FROM THE EDITOR

Travel is an eye-opening experience. It is an opportunity to gain both an education of practical knowledge and understanding. It builds awareness. Human activity has harmful effects on our planet. And when it comes to addressing the environmental issues we face, there are advocates among us who bring us that awareness and motivate us to be proactive. Samata brings to the forefront women who take you there through their lifestyle, their travels and their experiences. Are we listening, or are we choosing to sit comfortably at home, making no effort? Start now; start small. Our world has been established by the way we think. It cannot be changed without changing the way we think or the way we see. Margaret Mead said it well: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Change is often difficult, but it is often for the best. Go and accomplish great things, big or small. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone. LUCY LUCILLE

“Our travels usually lead us to very remote places, but complete isolation is what comes to me as we begin our descent in the plane. As far as I can see, it is a variation of turquoise lagoons, submerged sandbars and just a small low ribbon of land, large enough to welcome our airplane.” CARINE CAMBOULIVES PHOTO BY PIERRE BOURAS

TIPS SCOTT ESTRADA

GET YOUR GI RIGHT

LEARN TO EAT FOR OPTIMAL DIGESTION One thing is for certain: When your gastrointestinal (GI) tract isn’t healthy and functioning well, it can affect everything! Your mood, energy, sleep, immunity, performance, focus and digestion are all compromised.

It’s important to understand the nature of what contributes to a poorly functioning GI so we can take control, heal the gut with wise choices and end needless suffering forever. The ecological system that is our GI tract and mainly our gut houses a tremendous amount of bacteria, which make up about 3-4 pounds of our body weight. It’s a huge amount of single-celled organisms that outnumber our human cells 10-to-1 (if 100 trillion cells make up a human, 90 trillion are bacteria). Wouldn’t it make sense to make good friends, build alliances, and make sure their home is well cared for? In a healthy gut there should be 80 percent “good” bacteria and 20 percent yeasts, molds and fungus; when this ratio is off, so are we. These “bad” bacteria have important roles, but when their numbers grow out of control and the good armies’ numbers dwindle, many unwanted symptoms begin to show up. Step 1 is to greatly reduce the amount of sugar in your intake, and examine the processed refined grains, wheat and dairy in your diet. These all turn into glucose in the end and feed the bad bacteria what they need to populate. Even too much fruit can be an issue for someone suffering from a gut imbalance. Step 2 is to introduce fermented/cultured foods into your daily intake. This goes beyond the dill pickle or sugar-filled yogurt I had growing up. These amazing foods have made a comeback in the last 10 to15 years as more people are seeking true medicine to heal themselves. One cup or even a half-cup a day does the trick. These foods support the healthy gut ecology and allow good armies to grow. Cultured food has been around for centuries as refrigeration wasn’t always an option. Today, many Old World recipes and techniques allow us to easily get our hands on these truly medicinal foods.

SAUERKRAUT/KIM CHEE/ FERMENTED VEGGIES Look for artisanal, local companies producing many varieties of these foods loaded with healthy bacteria, enzymes, and vitamins that naturally occur in fermented foods. Add some to salads, wraps, veggies dishes or eggs, or just eat them right from the jar! You can also make your own. Check out YouTube for a simple tutorial.

KEFIR This is a cultured liquid base that would commonly be seen in a milk-based recipe. Today, you can get raw cow milk kefirs and goat milk kefirs like drinkable yogurts. Look for ones with very little sugar. Coconut water kefirs have become popular for those who don’t want to eat dairy. You can buy kefir grains (a starter) and make some yourself!

KVASS An Old World recipe to ferment veggie juice is now available from coast to coast. Think of a super-fermented beet or green juice from your local juice shop, and you’ve got kvass!

KOMBUCHA/KEVITA Wildly popular in the last 10 years, you can now get kombucha just about anywhere, even on tap at local cafes, brew pubs and coffee shops. Look for ones with lower sugar as many commercial brands now make a variety of flavors with higher sugar content. Kevita is a cultured coconut water base that has a great “alive” taste in a variety of flavors. Step 3 is to find a good probiotic to take daily. Garden of Life makes a great line of raw probiotics, Renew Life; Dr. Mercola and Dr. Ohira also make a solid product. These are simple to take in capsule form and they deliver a variety of aggressive probiotic strains to the gut. Inner-Eco is a newer company making a concentrated coconut water probiotic delivering 100 billion bacteria per tablespoon at only $18 for a month’s supply. Forty billion to 50 billion per dose is a good standard; seek higher dose amounts if critical care is needed.

PROPER FOOD COMBINING One of the simplest things you can do to improve digestion and take stress off your organs is to practice better food combining. Coming from a meat-and-potato childhood, I had no idea that the meal I loved would just sit in my stomach for hours while my body was sending all its resources of energy to break it down, leaving me with the energy to do nothing except sit on a couch. That food was beginning to rot, creating huge amounts of acid byproducts my system had to absorb and expel, which required a large amount of my alkalizing minerals (these are stored for overall system balance, not digestion). Follow poor food combining for 20, 30or 40 years, and your digestive organs become congested and tired. Practice these basics and instantly improve how you feel.

THE FIVE BASICS OF QUICK-EXIT FOOD COMBINING TO OPTIMIZE DIGESTION a. Starches combine only with other starches and all raw and cooked veggies. b. Fleshes combine only with other fleshes, all raw veggies, and all cooked non-starch veggies. c. Nuts combine only with other nuts, seeds, dried fruit, bananas and all raw veggies. d. Dried fruit combine only with other dried fruits, avocados, bananas, nuts and all raw veggies. e. Fresh fruit should be eaten with nothing else, on an empty stomach. To optimize your digestion, your daily intake should shift toward whole foods with 25-30 grams of fiber; lots of green, leafy veggies; seasonal fruits; fresh-pressed green juices/smoothies; healthy fats; fermented/cultured foods; and lean proteins. A great resource to support you get your gut right is Donna Gates, who created the Body Ecology Program. bodyecology.com. Everything you need is there to transform your digestive world forever! Colon hydrotherapy is highly recommended to clean out impacted plaque in your colon if you’ve been suffering with a sluggish colon for some time. It’s also a good idea as simple maintenance of helping your system to remove toxic buildup. Seek out a pro in your area with a good reputation and experience.

IT’S VITAL THAT WE BUILD A HEALTHY GUT/GI TRACT. DIGESTION AND IMMUNITY GO HAND IN HAND WHEN IT COMES TO OPTIMIZING YOUR HEALTH! DON’T TAKE EITHER FOR GRANTED; MAKE THEM A PRIORITY AND THRIVE! For coaching on this topic or any health/nutrition needs, email Scott Estrada at scott@risesup.com

TIPS CASI RYNKOWSKI

THE TURKISH GETUP The Turkish Get-Up is a highly dynamic exercise that includes multiple movements. Because of this, it requires a level of mental concentration, body awareness and balance similar to what’s required for paddling. The paddling benefits don’t stop there. The exercise builds core strength and shoulder strength, improves mobility and allows you to learn to link movement created with our extremities and the rest of our body. Simply put, it’s a highly functional exercise that can do more for you than a single workout. During this exercise you will be gazing at the kettlebell the entire time. This is key while doing the movement as it will allow you to keep the weight over your center line of balance. Shift the weight too far forward and you become a long lever. The weight will then pull you forward, making your shoulder do all the work. If you keep the weight above you, aligned with your spine, you will be able to share the load throughout your body. I suggest starting this exercise without a weight. This will allow you to become familiar with the movement first.

