PUA’ENA POINT BEACH PARK, HALEIWA OAHU, HAWAII Within walking distance of Oahu’s Haleiwa town, Pua’ena Point is a hidden North Shore gem that is quite popular among surfers. The location is nice and shallow, making it ideal for beginners learning how to paddleboard or surf when the waves aren’t too high, but when the surf is up, it’s for experts only. FROM THE EDITOR
essence noun | essence 1. the very essence of economics: quintessence, soul, spirit, nature; core, heart, crux, nucleus, substance; principle, fundamental quality, sum and substance, warp and woof, reality, actuality; informal nitty-gritty. We have all experienced it. A source of frustration in our job, in our relationships, in ourselves or in life in general. For true stability and balance of the mind, essence needs to emerge. It must be a seamless, unimpeded flow of energy and spirit. True essence is beyond ego. Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes that can’t be resisted but must be embraced. You need to find that sacred ground where body, mind and soul connect. Being on the water can bring you there, take you there and change your perspective. Being on the water is beautiful; it’s a thing of grace and strength. It can be healing and restorative too. It defines a lifestyle. This is the essence of flow. In this issue you will see women who are defining the essence of flow. They are women of beauty, grace and strength. Grab your board and paddle, and leave the headphones and music behind. Listen and feel what surrounds you on the water and discover what is already within you, waiting to be defined. LUCY LUCILLE

NATURAL FIGHTERS
BOOSTING YOUR DEFENSES In an effort to keep healthy people healthy and the not-so-healthy climbing the ladder out of symptom-ville, we must be proactive in regards to our immunity and not wait for things to sideline us from living an active, fun life.
Long before the use of antibiotics reached an all-time high, people used food as medicine and a trusted way to prevent infections and build strong immunity. Now is the time to be more mindful of using as many foods and herbs as we can to strengthen our body’s ecology and become a “no-host environment” for harmful bacteria and microbes that set up shop inside us and wreak havoc. This list highlights some bright stars within reach that contribute to a stronger defense, keeping us in the game of life at a high level and pursuing our passions.
RAW APPLE CIDER VINEGAR This enzyme-rich tonic contains properties that are both antibiotic and antiseptic. Apple cider vinegar supports an alkaline pH level and aids in digestion. Use it on veggies or salad, or drink daily with lemon water in a shot o’ health!
OREGANO OIL This powerful compound works against infectioncausing bacteria. Carvacrol, the oil in oregano, has been widely used to prevent digestive infections and keep bad microbe levels in check. Look for the oil in small vials. Add a few drops under your tongue, or add to soups or broths for more immunity-building power.
RAW HONEY A natural antimicrobial, raw honey is enzyme-rich and a wonderful way to boost immunity by taking small amounts weekly. Hydrogen peroxide is released from an enzyme in honey that helps to fight infection. Source raw, local brands to ensure high quality.

TURMERIC This deep-hued root of oranges, golds and yellows contain some of the most potent immune-boosting compounds around. Curcumin, the active component of the root, is praised for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory powers, something the people of India have known for centuries. Use in soups, curry dishes, smoothies and tonic juice blends. TIP: Add a small amount of black pepper for optimal absorption.
GARLIC Garlic contains allicin, a germ-fighting compound to help against colds, infections, parasites and yeast infections. Use both raw and cooked garlic in many recipes to boost immunity, circulation and heart health.
GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT GSE has been found to be an effective fighter against many forms of bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. High in antioxidants, alkalizing compounds and digestive aids, this easy-to-find extract packs a punch and boosts immunity. It’s a great travel companion when on the road. Add to your water intake or directly under the tongue.
COCONUT OIL Antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral by nature, coconut oil has finally entered the mainstream, with people using it for everything from cooking to smoothies to topical treatments. It’s truly a gift from nature as a versatile, healthy fat source that supports thyroid function, proper blood sugar and blood-lipid levels, brain-nerve function and immunity!
FERMENTED FOODS From artisan sauerkrauts and kvass (fermented veggie juice) to kefirs and beyond, these probiotic-rich items have made a comeback and the timing couldn’t be better! These wonderfully tangy foods feed our gut with much-needed good bacteria that keep levels in check, help digestion, and boost circulation and B vitamins for energy! One of my favorite products for overall immunityboosting power and full system defense against bad microbes that want to attack is Kung Fu Tonic, a little gem in a dark amber bottle (kungfutonic.com). The creators are SoCal surfers, yogis and all-around grounded people that use only the best-sourced organic ingredients. Their intent is to deeply nourish your immune system, delivering sound protection and keeping you in the game while you’re globe-trotting to your next adventure!
INGREDIENTS: ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (CA) HEIRLOOM GARLIC (CA) ORGANIC ONION (CA) ORGANIC GINGER (HI) ORGANIC HORSERADISH (CA) ORGANIC CAYENNE PEPPER (CA) SEA SALT (UT) OREGANO OIL (NM) Don’t wait to begin boosting your defenses. TIPS CASI RYNKOWSKI
BATTLE ROPES There is something gratifying about smacking a heavy length of rope on the ground during a workout session. This is called Battle Ropes and it’s a unique way to train for power and endurance while instilling mental toughness. If you are not familiar with this primitive exercise tool, it’s simply a PHOTOS BY RACHEL MCCARTY long, thick piece of rope, measuring anywhere from 20-50 feet in length and 1-2 inches in diameter, affixed to an anchor. The goal is to send a wave through the rope using explosive, full-body movements. It’s a huge metabolic demand and calorie incinerator. Battle Ropes training provides a host of benefits for the SUP paddler. It builds strength, core stability, explosive power and endurance, all of which are required in SUP racing, distance paddling and SUP surfing. Battle Ropes also trains the neuromuscular system by applying force that begins at the core and extends through your body. This type of training is important for anyone who wishes to improve their athletic performance.
Single Wave 1. Wrap your rope around a strong anchor point so that the two ends are even.
2. Grasp the two ends of the rope, one in each hand. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hinge forward slightly at your hips.
3. Begin moving your arms up and down, forcing a wave through the length of the rope. Repeat for a timed period or repetitions to failure. Double-Rope Smack 1. Wrap your rope around a strong anchor point so that the two ends are even.
2. Grasp the two ends of the rope, one in each hand. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hinge forward slightly at your hips.
3. Move your arms above your head, then bring them down in front of you, smacking the rope on the ground. This should force a double wave to move through the rope. Repeat for a timed period or reps until failure. Casi Rynkowski is an AFAA-certified personal trainer, ACA level 2 SUP instructor and SUP fit instructor for Eastern Mountain Sports School. She’s also a Werner Team Paddler, BIC Ambassador and Virus International Ambassador. When she’s not working, you’ll find her surfing, paddling downwinders or gearing up for a long-distance paddle trip. Connect with Casi at crynkowski@gmail.com and on Facebook and Instagram. 30

