but we come back touched by a single image, a sound, an atmosphere. I am sitting on my SUP as Manu passes by me, heading toward the peak. We’ve been here long enough to have forgotten what day it is. We are now used to

Lou goes back to shore after a small frightful episode on her SUP: She doesn’t quite realize how close she gets to the rocks. She’s back on the beach with her sister, who’s being spoiled by Rashidu, our dedicated “helper” since our arrival. A few moments later I look up toward the pier that was built through the lineup. Lou is on the back of Rashidu’s motorcycle and Shadé is sandwiched between the two of them. “Mommy,” she shouts with a huge grin on her face, “we’re going to have tea at Rashidu’s house.” Manu’s smile is her best answer, and they disappear down the small path leading to the medina. Today, months after our return, I remember this moment of completeness most vividly: a time where everything seems to fall into place, where everyone is living entirely in the moment, without any apprehensions or restraint toward the location and the people around us. What matters most is the emotion, not the action or the surroundings. I felt I had pierced through her spirit for a brief instant that day. To experience this I had shed enough of my fears, fantasies and clichés, which, even when maintained in a state of clinical death, can come alive again when experiencing such cultural and geographical distance. We carry on surfing this perfect righthander, knowing that our daughters are being spoiled like princesses by all of Rashidu’s aunts, sisters, cousins and neighbors. The offshore breeze carries smells of burning trash from the shore. Goats rummage through it, looking for something to eat, while cows quietly graze under the coconut trees. From time to time, children will gather under the shade of the big tree that hangs over the end of the wave. Along with the animals, they are the only few spectators at our sessions, making the long ferry hours and past fears now seem totally ridiculous. After our sessions we go back to the side of the island with the turquoise lagoon, where the girls can swim surrounded by dozens of friendly turtles. We must awaken the spirit of adventure that lies in us in order to experience strong emotions like these and to achieve a better understanding of the world.

Ruth Holland:

In public, Ruth Holland is all smiles and laughter, but behind the scenes she is serious about the development of stand-up paddle programs for Special Olympics. She is the driving force behind what happens.

GIVING THE GIFT OF

connecting on the water BY WYMAN KNOTT I PHOTOS BY ROBERT SULLIVAN

It’s sunrise at Higgs Beach in Key West, Florida, and tents cast their shadows near the shoreline. Early mornings in Key West will usually find tourists and the late-night crowd heading home, but on this Sunday morning a unique group of paddlers are just starting their day as they gear up for the third annual Stand Up Paddle Invitational, an event created to help generate interest and funds for the local stand-up paddle program. Ruth Holland has been an integral part of the development of this particular stand-up paddle program. Following a paddleboard yoga class, Holland was inspired by an idea that individuals with intellectual disabilities would enjoy the benefits of paddleboarding. As a longtime educator working with students with special needs, she immediately recognized how spending time on the water could help such people embrace their talents. She says, “Having a brother with special needs, I knew that silent discrimination for people diagnosed with intellectual disabilities existed in our society. To give the gift of water access to people who would never have had it otherwise would open a huge door on our island of Key West.” With the help of others who shared that belief, Holland set out to bring SUP to Special Olympics athletes in Florida. Within weeks, Holland connected with another Special Olympics coach, MJ Weibling, for a board race in Naples, Florida, that was also raising funds for Special Olympics. Weibling shared Holland’s dream to open the sport to people with intellectual disabilities. At that first event in Naples, six athletes sat on paddleboards as an experienced paddler navigated the calm water. There were no competition rules for the Special Olympics athletes but their enthusiasm for paddleboarding was obvious. That enthusiasm was a catalyst. Inspired, Holland approached her local Special Olympics program with her idea, but learned that before any athletes could get on a board, they would have to know how to swim. Lacking a swimming program near her Florida Keys home, Holland enlisted William Elkins from Ultimate Racing to provide swimming lessons and help start a Special Olympics Florida Aquatics Program.

Finishing Strong: PEGGY KING

Age doesn’t have to be an obstacle

With a winning smile on her face, Peggy takes on the challenge of OluKai’s 2014 Ho’olaule’a Race: Maliko Gulch to Kanaha Park.