1.

Lie flat on your back with your right knee bent and right foot flat on the floor. This is your plant foot and it should not move during the exercise. Holding the kettlebell in your right hand, extend your right arm up toward the ceiling. Extend your left arm out to the side with your hand flat on the floor. Your left arm is key to the next move.

1

2

3

4

2. While engaging your core, push the kettlebell toward the ceiling, and roll to your left hip, up onto your left forearm.

3. Now shift your weight from your forearm to the palm of

5

your hand.

4. Next, push your hips off the ground, keeping your core tight. Your body should form a T position.

5. Bend your left knee and move it under you to create your kneeling base. Your arms should stay in the T position.

6. Next is a big weight-shifting move. Pushing the kettlebell

6

toward the ceiling, move to a kneeling position.

7. Pushing the kettlebell toward the ceiling, shift your weight from your left kneeling leg to your front right leg and stand straight up. Reverse steps and end in your starting position. TIPS JULIE ROACH

MALASANA

GARLAND POSE “Yogi squat,” or malasana, helps keep hip joints fluid and flexible. But that is not all the pose offers. Add the instability of a paddleboard on the water and the benefits of this pose are exponential. Let’s break down the best way to take malasana from an indoor studio to the outdoor platform of a paddleboard. Always start with a warm-up paddle of 20 to 30 minutes. Make sure to anchor your board in a safe, calm area, away from boat traffic, obstacles (such as rocks), and docks.

1. FROM STANDING, BEND YOUR KNEES AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON THE BOARD.

Pivot right and extend your right leg toward the tail of the board. You should be squatting on your left leg. Extend your left hand out toward the rail of the board and hang on for stability. Extend your right arm toward the sky and rotate your torso toward the tail of the board. Sink down into your left heel, making sure to steady yourself with your left hand as you lower your heel to the board. Pull in your abs as you inhale, rotating and extending through the side body and right arm. Take a moment to tune into the succession of stretching, strengthening and twisting that’s all taking place here! Your left foot is rooted down and all the muscles are firing. Your left calf and quad are really lengthening and your back is stretching both vertically and horizontally, from your tailbone to your head and neck. You can bring your palms together at your heart if you feel stable enough to release the rail of the board. Take four or five breaths here, allowing yourself time to pause and take in the sweetness of your practice. Switch sides slowly by bringing your left knee to the board first, then shifting to the right knee and squatting toward the tail of the board. Just be sure to move your torso toward the center of the board, or over the carry handle.

2. BRING YOURSELF AROUND TO FACE THE NOSE OF YOUR BOARD. Squat with both knees bent and hands on either side of the board, or reach out and find the rails of the board and hold on. Sink slowly with your tailbone until your heels are down on the board. This may take a few breaths and support with your hands to either side of your hips. If you are squatting comfortably, walk you hands out in front of you and inside of your knees. Keep walking your hands forward and drop your forehead to the board. Settle in here and again notice the rapid fire stretching, strengthening, and keen awareness that is going on in all directions. Tailbone sinks toward your heels, head and neck release like an easy tug of war in either direction. Allow the pose to happen in the present moment and enjoy the benefits.

3. IF YOUR HEELS ARE FLAT AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO MOVE TO THE NEXT VARIATION, REACH YOUR RIGHT ARM AROUND THE RIGHT LEG, AND YOUR LEFT ARM UP AND AROUND YOUR BACK, REACHING FOR YOUR HANDS OR WRISTS BEHIND YOUR BACK (YOU CAN TRY TO BIND WITH BOTH ARMS, BUT TRY A SINGLE BIND ON EACH SIDE FIRST). Step back into downward-facing dog and alternate bending one knee as you straighten the other. This will allow the fluids to flush through your ankles, knees and legs, re-energizing you by flushing your lower body with some fresh blood. B.K.S. Iyengar said that asanas (poses) become a rhythmic flow with actions leading to an uninterrupted flow of awareness thoroughout your entire system. Experiment with this series of variations of malasana, and invite this synchronicity or inner rhythm on the board. Namaste. TIPS AMBER SHADWICK

AGE WITH GRACE:

SUPPORT YOUR SPINE AND STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE Mobility loss and misalignment are a part of the aging process. The goal of physical fitness isn’t just to gain strength but also to improve flexibility, range of motion, joint alignment and proprioception. These days, standard strength training methods of solely isolating a particular group of muscles is deemed ineffective and obsolete. The core concept of conditioning several areas of the body at once, scientifically termed “func-tional fitness,” is the most effective, creative and FUNctional way to train and strength-en your core.

PHOTO BY DENMAN BENNETT OR DENMANBENNETT.COM

The sport of stand-up paddleboarding encourages just that! The hip and shoulder rotation required to enter the paddle vertically and uncoil the hips, which propels the board forward, is no different than the movement used to swing a golf club, tennis racket or baseball bat. However, beneficially the SUPer active enthusiast is functioning atop an unstable surface, the water. The core then is naturally and involuntarily engaged in efforts to promote stability, balance, strength and resilience. In quest to strengthen the body’s core, instability or resistance is necessary. Combined – instability and resistance – promote muscular engagement and stimulate active response. Understanding the core is essential to our adaptive functionality, especially as we age. And so as we begin to understand that our core encompasses beyond our midsection, we begin to acknowledge that core muscles are connected to our legs and back. The way we sit, stand and squat requires core development. Therefore, when thinking about training the core, let us refocus our efforts on functional training methods that provide instability and resistance. Stand-up paddleboarding and SUP yoga (modalities on water); BOSU, SURF-SET and TRX Rip Training (modalities on land); and any other method of functional training that requires stabilization of the trunk while simultaneously requiring movement of the extremities will inherently improve core function. Integrating instability in efforts to promote stability is key! Hence, aspire to continue to engage in approaches that help strengthen the back and gluteus together with the ligaments and muscles that form the spinal column, as this will help to offset the effects of aging. Fostering improvements in core strength will help reduce the risk of damage to our bones, especially those created during excessive or repetitive weight bearing movements. Strengthening the core will not only help in supporting the spine; it is the FUNdamental groundwork for safe, sustainable and FUNctional independence. Core strength naturally encourages longevity and, most importantly, inspires graceful aging at any stage in life. Amber Shadwick, owner of FITSIDE, is a nationally recognized fitness and wellness professional. She has developed the SUP Yoga program at Hilton Head Island’s premiere outfitter, Outside Hilton Head. TIPS AMELIA TRAVIS

MEET AMELIA TRAVIS!

SHE IS A TEACHER, THE FOUNDER OF STOKED YOGI AND OUR NEW DIY COLUMNIST. After breaking her back while surfing in 2012, Amelia realized that life is too short to do anything but what you love. Her zest for whole living, yoga and the ocean are evident in all aspects of her life and business. Through trainings, workshops, retreats, blogging and YouTube videos, she connects and inspires women all over the world to live by the Stoked Yogi mantra: Set your intention, breathe it to life. Summer is almost here! It’s time to shed the winter layers and bring out the shorts and bikinis. If your skin has been hibernating since October, this summer sugar scrub is just the right thing to get your skin soft, smooth and glowing. The best part? It’s super-easy to make. You only need three simple ingredients, which you can find in your kitchen or the local health food store. It takes about five minutes to make and is an awesome alternative to store-bought products laden with chemicals and toxins. Love your skin and it will love you back.