SIDE PLANK
VASISTHASANA One of the five key components of an H2YO SUP Yoga class is called “yogi’s choice.” This is time to get creative and playful on the board. Students are encouraged to experiment with poses they may be curious about and would like to try on the water. Side plank, or Vasisthasana, is a pose that transitions safely from the studio to the water. Try these different variations and go as far as you want to get wet!
1. Start in tabletop or on all fours. Slide the right leg back and roll onto the outside edge of your right foot so that your toes are pointed toward the left side of the board.
1
2. First modification: Raise your left arm and bring your gaze to your hand or to the horizon.
3. Second modification: Extend your top leg toward the end of your board with ankles stacked one on top of the other. You can use the top foot to help stabilize you by pressing your toes down onto the board.
2
4. Third modification: Slowly lift your top leg and bend at the knee, placing your top foot on your bottom calf or thigh. Try and hold your gaze or your drishti (focus point) on the horizon or something that is not moving. Vasisthasana challenges your core and increases shoulder strength. It also improves your balance. You can add more modifications to this pose. Try floating the top leg up to meet your hand (Padagustastana) or step back into Wild Thing. Have fun with your own variation! Florida native Julie Roach is a H2YO Yoga & Fitness Trainer and BIC SUP Ambassador. She has more than 800 hours of yoga training, is a certified Level 2 SUP Instructor and Instructor Trainer through the ACA (American Canoe Association), and is lifeguard-certified through the American Red Cross in first aid and CPR. TIPS AMBER SHADWICK
NEW TO SUP YOGA:
CONSIDERATIONS FOR PRACTICE New SUP yoga students should always consider the instructor’s training, expertise and teaching methods. More importantly, new practicers should always be encouraged to honor their own physical limitations. Be mindful that any type of physical activity that challenges the body should be practiced with SUP-erior attention and individual self-care. Body awareness and respect for physical boundaries are essential elements for any SUP yoga practice. If you lack understanding of personal limitations, your SUP practice may become unsafe. Therefore, in light of inspiration to help develop a safer SUP yoga experience, honor these suggestions.
1. Adopt a beginner’s mind. You would not attend an advanced martial arts class without having prior knowledge and/or experience. Yoga on the board may look relatively simple, but it’s not. Be sure to start with a series of land-based yoga classes. Beginner classes will help to introduce you to yoga basics. Intermediate and advanced classes will inspire a fuller challenge. Remember to build a solid foundation of yoga knowledge, alignment, body awareness and comfort before you leap onto the board and attempt a more advanced asana.
2. Listen to your body. Just as in any yoga class, your body, not the teacher, is the true guru for what is best PHOTO BY DENMAN BENNETT OR DENMANBENNETT.COM
for you. Listening to your body and honoring its voice is key to a safe SUP practice. If something doesn’t feel appropriate for you, ease out of the posture. If something feels unmanageable, you’re pushing too hard. If your body feels like it needs a break, listen to it. Remember, yoga is all about self-care. If you need to rest, take a breather or embrace being on the water by dipping in and cooling off!
3. Do your own pose, not your neighbor’s. Yoga is not a competition. For most of us, the mind is quick to overrule the body. So if the person next to you strikes a pose with her feet behind her head or is in some outrageous balance variation on her board, you may want to try to do the same thing. Recall that yoga at its essence is about listening to and honoring the body. The right way to practice a pose is to practice in a way that is true to you. Honor where your body is in that particular posture and moment. Tune in, stay present and achieve your own SUPer pose!
4. Acknowledge gratitude. Seek gratitude in every posture. Accept the balance between finding comfort in discomfort. Remember that the grateful place is often found within the posture where you are feeling a stretch but your muscles are actively engaged and working hard.
5. Pick the right instructor and approach for you. When it comes to practicing and teaching SUP yoga, it is not a one-size-fits-all situation. Every teacher will vary in approach, style, experience and training. If one does not resonate with you, be sure to keep an open mind and try another.
6. Speak up, be honest and be heard. In regards to injuries and/or physical limitations, do not be shy. Inform your instructor prior to your SUP class if you have any concerns. If the instructor isn’t able to offer specific feedback related to your injury, inquiry or concerns, this might be an indication that the class is not a good fit for you.
7. There is no perfect practice. The practice of yoga is ancient tradition. Every time you step on the board you will embody a different experience. Be gentle and celebrate your progress. Keep in mind yoga is called a “practice” and not a “perfection.” Amber Shadwick, owner of FITSIDE, is a nationally recognized fitness and wellness professional. She has developed the SUP Yoga program at Hilton Head Island’s premier outfitter, Outside Hilton Head. As a BIC SUP Ambassador, she inspires balance and fluidity as the roots for enhanced well-being. Three Island Women Connected by the Sea The Hawaiian Islands have long been thought of as the Pacific’s paradise and a unique place on earth. On these islands, known as the birthplace of surfing, the lively waters separate the men from the boys. But modern-day Hawaii is also a place where women — such as Ehiku Rademacher, Jenny Lee and Mariko Strickland Lum—play. It’s not just a lifestyle; it’s a sanctuary that keeps them solid in mind, body and soul. PHOTO BY ERIK HAKA