BY PAIGE DROFT

WHEN WE THINK OF FEMALE ATHLETES on the water, we tend to put up age barriers that define us. Peggy King is confidently taking that barrier down, demonstrating that age is just a number. To say that Peggy King is an active woman is an understatement. Born in upstate New York, Peggy did everything from skiing (water and snow) and sailing small boats to studying classical piano. She graduated from the University of Denver with a degree and a husband, Bill, whom she met while there. They returned to Kula Maui, where Bill is from, shortly after graduation. After 37 years of marriage and a grown son, Garfield (or Gar, for short), Peggy taught piano privately and was a fitness instructor and trainer at Valley Isle Fitness Center. When that didn’t fill all her time, she taught piano and physical education at some of Maui’s elementary schools. Age has not slowed her down in the least. At 61 years old, Peggy is currently an animal rescuer for Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation, where she helps to find good homes for her fourlegged friends and does doggy nail trims. Success on the water has not always been there for Peggy, starting when she was a young bride and went over the falls on a rubber raft at a beach break. But her fear of the water did not stop her from learning how to windsurf, which evolved to kiteboarding with Gar. In 2008, Gar was heading off to college on the mainland, and Peggy found she no longer wanted to kiteboard in blustery summer winds. It was then that trusty friend and massage therapist Bill Boyum turned her on to SUP. The gusty winds were now a source of pleasure: famed Maliko downwind runs, open ocean surfing and no crowds. She loved it and still does. Peggy soon met other people to SUP with, but she found they were more skilled, so it was challenging to keep up. Feeling the need to get some extra help, she hired Jeremy Riggs, who runs Paddle with Riggs and specializes

in training, coaching and guidance in downwind runs.

Peggy’s first race was the 2008 Maui Paddleboard Championships. Laughing, she says she was a “DFL,” and mainly spent most of the time on her knees. But that didn’t stop her; she went on to achieve her two biggest accomplishments yet. On September 13 of this year, Peggy competed in the 27-mile Pailolo Channel Crossing: the back-to-back Maui to Molokai solo and the Molokai 4 Molokai race, which benefits Molokai youth programs. In the M4M race, she had previously raced the route and was pleased to improve on her time by more than 40 minutes (from 5:34 to 4:50). Peggy was the oldest contestant in both races. The entire weekend was not only

one of her most memorable SUP experiences; it was one of the happiest moments of her life. Peggy has only competed in races on Maui. She notes that it’s hard to do more than that due to expenses, family obligations, and other commitments and activities. “I’d be scared to do BOP with the big surf and crowds,” she admits. “I think the flatwater paddling is very difficult. I would have to train differently, and I greatly respect those who do all these races. I can’t deny some of these events intrigue me and that it would be fun to go and meet all the mainland people I read about. I would like to do the Hood River race someday.” Peggy’s favorite hardgoods in her quiver consist of SIC boards for her downwind racing, a Bullet 14’ and F 16’. Jimmy Lewis boards are her choice for SUP surfing—a 9’x30” quad.

Making her under-five-hour deadline elicits a smile from Peggy at the M2M finish line at Kanakaukai Harbor on Molokai. PHOTO: 808 PHOTOGRAPHY

Her treasured sticks consist of a Quickblade V drive paddle for her downwinding, and for surfing Peggy wields Werner or SIC paddles. “I love my equipment and give thanks for Mark Raaphorst and the guys at the SIC Maui factory, and Jimmy

the races and crossings she uses the Isagenix electrolyte solution in her hydration pack and eats Kind Bars on the fly. “Those are two things that work well for me,” she says. Getting older also means getting wiser and recognizing one’s limitations. In Peggy’s 50s, she got injured kiteboarding a few times, and age-related low-back issues surfaced. Injuries mean restrictions on exercise and activity, pain and weight gain. Happily, last year she remained injury-free. She worked hard and lost 20 pounds. Peggy’s desire to do the Maui to Molokai Crossing and finish in less than five hours was intense. Peggy shares, “When you want something that bad, you have to be sensible about your training and eating. I can’t get overtired, otherwise I overeat and risk getting hurt again!” Peggy finds her inspiration in people in the stand-up world, including Jeremy Riggs, David Kalama and Jamie Mitchell. Andrea Moller, Terrene Black and Lina Augatis are some of the women who inspire her as well. Of course, there are all of her Maui friends who juggle careers and families and still achieve excellence in SUP—Livio Menalau, Devin Blish and Sharon Look, to name a few. Then there are women age 50 and older who do well in SUP: Kathy Shipman, who is a former competitive swimmer and beats many of the men, Carolyn Annerud, Audrey Lee, Laola Aea and Judy Shasek. “I’m inspired by the young guns too,” she says, “but not as much. Their time will come after they overcome a few more life obstacles.” We asked Peggy what advice she has for those who want to try standup paddling or even racing. She left us with these tips: Take lessons, get coaching and attend clinics from reputable instructors. Be familiar with and get comfortable in the water, especially in the conditions you will paddle in. Be safe. Know your limits and don’t exceed them. Paddle with a buddy and let others know you have gone out. Use common sense—use a board leash and PFD, and check your equipment. If your leash breaks, paddle after your board first! Progress slowly and evenly. Apply this to the races you choose to participate in. Rent equipment at first so you won’t waste money on equipment you grow out of, or that is too advanced for your current skill level. “I feel that it’s important to participate in a comprehensive fitness and exercise program in addition to just paddling for improved general fitness preparedness and injury prevention,” she says. Peggy has chosen CrossFit Upcountry Maui and their programs. “CrossFit has gotten a bad rap as being too hard or dangerous, but good programs have scalable workouts,” she says. By attending these classes, she has been able to remain injuryfree for 18 months and make fitness gains she hadn’t thought to try in 14 years! Peggy strongly feels that in addition to her SUP, this class has played a big part in all of her fitness and SUP improvements she made this past year. Her race results support that theory!