SUMMER GLOW SUGAR SCRUB What You’ll Need: Organic cane sugar (1 cup) Organic coconut oil (½ cup) Essential oils (20-30 drops) Airtight container to store scrub (preferably glass)

MIX IT UP: Melt coconut oil over low heat until liquefied. Add cane sugar and essential oils and mix well. Transfer to airtight container.

MAKE IT YOURS: Choosing the right essential oils is totally up to you. Try citrus combinations like eucalyptus, bergamot and lemon for an energizing morning scrub. To wind down, add lavender essential oil and organic vanilla extract. Get creative with your oils and find the scent that suits you. CHRISTMAS

ISLAND a vanishing paradise By Carine Camboulives Photos by Pierre Bouras

S A M ATA M A G . C O M

43

I have been traveling the world with my family for more than 15 years, looking for new spots and raising awareness of environmental challenges. This trip was urgent as the small Republic of Kiribati, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, is being submerged by the fast rise of seawater. Global warming has its first climate refugees living on some islands that look like paradise.

F

or a couple of years, my husband Manu and I have been talking about going to Kiritimati, or Christmas Island. Lou (my 8-year-old), who loves to sneak into our conversations, has been pretty excited about it: visiting the island of Santa Claus! Even if the temperature is way warmer than the North Pole, she thinks this is his vacation island retreat. For us, the story in all possibilty may not have a happy ending, like A Christmas Carol. The reality reads more like a tragedy. The largest coral atoll in the world is also one of the poorest places on earth, and the whole nation of Kiribati (pronounced Kiribass) is slowly vanishing into the Pacific Ocean. Discovering those islands and witnessing climate change became an emergency for us as they are supposed to disappear from the maps in a few decades. Until the last few years, the only way to get there with our boards was to take a cargo ship from Hawaii, which travel there approximately once a month. With a newborn baby, Shadé, I was happy to wait a bit longer and be able to fly. Our travels usually lead us to very remote places, but complete isolation is what comes to me as we begin our descent in the plane. As far as I can see, it is a variation of turquoise lagoons, submerged sandbars and just a small low ribbon of land, large enough to welcome our airplane. The airport terminal is a tiny structure with no doors but two big signs: “Welcome to Christmas Island, Elevation: 5 feet, 119 miles north of Equator.” “The island is fortunate to be free of many serious pests and diseases due in part to its isolation. Kona Mauri to Kiritimati!” Our host, Timei, welcomes us with a big smile. “Mauri! It is so nice to see a foreign family here! I don’t think we ever welcome some white kids before, especially a blond baby like this!” he says, taking Shadé in his arms right away. “I have six daughters, so plenty babysitters waiting for you! The only tourists here are fishermen. They come for bone fishing, and then usually do not bring their wife; it is way too remote,” he laughs. “Really?” I answer, trying to find a seat in the destroyed, dinged-up minibus. “Sorry, I know my bus is old – 15 years? It was one of the first cars on the island, so I had to use it as a community bus! That is why there are no more seats!” As we are driving, Timei shows us the small fishing villages, explaining how people live here with virtually nothing. Each hut is made of coconut wood and palms. On the shore, a few camping sites are built for the weekends. I inhale the salty air, looking at the ocean on my left and the ocean on my right. Both ocean and lagoon can nearly always be seen. I guess everyone lives on “ocean front” here! The silky light reflects on endless coconut groves. A French missionary, Father Emmanuel Rougier, leased Christmas Island in 1913. At this time, there were very few coconut trees; the only visible vegetation was some low clumps of salt bush, about 3 feet high. Rougier was an ambitious and visionary explorer. The British granted him an 87-year occupation license to develop the island, and especially the copra industry (copra is the dried meat of the coconut used to extract coconut oil). He bought a beautiful two-mast ship in San Francisco, sailed to Tahiti to find workers, and brought them back to

Christmas Island with all the materials and provisions to establish a settlement. At this time, the island was completely isolated from the rest of the world. Rougier’s boats were the only connection. Everything had to be done: Build the road, create housing for the employees, found a store, create storage for the copra, and draw a detailed map. He also issued his own stamps and personally named any relevant landmarks on the map: London, Paris, Poland (as his manager was Polish), Tahiti, Algeria, Camp Francais... Rougier was virtually independent and ruled his domain without much interference from the outside world. He called his effort “a gigantic labor but which will remain forever.”

I feel like I’m entering a Gauguin painting. Women are cooking outside, bathing the kids from a well, or just sitting down breading coconut palms to build walls and roofs for the houses. They seem pretty surprised to see us and the kids are running after our bus, screaming: “Imatang, Imatang!” (“White people!”) The village is built around churches, schools and a maneaba (meeting house), where the community comes to chat, protected from the burning sun by its huge roof of coconut wood, held together with coconut string and thatched with pandanus leaves. Both sides of the roof reach the ground, lowering the temperature inside.

We pass Tenesse Village and arrive in London. Rougier wanted to be polite and so chose at least one name showing that his island was still a possession of the Queen.

“I am so excited to show you our small paradise,” says Timei. “Christmas is a present from the sky!” “Well, it is for sure!” I say, discovering our bungalows, which are entirely homemade from coconut trees and 100 meters from one of the biggest lagoons in the world! Turquoise water and shallow white sand surrounded by gigantic bays of palms trees… I think we found a paradise for SUPing! As soon as we take our boards to the beach, all the kids from the village surround us. They are so excited that I cannot even launch. They are used to the shallow water and jump in with clothes on. Of course, most of them have never seen a bathing suit but we also realize that they don’t even know how to swim! The water is warm and the sun still intense for the late afternoon. Manu rigs a sail on the SUP board and takes each child for a ride. I can hear them scream and laugh from the other side of the bay. Each day after school, the kids will come to meet us to get their dose of adrenaline! We can see how the sea dominates life here, and the lagoon is a big part of the island resources. On light wind days, fishermen walk far out in the lagoon with their net on their shoulders. Fish and lobsters are the basis of the diet here.

As soon as the wind blows, the fishermen take out their te wa (small, traditional canoes with sails). Nearly all the materials used for the construction of these canoes comes from the land. Fathers and sons craft the wood while the women tease fibers from coconut husk after soaking them in the lagoon for several months. They roll the fine strands on their thighs, and skein after skein, a string is made. As Rougier said, “Coconut palm tree is the king of the trees.” How many people survive on earth thanks to this “tree of life”? We have been made aware of this on our trips in Papua or Marshall’s. It offers tribes and islanders water, food, oil, a roof, shade, furniture, etc. Christmas Island became the biggest coconut palm plantation in the world. In 1938, more than 800,000 trees were planted. Each mature coconut palm tree can yield up to 75 fruits per year and offers more than 80 derived products. Early the next morning we go check the ocean, which is a completely different vision: rocky shores of old white reef, poor vegetation and big, impressive swell. later. Solid 8-footers are closing out the bay. The only sailboat visiting has to move his anchorage way farther out. The wind is too offshore to kitesurf. The current is strong, the shallow bottom full of big rocks that stick out, and there is no channel. There is a challenge as I try to pass the whitewater out to the surf. The calm of the lagoon made me think it would be easier. Manu is having a blast. Waves won’t drop too much during our stay, offering us some awesome surf and SUP sessions. Lou is having fun on the smaller days with a local kid who found a broken board. But she is laughing so much that she forgets to duck-dive on the bigger set. “I quit surfing! I am done!” I hear her scream and cry. Luckily there are so many kids waiting for her to play on the beach that a smile is back on her face a few minutes later. Later on, we visit the school and show our travel pictures. Our arrival is so chaotic that we cannot even walk to the classrooms. Kids are jumping and screaming; the ones we know already give us a big hug and show off, explaining that they already went on our boards! The principal has a hard time calming everyone down. We attend the singing rehearsal for Independence Day, the biggest celebration of the year. Sixty kids are singing beautifully and drumming with two wooden sticks. Sitting in the middle, I can also see some ukus (head lice) jumping on their heads with rhythm. Shadé will inevitably bring those “Christmas ornaments” home to Maui! 50