Life in the Middle of the Pacific: Ehiku Rademacher For Ehiku Rademacher, the lifestyle couldn’t be any better. She grew up in the small town of Hilo on Hawaii Island, and today, she enjoys island culture on the North Shore of Oahu. “I was surfing the local breaks of Honoli’i and Wai’uli and going to school at Waiakea High, then we moved to Oahu and I finished my senior year at Pearl City High. After graduation I decided I wanted to move to a spot called Rocky Point on the North Shore, a house back from the beach. I was working at the famous Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck to pay the rent. I was only 17, so no one wanted to hire me at the restaurants. Those were the good old days for me. I remember getting to surf there with only my neighbors and it was perfect. Fourteen years later the North Shore has changed from being a sleepy town during the summer months and a circus during winter—now it seems to bustle daily.” When the need calls, she listens. She finds a connection on the water with her two boys, Peanut and Pohaku, and her husband, former General Hospital actor Ingo, who has become an accomplished paddleboard racer. They rarely venture to the city of Honolulu unless it’s for a race, which usually happens from spring through the summer. “Out in the ‘country,’ we have such awesome conditions and water to stay fit year-round. Haleiwa stream is where we go to put in our flatwater miles when the surf is too large for SUP surfing. During the summer, Ingo and I take turns doing downwind runs. It takes a little coordination, but it works. One of us takes the car and drives to either Sunset or Dead Man’s Curve. If you are feeling like putting in some real miles, you start from Turtle Bay and paddle six to seven miles downwind to Three Tables. You walk your board home, or ride your bike, or run back to get the car, and switch. It is an excellent training exercise.”

On quality family time “We try to do as much as we can as a family. It gets hard, but I think being in business for ourselves allows us the freedom of being able to drop what we are doing and take advantage of our surroundings. We are always hiking with our boys and paddling with them on our boards. If they don’t feel like being on the boards, we take turns sitting on the beach while the other paddles or surfs.” Of Mahiku, their new apparel store in Haleiwa Town, she says, “Ingo and I are always working; we start as soon as we wake up and go into the night. We started our brand because we saw the need for leggings in watersports and have come to realize how awesome it is. There are women who come up to me and say now they can go to the beach, and that makes my sleep at night, knowing the time I put into it is worth it. We allow every woman the opportunity to get out on the water and feel good about it. Women who have not been to the ocean in years put on our pants and go for a swim because they are not worried about having to fit in a swimsuit. Other women have sensitive skin; now that they wear Mahiku UPF 50+ leggings, they are SUP or canoe paddling and entering SUP races. That kind of response is what makes me go and helps me in the drawing room.” “Being able to create is what I love, so I don’t think of it as difficult or hard; it isn’t hard to do what fires your passion. We have an amazing manufacturer in California who is so professional that it makes it easy to create our line. This year we are adding kids’ and men’s lines to our lineup and are very excited about it. So far we have stuck with women but have had so many requests to create something for men and kids that we just have to.”
On juggling business, health and family “Oh yes, if you don’t love something, I think it would not work. We love what we do! Love the creating, love the nurturing and building that we have to do constantly. We are both active people so owning an activewear line makes sense because we are always in our gear, and now our kids are always in Mahiku. It’s perfect!!” Flowing as husband and wife “Ingo plays a huge role in getting me on the water. He has become my board caddy. I can tell him what I want to do, whether it’s surfing or paddling, and what the conditions will be, and he runs outside to get my equipment ready and on the car. He is amazing! I never have to ask; he just does it. And, believe me, it doesn’t go unappreciated.” “Ingo and I and the kids have to stay active and fit or we become hard to be around. The ocean and mountains cleanse us and give us a refreshing focus for the rest of the day. It allows us to realize that there is something larger than us and our little problems throughout the day are meaningless. It’s a reboot the entire family gets on a daily basis.” On inspiration “I’m inspired by many things—nature, and how beautiful and powerful it is; people, and how strong yet vulnerable we can be; travel, and how it helps me appreciate our world and all who live here. My family inspires me daily: Ingo for his passion in everything he does, Peanut for his ability to build something out of nothing using his vast imagination, and Pohaku for always trying to make everyone laugh. I am very blessed with this life.”