BY WYMAN KNOTT I PHOTOS BY TERESA FAE/SOUL OF PHOTOGRAPHY

PREGNANCY CHANGES A WOMAN’S LIFE beyond our deepest imagination and in more ways than one. It is embarking on a journey that doesn’t stop once you are no longer pregnant. It is an expedition with ups and downs; you could even call it a pilgrimage of sorts. The journey doesn’t end until we draw our last breath, and even then, it never truly ends. Everything you do to nurture that small being till adulthood will be felt for life. It is an opportunity and a gift to that special soul that’s been entrusted to you.

Sarah Eschenbach-Freeman has a fairly good grasp on this. The clarity of her purpose is evident in her smiling blue eyes. She is the mother to two sets of twins. Yes, you read that right: She’s the mother to 12-year-old twins (a boy and a girl) and stepmom to 7-year-old twin boys, and a baby girl will grace the family in early 2015. Off the water, balance is essential to Sarah; on the water, she found it. In 2006, when she first started to SUP, the water became her healing grounds. After going through a divorce, Sarah bought a stand-up paddleboard. Stand-up paddling brought a connection between bliss, balance and meditation. She wanted to share the growing awareness of the gift of being on the water. With Marci Kawar, who is now her business partner at Floating Yogis, she dabbled in SUP yoga. Moving through asanas, playing with inversions and lying in Savasana, she felt an even deeper connection to the water, a growing passion and a deep sense of gratitude. Sarah acknowledges that the biggest challenge of SUP yoga is the unpredictability of the water, which mimics the constant change of life: the highs and lows, winds and sometimes-unstable surfaces. It has been a

valuable lesson to go with the flow and embrace the immediate present with a surrendered and balanced state. Pregnancy on the water has brought Sarah to a place of deeper mindfulness as a teacher and practitioner. One’s balance and center of gravity certainly change at seven months pregnant. After the first trimester, she had to avoid lying on her belly, so she has had to find other forms of engagement. Twists that compress the belly are also modified. Learning to really go within and do what is right for her is part of that discovery. SUP yoga is just that: listening to what’s right for you, finding that connection and really checking in with yourself. It’s easy to get wrapped up in poses, literally and figuratively, and forget what yoga is really about. The water and pregnancy have helped bring Sarah back to that place of meditation, stillness and breath. Although Sarah had a few physical limitations for a couple of months, the beautiful trade-off is that spiritually and emotionally, prenatal SUP yoga has taken her beyond her wildest dreams. The calm connection she finds out on the water has been a sustaining and supporting factor throughout her pregnancy. Sarah believes that SUP yoga will be one of her greatest tools in the preparation of birthing her daughter. The connection she feels to her baby as she is kicking inside of her when Sarah is teaching and practicing SUP yoga is a truly unique experience. “Being on the water has created this space for an enormous amount of growth in my own personal life. It’s not just the asanas that count when you are out on the water, it is something much deeper that each person experiences in her own authentic way. I cannot repeat often enough that my time on the water has mimicked my life journey. I have weathered some of the heaviest storms of my life out on the water and then eased weightlessly back into that warming sunset with a sense of peace and balance. Being seven months pregnant out on the water feels like that warm sunset flowing through me as I balance in one of my favorite poses, Shirshasana.” “It is an inspirational and moving experience for us to watch people overcome fears, move past personal obstacles, find a sense of healing or even just conquer a pose they have been dreaming of!” Sarah shares. Practicing yoga on the water is unlike anything else. From a physical standpoint, just to stay on board, SUP yoga forces you to engage muscles that you may not have considered using on land. From an emotional standpoint, being out on the water and in nature is so inherently healing that being in the most

beautiful yoga studios in the world can’t compare. SUP yoga enables you to become extremely present. The water is an amazing dichotomy, sometimes creating fear and trepidation, and sometimes peace and calm. The yin and the yang create fluidity. Sarah’s mantra is one of positivity and optimism: “I believe character is caught, not taught, and therefore aim to live a life full of gratitude, awareness, peace, love and appreciation for Mother Earth, the waters that fill it and every human who inhabits this world. Perhaps this will trickle down to the next generation of SUP yogis!”