Timei wants to show us another part of his island and take us camping for a week to Paris! As a born and raised Parisian girl, I am pretty excited by this adventure! We load our gear on a local boat. Timei is taking his family and helpers too with tons of camping gear: comfy mattresses, a table, generator... this is deluxe camping! London and Paris are separated by a long pass with Cook Island in the middle, an uninhabited bird sanctuary. Did I mention that Captain James Cook was the first Englishman to discover the Island on the eve of Christmas in 1977, and even though the island was known as Kirimimati, the Christmas Island nickname has stuck. By road, this trip would take us four hours, but it is just a 20-minute boat ride. As we approach Paris, a school of dolphins is escorting us. We all jump in the water to thank them and play. The vision is breathtaking!

I understand why Rougier settled his house on this deserted point. He invented a series of lamp signals to be seen from London when help was needed, Timei sees our faces and says with a smile: “I told you it was a paradise!” As soon as we anchor, everyone gets busy cleaning the beach, trimming the coconut palms and taking the coconuts down, so we don’t get knocked out. We set up our tents while Lou and Shadé learn how to weave some mats and plates from the large palms. Two young fishermen come back with their catch, and we discover six baby sharks dying on the beach. “Are you eating those?” we ask. They answer no, but Timei says sometimes they do, or they just sell the dorsal fin. We try to explain that sharks should be protected. We take them back in the water, trying everything to revive them. While I am using

reiki and energy medicine, Lou is going to cut some pieces of fish so they can smell it, Shadé, who is kind of the same size as her “sharky,” just wants to kiss and pet them. They swim a bit and fall to the bottom, belly up. Finally, after 45 minutes of efforts, they come back to life and disappear. We are so happy and hope they don’t forget to tell their parents that we saved them so we can still surf safely at the peak. Timei sets up a big fire camp as we start to eat our grilled fish, lying down on our organic mats. The girls are still getting more wood. Timei and his wife, Tima, tell us a bit more about their past. They got lucky to go study in Hawaii when they were young. They were married and had their five daughters there. Going to a modern world was a shock, for sure. Imagine seeing an escalator or elevator for the first time, or a highway, supermarkets, etc. Their friend Tita is laughing, explaining how she landed in Honolulu for the first time and went directly to a hotel. She thought the elevator was the bedroom, but she was too shy to ask where the bed was! Returning to Christmas was another shock, especially for the young girls, who had to learn how to live without running water or electricity, bathrooms, chairs, food diversity, etc. “At the time,” said Tima, “the island continuously ran out of food. The new generation does not want to live on coconuts and fish. They want rice, flour and sugar. S A M ATA M A G . C O M

There are times when everybody is hungry; there are times when everybody is sick. The commercial fishing boats took all our fish. Before I could see tuna all around the shore, and birds following them. Now that those big vessels from Spain are here, we don’t see tuna anymore. That’s sad; they take all our resources.” They know they will have to leave their paradise one day when the land is underwater. The government is already asking for help and shelters from the U.N. for the first “climate refugees.” The irony is that these poor people have absolutely no impact on global warming. They just endure the consequences of our crazy lifestyle. If the sea level rises by 1 meter, more than 1 million people will have to move. Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati, is already facing a critical situation. Inhabitants are moving their huts all the time. At least that is one of the sad advantages of poverty: Their tiny structures are easily trans-

portable. They try to build some seawalls by just pouring cement in the lagoon. Everyone is scared of the high-tide seasons. When the flooding occurs at night, it is complete chaos. The freshwater wells are getting contaminated, making kids get very sick; the lagoon is polluted; and the trees are dying. Locals describe their old camping days on the luxuriant islet of Bikeman, which had coconut trees and maneaba. It has been submerged and swallowed by the sea! For scientists, Bikeman serves as a reminder that the impacts of climate change are going to depend on what people do and how they adapt. Each seawall built redirects the sediments, taking the sand out to create other sandbars. The last day of camping, each one of us plants a coconut tree, hoping they will remain forever to give food and water to the next generation. It’s a symbolic act that I hope our daughters will remember forever. I am sure Father Rougier is watching us. Lou is crying. She really wants to stay. Timei, Tima and their daughters are hugging her: “You can come back whenever you want. You have a family here now.” It is true that we really did find a family. Lou is looking at us, begging: “Please, let’s come back for Christmas!” FOR MORE INFO: CARINECAMBOULIVES.FR INSTAGRAM: @CARINECAMBOULIVES

Racers from around the world competed in the 2015 Painkiller Cup. Scheduled for January 17, the event featured stand-up and surf ski racing and offered $12,000 in prize money. The race course is killer.

T

he event’s unique format features stand-up paddle (SUP) teams racing 14 miles downwind from Trellis Bay to the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke. Each team must include at least one female paddler. The winning SUP team gets $5,000. The surf ski portion of the race is contested by single paddlers who depart 30 minutes after the SUP teams. A mini-Painkiller Cup catering to fewer intrepid racers is also a feature of the event. The mini event started at Sandy Cay and ended at the Soggy Dollar Bar. The SUP teams begin at Trellis Bay at 10 a.m. The teams paddle downwind to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Each team is followed by a chase boat, and there are mandatory 25-minute changeovers. Each team must submit a rotation schedule before the race. The first team is expected to finish in about two hours and 30 minutes. The event is unique in a couple of ways. The format, where teams switch off paddling the downwind course, is unique. The event creators liked the idea of having women as a part of the event, so they stipulated each team had to include at least one female paddler. The other unique element is the setting: the British Virgin Islands are very beautiful! The Painkiller Cup was an idea that Jerry O’Connell (the owner of the Soggy Dollar Bar) and Andy Morrell, head honcho of Ocean Promotions, cooked up, probably over a Painkiller rum drink. The event was initially a part of the HIHO race, the weeklong windsurfing and SUP event they ran every July. They moved it to January when they stopped running the HIHO race a few years ago. Organized by Ocean Promotions, which formerly managed the annual HIHO windsurfing race, the Painkiller Cup is the Caribbean’s richest professional paddle event. “SUP is the fastest-growing water lifestyle in the world,” explains Morrell. “It’s great to have a top-level event in the BVI. And it’s great to see top paddlers traveling here from all over the world!’ The Painkiller Cup, which is in its third year, is sponsored by the Soggy Dollar Bar. HIHO is the secondary sponsor. Other sponsors include Ocean Potion sun protection.