Some Waikiki Love: Jennifer Lee Jennifer Lee grew up a true Waikiki Beach surfer girl, living a bike ride down the road. Her affinity for the ocean and riding reflects on her nickname, Waikiki Love. “When I was 2 years old, my dad took me surfing for the first time on Honolulu’s south shore, at a break called Ala Moana. He said after I caught that first wave I kept pointing to catch another wave. The rest was history. Growing up in Waikiki was the best. I had the most awesome group of friends. Mom would drop me off in the morning and leave me there for the day. We surfed and played while beach boys and lifeguards kept an eye out and even fed us. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to grow up the way I did and realize how much fun it was. I wouldn’t trade those experiences for the world. My parents were the most supportive a child could have. Dad was there for me every step of the way, pushing me to be the best. And Mom picked me up every time I wasn’t living up to Dad’s expectations. As bad as that sounds, it balanced out well. At the end of the day, if I felt like I had fun, then the experience was well worth it.” “I’ve been very fortunate to travel the world because of surfing. The global experiences I’ve had are truly priceless. There is a whole other world out there for people to see and experience; I am thankful for what this world has to offer. Traveling to places such as the British Virgin Islands, Taiwan, Japan and the continental U.S. has afforded me the opportunity to see the various surf cultures of the world. One of my most valuable experiences was my trip to France with surfing legend Aunty Rell Sunn (RIP). Going there with a group of local Hawaii surfers and sharing our culture while living theirs made for a memorable experience for which I will forever be thankful.”
Transitioning from longboarding “The crossover from longboarding to SUP wasn’t hard at all. It made it easier because I was already familiar with the ocean and surfing. The most difficult part was having to deal with an extra piece of equipment (my paddle) whenever I would get caught on the inside. But SUP gave me the ability to enjoy the ocean in another way. As much as I love traditional surfing, using a paddle enabled me to get a different kind of workout while also having fun. The ability to balance on a surfboard using only a paddle to stay upright forced me to use different muscles from my core and my upper body. It made my surf sessions a lot more enjoyable because I knew the benefit would be twofold.”
“My 11-year-old daughter, Lilly, enjoys the ocean. She hasn’t taken to surfing as much as I did at her age, but she loves to snorkel and fish. She’ll even surf now and then with the other kids, but what she’s really into is basketball. I’m stoked that she has a passion for excelling in it. She’s progressing at a rate that blows my mind. I love it.” “Makoa, my fiancé’s son, is a duplicate of his dad. He loves to surf and is doing well SUP surfing. He also loves to canoe paddle and be at the beach. Lilinoe, his daughter, is our teenager. She’s very active in sports such as canoe paddling and track. She’s also a straight-A student, which I am very proud of.”
So as much as I know school and work are important, MY FAMILY AND ENJOYING LIFE IN THE OCEAN are my reasons for getting through the tough days.
On juggling life “Being a single mom and spending quality time with both my daughter and fiancé and his kids is cool because we’re both water people. It can all be very chaotic at times, but I usually just take things day by day, and it somehow works out. Luckily, I have the support of my family and my awesome fiancé. I wouldn’t be able to do the things I do without their support. Honestly, I feel like we live in a society where things are constantly at a fast-forward pace, and now and then you have to know how to come back and enjoy the things that matter. There have been a few very important people who showed me how to live life to the fullest and that’s an important facet of how I live. So as much as I know school and work are important, my family and enjoying life in the ocean are my reasons for getting through the tough days. All I can do is be a role model for my kids and show them how to live an active, healthy lifestyle while also being responsible people in our communities.”
Advice for women “I find that most people want to try SUP but are unfamiliar with the equipment. Most women are concerned about carrying a board that is too big and cumbersome. Thankfully, new technology makes boards stronger and lighter so people can handle the equipment and enjoy the sport. I encourage women to get out there and try paddling. Surfing and the ocean have given me so much happiness and it’s there for everyone to enjoy. Having a board and paddle gives practically anyone the capability to step into the sea. When you let yourself become surrounded by the power of nature, it captivates your soul and brings a sense of joy that you never knew existed. It’s simple: Paddle out and just let life happen!”