shelbytaylor 1ST PLACE FINISHER Team Mexico Age: 22 From: Sayulita, Mexico My name is Shelby Rose Taylor. I am a 22-year-old Kentucky Girl, born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, and now living in Sayulita, Mexico (SUP heaven!). I grew up a competitive swimmer, soccer player and distance runner, but made the switch to stand-up about two years ago when I started paddling for the first time in Sayulita with the local team. I have been competing now for about a year in the international elite circuit, based out of Sayulita. In the town, we have a solid team environment that is super-special and unique to the sport. We have a coach/ trainer (my sponsor teammate, Ryan Helm) whose land training operates three to four days a week. It helps us to increase base strength and flexibility. I also train in the water five days a week. Water training consists of two days pushing distance and three days running intervals. You can also find me running two or three times a week for leg and cardio work, and I throw in more yoga to help protect my joints. This year I plan to compete in the top five races: Carolina Cup, Payette River Games, Gorge Paddle Challenge, Huntington Beach Grand Slam, and Battle of the Paddle. Involvement with the Mexico SUP Tour is one of my passions. I hope to increase awareness, interest and talent in the country. Participating in the Painkiller Cup was Helm’s idea. He contacted me and teammate Javier “Bicho” Jimenez with the dream of taking us to the breathtaking British Virgin Islands for a team relay race. We had been training so hard and were focused on the big events ahead, so he knew we were ready to race. With the help of Andy Morrell, race organizer, we were able to figure out a way to compete. Our boat captain, Jim Bryant, whom we dubbed “James Bond,” was a savior: He spent days watching the ocean and wind, and when it was race time, he had our course to victory ready! The entire race was incredible, from one paradise bay to another, with unexpected but beautiful glassy conditions and great people all around! Our team took a strong lead from the very beginning, and we were lucky enough to hold a substantial lead until the finish, where we took first place! It was so special to have the support and laughter of teammates by my side the entire race, yelling at me and making me smile while I was pushing as hard as my body would allow. They were able to help time me, guide me and coach me from an outside perspective, and having them teasing me and cheering for me made the time fly! The event was so fun, and great on all levels. We can’t wait to come back in 2016 to defend our title! Being on the water has saved my life. I suffered various health problems throughout high school, taking me from being a highly competitive athlete to a weak, sick kid. My confidence was shot after recovering, and I thought I would never be competitive in a sport again. When I found SUP, I found myself again. It allowed me to regain my physical and mental strength. It brings me the joy that I lost. SUP is unique in that I feel it is a very intimate relationship with the water; being so close to nature in an unintimidating way brings about an almost ancient sense of connection to the water. I have seen some of the coolest animals and demonstrations of nature while paddling. When I paddle, I feel like I am one with the water, as if I am doing something someone a long time before me experienced. My advice to any women who are interested in SUP and even starting to race is: Do it! Have no fear, feel no limits, jump in head first and enjoy the ride! The SUP industry is full of people who have had life-changing experiences. You will find mental/physical/emotional strength that you didn’t know you had. You will meet friends for life and you will feel good. Find a group of women to paddle with so you feel safe and supported. Never feel shy about asking for help, company or advice from fellow paddlers; SUPers are some of the coolest athletes on the planet. S A M ATA M A G . C O M

isabelle picard 2ND PLACE FINISHER Team Limin Age: 55 From: St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

My name is Isabelle Picard and I live on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I’ve been paddling for four years and competing for the last two. I am 55 years young and an artist; my Caribbean-style murals and paintings are sold worldwide. I have been an avid kiteboarder for many years and started stand-up paddleboarding for those no-wind days. I quickly became a complete “addict” of the sport and started training almost daily with my husband, Bill Kraft. We do lots of long downwinders and interval training together. I have been on the podium after every race I entered, and just got a sponsorship from Boga Paddleboards. The Painkiller Cup is my favorite race; it is a unique experience to race as a team and be in that amazing area of the Caribbean. We’ve raced the PKC twice now, and we finished in second place both times. My team for the Painkiller Cup included my husband and Garrett Fletcher from Florida, two great athletes. We also loved having our friends Lee Steiner and Julie, his wife, be our support boat and crew. This race should be on every racer’s bucket list. Thank you, Andy, for creating this format; it is worth every minute, even when it gets painful. In the end, you know you’ll be at the Soggy Dollar on the beautiful white sandy beach. For me, being on the water is the best therapy in the world. It is the place where I feel most at peace and connected to the earth. I would encourage any woman to pick up a paddle and give paddleboarding a chance. It is an amazing, challenging and fun sport that will make you discover the world from a different angle, especially if you want to try racing or surfing. Don’t look back; have fun, get in shape and push your limits. I am 55 years old and have never been in better shape. I love the challenge every day, and it can be great for families to practice together. I am an ambassador for the sport of SUP and would love to see it grow even more. It is such an escape and can be done on oceans, rivers, lakes and any other body of water, inland and on the coast. There are no limits to where you can go. 58

kristin thomas 3RD PLACE FINISHER

Team Caribbean Paddle Age: 52 From: Laguna Beach, CA Although I’m a native Californian and have lived here my entire 52 years, SUP has given me a way to travel to amazing destinations. I meet fantastic people and live an active water lifestyle that I would have never expected to be able to enjoy at this stage in my life. I’m Kristin Thomas from Laguna Beach, California, and I’m a SUP junkie. Living in a year-round paddle area, one of the hubs of stand-up, feeds my addiction. I’ve been in well over 100 races and have been racing two to three times a month since 2010. At this time in my life, I have a very flexible schedule. With all three of my “babies” in their 20s and a husband of almost 30 years (who isn’t retired yet), SUP allows me more time on the water. A couple of years ago I put my educational consulting business on hold after being asked to launch the SUPIA (Stand Up Paddle Industry Association). Working and playing in the world of stand-up paddleboarding has been a blessing. I get on the water two or three times a week, work out on the land or at the gym once or twice for cross-training, and I’m still trying to fit more SUP surfing into my schedule. Since I was starting off 2015 in Florida, I decided a trip to the beautiful islands was “on my way home” from the Surf Expo Trade Show I was attending there. For almost the entire five years of my SUP racing, I’ve been trying to figure out how to get to the British Virgin Islands for this race or its longer predecessor, the five-day HIHO. It’s such a fun and interesting format to have a relay requiring two guys and a gal. I got super-lucky with my teammates: two great, French-speaking guys who are fast paddlers from Guadalupe Island. We set up Team Caribbean Paddler via Facebook. I had met one of my teammates the year before in Puerto Rico but had never met our other partner. I’m so proud of our third place finish. The overall fantastic experience of paddling a relay between two islands made it so memorable. While Mother Nature didn’t give us the conditions we had hoped for to make the race a downwinder, the race couldn’t go wrong with the clear warm water, gorgeous scenery and Soggy Dollar finish. Andy Morrell, who previously ran the HIHO for 20 years and now runs the Painkiller Cup, was both generous and a huge help in figuring out the logistics of lodging, chase boats, borrowing a board, etc. It was an amazing weekend that I will not soon forget. Some women may not need the excitement of a Caribbean destination or the adrenaline rush of racing, or even the camaraderie of being on a team, but I can say there is truly nothing like the rush—the overwhelming joy—of gliding over the top of the ocean or any body of water and feeling connected to nature. Stand-up paddling in general offers something for everyone and racing is a true “best of” activity that brings together fitness, nature, community and so much more in a positive context. I encourage everyone to give it a try! S A M ATA M A G . C O M

jessicarando 4TH PLACE FINISHER

Team Freedom City Surf Shop Age: 31 From: Mississauga, Ontario, Canada I have lived right on the water my entire life. I have competed in various paddle sports including sprint canoe, dragon boat and most recently SUP, and have had the honor of representing Canada in competition in two of those. I am a Starboard National Team Rider and for this race my sponsors (Starboard SUP, Kayak Sport Canada, Ocean Rodeo) helped me get there. Racing has been the gateway for many other amazing things in my life, including meeting my wonderful husband. I started up my own business in paddle sports instruction called The Paddle Coach, which now focuses almost exclusively on SUP! I feel very fortunate to have been able to take a passion and make it my life’s work! Outside of competition, I am an avid outdoors enthusiast and spend much of my time outdoors and in the wilderness finding new places to explore and new lakes and waterways to paddle on. From the day I first tried stand-up; I fell in love! (I tried it for the first time in Hawaii on my honeymoon… pretty fitting.) When I found out there was a competition scene, naturally, I bought myself a race board and started training specifically for SUP! What I love about SUP is that where there is water, you can paddle! Surf, whitewater, flatwater, open ocean; it can all be explored on a SUP. I am in the gym almost daily working through a proper weight training program. Through my business, I organize and run a spring SUP training camp down in Florida every year so when I’m not coaching, I am out on the water doing my training. What most appealed to me about the Painkiller Cup was the time of year, the format of the race, the course itself and the opportunity to paddle in a stunning location I had never been to before with some incredible paddlers! Pretty much EVERYTHING appealed to me about the Cup! Being from Canada, I liked that the race was in January, which happens to fall right in the middle of the looooong Canadian winter. This was a great opportunity to keep my race skills fresh and break up the monotony of indoor winter training. I found it incredibly rejuvenating and motivating to be on the water at a time of the year when I am typically frozen off of it (literally frozen off… there are areas of the Great Lakes with 10 feet of ice. Yikes!). I loved the format, the three-person relay, as it brought a whole new element to race strategy and made the whole race just a blast (I had an amazing team and crew!). My team and I were particularly excited about the course as we knew that this particular route could find us in some pretty epic downwind conditions! Although the water conditions were relatively flat this year, I’m hoping to make it to this event again to experience the “Christmas winds” the locals speak of and the conditions that they bring! My team, Freedom City Surf, placed fourth and we were quite happy with our result. One of the things I found most challenging was racing during my off-season. While I enjoyed racing during my winter, it’s also quite a challenge when you are in a phase of your training that does not focus on competition. As a team, we likely would have changed our board choice to better suit the conditions. Since the race route typically sees rough waters, we chose a board that excels in those conditions as opposed to the flats that we saw this year. I would like to give huge thanks to the wonderful people of Freedom City Surf on the Island of St. Croix, who took me in like family and made this whole event possible for our team! 60

5TH PLACE FINISHER Team Chicken Gun Ya Age: 39 From: St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

My name is Gail Walker and I live in St. Thomas, USVI. I am married, and we have four dogs. I have been paddling for six years. I am the director of a small grant-making foundation. I was first introduced to prone paddling when visiting the North Shore of Oahu. A friend of mine took me on a downwind paddle, and I was hooked. My husband and I tried stand-up shortly thereafter and loved it so much that we decided to enter a race. I don’t have a training regime; I just try to stay active and push myself in whatever sport I am doing. My current favorites are surfing, SUP surfing, swimming, sailing and paddling. I plan on getting back into bike riding, soccer and home workouts. I prefer not to be in the gym. Since being introduced to SUP, we have participated in many races. My favorite is downwind paddling, especially when there is wind. This year’s Painkiller Cup was pretty flat and lived up to its name. The best part of the event is the team format and mandatory switch intervals. This keeps the race exciting because teams can gain or fall behind depending on the strength of their paddlers and the rotation order. The camaraderie and cheering on your teammates add to the excitement. Our team (Greg Jaudon, Eric Walker and me) finished fifth. The first rotation was the most exciting for me. We were clustered with two other teams, and there wasn’t much space for boats to jockey into position for the switch. Greg was paddling like a maniac, and we misjudged how fast he was moving. By the time I jumped in the water to make the transition, he was almost past me. I tried too hard to get up quickly and paddle—when I stood up, I lost my balance and landed on my butt on the board. It was a great race, and I am praying for honking winds at the 2016 Painkiller Cup! The Virgin Islands lend themselves to fantastic downwind paddling, and this race course is set in the perfect spot to give it the potential to become the best downwind race in the Caribbean. And the race course is beautiful! Being on the water is my happy place. It allows me to forget about everything else and focus on what I am doing at that moment: paddling. It keeps me in the present. More than anything, I like to paddle with a group of friends—what makes that even better is downwind paddling with cranking wind! I love the friendly competition and camaraderie. For anyone interested in SUP racing, I would say push yourself harder than you thought possible. You might even puke from pushing yourself, but if you do, then you win, because you are pushing 110 percent. Without failure, you will never succeed. Keep in mind that everyone starts somewhere. Every person on the start line has either been in your shoes or is also at her first race. Have fun and stay positive with your fellow competitors because without them you wouldn’t have anyone to race against. You can get better by racing the clock, but that is not as fun as sharing the race with someone else. S A M ATA M A G . C O M

T As told by Amie Zamudio Photos by Paul Ensyde

Two years ago I began my biggest battle. I am a single mother of two children and I am currently battling breast cancer. I found my first lump on Christmas morning. After a failed lumpectomy, I went back for a bilateral mastectomy, did a year and a half of Tamoxifen treatments, and am now on a new series of monthly infusions at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. I have good days and bad days, but the one thing my oncologist emphasized is my need to exercise daily. Well, on one particular day, I pushed myself to go on a walk that wasn’t turning out so great. I kept saying to myself, “Just make it home.” When I turned into my driveway, this man stopped me and asked if I was Amie. I thought, “Oh gosh, what does he want? I’m about to be sick.” He said he just dropped something off for me and asked if I would like to see it. And there she was on my front porch, Miss Pink Rivy. All shiny, bright and colorful. I almost fainted and kept waiting for someone from The Ellen Degeneres Show to pop out from around the corner. I completely forgot that I was feeling sick and must have hugged Joey, the delivery guy, a hundred times. I truly couldn’t believe it. He didn’t know who the board was from either, so I kept saying, “Is Ellen here? This is something she would do!” On a side note, Joey shared his story of helping his girlfriend beat melanoma. He truly was an angel that day! As we opened the packaging, we found this letter from my two best friends, Jackie Rimel and Erinn Steingold:

You are not born with strength and courage; they become part of you like a coping mechanism. Unfortunately, they are derived from things like trauma or loss but they at the same time teach us things such as compassion and loyalty and devotion. These are the characteristics that begin to emanate from you and begin to attract others to you because they want to feel the warmth and light that comes from you. You don’t suddenly become surrounded by great friends because of what you look like; you attract great friends because of who you are on the inside and what you put out into the world. Well 30 years ago you had something special that obviously created a lifelong friendship between you, Jaq and me. We may have all gone our own way for periods of time, had ups and downs, done silly things, stupid things that Jaq didn’t approve of (shhh). But one thing was a given!!!! At the drop of a hat, we knew we could pick up a phone at any moment, and it was like we never lost a minute in time. That is what great friendships are built on. Amie, you are beautiful, strong, brave and just so sweet and super-goofy. Jaq and I decided that since you found a special place in the ocean with paddling we wanted to be there with you. (Not literally.) So we wanted to make you a board with lots of love and light. A board that defined how

we see you in our eyes. So we custom-designed one for you. It’s a Race for the Cure Board with some extra love for you. You are so special and so loved. I know I’m grateful every day for the light you put into this world. I’m grateful that I have two amazing friends. I know Jaq is super-stoked on both of us too; she just isn’t a mushy person like us so she won’t say it. But her love (Jaq’s) is unending, and we have both been fortunate enough to be the recipients of that love on many occasions. But this I say with all certainty; we love you always—to the moon and back. Paddle strong and paddle hard for the cure. We got your back. Xoxo E and J. BTW the heart has yours and the kids’ initials if you look closely: “AKW.”