Kaua`i Life: Mariko Strickland Lum Mariko Strickland Lum lives an ocean life. How could she not, living in one of the most beautiful places on the planet and with a father who is a hard-core surfer? This woman knows the Kaua’i life of pure connection with the ocean. “I’ve been connected to the ocean since I was a baby. Growing up on Kaua’i made that a given, especially with a dad who traveled the world surfing and ended up establishing roots on the Garden Isle. After attending college in California, I am happy to be living back home on Kaua’i.” “I can’t imagine having a better childhood. People think of Kaua’i as laid-back and slow, but life for me is quite busy. Between working two jobs, starting a new business, building a house, training and traveling, I’m always on the go. ‘Work hard, play hard’ is my motto. I always find time to enjoy the island life of hiking, surfing, mountain biking, paddling, fishing and, of course, having backyard pa’ina’s [gatherings] with family and friends.”
Life on Kaua’i “I feel like it is a crucial time for our generation right now, and it is encouraging to see a lot of positive innovation. Like any community, we have our political and environmental issues, but the current result of that has been a proactive approach with more sustainable efforts ranging from new small businesses to community gardening efforts. Just like other tropical islands, we are experiencing many changes with the increasing number of affluent people moving to the island, whether to buy a home or develop private communities. Inevitably, this will and has changed the living dynamic, making Kaua’i less affordable for locals to buy a home and remain on the island. I would like to see individuals like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, who just bought 700 acres on Kaua’i, utilize his land purchase and finances to make a positive impact on our community. With more residents and interest in Kaua’i I am hopeful things will continue to positively move forward while maintaining the integrity of our island lifestyle.”

On inspirations and role models “Growing up on Kaua’I, my second big sister, Andrea Alfiler, was an all-around athletic role model for me. She used to take me surfing when I was a little grom, and I have some fun and scary memories that I will never forget. She was the first to introduce me to tandem surfing, and I got swept onto the rocks. Another time I was with her, I got pounded over and over again at a beachbreak. I was also with her my first time surfing in a wetsuit in cold water! Seems not so fun but it taught me to suck it up and have a good time no matter what! My other ocean role model was my dad, who taught me respectful surfing etiquette and ocean awareness. I remember one day my dad made me paddle around in the inside so I could practice duck-diving over and over again until I mastered it. I remember complaining that I just wanted to go out and surf, but my dad had a good point: I had to first learn how to manage my board on my own to even get out to surf. My dad is a man of principles. He always made us work for things and he taught me the concept that fundamentals are essential for anything you do in life. I now realize the goal of my dad’s lesson was not to torture me but to teach me the skills it takes to obtain that ‘surf stoke’ on my own, in surfing and in all aspects of life. For this I am forever grateful.” On marriage and life “My husband used to be a professional bodyboarder, so we joke that we like to do the things everyone hates on in the lineup: ‘boogieboarding’ and stand-up surfing! My husband is also an avid spear fisherman and often brings home fresh fish for dinner. He is a Kaua’i County Lifeguard and all-around great waterman. We are really excited to be crossing the Moloka’i Channel as a SUP relay team this year!”
On life philosophies, connecting and the essence of flow “The ocean and all that it has to offer definitely helps to keep me grounded. I would have to say the balance between surfing and paddling helps. I think just surfing you can sometimes get caught up in the hustle of the crowd and getting the ‘wave of the day.’ For me, open ocean paddling allows you to remove yourself from the scene and just connect with the movement of the ocean. When surfing gets a little edgy, paddling reminds you what’s really important: having fun!”

Seven years ago, Kimberly James attended a SUP race out of curiosity, and was asked why she wasn’t registered to participate. Having only paddled once, on vacation in Hawaii, her experience was zilch, but rather than let that inhibit her, she embraced the challenge—event staff gave her a board and a paddle to use and encouraged her to give it a try (and, most importantly, to have fun). It was a perfect fit for a woman with a passion for the outdoors. Kimberly is now an active racer on the East Coast, residing in Wilmington, North Carolina, with her dog, Charlie.

hrough her business, Lucky Star Faux Finishes, Kimberly enlists her creative side, painting everything from decorative wall finishes and furniture to cabinetry, and works on movies (Iron Man 3) and TV shows (Sleepy Hollow). She enjoys having her own business, but it also demands her attention, so her workout time is sometimes limited. It’s understandable that she would want to get out on the water and recharge her batteries, rain or shine. She tries to run and paddleboard three to four times a week. Paddling helps her overcome stressful situations in her work life. For instance, when she has to climb high on scaffolding, she thinks of waves she has seen or crazy wind she has endured, and then thinks, “What are you scared of? You can do this!” Paddling also helps Kimberly stay physically and mentally sharp in a way that work doesn’t. SUP penetrates her life by giving her the self-confidence to go out in all conditions. “I never thought I would attempt some of the conditions I’ve paddled, but I have. That makes me feel like I can get through any challenges in day-to-day life and come out with a smile, or knowing it was tough but I did it! SUP is a source of stress relief for me. Sometimes all I need is that alone time or time with friends on the water to reflect and get some perspective, and then I am

all good. A lot of self-discovery and answers to my life have come to fruition on the water.” Kimberly’s main goal on the water is to enjoy herself and be aware. “Take in all that is around you before paddling out. I look at the weather and make the decision about where to paddle and for how long. When I get there, I determine which route to take based on the current and wind. This makes a big difference and can alter your workout and how much of a training or easygoing paddle you would like to have. Once I figure all of that, I get out there and try to focus on my technique. I may practice some sprint drills by the docks and some buoy turns as well. I also like to stop by a sandy spot to take a swim break and do a basic workout on the beach if I have time.” She loves that she can put the board on the car, travel anywhere with it and enjoy waterways anywhere. She has made many friends over the years and in the SUP community. “Everyone is always helpful, and they have a great energy about them. I am inspired by so many people in this sport; even the kids inspire me when I see them having fun together on the water or during a race. When I started, I met paddlers who raced from all over the country. They would take the time to talk with me about their experiences and goals, and their
excitement was inspiring. Their great sportsmanship and willingness to help each other was admirable. That is what it is all about. I don’t want us to lose that feeling we all had in the beginning together.” Whereas some women collect shoes or purses, Kimberly has a quiver of boards. “I have loved my quiver throughout the years, but I think I have it dialed in right now. I have five boards total, and I love each one for different reasons. I am so lucky to be a Surftech ambassador and a part of the BARK team. I enjoy and like the boards that Joe Bark makes and shapes for Surftech. We have a great, supportive, fun family of paddlers, and I love seeing everyone whenever we can meet up at events! The boards are fast and stable, and they can pierce through the headwind and chop. I have the ability to surf my boards even when I’m coming in the break from beach races. I feel very safe on their boards. I think having the combination of speed and stability is key. If you are always falling off your board, you not only lose time but you get very frustrated, and this makes for a bad time paddling or racing and no one likes that feeling.” “I currently have a Surftech 2013 /2014 Candice 12’6” model that I love because of the handle, which is up top on the side, making it easy to carry up and through the beachbreak. It’s easily
“What are you scared of? You can do this!”
maneuverable. This board handles great in the ocean; it has been with me through two Carolina Cup Graveyard Races and I loved it! I also have a custom 12’6” BARK that is 25.5 inches wide, and it is mostly carbon, and it helps me with my stability and it is very fast. I paddled this board most of the winter and never fell, even through some rough cold-water paddles, so I love it because it handles well too! My 14’ custom BARK is also mostly carbon, and I love paddling it because it is fast and fun and handles great on the flat water and ocean. I keep a 14’ so I can enter in a 14’ class whenever a race is offering it because I would love to see the women’s 14’ class grow! We can handle the board and get where we are going in less time, We asked Kimberly for her best advice for other women. so why not, right? I just got a Channel Islands 9’6” Surftech SUP surfboard so I can start practicing SUP surfing this summer. I am “Have confidence in yourself. Believe that you really can conquer really looking forward to that challenge!” tough water conditions and make it through anything that comes at “To mix things up and cross train I just got a Surftech BARK you while out on the water. If you are unsure about conditions and 12’ Commander Prone board, and I can’t wait to try proning! The water is now very warm, and I am excited to take it out and see how have no knowledge, seek help from someone who does.” I like it and hopefully enter a few races. I am very fortunate to be “If you have faith and believe that you can do it, you will. When you a part of the Kialoa family as well. They take great care of me and finish a challenging paddle, you will be so proud that you stuck it out. make sure I have all the paddles and shirts that keep the sun off of my shoulders and arms for the season. I love my Pipes paddle that After enduring a tough race, you know that you can do it again, with I have had since I started paddling; it is my go-to paddle because the knowledge of what you may do differently next time. Know your it is light, and the small blade has never caused me any injuries. I equipment and what it can do. The more you are out there, the more have tried all sizes and lengths and I have found that the Hulu small and the Pipes paddle blades work best for me. I like to distance comfortable you will be; it will become second nature. I can’t express paddle and these are the best. They are great for a windy paddle enough how important paddling is to my life—connecting to nature, day as well. If I am going for a short-distance paddle I will use a challenging myself to get out of my comfort zone and realizing I can larger blade just for a harder workout but come race day, I will also have my smaller blade. Maui Jim is also very supportive and their do anything I put my mind to. Paddling is just great stress relief from glasses are great off and on the water. With so much sun exposure work and life in general and makes me appreciate all that I have and out there, they are essential when paddling to keep my eyes safe, the beautiful area that surrounds me.” and I love their style too!