Drew Brophy, who is a muralist and surfboard artist, carefully painted my initials and my children’s initials, along with the pink breast cancer ribbon, the Standup for the Cure insignia and the famous Riviera “R.” I just stare at the board and know I will never give up on beating cancer. The board is my strength and reminder of how much love and support surrounds me. My persistent friend Erinn got this all done in a week! I have never felt so loved in my life! About a week later, another giant package came from Riviera: a pink plaid paddle, cover, Riviera roof racks and tie-downs, and an assortment of hats. I have so much gratitude for Riviera Paddlesurf. Their generosity and determination to get the job done has been overwhelming and very heartfelt.

I cannot express my gratitude to every person who has affected my life through this. Being on the water makes me feel better. I can feel sick but as soon as I’m out there, I feel better, happier. It is so healing. The SUP world is so blessed with so many soulful and kind people. It really is a culture of its own.

BALI

In the past 10 years, I have lived in 16 homes, with hundreds of roommates, both Island of the Gods American and international. I have traveled through 21 countries, learning more than I ever thought possible. I realized that life makes the most sense when you follow your inner energy, return to the essentials and find the good in each moment. And that moment I stepped off the plane and into paradise, I knew I was about to experience something special. By Nikki Beck nikkib-free.com

Bali is a tropical island in Indonesia filled with friendly faces, rolling rice fields, delicious fresh food, a diverse shoreline and numerous villages to discover. It has something for everyone. The rich Balinese culture, combined with the eclectic communities of ex-pats, delivers the perfect vibe to let go and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. If you enjoy stepping away from constant distractions and into pure bliss, Bali is just the spot for you. It offers a little something for everyone. I recommend packing light and traveling all over the island. Located near the equator, Bali is appealing with its tropical climate. Temperatures typically range from the upper 60s to the mid-90s all year-round. There are two seasons: The rainy season, which starts in October and runs to March, brings heavier rain and

higher humidity. Luckily, the rain usually only lasts about an hour or two, creating the perfect pocket of time for an afternoon siesta, while still leaving a few hours of light to get back out and play. The drier, more popular time of the year is June through September. It rains less often and the humidity is lower, attracting more tourists. I’m a firm believer in not over-planning a trip; show up and find the way along the way. But during the busier season, booking accommodations is a good idea, especially if you prefer a bit more control. If you have the heart of a travel gypsy or if you are a free-spirited traveler, there are many options around the island that are not online, which may be a better value for what you are seeking. Stay in a guesthouse for a night or two and you will get all the insight you need.

Whether you’re a water baby or a mountain climber, Bali can provide that adrenaline rush. Let’s start with our favorite, stand-up paddleboarding. Bali’s vast coastline offers plenty of places to paddle. It just depends on what you want and the time of year. Bali’s shoreline is predominantly some variation of swell, with everything from beginner waves to double overhead. So if you love to SUP surf, there are plenty of options. I had the pleasure of paddling with Jankie, the owner of Bali Stand Up Paddle. Their headquarters are located at Villa Puri Ayu in Sanur, Bali. Sanur is a laidback beach town with many shops, restaurants and accommodations, all within walking distance of one another, making it a great spot to meet other paddlers and share your stories of the day. Jankie has sought

FEATURE out the best paddle spots on the island. Here you can flatwater paddle and participate in a SUP yoga class, as well as SUP surf. Sanur’s beach is a couple-mile stretch, filled with great little fish shacks, beach bars, and comfy lounge chairs to kick back and enjoy a fresh coconut. The reef break is about 500 meters offshore and can kick up some long barrels to ride a downwinder. Water here is crystal clear with vibrant orange starfish slinking across the ocean’s floor. The reef break can be perfect for beginners: little rip, clean breaks and a shallow floor. Plus, it’s usually not too crowded. Jankie has a diverse lineup of boards available to rent for a two-hour day paddle, or for the length of your trip if you want to explore the island. Around the island, you can find some flatwater paddling, whitewater river paddling near Ubud, and, of course,

SUP surfing. Don’t forget proper surf etiquette when paddling out (if you don’t know, ask). If you are looking for your perfect offshore break, there are plenty of local boat captains who are more than willing to take you out. For the complete experience, I recommend taking a jukung, a traditional Indonesian boat. It’s a small wooden outrigger canoe decorated in bright colors, sometimes resembling a large fish. What better way to end a revitalizing day of paddling than with a yoga class on the beach? Power of Now Oasis is a gorgeous open-air bamboo hut located on Sanur’s beach. While moving through the asanas, the fresh sea breeze gently flows across your face, forcing you to sigh; you can’t help but smile. The atmosphere alone aids in creating balance and mindfulness.

After all of that, you are going to be hungry! Walk down the main street of Sanur to Bali Buda for some fabulous organic whole food. Bali Buda is a farm-toplate restaurant, one of the few that buys its produce from farms that have been under the supervision of the Bali Organic Association for the past 10 years. You can guarantee every dish you consume is from scratch, and with just the right amount of love to make it delectable and mouthwatering. Plus they have a wide variety of fresh-pressed juices, smoothies and local teas sure to quench your thirst. When most people think of Bali, one of the first things that come to mind is their renowned surf breaks around the island. The most famous is Echo Beach. Surfers from around the world come to experience the power of this break. Echo Beach, situated on

Another point of interest is the Ubud Monkey Forest. It is a nature reserve and temple where you can bring bananas to feed the monkeys, but make sure all your personal belongings are put away and you don’t have any other food with you. There are guides (strongly recommended) to show you how to feed the monkeys. If you are comfortable with them, you may even make a new friend in the form of a monkey perched on your shoulder. Stay calm and smile for the camera. The Balinese take pride in creating with their hands. You will find everything is handmade here, from their recognizable homes and intricate temples and woodcarvings to the art on their walls and the food on their plates. It’s so beautiful to go back to the simplicity of life—to create, build and enjoy. The pride and sense of satisfaction that comes from making something with your own two hands is, sadly, a lost art in most First World countries, because we have machines that can make them, right?

Canggu’s shore, is a great little surf village. You can easily rent a board on the beach. There are plenty of accommodations nearby with great restaurants and shops to enjoy after a morning on the water. Canggu is a bit spread out, making it difficult to walk everywhere, but that’s when motorbike rentals are perfect. You can rent a motorbike for around $4 a day, and most have a surf rack on the side of them. Gas is inexpensive, and you will even find it in reused Absolut Vodka bottles at convenient stores along the road. It’s a bit watered down compared to at the pump, but it’s quick and easily available. When renting a motorbike overseas, always carry a copy of your identification card, not the actual one. An essential tip is to keep the equivalent of $20 in your front pocket, just in case the local authorities stop you. To be honest, I was a bit nervous to rent a motorbike, especially since I was driving on the other side of the road. But I got my bearings and found my way around Canggu. It turned out to be the best decision I made on the trip. It’s the perfect way to explore Bali. Cruising down the rolling hills lined with rice paddies; it was an exhilarating reminder of how alive and free you are. While exploring, I found an excellent restaurant and shop called Deus Bali Temple of Enthusiasm. It carries vintage motorcycles, vintage surfboards and an interesting array of apparel. The restaurant has tables outside under the thatch roof with an open kitchen nearby. I had a large bowl of fresh local organic fruit with yogurt and honey, tea and fresh coconut juice

for $3.50. Deus also has an art gallery that hosts local artists and an outside garden that brings in local musicians.