EVELYN I’m a year-round surfer, paddler and SUP racer. That’s not such a big deal unless you factor in that I live in the Northeast—Long Island, New York, to be exact. It gets cold up here in the winter months. When that ocean chills, our temperatures can dip below zero; we often have days that hover in the 20s. Add some wind chill to that and you’ll know what I mean. S A M ATA M A G . C O M

I feel like the challenge of winter paddling gives me more grit. It teaches me a lot about equipment, neoprene and water dynamics. I love it. It turns me on. And I love the water. It’s where I feel the most authentic, more “me” than the land “me,” so I have to stay connected with it. Weather and temperature become irrelevant. I live out on the eastern tip of Long Island, an area known as the Hamptons. If you’ve ever heard about it, you may have preconceptions. I just want to remind
four walls and inefficient at serving kids due to the bureaucracy of state tests and curriculum regulations, so I left a lucrative career and became a paddleboard instructor (true story!). I’m out on the water for up to eight hours a day in summer, and I love it. Being out on the water, meeting people every day and being able to share something I love, putting them in touch with nature, a part of themselves that perhaps they can’t see on land and, of course, efficient paddling techniques, makes me a very
you that regular working folk (like me!) live in the Hamptons year-round. It’s not always glitz and glam. In fact, the offseason (from winter to early spring) is one of the best parts of living here. It’s beautiful. We are surrounded by water, with the bays and estuaries on one side and the great Atlantic Ocean on the other. For a paddler like me, it’s a dream, a place of endless possibilities and explorations. Once upon a time, I was a public school teacher, but felt really stuck behind
happy person. In the winter, when it gets colder, I don’t have the motivation of companions to keep me on the water (where did everybody go?), so I have to find some intrinsic merit to my water time. Easy. Being out on the water, no matter what time of year, gives me a peace of mind and a feeling of absolute freedom and simplicity, that once I get over the “it’s too cold” factor, I’m a happy waterbug. I’m also a stand-up paddle racer, and know that I’m competing against people
who get to train year-round in more idyllic conditions. This gives me a spark to keep going. I have to stay on the water in order to stay in shape for the race season. There are other workouts (TRX, Yoga, Indo Boards), but nothing takes the place of actual water time to stay fit and strong for SUP racing. So, although the mind rejects the cold and the body doesn’t like neoprene, I do it. Again, the water is where I feel I’m my best self; it’s where I’m the most content and the connection with nature and
happy to be crazy like that. This past year in the Northeast, we experienced bitter cold in the winter months. Temperatures dipped below zero, often with a wind chill. Suddenly, hot yoga classes were looking pretty good. But rather than give in to the cold, I decided I would keep on paddling no matter what. Winter paddling is an extreme sport and there is a lot to learn before we can just put ourselves out there in the hazards of nature in frigid temperatures. Like any extreme sport, it can be dangerous if
faint of heart. There is the risk factor of putting oneself on the water in freezing temps: You have to prepare yourself well ahead of time and know what you’re doing. You need to understand the limits of your gear. And you have to take precautions. One of the agreements I have with my husband is that I leave him a “float plan,” in a text, telling him where I’m launching from and in what direction I’m headed. I also text him when I get back to shore. I am fully equipped with a PFD, cellphone in a dry bag and water. Of
everything around me is super-special. If I spend more than a few days away from the water, I am usually out-of-sorts. Once I get back to the ocean or out on the bay, it’s like a drug—an awesome adrenaline flow—and snap, I’m back in my body and feeling better than I ever do on land. People around here think I’m crazy to paddle year-round. But I just smile at them and nod and wonder how their desk job is treating them. And I head back out to paddle with a big grin on my face,
we’re not careful. So, I taught myself how to read nautical charts in order to find areas that were protected from the wind and where I could stay in the lee. I learned about wetsuit coverage versus pliability. I discovered ways to layer under and over a wetsuit for maximum warmth and protection. I had to get intimate with my equipment and understand the limitations of it. I knew I had to be careful and yet push through the mental resistance that said it was too cold to paddle. Winter paddling is also not for the
course, none of those are going to help if I fall in 30-degree water and I’m too far from shore. So I’m cautious. I don’t take any unnecessary risks when winter paddling and I try to hug the shoreline as much as I can (unless there’s an iceberg out there I need to explore!). The sights and hues I experienced out on the bays and ocean were incredible this winter. The entire bay froze over for more than three weeks. As soon as it began to shift and thaw, I loaded up my Starboard All-Star and headed out.
S A M ATA M A G . C O M
63
Paddling around 6-foot icebergs and through slush floes was a totally new experience and a radical one at that. Seeing snow on the cliffs from the water was equally mesmerizing. Having the whole, giant bay to myself was deeply satisfying. I believe with the right equipment and gear, anyone can paddle year-round. I was and am in training for the 2015 SUP racing season. So my cadence was strong and my heart rate was up. Inevitably, even after thinking at the beginning of almost every paddle, “Oh, I can’t do this, it’s too cold,” I would begin to hammer out a tune on the water and my body would
warm up, right down to my fingers and toes. With a strong, steady rhythm and increased heart rate, I’d be toasty upon my return. It’s incredibly powerful being out there and mindblowingly beautiful. This past winter taught me so much about the depth of solitude the water can offer. It is a place where I can be totally free of the entanglements, responsibilities and stressors we have on land. It became purely about me, just a girl on her board, out for a journey. There is an absolute peace out there and an empowerment. I learned to love those sessions, no matter what the temps, and ultimately, I became freed by them. May we all paddle on. Mahalo.