Ubud is known for its art community, and it makes for an uplifting, “I can do this” vibe. Travelers from around the world gather in Ubud to take time for themselves, spending it in any way they choose. There are heaps of organic fresh cafes to read your new novel, plenty of classes to teach you any art you wish to pursue, find your inner light during a blissful yoga or meditation class, or assist a nonprofit organization in improving lives within the community (Keep Bali Clean and Bali Life are both incredible). Even if you are traveling alone, which I recommend everyone does at least once, this is certainly the place to do it, as you are never really alone. The energy of Ubud is like a never-ending conversation with your soulmate; it’s so beautiful, you hope it continues forever. But here in Ubud, it’s not that one favorite conversation, it’s a favorite one each day, with a new face. It is a connection to the people, to nature, to the culture of Bali. My favorite part about traveling is making genuine connections with others from around the world, being able to be open and be real because you are in paradise. Who better to be in paradise with than yourself?

John Muir said it best: “Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” There’s nothing like putting one foot in front of the other, one breath at a time, and accomplishing that goal. Bali has three main peaks, but Mount Agung and Mount Batur are summited most often. Mount Agung is Bali’s highest and holiest peak, at 3,142 meters. There are two starting points to reach the summit. One route takes between three to four hours and the other takes five to seven hours for physically fit hikers. Mount Batur, situated next to Lake Batur, is 1,717 meters high and can be summited in two to three hours. There are numerous guides and tour groups on the island. Some may be found online and others can be reached through local tour groups in Ubud. The tours are usually cheaper than what is advertised online if you approach a local tour company directly. Watching the sunrise over the Places to make those good connections: island is incredible from both peaks, but it means you will be leaving Ubud at 2 a.m. powerofnowoasis.com Typically, the tour will provide transportation balibuda.com from your accommodation to the base, a tour guide, breakfast at the peak, and then deuscafe.com.au/deus-bali a relaxing stop at one of the many Luwak paon-bali.com Coffee Plantations. bali-standuppaddle.org balilife.org baliartworkshop@yahoo.com

ALL STAR ASTRO DRIVE

ASTRO YOGA CROSSOVER

ELITE TOURING

Extremely versatile flat-water paddleboard. An ideal entry into the waves. A long-time favorite in the range, chosen for its versatility and all-round fun, the Drive is used by all paddlers looking for flat water exploring, fitness or surf. The bottom configuration of a single concave forward moving through to heavy vee in the mid-section, with deep concaves running through to vee in the tail, create speed and maneuverability with a crisp and lively rail-to-rail feel.

Take the gym to the water! The perfect board to blend your yoga sessions with your fitness workouts. The Crossover has a narrower shape for the most efficient glide and speed when paddling. It is ideal for faster and higher intensity sprint paddling, while having comfortable stability for turning and performing exercises on the board.

Extra fast, real stable and great tracking. The Elite Touring proved a breakthrough in gliding performance for a board at this length. The slender nose section pierces water while volume distribution in rails and concave bottom shape provides the glide and stability. It feels light and nimble, has great glide and is simply fun to ride. The aft fin box supports great tracking. Equipped with two bungee tie downs to carry extra gear and four FCS inserts for installing lights or GPS. It has a round vee double concave midsection to deep vee concave tail.

DIMENSIONS: 10’5” x 30”

This board comes equipped with a comfortable EVA shoulder carry handle, paddle holder, Double Action pump and rolling bag. DIMENSIONS: 11’2” x 32”

DIMENSIONS: 11’6” x 29.5”

The choice for a variety of conditions! The 2015 All Stars have more width up front in combination with more pronounced bottom concaves; this increases the stability and allows us to ride more narrow, faster boards. A benefit of a more narrow hull other than less friction, is that the paddle comes closer to the board and creates a more efficient power transfer also allowing for more strokes per side. The lower tail and nose rocker improves acceleration into bumps and makes it especially easy to connect to the next wave. The flat-water speed is also noticeably improved with the enhanced rocker line which creates a longer, effective waterline. 2015 All Star Carbon Race boards have the orange logos while the Glass Technology is green. HULL PADDLER

Extra length and extra width make this board perfect for first time stand-up paddlers that need extra volume. Performance beyond comparison packed into a board with enough volume for everyone. Fun in flat-water, big and small waves.

A fuller nose and outline make the 9’0” All Arounder model the “fun board of performance stand-up paddle surf boards. Performance rocker makes this model an excellent entry level board for stand-up paddlers transitioning from a longer high performance board to a shorter, looser model. The wider nose also makes the board more forgiving when taking off on a wave.

These new Hull Paddlers were designed to take one of our most popular models and make them better. The same stable easy paddling features are still there but an advanced bottom curve allows for even better surfing capabilities. We’ve also added the Quad fin box option so you can use a wider variety of fin combinations.

ENDURO Flat-water/Surf

HIGH ASPECT Flat-water/Race

A well balanced blade design with a medium dihedral providing great stability and good power. Available in five sizes tailored to different power needs and designed as a multipurpose paddle for waves, flat water and racing. It is our most popular blade range due to its versatility and light feel. Sean Poynter, Izzi Gomez and Zane Schweitzer’s choice for wave riding.

A longer, narrower blade with a flatter profile, which combines efficient power delivery with a forgiving feel, perfect for racing, the choice of champions. The High Aspect blade is designed with narrow outline, reduced blade angle and modified foil profile. The shape offers less resistance per stroke for a similar size blade, resulting in better thrust and higher speed over distance. It provides more power for less effort and is much less fatiguing over distance than many traditional teardrop shaped blades. Connor Baxter’s choice for racing. Carbon Superflex blades feature orange graphic and orange ABS edge while Tiki Tech blades come in blue, pink, green, and orange graphic options with matching ABS edge.

EJ SERIES PADDLE

RACE PADDLE

RIVIERA “BUMP” 8 & 8.5

The EJ Series carbon fiber paddles have been developed over the last six years with substantial shaping and testing by SUP veteran EJ Johnson. Here are some of our favorites featuring laid carbon fiber, an ergonomic handle covered in EVA foam, round shaft and customizable length.

Designed by one of the first SUP racers on the West Coast, EJ Johnson, these performance carbon fiber race paddles have been proved fast by elite racers such as EJ Johnson, Andrew Logreco and Ingo Rademacher. Carbon fiber construction, dihedral running down the power side and a single concave at the tip on the top make for a solid plant and fast release. Comes in three blades sizes (85, 95 and 105 square inches).

The “BUMP” features the same blade shape and shaft as our Vantage series only the “BUMP” has a carbon fiber weave added around the shaft, giving it a bumpy feel for added grip. Now standard with our “Chokehold” extended ergo handle, paddlers can choke down to amplify torque to their stroke. The “BUMP” paddle has a wet sand finished to add even more grip, save weight, and give it a stealth look.