IN THE END, I DISCOVERED IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GEAR.”
EQUIPMENT In the end, I discovered it’s all about the gear. Adding layers beneath a wetsuit, wearing a fleece or windbreaker over my 4/3, as well as headgear (no hood, thank you!) and gloves, all became critical to staying warm and dry. • 4/3 Rip Curl Flash Bomb wetsuit (no hood) • 7mm Rubber Soul booties with wool socks underneath* • Smartwool vest next to my skin • Rashguard over wool vest • Heavy fleece to go over wetsuit for wind protection • Ski gloves** • Fleece headband/wool hat*** * Wetsuit booties are good but nothing beats adding a layer of wool for warmth. ** Neoprene gloves allow the wind to cut right though them, so ski gloves, although bulky and a little slippery, are the logical answer. *** Headgear is critical but wearing a wetsuit hood restricts movement so I go with a heavy fleece headband or wool hat on most outings.

t’s a crown jewel of Florida’s outdoor scene, and it’s home to world-famous mermaids and endangered manatees. The clear, turquoise waters of the spring-fed Weeki Wachee River flow under dappled sunlight through the dense forest of Florida’s west coast, north of Tampa. Along the way, spring vents open up to reveal deep, bubbling wells of 72-degree water.
To experience this river, launch near the headsprings at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park and paddle an easy six miles with the current. Take out at Rogers Park in Spring Hill, which has a small beach, parking area and dining options nearby. The trip takes about three hours, and there are plenty of places to pull over along the way to swim or eat a picnic lunch. Watch out for the large, gentle manatees that live here, and don’t be surprised if one decides to tag along under your board for a while. If you plan to paddle here in summer, you won’t be alone. More people paddle the Weeki Wachee in summer than at any other time of the year and the river is narrow, so be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends and holidays. If possible, plan a weekday trip, and if you intend to rent a board, reserve it ahead of time. For a little more solitude, go in winter, when the crowds dissipate. The water temperature remains about 72 degrees all year. While at the headsprings, check out the state park and its water park, Buccaneer Bay. And, if you’re so inclined, catch a live performance by Weeki Wachee’s famous mermaids, a Florida tradition since the 1940s.

BUSINESS PROFILE
N
NUU-MUU 101
A COMPANY RUN BY WOMEN, FOR WOMEN Everywhere Samata Magazine editor Lucy goes, heads turn and she hears the same comment: “What kind of dress is that and where can I get one?” Whether she’s at a SUP event or just getting out of the water, she exudes a sense of style, functional fit and comfort—that’s all just part of Nuu-Muu’s equation. The dress is also a great travel piece: It packs light and doesn’t wrinkle. Founders Christine Nienstedt and Ashley Fullenwider have imbued their brand with a sense and feel that inspires women and brings awareness as an Earth brand (eco-friendly). Christine came up with the idea when she was contemplating starting an exercise dress company. As she researched the history of dresses, she came across the Hawaiian muumuu and read about the comfort and the beautiful patterns of the traditional dress. She realized she was halfway there. Christine wanted her dresses to be comfortable and beautiful but with the added benefit of flattering women’s bodies. And so Nuu-Muu was born. It was a quick realization that there was more to do than Nienstedt could do alone, and it’s no fun alone. Her friend Ashley was the obvious choice of partner, given her innate delight in the business of having fun and her willingness to tackle anything. Christine found that Ashley was by far the more business-minded of the two of them and that their interests and abilities were great complements to one another. Today, Nuu-Muu has a beautiful showroom, a staff of incredible women and a passionate community of customers. Their products sell in stores across the globe. They are also launching into adventures, sharing the spirit of Nuu-Muu with women ready to explore. They have done everything from yoga and Nordic ski retreats to race expos, and they even have a six-week program of personal exploration and expansion, Nuu You in 42, which encourages a deeper understanding of the power of self-reflection and the unity of mind, body and spirit. For 42 days, participants commit to undertake daily meditation, a restorative diet, physical activity and weekly group meetings. They are supported by a community of like-minded people who want to feel better mentally, physically and spiritually. Nuu-Muu’s trajectory continues to surprise and delight all involved at every turn; it is with great passion and excitement they consider what might be around the corner.
Nuu-Muu’s philosophy revolves around the core belief that it is a company that fosters community and well-being. They care strongly about that development. Their website explains: Girl Power: We believe in strong girls and women. We believe in real people, real bodies and real friends. We believe in trying really hard. We believe that moments of truth can be extended to lifetimes of truth. We believe in having fun along the way. We believe that you can too. Green Living: We believe in riding bikes. We believe in recycled and recyclable packaging and tags. We believe less is more. We believe in hand-me-downs and in products made well enough to last. Made in the USA: We believe in limiting our carbon imprint. We believe in supporting our national economy. Every single Nuu-Muu is made in the United States in small batches so you can feel as good on the inside as your Nuu-Muu feels on you. Contributing: We believe in sharing. We believe in being engaged members of our communities. We believe in being the kind of company who cares enough to do the right thing.

Christine says that the Classic’s best feature is its flexibility to do whatever a girl wants to do and look great while doing it. The Ruu-Muu is the pocketed version of the Classic, maintaining the garment’s feminine lines and featuring two compartments that are 5 inches deep and 4 inches wide at the lower back, with a no-fuss fabric closure for safekeeping of your essentials.
